"True life is lived when tiny changes occur." ~ Tolstoy
[ MIND THOUGHTS ] Guess whose back! It’s about that time of year again ‐‐ the first day of class has returned. In this issue we have a great interview with Bobbito Garcia and if you don’t know who he is then find out! We have a great deal of events planned for this year. They include getting a renowned artist on campus; several movie screenings and other events. We are fielding numerous fundraising ideas to accomplish these goals. The interest in FOKUS is growing and it’s good to see this happening. The more people who enter the club and are active will only bring greater results than before. Look for the logo around campus and constant improvements. I look forward to hearing from everyone. ~ Prime
These are questions many people have asked in response to the loud yellow bands that have increasingly become an accessory for everyone’s style this summer. Fashion statement? Maybe, but the craze is simply a proud declaration of support; both from the American and worldwide public, for cancer, its research, and most importantly, it’s SURVIVORS. Cyclist Lance Armstrong made noise again this summer not only with his 6th straight win in the Tour de France, but also with the release of the cancer tribute, yellow “LIVESTRONG” wristband, compliments of his foundation; the Lance Armstrong Foundation [LAF].
Live Strong is an educational program within LAF, encouraging all members of the cancer survivor community [relative, friend, caregiver, healthcare provider, supporters, or MASS MEETING COMING SOON! survivors themselves] to ‘live strong’ through and beyond the physical, emotional, and BE ON THE LOOK OUT FOR FLYERS & EMAILS FOR THE DATE ‐‐ ALL STUDENTS practical challenges of their survivorship. According to the official website, “The Lance ARE WELCOMED TO JOIN!!! Armstrong Foundation (LAF) believes that knowledge is power and attitude is everything. From the moment your survivorship begins on the day of diagnosis, [they] provide the [ LIFESTYLE ] information and tools you need to live strong.” So what is the focus of the wristband campaign? LAF’s mission is to raise 5 million dollars to fund the continued efforts towards cancer research. “Yellow wakes me up in the morning. Yellow gets me on the bike every day. Yellow has taught me the true meaning of sacrifice. Yellow makes me suffer. Yellow is the reason I’m here.”
When asked how they got their bands around their wrists, peers of mine explained that with a donation of only 1 dollar to Lance’s foundation, they were both able to support this selfless cause as well as promote the need for cancer awareness and action.

On eBay five LIVESTRONG wristbands can go for up to $26.01 and a Family Pak of three sells for $13.00; while the majority of wristbands are selling for $1.01, only one cent more than the regular donation. SURVIVOR driven motives are characteristic of many who have contributed to LAF’s cause. However, there are others, such as sellers who may state that he has Stage IIIB non‐small cell lung cancer, supporting LAF entirely out of good faith, who may be in it solely for a profit. For further information about either LIVESTRONG wristbands or the survivor mission at large, please logon to the Lance Armstrong Foundation website [www.laf.org]. Individual bands are also available online at both niketown.com and all NikeTown stores and your local bike shop. [ BREAKING BREAD ]
Volume I Issue 2 and Source Magazine. Around 1990 I wrote the “Confessions of a Sneaker Addict” article that singly lead to the book “Where’d You Get Those,” which came out on Testify Books in 2003. I wrote the Vibe column, Bobbito Soundcheck for about 10 years and found a great joy in writing about basketball. So Sean Couch, Jessie Washington, Justin Leonard and I all put together a magazine called Bounce from the Playground. It strictly focuses on what goes on in the schoolyard and street. I have a whole basketball performance career. I am a member of Project Playground Basketball. We have performed during NBA halftime shows, college half time shows, in Taiwan and in Puerto Rico. We are working on a Project Playground Basketball play at El Flamingo Theater. I play basketball on a daily basis and get a lot of fulfillment out of it. I have played pro in Puerto Rico, and many tournaments, I also coached at the college and high school level and in playground tournaments. I have acted, written poetry, rhymed, and both a record label and store. There are a lot of opportunities in NYC and the opportunities are endless. It is up to us to discover those boundaries and if there aren’t any, I will continue to push myself. F: How do you feel about Puerto Rico defeating USA?
The next following pages recount out interview with the great Bobbito Garcia. Take the time to read and think because it can get deep. FOKUS: Introduce yourself. Bobbito: Bobbito Garcia aka DJ Cucumber Slice. I am a number of things all based out of New York City, my home for life. I am most known as a DJ. I’ve been DJing in clubs for about 10yrs, I did radio for about 12yrs. I was on Hot 97 for 3 years with DJ Stretch Armstrong and Lord Sear. I have put together a number of compilations, most notably the Wonder of Stevie with DJ Spinna on Harmless Records. I wrote for Vibe, Slam
B: Not surprised of it. I am proud of us winning that game and I am proud of Puerto Rico winning any game. I played in Puerto Rico and have known a lot of New Yorkers who have gone down there to play; there are NBA coaches, Phil Jackson, Bernie Bickerstaff, who have gone down there. Puerto Rico’s pro league is older than the NBA. Puerto Rico lost to US by 1 point in 1976 Olympics and a lot of people don’t remember because they are too young and that was a shining moment for Puerto Rico and I think it was going to happen eventually if it was Puerto Rico, it would have been Lithuania or whoever. F: What are you favorite sneakers? B: Favorite sneakers are whatever I picked out for the day. The first line of my book is “I am a refined sneaker addict.” And I really mean that, I never wrote the book with the mind

