Although we should make an effort to honour our parents every day of the year, on Father’s Day it’s nice to do something even a little more special than usual. Flowers and chocolates and spa certificates may not be the most appropriate or appreciated gifts, however, so here a few other suggestions to put a smile on the face of that important father figure in your life.

GOLF What better way to enjoy some

quality time with Dad while getting some sunshine and exercise, too. There are numerous golf courses in and around the Milton area and plenty of driving ranges, should you need a little practice run first. Also check out golf lessons if you or Dad have never played, or are definitely rusty.

HIKING/WALKING

Whether it’s one of the various local Halton Parks such as Kelso, Rattlesnake or Hilton Falls, or simply a stroll along a park or garden path, getting outside and stretching your legs is

Get OUT OUT Get and and

ABOUT ABOUT

with Dad Dad on on with

FATHER’S DAY a perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Bring along the entire family and pick a destination, such as a pond or park, or even a restaurant where you can treat Dad to a nice meal.

BOATING

June is a perfect time to get out on the open water with Dad or Grandad, whether it’s sailing, powerboating or even canoeing. If you don’t have one of your own, check out rentals and lessons. Just remember to always be safe and wear a lifejacket, especially if children are involved!

BICYCLING

It doesn’t have to be a race and you don’t even have to own an expensive bicycle in order to have a wonderful, relaxing time in your very own town. Or, if you happen to own a bike carrier, toss them on the back of your vehicle and head out to Niagara Region where there are miles and miles of gorgeous trails to explore. Just remember your helmets! 13

Suits are making a comeback. Even in the hallowed halls of the Silicon and Ottawa Valleys, where tech executives would come in to the office wearing jeans, suits have once again reared their pinstriped and luxurious heads. Not just suits--but bespoke suits, are gaining traction thanks to movie characters like Daniel Craig’s James Bond in Casino Royale. Bespoke is to men’s clothing what haute couture is to women’s clothing. Clothing that is tailor made to a customer’s specifications is all the rage, and there is nothing quite so attractive as a garment that is made to fit an individual’s body and personality. Corporate employees are opting for bespoke as opposed to wearing off the rack because of the irresistible confidence boost, but also because of the undeniable quality of a custom-made suit. Not sure where to start? Inside Milton Magazine is doing some homework for you. We’ve taken two local businessmen, Seth Ferguson and Giles vanderHolt, and we’re going to make over their suit closets with the help of Sam Surin New Royal Fashion out of Bangkok. Currently, some of the world’s best tailors are in Bangkok. Sam Surin’s factory has operated as a custom tailoring factory producing made to order garments for buyers all over the world for the last 21 years. Using top-quality European milled fabrics, and using traditional tailoring techniques from Italy and England, and the latest equipment from Germany and Japan, Sam Surin’s skilled tailors produce tens of thousands of custom made suits for just about any body, from the general public to higher profile clients like Barack Obama and Jay Leno. Many high end men’s shops around the world even send their tailoring work to factories like Sam Surin. So how can you get a bespoke suit of your very own? Some of the Bangkok tailors, including Sam Surin, do an annual world tour. Sam was on his way to Canada and we managed to convince him to come to Milton to work with our fellas. Our first images in this month’s issue feature Seth Ferguson and Giles vanderHolt in their old, off-thepeg suits. We plan to make them over and will reshoot them in their custom-made Sam Surin suits in a follow-up issue and you can judge for yourself. In the meantime, you don’t need to wait to order your tailor made suit. You can go straight to the Sam Surin website to begin the process of ordering your new digs. The website includes and informative FAQ section, including an important section highlighting their commitment to adhering to 15

international human rights and conservation norms. The company strictly follows wage regulations in Thailand and employs only skilled employees over the age of 21 at their facility. Be sure to keep an eye out for our follow-up issue complete with our gentlemen makeovers. For more information about bespoke suits from Sam Surin, visit www.samsurin.com. Happy shopping boys!

Supermom is a term everyone is familiar with: Women who try to do it all and have it all, the family, the children and the jobs, all while balancing everything successfully. While the true supermom is one who simply does her best to keep all aspects of her life in check, these following local women share some interesting and informative tips about how they manage to balance their families, their jobs and their sanity, proving d “ oing it all” doesn’t necessarily mean doing it all perfectly. 18

MARIA LOCKER Maria Locker is the founder of The Ontario Mompreneurs Group, organizer of The Milton Mompreneurs Group and The Milton Mompreneur Showcase. The stay-at-home mom of two children started out as a Kindergarten teacher, but after finding she enjoyed working with different media and advertising outlets, decided to try her hand at being a Pampered Chef Consultant, which she loved. She began chatting with fellow Milton moms who were in the same position as she was, working to maintain their families while bringing in extra income on their own terms. When she realized there was a lack of networking resources, she organized a trade show and the rest is “herstory.”

HOW DID YOU START YOUR OWN BUSINESS? Starting “Milton Mompreneurs” came from being an independent sales consultant for a direct marketing company, and looking for a realistic and professional way to tell people what I was doing. When I realized there really wasn’t something in place for me, neither group or event, with the quality that I expected as a professional entrepreneur, I figured there wasn’t much to lose by starting something myself! Truly, I saw a need and figured out a way to fill it!

HOW DO YOU BALANCE FAMILY LIFE WITH YOUR BUSINESS LIFE? I’ve come to the realization that there will never really be a true “balance”. There are times when I need to focus more fully on business, especially leading up to an event, and my family time may suffer. With that comes the acceptance that I can’t ALWAYS focus on business, so I try to make up for the busy work sessions by fitting in fun family time. This usually equates to long mornings with pancakes and PJ’s until noon and colouring with the kids, or leaving my phone at home

when out for the weekend. It is crucial to separate business and family at some point every day in order for my family to know that they are just as important to me as my business is.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE ABOUT BEING BOTH A MOM AND A BUSINESS OWNER? For me, the biggest challenge is dealing with “mommy guilt”. I’m starting to build a thicker skin to it, but it’s really hard to tell your kids you can’t play because you’re trying to work on something! My kids are both still very young, and because I work from home, there is a different sense of “work” in comparison to how they see my husband working. Daddy leaves and works all day, but they don’t see that... with me, it seems I’m working ALL THE TIME because they see every email and every phone call that comes in! It can be challenging to explain, but each day that goes by things seem to be making more sense to them.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR MOMS WHO WANT TO START THEIR OWN BUSINESS? Don’t be intimidated. If you’ve got a great idea, and the passion and drive to go along with, the sky’s the limit! I really believe that! People tend to knock their own instincts before they give themselves the chance to let their ideas flourish. I am a true believer that if you LOVE what you do, you will do it well... and as an entrepreneur you are choosing what to do, so it really is a win-win situation!

