ransforming the way businesses work, IoT (Internet of Things) is modifying the ways businesses communicate with their clients. IoT is a key driver when it comes to transforming the world digitally. As per the expert evaluation, it is expected that businesses will invest near about $5 trillion on IoT in just next five years! This is clearly the result of augmentation of connected devices and tremendous expansion in the amount of data.

IoT, Transforming World by Transforming Lives

IoT is speeding its way through Web 2.0 leading towards the future while transforming everyone’s lives. In its early days IoT was luring everyone by connecting every device imaginable, giving a new way to the businesses to attract the attention of their clients. The overdoing of developing industrial IoT products without understanding the clients’ needs reduced the demand for these products. But all this has just contributed towards the better understanding of the clients’ demands and introduction of the consumer-facing connected products contributing to the connectivity, while solving real problems. IoT is truly transforming the lives of people by contributing to the ‘Smart Cities’. By helping in cost savings, increasing quality of life and promoting safety in urban environments IoT is making the dream come true of many Smart Cities. Life will be a lot easier with smart lighting, connected streets, smart parking, smart meters, connected apartments and on-demand services in the most innovative cities. It is the consumer-oriented IoT that is transforming the lives of people. With this, IoT is also transforming the different industries in various ways. Let it be construction, transportation, agriculture, healthcare, oil and gas, or energy, all the industries are getting technically sound with IoT. Practically, the industrial applications of IoT are in many ways more advanced than consumer-facing applications. The outcome is that the things in the IoT are getting smarter. The intelligence bestowed upon things by IoT is carving a future that will connect everything with everything. IoT is transforming the world by transforming lives!

Device Authority: Delivering Security & Trust to the IoT Ecosystem

I

oT IAM has become the talk of the town for the technology enthusiasts, as it has already become an integral part of every IoT solution. The security industry is seeing a paradigm shift, whereby IAM is no longer solely concerned with managing people, but also managing numerous things that are connected to a network. A different approach is required to enable IAM for IoT and this is where Device Authority comes into the picture. Device Authority is one of the top IoT solution providers which addresses the challenges of Identity and Access Management for the Internet of Things (IoT) without human intervention. At Device Authority, they help their customers and partners to simplify the process of establishing trust for the IoT, enabling end-to-end security architecture and scale for the IoT through their innovative technology platform. KeyScaler™: An Exemplary IoT Security Platform KeyScaler™ is an innovative IoT security platform, which provides trust for IoT devices and the IoT ecosystem, to address the challenges of securing the Internet of Things. KeyScaler™ uses breakthrough Dynamic Device Key Generation (DDKG) technology that delivers unrivaled simplicity and trust to IoT devices. This solution delivers automated device provisioning, authentication, credential management and policy based end-to-end data privacy/encryption. At Device Authority, they deliver automated provisioning of PKI certificates to any connected device on an organization’s network, independent of manufactureprovisioned keys. PKI certificates provide a strong framework for identifying and authenticating individual devices, and are regarded by many experts as the first step to secure the entire IoT ecosystem. However, provisioning these certificates manually becomes time-consuming and cumbersome at IoT scale. Device Authority’s automated

solution drives efficiencies and reduces human error, while enabling Certificate Authorities (CA) to offer their certificates directly through the KeyScaler™ platform. They also provide automated password management, which is crucial for industries such as video surveillance, medical and Industrial IoT, where devices tend to be vulnerable and are exposed to the danger of being hacked/compromised due to default usernames and passwords. The Trailblazer of Device Authority Darron Antill, Chief Executive Officer, Device Authority is a dynamic and result oriented leader with an extensive experience in leading and growing IT companies that specialize in IoT and Enterprise security software and services across the globe. Darron joined Cryptosoft in 2015 as the CEO, and then became the CEO of Device Authority Ltd in 2016 as Cryptosoft and Device Authority Inc. merged and changed their name accordingly. Darron has worked with a small portfolio of companies in an Executive and advisory capacity, establishing strategic direction for the respective companies, developing go to market propositions and securing investment funding for expansion. Prior to his Executive Director roles, Darron was CEO of global software company AppSense, where he was responsible for driving the global growth of the company by entering and expanding into new markets, while delivering new and innovative products that are helping companies transform their workspace management initiatives. During his tenure, Darron guided the company from $25M in revenues to more than $100M, expanded and scaled the company globally, and led the AppSense team to raise a $70M investment round from Goldman Sachs. Prior to AppSense, Darron was the CEO of the UK’s leading Information Security Services company Vistorm, June 2017 | 18

