GLASS INDUSTRY: OPPORTUNITIES IN A VIAL

H

alfway through the year 2020 and all that we can talk about is how COVID-19, the pandemic, has changed our lives now and forever. Days and lives have been reduced to numbers. The world right now has a negative shroud over it with people battling a pandemic, distrust, fake news, recession and more, all of them, every single day. However, the human spirit and the will to live and survive are hard to beat. So, amongst all the negatives, it is not hard to come across moments that spark joy and hope. An increasing recovery rate, increased level of awareness, acceptance of the new ways of working, and hope that there will be a cure soon has raised the spirits. While most of the industries are now ďŹ nding a way to work around the pandemic, there are a few that are working in the middle of the storm and trying to contain it. The Pharma industry, coincidentally, has a huge target to meet and an enemy to defeat, at all costs. As the race to develop the vaccine for the novel Coronavirus gains momentum, there is another industry waiting patiently and preparing itself for a huge task. The task is that of making sure that the medicine

reaches the people in tiny glasses of hope and the industry is the Glass Industry.

products after intensive research that is high on quality and trusted by customers all across the world.

Vials, as they are known as, manufactured by the Glass industry are used to store medications and also scientific samples. Vials can be of many types; the most common ones being used are the tests tube-like but flat-based sample vials and the vials that store the medicine or medical vials. As per reports, every year, around 50 billion glass containers are used for medical purposes of which around 20 billion are medical vials.

Our Special Feature is on Isra Glass and its Founder Moiz Arsiwala, who brings unique collection of masterfully crafted decorative glass art to India.

As the need to test and test again to contain the pandemic increases so does the requirement of sample vials. And once the vaccines are in place, the industry will be facing an uphill task to supply the vials for the same. What is more important that these vials are not just made out of regular and less expensive soda-lime glass, but need borosilicate glass for manufacturing. Borosilicate glass is chemically stable, corrosionresistant, withstand high as well as low temperature, and also safer when it comes to being handled during transportation. However, right now, it makes up only 10% of the total glass production in the world. So herein lies the first challenge for the industry, which is to increase production to meet the demand. The pandemic has provided the industry with a huge opportunity which the companies would like to encash not just for financial benefits, but for the fact that their work will be saving millions of lives. In this issue of Insights Success, we present "The 10 Most Admired Companies in the Glass Industry" which are moulding glass in various forms around us including medical vials.

We also present Fancy Glass Factory, one of the pioneers in the field of glass supply, designs and solutions, and a one-stop-shop for all glass needs; and Shamvik Glass Tech Private Limited, a company that has carved a niche in the glass industry, for giving way to the refined technology that has been used to manufacture glass containers in India for over four decades. In an Interview, Rajesh Khosla, President and CEO, AGI Glaspac (An SBU of HSIL Ltd) talks about the glass industry and its various aspects. A few other companies worth mentioning are Suyog Glass Industries, Haldyn Glass Gujarat Limited, Magic Glass Pvt. Ltd, Bhatia Glass Tuff Pvt. Ltd and Ozone Glass. Do go through our in-house articles Exploring the Wide Uses of Glass in Interior Design and Scoping Through the Glass Industry 4.0.In a CXO article, Mr. Arun Verma, Regional Director, AAF- EEMEA, CIS & SAARC countries, shares his views on ‘Indoor Air Quality – A Rising Concern’. lass is the most natural and healthy material used in the packaging industry. Its superior properties arise from its naturalness i.e. sand, that has made it indispensable for humanity for thousands of years. Glass that increases the trust in the food, and beverages it holds, by not reacting with them, is a packaging material that best deserves to be called a ‘healthy packaging’. Over the last 47 years AGI glaspac, a leading glass container manufacturer, is engaged in the manufacturing of highquality glass containers. It efficiently meets the stringent and demanding quality standards for the packaging needs of various industries including Food, Pharmaceuticals, Soft Drinks, Spirits, Beer, Wine, and other industries. AGI caters to at least 20 percent of the glass container demand in the industry. While its priority is the domestic market, AGI, nevertheless, has its global footprints in areas like North America, Europe, Africa, Canada, and APAC regions as well. AGI glaspac, the packaging products division of HSIL Limited, was established in 1972 with a capacity of 80 tonnes/day (TPD). In 1981, HSIL Ltd. acquired AGI and upgraded the furnace capacity to 180 TPD. In 1996, AGI achieved its first ISO 9000 certification. In 2000, the first new furnace (F-2) colouring was added, which increased the capacity to 450 TPD. In 2004, the second new furnace (F-3) was added to raise the capacity to 600 TPD. In 2009, a new greenfield plant was started at Bhongir with the third new furnace (F-4) of capacity 500 TPD, which raised the total capacity to 1100 TPD. In 2011, AGI exported its first consignment. In 2012, the fourth new furnace (F-5) was added, which increased the capacity from 1100 TPD to 1600 TPD with a colouring forehearth. Remarkably, AGI glaspac is the largest container glass manufacturing facility at a single location in Asia. In 2016, electrostatic preciptators were installed to reduce SOX, NOX, and CO2. In 2017, AGI

