Pakistan and the Chinese firms will sow hybrid chilli crop

As per the initial negotiation between the two sides, Litong Food in collaboration with the Guard Group of Pakistan will sow highyielding hybrid chilli crop over 5,000 acres of land during the coming season while another 3,000 acres will be sown on its own in Pakistan.

As per the plan, this area under the chilli crop will be increased to 200,000 acres of land in the future. Setting up of a processing plant after achieving 50,000 metric tons of hybrid chilli production and a breeding station to

ensure the transfer of technology to chilli production is also part of the proposed collaboration.

Guard Agricultural Research & Services (Pvt) Ltd’s CEO Shahzad Ali Malik said the Chinese government had short-listed its two companies under its CPEC projects in agriculture and livestock. Litong has been selected for Agriculture while Royal Company has been selected for livestock projects.

He said his company was already experimenting with the sowing of high-

yielding hybrid chilli seed in Pakistan for the last six years and got very encouraging results. He claimed that the Chinese company keeping in view the track record of successful promotion of hybrid rice, chilli and tomatoes contacted them to work in collaboration with them.

It has also been planned to set up a 500 acres model farm in Southern Punjab which would start working by the end of October after the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between both companies.

Saudi Investment Company intends to acquire a 30% stake in TOMCL

Pakistani meat processor The Organic Meat Company Ltd. (TOMCL) announced that a Saudi investment company, which invests in agricultural commodities, has expressed its intention to acquire a 30% stake in TOMCL.

“We at this moment inform you that the Saudi Agricultural and Livestock Investment Company (SALIC), a Saudi Joint Stock Company owned by the Public Investment Fund, has conveyed an interest in acquiring up to 30% shareholding of the company,” said TOMCL in a filing released to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX).

The company informed that SALIC had appointed Price waterhouse Coopers (PwC), an audit firm, to conduct due diligence on TOMCL.

The Pakistan meat exporter shared that the proposed investment is currently in a discussion phase and no binding arrangements of any kind have been agreed upon with SALIC.

“The proposed investment will be subject to among other things an agreement on the commercial terms and conditions and obtaining all applicable internal and external approvals,” it added.

SALIC was established by Royal Decree in 2009 as a Saudi joint-stock company owned by the Public Investment Fund.

“Its doctrine stipulates that all its investment activities should be both inside and outside the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in order to achieve a food

security strategy by providing food products and stabilizing their prices. This is done through establishing subsidiary companies or through national, regional, and international partnerships,” states information available on its website.

Earlier in May, TOMCL was awarded contracts worth $1 million to export pet food to Europe and the US, becoming the first Pakistani firm to export pet food to these regions. The company has been awarded multimillion dollar contracts for the supply of its products to the Middle East.

As per TOMCL’s financial statements for the period ended March 31, 2022, the company saw its sales grow by 28% over the same period last year to reach Rs3,449 million.

Hurricane Ian causes huge losses to Florida’s agriculture industry

Before the storm, citrus production was already forecast to drop by a third compared with the year before. Estimated losses could run as much as $304.2 million. Agriculture losses in Florida from Hurricane Ian’s high winds and drenching rains could reach $1.56 billion, with citrus, cattle, vegetable, and melon operations among the hardest hit, the University of Florida reported in a preliminary estimate.

The school’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences said there could be many impacts that are yet to emerge from flooded acreage and depend in part on whether some damaged crops can be replanted to salvage some of the winter vegetable growing season.

“There’s still a lot of uncertainty,” said Christa Court, an economist and director of economic analysis for the institute. “The effects can be very different in a single location.”

The estimated losses this year are for a high scenario of $1.56 billion and a low potential loss of about $787 million. That’s in an area of Florida where total agricultural production is valued at more than $8 billion on an annual basis, according to the report.

“It’s not completely devastating to the entire agriculture industry in the state,” Court said during an online news conference. “Some of the seasons were just getting started.”

Hurricane Ian swept ashore Sept. 28 in southwest Florida as a Category 4 storm with winds estimated at 155 mph (250 kph), then bisected the center of the state, where most agricultural production is located. About 5 million acres of farmland were affected by the storm, according to the UF report.

Before the storm, citrus production in Florida was already forecast to drop by a third compared with the year

before, in part because of winter freezes and ongoing disease problems. Now, a primary source of orange juice for much of the nation will take another hit, with losses estimated at as much as $304.2 million.

And the harvest season for oranges, grapefruit, tangerines and similar fruit was just beginning.

“The impact on Florida’s affected commodities cannot be understated, especially the heartbreaking damage to Florida citrus, an industry already facing significant challenges,” state Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried said in a statement.

