Around two-three decades back, payrolls were very simple. There were more government jobs with a very structured pay scale that was mostly uniform across the nation. Private jobs were limited, had a higher pay-scale but the popularity of private jobs was less. Then came liberalization, privatization, and the Information Technology era. These changed the Indian job market forever. There were jobs unheard of and pay scales one could only imagine. The IT industry started recruiting thousands and not hundreds of youngsters. New structures
From the were given to the pay scales and new terms like performance pay, variable pay, etc were introduced. As the payroll became complicated, the chances of human errors multiplied. The use of technology became inevitable. Gradually specialized software was introduced which could take care of the huge employee number and the variation in their payroll structure. Of course, human intervention was always and continues to be required. However, the dependency on technology has been compounding in nature. As work-life progressed and new aspects get introduced, payrolls continue to evolve. We now have freelancers, contract employees, outsourced employees and other categories teeming the job market. These new inclusions will again need a new kind of structure to fit their bill. he Covid-19 pandemic has proven itself to be a crisis that we weren’t ready for. Initially, most countries took it lightly, believing it to be just another common flu – however, it was anything but common. The extremely contagious and lethal virus forced the countries to go for total lockdown, which lead to the disruption of the entire global economy. Small businesses collapsed overnight and even though the lockdown has been lifted mostly now, the businesses are still feeling the effects of the disaster caused by Covid-19.
But when we look at the scenario and wonder whether it could have been worse, it certainly could. If this pandemic would have struck us a couple of decades ago, the entire global market would have collapsed, but thanks to the technological advancement that has taken place in the last two decades, we have been able to survive. This gives us the staffing industry, a leverage to offer project based, need based, time based solutions to the clients. Companies can scale up and scale down their businesses as per the requirement and situation – this is the best advantage of staffing. The same manpower can be engaged in another project with another client any time. This gives job security as well as cost effective solution, both. How necessary do you think it is to align business with the latest technology? Very important. Especially during these difficult times, technology has become the backbone of many businesses.