FRANCA PEDULLA Born and raised in Milton, Franca Pedulla of Ooh La La Boutique is a business owner and mother of two. A graduate of the Edith Serei School of Aesthetics, Franca continues to perfect her skills through extensive training in medical aesthetics and makeup artistry. Her accolades include placing first for Wella Canada, participating in the International Trend Vision show in Paris and fashion runway as an extension of her creative portfolio. Her skills have been featured on the cover of Oxygen Magazine, Eat Clean Diet series and network television. Franca’s low key and flexible approach to the beauty industry has gained her a loyal following. Her passion shines through with every new palate that she creates.

HOW DID YOU START YOUR OWN BUSINESS? I had a lot of support from family, friends, and clients who gave me the strength to venture out on my own. It was something that I always wanted to do so when the opportunity opened up I took it!

HOW DO YOU BALANCE FAMILY LIFE WITH YOUR BUSINESS LIFE? I have a lot of help from my dedicated staff. That allows me to be “mom” when I need to be. My staff always jump in and look after things when I can’t be there. I put in a lot of hours and with great support from my parents I am able to keep a healthy family and business balance.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE ABOUT BEING BOTH A MOM AND A BUSINESS OWNER? The biggest challenge about being a mom and business owner is keeping up with all the little things that need to

20

get done. For instance, household chores, paper work etc. Sometimes it’s hard to find the time to take care of yourself.

WHAT IS THE BEST PART ABOUT BEING YOUR OWN BOSS? The best part about being my own boss is having the gratitude and pleasure of walking into my own boutique and seeing what I’ve built. I am very proud to have built a home away from home. I don’t feel like a boss, my business is part of my life and when I can make my clientele happy it make me happy. There is nothing better than knowing you put a smile on someone’s face and made them feel good.

HOW DID YOU START YOUR OWN BUSINESS? I have always had a passion for food, especially baking. I decided to start a home-based business focusing on one of my favourite desserts – cupcakes, and after two years decided that it was time to branch out further and open a store front. My dream was a cafe style cupcakery where you could sit down, enjoy a coffee & a delicious cupcake.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE FAMILY LIFE WITH YOUR BUSINESS LIFE? This is the biggest challenge for me, trying to balance life as a mom of young children, a wife and an entrepreneur. Although my time is limited with my family, I tell myself every day that it is not the quanitity of time but the quality of time. When I am home with my family, there is no focus on business and my time is entirely dedicated to them.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE ABOUT BEING BOTH A MOM AND A BUSINESS OWNER? The biggest challenge was opening the store front when my youngest was only 5 months old. I would have to say that dedicating so much time as an entrepreneur requires in the first year of any business most definitely has taken away time from my family but I know that it will most definitely be worth it. Balancing family and a new business is most definitely the biggest struggle.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR MOMS WHO WANT TO START THEIR OWN BUSINESS? Find something that you are passionate about and run with it. If you love doing it, it won’t feel like work and you will in turn be successful.

CHRISTA STRONG Christa Strong of Couture Cupcake is a longtime lover of all things baked. Mixing ingredients and creating new recipes has been her passion since she was nine, and what better way to nurture her sweet tooth than to open her own bakery. This busy mom offers a daily spread of cupcakes in mini and large, cakes, cookies, pushcakes, cake pops, pupcakes and also the Jumbo Cupcake which comes in any of the cupcake flavours. They also offer a wide selection of organic teas, coffee and espresso, plus birthday party packages and workshops for all ages. 22

TARA FORD Tara Ford purchased Southside Paint & Wallpaper in October 2006 with her husband and hasn’t looked back since. Customer service and community support is a top priority for this business, which offers inhome colour consultations, in store colour consults, delivery to both home and business, and an array of professional advice. Mom of two Tara is a decorator and has a home décor section in her Toronto store branded as Tulula Home Décor, and she is excited to bring that to Milton. With the goal of helping clients find their own style, while not imposing her style on them, Tara asks as many questions as possible, finding out everything from favourite colours to favourite items of clothing, in order to better understand what will work best for her clients.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE FAMILY LIFE WITH YOUR BUSINESS LIFE?

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR MOMS WHO WANT TO START THEIR OWN BUSINESS?

It can be complicated. My husband and I support one another tremendously with the never ending drop-offs and pick-ups of our children depending on whose day is busier. I have found over the last six years having a great supportive staff is crucial. Some years are easier than others as staff come and go, but I work my hardest to make time for things like hockey practice and field trips. My mom was always there for me and I want the same for my kids. I try to leave weekends available as much as possible to spend time with my family but still accommodate my clients who can’t schedule appointments Monday through Friday. Having a staff than I can rely on when I’m not there allows me to relax and enjoy my family time.

There is a misconception that owning your own business allows you more time to spend with your family. You must go in knowing you will work harder than you ever have in your life. Especially when an employee is sick or decides to find employment elsewhere, in the end YOU are responsible for this baby. It is important to enjoy what you do and even more important to be able to run the show on your own if and when necessary. Hard work and multitasking mania aside, it is also the most rewarding type of work because it is your baby. You’ve been by its side since the beginning, and there is a huge amount of pride in that.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE ABOUT BEING BOTH A MOM AND A BUSINESS OWNER? I have two boys, my businesses are like my third and fourth children and the staff are like my extended family. There is a whole lot of “mom guilt.” Trying to be fabulous in every aspect is challenging to say the least, so I choose to do my best and rely on my fantastic staff, my beautiful family and my extraordinary friends.

1. First Impression is a lasting one! The ‘Personality’ of your home needs to be neutralized; realize that potential buyers need to visualize themselves and their belongings in the home. 2. Declutter: Particularly in cupboards and closets. Crammed storage spaces need to be edited; if not, buyers are left with the impression that there is not enough storage available.

3. Furnishings need to be edited and simplified. Professionals are trained to plan space; we see things differently. We also pay close attention to scale. Reduce the number of pieces. 4. Clean: Maintain a level of cleanliness. Clean everything from the top down, interior and exterior. 5. Pets are a consideration that need to be addressed. Some potential buyers have a real aversion to animals of any kind. Evidence needs to be minimal. Neutralize any odours and keep pets out of sight. 6. Reveal, never conceal, any damage to any surface. Better yet, address the issue prior to listing. Regular maintenance will help avoid some problems, but you are better off to fix any deficiency. Invest in your investment. 7. Protect yourself. Remove valuables. Kitchen knife blocks are better off packed away! Safety first. 8. Minimize storage and keep it tidy and organized in the basement or garage. 9. Make smart upgrades that are current and expected in today’s real estate market. Light fixtures, taps/faucets, door and cabinet hardware, and drapery and window treatments are the most cost effective and simple upgrades.

10. Do not rush to put the house on the market until it is ready. Know your competition and be prepared to present your home in its best possible light. Care and attention to detail will impress buyers, especially if it is move-in ready!

