FROM THE EDITOR Curtis Lawrence Sr. is a native of Gainesville, Florida. Upon graduation from high school, he enlisted into the United States Army. He served honorably for 24 years. He toured Germany, Saudi Arabia, and Panama. He retired as one of the top Recruiters in the Raleigh Battalion as On Campus Recruiter for University of North Carolina at Charlotte Army ROTC. Curtis is married to his lovely wife Tonya, a native of Gastonia, North Carolina. Following the birth of his daughter, Curtonia, the realization that he would not be able to share precious memories of her grandmother with her impacted him. In addition to this he realized he only had a few photos of his mother, and the quality was not the best. Thus, his passion to provide quality photos for his family and others was birthed. He has since provided quality images for generations to come. His portfolio contains many celebrities, athletes, chefs, ministers, and authors. Yet, he cherishes photos of his daughter, and sons, Curtis Jr, and Marcus, finally his four grandchildren the most. His first booked event was a family member’s wedding, using only a pocket camera The outcome inspired him to pursue and improve his craft. A special thank you to Tracey and Debra for believing in him. Curtis realized he had an eye and natural talent to create beautiful memories. He developed his talent through mentoring and training with professional photographers.

Today, he is a highly sought-after photographer. Through the encouragement and support of family and friends, Curtis founded Insight Photography, Gastonia, N.C., where he provides an array of services such as family portraits, weddings, and private and corporate events. Curtis inspires himself to focus and go forth, by reciting his favorite quote “Faith don’t fail me now.” His firm foundation and faith have allowed him to not only become the founder of Insight Photography, but to become editor and chief of INSIGHT Magazine. Curtis continues to believe in the power of the team and uplifting his community. He is excited and proud to present this issue, against all odds as it focuses on your total well-being, mind, body, and soul.

COVID-19 AND THE AFRICAN AMERICAN EXPERIENCE By Kenneth L. Nichols, Sr.

Across the nation we hear echoes of individuals from government officials to the local storekeeper screaming “it is safe now, we are OK.” “Don’t worry about wearing your mask.” “Did you get the vaccine? If you do not, it is ok, the herd immunity will protect you.” These words, for a community of people who have felt the stinging whiplash of questionable information and distorted messages for so long, are hard to swallow. COVID-19 has affected every socioeconomic class. However, it has disproportionately affected the African American community. COVID-19 deaths continue to affect our personal lives. We almost feel as if we are gaslighted with respect to what is truth and what is reality when we look at what has been said and what we have experienced.

Question: But where does all this doubt and skepticism come from and why has the African American experience with COVID-19 been such a torturous ride? Response: Well, we must go back to the numbers. Let us take the time in the next few paragraphs to look at the reasons why our experience has been in contrast with others. Let us start with infection rates and mortality. The fact is that African Americans make up 12 to 13% of the population of the United States. However, in some analysis early in the pandemic, we saw up to 33% infections in some areas. The mortality numbers at that time were more damaging as it hovered in the same 30% range. In some states, the death rate soared in the African American community to as high as 50%. This contrasted with our non-Hispanic white counterparts whose mortality rates were at the same time 12 to 13%. Now as of June 2021, we have total infection rates in the neighborhood of approximately 34 million people and 600,000 deaths. This drops the total mortality rate to just under 2%. But the trauma to the black community has clearly been done. Next, let us look at why our mortality rates have been so

8

INSIGHT MAGAZINE

high. Unfortunately, the mortality rate in the African American community was deeply related to what we in the medical field called “comorbidities”. These include common diseases like hypertension, diabetes, coronary artery disease, obesity, and even sickle cell. Due to the nature of COVID-19 and its inflammatory effect on the vascular system, these diseases were exacerbated causing the pro-inflammatory effects to accelerate disease processes. Therefore, we saw higher incidences of strokes, heart attacks, and respiratory failure which, in many cases, led to death. For those who survived COVID-19, multiple long-term effects have also been seen. These now include chronic respiratory problems, chronic pain, arthritic illnesses, kidney disease, and even blindness. Question: Why did African Americans encounter COVID-19 at a higher rate in the first place? Response: Unfortunately, that is steeped in the socioeconomic status of which many of us find ourselves in. According to the 2018 census, we found that up to 20% of African Americans live below the poverty line which at that time was under $25,000 for a family of four. However, for those of us who are employed, employment is more likely to be in the form of service. Question: Could you clarify the types of service? Response: These include the fast-food industry, cafeteria and dining, housekeeping, cashiers, personal/nurses aids, and other areas of employment which require interpersonal engagement with individuals to perform their duties. In addition, traveling to and from these areas of employment in many cases required public transportation. It was not a simple task to just “work from home”. In many instances that meant no income at all. Question: Are there any other areas that we as African Americans should be concerned with? Response: Of course, the last area to look at would be the

