MADAGASCAR

IDENTITY CARD Madagascar lies in the Indian Ocean, 400 km off the African coast from which it is separated by the Mozambique Channel. Réunion Island is 700 km East Mauritius at 900 km. Surface Area: 587 000 km², length from north to south 1500 km and width from east to west 500 km. Population: 27 millions people according to estimates made in 2019 Density: 42 inhabitants per square kilometre.

165 million years ago, Madagascar already showed its uniqueness and originality by breaking away from the African continent to land 40 million years later, somewhere in the Tropic of Capricorn, in the shadow of the African continent with which it has so little in common. This island continent is known for its rich biodiversity: the luxurious tropical forest in the East, the desert like aridity of the South, the vast savannahs of the West, the lush rice fields and terrace of the central highlands and its volcanic

region and the turquoise lagoons of the North. The variety of climates, vegetation, landscapes, ways of life, habitats and traditions. The incredible melting pot of Asians, Arabs, Africans and the European gave the island continent its personality and its biodiversity. The evolution of the living species of the Grande Ile or literally: “Great Island” has followed a different path from that of the neighbouring continents. This enables every traveller to be submerged in a particularly unique flora and fauna, endemic to Madagascar.

Capital: Antananarivo (Tana) with 2.5 million inhabitants. Main cities: Antsiranana (Diego Suarez) to the north, Majunga (Mahajanga) northwest, Tamatave (Toamasina, the first port in the country) on the east coast, Antsirabe and Fianarantsoa in south-central and Tulear (Toliara) to the southwest. Government: Independent republic with presidential character endowed with the following institutions: Senate, National Assembly and Prime Minister.

Ethnic groups: 18 as well as minority communities like the Comoros, the Indo-Pakistani and Chinese. The French are the largest European community with nearly 25,000 citizens.

Not far from the Equator Madagascar is influenced by the dry season/rainy season, but also by the notion of spring/summer/autumn/ winter. Our rainy season runs from midDecember to mid-March with the probability of tropical storms to cyclones, thus not the best season to travel, but it remains possible to visit some regions. The months of April to June after the rainy season are good for travel with a pleasant and mild climate. The country is lush and green after the rainy season. July and August are our southern winter months, it can be cool in the morning in the highlands. September to mid-December are ideal for traveling around the country. MADAGASCAR HIGHLIGHTS

AMAZING WILDLIFE Approximately 95 percent of Madagascar’s reptiles, 89 percent of its plant life, and 92 percent of its mammals exist nowhere else on Earth. And of course, the lemurs remain emblematic animals of the Island and they are present in all the parks. Madagascar is also a haven for bird lovers as the Island is home to some astonishing 120 endemic species of birds, but also butterflies, insects, chameleons, the very rare predator: Fosa and the nocturnal and very strange Aye-aye.

PEOPLE & CULTURE

COMORES MOZAMBIQUE

The Malagasy, who are they? The Malagasy has a complex origin: before the African, the Arab and the European contributions, Madagascar received, twenty-five centuries ago, its first inhabitant: Austronesians. Subsequently, Indonesian (Malacca) and Bantu immigrants from subequatorial Africa integrated with these Proto Malagasy. The dissemination of a small population in this vast space led to the formation of demographic isolates assimilated to “tribes’’. The Betsileo and the Merina live in the highlands. The Sakalava and the Mahafaly dominate the plains of the west and southwest; the Antaimoro, Antaisaka, and Tanala populate the coast and forest of the southeast, while the Betsimisaraka dominate the eastern coast. The north of Madagascar is mainly populated by the Tsimihety and the Antakarana. The Antandroy and the Bara rule the semi-arid regions of the south.

THE COAST AND THE ISLANDS Madagascar is 5000 km of coastline, the majority of which is beach and most of which is deserted and isolated. To take advantage of these superb sites, it will be necessary to go to Nosy Be and its surrounding archipelagos, or to the small island of Ste Marie on the East coast or to the superb lagoon of the South-West in the region of Tulear. Numerous scubadiving and snorkeling spots are scattered along the coast.

INCREDIBLE BOTANIC NATIONAL PARKS There are currently 43 protected areas managed by Madagascar National Parks. Most are on land but many are marine reserves. Some reserves are classified as “Integral Natural Reserves” and are only open to researchers and scientists.

Accompanied by porters and a local guide we hike from village to village. The area is relatively wet, it rains often, so you need

Day 10, 11 & 12 Andringitra national park We go to the waterfalls, the “alien” site, the base camp. The walk is not difficult and the view towards the Tsaranoro valley and the big cliffs is wonderful. With an altitude of 2,658 metres, Pic Boby, the highest point in the south of the country, is the second highest peak in Madagascar. Recognizable by its enormous granite dome, it is the objective of our day’s ascent. We leave our camp in the early morning. We leave our camp in the early morning and set off in the mists to attack the mountain. The difference in altitude is not significant, but the bumpy terrain reminds us that the hike is a sporty one. The arrival at the summit for the sunrise is an unforgettable moment. Then we have to take the way back. Nights in camping. (B-L-D)