Fighting Obstacles Knowing Ultimate Success that I wanted people to go out and over consume and be fanatic about luxury items. I always been stuck on sneakers because I am first and foremost a ball player and me wearing sneakers at all other points of the day and wanting clean nice sneakers is simply because I love wearing sneakers. When I play ball and when you see me DJing, I’m wearing basketball kicks but I also have on ball shorts and people always laugh at me because I will be in the club with shorts on in the middle of the winter.
Volume I Issue 2 colorful; their school opportunity may be bleak; their career opportunity may be slim; and so amongst all those things, a quick fix is an $80 pair of sneakers or in worst cases a $10 purchase of drugs. We all look for quick fixes ‐‐ all of us ‐‐ even the happiest people look for quick fixes – I’m having a shitty day…I want to have sex or I had a shitty week…let’s go out and see a movie. These are all things that all of us can identify with. It only becomes problematic when the things that we are looking to give us that rush are harmful to us, our bodies, our environment, or the people manufacturing them. If you take every piece of clothing that you wear it is probably manufactured somewhere in the world that is a result of exploited labor, and every single sneaker brand, a lot of people point finger at Nike, but ever single sneaker brand, whether manufactured in U.S or not, uses materials that are manufactured in countries that have probably less than great wages for their workers. It is sort of impossible to avoid.
When I go to sleep I have on ball shorts and when I work in my house I wear tournaments shirts. That’s just what I feel most comfortable in, that’s what I spent the majority of my life dressed in and I have been on the court more than any other environment or social setting in my life, so that’s my home. So a lot of people that wear sneakers and don’t even play ball or aren’t athletes, I think its great because sneakers are comfortable and there is a lot of money put into research and design and they are well designed but I don’t know, I wouldn’t have 300 shoes in my apt and if I didn’t play ball, I wouldn’t have 20prs of What is possible to avoid though is wearing sneaks either. jewelry that is a frivolous item. It’s not wrong because people like to wear jewelry, but when FOKUS: You spoke of over consumption a little it comes to jewelry, to me sneakers you need while ago. The U.S. promotes us to have low self‐esteem and promotes us to be disconnected with the rest of the world. If people of color globally united and had a sense of common self; how vital will that be to improvement. I hate it when I go into a store and I see a little Latin kid making fun of the Arab Muslim behind the counter. What the fuck is your problem? Lebanese and Syrian people migrated to Puerto Rico and Cuba; the Moors invaded Spain; Spain invaded our islands; there is a lot of commonality that people have no clue about, if we were to realize that commonality then we would be like oh shit, let me go into the store and say Salam or Shukran or whatever…that’s a step towards not fuck you, but actually peace. FOKUS: Describe the process you went through from getting Where'd You Get Those out of your mind to being available to the public in the book? Bobbito: “Where’d You Get Those?” started about 30 years ago when I first started noticing sneakers and if you read the book it is very personal to a lot of accounts of my child hood and specifically when I wrote the article for the source, "Confessions of a Sneaker Addict"; my publisher Dana Albarella from Testify Books read the article. Back then I had an independent store called Bobbitt’s Footwork. She came in there and bought some sneakers and it was just being in the right place at the right time. She approached me to write a sneaker book and I was like I can’t just write a book about sneakers because the topic is too broad. So I was like what do I know? I know New York City and I know basketball and I know hip‐hop. So I didn’t write about the sneaker industry or the technology behind them, it is about people. It’s about New Yorkers who grew up feenin’ to play ball and hear hip‐hop when it was impossible to find at every hour and when it was totally inaccessible, it’s those moments that really make the book special to me.
Volume I Issue 2 B: My brother was and still is the man. He wears shoes and hats that you can’t find. That’s New York…that’s quintessentially New York ‐ the idea to be unique and progressive. My brother didn’t want to just wear a hat…he wanted to wear a hat that was handcrafted in Italy that no one else had. That’s the best of New York to me. F: Could you touch on the uniqueness? Focusing on many of the sneaker brands that are bringing back their classics, how important is it to be the individual? B: That’s up to each and every body. I think it is ok for people to wear what everyone else wears, but I think the premise for that to be success is for there always to be a small pocket of people who want to be different. I’m one of those people who like being different. But if every single individual wanted to be different then there would be no way to be different because the norm would be to be different, I can preach that only but so much. I love to paint my sneakers. That started 25 years ago and my brother did that before me. Now you can go to the store and buy hand painted sneakers, which means now I can't customize my sneakers because everybody’s doing it, so there has got to be a point. F: What would you say is the importance of college? B: The importance is not college. The importance is to educate and empower yourself. Whether it happens on the street, in your home or in the school environment; it doesn’t really matter, the important thing is for it to happen in all environments. Go to school, sure, learn but don’t let that be the only place where you’re hungry for knowledge. In the U.S., unfortunately, education doesn’t promise us anything except self‐empowerment and feeling better about you. So that’s why I went to school, I went to a liberal arts school, Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. I didn’t go there for a trade I went there because I wanted to learn how to learn and that’s helped me do [what I do] and have a new career every month it seems.
F: You mentioned your brother in the book.

