Penumbra presents Alice Childress’
Wine In The Wilderness WINE IN THE WILDERNESS Directed by Lou Bellamy One Act, Drama 3 men, 2 women, off-stage voice Total Cast: 5 ISBN-13: 978-0-8222-4395-3 First produced as part of a special experimental series of Black drama, the compelling and highly imaginative play Wine In The Wilderness by Alice Childress speaks eloquently of the Black experience in America. Acclaimed writer Alice Childress delivers a frank
portrait of Black women’s identity, seen from outside and inside. As an uprising rocks his Harlem neighborhood, artist Bill Jameson is focused on finishing his latest work: paintings representing three types of Black womanhood. But the arrival of an unexpected muse challenges his artistic vision and reveals his shallow assumptions. With humor and heart, Childress takes on class, patriarchy, and the artist’s role within the community. This is the playwright at her most
revolutionary and essential. As described in the Boston Herald Traveler: “The drama was woven around a young girl, played by Abbey Lincoln, befriended by an artist looking for a model of a grassroots woman, ignorant and unattractive, for his triptych. It opens amidst Negro riots that have burned the girl out of her apartment and Abbey gets off a few cracks that hit home when the artist and his friends haul out the Afro-American bit by crying, ‘The Afro-Americans
burnt down my home. They holler ‘Whitey’ but who did they burn down—me!’ There were many poignant moments as the two were magnetically drawn together and pushed apart. Abbey’s fear of falling in love with the artist, his desire to hold her there only long enough to paint her for his triptych, her disillusionment when she finds out, from Old Timer, one of the neighborhood’s characters, that he wants a woman who’s ugly and ignorant for his model. What Wine In The Wilderness captured
was the turmoil Blacks feel, the pretenses they assume—like wearing straight-haired wigs— the looting of their own people in a riot—something Old Timer rationalized in a humorous manner.” But something which, like the other deeply felt revelations in the play, goes directly and surely to the heart of the racial dilemma. Wine In The Wilderness at Penumbra Theatre, 270 N. Kent Street, St. Paul, MN, runs from February 20 thru March 17, 2024.

Supreme Court Justice Margaret Chutich announces retirement By Trisha Ahmed Associated Press/Report for America
The Unchecked Path: Trump’s victory in Iowa sparks concerns over accountability By Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire Senior National Correspondent @StacyBrownMedia A good parent usually chastises and punishes their child when they’ve egregiously misbehaved. Jaywalkers get tickets, and murderers have received the death penalty. Generally, no one goes unpunished for breaking the law. Not in the United States. Not unless you are of a particular social and financial status, and the crime, for the most part, isn’t much more than white collar. But that’s not the case with Donald J. Trump. Undoubtedly, Trump is the kid who has never been chastised or punished. And, as a grownup, and certainly since his false election claim in 2020 and his
egging on a deadly riot at the U.S. Capitol, the twice-impeached and four-times indicted former president hasn’t seen a scintilla of punishment. One could argue that America, or his parents, have rewarded his unprecedented bad behavior. Just one day before his second sexual assault civil trial was to begin, Trump cruised to a landslide victory in the Iowa caucuses, solidifying his front-runner status for the Republican presidential nomination. As several outlets reported, losing one-term presidents rarely mount subsequent successful primary campaigns, much less pull off landslides that demonstrate utter dominance of their party. Trump transformed the GOP in 2016. By claiming 50% of the vote in the biggest win in caucus history,
putting him on course for his third consecutive nomination, Trump showed that the current GOP is now entirely his party. President Joe Biden beat Trump in the 2020 general election, 81 million popular votes to 75 million. And while both numbers were stunning, Trump’s was more telling, as it demonstrated that 75 million could vote for a man who single-handedly destroyed American Democracy, who championed white supremacy, caged babies, mocked the disabled, and called cowards American troops whom the enemy captured. Not all Trump followers are racist, but there’s no doubt that you must be a racist to be a Trump follower. Biden’s victory over Trump came in part because his slogan, his message, “saving the soul of America,” resonat-
ed. It was the first time since President Obama’s “Yes We Can” that Dems had a message folks could understand and get behind. Mainly a message that the ultimate swing voters, African Americans, could embrace. During the current campaign, when Biden says there’s a need to “save Democracy,” the message falls flat particularly to African Americans who have come to a reckoning that Democracy today, like the Confederacy of decades ago, doesn’t work for Black people. So, what are they saving? A system that fosters outright racism from politicians, the emphatic truth that Black Lives really don’t matter, and more than 75 million, including a few who were born Black (Ben Carson, Clarence