realise the final packaging product. Our focus is not only on quality but also on introducing new products to the market, quickly. AGI glaspac container glasses range from 5ml to 4000ml. We manufacture beer bottles, liquor bottles, wine bottles, pharma bottles, soft drink bottles, food jars/bottles in any size, shape, and colour. We deliver our products across segments like beer, chemicals, food, coffee, liquor, pharma, soft drinks, beverages, wine, and water bottles, which are our primary target audience. We also have our retail segment, which is only for the B2C segment with a brand called “Greendrop Glassware,” where we sell our bottles to eCommerce sites like Amazon, Flipkart, Snapdeal, etc., It has two state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities, one in Hyderabad and the other at Bhongir (Telangana). Both the plants are strategically located in South-central India. The key raw materials are available in abundance and the shipping of finished goods by road, rail, as well as by sea (through ICD), is extremely cost-effective. AGI melts 1600+ tonnes of glass per day. We have R&D, machine-building, and business excellence capabilities to maximize productivity. Our clients include ABInBev, Bira91, UB Group, Avantor, Thermofisher, Dr Reddy, GSK, Pfizer, Diageo, and Pepsico. IS: How did you overcome the downturns on your way. When I joined AGI glaspac, I tried to understand the business for 2-3 weeks. After that, I saw a great opportunity in this business both on horizontal and vertical scales. There seems to be an opportunity in different parts of India and abroad. In AGI glaspac, we had to introduce a lot of value-added services to revolutionise the glass market. IS: How has the glass industry progressed in 2019 compared to the past five years? INSIGHTS SUCCESS | 17

ne of the greatest distinctions between traditional manufacturing automation and Industry 4.0 is the immense rise in intelligent contact – between computer and workpiece, between person and computer, between software and machine – and, of course, between system and machine. The entire value-creation chain is incorporated into this dynamic data exchange in the field of Industry 4.0 and the Internet of Things – gradually even in the flat glass industry. If cutting systems and buffers, processing centers, and modern production lines are linked across boards via software systems, sensors, actuators, and processors, this extends well beyond the keyword ‘automation.’ Different communication systems are growing rapidly and complementing each other. In this way, the purely

barcode-based PDC (plant data collection), already standard in wellnetworked production environments in the at glass industry, is enriched with machine data: electronic intelligence in tiny components connects the real world made of steel with the digital world. The share of data supplied by machines is increasingly rapid and will eventually complement manual systems. However, it is likely to replace them in the long run. The smart industry requires uniďŹ ed data systems that integrate computer data with data from other sources to making it available, whether for collecting and analyzing information or for managing production management and maintenance cycles. Improving the provision of real-time information by the convergence of various systems produces highly complex distribution networks that are gradually coordinated. None of these innovations are very fresh in the process, however: Industry 4.0 is created by networking them through boards. The Brief Industry 4.0 is a step in the cyber world. The machinery turns into smart machines that control themselves, build networks, and communicate continuously, i.e. exchanges data. In this continuous exchange, machine systems can learn from and avoid mistakes in the future. During the actual process, production improves. A hundred percent value chain is optimized. The smart system can provide increased transparency and greater security in the creation of good quality products 2020, VOLUME - 07, ISSUE - 02

through the networking of data between the various production routines, whether it is a smart factory or smart glass. The Doubts in Mind The main reason for skepticism for glass automation is that while large dimensions and amounts of glass are produced, it does not necessarily constitute a mass product. Today, glass is also pretty smart because multifunctional glass can make light and shade distinctive, generate energy and control temperatures. Tempered glass for smartphones and touch-screens is more demanded than ever in communications and consumer electronics. For example, thermally prestressed and functional lenses require precise techniques, continuous quality controls, and robust reproductive processes. Machine to Machine Talk Companies may use and analyze the machine-to-machine talking system in development to capture, store, and collect data from various sensors, scanners, computers, and software systems in a specific storage container. For this function, the information is enriched with metadata and stored in the central data collection. The result is a comprehensive information system for logging and realtime use of all communications in the production chain with regard to order, batch, or individual lite. Intelligent interfaces In Industry 4.0 environments, the communication networks work with two-way interfaces that are created in cooperation with leading machine manufacturers by software providers. Information from the state-of-the-art glass processing equipment, equipped with electronic components, is read and continuously monitored through the use of smart software. An intelligent buffer at different points, an isolated glass line, and a complete plant node worth evaluation can be made with A+W

