Redefining Product Creation
The Shapifier As a founder of Shapefy, I have always wanted to breathe life into machines and ideas. My childhood was mostly spent playing a game called Mechanix. I used to construct mechanical models and projects using steel parts, nuts, bolts, wheels etc. I also tried repairing some of the electrical appliances at home, trying to fix them with whatever expertise I had of using a soldering iron, changing some burnt out resistors and capacitors, and instead I ended up making them non-functional in the process. All of this resulted in me developing an interest towards learning new things and implementing new ideas wherever possible. In my early teens, I worked on some interesting electronics projects that ranged from simple push button LED lights to remote controlled cars. Eventually, I purchased my first 3D printer six years ago, to print some small models and providing 3D printing as a service. This led to Shapefy being born in one corner of my room, and the rest is history.
A
s 3D printing infiltrates various industries, there are not enough engineers who have the background to design, perform and operate the machines. For additive manufacturing to become a common method, manufacturing companies must invest time and money in employee training for both incoming and seasoned engineers. This can come at a challenge, though, since seasoned manufacturers are often reluctant to learn new technologies. Also, the lack of awareness regarding different 3D printing technologies sometimes becomes a challenge. The technical know-how required to understand how the product will be manufactured and the kind of quality expected from each technology creates
a difference between expectation and reality. Delivering what is expected from an apex 3D Printing and Manufacturing firm Shapefy is making a difference in the 3D printing space. Shapefy provides end-to-end product development and manufacturing solutions, helping customers starting from just an idea to full scale manufacturing. It helps individuals and businesses with their projects at any stage of development. “Our industrial engineers take care of all the designing and 3d printing iterations to provide the customer with a working prototype,” says Lakshay Wadhwa, Founder and CEO of Shapefy. This prototype can be used for design verification and initial level product testing.

The team of Shapefy plans to further dive into the B2C space, targeting normal school and college going students. “This is where we think we can make the biggest impact,” suggests Lakshay. Incorporating 3D printing much early into the product development will result in a surge of new technological advances. This is where our online digital platform comes into picture. Project management and guided quote generation makes it easy for a normal consumer to go online and order 3D prints and machined parts, etc., for their projects. “We plan to revamp our online digital platform to bring more accurate pricing for all 3D printing technologies along with other traditional methods of Vacuum casting, CNC Machining and Injection moulding,” states Lakshay. It will further allow the team of Shapefy to save labour costs in preparing manual quotes and conduct deep manufacturability analysis. The initial impact of the Covid-19 pandemic resulted in a sudden decline in the 3D printing and the manufacturing demand as most companies stopped their research, development, and prototyping phases. But somehow this resulted in even more startups coming up with Covidrelated products helping in detection, education, relief, and adherence to COVID-19 guidelines etc. “We plan on leveraging our expertise for customers to get their Covid-19 solutions or products designed and manufactured seamlessly,” concludes Lakshay.