social structure to which many black families in our country find their civic composition. Even today the black family is still structured around social foundations like the church and other clubs and organizations where they can find strong guidance and connection. All these constructs were broken in some form or fashion during 2020. This left so many voids of characteristic empathy that would normally support a shattered community.

and virility of the virus to decrease which will result in a decrease in its incidence. However, thousands in the African American community continue to stay away from vaccination.

Question: Now that we have a vaccine to combat the virus, why do you think African Americans are hesitant to take the shot?

Response: We know that this disease process has rocked our communities. It has left us bare, numb, and aching inside. I, as a trauma surgeon, have seen a significant rise in physical assault and deadly injuries in our communities. The emotional pain boils over into vicious anger with no positive outlet. The only way I see us moving towards the positive relief from this tremendous weight that has been laid upon our communities is to work together to reconstruct our organizations, our churches, and to empower community social workers and mental health providers. We are sitting at the crossroads of change. Reinvigorating our community centers and our churches to bring us back to civility is a foundational part of our healing.

Response: Many African Americans have significant skepticism due to their personal/family experience with the American medical community. With the Tuskegee syphilis experiment (1933-1972) still in the memory of many currently alive, the use of a “rushed” vaccine, breeds seeds of distrust and thoughts of manipulation. As of now it is reported that approximately 69% of all Americans in the United States have been vaccinated and thus, we are approaching “herd immunity.”

Question: Where do we go from here now that we are at this stage of our experience with COVID-19, how do we move forward?

Question: Can you explain exactly what “herd immunity” means, for our readers? Response: Herd immunity is when approximately 70% of the total population has been vaccinated, causing the potency

BEARD GAME Taking your beard game to the next level by Jozette Cooper

N

o matter what level you are on with your beard growth, just remember it is not how you start in the game, it is how you get to the finish line or win the game. For some men, growing a beard comes with ease but for other men it is a true task. But do not get discouraged whatever level you are on here are some tips to help you get started or get you to that next level.

10

INSIGHT MAGAZINE

Level 1 This level will see how bad you really want to grow your beard. You are in the mirror, and you are giving yourself the pep talk “we are going to do this." You must stop shaving! Omg! Your face will be itchy! And it may not look its best. It may be patchy and uneven. At this level, which is your 0-2 weeks, is the stubble and at 2-8 weeks the itch from hell. This is where a good beard oil will come into play and a good boar brush to calm down the itchiness. Remember the hair that comes out your face is different from the hair that comes out your scalp. Before you wash your face, brush your beard area for 5 minutes; not hard or rough but to remove the dead skin, exfoliate and stimulate blood flow to the beard area. Make sure you wash your beard with a good beard wash. Sulfate free will be your best choice. This will leave your skin well hydrated. A beard oil after will lock in the moisture for your skin and your beard making them both soft and less irritated as it grows in. In about 4 weeks you should be ready for the next level.

Level 2 As your beard grows you must make sure you are giving your body the correct nutrients that it needs. Eating fruit and vegetables with a balanced diet will give your beard a great start at maintaining a great beard.

12

INSIGHT MAGAZINE

Oranges, Brazil-nuts, raisins, potatoes, kale, and spinach are the best for your beard. Vitamin b5, vitamin e, biotin, inositol, and niacin can also help promote hair growth. At this level, your patches should start to fill in. You can now trim it and give it shape. Now remember you are still growing it and it is still in the newcomer level. You only have been in the game for 8-16 weeks. Wash and use your beard oil on a regular basis. Try to be mindful of pulling the hairs on your beard. At 16-30 weeks you are off the beard bench, and you are getting some beard time in. It is taking its shape and you are getting the looks. Receiving compliments from friends, partners, and fellow beard gamers. Now would be a suitable time to use a beard balm which nourishes and protects your beard but do not use a lot as it could be a little heavy depending on your beard texture. Now remember living a healthy lifestyle is beneficial not only to your mind, body, and soul, but also beneficial to your beard game. So get plenty of exercise, reduce stress, and get plenty of sleep.