Republicans, are you the American Version of the worst of the Taliban? By Erline Belton, Executive Coach and Author I woke up the other morning with this thought laying heavy on my mind and my heart. Now with Donald Trump’s success in the Iowa Caucus (https://apple.news/ A5N4xidHtRXauEgyoYLtb0A & https://www.nytimes. com/live/2024/01/15/us/ iowa-caucus-electionnews?smid=nytcore-ios-sha re&referringSource=articleS hare ), my question becomes even more urgent and timely. Has the Republican party through its actions, policies, and silence, become the American version of the worst of the Taliban? Have you deliberately adopted policies to suppress democracy, and the American People who do not think and believe as you do. Those of you who remain silent are complicit in this suppression. 2024 election season in full force Hobb servation Point

The 2024 election season kicked off in full force last night up in Iowa, where the quadrennial caucuses yielded no surprise in the #1 slot for the Republican Party as Donald Trump, the once and “wannabe” President of the United States, dominated the field by earning 51 percent of the vote. In the battle for the crucial second slot, Florida Governor Ronald Desantis narrowly clipped former South Carolina Governor (and U.N. Ambassador) Nimarata “Nikki” Haley with 21.2 percent of the vote as compared to Haley’s 19.1 percent. Billionaire Vivek Ramaswamy, the child of immigrants who spent a good part of his fortune and time over the past six months trying to convince Iowa voters that he is the best candidate to
lead the Republican Party, finished in fourth place after earning 7.7 percent of the vote; Ramaswamy profusely thanked his supporters before dropping out of the race and endorsing Donald Trump late yesterday evening. The question now becomes, who drops out next? The proverbial “elephant in the room” (pun intended) is that once Mr. Trump declared his candidacy back in 2022, there was an air of inevitability at play that he and President Joe Biden would square off in a 2024 general election rematch due to the vise grip hold that he has on the hearts and minds of the majority of his fellow Republicans. Last, while Ms. Haley finished third, hers was actually a solid showing when realizing that she spent far less time barnstorming in Iowa as compared to Trump and Desantis; Haley has spent quite a bit of time up in New Hampshire, and it will be interesting to see whether she can actually finish in first place in the more moderate

Business Nearly 16 million total meals served monthly to students, saving families thousands
Over 1 million more lunches served monthly by Universal Free School Meals Governor Tim Walz and Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan last week announced that over 1 million more lunches have been served monthly by the free school meals program this year, saving families thousands of dollars. In the first month of the program, 1.1 million more breakfasts and 1.1 million more lunches were served to students than the same period in 2022. Governor Walz and Lieutenant Governor Flanagan made the announcement at Edgerton Elementary in Maplewood. “We’re serving free, healthy meals to more students than ever before. That’s time and money saved on packing lunches, and it’s more kids who are getting the fuel they need to succeed in and out of the classroom,” said Governor Walz. “Feeding our children is one of the best investments we can make for our students’ future, and we’re saving families
thousands of dollars a year in the process.” “As a kid who relied on free and reducedprice lunch at school, I knew universal school meals would be life changing for millions of Minnesotans,” said Lieutenant Governor Flanagan. “With free school meals, we’re feeding more students than ever, ensuring they have healthy meals which allow them to learn, grow, and thrive each day at school.” According to the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE), the number of total meals served increased from 13.7 million to 15.9 million from September 2022 to September 2023. The number of breakfasts served increased by 31% from September 2022 to September 2023, and the number of lunches served increased by 11%. The Free School Meals program, passed in the
2023 legislative session, is a state-funded program that provides reimbursement to schools for meals served to students who do not qualify for free or reduced-price meals, so all students receive meals at no cost. School districts, charter schools, nonpublic schools, and other participants approved for the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program may participate in the Free School Meals program. “Traveling across the state, I’ve seen firsthand the profound impact of free school meals for all,” says Commissioner Willie Jett. “Hunger impedes concentration and emotional regulation. Now, our students can focus on learning and building healthy relationships. Their attention is on class work.” Schools have up to 60 days to report their monthly meal counts for reimbursement.