BACKSPIN MARKETING GROUP Helping Businesses Make a Presence These days when looking for a specific product to suit your needs, do you browse the phone book or browse the Web? We thought so. The Internet has become the preferred method of shopping, so why be left out? If your company doesn’t have a comprehensive, accurate and easily accessible website to showcase its products and services, you could be putting your business…out of business. What are some of the benefits of a strong Web presence? For starters, you’re basically “open for business” 24 hours a day, allowing potential customers from around the world to browse at their leisure, on their own time. With a well-designed and maintained site, your company presents a professional and credible image before customers even set foot inside your store. Don’t forget about the ability to earn revenue for sales, leads, and traffic driven from merchant links and ads on your site, plus post job opportunities with your company on your website, as a recruiting tool. A website allows you to sell products and services online, a more affordable alternative than in-store sales. Whether you’re proving advertising effectiveness, improving customer service, educating your customers or simply

enhancing your online presence, all without adding additional employees, there’s simply no reason to not have a website of your own. At Backspin Marketing Group we provide expertise in not only building websites, but maintaining social media and handling email marketing. As a one-stop source for all your advertising and promotions needs, we can maximize the results of your marketing. We focus on building longterm relationships with our clients and will take the time to understand your business and create campaigns that meet your objectives. Whether your project is large or small, we can work within your time frame and budget to find innovative ways to engage your audience. With years of experience behind us, we pride ourselves on offering big agency ideas with the personal commitment of a small agency. We design without boundaries; finding unique and innovative ways to deliver your message to maximize opportunities, enhance brand awareness and boost sales for our customers. The Efficient Frontier Modern Portfolio Theory When it comes to investing, it’s easy to get drawn into complex debates on current market conditions – what to buy, what to avoid, what to sell, and when. These discussions are often fuelled by reports from the media, which tend to overdramatize how short-term events affect investors. Not surprisingly, these reports devote little space to how and why we invest in the first place. That would be much less exciting. Plus, the story line wouldn’t change.

Why do people invest? Most people save their hard-earned money because they have a dream for the longer term – whether retirement, a child’s post-secondary education, a cottage or world travel. The plan and prudent management of your portfolio should focus on this dream, not on short-lived market fears or frenzy.

So how should you invest? The best way to move steadily toward your dreams is to adopt a consistent strategy that you stick with through market cycles, ignoring market and media “noise.” Modern Portfolio Theory using The Efficient Frontier is one such investment strategy. This approach is based on an investing theory of riskefficient portfolios associated with Nobel laureates Harry Markowitz and Bill Sharpe. They demonstrated that portfolio returns could be maximized for a given risk level through optimal diversification – by carefully choosing the proportions of various investments such as asset class, geographic allocation and style of investment management.

What is the Efficient Frontier? The Efficient Frontier is a curve on a graph made up of a series of dots, each representing an “efficient portfolio.”

Each portfolio maximizes potential returns at each risk level. The more risk you can handle – based on your comfort with volatility, time horizon and other factors – the higher the potential returns you can expect. You can see from the graph that it is possible to increase potential returns of an inefficient portfolio, represented somewhere below the curve, by moving it up to the curve at the same or even lower risk level (i.e., without moving right on the risk axis).

How does it work? Using the Efficient Frontier is an elaborate exercise that considers three factors for each investment in the portfolio: 1. Its estimated rate of return, based on historical data and analysis. 2. The level of risk (or volatility) associated with the investment. Risk measures the likelihood that the investment will earn much higher or lower returns than expected. 3. An asset’s correlation to the other assets in the portfolio. You want to choose investments that are “negatively correlated,” or that react differently in different market conditions to smooth out annual returns. As a simple example, if your money was invested only in Canadian resource equities, you could expect a rough ride from year to year, but potentially high returns on average over the longer term. If it were invested in a guaranteed investment, you would earn a stable but low return. But

www.insidemilton.ca

37

if you combined these two investments into a portfolio, you could achieve better returns than the guaranteed investment, but with less volatility than the equities. Add in more and different types of investments, and the expected performance of your portfolio could improve even further. At some point, however, increased diversification stops increasing expected returns. The “efficient portfolio” is thus reached. The key is identifying that ideal mix.

How we can help?

Then what?

Josephine Mallari, Financial Advisor at 420 Main St. East, Suite 204, Milton, ON L9T 1P9 Tel. 905-876-0120 Fax: 905-876-2934 Email: josephine@plansNgoals.com www.plansNgoals.com

Keeping your portfolio on or near the Efficient Frontier is a sound strategy to adopt – and adhere to – regardless of what the markets are doing. Unfortunately, creating efficient portfolios is a sophisticated undertaking that is beyond the skills and interest of most investors. That’s where our team can help. For more information, please contact:

Once an efficient portfolio has been identified for your risk level, there is still work to do. Some investments grow faster than others, causing the portfolio to “drift” away from and below the Efficient Frontier. As a result, your exposure to risk could increase or your expected returns could decrease, with negative consequences to your investment goal. The answer here is rebalancing. By selling investments that have outperformed and are now over their ideal target weighting and reinvesting the proceeds in asset classes that are undervalued, you can keep your portfolio efficient. What’s more, this strategy helps you “sell high” and “buy low.” Statistics show that 96 percent of the population never rebalance their investments, missing out on this opportunity to enhance potential profits.

Bringing Habitat for Humanity to Milton is a Labour of Love and Compassion

Y

You may imagine Habitat for Humanity projects as volunteers building homes in remote and rugged developing countries across the globe, or perhaps you’re already aware of the work that Habitat for Humanity is doing locally. When it comes to causes focused on providing economic assistance, we tend to overlook the need that exists within our own community, our very own neighbourhoods. Habitat for Humanity Halton is reminding us that within the Halton Region, the ability to make ends meet and to keep a roof overhead is often a difficult, nearly impossible goal. Habitat for Humanity Halton is now building its first home in Milton, after taking on several successful projects in Oakville and Burlington, including an innovative condominium project in 2011.

works for corporate sponsors. He explained that corporate sponsors might donate funds at a level of sponsorship that includes a full day working on the house. Then Dave manages the site and the construction of the home by providing instructions and supervision for volunteers. He remains heavily involved, coaching volunteers along the way to ensure the quality of the workmanship. Habitat for Humanity homes are built by members of the community, with donated materials. In addition to the donation of time and materials, Habitat sources eco friendly and local materials and services, and has developed a program called Homeworks for partner families to ensure that the assistance they’re receiving doesn’t stop once they put the key in the door to their new home.