3D Printing 3
D printing is at a tipping point and is about to go mainstream to its bigger picture. Many executives and engineers agree on the fact that this technology is moving beyond prototyping, from developing tools, trinkets, and toys to large machines and infrastructures. Additive manufacturing is creating a safe, reliable, and durable environment for the products and is creating a stable platform for the real customers in moderate to large quantities. There are diversified industries including aviation. medical, home application, automobile, and consumer electronics that are using 3D printing to ramp up their production. The advantage of 3D technologies is that they are "cutting edge". Few firms are being true pioneers in implementing 3D printing to enhance their brand while communicating the benefits in a concise and value-added way. As a result, many of the customers would not completely understand the advantages of the new 3D services, and so companies need to engage them with services that are specific as per their requirements.
17 | December | www.insightssuccess.in
Promoting 3D printing services include: Providing Samples to Engage Customers Companies can leverage the advancements of 3D printing by engaging their customers with impressive and diversified samples to display to them what is possible using 3D printers and scanners. If the client is an automotive designer, showcasing effective solutions about how they can design and build automotive parts from a 3D printer can develop a good connection between attracting that customer to use the services. Moreover, companies can display a 3D-printed booth mockup by providing customers with an STL or CAD file for test printing. Besides, companies can make sure the materials they are using in their samples are diversified such as wax, rubber, polymers, nylon, carbon fiber, metal, etc., including color options with diversified plastics, and resins. The demand for printable 3D materials is constantly increasing. The more materials companies are showcasing, these products are more likely to impress their audience. Targeting Potential Customer Audience The variety of industries using 3D technology may shock you today. Invisalign, a leading medical equipment manufacturing company implements using 3D printers to produce clear, custom orthodontic braces. A shoe company wanted prototypes of different designs and used 3D printing to get samples faster and cheaper. Moreover, there was a tool manufacturer that required 3D samples to ensure that its products were compact and handy, and its switches are easily accessible. So, who are the effective solution providers? The answer is just about promoting business that enables possibilities and never forgets about consumers. They will be amazed if companies in 3D printing can provide sustainable and quality assured 3D prints, products, and novelties. Digital signage companies, ad agencies, industrial and commercial prototyping, packaging, marketing firms, premiums, and incentives. What unique propositions does Forcyst offer, giving it an edge over its competitors? As Forcyst provides complete product development from start to end, we believe that the combination of core mechanical and electronics with prototyping and manufacturing under one roof is the need of the hour and has given us a unique identity in the market as one of the key players in the product development field. Our team always focuses on the combination of cost-effective, least delivery time, and highest quality outputs for any projects or services. 3D printing being a niche area, what are the challenges that this sector poses? 3D Printing has become quite a competitive market because it has its own requirements, customers, and products. The first most important step in any prototyping project is selecting the best suitable technology for it. Our technical team understands the requirement of clients and studies them thoroughly to arrive at a selected method. The main challenge is to maintain the consistency and quality output within committed lead time at economical rates. It is assumed that 3D printing is a full machine dependency job, but in actual it is equally both machine and manual dependency work where output depends on the technical person’s inputs at different prototyping stages.
Various industries utilise 3D printing. Are there any specific sectors that Forcyst focuses on? Please share. We provide prototyping services to industries like medical & pharma, automobiles, electrical, and fastmoving consumer goods and products (FMCG). What has been the effect of the pandemic on Forcyst, and how do you plan to or have already countered the same? The pandemic has affected the global markets adversely. Since we are into service industries and are dependent on the supply chain, the first lockdown in March 2020 got us on the toes for the next six months. First, we ensured the safety of all our team members at offices and production units and implemented the work from systems for our maximum workforce. Since the supply chain was getting disturbed, the team ensured that the ongoing projects were completed at the earliest before completing the standstill. We are a product development company with all resources to develop, test and manufacture. We quickly took the responsibility of playing our part in the pandemic by manufacturing the ventilators, oxygen hoods, medical essentials, safety goggles, and sanitiser bottles. In this way, we ensured that our production units ran uninterrupted with a 25% workforce on the shop floor and the rest working from home. We have implemented the policies of work from home till March 2022 for different divisions within the company.

According to you, what is that one recent development in 3D printing that could possibly be the next big trend? If we consider the Indian market, there have been good variants of affordable desktop printers launched by overseas companies in collaboration with Indian companies. The best part is it comes with a wide range of material selections. So, these days even professionals like doctors, engineers, and freelancers can use these desktop printers for their daily work. Metal 3D printing is still quite costly in India, so there is huge potential in various sectors if there are affordable solutions for metal 3D printing. Brief us about Forcyst's future perspectives. Forcyst, being in the service industry, has always focussed on strengthening the core technical team, implementing cutting-edge technologies, and simultaneously expanding the production facilities so we can provide many options to our clients. It will be a bit early to say at this stage, but Forcyst is coming upcoming up with a new production facility in 2022, that will focus on advanced design, research & development, and manufacturing services to cater to defense, aerospace, automobiles, and medical products. The year 2023 will be a very important year for Forcyst as it will benchmark its footsteps with the launch of its homegrown products. The company will release an official statement timely through its various platforms; till then, kindly follow our website www.forcyst.com to know for more updates.