When all else fails… cheat. Now that’s not what we do in reality but go rent or buy Slackers and you can experience it. [ UNDER THE NEEDLE ]
Al Green, Otis Redding, Sam Cooke and others were the definition of soul music. This past decade we have seen many neo‐ soul artists try to claim their title. Enter Ricky Fante. Rewind is a successful attempt at capturing the soul of the ‘60s. His scratchy voice helps him standout and the songs on Rewind give him the credit to warrant a listen. His 12 tracks covers more than one may expect due to the current albums of our times. While his gritty voice may turn some away initially, you have to give things a chance. Do a search and you should be able to hear a sample of his music, go pick up a copy of this cd, or borrow a copy of it from a friend. Just go cop this disc. ~Prime

Jay & Whizz: The Arrival 10 /20
15 /20 Twenty‐two tracks. That is the first sign that the And Now For Something Completely Different is not amongst the common releases. Emir Lye delivers an album that has some immediate stand out tracks. This is a good album that you should pick up. Overall it comes strong but there are areas where he gets caught up in drug ballads which get tired quickly. Emir attempts to differentiate himself and has the potential to but some of his delivery is the same. “Bragging Writes,” “Judas Piece” and “My Grandmother” are some of the stand out tracks on this album. Go check out www.illiancerecords.com for more! ~Prime
Jay and Whizz are repping The D and they are proud of it. They are on the Illiance Records roster. The Arrival features a decent production job but the lyrics leave room for more improvement. The duo does not arrive much later than wanted. The first couple of tracks can lose many listeners but the later tracks are a great improvement. You see the beat production stepping up and their delivery improves. “Here We Go,” “Stick‐N‐Move,” and “John Doe” are the top tracks in my opinion. You should check it out because it has a lot of potential that isn’t found when you first listen to this album. ~Prime

[ BRAIN FOOD ] Duo Live: Free Lunch
Alan Moore Watchmen 15 /20
20 /20 Few things ever earn a solid spot in my music player. Free Lunch has now joined that short list. I picked up this album from the crew over on Broadway and Bleeker back in New York and I am still very satisfied with it. The production by Sid V is outstanding for what will probably get an “underground” stamp by the masses. Which tracks standout? All of them including the hidden track but two of my favorites are “What They Want” part one and two. These two tracks show that Fre is a prolific lyricist. Fre and Sid V combine to form Duo Live and that name could not be more fitting because they are hot and deserve everybody’s attention. Each member of the Dips gets some run on this album plus other artists get some rhyme time. “On The Way Up,” “Jamaican Joint,” “Crunk Muzik” and “Let’s Ride” are my top tracks. Step out from under the hate and give this disc its deserved chance. ~Prime

Comic art receives very little respect in this country – mainly because people associate comics with children. But if you have never read a graphic novel, you don't realize what you are missing. Despite the stigma, the majority of graphic novels are written for adults and deal with intense issues. In the interest of passing on a work that really meant a lot to me, and hopefully turning some people on to graphic novels, I recommend reading Watchmen. (DC comics – words: Alan Moore, Art: Dave Gibbons. If you go into a comic store they'll know it because it is mad famous.) Watchmen is a complete story – no more comics to buy, with a beginning and an ending. It won a number of awards, and is known for giving credibility to graphic novels as a genre. It is about superheroes, but like any great work of art, it is directly dealing with the human condition. The work follows one story from many different angles and digs deep into the emotions and pasts of its characters. It is set against the backdrop of the cold war in an alternate world populated with superheroes. In this world, there is a super‐being who becomes the centerpiece of the US military's defense against the USSR. For a number of reasons, this super‐being becomes disenchanted with humanity and its relevance to the universe as a whole and abandons Earth. Directly after this, Russia invades Afghanistan (in this world in 1985 as opposed to in our real world in 1980). The reader follows these events from many points of view and watches as a group of costumed humans with no powers try to make sense of what looks like a conspiracy.