“

Building Trust for every Thing in IoT, securing devices, applications and data without human intervention

“

Choosing the Right Partner to Grow Business in Right Direction Today, the IoT market is based on a fragmented set of technologies. To ultimately build an IoT solution and provide real value to a client, a solution provider needs to bring together a set of services and technologies. Identifying those technology partners is important, whilst building up the skills and knowledge in their organizations is a challenge. Hence, choosing the right technology partners is important, and relying on those to innovate and evolve their technologies to ensure market relevance and readiness, - asserts Darron. Preparing for a Better Tomorrow At Device Authority, they strongly believe that the future would be a world of connected devices, with different industries operating with minimum human intervention. Change in the mindsets of people is going to be the real game-changer, and its impact is going to be much bigger than the impact of the smart phone revolution. So, they are totally focused on ensuring that the security is available for these devices, so that they can, not only protect the data created from these devices, but also protect the applications these devices are connected to. Future Perspectives Device Authority is growing at a rapid pace and aims to focus on building partnerships and contract base, accelerating its device registrations as market ramp takes June 2017 | 19

off. With a 20x increase in the IoT devices over the coming years, security is going to be critical. So, Device Authority will continue to develop its strategic alliances and OEM partnerships of the KeyScaler platform, and focus on thoughts around developing a white labelled version of KeyScaler and co-branding with other IoT platform providers.

igger, faster, everywhere! The measurement of how we rate technology in general, but more specifically data communications. From the days of spending hundreds of dollars to upgrade from a 14.4 to a 28.8 modem, we have always wanted the data to arrive as fast as possible. More importantly, we have always wanted the user experience to keep improving as we breach new horizons and figure out how to make it bigger, faster and everywhere. It’s in human nature to want to always make things wildly more impressive from a performance perspective. The car engines just kept getting bigger and bigger to make the cars go faster and faster. At a certain point, the realists had to step in and make it clear that an even bigger engine doesn’t do anything, because the rest of the car is not equipped for that power. The engine itself has to get more efficient with technology, not just bigger, and we have to start thinking about other things, such as stability, safety, efficiency and longevity. As nostalgic as some of us can be over the 1960’s vehicles, the era of the Prius and Tesla are here. Even the older style muscle cars are packed with much newer technology and safety features. I remember the days of bragging about the bonded 128k ISDN line and when my friend got a 500k modem. The location to live would greatly be determined by what type of internet is available. Today, if I ask some of the savvy network engineers what their bandwidth is at home, they won’t even know, and if they check, it’s usually around the

50-100Mb. Meanwhile the less savvy will brag about their 300Mb or 1Gb fiber and will be upset if they are only testing at 700Mb. Why is this the case? What changed? Are we just getting older and not caring about latest and greatest tech anymore? After digging a bit deeper into this question I realized that we are those realist jumping and saying “do you seriously think you are using more than 100Mb at home?” The reason the internet is crappy is not because of the speed, but because it’s crappy! So, what are the important applications of the internet? Browsing, Voice, Email/messaging, Social media, Shopping, Video streaming (movies), Payments/banking etc. Of all of these applications, it seems that security, privacy, latency, quality and reliability would be the most important things. Bandwidth would really only come into play for streaming video. Netflix suggests 5Mb/s for every HD stream. That means at 100Mb, I can have twenty separate HD Netflix streams at the same time, and even that I’m sure never happens in any household or office. So why do we push for 200Mb, 500mb or 1Gb? Do we just love the sound of it? I predict that there will be some refocus of how connectivity is provided. The main focus will not be bandwidth, but will be all the other parameters with bandwidth being one of them. Intel finally changed to June 2017 | 20

