Co-ops are economic engines for state Arkansas’ electric cooperatives recently announced the results of a study examining the economic contributions that the state’s electric cooperatives have made within communities across the state from 2012 through 2016. The study quantified the economic impact that electric cooperatives have on Arkansas and more specifically, on

towns and communities where the cooperatives serve. This includes C & L Electric Co-op and 16 other distribution co-ops located across the state, which together serve more than a million members. They also own Arkansas Electric Cooperatives, Inc., (AECI), which is a statewide service organization, and Arkansas Electric Cooperative Corporation (AECC), which provides wholesale power to the 17 electric distribution co-ops. Results of the study showed that from 2012 to 2016, state’s electric cooperatives:

• Had a $23 billion impact on employment and infrastructure spending. • Contributed more than $8.8 billion to the gross state product. • Supported about 28,000 jobs through infrastructure investment. • Paid $1.9 billion in state and local taxes. • Directly employed approximately 2,000 Arkansans. • Contributed more than $5.3 million to philanthropies. • Returned $131 million in direct payments to members through capital patronage, dividends. • Maintained more than 75,000 miles of power lines. Madelyn Swinnney has been selected to travel to Washington, D.C. in June to attend the 2018 Youth Tour. The seven-day trip, sponsored by the Electric Cooperatives of Arkansas, will include tours of major sites in and around Washington, D.C., including the U.S. Capitol; the museums of the Smithsonian Institution; the Newseum; and the Jefferson, Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., Vietnam, Korean and World War II memorials. The winner was selected through an essay contest open to all high school juniors who live in C & L’s service area. This year’s winner, along with approximately 40 students from electric cooperatives across Arkansas, will travel to Washington D.C. Madelyn Swinney where they will join about 1,500 students from across the nation who are attending the tour. Through Youth Tour, these students will have an opportunity to learn more about their nation’s government and the electric cooperatives, as well as develop leadership skills. Madelyn Swinney, is the daughter of Bryan and Kelly Swinney. Madelyn is an Academic All Stars/Honor Roll at Woodlawn High School, where she is a cheerleader for the bears and serves as class treasurer. She is active in the Art Club, National Art Honor Society, FBLA, Spanish club, Beta Club, Junior Choir and Junior All-Region Choir, and is also on the school yearbook staff. Outside of school, Madelyn enjoys photography, volunteering at Bogg Springs Church Camp, leading music for VBS, and is very active in her church youth group where she enjoys serving on Mission trips. After graduation, she plans on attending college and majoring in marketing and photography. In her essay concerning “What Leadership Means to Me,” Madelyn stated, “One proves themselves a leader through hard work and a willingness to take action.”
