Adopting Cloud Technology by Companies: A Boon or a Detriment
loud presents new opportunity around shared resources. Cloud computing is an Internet-based computing well known as ‘on-demand computing’ very useful for storage solutions, provide users and enterprises with various capabilities to store and process data, development, and deployment of services and solutions over the internet. Cloud is promising regarding scalability, agility, and a pay-per-use model, cloud computing is an attractive option for enterprises, the most important ones which cloud provides are regarding “security” like centralized security policies; security infrastructure becomes less expensive. But there is a dark side too as cloud also poses security risks, risks associated with the internet like hacking and malware infections. As a result, the fight for cloud security is harder than ever. As more companies make a move to adopt the cloud, the importance of securing cloud services is at an all-time high. Recently, a research firm Gartner predicted that in 2016, security needs to be at the top of the action plan for companies as they extend their business processes to the cloud. Security measures will include securing data and accessing the security of cloud providers, the research firm said. First of all, companies need to evaluate the existing security measures implemented and finalize what systems and data are in the cloud. Companies should perform an adequate investigation of the cloud service provider before finalizing an agreement. Companies having a global presence should also evaluate the location of the stored data and how the services are implemented to avoid problems with data transfer restrictions and the system’s processing and response time. With enough upfront planning and combining the power of on-premise software and efficiency, scalability and security of the cloud, companies can have the best of both worlds and can substantially reduce the security risk associated with the cloud.

loud computing provides several competitive benefits to today’s startups. It provides the distributive IT computer software and hardware, that saves the prices of the business’s IT infrastructure. This feature is especially helpful for startups as they easily adopt emerging software without making numerous purchases. Business managers ought not to invest a lot in highperformance computers because cloud computing permits access to centralized applications, that don't need to be installed locally. Businesses that migrate to the Cloud are more agile and effective, particularly when they can scale their IT infrastructure.

For Startups, Cloud is Cheaper One of the unsophisticated ideas from the initial days of Cloud computing is that the cloud is cheaper; thus it saves startups considerable amount of cash. Through the Cloud, Startups gain access to great computing power at incredibly low cost and as far as IT infrastructure is concerned, it also allows them to own something. Startups will do nice things with less physical server hardware through virtualization. By 2018, cloud computing market will surpass $200 billion and behind such anticipations one of the major reason is its affordability as 80% of cloud adopters believe that it helps their organization scale back IT prices.

Scalability and Virtualization Cloud resources may be scaled up or down automatically; whereas human intervention is often needed to feature hardware and software in customary environments. The cloud environments are generally virtualized, whereas old settings comprise physical as well as virtualized infrastructure. With scalability and virtualization, you have to simply provision or de-provision resource for your convenience. For example, you can effortlessly add a minimum of 2 servers during a matter of minutes while not essentially reckoning on emails and phone calls. Cloud computing supports the unpredictable cycles of expansions that businesses are going through due to its scalable nature. Businesses Open Up New Channels Through esteemed providers of Cloud computing such as Microsoft, ShowMax and Apple, you’re given the chance of restructuring your business. You can actually reconstitute it to a service-centric business from a product-centric business.
Reliability & Continuity is Improved The Cloud service providers have less period of time than most organizations with internal data centers. Cloud computing will affordably give redundancy sites, facilitating business continuity together with disaster recovery situations. The consequently managed and virtualized setting of the Cloud infrastructure permits higher and improved compliance with data management and privacy rules. In fact, it provides safer remote access to company data and quicker and reliable recovery of data systems and backup. Quality is Improved with the Cloud Moving towards cloud computing means improved quality of IT provision as well as manageability. By using cloud computing, a business will simply be secured into its internal IT department and can effectively reduce dependence on internal IT. As a result, the requirement to give management attention and resources to IT infrastructure will be reduced. And the competitive dynamics of the Cloud to get IT infrastructure which is both efficient and effective will be used by the business. The capability to provision and setting up resources automatically means that substantially cloud services have better manageability.
For example, a business that has completed new channels through the Cloud services is Netflix. Netflix had to mass immense capacities of collections within the Cloud once Netflix started streaming services. By storing the large volumes of files in the Cloud, Netflix has time to figure out how the multitudes might systematically access them. Thus, Moreover, despite all the above-mentioned reasons for Netflix has been able to reinvent HR through the Cloud. adopting cloud computing; one among the foremost reasons for migrating to the cloud is that it is exceptionally powerful. Apart from better analytics, cloud computing Improved Collaboration Within the Cloud Cloud computing is improving collaboration and increasing helps business in accessing data and applications from anywhere, regardless of the device being used. Also, one user productivity too. The Cloud permits users to access must avoid storing confidential business data in mobile and services despite their location or device. IoT, Wearable Computing - Where Everything is Addressable
F
rom a financial perspective I liken that debate to a comparison of renting a car, from any of the national rental companies, versus buying a car - which comes down to how frequently you need it and whether the daily rental meets your particular needs. That debate is further clouded by data residency issues (no pun intended), which may dictate against public cloud for sensitive data.
And as we all should know, not all clouds are the same. AWS and Azure is one shape and size; the private and