The University of Florida loss estimates do not take into account the impact on consumer prices, but the storm is likely to press prices upward and force orange juice producers to rely even more heavily on California and imported oranges from Latin America..

No wheat shortage despite crop damage in Sindh says Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation (PASSCO)

The National Assembly Standing Committee on National Food Security and Research was assured that there will be no shortage of wheat in the country despite the loss of stocked grain in Sindh in the wake of heavy rains and floods in the country.

The Managing Director of Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation (Passco), Saeed Ahmad Nawaz, presented details to the committee on the loss and damage of stocked wheat in Sindh and Balochistan and said that the loss of wheat has been estimated to be Rs4 billion.

He explained that in Khairpur, 26,956 tonnes of wheat were damaged, while in Hyderabad, 564 tonnes of wheat were damaged due to a flash flood. Out of the stock of 22,00,000 lakh and 66,000 tonnes, Passco has lost 52,670 tonnes of wheat in Sindh.

The Ministry of National Food Security and Research (MNFSR)

Secretary Zafar Hassan disclosed that the ministry has finalized the minimum support price for wheat for 2022-23 and has shared it with the prime minister. He said that the cost of production of wheat has been estimated to be Rs2,495 per maund.

MNA Rao Muhammad Ajmal Khan, who chaired the meeting, directed that the prices of fertilisers should be monitored properly by the relevant authorities.

Mr Ajmal feared that due to the flood situation, the area under wheat cultivation during the coming rabi season would be reduced by 20 per cent. He estimates that the flood waters will recede and the rehabilitation process will take at least two months.

Agriculture, livestock losses

The impact of the worst-ever flooding in Pakistan has been severe on agriculture in Sindh, Balochistan and Punjab, with data shared by the

provinces with the MNFSR showing an estimated loss and damage of Rs298 billion.

In its briefing to the MNFSR, the Sindh Agriculture Supply and Prices Department said that cotton and date palm crops were completely destroyed while sugarcane, Kharif chillies, onion, tomato, Kharif vegetables, rice, sesame, and some other small crops were partially damaged.

In Punjab, the total area damaged by the floods was 0.83 percent, which was about 30,340 acres of the total cultivated area of about 3,670,000 acres.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, out of the total acreage of 778,937 under twelve different crops, 14,397 acres were damaged. The KP government estimated a loss of Rs3662.70 million. The losses and damage to crops reported were maize, rice, oil seed, tobacco, vegetables, orchards, pulses, cotton, dates, potato, and cotton.

Date palm was grown on an area of 101,379 acres. Details show that 69.774 acres of rice were damaged, followed by 40.70pc of chillies, 20.31pc of the tomato crop, 27.95pc of onions, 54.57pc of Kharif vegetables, 7.18pc of sugarcane crop, and 22.55pc of sesame crop.

The Agriculture and Cooperatives Department of Balochistan has sent estimates of losses to the provincial government to seek funds to the tune of Rs30,916m for compensation of losses and damage. The department sought the provision of subsidies to the affected farmers during the forthcoming seasonal crops.

United Business Group urged incentives for flood-hit farmers

The Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry’s United Business Group (UBG) urged the government to work out result-oriented packages of incentives for hard-hit flood-affected farmers to avert an impending hovering food crisis.

Talking to a delegation of flood-affected farmers drawn across the country led by Haris Ahmad, UBG Chairman Shahzad Ali Malik, here on Wednesday said the super flash flooding has crippled our agriculture sector, crops along with thousands of livestock and stores of wheat and fertilizers have also been damaged prompting

warnings of looming food crisis. He said the damage to the agriculture sector could also be felt across the globe. He said Pakistan is one of the top producers and exporters of cotton and rice crops that have been devastated by the flood. As such half of our cotton has been destroyed, an alarm to global cotton production in a year when cotton prices have soared as other major producers from the US to China have also been hit with extreme weather. He said double-digit inflation sent the prices of basic goods soaring in Pakistan making it difficult for farmers to buy agricultural inputs.

Sidel opens a new hub for PET recyclingCorporate Insights

Sidel has opened a new hub dedicated to PET recycling. At its unique small-scale PET recycling pilot line in Octeville, France, Sidel will develop its understanding of PET recycling with the aim of giving comprehensive support to the market as it switches to greater use of recycled PET.