Level 3 The beard! This is 30 weeks plus. You have a full beard that has formed into this impressive masterpiece. Your challenging work and dedication has paid off now and people in the street are really stopping and commenting on the shape and the length and how distinguished you look. At this pro beard game level your routine of how you take care of your beard is important. Make sure you keep your beard hydrated as much as possible. Using a beard brush or comb once a day to assist with your cleaning, detangling and styling of your beard. Apply beard oil or balm. For the gray, silver, and white beard gamers you need to really be mindful of what products you put on your beards. Your beards can have a mind of its own. You want to make sure to use beard conditioner to keep your beard soft and shiny. If you use a product with color, make sure it does not stain or dull the beard. Choosing the right color clothing will do wonders for your beard game too. Make sure your clothing compliments your beard when you step out for work or play.

here will be occasions in life that you will have conversations with people, and they will stick with you forever. It can be as simple as someone telling you their life story and immediately your own life can be forever changed. Insight Magazine had the pleasure of sitting down with artist, celebrity designer and milliner, Marquis Burns, and that was the exact experience in which I am speaking about. Marquis Burns was born in Dayton, Ohio and was raised by his grandmother due to his parents battling with substance abuse. Despite his tough upbringing he refused to be a statistic. He attended Western Kentucky University on a full ride football scholarship where he continued to embrace his love for hats. Since he could remember, Burns, always had a love for hats. The first hat that he fell in love with was a cowboy hat that he saw in a gas station. Unfortunately, his grandmother could not afford it however, that is when his uncle Rex Burns stepped in and got the hat for him. He developed a fascination with brims and boots. It was not until college that he could afford to buy the hats that he wanted. It was often mistaken that he was from Texas due to his fondness for wearing cowboy boots and hats. “I rocked what I rocked” “I wore what I wore, and I could care less what other people thought” Marquis exuberated a great deal of confidence when people would question his outfit choices and was not concerned about the opinions of the commentators. “I am always going to be Marquis Burns.”

illiam “Big sleeps” Stewart has been called a lot of things in the entertainment ‘business over the years – most are a variation on his lifetime nickname, “Sleepy." However, no one has ever called the Canadian actor, producer, writer and musician “not great at promoting himself.” He has been great at spreading the word over most of his professional career, including his early days as a Street Team Rep for BMG Music Group. There, he excelled at the gift of gab and built a sensational buzz about entertainers. His memorable promotions included organizing and hosting huge parties, especially loading up fans with music and swag. The Toronto native got a lot of attention at an early age as an amateur rapper. Big sleeps was even asked to open for some big names in hip-hop, including Naughty by Nature, Kool Keith, Usher and Ludacris. His first TV work was on “Island Underground,” a look at various Canadian alternative subcultures on City TV. This soon led to roles in a variety of independent films as well as the TV series “Blade." Today, William “Big sleeps” Stewart’s face – or at least his behind-the-scenes skills – can be seen in a variety of film, video, and multimedia productions. He has been part of shows that have tremendous fan bases, such as “Coffee & Kareem,” “iZombie,’ “Fringe” and “Arrow, as well as popular movies, “The Day the Earth Stood Still” and Seth Rogen’s “50/50.” He is also a producer and writer of “Cloud Van,” online comedy series, where he portrays a crazy version of himself. Most notably, he’s the host of “Hollywood North Radio,” where he

Real Estate Investing for Next Stage Retirement! We have all heard the worst-case scenarios: pensions and Social Security benefits are on less-than-solid financial footing, and they may not provide the steady retirement income needed for your golden years. You might even be considering an alternative approach to retirement income and thinking about devising a retirement real estate investing strategy to give you solid streams of passive income — and avoid the roller-coaster of 401(k) plans which may or may not provide the financial foundation you need later in life. Here are four retirement real estate investing strategies to consider in this often lucrative (though intimidating) form of passive income generation.

Retirement Real Estate Investing Made Simple What is retirement real estate investing? Retirement real estate investing is simply the process by which you accumulate real estate assets for the purpose of providing streams of passive income before or during your retirement years.