model numbers to make it clear that the clock speed is not the only metric. (I3, I5, I7) SD-WAN is becoming a reality for all businesses and it will soon become a reality for homes as well. SD-WAN provides reliability, quality, some privacy and latency/jitter prevention. It also opens a new way of doing security and making it more accessible for everyone. This is the beginning of a next evolution of how data will be delivered worldwide. The connection between LAN and internet has relied on the wrong metric and poor quality for long enough and the world is realizing it now. Along with the realizations and new technologies, people will quickly retire the old metric and start looking at new metrics as the litmus test of connectivity. Carriers have been building services bundled together with their unreliable connection. They are now starting to shift to provide those service OTP or at the top, which mean provide it on the IP layer and decoupled from the connection carrier layer. Long time ago, Nortel made a big bet on services over layer 2 and they lost, because it wasn’t decoupled and couldn’t provide the level of integration that was needed. Meanwhile, other companies like Cisco put their services over layer 3 and quickly became the dominant player in the industry. Connectivity will decouple from services to enhance the connectivity and provide the services separately on top of the enhanced connection. Welcome to the future of always connected with quality, reliability, performance for its intended uses, not just making the gauge hit the red line!

orld is growing at a fast pace and so is data. Agility and flexibility of big data applications are gradually taking the form of the Internet of Things (IoT). Internet of Things brings more than an explosive escalation of endpoints. It is unconventional in several ways. The surge and escalation of IoT gave rise to a colossal increase in the volume of digitally generated data. The limitations of current cloud computing is a subject of broader discussion. To the answer to these emerging challenges new computing technologies have arrived. Introduction to Fog Computing A simple definition of fog is ‘cloud closer to the ground,’ which gives us an idea of functioning of fog computing. Fog computing is now positioned as a layer to reduce the latency in hybrid cloud scenarios. The terminology refers to a new breed of applications and services, particularly when it comes to data management and analytics. It is a layer in the middle of cloud and the hardware. In cloud computing data needs to be accessed to the central mainframe. Fog Computing offers local and faster accessibility to edge devices. There are two planes in a fog computing network. The ‘Data Plane,’ also referred as forwarding plane, and the ‘Control Plane.’ If anything happens to the data packets, it is determined by the data plane. The computing resources can be placed anywhere in the network with the help of data plane. The distribution can be done on the edge of the network. A critique of the network is provided by the control plane, functioning with the routing protocols which run in the

architectural control element. IoT data can be undertaken in a data hub or smart device which are closer to the sensor with the help of fog computing. The data in fog computing can be accessed in between devices locally without any help of the cloud repository. This will help to boost accessibility, and collaboration among devices and data centers. Fog Computing Under IoT Fog computing is an archetype that extends cloud computing and services to the edge of the network. The distinguishing fog characteristics are its proximity to the end users. Fog infrastructure redistributes the data and compute, so that much of the action takes place on the edge devices right on your finger tips. The application services are hosted on the network edges. The data from the things where sensors are attached on the object of interest is transported to the services to the edge of network (a fog network). From the fog network the data is transported to the remote services hosted on the internet to store, manage and process data (cloud network). The goal of fog computing is to improve the efficiency and reduce the amount of data that needs to be transported to the cloud for analysis or processing or storage. Emergence of Fog Computing The world is marking a colossal rise in terms of digitally generated data from IoT and connected devices. The growth of smartphones and applications is enabling more users to access data, computation power as well as control and manage their end devices in real-time. A littlest data is June 2017 | 22

required by conventional cloud architectures to send to the central cloud through edge fork devices for computation and analysis, which eventually adds latency. Fog computing allows the edge node devices to carry out some local data processing, cache data management, local resource pooling, local device management, dense geographical distribution, load balancing, latency reduction for better quality of service and edge node analytics. It results in enhancing overall user experiences.

applications and services. With the help of shred-and-spread nature of the fog architecture, the business will run more efficiently and costeffectively. Fog provides highly functioning internal business services. It also provides a common framework for collaboration and communication. It helps IT and OT business teams to enable work together and bring in cloud capabilities closer.