Seeking carbon neutrality, the packaging industry is in the middle of a transition period that aims to replace virgin PET with recycled PET. Sidel is engaging with this transition to circular packaging solutions, enabling r-PET to be more widely used. The unique smallscale PET recycling line will allow Sidel to develop advanced knowledge about the recycling of food-contact PET bottles. As Sidel packaging experts assess the impact of additives and primary packaging materials on r-PET

resin the facility will become an important reference for raw material producers, recyclers and recycling regulatory organisations. The line will also enable Sidel to further develop its own knowledge, ideas and innovative packaging solutions.

Helping to meet demand for r-PET

Demand for r-PET is increasing and the market is developing as brand owners seek carbon neutral solutions. The amount of recycled PET in packaging globally has increased to 8% compared to 5% in 2018. In Europe, the average is already 15% and is projected to grow to 35% in 2030.1

“There is a big move towards recycled PET, but demand is outstripping supply,” says Naima Boutroy, Sidel’s Global Packaging

Expert. “The market still has a lot to learn and we can provide valuable insights. There is a variability in recycled PET resin grades, and standardisation is still in development. We need to address this to create the best possible finished bottles. Our line will test the recyclability of post-consumer PET bottles from different feed stocks, including additives and caps as well as labels, inks and glue. We will be working with traditional Sidel customers such as brand owners, converters and co-packers, as well as other suppliers like raw material producers, recyclers and regulatory organisations, to enable the scaling-up of r-PET capacity. We can also check any innovations comply with bottle-tobottle recycling.”

MULTIVAC celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2022

Relief and joy were written on people's faces: After two years of enforced break due to Corona, over 9,000 guests from Germany, Switzerland and Austria, together with the owners of the company, finally celebrated last Saturday the 60th birthday of the companyunder the motto "One World, One MULTIVAC".

Showing great joy and enthusiasm, all the MULTIVAC staff members caught up on the celebrations of the company's 60th birthday last Saturday at the Wolfertschwenden site. The event should actually have taken place last year. But the corona pandemic put a stop to all that. “We are very happy, that the situation has normalised sufficiently to allow the celebrations to take place,” said Christian Traumann, joint Group President of MULTIVAC.

It was not only the MULTIVAC staff from the company headquarters in the Allgäu, who were invited to the birthday party, but also all the staff from the subsidiaries in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. The interest was of course huge, as shown by the large number of applications. In

addition to the current staff members and their families, the MULTIVAC pensioners were also invited. For many this was a journey into their own past. Because a large number of the current MULTIVAC staff are the second or even third generation to work at the company. Over 9,000 guests took part in the celebrations. Christian Traumann: “For us it was one of the highlights of the year, that we were able to come together after the enforced break due to the pandemic, and that everybody was finally able to celebrate in a highspirited way.”

Colourful entertainment program enthralls large and small

There were hourly tours for the guests through the Production departments. The visitors to the Technical Innovation Center (TIC) and the Technical Application Center (TAC) were able to experience at close quarters, how MULTIVAC's experts design and test individual machines and lines for customers from around the world.

Musical entertainment was provided by the MULTIVAC Traditional Band and the Wolfertschwenden

Musicians. Later in the evening there was no let-up in the music with the band Hindervier. The evening was filled with exuberant joy and wild fun with dancing and hot rhythms.

And there was also plenty of sustenance provided for the bodily wellbeing. A large number of food stands were spread across the 133,000 square metres of company grounds, each of them offering delicacies from the many countries, where MULTIVAC operates. The guests were also able to enjoy local specialities such as curry sausage, rustic oatcakes with cheese, or more exotic dishes - for example wokcooked vegetables with mie noodles.

And the little ones were also over the moon

“It was a really successful party with lots of fun and joy,” said Guido Spix, joint Group President of MULTIVAC. “I was personally very pleased, that so many took up the invitation to the Summer Party. To experience the wonderful atmosphere was quite unique. We were also delighted to see the company owners and their families, who celebrated the anniversary with us all.”

ICI Pakistan to partially divest share capital ofNutriCo Morinaga

The Board of Directors of ICI Pakistan Limited has authorized a partial divestment of approximately 26.5% of the issued and paid-up share capital of its subsidiary NutriCo Morinaga (Private) Limited (NMPL) to Morinaga Milk Industry Co. Ltd, a Japanese dairy giant, at an aggregate sale price of $45.08 million, which translates into approximately $2.07 per share.

In a notice sent to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), ICI Pakistan said that it would continue to hold approximately 24.5% of the issued and paid up share capital of NMPL, a subsidiary of ICI Pakistan, upon completion of the transaction.

“The approval is subject to, inter alia, obtaining the requisite approval of the shareholders of the Company pursuant to section 183(3) (b) of the Companies Act, 2017, and all necessary regulatory and other approvals required,” read the notice.