This is the first Milton Habitat for Humanity house. Located on Farmstead Road, the family home under construction is a community-driven labour of love. Mattamy Homes donated the lot, the frame and the associated labour. The day I visited the property was Remax Milton’s building day in the home. I asked Dave Bedini, the Habitat Halton construction manager, how it

Habitat partner families are given home ownership and financial literacy counseling designed to help them maintain their homes and manage their finances in the years to come. The program is included in the Habitat project. Dave Bedini explains that Habitat homes are sold to partner families on an interest free mortgage. The partner family is the homeowner, and in lieu of down

43

payments, they agree to provide 500 hours of sweat equity into the project. Families must apply for a Habitat home through a structured process based on income level. Conditions the family must meet include a financial situation in which the family is expending 50 percent or more of its income towards shelter. Halton is often considered a region of affluent communities with high standards of living; however, in 2011 Halton had almost 30,000 people living below the Statistics Canada Low Income Cut Off. In other words, 8.5 percent of Halton’s population, including one out of every ten children is living below the poverty line. Milton’s first Habitat house will soon be occupied by its new family, and Dave says the three most important criteria for Habitat projects are safety, quality, and fun. “A world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live.” This is the mission statement on the Habitat website and witnessing these values in action is truly an inspirational experience. A CLASSIC

AWARD WINNING MILTON FAVOURITE

While we all know the menu, and we’re all familiar with the chicken, fries and classic sauce, Milton’s Swiss Chalet has managed to serve up something a little extra-special recently: a Canada-wide, customer based service award.

And also, “The hostess shined, the server was wonderful, and the whole atmosphere was contagious with happiness, very rare in other locations. All the customers were happy, like they were shooting a commercial, but this was real!”

Customers are invited to fill out online comment surveys after they’ve dined at the restaurant, which are then gathered and compiled country-wide. This year Milton’s own Swiss Chalet won first place, complete with a trophy now on prominent display in the entrance. With more than 200 Swiss Chalet restaurants across Canada, Milton should be very proud of this outstanding achievement.

With feedback like that, it’s easy to see why the Milton location came out on top. Of course, the delicious food doesn’t hurt, either.

“Our staff is amazing,” says owner John Pilarski. “When I took over two years ago, I wanted to be number one and now we are. And we definitely plan to repeat next year.” Some of the glowing customer reviews included: “This location, even though there are closer ones, is the most enjoyable around. Worth the 20 km drive.” And, “I recently moved to Milton and this is by far the best experience I have had at a restaurant since I moved here.” 46

“People are unaware that many restaurants use frozen food for preparation,” says Pilarski, who has worked previously with the company as District Manager and Director of Operations. “Swiss Chalet uses only fresh food prepared daily. Our french fries start out as potatoes in the morning, and the chicken comes out of the oven every 15 minutes. You can’t get much fresher than that.” And their loyal customers know it, with about 95 percent of the diners considered “regulars.” The business also prides itself on giving back to the

Finally, one of the best customer comments shows how loyal the diners truly are: “We will travel the 45 minutes to come to this location. Day

trips Three Fascinating Local Destinations

It’s the perfect time of year to make a day trip. Hop in the car and within a few hours you’re ready to explore a completely new and different landscape. How lucky are we to live so close to so many wonderfully unique destinations, all in our own backyard?

Stratford If you think of Stratford, Ont., as simply Justin Bieber’s hometown, think again. As picturesque as it is interesting, Stratford is widely regarded as one of North America’s premiere arts towns. Whether you’re looking for live theatre, dance, visual arts, music, antiques, fine dining, bed and breakfasts or parks and gardens, Stratford has it all. One of the first things people notice about Stratford is the beauty, with 19th century streets framing a river set with swans and renowned gardens. Stratford is meant to be strolled and savoured. Watch a thrilling performance, eat in a bustling restaurant, or have a picnic by the river. Discover a one-of-a-kind art piece to bring home, share coffee at a café, and hobnob with local actors, musicians and designers – many of whom call Stratford home — in the after-theatre glow of a bar or bistro. Stratford may be smaller than many destinations, but it possesses a worldly character evident by the refined and well-tended private and public architecture which has long centred the town. Famed for Bed and Breakfast inns, each loaded with atmosphere and welcoming hosts – from elegant Victorian Mansions to cozy cottages – it’s a place you’ll return to for years to come. What’s On: The world-famous Stratford Festival June plays include Pirates of Penzance and Cymbeline. Other events include Culinary Walking Tours, a Blues and Ribfest, the Festival of Song and a Father’s Day Draft Horse Showcase.

St. Jacob

Ontario’s “Favourite Rural Destination” is located in Waterloo Region, west of Toronto and is renowned for Canada’s largest year-round Farmers Market and the Village of St Jacobs. Home to a population of approx. 4,000 Old Order Mennonites who farm the surrounding countryside, this destination has been welcoming visitors for decades. St. Jacobs Country has become renowned among shoppers as a place that blends the pleasures of a pastoral setting with a remarkable shopping experience. Browse the shops and visit with the artisans in the Village of St. Jacobs. Discover Canada’s largest farmers’ market and flea market as well as top brand outlets. Cycle or walk along country routes and trails. See worldclass professional theatre, or wander among historic and cultural exhibits or take a self-guided historic Village walking tour. And no visit is complete without a visit to the famous St. Jacob’s Farmers Market, located just outside town.

Kensington

Toronto’s Kensington offers local visitors everything they could ask for, including cool vintage shops, independent designers, business wear as well as inexpensive basics. The Market is many things to many people; a unique shopping experience, a community worth living in, and an artistic haven.

Market

Kensington-Market.ca is a group of people who live, work, play and/or own businesses in the Market, seeking to promote the Market, its events, spaces, and businesses for the greater enjoyment of its residents, business owners, and the people who enjoy visiting. A distinctive multicultural neighbourhood in Downtown Toronto, the market is an older neighbourhood and one of the city’s most well-known. The (partly) outdoor market has probably been photographed more often than any other site in Toronto.

CELEBRATING

OLIVE YOU WITH CROONER & CONNOISSEUR

Michéal Castaldo “Life is not a cup to be drained, but a measure to be filled.” This is Michéal Castaldo’s approach to his music, his work, his passions, and his life in general. The Calabrianborn, Canadian-raised, and now New York City resident is a celebrated international Classical-Crossover artist. He is also an olive oil aficionado and expert, and a dedicated unofficial ambassador—as he puts it—for the region of Calabria, Italy where he was born. Michéal Castaldo loves sharing the very best Italian music, the freshest olive oil from his family’s groves, and a stay at his family’s enchanting villa, Villetta Mimma Vittoria, named for Michéal’s mother. To spend time with Michéal is to drink in all the things that go with “La Dolce Vita,” the sweetest life imaginable. La Dolce Vita

should definitely include a copy of Michéal’s recently released album, aptly titled Olive You, which features classic Italian songs to feed the heart and soul. How did Michéal develop his expertise in music? Like all good stories, his began with inspiration, the support of a strong family, and mentors whom he credits for teaching him the many facets of developing his talents and running his music business. “People have layers, like an onion. Talent isn’t about high notes and low notes, but instead how deeply you get into the lyrics,” says Michéal. His story’s layers are a rich palimpsest. Michéal’s grandfather moved to the US in 1896. Back then Michéal says they were all leaving Italy; historians refer to them as birds of passage—migratory labourers—to save money, with plans to return to Italy. His great grandfather did just that, working as a labourer building the New York City subway system, and then before returning to Calabria purchasing the family’s olive grove estate. Michéal was born in

serious, and talked about learning the language of music. This lesson stuck with Michéal and he knew then that he wanted to make a living at music, to express himself through music, to feel empowered and to learn.

