Abhinav Gaur–the Founder and Managing Head of EduPorm Educational Services –is a young doonite who decided to say no to corporate hustle in big metropolitan cities, left opportunities at top multinational companies and decided to work in his hometown Dehradun. The Making of an Exemplary Leader
Abhinav had been born and raised in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, a place which is also known as ‘the education and research hub of India.’Abhinav completed his schooling at Kendriya Vidyalaya in 2015. He was followed by his graduation in science from Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Gharwal University, post-graduation in chemistry and a professional degree in education from Shri Dev Suman University.
Doon Valley has a rich colonial history. Being a pure doonite, Abhinav’s family roots were linked to the colonial history of Doon Valley with his great grandfather Late Shri Fakir Chand Gaur, who served as a British Zamidar for Tea, Leechi, and Basmati produced during the dominant colonial era, followed by his grandfather Late Shri Mandan Lal Gaur who was an influential-elite accountant for agricultural produce in newly independent India. While his great grandfather from his mother’s side Late Shri Ayodhya Prasad Shulka, was a reputed officer at Forest Research Institute, his grandfather from his mother’s side Naredra Narayan Shukla is a retired sericulturist from Forest Research Institute.
Abhinav’s father is a retired government officer. Through him, Abhinav was introduced to the world of scientific research, while his mother motivated him towards the domain of chemistry. From a young age, Abhinav has been passionate about making a significant difference in society, and from his senior school, he started volunteering with different NGOs. In 2015, at the age of eighteen, Abhinav
decided to start his own social venture to promote animal activism, vegan living, education for all and environmental protection campaigns. In 2018, after graduating, he involved himself in the coaching and tutoring sector.
Within two years his first small-scale coaching institute grew into a brand with over 5000sq.ft state-of-the-art infrastructure at the posh locality of the popular Rajpur Road of Dehradun. His name was popularized, and he got excellent reviews as a teacher. But when a nationwide lockdown was imposed, time changed its course for Abhinav, and his institution failed to survive the kick of the pandemic. The mentality of never giving up–no matter what happens kept Abhinav focused and going. He started to look for Ed-Tech options. He realized that there is a gap to be filled between educators and new technologies. First, he began to train his staff for efficient and effective online teaching. A few months later, EduPorm was born under the umbrella of Yuvaan Research & Educational Trust.
Abhinav Gaur is politically very active in district Dehradun's Raipur and Doiwala legislative assembly. His name was speculated as the possible MLA candidate for 2022 Uttarakhand assembly elections–but rumors shed off as he was under twenty-five years of age in March 2022. As a rising political leader, he aims to make Dehradun the research and education capital of India.
Flowering of EduPorm Educational Services
The unique journey of EduPorm started in August 2018, when Yuvaan Research and Educational Trust was founded by two educators Abhinav Gaur from Dehradun and Himanshu Thapliyal from Pauri, intending to establish an offline and online educational platform to serve the following objectives:

Initially, the trust was associated with offline educational platforms with a little bit of online presence.
However, when the pandemic disturbed offline education, the mode of education shifted towards developing online resources through which creative courses could be offered to students.
Bridging the Tech Divide
Using third-party services, Abhinav realized that there is a gap between education and technology that can be filled. When vaccines were available and the situation seemed to get back to normal, Abhinav directed the work towards developing offline resources and recovering from damages caused by the pandemic.
During the second wave, when online became a new norm, under the umbrella of Yuvaan Research and Educational Trust, a venture by the name of EduPorm Educational Services was launched in March 2021. The aim was set to create an elite platform that can bridge the gap between education and technology. A non-profit venture that serves the interest of educators and students. By offering general education and short-term skill-building courses, now the horizon has been expanded to help educators get online and effectively teach using technology.
Dynamic Hybrid Model
After nearly a year, EduPorm offers teachers dynamic web portals, social media management tools, and educational content. It is also growing as an offline brand called ‘EduPorm Classes,’ with two functioning branches in Dehradun city and a handful of more franchises coming soon in Dehradun, Haridwar and Saharanpur.