Last month, Japanese dairy giant Morinaga Milk Industry sent a conditional offer to ICI Pakistan to

acquire an aggregate of approximately 33.3% of the issued and paid-up share capital of NMPL from NMPL’s existing shareholders including that of ICI Pakistan.

The acquisition was set at an aggregate price of $56.6 million which translates to approximately $2.07/- per share, ICI Pakistan had said then.

NMPL is a joint venture between ICI Pakistan, Morinaga Milk, and Unibrands (Private) Limited to locally manufacture and distribute nutritional formula products, and was recently merged with NutriCo Pakistan (Private) Limited, which was involved in the import and distribution of select products of Morinaga Milk.

Moreover, Moringa Milk Industry, in its filing to the Tokyo Stock Exchange last month, said that the company has been exporting infant and toddler milk to Pakistan since 1978 and sees the South Asian country as an attractive market, boasting the fifth-largest population in the world, with continuing population growth forecast.

“Moreover, the Morinaga Milk Industry brand has gained broad recognition in Pakistan over many years through the export business, giving the Company a high chance of achieving further rapid growth in the Pakistan market.”

“By acquiring management control over NutriCo Morinaga … the company considers that it will be able to capture growth opportunities, leading to the further development of the Morinaga Milk Industry brand infant and toddler milk business in Pakistan and contributing to the growth and health of the consumers of the Company products,” it said.

Back in 2020, NutriCo Morinaga (Private) Limited commenced commercial operations of growing-up formula products at its manufacturing facility in Sheikhupura, Punjab.

At a cost of Rs5.5 billion, the manufacturing facility was the first asset investment by a global Japanese dairy and food company in Pakistan.

Chr. Hansen is a global, differentiated bioscience company that develops natural ingredient solutions for the food, nutritional, pharmaceutical and agricultural industries. Adapting to a changing business environment, outlook for the new financial year is 7-10% organic growth.

2021/22 highlights

Revenue amounted to EUR 1,218 million, up 13% from EUR 1,077 million in 2020/21. Organic growth was 9% in 2021/22, mainly driven by volume growth. The Lighthouses (Bioprotection, Fermented Plant Bases, Plant Health and HMO) delivered 14% organic growth combined, while the remaining core businesses delivered 9% organic growth. Food Cultures & Enzymes organic growth was 7% and mainly driven by volume, but with a positive impact from pricing. Health & Nutrition organic growth was 14%, driven by volume.

EBIT before special items (b.s.i.) amounted to EUR 326 million, up 9% from EUR 298 million in 2020/21, while the EBIT margin b.s.i. was 26.8%, down from 27.7% in 2020/21. The decrease was mainly driven by a negative impact from higher input costs and increased cost levels to mitigate challenges in the supply chain, which was partly offset by the strong sales performance, pricing initiatives and efficiency improvements.

Free cash flow b.a.s.i. amounted to EUR 172 million, down from EUR 196 million last year, as the cash flow from operating activities b.a.s.i. was impacted by higher taxes paid.

“We have delivered a solid financial performance despite a volatile macroeconomic and geopolitical environment. Organic growth reached 9%, EBIT margin b.s.i. 26.8%, and the free cash flow b.a.s.i. ended at EUR 172 million in line with our latest guidance. Looking into 2022/23 we will continue to adapt to a changing business environment for both us and our customers and aim to deliver solid organic revenue and EBIT growth in 2022/23 as we progress on our strategic ambition to differentiate as a bioscience company focused on microbial and fermentation technology platforms.” says, Mauricio Graber, CEO, Chr. Hansen.

Outlook 2022/23

Cost-effective Compressed Air System design for food & beverages industry

Imtiaz Rastgar graduated from the University of the Punjab, Lahore in 1966. He is founder and Chairman of Rastgar Engineering Company Pvt Limited as well as Rastgar & Company. He also headed the Engineering Development Board of Pakistan from 2004-2007. Insight Food Technology is thankful to Mr. Imtiaz Rastgar for contributing an article based on his decades of experience.

Often referred to as the 4th utility after electricity, water, and gas, compressed air is the only major industrial power source generated on site by users bearing full financial and legal liability for its quality. Compressed air is a key utility supporting the food packaging and food processing industries in Pakistan. Compressed air must be contaminant-free to ensure the protection of the food products processed in each facility.

While the compressor is the largest energy-consuming component of your system, it is the usage, the overall design, and how well the system is maintained that determines the demand placed on the compressor and, therefore, its overall energy consumption. Pressure losses can arise from poor system design, incorrectly dimensioned distribution piping and of course the purification equipment.