His Italian roots were and are a major influence. Compared to other Italian communities in the world, his Italian roots weren’t lost in assimilation. CHIN, the local multicultural radio station was playing all the time in his family home. He listened to the best Italian compositions, stating that the heyday of Italian music was the 1960s and 70s. Canadian multiculturalism encourages immigrants to maintain their heritage while also being Canadian. This kept Michéal close and connected to his heritage,

He began studying voice with Maestro Pisapia a protégé of the great Italian operatic tenor, Enrico Caruso. Maestro Pisapia was stern, had a great attitude, and taught Michéal breathing exercises, Neapolitan songs, and the art of Bel Canto. Michéal’s passion for dynamic Neapolitan songs that require breath support and a broad range prompted him to learn to play guitar, piano, even some trumpet. He attended the Berklee school of Music for four years studying everything from arrangement, composition and music production to management, and developed lifelong friendships and relationships from his days at Berklee.

the language and the music he loved so deeply at an early age. He began singing in church, and as a large personality and extrovert from a family of equally big personalities, Michéal was encouraged by his parish priest and his immediate family to stand out. They highlighted his talents, and he was taught to speak up, to speak his mind, and to avoid blending in. Michéal says he enjoyed the attention and then as he grew up, he soon realized music was a great way to get girls! He went to Italy in 1971 with his mother and sang for relatives. On this trip, his uncle took him aside and told him to study if he was

His mentor Ann Ruckert advised Michéal to go to New York City. On July 4 weekend 1986, Michéal’s departure from Boston and his arrival in New York City were both heralded with fireworks thanks to the100th birthday of the Statue of Liberty. Michéal jokes that he thought it was all for him! Through a friend who was dog sitting, he stayed at the penthouse apartment of the great Leonard Bernstein in the famous Dakota building. Later that year Michéal was one of two tenors chosen to play at Carnegie Hall for a show headlined by Mel Tormé. Michéal developed the confidence to make a living at music, often doing commercials, pitching his reels and working as a session singer. He graciously comments that the ups and downs all added to his story. “All those struggles make you who you are, and motivate you to continue on doing what you’re doing.” Michéal lives his life passionately, with a strong emphasis on knowledge and experience. He has very intentionally become an expert regarding all his passions—his music, his family’s Olive Oil estate, and his Calabrian heritage. Michéal Castaldo’s latest release, Olive You, is available for purchase at Amazon, or iTunes and is carried in select stores in the Toronto area. Well, we did it: we survived another Canadian winter. While we certainly didn’t freeze this year, we still can’t wait for some hot weather. If you have a pool to help you keep cool this summer, even better. But, getting the pool swim-ready can be a daunting task, especially if you’re opening it yourself.

Electrical: Restore circuit breakers, switches, and time clock trippers to normal operating positions.

The reopening process starts the moment the pool is closed. Snow or rain can raise the water level or sink the cover. Since heavy debris can fall in, it’s better to remove it immediately rather than waiting till the spring. Reopening the pool means reversing the instructions for closing it. The following is a handy checklist:

Chemistry: Balance the water chemistry and check the levels frequently during the first few days until they stabilize.

Supplies: Take the supplies and chemicals out of storage and replace those that have exceeded the expiration date. Uncover: Remove the cover, and then clean it. Allow it to dry to prevent mildew before folding and storing it for the summer. Equipment: Reinstall or reassemble the pump, filter, and other removed items. Deck: Reinstall ladders, diving board, and other deck fittings. If used at closing time, most of the petroleum jelly used to coat exposed metal fittings will have weathered off. Use a dry terry cloth towel to wipe off the remainder if necessary. Plumbing: Remove the plugs and replace return outlet fittings. Refilling the Pool: Bring the water level up to normal.

Cleaning: Restart the circulation equipment and clean the pool.

Run the circulation system 24 hours straight for three days or until the water has cleared completely. Depending on how dirty the pool became over the winter, the filter must be backwashed frequently during this period. Test and adjust the pH and total alkalinity. You can reduce the pump operating time in one-hour increments once you’ve got the water in shape. Treat the water with an algaecide. After several hours of operation, test the chlorine level and adjust it as needed. If the chlorine level is high, do not use the pool until it drops to normal levels. If they were removed at the pool closing, raise the underwater lights from the bottom of the pool and install them in their niches. Turn on the electric power and start up the support system. Check for leaks and proper operation. If you find any problems, consult the owner’s manual or contact a local pool service company. Have the heater professionally serviced before you use it. If you don’t want to attempt this yourself, there are plenty of local companies who will get you in the swim with a minimum of effort and fuss. Then, when the mercury soars, you’ll be able to perform the first cannonball of the season! With info from poolsandspas.com

romantic glow When it comes to landscaping, most of us think grass, rocks, flowers and patios. However, beautiful lights and water features can transform even the smallest most mundane yard. But, what good is a beautiful and tranquil backyard if you can’t see it? Outdoor landscape lighting fixtures are available in a large number of styles that will match any home style or look. Landscape lighting placed along the ground can be used for a soft or romantic glow. If you’re trying to create a soft ambience to your garden path, these small lights can be perfect. Ground level lighting does not put off light that is as bright or harsh as light poles. If you’re using outdoor sitting spaces for gatherings, install lights on poles, posts, or in the trees of your yard. Since hanging lights cast a larger amount of light, they are better for large areas. In addition to gathering and walking places, don’t forget to illuminate water features in the yard either a birdbath or fountain, or even a waterfall. Underwater lighting is great for ponds.

