ur Vision

Northland Christian School is embarking on a journey to construct a facility, but we are building much more. Students like the Brown family, pictured on the school’s property, look forward to the day when they will stand in a new facility providing much-needed educational space in our mission of instructing students to learn, love and lead the world to Christ.

The Trailblazer is a publication of Northland Christian, a preschool - 12th grade school.

building our vision

Dear Northland

Christian

Community:

At Northland Christian, we are in the business of growth. We desire to see our students grow academically and spiritually, and we certainly observe their physical growth from year to year. However, there is another kind of growth occurring at NCS that is also receiving attention these days. Operating in leased facilities since 2006, NCS has experienced growth in enrollment and has reached a point where having its own facility is vital. The school currently has 307 students enrolled in preschool – 12th grade and continues to grow each year. Our current lease expires in July, 2017, so NCS plans to move into new facilities in July/August of 2017. A task force was established in 2012 to locate a parcel of land, and they found a 36 acre plot strategically located along Highway 169 between Tiffany Springs Parkway and Shoal Creek Parkway interchanges, for approximately $600,000. The land was purchased in late 2013, with half paid up front and the remaining financed through a school supporter. A new facility built on this land will allow for continued growth. The completion of Phase 1 will provide us space for 500 students. The school’s master plan for the entire facility will cost approximately $15 million. The school is planning to continue renting the facility at Jesus Church International through the end of the 2016-2017 school year, during the first phase of construction on the new site. Phase 1 includes construction of classrooms, meeting spaces, music rooms, commons areas and athletic facilities for the entire preschool -12th grade school. The cost of Phase 1 is approximately $8 million. It is anticipated that construction of the 70,000 square foot building will begin in the fall of 2015 and finish in the spring of 2017. In the meantime we have leased three modular units to house middle school; this will provide six additional classrooms for anticipated growth in middle school and high school in the next two years. I am excited to see how God uses this new facility to impact student lives. As the title suggests, the Building Our Vision campaign centers on the vision of partnering with Christian families and churches by offering a God-centered, discipleship based school with academic excellence and a Biblical worldview and equipping students to serve and influence our world for Christ. As we instruct students how to learn, love and lead the world for Christ, we positively impact not only our students but ultimately the nation and the world. This new facility is a vehicle to assist us in this vision, and I look forward to seeing God work through the NCS community. I sincerely hope that together we can share a vision of Christ’s kingdom in our community. May we, with God’s help, experience success and joy in striving for the vision.

about the campaign

The Northland Christian School Building Our Vision Campaign is about building more than a facility. The facility itself is a necessity to house our classes but the impact of the school extends beyond the property boundary. Building Community

Our desire is to make Christian education affordable and accessible for more families. Our vision is to build a Christian educational center in the Northland that is sustainable, even profitable, and growing God’s kingdom. We imagine the facility that we need to operate our school will be a source of revenue which will postively impact the community and allow more students the opportunity for Christian education. Possibilities for partnerships with like-minded organizations and income generation from the project include: • • • • •

Colleges/universities will have the opportunity to lease space, and NCS students will benefit from access to their programs. Performing arts programs will be expanded at NCS and used as an outreach to youth in the community. The venue will be available for concerts, theater productions and other special events. Athletic facilities will be an integral part of the design for the school with expanded courts and fields ideal for tournaments, leagues and other sports activities. Distance learning technology in the building will allow NCS to stream classes to other communities in regions where Christian secondary education is not available and to homeschool families. Event space will be available with a commercial kitchen, which could be leased by churches and also for special events like weddings, conferences, trade shows, and corporate seminars.

Every part of the new facility will be leveraged for maximum use. The design of the facility creates multiple streams of income that will make it possible for the school to maintain reasonable tuition rates and lessen the school's dependence upon donation income.

Building for the Future

The plan for the new building to serve as both school facility and income generator for the school appeals to donors like Liz and Gary Simons. The Simons have operated Sonic Drive-Ins in the Kansas City area for more than 30 years. “I believe this is a great plan since private schools have to generate their own revenue,” Liz says. “Unlike public schools who are supported by Federal, State and local tax dollars, Christian schools must find their own avenues for funding. Creating a multi-purpose facility that can be used by the community seems like a perfect solution especially now while the Northland is in a growth period, and the property designated for the new school is centrally located to a lot of those growing communities.”

