ACTING ANOC PRESIDENTâS MESSAGE
O
ur annual gathering at the ANOC General Assembly is always a very special occasion. Nowhere else outside of the Olympic Games, does the whole world gather together, united behind a shared love of sport. But this yearâs General Assembly was even more special than usual as it came at the end of the highly successful ANOC World Beach Games Qatar 2019.
A total of 97 NOCs participated in the Games making it a truly global event. Well over 100 NOCs competed in qualification events for the Games and many other NOCs arrived in Doha to enjoy the action for themselves. Over six days, we had the privilege of seeing some of the worldâs www.facebook.com/ANOCOlympic
best athletes from 14 young and exciting beach, water and action sports compete to become the first ever ANOC World Beach Games champions. Our highly productive partnership with the Olympic Channel allowed NOCs, IFs and athletes all around the world to watch the Games and ensured it was a truly global platform. Creating new opportunities is what the ANOC World Beach Games is all about. Creating opportunities for the worldâs best athletes to connect with a new generation of fans; and, creating new opportunities for the worldâs National Olympic Committees (NOCs) to connect with new athletes and new sports. Through the Games, new, long-lasting relationships have been developed; between NOCs and International Federations (IFs), National Federations, and athletes. These relationships will help strengthen the cooperation between the NOCs and IFs for the benefit of the entire Olympic Movement.
It is clear that we are strongest when we work together. This strong message of cooperation was reinforced at our General Assembly where once again we had more than 1,000 delegates from throughout the Olympic Movement. Not only did we have 204 NOCs in attendance, but we also had representatives from the IOC, IFs, Organising Committees and many other Olympic stakeholders. It once again proved an unrivalled opportunity to hear the thoughts and ideas of you, the NOCs, and present on how ANOC continues to protect, serve and promote your interests. It was also a chance for Continental Associations and other organisations to network and exchange ideas. ANOCâs focus is of course the NOCs. Our mission is to continually find ways to improve the support we provide NOCs and their athletes. But we know that our ideas and initiatives can complement the work of the IOC and the whole Olympic Movement. Of course, special thanks go to our hosts, the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) and its President, H.E. Sheikh Joann Hamad Al-Thani for the excellent organisation of the ANOC meetings. In just over three months we managed together with the Local Organising Committee, ANOC, NOCs and IFs to prepare a world-class environment for the ANOC World Beach Games and ANOC General Assembly and ANOC Awards. The ANOC Awards 2019 was another celebration of the NOCs and their athletes as we honoured the best athletes from the last five Continental Games. Inside this magazine you can recap on what was a wonderful evening. We enjoyed an excellent two weeks in Doha and three global ANOC events. Despite the great successes we know there is room for improvement and we will spend the upcoming months evaluating our events. We wish all of you the best season greetings and look forward to continued good cooperation to the benefit of all NOCs. www.anocolympic.org
