The August 28, 2023, Brooklyn Park meeting commenced with the swearing-in of Tony McGarvey as a City Council member. The major discussions were on the ordinance allowing residents to keep chickens and the licensing of edible THC and cannabis businesses.
Chickens At Residential Properties
The ordinance was first brought to the city council in 2012. The debate has been ongoing and is back to the council 10 years later. Some
residents want chickens as pets, for fresh eggs, for education for their children, for sustainability, and as a part of culture while others are in opposition. The latter cite issues like Avian Influenza, a virus that affects poultry, as one of the reasons against this proposal.
A random sample from a resident survey (800 residents) carried out in 2021 revealed that 67% of the residents are in support of an ordinance change, 22% oppose and 11% are undecided. Online and in-person surveys carried out in 2019 of 2246 respondents resulted in 57% being in favor of the ordinance and the remaining 43% in opposition.
Boyd Morson, Commissioner Central District was more concerned with the health safety, and welfare of the community members, and thus, was not in favor of this proposal. In his opinion, the conversation needs to be tabled once again. XP Lee, Commissioner East District is one of the supporters of the ordinance.
4 Main Ordinance
Considerations
From the surveys, below are some of the ordinance considerations; Smell; clean, and sanitary conditions for the chickens, controlled odor, and no to composting feed, feces, and bedding on the sites.
Bestselling author Frederick Joseph donates $20,000 in Back-to-School supplies and books at Bronx Elementary School
GIRLS PREP BRONX II
ELEMENTARY was the epicenter of a heartwarming philanthropic initiative led by two-time New York Times bestselling and awardwinning author, Frederick Joseph. Reflecting his ongoing commitment to communities and young people, Joseph generously donated $20,000 worth of essential back-toschool supplies and books to children at the school.
Safety; leak-proof and tight containers for storing feed, no chickens in homes unless they are under 6 weeks and feeding must be done in the run/coop.
Registration/Permit; Include a site plan review and inspection upon receipt of a complaint. Homeowner Associations; Strictly regulated, and letter of approval for applicant residents within a Homeowner Association (HOA). The Council voted to table consideration of the ordinance and directed staff
The generous contribution included copies of his recent work, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever - The Courage to Dream,” Nike book bags, school supplies, notebooks, and stress-relief balls. Beyond the tangible items, Joseph also ensured that attendees were well-fed, providing food for the event. Recognizing the financial challenges that some families face, he went a step further by distributing $50 gift cards to parents in attendance. “I’m from these neighborhoods in New York, and these kids remind me of myself,” Joseph shared. “I want to help provide for them some of the same things I wish people provided for me when I was that
age.”
About Frederick Joseph: Frederick’s literary prowess is evident with New York Times bestsellers like “The Black Friend” (2020) and “Patriarchy Blues” (2022) under his belt. He’s been a beacon in the literary world, gaining accolades such as the International Literacy Association’s 2021 Children’s & Young Adults’ Book Award and making the prestigious Forbes 30 Under 30 list in 2019. His activism, philanthropy, and poetic gifts have led to numerous honors, including