Building Leaders

NCS is building leaders who will serve in our local communities and beyond. Harris Kruse is one such future leader. He is a member of the NCS junior class and one of the school’s first participants in Northland Center for Advanced Professional Studies (CAPS) which inspires students to succeed in the critical areas of Bioscience, Business, Engineering and Human Services. “I’m incredibly excited about the new facility,” Harris says. “The new technology will be amazing and will really allow students to have the world at their fingertips.” Harris adds that the new athletic facilities will allow student athletes to expand their in-house training opportunities.

Building Disciples

Parents send their children to Northland to give them opportunities to succeed but also to be built up in their faith. Ryan and Annette Vaughn enrolled their preschooler, Myles, and are excited about the future for their son and for the school. “Perhaps one of the most important decisions any parent can make is one that is centered on the education of their children,” Ryan says. “When my wife and I began our journey as parents through adoption, one of the topics that surfaced repeatedly was this whole idea of public vs. private education and where we would send our son, Myles. It was through fervent prayer and testimonials of close friends that we felt the direction to enroll Myles in Northland Christian, a decision in which we are overjoyed to have made.”

“As his father, my ultimate prayer for Myles is that one day he would surrender his life to Christ and become a dedicated, faithful disciple of Jesus. I understand that it is the responsibility of my wife and me to consistently share the gospel with our son, but what an absolute joy it has been to partner with a school that not only champions excellence in education, but also makes it a priority to shape, mold and equip its students into becoming bold disciples."

Michael Randle and his wife, Lynda, were among the parents who stepped out in faith to be part of the high school when it began in 2006. “As parents, it has been a blessing to us to know that Northland Christian is committed to academic excellence and Christian character. I truly believe that our children, Patience and Joy, have been well prepared to excel at any secondary institution in the country and beyond.”

Building the Church

Michael Randle also serves as the pastor of Mosaic Bible Fellowship. He and other pastors like Brady Testorff, pastor of The Calling Community Church, want to see statistics reversed on young adults leaving the church, and they believe the church, home, and school partnership is one key strategy to accomplish that goal. "Safe community is crucial for young adults,” says Brady, who has two daughters in high school at NCS. “They need an environment where they can be connected, be real, be heard and be valued. If we create space where they feel like they are a part of something greater than themselves, it will give them more of a reason to stay in the Church."

5

about the campaign

"This whole idea of "partnership" or "kingdom education" is a very unique approach, one that certainly grabbed our attention from the very beginning. When we encourage parents, the church and the school to band together to invest in a student's mental, physical and spiritual well-being, we inevitably provide a strong foundation for not only current Northland Christian students, but for future generations as well. It will be that very foundation, well beyond graduation day, that our students will stand on as they lead other generations to make disciples of Jesus Christ in their community and beyond.”

The New Project

The school is planning to continue to rent its facilities from Jesus Church International through the end of the 2016-2017 school year, during the first phase of construction on the new site. Phase I includes construction of classrooms, meeting spaces, music rooms, commons areas and some athletic facilities for the entire Preschool-12th grade school. Construction of additional phases will take place when increased enrollment and funding make it possible.

master chool’s will S n ia t is facility nd Chr Northla the entire new million. r tely $15 plan fo roxima p p a t s co

It is anticipated that Phase I will cost approximately $8 million. The building, comprising about 70,000 square feet, will cost approximately $7 million. The land, land improvements and other campaign costs will total about $1 million. Building construction is anticipated to begin in the fall of 2015 and be completed in the spring of 2017, in order for the school to be open for the 2017 fall school term. Financing of the portion of the project not covered by the fundraising campaign – about $5.5 million - is anticipated through local bank financing at approximately 5% interest, amortized over 20 years. Payments will be made from future capital campaign revenue as well as tuition income.

Campaign Goals

project details

The fundraising campaign goal is $4 million with $2.5 million to be used for a down payment on the building, $300,000 for the remaining portion of the 36-acre land purchase, and another $200,000 for capital campaign expenses. The remaining $1 million will be used to fund tuition discounts at the school for the next five years.

Building a Legacy “What is the use of living, if it be not to strive for noble causes and to make this muddled world a better place for those who will live in it after we are gone?” –Winston Churchill Churchill lived in a dark time in history, yet he held out hope for the future. At NCS, we believe our mission will impact both this and future generations, and we invite you to join us in this great cause.