Which types of real estate investments are available to supplement your retirement income? We are glad you asked! Contrary to what many people think, retirement investing with real estate is not limited to acquiring single-family homes. There are other options to build passive income wealth for retirement. Other types of real estate such as commercial properties, multi-family units, apartments as well as real estate investment trusts make for an impressive addition to your portfolio. The key, as with all areas of investing, is to diversify your assets and ensure you keep an eye on all the areas of your financial operations. With any of these options, you should work with a trusted real estate professional if you are unfamiliar with the process. Let us talk about the most popular one first, single-family homes. You can reap the benefits of owning a home in two ways:

36

INSIGHT MAGAZINE

1.

Fix and flip: This is an extremely popular method to quickly stack funds for your retirement. It involves the purchase of a home, making repairs and updates, then selling it for a profit. Repairs may take several months to complete, but once your sale is done, the proceeds are paid to you in one lump sum. You can save the money or reinvest it into another deal to grow your retirement nest egg.

2.

Rental property: It is no secret that real estate continues to appreciate or increase in value over time. That means that what you buy today should be worth more tomorrow. If you choose to buy property and lease it out, you can price it to cover the mortgage expenses plus an additional income stream for yourself. Instead of receiving one big payout, you would be receiving monthly payments from your tenant(s).

Commercial property is also becoming a popular tool in real estate investments. Acquisition of the commercial property is a bit more complicated than residential, but it is possible if you have the time and patience. They usually require more money upfront and take longer to close. You will need to decide if it makes more sense for you to rent it out to a business (i.e., retail, office space, etc.) or retain the property and run your own business out of it.

Finance

Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) are companies that buy and develop commercial property to operate them as a part of their own portfolio. It allows you as an investor to share in the profits of those income-producing properties without the burden of having to buy one. Multi-family units and apartments are another avenue for creating additional retirement income. These usually involve rental income from multiple units in a single building. Property management professionals are often utilized to oversee the operations of these types of properties.

What makes real estate investing such a powerful retirement strategy? Aside from the expected passive income cashflow — which we will tackle in just a moment — there are three key advantages that retirement real estate investing has over other investing strategies, such as investing in the stock market or building up the coffers of your 401(k).

1

There are huge tax advantages with owning rental properties, including the cost of repairs, depreciation, interest and travel. If set up properly, your real estate investing business can help reduce your tax liability in the form of write-offs and can save you from many of the needless fees that accompany many other forms of generating income for retirement, such as investing in the stock market or contributing to a 401(k).

2

Pay off the mortgage of your rental property — with other people’s money! Namely the rent paid by a tenant. The patient real estate investor realizes if they plan accordingly, and let simple compound interest take over, that they can (over the course of a few years) acquire a powerful passive income stream, with little or no money out-ofpocket.

3

Real estate appreciates in value. It is not 100% guaranteed due to unpredictable fluctuations in market value, but if you choose a suitable, and invest in a solid property with potential, then you are more than likely to not only see an increase in cash flow, but also, net worth.

What is the best way to get started with retirement investing in real estate? There is a simple answer: Prepare yourself. Develop your knowledge and skill set as a real estate investing entrepreneur. Make sure you have access to the funds that you will need to get started. Talk to a lender and find out what their requirements are before you retire if you plan to finance the deal. You may need to show a solid employment history and proof of income to qualify for a loan. When you are ready, and you feel you have the requisite resources, dip your toe in the water. While there is no guarantee of return with any type of investing, but if you stick with it — and remain patient until your abilities match your ambition — realizing your dream of steady, predictable income might be closer than you think.

Chef Monica

Level Up Recipes and much more xcuse me? Oh no she did not! I beg your pardon? Is she talking to me? At this point you are not what Chef Monica is talking about. I am talking about my personal accountability session with my own healthy being.

