Slip, Trip & Fall Prevention

Slip, Trip, and Fall Prevention

by:Allison Gage

Falls are the #1 leading cause of death for people over 65 years of age and the large majority of these falls happen at home. One out of every five falls result in serious injury and 25% of all accidental deaths are caused by falls at home. Fortunately, many of these slips, trips, and falls can be prevented.

Seeing your doctor on a regular basis can help reduce your risk of a fall. During your appointment, ask if any medications that you are taking could raise your fall risk. Discuss potential side-effects of medications that might make you dizzy, sleepy, or lethargic. Also, request that your doctor give you information about exercises to help strengthen your legs and improve, or maintain, your balance. You may also want to visit a local balance center to see how they can help. If your doctor has suggested the use of a cane or walker, please use it. It is a wise decision that can help you avoid a trip to the hospital.

Everyone should have their vision checked by an optometrist or ophthalmologist at least once each year. Changes in vision can cause you to stumble or fall and can also be a sign of a serious health condition.

Steps you can take to minimize your likelihood of falling at home can be found on this Home Safety Checklist. Be sure to check these areas of your home carefully for the following:

  • Outdoor walkways are clear of hazards and are well lit at night

  • All steps and stairs inside and outside have stable handrails

  • Indoor walkways and stairs are free of clutter and trip hazards

  • Indoor walkways and stairs are well lit

  • All rugs and carpet runners are in good condition with no wrinkles or upturned corners or edges

  • All rugs and runners stay put and do not slip nor slide

  • Doors are easy to open and close

  • Frequently used items are easily accessible

  • Proper support for getting in and out of bed is available, if needed

  • Sturdy grab bars are in place near the toilet and in the shower

  • Bathtub is slip-free

Being mindful of slip, trip, and fall hazards, as well as implementing the above tips will make you and your loved ones more aware of the dangers in and around your home.