Surmounting the Challenges
Education is not about selling a product. No research and development can be implemented in this sector to improve product quality as there is no product at all to improve. A teacher is basically selling his/her words and experience, so the positioning of a teacher as a brand is a fundamental
necessity in this sector. Parents look for experienced teachers, and experience does not grow on a tree; it comes with time when year by year, an individual learns and improves continuously; contradiction is that an experienced teacher is older in age and hence is not that computer savvy.
Making such a teacher expert in branding and handling social media platforms, a website, and an application was challenging. It took months of hard work to develop a pocket-friendly idea that could serve the purpose without requiring much technical knowledge. As the venture aims to socially benefit the society instead of being another unicorn, pricing our services was always a challenge because compromise with quality was never an option.
Educational content development was also a big challenge as wide domains were to be covered. With the help of experts and trainee educators, the content was gathered in eight months. Once we identify what educators need, how it can be offered at minimum possible fee, how tech-friendly codes can be placed, how a teacher can reach students with all this and lastly, what extra and unique students can get, we are all set to reach greater heights.
As an offline coaching institute, the challenge was to position our-self in a market full of big bears having tons of advertising capital. The question was what unique could be offered so that students choose EduPorm instead of existing educational brands. From previous experience, Abhinav overcame this challenge by adding short-duration attractive courses which are based on CBSE and ICSE schooling syllabus only. The courses are offered to students through an online pre-recorded mode where a student can learn in their comfort and, along with regular studies, earn free certificates by completing these courses.

Abhinav shares , “Story of Bill Gates and Elon Musk is very catching, and it motivates us towards building our legacy, but what we often ignore is “To become like them, one is supposed to go through what they have been through”. Long-term motivation is what makes you sit among the top 10%.
As a teacher, consider your students as clients you are serving, adapt according to them, motivate them, and always have a positive attitude towards them. Help them become better, and eventually, you will grow as they grow.”

Connecting Customers to Savings
Satyajeet recalls that his uncle has been operating two supermarts in Bhubaneswar for 20 years. He is well aware of the problems faced by the small and middle-level shopkeepers these days to compete in the market with big players like Big Bazaar and other retail chains.
It takes too much time to make a sizeable customer base if you are new in the market and other than that a lot of money has to be spent on marketing, “ If we have to inform customers about any sale or new deals in our shop ,” says Satyajeet explaining further, “ Because there is no right place to give information to customers without spending a lot of money .”
And this is not just one person’s problem; millions of shopkeepers across India face this problem. “ This is the problem we wanted to solve from the businessmen’s perspective, and of course, it solves the problem of customers too ,” mentions Satyajeet.
A Timely Solution for Relevancy
Speaking about the challenges he had to surmount to ensure Fydo’s success rate reached greater heights, Satyajeet says
that presently, people–from smaller towns and cities–depend on traditional methods to know any information about deals discounts or any upcoming sales with different brands in malls. They see advertisements in newspapers or billboards.
The problem that arises is Relevancy. He elaborates , “When we want to go shopping and need the information on deals and discounts, at that time we don’t find any place to get the info from and most of the time when we don't want to buy, we see the banners and billboards.” Currently, people have to physically go to the malls and maybe, call their friends to get info if there is a sale in malls or discount on brands.
Satyajeet states, “ So, our core Business model is simple yet very effective .”
A Profoundly Effective Freemium Model
Fydo App provides information about the best deals, offers, and festive and seasonal sales from shops in a city. Now, this is the freemium model: customer sees the information for free, but the information being provided by the shopkeepers, brands, or malls is a form of advertisement, so they pay the fee.
“Initially, when we start in a city, we usually take no money from the merchants to display the offers and products in our app, but as our customers grow and reach a substantial level then we start asking for an advertisement fee from the shops and that time they are more than happy to pay us as we provide them with many customers,” expresses Satyajeet
Other than this, Fydo has a premium plan for merchants that Satyajeet calls the Channel Partner Plan, in which a commission is charged to the merchants for providing them direct customers and thus generating sales.
“Right now, our majority of revenue comes from commissions from shops, but within a few years, our model vision is to slowly generate most of our revenue from advertising as this is a billion-dollar industry and has much potential for hyperlocal Discovery e-Commerce,” reveals Satyajeet
Channelling Partners Profit
Regarding the benefits of the services/solutions that Fydo offers to its clients, Satyajeet says that their fast growth of user base is because they found the solution for the problem that the people were already facing. No other start-ups were working on this problem.
He adds, “ Our USP is that we tie up with all the shops who want to provide information about deals and discounts to their customers in their city, we don't stick to few shops that will pay us some money and what other few start-ups are doing. We operate on a freemium model .”

Another thing is their reward system. Once a customer has downloaded the Fydo app, it provides them with some reward points for shopping which they can use while paying at Fydo’s channel partners. Now the more the customers pay using the Fydo app, the more rewards they get, and this goes on. “ This is one of the main reasons we have a huge customer retention ratio ,” believes Satyajeet.