Next up in the evolution is the IoT - internet of things - wearable computing - where everything is addressable - and including very time sensitive apps. In a nutshell, cloud is/can be relatively slow; and for any applications employing vast amounts of data (Netflix, Film and TV

The happy news is that from my perspective, the options available to most companies of all sizes has never been better. Connectivity, processing and storage costs will continue to drop. There is no one set solution for companies but current and future technology is such that demands of all types can be met. Big public cloud, small public cloud, private cloud, dedicated, on premise, off premise, etc., high speed, big connectivity can all be accessed and utilized to minimize IT costs. But all solutions must be business based, working from the business need to the IT solution. And all IT solutions should be benchmarked to minimize cost.
J. Mark MacDonald Founder Canada 151 Data Centers Inc.
Lastly, all solutions must be based on rock solid and highly secure and redundant power, connectivity and cooling infrastructure. Grids will go down, not if but when. Mechanical devices, generators, UPS, HVAC will cease to function, not if but when (if maintained properly and replaced appropriately, very rarely). Loss of data is another when, not if. The problem is that it happens infrequently, so consequences are difficult to understand and inertia sets in. People didn’t stop smoking when presented with proof that it would kill them in 50 years – the consequence was too far off and hence of low practical probability. Data loss and outages have low frequency but are hugely impactful; Again, not if but when. Regret is huge – ever lost your laptop, without having a backup?
that this may be a significant contributor to calls for complete IT outsourcing or at least cost reduction. As a solution provider to end clients, this overall confusion can create significant impediments to adoption of best practices – including what should be simple but is not: back-up and disaster recovery. Over the past 25 years (most of the history of the internet), I have served on the Board of numerous companies, public and private, small and large; I can count on one hand the number of board room discussions concerning back-up and DR, or risk mitigation of any type regarding critical data loss.
These events, while infrequent but catastrophic, can be mitigated by best businesses practices which means frequent backup to a highly redundant infrastructure. But risk mitigation culture starts at the top. At Canada151 Data Centers we try to keep a finger on the pulse of all changes in the IT landscape and we are keen observers and participants in the ongoing debate between cloud, private cloud (and all other variations), and dedicated infrastructure.