A thorough understanding of compressed air quality and testing standards is therefore indispensable when designing your system to achieve the purity levels your application requires. The International Organisation for Standardizations (ISO) sets three such standards, ISO 8573, ISO 12500, and ISO 7183. Which standards you should apply will depend on the specific contaminants you aim to remove and the purification equipment you will rely on to do so.

To achieve the stringent air quality levels required for today’s modern production facilities, a careful approach to system design, commissioning and operation must be employed. Treatment at one point alone is not enough and it is highly recommended that the compressed air be treated prior to entry into the distribution system to a quality level suitable for protecting air receivers and distribution piping. Point of use purification should also be employed, with specific attention being focused on the application and the level of air quality required. This approach to system design ensures that air is not “over treated” and provides the most cost effective solution for high quality compressed air.

Three types of Compressed Air Systems

The food industry, faced with the question, of how to specify a safe and efficient compressed air system, must first define how compressed air is used in their facility. The U.K. Code of Practice for Food Grade Air provides a comprehensive resource on compressed air systems in the

Precision Agriculture: A way forward

Humans are mainly defined by their activities what they do for a living and meeting their daily demands explain about their approach to life. In over 200,000 years of human history on planet earth agriculture has been a crucial element that helped in shaping and defining modern human being. Hunting was the primary approach for satisfying food demands, this was a risky practice owing to challenges involved in seizure and killing of wild animals. Later on, during the neolethic era cultivation and harvest of crop resulted in satisfaction of food demand in easier way. This assurance of sustainable food supplies resulted in to averting their nomadic hunting life style. Assurance of food alongside the modern industrial revolutions across has resulted in to a population boom and in just last 3 centuries the human population has jumped on from 1 billion to nearly 8 billion people. This explosive population growth is now testing planet’s food producing limit as we will have to come up with enough food to feed 2 billion extra mouths by the year 2050. In face of other major challenges like resource constraints, climate change, water issue, heat waves etc. this looks like an impossible task.

In previous century mankind was able to keep up with this challenge thanks to the “Green Revolution” of 1970’s, during which extensive use of resources, inputs and mechanization resulted in massive food productions. However, this all was achieved at a great climatic cost, today the issue is pretty much similar but conditions are even worse as the sector need to ensure food security in force of depleting resources and without causing any more harm to the planet. Father of the Green revolution Dr. Norman Borlaug was awarded a Nobel Prize in 1970 for his immense contribution to the revolution and

surely anyone who can contribute to this challenge once again in face of these tough situations surely will deserve an equal honor.

Agriculture sector is center to many of our today’s mysteries, from resource constraint, food security to climate change. A recent estimate from the IPCC puts that about a quarter of the total greenhouse gas emissions today are caused by agriculture sector and is the single largest consumer of annual fresh water supplies. In face of all these challenges there is a dire need for such an ingenuity that ensures global food security in face of diminishing resource pool.

28 Article Insights Insight Food Technology

In this regard the modern precision agriculture and digital technological system can provide a necessary platform for dealing with these challenges. The technology use a range of sensors and data collection platforms focusing on observing numerous climate factors, providing real time forecasting for aiding daily operations and giving best time line for resource application (water, fertilizer etc.).

The smart climate systems can assist in reducing greenhouse gas emission by channelizing all farm operations in such a manner that it gives minimum emission in the end. Furthermore, remote sensing and ultrahigh resolution imagery sensors can be used for early detection of disease infestation in field and giving important information about possible dry spells in the field. This smart farm management systems can help crops to reach their full genetic potential without the excessive use of chemical

inputs, ensuring higher yields as well reducing negative impact.

In addition to improving yield outputs the digital approach in agriculture field can also help in better supply chain management leading to fewer losses of uneaten products. The digital system enable a direct line of connection between the growers and major suppliers, resulting in fewer internodes that are meant to be passed earlier. This reduces the amount of crop wastage and also tends to add direct financial value in to farmer’s account which can help them in further improving their production and marketing strategy.

In this way the technology can help directly the segment of society that lifts the real burden of food chain, making it possible for everyone to have a meal on their table. Precision agriculture can bear fruitful outputs if more and more farmers are trained well in to these technologies making them a part of the network.

Moreover, state can play a key role in to this by enabling tech startups to create new platforms within the system, ensuring tax breaks for new companies to invest in long term development of sector, enabling data available in regional languages for better understating and communication. State governments can arrange training for framer skill enhancement ensuring a more inclusive growth throughout the society.