Amazon will invest in Diamond Sports as part of a bankruptcy restructuring agreement By Joe Reedy AP Sports Writer Amazon will partner with Diamond Sports as part of a restructuring agreement as the largest owner of regional sports networks looks to emerge from bankruptcy. Diamond owns 18 networks under the Bally Sports banner. Those networks have the rights to 37 professional teams — 11 baseball, 15 NBA and 11 NHL. Diamond Sports has been in Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings in the Southern District of Texas since it filed for protection last March. The company said in a late 2021 financial filing that it had debt of $8.67 billion. The terms of the agreement were announced by Diamond Sports on Wednesday morning and then presented before Judge Christopher Lopez at an afternoon hearing in Houston. “There’s lots to digest, especially when you consider where things were the fourth quarter of last year,” Lopez said at the end of the hearing. “It is certainly a very interesting

development to say the least. The thought the company is moving in this direction is a positive development.” Diamond Sports had been negotiating deals with all of the leagues, which would have been completed by the end of the coming baseball season. The NBA and NHL both said they have received the documents and were reviewing them before discussing next steps with Diamond. Major League Baseball was more pointed in its evaluation. “There is a lot to digest. It is unable to be digested because it hasn’t been purchased, cooked or served. When we get to that point, we will look at it and figure out whether it is able to be digested,” MLB lawyer James Bromley said during the hearing. “We will refrain from adding congratulations until such time that something is actually delivered.” Amazon had no immediate comment. The agreement remains subject to approval by the bankruptcy court.
The agreement with Diamond Sports’ largest creditors allows it to emerge from bankruptcy and continue operations and prevents a total collapse of the regional sports network system where the NBA, NHL and MLB would have to step in to take over production and distribution of most of their teams. Last season, MLB had to take over production and distribution of the San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks games after Diamond let rights payments to the Padres lapse and was unable to agree to an amended deal with the Diamondbacks. Under the terms of the restructuring agreement, Amazon will make a minority investment in Diamond — expected to be initially $115 million — and enter into a commercial arrangement to provide access to Diamond’s content via Prime Video. Customers will be able to access their local team’s content on Prime Video channels where Diamond has rights. Pricing and availability
will be announced at a later date, but it is unlikely that this content would be available as benefit included for current Prime subscribers. Regional sports content will also remain available on cable and satellite providers. Amazon Prime already carries some New York Yankees and Brooklyn Nets games produced by the YES Network. Due to the complexity of this bankruptcy case, though, it could take a while before games become available on Prime Video. Diamond also has an agreement in principle with Sinclair Broadcast Group to settle pending litigation between the companies. Sinclair bought the regional sports networks from The Walt Disney Co. for nearly $10 billion in 2019. Disney was required by the Department of Justice to sell the networks for its acquisition of 21st Century Fox’s film and television assets to be approved. Even before Sinclair bought the regional networks,

the business was in a downturn due to cord-cutting and declines in advertising revenue after entering into exorbitant longterm deals with some teams. Under an agreement with creditors last year, Diamond Sports Group became a separate company from Sinclair. As part of the settlement, Sinclair will pay Diamond $495 million and provide ongoing services to support Diamond’s reorganization. The proceeds from the settlement also will pay off some creditors. “We are thrilled to have reached a comprehensive restructuring agreement that provides a detailed framework for a reorganization plan and substantial new financing that will enable Diamond to operate and thrive beyond 2024,” Diamond Sports CEO David Preschlack said in a statement. “We are grateful for the support from Amazon and a group of our largest creditors who clearly believe in the value-creating potential of this business. Diamond’s near-term focus will be on implementing the RSA and emerging from bankruptcy as a going concern for the benefit of our investors, our employees, our team, league and distribution partners, and the millions of fans who will continue to enjoy our broadcasts.” Diamond recently reached agreements with the NHL and NBA to keep local rights through