D printing is an exciting industry that is rapidly advancing in popularity and affordability. The main aspect of 3D printing, which makes it exciting is its versatility. 3D printing is now being utilized in almost every industrial vertical: Architecture, Medical, Manufacturing, Packaging, Jewelry, Dental, Automobile, Space Tech, and so on. Though the adoption on a larger scale is still in process but, understanding the advantages of the technology over conventional methods is attracting companies to invest and improvise their productivity. The main challenge irrespective of the industry is that adopting 3D printing on a larger scale will still need time to match the industry-specific processes in a streamlined manner. One such company that provides endto-end rapid production solutions is Melt Rapid LLP. The company tries to cater to the complete solution from prototyping to manufacturing under one roof, which has led the company to be the leading service provider in the same across Eastern India. Melt is founded single handily by Ishan Bajpai, Founder and CEO of the company, who is a mechanical engineer having experience in product design and development, who has successfully converted his passion into his work and is working towards bridging the product development gap effectively. In the interview below, Ishan talks about the challenges and journey of Melt Rapid. Kindly brief us about your company and its journey so far. Melt is a rapid production service providing to start-ups, which is
bridging the gap between prototyping and production, with an initial focus of utilizing advanced 3D Printing technology to design and develop prototypes. We are now providing prototyping as well as production solutions, also covering industrial manufacturing methods such as sheet metal fabrication, injection moulding etc. Started in the eastern region of the country i.e., Kolkata, West Bengal and expanded into Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, Patna, and Bihar. Currently, we are providing services across PAN India. Talking about the journey, I would say that it has just begun and like any other start-up it was never easy, developing a strong vision to land in a competitive market was itself challenging. It is because of those few people who show their support in your journey be it your friends, flatmates, family, or any other person who has trusted or have shown faith in your vision either financially, morally, or psychologically. It was the reason that we have come this far, though still, we have a lot more to go. Already I have been failed a few times in my earlier projects because of lack of funding, time, and support. I was looking for something that could just sync with my passion, and it was then when it struck my mind that it is not the final goal that I am aiming for but the process where I can implement my ways, thoughts, emotions and develop something out of it. For the first few months, I was working on my own, managing both my office as well as my work at the same time, it was hard but not impossible. I started operating from my P.G. room, where I had managed to convince my flatmates to install a small machine in the kitchen. It was difficult for me to manage both the 8 hours of job and then again 8-9 hours of work for my startup. I had many sleepless weeks,

where I used to complete my sleep in the office during lunch hours. For the startups, I used to conduct meetings in café and restaurants and used to take orders based on my design and development skills. Those days of struggle made us improvise our lead time from weeks to few days as of now. Brief us about the featuring person and the motivation behind choosing this particular industry? I have always been passionate about upcoming and trending technologies, which can add something to national
development. Additive manufacturing just synced with my thought process as it was something new that came up and had a very huge market ranging from Automobile, Aerospace, and Industrial to Medical and Healthcare. The basic requirement in this technology was a visualization of products and their production process and being a designer that is what I have been doing for the past four to five years. This inspired me a lot and hence I just kept learning more about it. After gaining much knowledge from the internet, I made up my mind to just start by focusing on a small market area and then slowly expanding to the greater ones. As I was much confident by then knowing what my skills are and what is required in this very market. Brief us about the services and products that the company offers. We showcase ourselves as a Product Design and Development service bureau, where we are utilizing 3D Printing as a prime method to provide the solutions. We are focused on the services side (Design, Prototyping, Reverse engineering and so) and some part in setting up rapid prototyping labs (3D Printers, Filaments and more) in industries and institutes in order to promote and increase the awareness of the technology. What are the unique propositions that the company offers giving it an edge over competitors? Our approach has always been customer-oriented where we keep the complete process from handling the client, guiding them throughout the process of the order, packaging, delivery and to after-sales support simple and convenient. Special attention to any damage deliveries, which might happen due to courier
mishandling was to tend to replace the order with a new one, no question asked. 3D printing is utilised by various industries. Are there any specific sectors that the company focuses on? Please share. As said, we are a service bureau where we are not specific to any industry although as per current time we are being approached more by industries in Manufacturing, Bio-Medical, Electronics, Engineering, and Dental sectors. Our flexible business model has allowed us to work with companies in the vast industrial segment like Gifts, Miniatures and Sculpting, Jigs and Fixtures, etc., which allow the clients to explore our strong technical knowledge and utilize it in their favor. What has been the effect of the pandemic on the company and how do you plan to or have already countered the same? Pandemic was a major hit across the globe breaking the supply chain across all the industrial sectors leading to the shutting down of various businesses. Instead of breaking down, my company took this as an opportunity to find a product meeting the demand during that time and eventually, we came up with a highly demanding product - Face Shield. My company along with the national 3D printing community developed few designs of the face shield and using the 3D printing technology we were able to quickly bring them to market, which could have only been possible via this technology. Considering the circumstances, it was not a downtime for us in fact we supported a lot of hospitals and front-line workers in our region.