Early research and application of precision farming approaches in various countries has shown valuable outputs. Replicating such feat in less developed countries is not an easy task, but a joint public-private effort can definitely lead to a progressive start for securing the future in such nations. This paradigm shift can ultimately ensure global food security for the near future. Just like the change in method of our growing food altered the path of humanity progress some 12,000 years ago, the decisions made today will shape the future of mankind.

Shahid Hafeez Khan, Tate & Lyle’s Application and Technical Support Manager for Pakistan and Iran.

Tate & Lyle’s ingredients solutions for healthier and enhanced products

In an exclusive interview with Insight Food Technology, Shahid Hafeez Khan, Tate & Lyle’s Application and Technical Support Manager for Pakistan and Iran speaks about the core competencies of Tate & Lyle and the latest ingredients solutions for healthier food and beverages.

Please talk to us about your role in the company and what are your key responsibilities?

I am primarily responsible for supporting our food and beverage manufacturer customers in Pakistan and Iran with new product development, value optimisation and other product enhancements. In my role as Tate & Lyle’s Application and Technical Support Manager, I serve as a bridge between customers and the

broader Tate & Lyle team by understanding consumer preferences and needs and turning them into actionable partnership opportunities. I use insights into local industry trends to create products tailored for my local markets, while supporting and advising food manufacturers on different aspects of their manufacturing operations especially recipe development, process adjustments and problem solving.

When did Tate & Lyle start its operation in Pakistan and what are the key areas of expertise?

Tate & Lyle is a world leader in ingredient solutions for healthier food and beverage and has been operating for more than 160 years. Over this time, it has expanded to support customers in more than 120 countries and in Pakistan, where we are known for this rich heritage, we have been supporting customers for more than two decades

via our extensive sales network. We provide ingredients and solution in key categories - dairy, bakery, beverage, soups, sauces, and dressings – which are highly relevant categories in Pakistan’s food culture.

Our ingredient solutions are highly relevant, too. Sugar reduction, an established global consumer trend, is a key consumer and industry trend here. Many of the customer briefs that I’ve worked on recently have a sugar reduction goal, such as developing a reduced sugar fruit flavoured beverage, and often we bring a combination of our ingredients to deliver a healthier product that doesn’t compromise on taste. Our toolkit of sugar reduction solutions, including low- and no-calorie sweeteners such as sucralose and sweetener blends, is extensive, and often it’s a mix or a ‘sugar reduction solution’ as we call it, that meets the customer brief and consumers’ taste expectations.

When you change an ingredient in a recipe to enhance its health credentials this will affect how all other ingredients interact in the ‘food matrix’, the complex interplay of nutrients in a food or beverage. It’s very rare that one ingredient is an exact match for another one.

Many of our ingredient solutions for healthier and enhanced products require the use of one of our texturants or functional systems, which can enable a seamless reformulation by replacing other ingredients while maintaining overall mouthfeel sensation. By doing this, the consumer can enjoy the same eating or drinking experience despite the formulation changes. At Tate & Lyle, our purpose is Transforming Lives through the Science of Food and through our product portfolio, global footprint and application know-how, we believe we can help our customers make a real

difference to some of society’s biggest public health challenges. It motivates us every day.

What are the key challenges the food industry has experienced in the last two years post‐pandemic?

It’s clearly a tough time for businesses and the consumers they serve. Every business in the sector will be grappling with some level of supply challenge or commodity or energy price increase.

Manufacturers are looking for more functionality in products such as new nutrition or health claims they can make, while also looking for cost optimisation opportunities to help them to manage these rising input costs. This is especially true in Pakistan.

We are more than suppliers to our customers, we are partners and we work closely to ensure they receive maximum value from our leading

ingredient portfolio and technical expertise. We help them to manage pressures to their business, in some cases to lower the overall price of inputs, and unlock new opportunities, launching successful products that deliver on key consumer trends.

How much Tate & Lyle is investing in R&D and which steps are taken to improve environment friendliness?

I work within the Turkey, Middle East and Africa (TMEA) regional team and late last year we announced a significant investment of US $2.2 million in a world class technical and commercial support centre, located in Dubai, to serve our regional customer base. We also have a pilot plant set up for dairy, ice cream, beverages, soups, sauces, dressing, bakery and snacks, where customers partner with us to trial formulation changes before introducing them into their production environments. Our analytical lab enables us to understand how

ingredients interact and behave within a formulation so we can ensure that our ingredient solutions will provide the desired results. More broadly, Tate & Lyle is committed to investing more capital in research and development, creating new products and becoming our customers innovation partner of choice.