For approximately 80% of the world’s population, the first stop after catching a cold or breaking a bone isn’t the hospital — maybe because there isn’t one nearby, or they can’t afford it. Instead, the first step is consulting traditional medicine, which cultures around the world have been using for thousands of years. Traditional medicine encompasses the healing knowledge, skills and practices used by a variety of cultures and groups.
Examples of traditional medicine include herbal medicine; acupuncture;
Tui Na – which is a type of massage originating in China; Ayurveda – which is an ancient system of promoting health through diet, exercise and lifestyle from India; and Unani – which is another ancient system of health from South Asia, balancing key aspects of the mind, body and spirit.
In recognizing that traditional medicine and other alternative forms of healing are critical sources of health care for many people worldwide, the World Health Organization and the government of India cohosted their first-ever Traditional Medicine Summit. The summit took place in August 2023 in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India. The summit
brought together health care policymakers, traditional medicine workers and users, international organizations, academics and private sector stakeholders from 88 WHO member states. Leaders at the summit aimed to share best practices and scientific evidence and data around traditional medicine.
As researchers
interested in how to provide patients both in the U.S. and around the globe with the best possible medical care, we were interested in the summit’s findings. Understanding traditional medicine can help health care professionals create sustainable, personalized and culturally respectful practices.
“How you like me now?”
Deion Sanders (below), shouting the popular Kool Moe Dee lyrics to a hostile crowd after a 70 yard punt return at Clemson back in 1988…
So, I know that I talk about racism and race relations quite a bit in my posts, and there are myriad reasons for that which can be rolled into one major heading: “race still matters!”
Race doesn’t matter because I wish it to, it matters because from the moment that the first boat of stolen Africans arrived to be enslaved on plantations until today, the American colonies and eventual United (and Confederate) States have had race as THE central focus of the “bad” and “horrifically ugly” for over 350 of its 400 some odd years.
Such is why I was not
shocked, mind you, when Deion Sanders, one of the greatest athletes of the past half century; a first ballot NFL Hall of Fame inductee, a World Series and Super Bowl champion, and a talented sportscaster before diving into coaching from the youth levels all the way to the collegiate ranks, has been hit with ALL sorts of overt and subtly racist attacks from fellow coaches, sports fans, sportscasters, and self styled “experts” who doubted (and still doubt) his ability to coach big time football.
I do not mean to suggest that everyone who dislikes or questions Deion Sanders does so because he is a Black man—I happen to even know Black people who, like my late father Charles Hobbs, did not like the “Primetime” persona during Sanders’ playing days because he (and they) thought that he was too bold, too brash, and lacked “humility” on the playing fields and in post-game interviews. But my dad would balance the equation, so to

Critical health care for many
In many countries, traditional medicine costs less and is more accessible than conventional health care. And many conventional medicines come from the same source as compounds used in traditional medicine – up to 50% of drugs have a natural product root, like aspirin.
Many factors may influence whether someone chooses traditional medicine, such as age and gender, religion, education and income level,
In China, for example, as more people have embraced Western culture, fewer have chosen traditional medicine.
In contrast, many African migrants to Australia continue to use traditional medicine to express their cultural identity and maintain a cohesive ethnic community. A patient’s preference for traditional medicine often has significant personal, environmental and cultural relevance.
A framework for traditional medicine
Countries have been pushing the
WHO to study and track data on traditional medicine for years. In the past, WHO has developed a “traditional medicine strategy” to help member states research, integrate and regulate traditional medicine in their national health systems. The WHO also created international terminology standards for practicing various forms of traditional medicine. The practice of traditional medicine varies greatly between countries, depending on how accessible it is and how culturally important it is in each country. To make traditional medicine safer and more accessible on a broader scale, it’s important for policymakers and public health experts to develop standards and share best practices. The WHO summit was one step toward that goal.
The WHO also aims to collect data that could inform these standards and best practices. It is conducting the Global Survey on Traditional

speak, by adding that he loved Sanders’ talent, but feared that the “Primetime” persona would be deemed “uppity” by a white dominated culture that had always dealt with bold, brash, and confident Black men harshly, be it whippings, incarcerations, or brutal lynchings during slavery and Jim Crow—the latter of which ONLY ended “officially” with President Lyndon Johnson signing the Fair Housing Act of 1968—when dad was a 28-year old Army Captain fighting in Vietnam.
Now, my dad and his ilk’s fears for Deion Sanders back in the 80’s and 90’s never came to fruition because to keep it real, during that time period, so long as a Black man could entertain by their talents in athletics and stayed out of criminal trouble, they were relatively “safe.”
But even back in the late 20th Century, it was crystal clear to me that as salaries grew larger in the major revenue sports of football, basketball,

Acupuncture – a case study in safety and efficacy
Some traditional medicine practices such as acupuncture have shown consistent and credible benefits, and have even started to make it into mainstream medicine in the U.S. But leaders at the summit emphasized a need for more research on the efficacy and safety of traditional medicine. Although traditional medicine can have a range of benefits, some treatments come with health risks. For example, acupuncture is a traditional healing practice that entails inserting needles at specific points on the body to relieve pain. But acupuncture can cause infections and injuries if the practitioner doesn’t use sterile needles or if needles are inserted