the end of this season. It remains in discussions with MLB on reworked agreements. Diamond has not reached amended terms with the defending World Series champion Texas Rangers and Cleveland Guardians, while its contract with the Minnesota Twins expired at the end of last season. not stand up to the lies about the virus and the vaccine? WHY? Is holding on to your seat of power in Congress or the Senate worth violating your personal values? Do you respect who you are at this moment? There is a saying, “fear is what you grapple with until you get your courage.” Where is your courage hiding out? I do not believe all Republicans support these actions, but where are you? Can you look at yourself in the mirror and say I am “proud of how I show up in Congress”? If ever our country needed you to be courageous, it is right now in this moment. Our country and the world need you and we are watching and waiting for you to step forward. We are hoping
and praying that you will do what is fair and just. We will remember your behavior and actions. The ones took and the ones you did not take. Our American democracy is fragile, and it is in a crisis. Our country is precious; she was birth by men and women, white, Black, Brown, rich and poor who shed their blood over the years to ensure liberty, freedom, and justice for all as a birthright. Are you willing to continue to dishonor their courage by saying nothing? Remember, … “Silence is a form of self- betrayal when you know the truth is not being spoken;” and when you remain silent, it is called being complicit. Shame on you. America Belongs to Us All.
I must hold on to my belief that as honorable men, women, and gender nonconforming people in public service, that when faced with the facts and truth, you will find it in your hearts to choose to do what is Fair and Just, not just for some, but for everyone. As far as I can tell, up to this point, truth is laying dormant in so many of you, waiting for your courageous voice to find itself and emerge. Yet, itis never too late to get it right. You can do this. Are you willing to forgive yourself and step forward? I am willing to forgive you. Please, do not continue to just go along to get along. Ask yourself, this question, “why won’t I stand up and speak up for my truth, and for the sacred oath that I swore
publicly to uphold? Why Not? You are creating your legacy daily. Do you care about what your children and grandchildren will remember as history documents your legacy of complicity to destroy American Democracy? Only you can answer these private, sacred, and important questions for yourself. May you be blessed with courage and compassion to come forward and speak the truth to save yourself and our American Democracy. It is worth saving. Remember it is a gift to us all. What will you do? Make your choice now. Act on i. You still have time to get it right. I close with a heart that is hopeful and open to the wonderful opportunity that your Republican voices will
come forth and be heard, and that you will be courageous. I have hope that you are not the American version of the Taliban and will speak Truth wrapped in defense of our American experiment, which is still in progress, where a transparent, kind and loving Democracy serves us all. Insight 2 Health What if every germ hit you at the exact same time? An immunologist explains By Joseph Larkin III Associate Professor of Microbiology and Cell Science, University of Florida When I was younger, I would watch “Batman” on my blackand-white television after school. Usually, Batman would face either the Joker, the Penguin, the Puzzler, Catwoman or any one of his usual opponents. However, on some occasions, Batman would have to face them all at the same time. What would happen if, like Batman, the immune system had to face all of its rivals at once? I am an immunologist who teaches the fundamentals of immunology to college undergraduates. My research generally focuses on factors that regulate immune responses and prevent autoimmune diseases – conditions where the immune system attacks your own body. As a scientist studying how we build immunity against pathogens such as the virus that causes COVID-19, understanding how the immune system combats multiple threats at the same time is immensely important to me. There’s no reason why you can’t come down with strep throat at the same time as when you have a cold. In fact, sometimes fighting off one enemy can leave a hole in your defenses