Advantages of Fog Computing Fog computing have several advantages over its ancestor, cloud computing. Basic cloud computing technology is utilized by fog computing at its core. It helps to boost usability and accessibility in different computing environments. The advantages that fog computing offers are as follows• Globally distributed network helps minimal downtime • Place data close to the end-user Fog-empowered edge node devices locally analyzes the • Load balancing most time-critical data. It results in the lowest latency and • Create dense geographical distribution prevention of major damage before it may even occur. Time-critical data can consist of alarm status, device status, • Maximize network bandwidth utilization • Adopt numerous verticals fault warnings and much more. • Optimal operational expense • Business Agility For a persistent or periodically storage less time-critical data is sent to the central mainframe. It can be retrieved as • Support mobility and IoT • Better Interconnectivity and when required. Less time-critical data includes files, • Enhanced Quality of Service (QoS) device logs, reports for analysis and much more. • Latency Reduction How it is Beneficial for Business The bottom-line impact adds instant value to business. Fog Cloud computing is going out-of-date and is relevant when it comes to Internet of Things. In the near future, fog computing makes the production of revenue-generating computing will take over and cloud will be pushed to the products and services more efficient and therefore is more side lines. Fog computing will be handling all critical work. cost-effective. It helps in acceleration of rollout cycles, The way the IoT is growing, it needs a special infrastructure reducing costs and broadens revenue bases. base that can handle all its requirements. At present, fog The new revenue streams creates value for IoT. The streams computing is on a surge and it seems to be the most feasible will come from both IoT and Embedded AI and 5G. It will option available. foster the development of long-awaited revenue-generating Functioning of Fog Computing The cloud is becoming congested due to more and more devices connecting to the internet. In fog computing, most of the processing takes place in data hub or on the edge of the network. The implementation of fog computing separates the data obtained from the closest IoT devices on the most biting aspect which is time.

Enevo:

Waste and Recycling Services Right-Sized for You

F

ounded in 2010, Enevo is a revolutionary company with a goal to transform the financial, environmental and social impact of waste. By gathering and scrutinizing data from refuse containers across the world, Enevo can form productivities and cut the cost of waste collection and incentivize recycling. Enevo simplifies, derisks and enriches the waste management process, making a sustainable, waste-free environment a more achievable reality. Currently, the company has raised over $26m in private equity funding to date and continues to capitalize highly in R&D and geographic expansion. They are headquartered in Espoo, Finland, with offices in the U.S., United Kingdom, Germany, and Japan. Enevo proactively manages waste and recycling services and has an ultimate vision to turn waste into a valuable resource. They believe in their mission, communities to the knowledge, services, and tools to reduce waste.

Johan started his first company, Profile Media, in 1996, developing pioneering multiplayer games for mobile phones. After merging the company with an online marketing solutions company in 1999, Johan moved into online retailing by co-founding Hippodome.com, an online equestrian store. After selling the business, Johan moved to Meridea, where he worked as a senior software specialist developing mobile banking and security software. Four years before, co-founding Enevo, Johan worked as a General Manager at Japan-based Acrodea, Inc., heading the company’s European branch and the development of 3D graphics software systems for mobile phones. Johan holds an M.Sc. in Information Technology from Aalto University and fluently speaks English, Swedish and Finnish.

Innovative Leaders of Enevo

Enevo manages all aspects of waste and recycling and ensures their clients only pay for the services they receive. They are doing this by placing ultrasonic sensors in waste containers that indicate how full it is at any given time and identify when the container should be collected. They perform some wizardry on this data, (waste analytics,) and their team uses this insight to manage each container more efficiently. Their services maximize the customer’s cost savings, reduce service calls, and eliminate overflowing containers. Enevo services various industries ranging from restaurants and retail to commercial and residential/multi-family housing properties. Their services are unique because they take the guessing out of what is happening at the container level; so much of the industry operates on assumptions.

Seven years back, one of Enevo’s cofounders, Johan Engstrom, looked outside his apartment window, and saw his waste container being collected, which was only half full. He called Enevo’s current CEO, Fredrik Kekalainen, to share his experience and determine how waste collection could be more efficient. After few latenights brainstorming sessions, Enevo’s first sensor was built, and the rest is history. Fredrik initiated his first company in 1996 while studying at the Hanken School of Economics in Helsinki, Finland. Eightball Ltd., a pioneering mobile software business was successfully sold in 1999. He continued his startup journey as co-founder of Fathammer Inc., a developer of 3D graphics software systems for embedded and mobile applications. Fathammer was acquired by Japan-based Acrodea Inc., shortly before it went public on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in October 2006.