Well, somebody had to make the chef level up to match her own nutritional game. That is right, you got it I was not holding up my own health and wellness bar. I will just be d@$ned, again! I can not get the Specialist off of my neck, and I cannot run from my professional friends; I was caught. It was time for me to Level Up. So, one beautiful day I strolled into Empowerment Nutrition on Union Road to see my friend Kiki’s new storefront. She watched me come through her doors and said: “oh wow, I almost didn’t recognize you. You look great.” I responded: “thank you, I am just so grateful to be alive.” We chatted, and I ended with my testimony. We talked a little more and she reminded me that I am still her. I kept going back because my spirit was led there. Each day my body was being restored and it did not take long for me to learn that something about me was getting better. Kiki began to counsel me but the turning curve for me

came when she repeated back to me the same health diagnostic that my specialist said to me over a year ago. That is when I knew God was showing me the way. It was time for me to level up on everything I was teaching about food, health and eating to live longer for MYSELF. I was not eating, and I was not hydrating my body properly. I was starving my body without realizing what I was doing. You will often hear me say; “I don't surround myself with ‘yes’ people," because I don't. I am not the easiest person to win over; but Kiki made a believer out of me that day. Had she not stopped my personal madness, I may have collapsed in the streets somewhere. I will be forever grateful for her showing me a better way. Somebody must train the trainer. Somebody must check on the strong, because we fall down, and we fall short. We all are human, and we must level up. Everybody needs uninterrupted sleep in the evenings. We must find a way to relieve stress, visit our doctors regularly, consume a healthy diet, drink 8-10 glasses of water daily and exercise (walking is sufficient) at least 3 times a week for 60 minutes. The lessons I have learned from Kiki at Empowerment Nutrition rescued me. She reminded me of all the valuable teachings that I have been taught in my college education and 25 plus years in the food and hospitality profession. We are never too old to learn. The Epitome of Success Fused with

#BlackGirlMagic. by Francesca Ellana

Cocoa Brown is an inspiration for us all. From being a single mom to making a staple name for herself in the entertainment industry, her story is the epitome of success fused with #BlackGirlMagic. The businesswoman and comedian sat down with us and shared the inside scoop on how she makes it all work together! You are a single mom, comedian, actress and businesswoman. How do you balance it all and take time for yourself? Honestly! The grace of God! Lol. But I have an incredible village and staff that help me balance it all. Even during the pandemic, my girlfriends and neighbors were a Godsend to me, providing support whether it was watching my son or lending a caring ear. Who are some of your favorite role models? I really look up to Viola Davis, Angela Bassett & Phylicia Rashad. Funny in high school my 5 year plan was to be Clair Huxtable. I just absolutely love how classy, humble, and graceful they are, even with all their successes.

CB

If you had a choice to pick your lead in a role, who would it be and why? I would have loved to work with Chadwick or Michael K, the way they BECAME their characters was simply amazing to me. But my bucket list of leading men, I would love to work with are Will Smith, Denzel, Al Pacino & Don Cheadle. Black women are known for their passion, strength and ability to elevate in any situation, the pure game changers of the industry. How are you using this gift to inspire others? I share my gift through my transparency. I show my fans the highs and lows of me, so they never feel they have some unrealistic goal of “always having it together." I also mentor many young and older women in finding their peace within the storms of life and going after your dreams on your own terms.

Re-Inventing the Wheel

W

by Joylette Hilliard

elcome to Insight Magazine, Mr. Rhamel Richardson, known to many as Rhamel Rich. I would like to personally thank you for sharing your journey with our readers.

Tell me about your humble beginnings? I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York and resided in the Red Hook Community. I was raised by my parents. My dad was a Vietnam Vet, a community advocate, lead singer and musician. My mother is a strong educated woman, who continues to pour into our family and community. We lost our dad to cancer, yet he continues to live within us. My home and family life were great. The challenges occurred outside of my home, which I referred to as the battlefield. As a young man I desired to be independent. I became a father of two at a youthful age. I worked at Grace Messenger Service on Wall Street to acquire my independence. As a young man I dreamed of entrepreneurship.

I experienced the disappointment of a contract failure, yet I refused to give up. I had to refocus and reinvent my wheel. During this time, I learned valuable lessons about myself. During my transition I met Scott Rowe, aka DX Max. I pursued economic freedom and entered a new genre. Is it ever too late to start over? Listen, I could have given up and justified it, but that is not in my DNA. I embraced a generational talent. I reintroduced myself as a fashion designer, taught by my mother. I had the pleasure of working in the fashion district of the world, which included Midtown Manhattan, 31st and Broadway. I served as the fashion designer of B Rich Design and made clothes for Sylvia who is the famous owner of Sylvia’s Restaurant in Harlem, N. Y, Melba Wilson, Dr. Dre, the radio personality, and the Apollo models, Shari Headley, and Malik Yoba.