Are you staying in network secure zone? ne word can sum up the most common strategy for network defense - “boxy.” Building and maintaining a strong perimeter has a long and storied history. Consider a castle with its moat, high walls and drawbridge. That is how most networks are defended. In a box. Currently, the mentality is: “Do you want to protect a new system?” Put it inside the box. “Processing personal information?” Put it inside the box.
O
This evolution started with the rise in mobile usage. Early on, traditional security teams focused efforts on stopping mobile usage. Eventually, they acquiesced and accepted mobile devices, but only those that were “approved.” Ultimately, reason triumphed and mobile is now treated in a more logical fashion. While still four letters, “BYOD” is no longer a bad word. Unfortunately, we are now seeing the same cycle with cloud services.
While the “box” approach was successful in the past, it’s an antiquated model. And, while the conventional approach has been occupied with defending the castle from a ground attack, adversaries have deployed an air assault with the latest modern weapons.
Consumer is the new business
User’s choice Over the past decade, there has been a quiet revolution with how IT systems and services are used within organizations. Fed up with a lack of options, viable solutions and a general disconnect with the business, users have taken matters into their own hands.
Consumer-focused services are making significant inroads into enterprises around the world. It is fairly common to see large volumes of outbound network traffic utilizing services such as Dropbox, Google Apps, Github or any number of other cloud-based applications. In fact, these services have begun to incorporate features and functionality specifically targeted to the size and scope of various business operations. Think of this as a “bottom-up” approach. It is a sign that users in organizations are pushing technology adoption just as much - if not more - than a traditional “top-down” approach. Overall, this should be seen as a positive. The shift is now aligning IT with the actual focus of the organization. It is a move toward technology that works in the “real world,” instead of simply looking good “on paper.” However, it’s not all unicorns and rainbows.
Crumbling walls While productivity might be up, it is extremely difficult to maintain a strong perimeter around this new blend of traditional, mobile and cloud infrastructure. There action to this is: “Then why try? Isn’t there a better approach?” This response is rational, but not the sentiment of a vast majority of the security industry. Just as with mobile adoption, the common security response to cloud services is to attempt to block user’s access and, instead, guide them toward an “approved” (and typically less usable) server. That isn’t embracing reality and, quite simply, is no longer feasible.

The architecture diagram for current networks no longer fits cleanly into a simple box. Trying to wedge it into one is counterproductive and can lead to frustration among employees. It is imperative to accept the fact that the perimeter as it has been known is now gone. Which leads to the core of the issue- what strategies can be adopted to defend today’s networks?
CXO Standpoint
First, it is important to understand that traditional controls still have a place in modern defense. There is a need for firewalls, intrusion prevention, anti-malware, filtering, etc. These traditional elements serve as a strong component, but they play a smaller role and cannot be considered the endall, be-all of security. Instead of focusing on individual components of the network, it should be viewed according to the way specific data flows.
systems are controlled by the enterprise, some are not. With this view, the real challenge comes to the forefront - how can the safety of orders (items purchased, quantities, shipping info, etc.) and processing data be ensured by at least three different entities? In addition, payment information resides on at least two systems. How does that affect Payment Card Industry compliance? This is the level where security should be applied - and it must be acted upon holistically.
Security in isolation
Next steps
Level up
Take a typical e-commerce transaction, for example: In a traditional approach, each of these systems would reside in relative isolation. First, there must be a firewall on the site and anti-malware so it is “secure.” Second, the shopping cart is delivered to the user via HTTPS so it is “secure.” Third, the payment information is encrypted, thus it is “secure.” Finally, the shipping system is only internal so it is “secure” through access control. While none of these controls are bad, they do not take into account the realities of today’s networks. Now, shopping carts are provided via PaaS, payments are provided via SaaS ans all shipping is done through a third-party API. These providers inherently change over time creating more variables and avenues for breaches.
Data flow In addition to adding basic security to each system or service, it is critical to examine how data flows. When a high-level view of data flow is incorporated into the typical e-commerce transaction, the following occurs: It is immediately apparent that there is a variety of information shared across multiple systems. Some of the
The top priority for security must be monitoring. It is clear that controlling every element of the network can be overwhelming. With the variety of services, endpoints and connections, the aforementioned “box” model has been demolished. Thus, the traditional perimeter is gone. What takes place in networks requires more transparency to read and react accordingly. A modern monitoring practice not only pulls in log data from network devices and application servers (as has traditionally occurred), but also logs and reports from IaaS, PaaS, SaaS and mobile systems. This in itself cteates a new challenge with an immense amount of diverse data needing to be processed. Fortunately, “big data” analytics can be applied to resolve this issue. There is very little value in denying where network infrastructure design, and access, is headed. The soundest strategy is to welcome this reality and work to increase security of the current network to focus on monitoring. It is essential to be cognizant of data workflows within the overall enterprise. Once that is established, taking steps to protect data, regardless of where it is stored and processed, is far less daunting. NOVEMBER 2016|