DECADES

-By José Antônio Scodiero, Director & Founding Partner of FAST COMPANY BRAZIL

T

he world of the Internet of Things promises to be the main engine of the global economy in the next years. In developing countries, such as Brazil, the opportunities will be even bigger. Considering the size of the local market and the pressing need that Brazil has in increasing the innovation rhythm, technology usage and development, the country can already be seen as a big global player by companies from this sector. In this moment, the more accurate motto for companies that want to act or are acting in Brazil is “Innovate or Die.” After a cycle of more than 10 years of continuous growth, that put the country in evidence on the global landscape as part of the select group of so-called BRICs (Brasil, Russia, India and China) and that stressed even more its leadership in Latin America, Brazil is now entering, in the past two years, a moment of political tension that has reflected directly in the economy. The moment now is of reviewing and restructuring. But in spite of the perception of some foreign executives and entrepreneurs that this is not a good time to invest in the country, it is clear that Brazil had a virtuous cycle of many years and reached a higher level. All

this indicates that, for sure, not all is lost. Far from it. The time is for opportunities. With the stabilization of the smartphone market, there’s a great potential for the technology industry - especially in the semiconductors area - in business involving connected cars, agriculture, livestock, smart cities, among others. To fully use this opportunities, it is necessary to understand in which ways it is possible to develop the best technological solutions to different regions. And the solutions to problems from different countries can only be found locally. Investing in the right time and in the right moment Despite the low participation of Brazil in the semiconductors industry, the country has a great potential to use the Internet of Things and to develop in this sector. It is a field in which no one has the advantage yet: we are, theoretically, in the same level as United States and China. Besides that, a chip to a sensor for IoT is cheaper and easier to develop than one made for smartphones. Therefore, it is less costly to invest in IoT. June 2017 | 30

IoT Technologies Contributing to the Renewable Energy

T

he Internet of Things (IoT) represents a modern reality. IoT has been encircled by the services that are associated with the things like hardware, embedded software, and communication services. IoT solution is integrated with one-to-one services or with multiple products.

How Internet Of Thing Functions on Energy? Internet Of Thing tenaciously insights to pursue from new Internet-connected devices which can be used to develop new services, enhance productivity and efficiency and develop to prove real-time decision making and decode the critical problems. In today’s technical world, as we all are adjoined by the devices, energy companies have escalated interoperability and security challenges. It also delivers an amalgamation of scalable hardware and software solutions specifically to meet the market needs. The real end-to-end security that IoT necessarily requires has been integrated by the expertise. Since decades, when innovation and control expertise were drawing intersections between information technology and devices, the companies jointly supervised to deliver interoperable end-to-end solutions. The energy companies are also evolving pretested and per-validated IoT products and solutions such as a gateway, to provide building blocks. With an extreme temperature and safety requirements, these solutions will incorporate the capabilities that support a wide range of vertical markets like industrial control and energy where devices functions in domains. Especially for energy companies, this can be the great flexible move to accommodate new energy source, better management of assets and operations, greater reliability, enhanced security, better customer satisfaction and innovations of new business models and services. Since the tool enabled the smooth combination of two-way power flows from fragmented distributed resources like wind or solar, IoT technologies are relevantly contributing to the renewable energy. Behind-the-meter processes such as on-site energy storage or electric vehicle charging. IoT technologies have been successfully established as a fundamental platform that justifies an ensuing Energy Cloud, which leads to the more distributed, and increasing intelligent grid. Remote Monitoring & Reliability Energy Optimization Safety and Security Decrease Downtime Predictive Maintenance

Empowering Innovations Smartphones and apps are becoming main user interface on IoT. The IoT addresses the consumer electronic market as well as the B2B industry. Depending on analysts, the value of IoT is essential to be from $300 B to close $2000 B in 2020 depending upon on what is accounted in IoT market. Connected LED lamps are expected to be the largest by far in IoT energy services. The incremental cost of hardware and embedded software is relatively small, whereas the service and analytics opportunity is much larger. To build awareness of their products, almost all companies tried different approaches and feature sets. So primarily, many of the suppliers focused on the IoT market on the goods of hardware and software. According to the business models, however, the market will increasingly be driven by the services. There will be service opportunities, that are associated with coordinating and managing the multiple things that typical consumers will interact on an average day. The value chain for IoT for devices and services will come up with a multilayered, understanding the brief measure of analytics software which is designed to pull out the usage trends for further product and service marketing initiatives. IoT generates a heavy data that address the analytics to transform huge volumes of data into a small quantity of operational information. Comfort Benefit The flair benefits of IoT in the energy efficiency market sector is huge for end-users and integrators. IoT will permit end users to measure, check as well as adapt the installation according to the requirement of the market within no time. For energy efficiency system integrators, IoT will exceptionally improvise their capability to distinguish the customer requirements for integration and commission. By utilizing remote diagnostic, the integrator will make a correction to the maintainability??? their systems and also fix the capability of signified products. However, this market is dominated by large players who have historically protected the highly beneficial market by maintaining an extremely high level of required investment to develop complex solutions while implementing specific standardization at the same time. The IoT promises to break the two entry barriers by offering low-cost flexible new communication solutions coming from the internet world. As a consequence, new players are being attracted to this market. SME’s and June 2017 | 35