What motivated you to take the first step?

Who do you admire and why?

always viewed myself as a “one man esquire.” I avoided illegal operations, and traveled throughout New York, Philadelphia, and various states selling items, not stolen goods, but quality goods. I attested this drive and determination to my parental influences, gift of gab, and work ethics. I continued to grind.

That is easy, my brother; film writer and director, Matty Rich. At the age of 16 he wrote and produced the movie, “Straight Out of Brooklyn” and also “ Inkwell”, which starred Duane Martin and Jada Pinkett Smith. I am thankful for him and his many accomplishments. He currently resides in L.A.

How did you level up? never denied my humble beginnings, nor viewed myself as insignificant. Every job, every encounter, prepared me with life lessons for my next endeavors. In 1989 I released my first rap single, entitled “Power”. It was produced by Eric Isles, Tracy Carn, and me. arduous work began to pay off and doors opened. I was recognized as a rapper and writer of music. During this time, I met Donald D, an artist under Ice T’s label, Rhyme Syndicate. Ice T heard “Power'' and signed me under his label.

How do you keep grinding during a setback?

INSIGHT MAGAZINE

I know that Covid-19 has affected the industry in many facets. How has it impacted you? I have had the pleasure of working with music agent Mark Cheatum who currently runs the music division at CAA. He has worked in the music industry all over the world. Rhamel’s favorite event that he produced was held at the Miami Arena, which featured Snoop Dog, Jodeci and Lady of Rage. The onset of Covid-19 prevented our last event. But I am confident that as things become more stable and safer, we will promote more events.

MEET ANITA Philanthropist Entrepreneur Model

In all your accomplishments, what is your greatest joy? I have met many people in the music and fashion industry. I have traveled extensively and made my parents proud. Yet, my greatest accomplishment is establishing a solid relationship with my children and grandchildren. Men, we can acquire wealth, and notoriety, yet nothing supersedes the trust, love, and admiration of our children. Wow, thank you for sharing your journey with our readers. Listen, Insight readers, stay tuned for Mr. Rhamel Richardson’s next level!! Level Up, my brother, level up!!!

Level Up by Maya Feemster-Jones

C

ovid has ushered in the season of an influx of catch phrases. There have been high trends of new business ventures from budding entrepreneurs, as well as those who are refining and re-branding established businesses. The common theme that has emerged from the time and space of pandemic living is “Leveling-up." As a coach, I always ask what that phrase means. However, the consistent language surrounding this phrase is, elevating our life!

54

INSIGHT MAGAZINE

How are you leveling up? The fact that you are not just living but thriving during a pandemic is a level up within itself! It is a call for each of us to live a fulfilled life, a life that is focused on working and executing our personal passion of impactful service. Do not know have clarity in what you are enthusiastic about? Tell me more about what awakens you from your sleep. What is that thing that seems to show up in your life without an invitation? That thing that you just cannot turn away from. That is your passion my dear friend…it is your internal invitation to a work that has your name engraved on it. How will you level up? It all begins with a goal in mind. Define your passion, or as they say in the old school, “put a name on it." Once you create that goal; I invite you to create at least 3 action steps, which create a pathway to achievement. Your goal could be becoming a mental health counselor, as you desire to aid those in trauma from the impacts of COVID. Action one could be researching schools with accredited programs. Action step two could be deciding whether you desire a licensed professional counseling tract or a licensed

counselor social worker. Creating this clarity can aid one in homing in on a program that caters to one’s niche. Action step three could be applying for the program of choice. Those level-up steps may seem small, however when you look back, you have made a major impact on your overall goal achievement. Leveling-up is not just about creating a look, it is more about creating opportunities for oneself through making impactful decisions. How have you used this time and space of COVID to level up? What skillset do you have that is naturally attractive to others? How will you utilize it to live well, and aide others in doing the same? What do you want your legacy to be when your time here has expired? Each answer can be found in the manner to which you level up while dancing on the life dash (time between birth and death). As a seasoned Life Coach, I invite you to finish this year strong, you are not too late to make good on your desires/goals set January 1st, and every day is another closer to seeing yourself “Leveled-Up”!