that another opportunistic pathogen can take advantage of. BAM! Understanding the rivals The first point to consider is what your immune system protects you from. The potential bad guys include cancer cells and dangerous microorganisms – including bacteria, viruses, fungi and more – that cause infections. The immune system must also be careful not to damage healthy cells and beneficial microorganisms that live on and inside you. You interact with thousands of microorganisms with every breath of air you take. Is the immune system facing off against all of them? Sort of. It takes a tremendous amount of energy to fight a battle once a rival gains a foothold within your blood or tissues, so your immune system works to prevent it from getting in the body in the first place. Your skin, snot, saliva and tears form a critical first line of defense. This is why burn victims who lose too much skin often die from overwhelming infection – their defensive barriers are too compromised and pathogens pour in. The immune system greatly prefers catching a microbe in snot and blowing it out of your nose, or giving you time to wash it off the skin of your hands, over having to wage a cellular war. Gathering an army of immune cells to fight pathogens takes a lot of
energy and makes you feel awful. For example, the immune system increases your body temperature to make it an uncomfortable place for microorganisms to live and grow, but that fever can also make you want to lie down for days. BOOM! Where are their weaknesses? When Batman faced multiple opponents, he would find a weakness shared by all of the opponents and target it to foil their plans. The immune system uses the exact same strategy. Certain microbes are considered pathogens largely because they are in the wrong place – such as inside your body instead of on your skin – and causing damage. Pathogens have specific parts on their surfaces called pathogen associated molecular patterns, or PAMPs. Very importantly, your body doesn’t make PAMPS. This means if your immune system comes across a PAMP, it knows it isn’t supposed to be there and will mount an attack. Because the same PAMP is present on many different pathogens, a strategy to combat one PAMP can defeat many pathogens. There are molecules in cells all over your body that can recognize PAMPS and destroy anything those PAMPS are on. It’s as though your immune system set up booby traps that can only attack your enemies.
Many of those booby traps are toll-like receptors. This family of molecules is located on the surface and inside of many of your cells. Once microbes contact these booby traps, they trigger an alarm that warn other cells of potential danger. In technical terms, this alarm is called inflammation. SPLAT! Raising an army of defenders Whereas Batman would need to think of a new strategy to combat the Joker, the Penguin and Catwoman, your immune system devised a plan long ago. When the virus that causes COVID-19 emerged in 2019, it was something people’s immune systems likely had never seen before. However, some people already had immune cells that could target components of the virus. How is that possible? The immune system makes many immune cells that are specific to antigens, or unique and recognizable parts of cancers and microorganisms, it hasn’t encountered before. This occurs through a process where pieces of your DNA randomly recombine to form unique immune cell receptors. The DNA in each of these immune cells is different from the DNA in any other cell in your body. Researchers believe that each person can generate at least a trillion different combinations of immune receptors, which is more

Your immune system encounters a legion of potential pathogens every day. than the number of pathogens an average person would ever face in their lifetime overall. Although the immune system makes a lot of immune cells, most of them aren’t used because you’re not exposed to the antigen they’re made to recognize. However, when an immune cell recognizes an antigen, it rapidly makes many copies of itself. Since pathogens can also multiply rapidly, clonal selection allows you to rapidly raise an army to fight them. Usually this strategy works well with one or two coinfections, such as if you have the common cold and an eye infection at the same time. But what if you were infected with a trillion pathogens at the same time? It would take a
tremendous amount of energy and time to build an appropriate army against each microorganism all at once. Unfortunately, the immune system likely would be overwhelmed by this challenge, and you would probably die. Fortunately, your immune system – like Batman – usually figures out the best way to shift a battle against rivals to its favor, pulling out a victory in the final minutes of the episode. As Zepbound dominates headlines as a new obesity-fighting drug, a nutritionist warns that weight loss shouldn’t be the only goal conditions and nutrient needs. 2. Focus on nutrientdense foods to ensure the body is getting required nutrients for disease prevention and optimal function. If medications reduce your appetite, it is crucial to maximize the amount of nutrients in the foods you do consume. 3. Include exercise in your program. Weight loss as a result of reduced calorie intake can decrease both fat and lean body mass, or muscle. An exercise routine that includes strength training will help improve muscle