startups may offer low-cost solutions, at least for a full set of niche applications, while large players from the Internet world may also enter as enter as direct competitors of the traditional large players. The opportunity provided by a large, new potential market is counterbalanced by the risk of these new players entering their traditional market. However, this risk may be balanced by the opportunity to partner with these new players, creating a completely new open ecosystem. Future Directions through IoT on Energy The future of the energy industry will be distorted with the Internet of Things. As energy management experiences other connected devices being developed, it will then gain a greater control, data and energy savings. It’s an exhilarating and challenging time for energy management, and time to harness the opportunities opened by the IoT. Iot-based technology solutions across the globe, associated services foresee to bring tremendous value to the energy sector in future. Hereafter, it will aid the companies to be more flexible in adopting IoT solutions to predict asset performance and swiftly integrate all sections of energy in the system. Conclusion No matter we are at home or at the workplace, IoT will redeem the complexity of managing energy consumption from different places and provide an all-in-one stop. Devices like smartphones, laptops, and tablets can have access to other smart devices like air conditioner, or washing machine for enhanced usability. IoT will now extend to more convenience of lower bills from the devices like remote-controlled households, and home security. IoT-based technology and solutions are expected to raise the immense value to the energy sector. In the coming days, IoT is expected to climb the market hills to grow the energy market from $7.59 billion in 2015 to $22.34 billion by 2020.

he above infographic is astonishing when you really delve into the numbers. The last few years have been quite interesting when it comes to the IoT space. I have personally taken a back seat and watched how the industry has sprouted, from an embryonic platform to an early catalyst for possibly becoming the next “Skynet (no pun intended). For some time now pundits have been predicting great things for the Internet of Things (IoT),

June 2017 | 36

from smart cities and smart homes to smart energy grids, driverless cars and autonomous robots. What is in no doubt are the number of “things” that now have “connected capability”, and it is rising fast; according to one leading analyst, 6.4billion connected things will be in use by the end of this year, an increase of 30% from last year, meaning 5million new things are being connected up to the internet every single day. The term internet of things (IoT) was coined round about the turn of the millennium and is widely held to mean the connection of “things”. There are a number of factors driving IoT. First, consumers are demanding greater convenience, speed of delivery and personalisation of the goods and services they consume. There are also other drivers for the IoT explosion we are witnessing. The costs of infrastructure are on a downward trajectory. Sensors are becoming smaller, cheaper and more energy efficient and battery life is improving. The further innovation of cloud computing platforms and the emergence of specialised IoT services on them mean that the data collection and analysis necessary for wide scale deployment are more accessible. Here you can see one infographic from Deloitte in 2014 that shows the value they analysed for smart homes and smart cars. Interestingly enough these percentages have not differed too much till now. Is IoT Fact or Future? IoT is right at the top of the “hype” cycle and firmly perched to what everyone is talking about. Mckinsey & Co predict that the economic impact of the IoT could be between $3.9tn and $11.1tn per year by 2025. That is a huge industry considering it was only born 16 years ago.

Adrian Hinrichsen Marketing & Business Development Director, Datumize

June 2017 | 37

One of the main question I get asked a lot is “where do you see IoT making the most advantage”? Currently the top industries are

domestic/leisure, utilities/energy and transport/automotive. At Datumize we are seeing traction in all these sectors with each project very much different to the next. Our everyday environment is changing, sometimes without us even noticing, however our lives are being made easier for it. Although we are moving quickly to an IoT environment, we are also facing “Barriers to connection”, where businesses and consumers do not share the same vision of IoT. One suspicion is the concern for security and how IoT technology could be hijacked and manipulated by those for ill intent. Other factors are more technical in nature, and seem to be around operating systems, pricing and current offerings. All of these factors will have to be overcome if we are to achieve the holy grail of “smart Cities” and connection of things. In Conclusion IoT is a concept which is no longer discussed only by technical scientists, it has very much moved into the mainstream. Certain industries have embraced IoT more