Garden ponds are wonderful because they provide a tranquil and relaxing atmosphere. A well-designed pond turns an outdoor space into a vacation-like retreat, taking you away from the busy world. With a pond, you’ll be able to enjoy the sights and sounds of nature including interesting plants, running water and maybe even koi fish. It’s important that the design and construction of a garden pond are done right. Due to lack of knowledge, homeowners can end up with a sloppy eyesore rather than a relaxing water feature. YOUR STORY IN PICTURES WITH

STACEY NEWMAN PHOTOGRAPHY

There is an old adage that some things cannot be taught. Photography is an art that can be learned to a certain extent. What cannot be taught, however, is the ability to capture a complete story using a camera. A photograph is very much a story, told in a moment, filled with emotion, with colours and with emphasis on very specific elements. A good photograph isn’t a snapshot; it’s a creation as poetic and moving as the emotions it conveys. Stacey Newman is a Milton-based photographer. Born in Montreal, she grew up west of Toronto. Stacey was a writer first, starting to write at an early age. Little did she realize that her creative writing skills would eventually provide a strong foundation for her other passion— photography. Stacey’s first novel entitled The Beauty of the World was published in 2006. Her photographs have also been published all over the world, and she has volunteered her work for organizations in Canada such as Doctors without Borders, The SickKids Foundation and The Mike Weir Foundation. 58

“In my opinion, the best stories are character-driven. I have to know and understand the characters, or the subjects of my images. As a photographer, I must listen, observe, engage and then be able to capture the essence of my subject, regardless of whether it’s a person or a landscape or an inanimate object. It’s my job to tell a story using my camera.” Stacey Newman lives by these words. She has spent the last seven years learning the technical aspects of her craft, and she has built a portfolio of close to 20,000 photographs including her work in commercial stock, portraits, food and fashion, entertainment and travel photography. As an iStockphoto and Getty Images photographer, Stacey has contributed thousands of images to publications across the globe. When asked what her favourite subject is, Stacey quickly replies, “People. They are infinitely fascinating. Every person’s face is remarkable to me. Every line, every expression a person makes, every part of a person’s history and emotion is accessible using a camera. But,

You have to know when you’re seeing something real, something powerful.” Stacey brings this passion in particular to her portrait work and her journalistic photographs, which she contributes to a number of newspapers and magazine publications on a regular basis. Her warmth and outgoing personality are gifts that she doesn’t take for granted. They are part of what she brings to any photo session, whether shooting stock or a family portrait, her level of professionalism and her love for her work is always present. She approaches each photograph with care and attention to detail and the end results speak for themselves. Her photographs are full of life, simplicity, beauty, emotion, natural expressions, and each capture is tailored to suit its subject. “I don’t want people to think of a photo shoot as something they hate doing. I want them to have fun, to enjoy the experience and to remember it as a happy event. It’s my job to bring out your best side, your most natural expressions.”

No matter where her work takes her, no matter how many exciting places she may travel as a photographer, contributing to her local community will always be an important priority for Stacey Newman. “Milton is a rapidly growing municipality, but it is a community-oriented town and I love being a part of Milton, both as a resident and as a Milton-based business. We live in a beautiful region and we have an amazing community.” Whether you’re looking for family portraits, corporate headshots, architectural interiors, food shots or product images, Stacey Newman’s experience and talent promises that you’ll get emotional and creative photographs that capture your story, told your way...every time. Exercise and Pregnancy... By Benjamin Schoene from Fitness Etc...

To begin, it’s important to stress that this article is NOT meant to provide medical advice, but rather to look at some of the commonly accepted recommendations from the health industry for exercising during pregnancy. All women who are pregnant are urged to discuss any fitness plan with their doctor before beginning any form of an exercise regime. A few reasons pregnant women should exercise is to help prevent orthopedic issues, such as back and knee pain, as well as reduce the risk of postpartum depression. Another obvious and important benefit of exercise is that it can help prevent excess weight gain. The Institute of Medicine says that an average healthy woman can expect to gain up to 35 pounds of bodyweight during pregnancy; weight gain above this may simply be excess fat that will be difficult to lose after childbirth.

in any way), and performing Kegel exercises is common problems during pregnancy include hemorrhoids and bladder leaks, and Kegel exercises may help with these conditions. Traditional abdominal exercises that flex the spine, such as sit-ups, are not recommended however. Listen to your body and watch for signs you might be over doing it, such as dizziness, abdominal pain, etc. If you experience any of these warning signs, seek medical attention immediately. Drink lots of water to stay hydrated. Consider where you are in your pregnancy, as certain physical activities will become more challenging as the pregnancy progresses, such that some activities may become inadvisable. For example, during the later stages of pregnancy, when balance is compromised, aerobic and dance classes may not be good choices; jumping or spinning movements should be avoided as well. Prenatal Yoga is another great option. Yoga provides not only physical benefits, such as balance and flexibility, but can be a wonderful way to relax, de-stress and develop your inner strength. Breathing and relaxation are two key points to master for childbirth, and these are principles taught and cultivated in the practice of yoga. Learning proper breathing techniques through yoga will have numerous benefits throughout the various stages of pregnancy.

In general, it is recommended that pregnant women exercise for at least 30 minutes a day - it doesn’t have to be all at once, and can be broken up into two fifteen minute walks, or three ten minute walks, etc. If previously inactive, gradual progress is stressed; start your fitness regime slowly, maybe two five minute walks a day at first, progressing slowly to achieve the minimum of 30 minutes a day. In general, pregnant women can train consistently, and often can do much more than they expect, but it’s important to be cautious to ensure their own safety as well as the safety of their baby.

The bottom line is that a healthy happy mother usually results in a happy and healthy baby. If you are active before you become pregnant there is no need to stop, and if you aren’t, what a great form of motivation as you are now training for two! Remember, always check with your doctor before starting any type of fitness regime while you are pregnant.

A few recommendations for an active pregnancy include avoiding high risk activities (such as contact sports, or downhill skiing - check with your doctor if your intended activity seems dangerous

BREAST HEALTH a proactive & preventative approach By Gina M. Bello, Certified Holistic Health Therapist & Instructor

I am a woman, a consumer of products and reader of information. My view is that in the end, regardless of titles and what we think we know, isn’t that what we all are - just consumers and users of products and information? My personal interest in breast health comes at a time now when I’m in my mid-forties, when I’ve been asked by my family doctor (since turning 40) to have yearly screening mammograms for breast cancer. I am not an expert on breast health, but I am a pro-active woman. Media reports for years have been instructing women to take a preventative and proactive approach to breast health by routinely giving themselves “breast selfexams”. Easy enough, so I’ve been doing that for a number of years now. I’ve also made it a point to read as much as I can, and to actively research information about breast health, breast cancer, preventative therapies and treatment protocols. Having had only one mammogram since turning 40, I have to say that was enough for me – no thanks, I’ll pass on this yearly ritual. That single experience and the knowledge of increased health risk from actually having yearly mammograms, has urged me to put off yearly screening and so I’ve actively been seeking safe, non-invasive and alternative screening methods. The urgency comes as a result of seeing an alarming number of women - friends, family, and clients receive a diagnosis of breast cancer. Today we are hearing of more women at a much younger age than was once considered to be the average age (40-74), to be diagnosed with breast cancer.