Every time a customer opens the app and looks for any particular brand or service, or place for that matter, the app, as well as the team Fydo gets various information about their customers. What was your inspiration behind venturing into the business arena?
I started my career when I was under 20 years of age. I was a highly energetic kid, and my father wanted me to channel my energy correctly. I began working for a similar business, and from a mere intern, I was roped into various other departments within just three years.
I learned the business’s ropes and gained experience in various sectors.
Marketing came to me naturally. And soon, I was heading a team comprising people who had been in the organization much longer. Value retail is an interesting format. You need to constantly study the pulse of the consumer and put forward what will resonate with them.
I love challenges, and this industry constantly needs you to act, react, improvise, and impact.
What were the initial challenges that you had to surmount to ensure Baazar Kolkata’s success rate reached greater heights?
The challenge initially was to understand the consumer’s preferences. The Indian consumer is not easy to crack. Moreover, value retail is a different game altogether. You are catering to an entire family that comprises various age groups, different tastes, and varied habits.
We have spent a considerable amount of time researching the purchasing pattern of consumers, exploring the innovations, analyzing the competition, and developing the retail model to become a front-runner in the said domain.
What professional values and qualities do you think your client’s values in you and Baazar Kolkata the most?
We deliver what we promise. The quality of our products and our constant endeavors to upgrade the merchandise as also the very experience of shopping - this is what is integral to our brand, and we have been able to create a positive image with this.

Please tell us about the saga of Abbzoh Expertise Unique since its inception.
I always say this when asked and it always stands true - “I did not choose my profession, my profession chose me” As I entered this training industry at the age of 19 worked at CRISIL and went on to be associated with training. While studying in Australia as well I had a stint selling American Express Credit Cards there and, in that sales job, working with people and teams. I seemed to become more and more certain of my calling. People were my calling, helping individuals to find the potential within and watching them grow into who they truly want to be was just so fascinating and fulfilling. When I came back to India, I was always inclined to this industry but frankly, the idea of coaching was very alien at the time, especially in India, I worked in training for a while, and worked under a great boss and mentor.
When I started off coaching was not easy. There was a sense of ego and power play because successful people did not think they needed help doing anymore, and people who didn’t consider themselves successful did not consider being coached as an investment but rather a waste of time and money. But this challenge was one I was ready to accept and overcome. I landed clients who were eager to improve and ready to invest in themselves, and in this digital marketing era, I am proud to say 80% of my business started and grew on referrals and word of mouth.
I kept learning and growing and kept studying. I learned intelligent leadership and was coached by Steve Jobs’ coach John Mattone, I have studied emotional intelligence, cognitive behavioral therapy, and neurolinguistics in my coaching journey. Of course, now the industry has crossed billions of dollars and coaching has become a sought-after industry for many aspiring coaches, especially since the pandemic, and I am just truly privileged to be part of this industry for over 15 years.
What was your inspiration behind venturing into the business arena?
The inspiration was simple, I noticed people were desperate to run their businesses better, have powerful leadership, healthy relationships, and have fulfilling lives but some were afraid to seek help and others didn’t know where and how to start. My inspiration truly came from these people and the urge to be that bridge between where they are and where they want to be. People inspired me to venture into this business arena.
What were the initial challenges that you had to surmount to ensure Abbzoh’s success rate reached greater heights?
The first challenge was my age. I started coaching at the age of 24, I had a lot of judgment based on age and what a young coach can provide, whether she will be mature or wise enough, whether she will be unbiased and objective, whether she has the knowledge of relationships to the level where she can understand. But these doubts always vanished after our first consult or session.
Another was people being coached because they want to do better and be better not because something is essentially wrong with them, this was a stigma and there was no clear understanding between coaching, therapy, and counseling for that matter. Sometimes I had to explain the difference and prepare them for a less clinical approach. Also, since
coaching was lesser known, people shared their lives fully and honestly, whether it is about their company’s financial conditions, leadership status, or a family’s relationship status it was a bold step for them to share and trust.
Sometimes you had the ones with the power play, bigger fish or overbears took time to open to the idea as their egos would get the better of them but it was all just a matter of time, and plenty of lessons and learning for me. Being patient and dealing with clients calmly has helped me overcome these challenges as I too have been learning in the process. Today some of the ego-driven clients are the humblest and my biggest cheerleaders.
What professional values and qualities do you think your clients value in you and Abbzoh Expertise Unique the most?
That’s a question best asked to them but would like to believe it is my emotional intelligence, integrity, perspective, and ability to help them make decisions or steer in the directions they wish to with more clarity.

I have been running a successful podcast available across all platforms.