Making Mental Health a Priority By Dr. Renee Davis

Mental Health matters! This is not just a tagline. It is an appeal to make mental health a priority. Mental health is as equally important as physical health. Mental illnesses, such as depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, schizophrenia, are health conditions that involve changes in one’s emotions, thinking, behavior, or a combination of these. These conditions can be situational (short-term) or chronic (long-term). They can affect how we manage stress, treat ourselves, relate to others, make decisions, and function every day. Most of us have experienced, or will experience, episodes of sadness or nervousness; however, this does not mean that we necessarily have a mental health condition. In the mental health field, if symptoms persist more than two weeks and adversely affect a person’s functioning, then professional assistance is recommended. The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported that one in five U.S. adults (20%) lives with a mental illness. These conditions do not discriminate based on race, color, gender, identity, or socioeconomic status. Anyone can experience mental health challenges. The good news is that mental health issues are treatable. There are everyday activities that one can do to manage stress levels and promote mental wellness that are free or inexpensive. These activities include physical exercise, engaging in social opportunities, and self-care. There are numerous psychological benefits of physical activity, such as decreased symptoms of depression/anxiety, decreased stress, better mood, and improved sleep. Examples of social activities include talking with a trusted friend/family or being involved in a community activity, such as volunteering. Volunteering can counteract the effects of stress and anxiety, by improving self-esteem and mood, giving an individual with a sense of purpose, and providing the opportunity to meet new people. Social interactions with others is also important to feel connected and increase one’s sense of belonging. These connections with others can improve mood and one’s outlook on life. Self-care may include treating yourself like you want others to treat you and taking time for yourself. This means investing in you! Meditation, which is helpful with depression and anxiety, can help increase concentration and focus. Other helpful exercises include journaling your thoughts and feelings, getting adequate sleep, and seeking help when needed. Avoid unhealthy habits such as drugs and alcohol and think positively. Maintaining a balanced, healthy diet is also good for your mental health. Fashion

Runway Trends

Turn around and do it again. This is your last run, get it right!” First thing I hear as I walk through the door to check-in for my first Charlotte Fashion Week. Rita Miles, the mastermind behind this whole week, was on the runway making sure models were walking at the correct pace, hitting their mark for the cameras, and not looking down on the runway, because you should never look down on the runway. First impressions are everything and for those that are like me, and this was your first time attending, the impression was on point. Rehearsals finally wrap up and the models head to the back to start getting their hair and makeup done for the show. Doors open to the public around 6:45 for cocktail hour and the people start making their entrance. Charlotte Seen guests understood the assignment and came dressed to impress. There were a few people I had to ask if they knew the models were in the back getting ready because they looked as if they were going to be walking down the runway! Anyways, from well-known designers like YSL, Gucci, and Versace to new designers that have the appearance of a promising future in the fashion realm, the red carpet was flooded with a variety of looks that were social media worthy. The sneakerheads also cannot be left out of this conversation, some

exclusive kicks were spotted with the most notable being the Red October Yeezy’s and the Off-White Green Strike Dunks. By 7:30 everyone has hit the bar and is now seated with their Tito’s Vodka and Cranberry cocktail or Hahn Pinot Noir, eagerly waiting for the show to begin at any moment. Finally, the main lights shut off and the stage lights are on; the show is about to begin. Rita Miles brings the Mayor of Mooresville out to thank everyone for attending and she says a few words of her own to set the energy before the DJ drops the music and models begin to walk. Each run had a few songs particularly curated for their design and as a music connoisseur, I must say I was impressed. As the music begins, the models flawlessly come out doing everything they practiced in rehearsals. Which I was even more amazed at because now they are doing it in six-inch heels and wardrobes that had trains the length of the runway itself. Each designer got a brief introduction before their models hit the runway but some of the designers like Aubrey Harley, Classic Man Boutique, Stois Atelier’s Black Widow Collection needed no introduction.

All of the models and designers did a phenomenal job on the runway. For the show to be as successful as it was, the hair and make-up crew, stylists, photographers, videographers, DJ and volunteers needed to also be on point and they exceeded in their roles. A huge shoutout to Rita Miles for putting together an amazing event, Insight Magazine is looking forward to what is in store for next year! .