Interestingly the Canadian Task Force on Preventative Health Care has released updated guidelines for breast cancer screening. After years of media bombardment urging women to give themselves breast self-exams, now they are advising to not routinely perform breast self-exams...what? Why? They do say however, these new guidelines do not apply to women with a higher-than-average risk. Often after routine breast self- exams, women find benign lumps. This sets them on a roller coaster ride of grief and anxiety. It looks like this; woman finds lump, visits her family doctor, receives more mammograms, possibly ultrasounds, and biopsies which contribute to her increased anxiety. So, the new recommendations are that women 1) ensure they are not at higher than average risk 2) be aware of their breasts – what feels normal vs. abnormal to them and 3) begin yearly mammograms at age 50. At age 50? So now I am just more confused. Some interesting facts: poor lifestyle, diet, high toxicity and high stress levels contribute to ill health and cancer. Some women just naturally have more dense and lumpy tissue and have what is known as fibrocystic breasts. Women with higher risk of breast cancer (those with a family history of breast cancers, specifically on their paternal side), have been found to be genetically linked by their father. Hormonal changes and imbalances may occur as we age and if our diet is laden with estrogen-dominant foods (meat, poultry injected with hormones, soya products) in excess women become more susceptible to breast cancer. On average 80% of breast lumps are benign. Although I mainly agree with the new guidelines, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation believes there’s a problem.

www.insidemilton.ca

64

The task force would have us skip routine self-breast exams in conjunction with clinical exams, as well as have less frequent mammograms – so we ought to be having them starting at age 50 now, not at age 40 leaving a 10 year gap in the screening process. What’s really going on here? In 2003, The Health Sciences Institute released a report regarding three myths about mammography. Torecap what was studied:

myth number 1

Mammograms are safe. Fact: Mammograms may contribute to existing cancer spreading by rupturing blood vessels that may cause the cancer to spread. The process consists of compressing and flattening the breast between two flat surfaces so that the tissue will be sparse enough to allow tumours to be revealed. It is uncomfortable for most women, painful and may cause bruising. And let’s not forget exposure to radiation. Radiation exposure from repeated yearly mammograms alone (not counting any other required X-rays) will increase a women’s risk of breast cancer by 20%. These are two main reasons I hesitate to continue having yearly mammograms.

myth number 2 Breast cancer caught at an early stage by a mammogram will reduce the need for surgery because it can be treated in other ways. Fact: A tumour large enough to be detected with a mammogram is already in an advanced state. Cellular changes and formation of tumours begin with inflammation of the tissue. It generally takes approximately eight years for inflamed tissue to develop into a lump. Higher incidence of breast lumps form in and around the lymph nodes and arm pit area and above the breastwhere the mammogram can actually miss finding lumps and tumours.

Inflammatory Breast Cancer, recently found to be a most aggressive form of breast cancer, cannot be detected by a mammogram. It usually begins around the nipple and areola and very quickly spreads over the breast presenting as a very itchy and scaly rash (like eczema) and may or may not ooze. In 2000 scientists in Denmark reviewed seven of the largest mammography studies conducted at that time. They found that women who underwent regular yearly mammography screening had about 30 percent more mastectomies and lumpectomies than women who

www.insidemilton.ca

65

weren’t screened. The rate of false positive results from mammograms is also very high, leading to unnecessary biopsies, radiation, mastectomies and lymph node removal. A National Cancer Institute study showed that over the course of nine mammograms for women between the ages of 40 and 69, the risk of a false positive was well over 40 percent.

myth number 3

Mammograms save lives. Fact: Mammograms have not been proven to save lives. Mammograms are used as a screening and diagnostic tool. It has in some cases found progressive tumours and patient’s lives have been saved by follow-up treatment. Statistically, studies that have been conducted do not support that mammograms save lives. So what are we as women, left with? To seek safer, non-invasive and effective screening tools for breast cancer. My search led me to find Thermography. Originally used in military operations to detect body heat with thermal imaging cameras with night vision technology, it has been found to be very effective in breast health screening for inflammation and possible tumours. In 1982, the FDA approved Thermography as an adjunct to mammography but not as a stand-alone diagnostic tool. A trained technician using specialized camera and software for Thermo graphic imaging is used to digitally photograph the breasts at different angles. There is no physical manipulation, no touching, and there is no pain and for me, the best news is that there is no radiation. It is completely safe. The equipment detects and measures inflammation in the body, and how the tissue responds to stimulus. The images are sent by the technician to a trained medical practitioner for evaluation based upon TH scores measuring lowest to highest risk (TH1 – TH5). Recommendations made by the medical practitioner will encourage follow up with family doctor for breast

ultrasound and/or mammograms. Typically for TH scores found to be between TH1-TH2, there is no need for further screening and the only follow-up required is scheduling a yearly thermography session. TH3 scores or higher will require a medical follow up with the family physician. Although not relatively new, Thermography is not as widely known or used and is not paid for by OHIP and therefore currently remains an “out-of-pocket” expense that for some is not easily affordable. Still, what amazed me was to hear of some cases where women who had thermography breast screening with TH scores of T3 and TH4 (medium to high risk), who had implemented dietary and lifestyle changes (incorporated regular meditation, and stress-reducing techniques), along with on-going detoxification protocols supplemented with bio-identical hormones, had actually reduced their risk. When tested with thermography after a year of implementing these changes, their TH scores had gone down to TH2 (low risk). Intuitively having put off mammograms, I recently signed up for breast cancer screening using Thermography and to my surprise it was recommended that I follow up with my family doctor. I chose to have a breast ultrasound before going straight for a mammogram. Fortunately, the ultrasound was negative. I feel relieved. As I age, I accept that hormonal changes are beginning for me as a woman at the onset of peri-menopause and it’s just part of the normal process of life. Knowledge and prevention are vital for our health. We are free to choose to be proactive and to choose safer, non-invasive and effective tools to assist us to monitor changes in our aging bodies, and as we deal with stress-the pre-cursor to so many illnesses in our lives.

Running out of time for your health... By Agatha Farmer from Madjam Fitness “I’m too busy during the week to fit in a class” is a statement I have heard over and over in my line of work. At MadJam Fitness we exclusively train women while providing a safe and comfortable atmosphere in our classes. While we can train women, and help them with nutrition and diet concerns and questions, we can’t help them find time to fit a class into their overloaded schedules. As mothers, wives, daughters, caretakers, cleaners, laundry doer’s, chauffeur’s, party planners we are continuously bombarded with tasks we must accomplish on this imaginary “to do” list or else the universe won’t rotate as it should. As a self-professed control freak I understand the need to accomplish and then restart that list every week, but there’s something important missing. We so often forget to allocate two or three hours during the week for just ourselves, our health, our beauty, our “me time” to centre yourself, to release your positive endorphins to help you gain balance in your life. We buy countless wrinkle creams, under eye potions, cellulite creams, and thousands of other beauty products. All those creams won’t hold off Father Time, but experts tell us that regular exercise, drinking water and eating a healthy, balanced diet will.