Why Cloud to Rule the Future? C
loud Computing has surprised us by its vast uses and it is getting bigger and bigger. Take a few examples- Unlimited storage of the emails for infinite time, 120 hours of videos every minute are getting uploaded on YouTube, and to support new smartphones, a server gets activated every 10 seconds and these are just a few uses of Cloud Computing. The future has a great promise when it comes to the cloud. No doubt, cloud computing has taken off in the recent years with business applications and new innovations. But knowing where will be the cloud computing by the end of the decade can be very useful to the organizations. Cloud computing is a kind of computer hard drive with a difference of storing and accessing data over the internet. When the data is stored on the hard drive, it’s called a local storage and computing. How will cloud computing evolve? And how will it affect the future? Are some of the questions an organization aims to find out the answers to. Here are some predictions for the companies that look to cloud computing being cost-effective in a long-term. More Application Availability in the Cloud It’s estimated that by the end of 2020, more than a quarter of all applications will be available on the cloud. More than 58 percent of the companies spend about 10 percent of their annual budget on the cloud, while about 56 percent of the companies think cloud to be a strategic differentiator. As researchers predicted, there will be about 8.2 billion active

NOVEMBER 2016|
mobile devices by the end of the decade with more and more applications to follow. Applications will be made available on the cloud to build and deploy applications that would lead to better technology and faster response time. Migration to Private Clouds with More Education Companies are starting to know the differences between public, private and hybrid cloud computing. Companies opting to stay with the shared clouds will have the risk of the slower performance and more security threats, which would result in the migration to private clouds in the future. Increased Hybrid Cloud Computing Some industry leader predicts that about 50 percent of the companies will have hybrid clouds by 2017. As we see a number of companies are adopting cloud, we see CIOs are crafting new and well though strategies, which includes hybrid cloud. If it was possible, then everything available in the businesses would have moved to the cloud because of today’s complex environment. Which is why hybrid gives more reasons for businesses like on and off premises which allow organizations to achieve the highest performance of on-premises solutions and also cloud business model’s management convenience. Increased Growth of Cloud in the Market The cloud has been developing over the years and will be accelerating globally in the future. Enterprises have been relying on the cloud to market, develop, and manage supply chains, sell products and more. Industry experts expect
Futurista
cloud adoption to hit USD 250 billion by 2017. They also expect that the worldwide SaaS (Software as a Service) would grow at an outstanding rate of 20.2 percent every year. With the kind of growth SaaS is promising; it will not be surprising to say that companies will be looking for Cloud Computing as a service. Increased Cloud Development More development will be going to the cloud. As cloud computing is evolving, we can expect more and more developers going towards the cloud development. An 85 percent of the new applications are being built with the cloud in mind, which expect to major resources going towards the cloud development. Companies can expect an increase in the third party, commercial and enterprise developers and API exchanges. Cloud development will also give us more reasons to adopt it. More Innovation Due to Cloud The cloud space has given way to better products, services, and innovation due to increased competition. The cloud will make the traditional phenomenon that refers to how companies required to become like the competitors in order to achieve high mainstream success. With the kind of
growth and innovation, the cloud has given to the industry so far, and it would be easy to say that more innovation will be made due to the cloud. End of Traditional Infrastructure Due to the evolving features of the cloud, software can be expected to almost completely stay away from hardware, since many companies are starting to search many applications available online by eliminating the need to keep buying new servers. Companies can expect software applications to get more complex and larger for scalability. The emphasis will be mostly on modular software since applications tend to get larger. The modular software will require a novel approach to the technology by saying goodbye to the traditional infrastructure. The Cloud Computing is leading the industry towards the revolution and only those companies will survive who will adopt the cloud computing, ultimately Cloud will be ruling the future.

