With its museum, restaurants, events and culture, the change that the region has undergone is truly visible here.

The Ruhr Museum is situated in the former coal washery of the Zollverein Coal Mine, Shaft XII. It considers itself as the memory of the Ruhr Metropolis. With more than 6,000 exhibits, its permanent exhibition features the fascinating natural and cultural history of the Ruhr Area. The present, the pre-industrial memory and the region’s dramatic history in the industrial era are illustrated on three levels. Overnight in Essen.

In the morning visit of the German Mining Museum in Bochum, which provides comprehensive information on all the natural resources from the era of industrialisation to the present and is a must see during this journey. Then continue to Dortmund.

In the afternoon visit of Zeche Zollern. At first sight palatial redbrick facades and artistically adorned gables on buildings dotted around a grassy square are more reminiscent of an aristocratic residence than a coal mine. This was exactly one of the ideas behind the architecture of Zeche Zollern.

Today the “mansion of labour” is undoubtedly one of the most impressive testimonies to Germany’s industrial history. But the museum’s outstanding industrial architecture is only one of many different attractive facets. The various sections of the exhibition will take you into a world of harsh working conditions, and the stories of the men and women who worked in coalmining during the 20th century will bring this vividly to life.
