October marks Co-op Month October is National Cooperative Month! NAEC – and all co-ops across the United States – are celebrating the benefits and values that cooperatives bring to our members and our communities. Co-ops operate in many industries. Seven cooperative principles set us apart from other businesses: voluntary and open membership; democratic member control; member’s economic participation; autonomy and independence; education, training and information; cooperation among cooperatives; and concern for community. NAEC is proud to be part of America’s cooperative network, which includes more than 47,000 cooperative businesses. Electric co-ops provide power for many Natural State residents, with 17 electric distribution co-ops serving more than 500,000 members. To learn more about NAEC, visit the “About Us” section of www.naeci.com.

Help after the hurricane

NAEC linemen traveled to Virginia on Sept. 12 to help Southside Electric Cooperative restore power to its members affected by Hurricane Florence. They included, from left: Clint Ray, Shane Goodson, Andy Ward, Gary Tanner, Dennis Reynolds, Ben Leslie, Paul Garrison and Chris Tomlinson. Offering assistance during major outages is known as mutual aid. It is one way electric cooperatives demonstrate the sixth cooperative principle, “Cooperation Among Cooperatives.”

ENERGY EFFICIENCY TIP OF THE MONTH Cooler temps are coming! Is your home’s heating system ready? Remember to replace furnace filters once a month or as recommended to increase efficiency and to keep your unit in good condition. — energystar.gov
