Myjourneyasabusinessleaderbuildingandscaling technologycompaniesbeganover30yearsago.Ihavebeen fortunatetoserveasanexecutiveandtrustedadvisorfor publicandprivatetechnologycompaniesthathavespanned severalindustries,includingclassicconsumerhardware, enterprisesoftware,networking,businessintelligence, payments,security,andcurrentwealthmanagement. Basically,Iamatechnologyindustrymutt!Mybreadthof experienceacrossmanyindustrieshasenabledmetobring uniqueperspectivestoeachjob.Ialso"hungmyshingle"as anoutsourcedGeneralCounsel,asuccessfulten-year experimentthatwouldhavecontinuedindefinitelybutfora greatclientandmentorconvincingmetoclosemythriving practiceandjoinhispubliccompany.Laterinmycareer journeyandnow,Ivaluethemissionandcultureofan organizationoveranythingelse.
Work,likelife,isneverwithoutchallenges.However,I don'tthinkmychallengeshavebeenparticularlyuniquefor mygenerationofwomen.Oneofmyearlyexperiencesthat epitomizestheunconscious,andevenconsciousbias,Ihave personallywitnessedandenduredthroughoutmycareer waswhenIwasamid-levelleadcommercialattorneyfora softwaredivision.Atthattime,theinternetandelectronic paymentswerejusttakingoff,andbankswereeagerto leveragethisinnovativetechnology.Mycompany approachedabankinJapanthatshowedinterestandthen begantoassembleateamtoclosethedeal.Mybosstold methat“Management"wasconcernedaboutsendinga womantoTokyo,fearingthatIwouldnotbewellreceived asawoman.Fortunately,Irefusedtoacceptthisviewand, withthesupportofmyboss,insistedandultimately prevailed.Asitturnedout,theJapanesebankprovedtobe moreprogressivethanthemanagementteamhad anticipated,andgenderwasanon-issue.
Despitethesechallenges,Ihavebeensuccessfulinmy careerbecauseIneverdoubtedmyselfandmyabilities;and IgenuinelylovetheworkIdo.Butmysuccesswasnot achievedwithoutthesupportofmanymentors--mostof themmalebecausetheywereinthebestpositionstomentor andsponsorme.Althoughsocietyandbusinesshavemore roomtogrow,Iamgratefulfortheprogresstowardgender equalitythatIhaveseenandbeenapartofoverthelast30 years.Iamalsoinspiredbythemanyemployee-led diversity,equity,andinclusion(“DE&I”)initiativesthat havesproutedinforward-thinkingcompaniestoday, includinghereatPersonalCapital.Astheexecutivesponsor ofourDE&ICouncil,Igettoworkwithamazing, dedicatedindividualsinourorganizationthatinspireusall tochallengeourbeliefsandbiases;strivetoincreaseall typesofdiversityanddoourparttoensurewenurtureour inclusiveculture.