than others, for example domestic/leisure, utilities and transport are leading the way. We are all consumers and citizens, and a great deal of education needs to occur before the reality of IoT is understood and accepted by us at large. Data is the key to IoT and organisations seems to want to get their hands on that “Dark data”, but do not know what to do with it once they have it, or how to turn it into a value for their business. It is here that obstacles occur in our everyday business environment as the resources needed have currently not been implemented into the infrastructure and this will not happen until businesses understand the value that is passing them by on a daily basis within their organisation. IoT is potentially the most exciting technical revolution to have happened in a long time, and if we are able to help businesses and consumers connect in a smarter way, help build the resources and infrastructure to support this new environment, then the way we live and work will change forever, in a very positive way.

PayRange: Attained the Indispensable Change in E-payment

T

he payment system in any country needs to qualify some parameters like the litmus test of efficiency, safety, security, soundness, and accessibility. In order to address all these, payment systems have evolved from barter to currency, to digital systems. We are witnessing an enormous change in the payment systems, disrupting the monopoly of physical/paper-based system by electronic ones. PayRange is creating a new world of artful convenience. A world where convenience means consumers get what they want, where and when they want it. In this world, payment is fast and simple. Barriers magically disappear and create amazing experiences for consumers. At PayRange, their innovation trajectory from being the industry’s first “mobile payment” solution to becoming the world’s fastest growing payment network for everyday things has been an exciting couple of years. The company has been given the opportunity to offer the first complete front-end solution for any coin-operated machine. One that cost effectivity brings mobile payment to machines and a platform built with features and tools to drive business growth and customer loyalty. A range of services that is true to its Name PayRange is a payment network for “Internet of Things”. Hundreds of billions of transactions are conducted annually through “things” such as vending machines, commercial laundry, amusement, and more.

can view activity, manage devices, change pricing, create offers, run promotions, offer loyalty programs, obtain sales and inventory data, and run reports ad-hoc in real time. The system has been validated on thousands of types of machines. The company has a team with deep domain expertise, patented technology, solid traction, first-mover advantage, and unique access to the market. Consumers absolutely love the experience and give the PayRange App five-star reviews. Merchants join the network with an inexpensive thumb-drive like device that is installed inside the machine. Installation takes just 30seconds and no tools are required. With a family of devices and interfaces, the system works with virtually every “thing” that accepts payment today, and will work with the millions of “Internet of Things” devices in the future. An initiator who concatenated paying with IoT PayRange was founded in 2013 by Paresh Patel, a serial entrepreneur and veteran of the unattended retail industry. Competiting payment technologies for machines were too clunky and too expensive, highlighting the opportunity for a payment system designed specifically for the IoT. PayRange was introduced to provide merchants and consumers with the simplest, most accessible mobile payment solution bringing both the connectivity and payment capability to millions of unconnected things.

The company started deploying two years ago and already have a more live PayRange enabled machines than there are ATMs operated by Bank of America, Chase, and Wells Fargo combined! PayRange machines are located across all 50-states and Canada, and can already be found in vending machines at 60 of the Fortune 100 companies. Nearly 100 million transactions have flowed through their system already.

The speed of technology advancement over those years has been one to watch. From the unattended retail industry and cashless solutions to the global widespread penetration of the mobile phone and mobile apps becoming integrated in everyday life. And service-oriented companies have popped up everywhere eager to capitalize from the onDemand culture of today’s generation. He has disrupted the industry by applying new, breakthrough technology to help make the business more profitable for merchants and more engaging for consumers.

The PayRange solution is designed specifically for this space and brings rich features for merchants so that they

the dollar bill acceptor was introduced. Since that time, the consumer has become increasingly cashless yet 95% of machines still only accept cash – most only accept $1 bills and change – causing a gap between the consumers’ ability to pay and the machines’ ability to accept payment.