By Mandy Conrad Assistant Clinical Professor in Nutrition and Dietetics, Mississippi State University If the buzz surrounding a medication could elevate it to celebrity status, then Zepbound is reaching Taylor Swift rank. Zepbound is the newest addition to the weight loss drug arena. In November 2023, it joined the list of obesity-fighting drugs – administered as an injection – to be approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The key to Zepbound’s weight loss potential is its active ingredient, tirzepatide. This is the same active ingredient found in the drug Mounjaro, which is approved to treat Type 2 diabetes. The relationship between Zepbound and Mounjaro is similar to two other popular drugs making headlines, Wegovy and Ozempic. Both Wegovy and Ozempic contain the active ingredient semaglutide, with Ozempic approved for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes and Wegovy approved for the treatment of obesity. Tirzepatide and semaglutide both mimic the digestive hormone GLP-1, which is released by the intestines when we eat to stimulate insulin production and help regulate blood sugar. GLP-1 also suppresses appetite while promoting a sensation of fullness. Weight loss medications are intended to be used in conjunction with lifestyle changes, such as exercise and a healthy diet. But too often, people view them as a silver bullet for weight loss. And the high price tag and variable insurance coverage for these popular weight loss drugs create a barrier for many people. I am a registered dietitian and dietetics educator. Whether I am counseling patients, teaching students or working in my community to address food access challenges and healthy eating, I focus on overall wellbeing. I am passionate about helping people make informed and realistic health decisions based on their circumstances and helping them see opportunities to overcome the barriers they may encounter. Health risks of obesity The potential impact of these drugs is staggering, since more than 2 in 5 American adults are obese, according to the National Institutes of Health. Obesity is not just an American issue, nor is it going away. The World Obesity Federation estimates that by 2030, 1 in 5 women and 1 in 7 men will be living with obesity worldwide. Many serious health conditions are associated with obesity, including heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, certain cancers and osteoarthritis. By treating obesity, a person can reduce or reverse obesity-related disease and improve both their health and quality of life. However, long-term weight management depends on a number of complex factors. Meal timing and types of foods

Overall health and well-being are about much more than just weight management. eaten can affect energy levels, satisfaction and hunger levels. A person’s typical schedule, culture and preferences, activity level and health history must be taken into consideration as well. No single “best strategy” for weight management has been identified, and research indicates that strategies for weight loss and maintenance need to be individualized. In addition, it is critical to note that research on the long-term effects of these newer weight loss drugs is limited. The available research has focused specifically on weight loss, heart health and metabolism and has found that ongoing use of these new medications is necessary to maintain improvements in weight and related health benefits. Common side effects and the emotional toll experienced by those who regain weight once they stop taking the drugs are trade-offs that need to be considered. More research is needed to better understand the long-term impact of both direct and indirect health consequences of taking drugs for weight loss. It’s not just what you see on the scale Throughout my years working as a registered dietitian, I have counseled numerous people about their weight loss goals. I often see a hyperfocus on weight loss, with much less attention being placed on the right nutrients to eat. Societal standards and weight stigma in the health care setting can negatively affect patients’ health and can lead them to obsess about the number on a scale rather than on the health outcome. Weight loss may be necessary to reduce risks and promote health. But weight loss alone should not be the end goal: Rather, the focus should be on overall health. Tactics to reduce intake and suppress appetite require intention to ensure that the body receives the nutrients it needs to support health. Additionally, I remind people that long-term results require attention to diet and lifestyle. When a person stops taking a medication, the condition it’s meant to treat can often return. If you stop taking your high blood pressure pills without altering your diet and lifestyle, your blood pressure goes back up. The same effects can happen with medications used to treat cholesterol and obesity.