Tate & Lyle is dedicated to providing comprehensive solutions to a demanding set of markets. Are there any exciting new products, especially for Pakistani and Irani market?

Sugar reduction is a major trend in this market, which is why the demand for our sweetener blends is growing, particularly from producers in the dairy and beverage categories. We offer a wide range of cost-effective sweetener blends alongside ingredients such as TASTEVA ® Stevia Sweetener, one of our premium stevia-based sweeteners, which has a clean, sweet taste and also enables higher levels of sugar reduction at acceptable cost-in-use.

Tate & Lyle’s premium OPTIMIZER STEVIA ® sweetener range is designed to replace sugar in a wide range of food and beverage products, helping food and beverage producers to make heathier products that their customers love, with no compromise on taste. This year we have heard about the acquisition of Quantum Hi‐Tech (Guangdong) Biological Co., Ltd. How much did this acquisition strengthen Tate & Lyle’s position as a leading global player in dietary fibre?

Journey of 38 years in Pakistan’s bakery sector Ambala Sweets and Bakers

Please tell us about the journey of Ambala Bakers from the beginning to a well-known export brand?

Ambala Bakers was established in 1985 by our father Mr. Lal Din in Karachi. Through the passage of time Ambala gained popularity by delivering

high-quality products and customer service. Ambala expanded its business with five branches located in different areas of Karachi. Continuing our fathers tradition, we always adopt latest technology and eager to equip the modern equipment required for the bakery business.

When did Ambala first exhibit the international exhibition and in how many shows you have exhibited in the last few years?

Ambala Bakers exhibited for the first time in Gulfood 2015 in Dubai and since then we are exhibiting regularly

34 Interview Insights Insight Food Technology
In an exclusive interview with Insight Food Technology, Mr. Jameel Ahmed, Director of Ambala Sweets and Bakers speaks about their journey of 38 years in the bakery sector from local retail business to the global export market. Mr. Jameel Ahmed, Director, Ambala Sweets and Bakers.

in Gulfood. We exhibit in single country exhibitions through TDAP like Sri Lanka, South Africa, Malaysia, and Kenya. We have participated in almost all the major exhibitions such as Gulfood, Anuga Foodtech, SIAL, and Foodex Saudi.

Please share your experience exhibiting in international exhibitions?

Exhibiting in international exhibitions is always a learning and eye-opening experience in which you meet and share ideas with people around the globe. We get a chance to meet professionals from the food industry who belongs to different countries, which gives us an idea about the latest innovations in the bakery sector and happenings in different regions. We are grateful to receive tremendous encouraging responses from international customers from the Middle East, Europe, Canada, and the USA.

In which regions Ambala has successfully exported products?

We are exporting our high-quality bakery and sweets products to almost all continents covering more than 20 countries. However, in the far east region, Korea has proved to be a more challenging and flourished market for

our product range. Korea is the most difficult market due to their strict customs and testing institutions for food items.

We would like to know about your product range and services you offer to the export customer?

We are one of the largest exporters of traditional bakery and sweets products, in which we have seven different varieties of Bakar Khani, eight different types of traditional cookies Nan Khatai, and Cake Rusk. In sweets, we offer tin pack sweets and assorted halwa boxes and in savory items, we have a wide range of Nimco products from Mixed Nimco to Dahi Bondi, and from Moong Dal to Crinkle Chips. Our preference has always been to provide our customers with the best quality together with exceptional services in terms of promotional material and documentation support.

What are your plans to compete in the international market. How do you see the current export market for the bakery sector?

We are planning to get more quality certifications, standards and set up an overseas production facility to serve the international customers. The current market situation is very tough for exporters from Pakistan due to the

increasing cost of raw material and less facilitation. We know that the bakery sector has a good potential and increasing exports will surely help our country to eard desperately needed foreign exchange. We want to become an integral part in benefiting our country.

Shelf life is always a sign of worry in food products. How much shelf life Ambala offers to the customer and tell us about the packaging standard?

You are right. Shelf life is a necessary and key factor in the export market for which we use natural preservatives recommended by international food and health authorities. We provide shelf life from 6 months to 1.5 years depending on the products. We use state-of-the-art and modern packaging material, and metalized bags for our bakery products to ensure quality, and freshness till the expiry date. Our motive has always been to provide good shelf life keeping in view the transit and warehousing time at the destination. Our Research and Development department continuously works to enhance product shelf life by using natural preservatives approved by international health standards.