PayRange is the world’s leading way to pay machines

While card solutions have been around for 20-years, they have not solved the problem for unattended retail largely due to expenses related to bringing network connections and the cost of processing micro-tickets. Mobile solutions that utilize Near Field Communication (NFC) simply ride on the card infrastructure. Hence, even that approach does not solve the core problems of expensive setup and high transaction processing costs. PayRange has uniquely solved this problem with its patented approach of leveraging the users’ cell phone as the backhaul to the network and aggregating the transactions with a prefunded wallet. Users download an iOS or Android app and preload with a credit card, debit card, Apple Pay, Android pay, or Masterpass. Then, using the App, they magically “swipe” payment to the machine leveraging a Bluetooth connection. A tribute to IoT with PayRange’s cashless pay PayRange believe that the future of the IoT sector is about harnessing the power of “things” beyond just data collection and monitoring. The “things” will be able to unlock features, capabilities, and enriched experiences. Payments will be a central and necessary part of that “unlock”. June 2017 | 41

T

he Internet of Things is accelerating at a crazy speed; according to forecasters there will be around 25 billion devices by the end of 2020, and to encash the massive opportunity of IoT enters thethings.iO. It is one of the simplest enterprise IoT platforms in the market. The company works at the back-end for IoT, collecting, analyzing and visualizing data coming from connected devices. And finally lets companies focus less on the cloud platform and more on the product and sales. The company has been serving various hardware companies since 2014 in three easy ways. Firstly, one can deploy a fully scalable real-time storage solution within hours for a fraction of the cost. Secondly, the company integrates things from multiple sources and protocols in one intuitive dashboard or apps. Thirdly, it is easy to connect the IoT devices with more advanced algorithms to analyze or predict potential failure with the data. The Backbone of thethings.iO Marc Pous is the CEO and the Co-Founder of thethings.iO. Marc originally hails from Barcelona and Munich is his second home. Marc is a member of Internet of Things Council and manages the IoT communities in both Barcelona and Munich. Furthermore, he organizes meet-ups and is also responsible for co-organizing the international event IoT Stars during MWC (Mobile World Congress). Previously he has worked as a researcher and developer at public and private research centers, which are focused on IoT, smart cities and open data fields. He has also worked as a Web Developer. Now he creates IoT products as a hobby, from a connected sofa for a music festival to beer mugs in Munich’s Oktoberfest and Christmas lights that light up when one tweets @thethingsIO. He has earned the nickname of IoT Giant due to his massive stature and efforts towards IoT.

Bringing New Services and Solutions thethings.iO is the IoT platform that collects, analyzes and visualizes data. This allows its customers to monitor and manage their devices in real-time and to get flexible analytic reports. For now, the company provides three types of solutions for IoT, that include; Things Manager, Cloud Code, and Apps Manager. Things Manager mainly collects data and manages devices and products with the most simplistic approach. Whereas the Cloud Code is an algorithm that analyzes data from devices in real time, every hour of every day. Last but not the least, Apps Manager enables third parties to access a subset of data or devices with a mobile app or dashboards. Users can build, drag and drop dashboards in just a few minutes for all the actors from the user’s project. thethings.iO works on custom brand, which means under the URL of the customer and the corporate palette. If needed thethings.iO can work on-premise at its customer's infrastructure. What Makes the Services Unique? Recently, the company has started to help companies to launch their products into the market of several verticals such as connected home, assets tracking and liquid management. thethings.iO is a hardware and connectivity agnostic. Additionally, it is very well integrated with Sigfox, NB-IoT and LoRa plus GPRS and WiFi. The company provides the most simple and innovative enterprise IoT platform. Customers working with the company can start analyzing data after few days of using thethings.iO. However, the company’s main goal is to minimize the total time spent by a customer on analyzing data. company helps customers to build a dashboard within a few hours for any participants of the project. It is very simple to integrate thethings.iO with ERPs and CRMs of the customers. The company thrives on the goal of simplifying the adoption of IoT. Therefore, rather than developing a new interface and tools for the customers, it tries to integrate its product with any CRM such as SAP, Salesforce, Siebel, among others. Rising Challenges Nowadays IoT solution providers are facing a problem, mainly due to the adoption speed of the customers. IoT is not always about the latest technology. It is also a business model that makes or saves money for the concerned company who is implementing the project. Technically, customers are mostly interested in edge computing and security. When it comes to edge computing, it depends on the hardware and the budget of the project and when it comes to security, the company always tries to provide all the knowledge on security that helps to secure an IoT device from the first day. Future that Looks Promising thethings.iO thinks that its customers need to go step by step when it comes to implementing IoT. The first step would be connecting a device. Second is making a deep analysis of the data and third is to make devices to interact with each other. After the third step, the last two steps are applying AI algorithm and integration with CRMs and June 2017 | 43