According to you what is that one recent development in 3D printing that could possibly be the next big trend? Two advancements in 3D printing that could possibly mould the way manufacturing or development will be done in the coming future are in the areas of metal and construction. Considering the current progress in the mentioned fields there would be a time where 3D printing houses and metal fabrication will be a common thing across the nation, reducing time to market and improving product functionality and material properties. Brief us about the company’s future perspectives. With our stream of work in the product development domain, our future plan holds growth and expansion in the same also to add more similar solutions to broaden our portfolio. Considering trends in this sector we have been observing exponential growth across the past two years and expecting the same in the coming time as well. Having said that we are also working towards including as many industries as possible to increase the reach and awareness of the technology.

n our everyday lives, active involvement of technology and its innovations in redefining the boundaries of productivity and creativity. These innovations gave rise to emerging trends like 3D printing. Since the commencement of 3D printing, it is not only enabling cost-effective solutions but is also increasing the working efficiency in several industries. Levering the advancements in technology 3D printing is enabling sustainability that includes: Low-Cost Service In the 3D printing sector, services are providing online manufacturing of required products. This means that you can upload your design, get an instant quote about pricing, see your products being made almost immediately. This is a colossal step forward from the complex traditional method earlier used in manufacturing and it is significantly saving time and production costs. As a result, applications compatible with 3D printing technology are experiencing growth on a daily basis. Flexibility in Production and Manufacturing Implementing traditional manufacturing methods in designing complex products was difficult. 3D printing enabled efficiency for
designers and entrepreneurs by providing them with new printing materials, including metal, fabric, resulting in expanding the scope for adopting 3D printing to multiple sectors. Industries like automobile, energy, aerospace, and real estate are being efficiently driven by the involvement of this technology and its presence is being felt across the industrial spectrum, around the globe. Powering Medical Advancements 3D printing is making new developments in the field of medical science. The victims of accidents are being provided with 3D printed bone implants that are created with absolute precision. These implants often mean that metal plates or fastenings do not require surgeries for their removals after the bone is healed. Treatments are significantly influenced by such preoperative models and surgeries are being substantially reduced at times. 3D printing is powering new developments in the medical field with consistency. schedules and is reducing manufacturing time for the long-haul procedures and reducing energy consumption altogether. The method of additive manufacturing produces less waste compared with any other manufacturing process, and when it comes to plastic, these factors are driving the growth towards a sustainable clean environment. In this modern age, 3D printing is redefining the boundaries of creativity and expanding the frontiers of what is possible. Here is a glimpse of how 3D printing is enabling eye-catching innovations:
of muscles. These are attached to the bot's 3D printed backbone. These bots are functional when students shine a blue light to get them to contract, possessing them to exercise for building strength. The contraction of these muscles is driving their movements consistently. Fixing Fractured Bones With 3d BioPrinted Silk from Spiders and Moths South Korea's Rural Development Administration and Hallym University created a modular 3D silk printing system that produces components that are suitable to use within a living organism.
3D Printed Robots from Living Tissues Students at the University of California are creating Bio-bots – tiny bots indulged with living tissues. They can move and walk, but they do not have any electronic parts.
This system is developing new silk 'filament' is made from fibroin protein that also constitutes seventy-five per cent of the silk, naturally produced from the spiders and moth larva. This fibroin is being used to recreate the plates and screws that are being used to fix broken bones.
What they do have are muscles. These students have cultured cells within a hydrogel so that they grow into rings
The First-Ever 3D Printed Office An infra-structure created using a 20foot-tall 3D printer with a 120-foot
robotic arm sits in Dubai. It has enabled tremendous cost efficiency in construction-related expenses including labour and waste and saved a lot of time for the process. Leaders in real estate are predicting 3D printing is evolving properties and is changing the ideas of traditional brick and mortar houses. Properties that are built using 3D printers are convenient and are easy for the users to operate efficiently, as they are prefabricated. There is a similarity between these houses and the ones that are made from Lego. A Respiratory Diagnostic Device Maya Verma, a student from Stanford University California has developed a diagnostic device made from a 3D printer that can analyse a patient's breathing patterns and rectify if the person is suffering from pulmonary disease. One of the tools that are available for this procedure is a spirometer, however, it is expensive. Just like a spirometer, this device consists of a 3D printed mouthpiece, an electronic board, and a smartphone. This device works by getting the breath of the patient into its 3D printed mouthpiece that is connected by the PCB that processes the data and a smartphone gives out precise results, eventually leading to the diagnosis. Enabling Innovations for A Sustainable Future It is inspirational to experience the emerging uses of 3D printers and the innovations that are happening across the industries. This technology is playing a vital role in developments with efficiencies that are driven by 3D printers. It is a drive towards a sustainable future. - Abhishek Joshi
