INSIGHT magazine: Movement

By Joel L. Daniels

I thought maybe I needed to do drugs, New drugs that would Lift the edge off/of my shoulders Brain like compost Sifting through the rubbish in My cells, making the most out of Empty refrigerators and cabinets With the cockroaches still in them I was looking for an opening A place to jettison the thoughts Weighted with the cracks growing In my playground. I played on a swing once And saw what was left of a vile someone Removed the contents from and placed in a glass pipe And smoked until their lungs felt like Helium filled red balloons We moved after we found the condom, unwrapped and used, In front of our door in the 4th grade, following The falling of my father down stairs, started by a single mother Who saw enough and but wanted more. I would move, too. To settings with sun scratching my back to death, on roofs where Shingles dropped; to a duplex near a golf course With a view of a gas station and a defunct Diddy restaurant, And back to the backdrop of next door building Gang violence bleeding the walls This is a good time to leave, they will Tell you, because White people are coming back In canoes and biker shorts and hipster chino Fatigue army pants and denim leggings With the holes in the pant legs they made on an Ivy league campus somewhere, with those brochures Filled with 3/4 black persons hired by Backstage To fill quotas, real and imagined, for the benefit Of affirmative tractions, because it is attractive to Move where the Black people used to be. Funny.

Joel L. Daniels is a poet, emcee and actor, born and raised in the Bronx. His work has been featured in the Columbia Journal, BBC Radio, RCRD LBL, URB, He’s spoken and performed at The Apollo, Joe’s Pub, Rockwood Music Hall, Columbia University. mrmag.bandcamp.com www.fokus.org |

Orange 10

by Charlotte Corini

This series of watercolors are about reinvestigate color. I am intrigued by the difference of Newtons scientific approach to color analysis and Goethe’s concept of color is the minds perception. For me these all culminated in Joseph Albers color theories of the fifties were color was not a standalone object but was a reflection of its surroundings. I recently decide to follow Joseph Albers’ workbook. As I started I reacted to the structure of the exercise. Instead I decided to investigation each color and capture the energy and movement of the color. I started with yellow, moved on to orange. and will continue through red, green, blue, indigo and violet. These pieces capture the energy and movement. Charlotte Corini is a working artist based in Brooklyn, New York. She received an MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art Rinehart School of Sculpture. Corini has been and Artist-In-Residence at the Ragdale Foundation, and the Poach Cove Foundation. www.charlottecorini.com 12 | www.fokus.org

Bound #2 by s.e.a.

The movement of the human body, and dancers in particular, have always facinated me. Power, strength, flexibility, grace, fragility and emotion all in one vessal. This piece from the evolving Bound series is primarily about pushing self-inflicted boundaries and exploring the idea of restraint, but in a more literal sense, is also about restraining movement. A duality which creates a physical tension with the body and the restraint(in this case the dancer’s own hair). 14 | www.fokus.org

Movement

by Scotty Cottrell

Life in Hawaii moves a little different than anywhere else in the country. Most who seek these beautiful islands on vacation are looking to escape the hustle and bustle of their daily lives to drink Mai Tais on the beach and slow down life for a week. Well, when wave season hits for locals the tranquility of summertime quickly transforms into a high pace environment where everyone is scrambling to find the best waves at the best breaks and sometimes even a minutes hesitation can mean the difference between catching the wave of a lifetime versus hearing about someone else catching it. The grace, power, beauty and danger in the movements of these giant waves and those who catch them still represent one of the most beautiful and inspiring things I’ve ever seen and experienced. 16 | www.fokus.org

Galactic Goddess by Henry Burgos

The elements of the painting consist of a woman in outer space turning into statue. She is laying on blue and green drapery representing the earth. Her right foot is reaching out and stepping on grey drapery that is suppose to represent the moon. In the distance there is another planet covered in red drapery representing Mars, also where her right arm has detached but partially reached mars. As a whole, it represents how man has spent endless amounts of money and resources on voyages such as landing on the moon and reaching Mars, but have not used nor is concerned in using those resources to help the issues we face here on earth such as hunger, poverty, and preserving nature. That is why she is turning to stone, she views herself as godly taking these voyages but it’s only so long before it gets the best of her and begins to destroy her. 30 | www.fokus.org