The day takes place in the canyon of the monkeys, a small narrow valley where it is not uncommon to come across the maki and the sifaka, two species of lemurs typical of the region. The first night is spent camping. The next day we walk to the natural pool. We walk quietly through amazing landscapes. are of high quality. Let’s start the trek! We guide you inside these huge straight faults where sun rays rarely get through and amazing plants grow along the walls. We’ve discovered several traces of big crocodiles there. Sakapaly river runs right through these mountains, we “navigate” inside those canyons and put up our camp on the white sandbanks. Our hike passes inevitably inside sections of forest where lemurs can be observed easily but difficult to get close. This trek is quite a sustained pace, there is no particular difficulties apart from the heat, the walk in the soft sand or in the water up to the knees, short going up hills but very steep, going down hills inside canyons might need ropes, underhand itching plants, pebbles rolling under shoes, numerous saka-saka, deep cliffs where it is better not to have vertigo, pass rocks piles with stability and nimbly. So no difficulty … apart from being isolated, we are indeed far from everything here, so these 5 days of trek are just unprecedented. In addition of all that, several evening campfires with guides and porters will be unforgettable moments. Nights are in tents or under the stars of the southern sky. (B-L-D)

Day 14 Makay - Miandrivazo All good things must come to an end, we leave the local crew and Makay with regret. We join back Malaimbandy on the track, then the main road to Miandrivazo where we’ve been for quite some time. We are back in our little bungalow by the pool. (B-L-D)

Day 15 Antsirabe - Tana Drive to Antananarivo via Antsirabe where we visit local artisans ; work of zebu (cow) horn, shaping and polishing, transformed to tat jewelry and different inside decoration items ; miniature workshop (bicycle, cars …) recycled tins and cans. Lunch in town and drive along Ankaratra massif towards Antananarivo. (B-D)

TOURS

October / November are 70 % for epiphyte orchids and 30% for terrestrial. We move in the rainforest and in savannah areas. The sites visited Anjozorobe and the park of Perinet and its surrounding reserves. The park of Ranomafana in the rainforest and further south the dry region of Isalo and Zombitse. Two other elements are very important: a very good guide who will know how to talk passionately about “his” orchids, and a pace of travel to allow you to search, study, list and photograph. In a word, being at the right time in the right place with the right people.

Please check with the respective Embassy or Consulate of each country that you are travelling to, as many destinations require visas for both Australians and non-Australian passport holders. paying adults, generally the hotel will expect the child to share the parent’s bed and will not provide an extra bed. Additional charges may be levied for child meals. Where a child rate is provided in this brochure, an extra roll or fold-away bed is usually provided. Children are charged an adult rate if staying in a room without adults. River Cruises – shore excursions & water levels The nature of some shore excursions in Asia means that for some excursions there are no formal jetties. While staff are always on hand to assist, those with limited mobility may find these areas difficult to access. Due to the unpredictable nature of weather and its effect on river conditions and water levels, it may on occasions be necessary to complete some elements of the itinerary by land, rather than by boat, or to alter the route of the vessel including substituting some planned stops for others. Such changes can occur at any time without prior notice or warning and no refunds will be given in this instance. On the lower Mekong River between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh, large seasonal variations in water levels necessitate low-water and high-water itineraries. The only significant difference is a vehicle transfer to/from Siem Reap in place of cruising across Tonle Sap Lake. As a guide, low water itineraries are applied typically from January to early July, but this may vary depending on rainfall across the river catchments. Complaint Handling In the unlikely event that you are unsatisfied with any aspect of your Travel Product, you must immediately notify the Third Party Travel Provider of your Travel Product or travel consultant (please refer to your predeparture guide) to ensure we are given the opportunity to address and attempt to resolve any issue that you may raise at the time they occur. If a problem cannot be resolved to your satisfaction and you wish to pursue this matter further you must write to us within 28 days upon your return to the following address: Attention Customer Service Level 1, 503-505 Kent Street, Sydney, NSW 2000 Or: customerservice@insiderjourneys.com.au You must provide your booking reference number and full details of your complaint to allow us the opportunity to respond.

Ticketing For international and domestic departure, e-tickets will be issued upon payment and completion of the booking process. In some instances, an e-ticket on the flights or fares selected may not be able to be issued. Bookings that cannot be issued as an e-ticket will have to be changed to comply with e-ticket regulations. All other travel documentation, such as hotel, car hire, transfer and tour vouchers will be emailed to you as an e-document. Should the Third-Party Travel Provider issue paper vouchers, these will be posted to you. Accessibility Travellers with a physical or mental disability that may require assistance during their trip must advise us of their needs upon booking and declare all pre-existing medical conditions. This enables us to ensure the suitability of each booking to the individual traveller. Bedding configuration Requests for specific bedding types must be made at the time of booking, however, cannot be guaranteed. Please note that double rooms can be fitted with either double or twin beds and that single rooms are often smaller than other rooms. Triple rooms usually comprise a twinbed room with an additional sofa bed, roll-away bed or a fold-away bed for a third person.