How?
When you learn that Deion Sanders was actually a star high school quarterback and defensive back who was moved exclusively to defensive back upon arrival at Florida State University in 1985, you realize that he was treated the same way that his new NFL Hall of Fame brother, FAMU legend Ken Riley, was treated when he was moved to defensive back in 1969 by the Cincinnati Bengals after a stellar career at quarterback for Coach Jake Gaither.
The reason for those moves was race, and the fact that the quarterback position was always considered to be the primary role for the “smart,” “heady,” “cerebral” white boy or man because from time immemorial, racism in America held that Black men were brutish beasts of burden, first and foremost—not thinkers, gentlemen, scholars, or leaders!
incorrectly. Still, acupuncture is the most commonly used traditional medicine practice across countries, with 113 WHO member states acknowledging their citizens practiced acupuncture in 2019.
Interestingly, battlefield acupuncture has successfully treated many U.S. military members, for example, for pain reduction. It is simple to use, transportable and has no risk of addiction. There’s also some evidence supporting the use of traditional medicine, including acupuncture, meditation and yoga to treat post-traumatic stress disorder.
However, acupuncture practitioners aren’t trained in a uniform way across countries. To provide guidelines for best practice, the WHO developed standardized benchmarks for practicing acupuncture in 2021. The WHO aims to develop similar standards for other forms of traditional medicine as well.
Those of us who were born in the 60’s/70’s and grew up in the 80’s understand clearly why no matter where our sports allegiances may have rested, that we still instinctively cheered for Doug Williams when he was playing for Tampa Bay and winning a Super Bowl for Washington because he was a true pioneer along the same lines as Jack Johnson in boxing, or Jackie Robinson in baseball—death threats and vile letters laced with the “N-word” and all!
No, I write this post because Sanders, in many ways, is like so many millions of Black professionals across the country who are used to being doubted, underestimated, and ultimately discriminated against due to “assumptions” about their skills and abilities.
It reminds me of the time over two decades ago after I won an attempted murder trial and one of my friendly new white colleagues, after watching my closing arguments, casually said in the hallway that she was “pleasantly surprised by how articulate and convincing” I was in my closing argument. I cocked my head sideways and asked her sarcastically, “well, what did you expect from the son of a college English
Interest in traditional medicine is growing among those who have mainly used conventional medicine in the past. More research and collaborative efforts to develop safety standards can make traditional medicine accessible to all who seek it.

professor who minored in English himself at Morehouse College?” She turned red...and never responded...but she didn’t have to respond, because while I already knew that she was far from a KKK type of race hater, I still knew that she was still vexed by her own latent racial biases—biases that place Blacks into certain boxes until we break out of those boxes due to God given talent and sheer will. Well, Coach Sanders broke out of the proverbial box this past weekend, and while he will win and lose some games for the rest of his coaching career, his resounding success against a team that was just one game away from being champs last year has opened the door for more talented Black coaches to follow in his footsteps in the years ahead!

AFFECTION BETWEEN HUMAN AND ANIMALS
Mayong (Sun) Nyima
By
How many of you out there have (or have had) a pet at some time in your life?
As humans, we often think we’re the only game in town, and as such we’ve often taken the animal life around us for granted—or worse. As far the planet goes, the number of animal species that are either extinct or endangered speaks for itself. Although animals can’t speak or communicate the way we do, they can feel, as Mayong (Sun) Nyima illustrates with heart and passion in his book Affection Between Human and Animals.
A native of Tibet who presently resides in the U.S., Nyima possesses wisdom far beyond his 29 years.
Throughout the book, those who know him best have given their testimony to his caring, empathy, compassion, and the content of his character. From my serendipitous meeting with him, he embodies the following preface of his book: “Kindness in words creates confidence. Kindness in thinking creates profoundness. Kindness in giving creates love.”
Nyima shares his stories about the animals who have been part of his life, often under the most dire circumstances in their lives. When he speaks of the dogs, cats, and other animals he has saved—and those he couldn’t save--he does so with gratitude, fondness, and respect. However,
do not mistake the gentleness in his demeanor for weakness; he is not afraid to call people out on their cruelty. This caring and compassion inspired Nyima to found the Sarah Animal Rescue Team. In his words, “They need people to care after them, to look for them just like us, more than this. Humans are cunning but animals, they are not like us. They cannot pretend like a human. They cry when they are in real pain, they are happy no matter how small it might mean to us. They never forget the
good and never tend to hurt us until we hurt them.”
To obtain a copy of Affection Between Human and Animals and learn more about the author, he can be contacted through his Facebook page (Mayong Nyima). Thank you, Sun, for the love you put into this work, for reminding us of the value the well-being of animals has on this Earth, and the importance of how we treat others. And for those of you out there who have a pet(s), cherish the unconditional love your pet(s) give you.