SIAL Paris 2022 a must-attend event for the entire international agrifood industry

In this era marked by transitions, reinventions, and social responsibility on a global scale, now more than ever SIAL Paris seeks to serve as a space for the encounters and debates that shape and inspire the food ecosystem around the major transformations that are taking place in the agrifood industry. SIAL Paris is proud to be the one must-attend event for the entire international agrifood industry, and the sector’s first global event to be held inperson since 2019. SIAL Paris is simultaneously a reflection of the market and an opportunity to take stock of its transformation, a transformation that has only been accelerated by the crises and tensions that have rocked every link in the supply chain.

Retaining the same theme launched in 2020 – Own the change –the exhibition is once again shining the spotlight on change and evolution. This year’s exhibition will analyze the need for a transition in the agrifood sector on a global scale; changing consumer habits; strategies to deliver agriculture and transformations that are kinder to wildlife and the environment; and the

growth of startups who are inventing new ways of doing business.

“In 2022, SIAL Paris is encouraging the Food community to seize the reins of change and to work together to imagine the solutions of the future, to benefit both the industry and consumers. We are delighted that the 3 Michelin-starred chef Mauro Colagreco, who goes to great lengths to do his bit in the way he works every day, has agreed to be the sponsor of this year’s event”, says Audrey Ashworth.

“SIAL is back, and I am delighted to be the patron. Each time we eat, we decide what kind of world we want to live in. The international vision of food that SIAL offers, and its commitment to improve consumption and production modes to make food better for people and the planet, are very important to me: I take them to heart in my own daily business. The “Own the change” theme of this edition of the trade fair resonates with me. The need for transformation is becoming inevitable,

36 SIAL Paris Insights Insight Food Technology

With #Own The Change, SIAL Paris 2022 is about much more than product innovation. We will always need to eat, which is why agriculture and the agrifood industry both represent sectors of the future. However, major changes are afoot in these growth industries, and immense challenges lie ahead. Achieving food security demands innovation. And this innovation must take the new paradigms into account: producing more while polluting less, exploring new supply sources, and moving towards greater transparency… says, Nicolas Trentesaux

considering the challenges we now face. Chefs and restaurants have an essential role to play in this change. The world has already changed... It is up to us to catch up.” says, MAURO COLAGRECO, Chef at Le Mirazur restaurant and patron of SIAL Paris 2022.

#OWN THE CHANGE

“Own the change:” taking on the challenge of changing today for a better world tomorrow. This is, above all, a call to join forces in employing better practices. The determination to support change and guide it in the

right direction. A time for the community to gather to design the food of tomorrow.

Federatingthe whole world’s food community

And so for SIAL, a source of inspiration for the entire worldwide food community, it is essential to showcase these expectations and initiatives in order federate the food industry. All its participants, from farmers to distributors to restaurant professionals, may actively take part in the food transition.

The company plans to display its full expertise as a producer and packager of hard and semi-hard cheeses for industry, food service and retail channels as well as a comprehensive range of raw materials, cuts and packs that meet the varying demands of customers. Its strength lies in its consultant approach. It looks into specific needs and comes up with tailor-made solutions. The company, which is always on the lookout for the latest food trends and changing consumer patterns, also offers vegetarian cheeses, like its Spinoro and Pastamore.

A major achievement for the company has been the control over the Parmigiano Reggiano DOP supply chain: 180 wheels are produced each day at its mountain cheese factories located in Cigarello and Canossa, right in the heart of the Reggio Emilia Apennines, and left to mature for 12, 24, 30, 36 and 40 months. In addition to conventional Parmigiano Reggiano, DalterFood Group also offers various other types.

One is the Organic Mountain Product (Prodotto di Montagna), which

uses 100% milk from mountain cows on a 60% mountain fodder diet, is produced in a mountain cheese factory, and is left to mature for 12 months. And in 2020, the company added its Parmigiano Reggiano “only from Italian Pezzata Rossa Cows” (Solo di Pezzata Rossa Italiana), a market exclusive with Organic and Mountain Product certification made with the milk of a single breed of cattle, the Italian Pezzata Rossa, bred by only one farm, the Azienda Agricola Le Boccede.

Sustainability is one of the cornerstones of the company, which recently published its first Sustainability Report. The document describes the company’s huge commitment in this sphere, which embraces every area of governance. “We are proud to come to SIAL 2022 with the results of the remarkable work we did, shared by every rank of the company,” said Andrea Guidi, General Manager of DalterFood Group. “This is a commitment to keep working hard to make wholesome products for our customers and applying ourselves for the collectivity, conscious of the fact that quality and every facet of sustainability go together.”