An Old letter from a New Woman written in her own brain

INSIGHT magazine: Movement

By Hayley Bauske

What are you gonna do? Existential milieu will change you over time What was once understood eats it’s way into the bellies of your women friend’s fertile souls Your pain won’t fit in their bodies soon You feel your own ovaries swollen with held breath like a momma that wants grandchildren on her only son’s behalf Their mid-sections are begging them to forget their connection with you At 22 and 11 months there’s no dissatisfaction you should even feel You’re buying black and milds with 2-dollar bills, holding on to the change with fight or flight instincts I bet if you eve did dropped that quarter, it wouldn’t make it past your waist I sure the fuck hope those episodes of Naruto you watched this morning thawed out Lay down, restless darkness with imaginative qualities: bloated from the lentils you ate for dinner because you ain’t go to work for a week and you got 200% of nothing with some change still stuck in your knuckles ..........here are the 10 periods that shoulda been had in this squandering hiatus frm: a new Woman

Wood. Fire. Earth. Metal. Water. These five elements were the only foundations of our planet Earth. Until evolution gave birth to the human race adding that final element we call mankind. As nature and man became one under the life giving rays of the sun and lunar glow of the moon. The two grew to embrace each other, and the way their interactions continue to grow will forever leave an impression on our Mother Earth. My vision explores the living and their inorganic surroundings greatly affect the chemistry and conditions of the Earth’s surface.

Courage Under Fire

INSIGHT magazine: Movement

by Jay GlowSociety

Abstract self portrait inspired by change and water, particularly how it moves. Our body is mainly water yet we are afraid of change. Our tears lay the groundwork for change. Look into the mirror of past reflections, pain and misery to press forward to open doors of the unknown with COURAGE! Inspired by mirror, movement, pain, strength, shine, courage, and self-reflection.

ANIMAL

by Hanna Satterlee. Photos by David Neufield

Animal is a choreographic exploration of instinctual response, spatial awareness, pack behavior, and the pre-verbal creature that inhabits the human body. The choreography has been developed over two years through a series of “draft” performances in varied indoor and outdoor environments, followed by public dialog, Authentic Movement exercises, and research into the physiology of non-human bodies. The work has been presented outdoors in the snow, the summer rain, and on leaf-filled ground in the woods. The work has also been shared on stages and in studios, with varying casts and guest performers. The creative process has experimented with adjusting sound, temperature, image and place to vary the feeling of the movement from the inside experience of both performer as well as audience member. These photos show one of our first outdoor rehearsal experiments in the falling snow, February 2014, Plainfield Vermont. This creative process will soon culminate in an interdisciplinary performance that places Hanna Satterlee’s choreography within a series of immersive sound compositions, digitally reconstituted from the raw utterances of field recordings and handmade instruments by sound artists Sean Clute and Otto Muller, and in dialog with the environmental video work of Lukas Huffman.

Hanna Satterlee holds a BA from Goucher College and is currently in the MFA-IA program at Goddard College. She is the director of ANIMAL, an interdisciplinary performance project. hannasatt.wordpress.com 44 | www.fokus.org

America by Yvette

It is through this painting proudly titled, “AMERICA” one will see what they will about America. For me, I see, not only America’s harsh and regrettable past, but I too see growth, HOPE and “THE AMERICAN DREAM.” coming to life! This particular piece tells the story of moving forward towards a better America and despite some setbacks throughout history; we learn from our mistakes and we are taking steps to not take just as many backwards! One can see where we started and where we are now. It just goes to show that we are capable of being better when and if we want to!

This particular piece shows how “WE” take steps everyday to be a better America! Yes, we will at times have setbacks, but what country doesn’t? Yet, despite it all, we are making a “MOVEMENT” to live up to the standards we are capable of achieving as a people!” www.fokus.org |
