PORTUGAL

COUNTRY Portugal occupies the edge of the Iberian Peninsula; its frontiers are the Atlantic Ocean and Spain. A small country with just over 10 million inhabitants, some of its main economic activities is tourism. The islands, Madeira and Porto Santo and the Azores, are part of the Portuguese territory but with an autonomous parliament and government. Tourism is also one of their main activities, along with agriculture and fishing. Independent since 1143, Portugal is one of the oldest independent countries in Europe, it was a monarchy until 1910 when it became a republic.

WEATHER

PORTUGAL Portugal lies along the Atlantic coast of the Iberian Peninsula, only 6 hours away from North America and 2 hours on average from any other European capital. A small country with a very diverse landscape, mountains in the north and centre with amazing valleys and rivers, plaines bathed by rivers in Alentejo as we go southwards and the beaches of the Algarve with white sand and beautiful rock formations with a Mediterranean climate along the Atlantic coast.

INSIDER JOURNEYS

A friendly country with a long history, with remnants of the many people that occupied and developed it, from Phoenicians to Romans to Moors and finally a Portuguese kingdom since 1143.The adventurous Portuguese sailed around the whole world in the 15th and 16th centuries and nowadays we can feel the influence of all these other cultures touched in those days in the Gastronomy, the Architecture, the Decorative Arts, the Literature, among others.

Portugal is influenced on the coastal region by the Atlantic Ocean, so an Atlantic Climate is to be found along most of the coast. However, the Algarve coast gains with the warm influence of the Gulf current, changing the climate in the region to a Mediterranean one, something that can be felt and seen in the type of vegetation common of Mediterranean countries. Summers are warm, Winters are cooler. It can get stormy sometimes, but the number of hours of sun throughout the country exceeds 3000 in the southern part of the country. MARCH-MAY

FOOD & WINE The Portuguese love their food and even more so, their wine! From north to south the variety is huge, the north prefers their strong meats and stews accompanied by full bodied red wines from some of the 250 native grape varieties, or a salted cod baked in the oven paired with a reserve white. The coast offers such an array of fresh fish and shellfish, grilled on charcoal accompanied by a cool Vinho Verde. The south is the land of garlic, olive oil, and acorn fed black pigs. The Algarve goes Mediterranean with its oranges, figs, almonds that taste so good in the local traditional sweets.

NATURE Portugal is surprisingly varied in nature, considering how small the country is. From the craters of the old volcanoes in the Azores, turned into beautiful colourful lagoons, to the ravishing tropical vegetation and breathtaking cliffs of Madeira island, the vineyards of the Douro Valley, or the endless plaines of Alentejo just after the highest mountain in the country with its pure springs of water, until we get to the caves of the Algarve, in between the long white sand beaches and sand islands where the birds build their nests when fleeing from the cold weather of norther Europe.

HIKING IN MADEIRA MAJOR CITIES

Walking in the Levadas is a must when one visits Madeira Island, these are channels built to bring water to the farms for agricultural production. The views from some of these Levadas are scenic, breath-taking and a very healthy way to experience the destination.

Lisbon, Porto and Coimbra, are some of the major cities in Portugal worth a visit. Driving around the country is easy, there are motorways or country roads linking all the interesting cities and smaller towns full of history, with great restaurants, usually full of locals who will always be so happy to advise you on the best food to taste, how to taste it, and the local wines to go with it. The people are welcoming, English is widely spoken, and in case you do not understand them they will speak louder and gesticulate until you eventually understand.

SURF Portugal is known for the 230 km long Nazaré Canyon that produces some of the highest waves ever surfed. The highest wave measured so far reached over 30 metres and it put Portugal on the map as a surf destination, peak season being September to March.

This includes alterations to cruise itineraries and schedules including change of embarkation and disembarkation points. We are not responsible for any other travel arrangement affected due to the Third-Party Travel Provider’s cancellations or amendments. Amendments beyond the Third-Party Travel Provider’s control may involve a surcharge for the additional or amended services.

ANNEXURE TRAVEL TIPS FOR TRAVEL PRODUCTS These tips are not legally binding terms and conditions. You should obtain and read the Third-Party Travel Provider’s terms and conditions which are legally binding on you. Please check with the respective Embassy or Consulate of each country that you are travelling to, as many destinations require visas for both Australians and non-Australian passport holders. to share the parent’s bed and will not provide an extra bed. Additional charges may be levied for child meals. Where a child rate is provided in this brochure, an extra roll or fold-away bed is usually provided. Children are charged an adult rate if staying in a room without adults. River Cruises – shore excursions & water levels The nature of some shore excursions in Asia means that for some excursions there are no formal jetties. While staff are always on hand to assist, those with limited mobility may find these areas difficult to access. Due to the unpredictable nature of weather and its effect on river conditions and water levels, it may on occasions be necessary to complete some elements of the itinerary by land, rather than by boat, or to alter the route of the vessel including substituting some planned stops for others. Such changes can occur at any time without prior notice or warning and no refunds will be given in this instance. On the lower Mekong River between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh, large seasonal variations in water levels necessitate low-water and high-water itineraries. The only significant difference is a vehicle transfer to/from Siem Reap in place of cruising across Tonle Sap Lake. As a guide, low water itineraries are applied typically from January to early July, but this may vary depending on rainfall across the river catchments. Complaint Handling In the unlikely event that you are unsatisfied with any aspect of your Travel Product, you must immediately notify the Third Party Travel Provider of your Travel Product or travel consultant (please refer to your predeparture guide) to ensure we are given the opportunity to address and attempt to resolve any issue that you may raise at the time they occur. If a problem cannot be resolved to your satisfaction and you wish to pursue this matter further you must write to us within 28 days upon your return to the following address: Attention Customer Service Level 1, 503-505 Kent Street, Sydney, NSW 2000 Or: customerservice@insiderjourneys.com.au You must provide your booking reference number and full details of your complaint to allow us the opportunity to respond.

Ticketing For international and domestic departure, e-tickets will be issued upon payment and completion of the booking process. In some instances, an e-ticket on the flights or fares selected may not be able to be issued. Bookings that cannot be issued as an e-ticket will have to be changed to comply with e-ticket regulations. All other travel documentation, such as hotel, car hire, transfer and tour vouchers will be emailed to you as an e-document. Should the Third-Party Travel Provider issue paper vouchers, these will be posted to you. Accessibility Travellers with a physical or mental disability that may require assistance during their trip must advise us of their needs upon booking and declare all pre-existing medical conditions. This enables us to ensure the suitability of each booking to the individual traveller. Bedding configuration Requests for specific bedding types must be made at the time of booking, however, cannot be guaranteed. Please note that double rooms can be fitted with either double or twin beds and that single rooms are often smaller than other rooms. Triple rooms usually comprise a twinbed room with an additional sofa bed, roll-away bed or a fold-away bed for a third person.