Integral Networks: We are your IT Department
T
he importance of IT services required by business centers cannot be undermined. Every business or company has some information technology needs, influenced by what the company does, the tools used, and the size of the company. Outsourcing I.T services is not only less expensive regarding operational costs and costs associated with training or certifying IT staff, but companies also enjoy round the clock tech services either by phone or through remote computer access from the service provider. Many smaller businesses go with outsourcing their IT support because it is cheaper than employing a full-time IT staff. Still, at the opposite end of the spectrum, several large-scale organizations, with permanent IT units, often strive to focus on the bigger picture of IT strategy as their internal resources are overwhelmed by routine, day-to-day activities. Integral Networks understands the modern IT needs of businesses. Their vast knowledge of IT, coupled with an amazing team of highly qualified individuals provide everyday solutions and best in class services - removing every issue in an organization and adding back the comfort in knowing the most important part of the company is being well maintained and secure.

IoT Business Will Boost The Economy In The Next Decades -By José Antônio Scodiero, Director & Founding Partner of FAST COMPANY BRAZIL
T
he world of the Internet of Things promises to be the main engine of the global economy in the next years. In developing countries, such as Brazil, the opportunities will be even bigger. Considering the size of the local market and the pressing need that Brazil has in increasing the innovation rhythm, technology usage and development, the country can already be seen as a big global player by companies from this sector. In this moment, the more accurate motto for companies that want to act or are acting in Brazil is “Innovate or Die.” After a cycle of more than 10 years of continuous growth, that put the country in evidence on the global landscape as part of the select group of so-called BRICs (Brasil, Russia, India and China) and that stressed even more its leadership in Latin America, Brazil is now entering, in the past two years, a moment of political tension that has reflected directly in the economy. The moment now is of reviewing and restructuring. But in spite of the perception of some foreign executives and entrepreneurs that this is not a good time to invest in the country, it is clear that Brazil had a virtuous cycle of many years and reached a higher level. All this indicates that, for sure, not all is lost. Far from it. The time is for opportunities. With the stabilization of the smartphone market, there’s a great potential for the technology industry - especially in the semiconductors area - in business

And the solutions to problems from different countries can only be found locally.

In the technology world, the innovation chain has inverted itself recently, with the large domain of big multinational companies giving space to startups and new entrepreneurs. This movement creates a pulverization of opportunities. It is no longer something Investing in the right time and in the concentrated, in the domain of few big players like it used to be. There is right moment Despite the low participation of Brazil space for companies from outside the country and also for the appearance of in the semiconductors industry, the country has a great potential to use the new local players that can learn and develop their own systems and foment Internet of Things and to develop in this sector. It is a field in which no one the industry. has the advantage yet: we are, The technology giants, that lost a wave theoretically, in the same level as United States and China. they don’t miss out on the opportunities that the IoT segment will bring. There are several examples in this direction and IBM is one of them, since its announcement, in December of 2015, to return to the consumer electronics market, ten years after selling its computer division to the Chinese Lenovo. The problem is that there are a lot of companies, big and small, repeating the same strategies in the search of its own space in the technology market. This needs to change. The motto “Innovate or Die” also needs to be applied in the planning. IoT as a transforming agent of an economy As well as in great transformations of the past, the revolution caused by IoT will change the entire landscape of the career scenario. It is estimated that in time, it will be possible to see 20 to 30 million jobs migrate, and some functions might disappear, thanks to robotics, intelligent machines and artificial intelligence (AI), that will infiltrate in new corporate areas and automate the positions that are
As an entrepreneur, he founded lots of startup companies since the 90’s, having created his first company when he was only 24 years old. In 2009 he founded Fast Company Brazil, with the objective of catapulting multinational organizations, from sectors like digital technology, semiconductors and software that are seeking to install subsidiaries in the Brazilian and Latin American markets. In 2010 he obtained the certification of Corporate Governance from the Brazilian Institute of Corporate Governance (IBGC) and started acting as a consulting advisor in companies in 2011. In 2012, he became president of the task force of semiconductors of AMCHAM - American Chamber for Brazil and USA. Still in 2012, Scodiero was also elected Director of SBMICRO - Brazilian Society of Microelectronics, where he remains until the end of 2016. repetitive and transitional. But what it seems like bad news is in fact a readaptation, from work stations focused on operational to opportunities in areas that demands data analysis, ability to solve problems, think creatively, innovate and work within a team. Nothing too distant from the profile that today is comprehended as a good professional. It is an evolutionary movement, driven by technology. If the job openings in operational work stations tend to drop, the opportunities to professionals that seek qualification and even reinvention will grow a lot. It is a market that, according to IDC, will grow about US$1, 7 trillion until 2020. This amount needs, and will be, shared among the professionals that manage to keep up with the demands of the market.