Nourish your body with nutrients Despite the prevalence of obesity and the emergence of newer drugs to treat it, 95% of the world’s population doesn’t get enough of at least one nutrient. According to one study, nearly one-third of Americans have been found to be at risk of at least one nutrient deficiency. Additional research indicates that those actively trying to lose weight are more prone to nutrient deficiencies and inadequate intake. For instance, a decline in iron intake can lead to iron deficiency anemia, which can cause fatigue as well as an increased risk of many conditions. Adequate intake of calcium and Vitamin D reduce the risk of bone fractures, yet many people get less than the recommended amounts of these nutrients. It is true that a healthy body weight is associated with reduced health risks and conditions. But if a person loses weight in a manner that does not provide their body with adequate nourishment, then they may develop new health concerns. For example, when a person follows a diet that severely restricts carbohydrates, such as the ketogenic diet, intake of many vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals – or biologically active compounds found in plants – and fiber are reduced. This can increase risk of nutrient deficiencies and impair the health of bacteria in our gut that are important for nutrient absorption and immune function. Nutrition recommendations set by the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and the Dietary Guidelines for Americans provide guidance and resources to help meet nutrient needs to promote health and prevent disease, regardless of the strategy used to lose weight. Optimizing health There is no doubt that striving for a healthy body weight can reduce certain health risks and prevent chronic disease. Whether a person strives to maintain a healthy body weight through diet alone or with medications to treat obesity, the following tips can help optimize health while attempting to lose weight. 1. Adopt an individualized approach to healthy behaviors that promote weight loss while considering personal preferences, environmental challenges, health
strength and preserve muscle during weight loss. 4. Seek professional help. If you are uncertain about how to adopt an individualized approach while ensuring adequate intake of essential nutrients, talk to a registered dietitian. They can learn about your individual needs based on preferences, health conditions and goals to make dietary recommendations that support health. This article has been corrected to clarify that Ozempic is approved for the
treatment of Type 2 diabetes and Wegovy is approved for the treatment of obesity. Dreams and Nightmares: Life of a Menace Sharing Our Stories
By: W.D. Foster-Graham Book Review Editor DREAMS AND NIGHTMARES Life of a Menace By Coretha Davenport “Without a test, there is no testimony.” This phrase is one that comes up in worship and a person’s faith journey, for everyone goes through something in the course of their lives. For some, it happens early in life, and for others it’s later. That being said, I present to you Coretha Davenport’s memoir Dreams and Nightmares: Life of a Menace. Born in Minneapolis, Davenport’s story speaks of a life that was no crystal stair, almost from the beginning. The second child of six children, her father went to prison for murder when she was two. Much of her childhood was spent being bounced around from one place to another, from one relative to another. When the family lived in Natchez, Mississippi, one bright spot in her life was living with her godmother. When she was 10, her mother moved her and her siblings back to Minnesota. We speak of generational curses, and in Davenport’s case, she had seen her mother endure physical abuse at the hands of her stepfather, and she would experience this at the hands of relatives and some of the men in her life later on. On top of that, there was sexual abuse at the hands of male relatives, particularly one uncle. Having two children before she was 18, the family that was supposed
Coretha Davenport to love and care for her was filled with dysfunction, turning a blind eye to the abuse she suffered and preferring to use it as fodder for gossip, even going so far as to blame the victim. Her memoir is grittily honest about the life she led and the men in her life as an adult, and it seemed filled with more nightmares than dreams. She could have been permanently scarred both mentally and emotionally by her experiences, but when God steps in, everything changes. When it comes to physical and sexual abuse, especially by a relative, there is often a conspiracy of silence and a reluctance to speak out
about the abuse or press formal charges, which the abuser uses to psychological advantage. I acknowledge Davenport for her strength and her willingness to speak up and help to break the cycle of abuse. In her words, she could “hopefully inspire others to come out of the darkness and take a stand in the light.” Dreams and Nightmares is available through Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and the Minnesota Black Authors Expo website (www. mnblackauthorsexpo.com). Thank you, Coretha, for standing in the light and sharing your story!
