JUNE 2016

C & L ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE

Four high school students from C & L’s service area have been selected to travel to Washington, D. C. in June to attend the 2016 Youth Tour. The eight-day trip, sponsored by the Electric Cooperatives of Arkansas, includes tours of the major sites in and around Washington, such as the White House, U. S. Capitol, Library of Congress, Mount Vernon, the museums of the Smithsonian, Arlington National Cemetery and the FDR, Jefferson, Lincoln, Vietnam, Korean and World War II Memorials. The winners were selected through an essay contest open to all high school juniors who live in C & L’s service area. These four students, along with approximately 40 students from electric cooperatives across Arkansas will travel to Washington, D. C. where they will join about 1,500 students from across the nation who are attending the tour. Through the Youth Tour, these students will have the opportunity to learn more about their nation’s government and the electric cooperatives, as well as develop leadership skills. Jessica Lowery, daughter of Brian and Kristy Lowery, will attend twelfth grade at Rison High School this fall. Jessica plays on the Lady Wildcat basketball and track teams and is also a cheerleader. She is active in FBLA, Science Club, FCA, and Beta Club and was selected as an honor student. Outside of school, Jessica especially enjoys going on mission trips with her church, Rison Baptist. She has helped in vacation bible schools in Bono, Arkansas and in Kansas. She also assisted tornado victims in Mayflower, Arkansas. After graduating high school, she plans on attending college and becoming a nurse. In her essay concerning, “What Leadership Means to Me,” Jessica cites Jesus Christ as an example of great leadership, stating that “A leader is someone who demonstrates extraordinary dedication to his or her team and will do whatever it takes to better that team as a whole.” Cassidee McGee, who will be a Star City senior, is the daughter of Scott McGee and Lorri Sloate. Cassidee participates in several clubs and school activities including First Priority, EAST, Math Club (where she serves as treasurer), Senior Beta, Science, Library, FCCLA, teen court and HOSA. She received 1st place in Health Education two years in a row in the state HOSA competition. She was chosen to attend Girl’s State and is also a class officer. Outside of school, Cassidee enjoys duck, deer and turkey hunting. She attends First Assembly of God Church at Star City. Upon completing high school, she plans to attend college and pursue a career as a cardiologist. In Cassidee’s essay she shares her ideas of leadership this way, “The action of leading means more to me than just being in authority. I believe that leadership is defined by responsibility, courage, and intelligence.” Joanna Frizzell, who will also be a senior at Star City High, is the daughter of Steve and Donna Frizzell. Joanna is active in Senior Beta Club, HOSA, Math Club, FCCLA (in which she is District IV secretary), EAST Lab and Library Club (where she is treasurer). She is also on the soccer team. Joanna’s hobbies are dance, hammocking, cooking, and driving her Jeep. She attends Yorktown Free Will Baptist Church. After college, she wants to pursue a degree in the medical field, possibly optometry. In her essay, Joanna states, “I believe that authenticity is the key to success as anyone takes on leadership.” Caleb Walker, son of Mike and Jennifer Walker, will be in the twelfth grade at Star City High School. Caleb plays football and baseball for the Bulldogs and is a member of First Priority, Student Council, Senior Beta, Library, Math and Science Clubs. He also participated in the 2016 PLTW (Project Lead the Way) Summit Conference. Caleb enjoys hunting and fishing. His plans are to further his education and pursue a career in mechanical engineering. In his essay, Caleb states that “Like diamonds, a good leader is made under pressure.” C & L Electric is proud to have these outstanding students represent them on the Electric Cooperative Youth Tour to Washington, D. C. Congratulations Jessica, Cassidee, Joanna, and Caleb!

As we continue to grow into a society that relies more and more on technology, there are more risks to which we become exposed. This includes everything from potential scams to identity theft and cybersecurity attacks. We want you to be aware and cautious that these kinds of threats are real. At any given time, you may receive unsolicited communication from individuals falsely claiming to be representatives of the electric co-op. We regularly see reports from members of individuals calling members, threatening imminent disconnection of service unless payment is made immediately. In most cases, payment is requested in cash at a third-party location. These calls are scams. In addition, members may also receive communication from individuals who are soliciting a service, claiming to be representatives of the electric co-op. These calls should also be treated as scams. We will never call you with notice of service suspension or to request payment. We will also never “cold call a member to solicit a service; we will only call a member regarding a specific service if explicitly requested. If you ever receive communication from an individual