A Glimpse into the Era of
Cloud
Computing
T
oday, much like electricity, one can easily access any kind of information through internet whenever they need. All this became possible just because of cloud computing. This new cost-effective as well as an environment friendly methodology for both users as well as service providers is a win-win solution. Irrespective of the core competency of one’s business, Information Technology (IT) is becoming ubiquitous. But, queries on the acquisition and management of IT systems still baffle several business owners. This newest methodology Cloud Computing has made their lives more comfortable and easier by enabling the user to access IT solutions remotely whenever required. Clearance of the Cloud Being an Internet-based computing solution, Cloud, on demand denotes a set of shared resources, software and information provided to computer devices. Over the network, information tasks are assigned through a combination of connections, service and software in the cloud. This on-demand approach to IT resources can be laid down for use with infrastructure, applications or platforms. Also, customers can avail fixed plans, by which there is a flat fee and their data center is managed by the company or they can go for a variable plan where on virtual machines they can access the solutions online and pay per use. Reducing the energy costs for running and cooling hardware, there is a need for reduction in hardware components as an

incidental benefit in various companies. Furthermore, as this process reduces carbon dioxide emissions, it is more eco-friendly. Universal Acceptance Over the next five years, International Data Corporation (IDC) is expecting global spending on IT cloud services to grow almost threefold. And the pace with which expenditure is done on cloud computing will be accelerated, capturing 25% of the growth than in the earlier years. The cloud market is estimated to grow up to 1 billion dollars in India. Especially, concept of cloud is favorable for the small as well as medium enterprises as tremendous cost cutting in IT is enabled through this. Today, it has seen demand from the Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) segment, from online media companies, trading companies and manufacturing companies. This estimates that SaaS (software-as-a-service) market to grow by 35% from the current million dollars. The IaaS (Infrastructure-as-aService) market is at 3-4 million dollars currently and is expected to grow with 50-60% growth rate. Although different studies give different estimates, but this will be the upcoming market trend. Also, it is believed that this concept will spread across segments. As this shared computing resource is percolating to healthcare industries, banking, BPO and finance segments while startups and SMEs are becoming aggressive about it.

Accruing BeneďŹ ts Cloud computing provides various advantages to its users. Firstly, it helps in conserving energy so it is eco-friendly. It minimizes the expenditure on IT infrastructure and also it beneďŹ ts cost economy and resources. Additionally, pooling of resources is leading to load balancing, superior performance and entire use of server capacity. Accessing solutions remotely indicate that the user can be found anywhere. These processes of remote access help in strengthening the security and monitoring systems. Since, virtual memory systems are running simultaneously, breakdown does not affect operations as service providers stack multiple virtual machines. Also, it enables the IT head to keep focus on strategies that are aligning IT usage to company requirements. Way Forward Over the years, cloud computing has given a paradigm shift from the way IT has been used till now. Its nascent stages
are still prevailing, but, the service providers are optimistic based on their own experience. For example, in May 2008, NetMagic within 8 to 9 months of launching Cloud 1.0 acquired 100 customers. And in next year by September 2009, the company experienced 400% growth by launching their Cloud 2.0 virtual machine model. According to the resources, cloud computing contributes 10% of NetMagic’s revenues to the tune of about 4 to 5 million dollars. In addition to building its own products, CA Technologies formerly known as Computer Associates International has also acquired several companies including NetQoS, Oblicore and 3Tera to enter into new and adjacent markets, substantially upgrading existing offerings to its clients. This segment is not only generating substantial interest amongst users and service providers but also these are the examples of IT companies wanting to come on board the cloud wagon. Alike as this presents each with a viable solution to their business needs. Indeed, cloud computing promises to be the next big thing in IT.