Ladies, we all want to look as young as possible for as long as possible as we age, but the only anti-aging agent that will help you stay radiant is exercise and a healthy lifestyle. If cellulite creams really worked none of us would have it. But, the truth is that approximately 80 percent of women have cellulite (as do the Victoria Secret models), but once again exercise and muscle toning will aid in reducing it. Out of an entire week of seven days, everyone has time to set aside two or three hours for your health and the health of your family. After all, a happy wife and mother who feels good about herself makes for a happy, healthy family!

The Open Road By Scott Robinson I have great memories about packing up the family car for day trips, fishing excursions, drives in the country and the annual pilgrimage to the family cottage. My parents didn’t receive much credit from the six children for this work of art. With an age spread of less than five years for the first five children (a set of twins included in the group), just determining who would be safest seated next to who was quite the guessing game. The Ford station wagon, with the rear seat looking at the car following us, contained the same padding as a concrete step. Times have changed for the vehicles that we get to drive, the comfort that they afford, the safety features that they offer and we don’t have as many families of eight cramming into a vehicle. For the cottage trips, we took two cars and pulled a boat behind the station wagon loaded with luggage and groceries. What hasn’t changed is our love of the road trip. It may take the form of driving country roads for the sake of driving them. Often with the thought of stopping for a bite to eat somewhere. Many other times, we have elected to travel and as some 85 percent of Canadians do when it’s vacation time, we load up the vehicle and the cast for an adventure. On the following page we show a variety of vehicles

70

that we would consider using for a road trip. The vehicles fit a number of different scenarios for those road trips. Some people rent a new car for their trip because they are considering that vehicle for a future purchase. Talk about the ultimate road test! There is something special about taking a long trip by car. It has nothing to do with efficiency, or getting to where you are going as quickly as possible. It has to do with viewing your vacation as an adventure, a journey - and appreciating the journey, including the process of getting there. When you travel by airplane, you step into a metal compartment. A few hours later you step out into a different place and usually in the same state of mind as when you left a couple of hours earlier. By contrast, when you travel by car, there is a sense of having moved through space, of having gone somewhere. Sure, there was a starting and ending point but there’s a keen awareness of having traversed the miles. You were there for every one of them. You saw things up close and personal. Memories get made. The old adage, “It’s not about the destination, but about the journey” still rings true. If you are one of these people, and you happen to be planning a vacation, driving is still the only way to go.

All About Boats

Boating season is a short one in Canada, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make the very most of it. If you’re wondering which type of watercraft might suit you and your lifestyle

FAMILY/CRUISING Bowriders These family boats are the most popular in the runabout/sportboat category and are equipped with extra seats and forward access to the bow, a convenient spot to relax and sun. Cabin Cruisers/Cuddy Cabins Recreational by nature, Cabin Cruisers are generally equipped with cooking, sleeping and bathroom facilities and are ideal for those who want to feel the sun above and the ocean below. Cuddy cabins are ideal for day cruising, watersports, and other on-the-water activities such as fishing and swimming. Deck Boats/Pontoons Deck boats have wide deck to carry eight to 12 or more passengers (like pontoons) but look and perform more like runabouts. They are powerful, too, making them excellent boats for skiing, tubing and wakeboarding. Pontoon boats give families with younger boaters a secure place to enjoy the ride or toddle about when at anchor, thanks to wide decks and “lay pen-like” side rails and gates. When equipped with larger engines they can be as quick as runabouts. Houseboats Houseboats are designed to offer lake house living on the water complete with spacious floor plans and modern amenities for entertaining, dining and sleeping.

Motor Yacht/Cruisers Large boats equipped with powerful single or twin engines, these craft are ideal for ocean cruising, navigating large rivers or the Great Lakes, as well as entertaining at the dock, and can stay on the water for days. Personal Watercraft Lightweight and maneuverable, personal watercraft are the perfect option for boaters looking for an exciting escape and enjoyable time on the water.

SKIING/WAKEBOARDING Inboard Ski/Wakeboard Boats Fast, wet and wild — inboard propulsion delivers the power and speed fans of water sports such as skiing and wakeboarding need. Jet Boats Like bowriders and deckboats, they offer comfortable seating and sunning areas, plus a speedy and exciting ride. They are distinguished from runabouts by their propulsion system, which is enclosed inside the hull.

FISHING Fish & Ski This craft allows boaters to enjoy the two most popular on-water activities; fishing and skiing. This family fishing and recreational boat has enough power to pull a skier or two, and to get to the fishing spot in short order.

All-Purpose Fishing Boats Built for versatility, these boats can be used in both salt water and freshwater. They are designed to navigate many different types of waterways so you can pursue many different species of fish. Bass Boats Bass boats have low, sleek profiles and are built to fish with two or three anglers on board. The minimum length of bass boats starts with 16 feet and can go up to 26 feet. Centre Consoles These open fishing boats are built to take rough offshore waters in pursuit of ocean fish. Rod holders, outriggers and other gear are common fittings onboard.

DINGHIES/INFLATABLES Dinghies are small, easy-to-transport craft, most often used as companion boats for larger vessels. Inflatable boats range in size from 8-foot dinghies for tenders to 30-foot high performance boats. These boats are suitable for saltwater and freshwater fishing, watersports and more.

SAILBOATS Sailboats differ from other types of boats in that they are propelled partly or entirely by wind; they use sails to transform the power of the wind into power that moves the boat through the water. The term sailboat covers a wide variety of sailing craft, each with its own characteristics and styles. In general, sailboats are distinguished by size, hull configuration, keel type, number of sails, use and purpose. With info from discoverboating.com

DID YOU KNOW THAT BOATING WITHOUT A LICENSE IN CANADA IS WORTH A $250 FINE? The Safe Boater Training Course was established in 1999 in response to federal legislation requiring all persons operating a boat in Canada to have licensed certification. All boat operators in Canada must carry the boater license that proves they have been certified. The Pleasure Craft Operators Cards are valid for life. The fastest and easiest method of obtaining boat operation certification is to write the Transport Canada boat exam online.

Boater Assist Canada is a member-based organization for the recreational boater in Ontario. Owned and operated by Boating Ontario with service centres in every major boating area in Ontario, staff is highly trained and ready to serve you. Boating Ontario is an industry leader with such programs as Careers in Boating, the world-renowned Clean Marine ECO program, and the Boating Safety program, and has been in existence for more than 50 years as a Business to Business trade association comprised of more than 530 members As a member, should you ever need assistance, help is only a 1-800 call away. The call centre is open from May 15 to Oct. 31. With the recent addition of the GPS Smartphone app, the call centre can see the boater’s longitude and latitude in real time to further assist with coordinating a response. On May 15, Boater Assist will start its first Boating Season province-wide, with more than 60 service centres covering most major waterways, 95 percent of where boaters navigate, including Lake Erie, Lake Huron, Lake Superior, Georgian Bay, Trent Severn, St. Lawrence, Lake Simcoe, North Channel and Muskoka Lake.
