Editor’s Note THE ‘NEW NORMAL’ OF INTERIOR DESIGNING

A

part from technical glitches, intermittent network, frozen images and echo sounds, one most common annoying feature that most Indians reported during work video conference calls in India was that of whistles from a pressure cooker.

While we may have laughed off at this during our conference calls, it certainly poses questions regarding how ready our homes are for work. The situation is here to stay for an indefinite time and needs to be answered.

As the offices shift to homes and the lines between home and workspaces blur, the Interior Designing

Industry faces new challenges of making homes more compatible with work from home (WFH) features. The WFH model, analysts predict will continue even after the pandemic is over. Most predict a hybrid mode of work giving companies and employees the flexibility to work from both office and home as per the requirement. Accordingly, the way homes are designed will continue to be a crucial aspect.

The new normal interiors for homes are predicted to be flexible and functional. Right from wall colours that exude a cozy yet energetic feel to furniture that can serve multiple purposes, the design of a home will change to accommodate the new requirements.

Colours and patterns that have a relaxing effect on the mind and help bolster a secure feeling will be dominant. Flexible partitions, noise-absorbing curtains, lighting that is easy on eyes and yet bright enough for video calls will play a crucial role. Flexible, foldable and multipurpose furniture that can be equally comfortable to use for work or recreation purposes will stay in demand.

As for office interiors, maintaining physical distancing and hygiene will be the priority. The emphasis will be on how best to utilize the available

space to accommodate maximum people with minimum direct interaction. Even where direct interaction is unavoidable, the focus will be on creating feasible barriers that can help follow the hygiene principles. Natural and clean air circulation and utilization of natural light also need to be taken care of.

The task ahead is challenging, but not one that cannot be achieved with creativity and technology. Vipin Bakiwala graduated in the year 2004. He began working by himself during the initial years of his bachelor's. At the beginning of his professional journey, he worked in alliance with his senior pals but later established his own firm.

He believes that Space designing is like visual poetry. It is a behavior, a language that connects a human with his space; an approach that reflects his persona into it and makes him feel complete. What would be your advice for the budding startups and entrepreneurs in the industry?

Try to gain profound knowledge about Indian Architecture philosophies, design, crafts & craftsmanship.

Whenever a project comes in, we first try to know the client, his likes/dislikes, grooming, cultural background, profession and lifestyle.

This gives us food for thought to derive the project concept, which is then brought on paper through hand sketches, helping us in uniting with the project and the connected emotions, in its very initial stage. The concept is then materialized through drawings. And as the project grows brick by brick, we all grow with it, in thoughts, knowledge, and performance. And for the sake & regard of this irrefutable growth, we do not work in 3Ds which we believe somewhere reduces each of our growth, abandon us from broadening our imagination and being akin with the building at every stage.

What tool/technique does your company use to deliver the safer, economical, and more artistic interior designs to the customers?

As much as possible, we encourage the use of locally available materials, economical and easy to procure; sustainable materials; harmless materials, paints and polishes that do not release toxic gases or carry resin substance, as that could severely affect the health of workers and other people during and after the work.

Dig into the material details, and understand its touch and feel in depth. Don’t just follow aesthetics but strength and longevity too, as these are the key to sustainable design.

Before working independently, first, gain at least 3-4 years of experience under a senior, working in diverse projects and materials.

With the massive tech-enabled advancements, what are the opportunities and challenges evolving with it?

With technology booming up and information and images of cushy design available at everyone’s fingertips, it is risker as not all of them are feasible in

every condition. The client is also unaware of the technologies and the cost involved related to it.

Because of this the responsibility of a Designer has become further serious and challenging as well.

On the other side there also are some wonderful software those make the work of an Architect easier as it creates multidimensional images which gives a complete idea to the internal team working on it and to the client as well. It’s now much easier with products like CAD for drawings, along with SketchUp, 3D max, rhino to project the designs before they become a reality. The latest being Virtual Reality where in you can actually see & feel the space being inside virtually.

What would be your advice for the budding startups and entrepreneurs in the industry?

Quality in work, long term vision, solidarity towards the industry, uniqueness in design are things never to be compromised. They never go out of fashion. The stronger you hold on to them the better footprint you shall have. Do your research well, gain good amount of practical experience before diving in.

Office Space The traditional office spaces were full of endless rows of desks with managers located at offices nearby observing them.

Then, the workplace was altered to becoming more spacious with a mix of private offices along with open work stations. Later, came the cubicle system, dedicated cafeterias, conference rooms, private cabins, etc. Even now this system is used however, some offices also use the ‘hot desking’ system. The employees are not allocated particular desks and can work from any empty space they like.

Homes Simple furniture or in some cases no furniture was used in homes during earlier times. These days homes are no longer just walls and furniture. Sustainability and adaptability: Adaptable also means sustainable, look for sustainability on a very broader aspects of planning principles, integration with context and response to urban fabric. All this is the backbone to any built format. Application based sustainability will eventually follow. If you are so much concerned about the present alone, you will end up building something that may become redundant in an ever-changing scenario the world is going through. The world has seen such examples post WWII. Cities, urban areas and building must exist coherently to embrace the change and give a clear insight for future. Define sustainability in its true sense.

He believes that the well-designed building can inspire individuals to get attracted towards meditation and feel peace in surroundings.

Then they prepare a conceptual design based on the inputs given by the client and get it approved by the client. After that, they discuss and finalize the final outcome, in regards with the estimate, look & feel, and finishes etc.