systems, or orders can be sent either from the maker to the machine, or the control panels and analysis tools from the machine. This improves production efficiency and offers valuable information to be used by A+W IoT data platforms. The Human Element in the Smart Factory Self-learning cannot be compared to automatic, and talking rationalization would be wrong. We’ll see new job profiles emerge in the future — jobs that will play important roles and many still await creation. Professionals would be needed to be trained and supported in own countries. Mathematics, IT, science, and technology, in particular at school, need to be made more attractive and university admission criteria must be reduced. Changes in vocational training can be achieved through work-oriented methods such as mobile e-learning (with PDAs and smartphones) or by means of a company wiki that can be collected, shared, and edited actively by all staff. On-the-job learning is understood as a continuing, important process. The information exchange between workpiece, system technology, and optimization software is now very complex. The result of this is high productivity, material efficiency, and quality – an important service of float producers, which provide their customers with this information on the stock. The process described is more than just automation, as we know it: Glass Industry 4.0 is composed only of intelligent networking and communication of participating systems. Most glass companies have understood this and are investing in an intentional and careful way.

These high temperatures and pressure might be extreme, but it helps glass to come out in its glorious form. Similar is the story of Glass Artist, Moiz Arsiwala who achieved his dreams after going through life’s refinery. He is what the world describes as a creative person ambitious, experimenter, learner, risk taker, rule-breaker and above all hard worker.

The Norman and Gothic Cathedrals in Europe used stained glasses as a major architectural and decorative element to accentuate the beauty of these Cathedrals. Glass from Murano, Venetia, known as just Venetian Glass, is a result of years of continuous experiments, refinements and defines glass in its full glory. The early 19th century saw the old art glass movement at its peak with great Studios or Ateliers like Tiffany, Lalique, Daum and Galle taking it to new levels.

And like many artists, he too has an inspiration or muse – Glass. Moiz’s love for glass started as a child. His family was associated with glass and it works for 85 years in Mumbai. A change of place brought a change in lives. They shifted to Bangalore and his father left the ancestral work. Moiz, who had developed a fascination with glass, kept asking his father to start afresh, but his father insisted on him having a formal education first.

lass, though fragile is fascinating to look at! History of glass-making dates back to the ancient Mesopotamia, some 3600 years ago. It was then extensively popularized and developed in Egypt and Assyria as a decorative and functional element. It was used to make beads, jewellery, and fine dining pieces and more. In the middle ages, the art of using glass or Glass Art took new shape.

per his father’s wish, or choose glass art as per his wish, Moiz did sit for several interviews. But deep inside, he knew, he was not going to work under anyone. He was meant to lead, create, innovate, try, experiment, and was sure to work hard for it. His perseverance won over his father who agreed but suggested him to get some experience first. Moiz approached a school in Istanbul, Turkey which was going to have a course in Glass Sculpting by Vladimir Klein. Thus, life took an interesting turn for him. Istanbul – An Artist’s Delight Moiz describes Istanbul as a city of art and a place which gave him life’s best experience. He took all that the city had to offer. He learnt the techniques of seeing the glass differently, working on it differently, have a keen eye on the perfection of the final finishing and more. His first sculpture was a Qibla inspired from Al Jame Al Azhar Masjid in Cairo, Egypt (which coincidentally is the first masjid to be made in Cairo), and wished to present it to His Holiness – Late Dr Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin Saheb, TUS. And he did it, the piece was presented and in return, he was bestowed with a lifetime of blessings, which Moiz says, “I can feel and experience on a daily basis.”

He then joined a Glass Industry in Nagpur to learn the tricks and the trade and whatever he could about general glass and how the glass system in general, functions. Yet, that was not what he wanted to do eventually. Moiz adds, “I wanted to do something different, and something which I would enjoy working on.”

realize their goal and dreams. For Moiz, the word describes the culmination point of his journey so far. All his hard work, learning, passion, transpired into Isra Glass, his own company, his baby! Initially, he just started by taking orders of any type of glass, got the job done from other vendors, and supplied the glass. But he wanted to do something more, something different. The skill which he had learnt in Istanbul, was not getting utilized in this kind of market. He says, “I guess there was no place for art, and I realized people don’t appreciate art, because good glass art, is expensive, and people would not spend on glass art just for keeping in a showcase.” After a few months, he came across a material which was solid glass pillars and columns, and it immediately struck him, that this material is fancy, it is artistic, and it has a utility. While his well-wishers advised him to abstain from trying something different, Moiz wanted to give it a try. A simple hand machine, small go-down and lots of self-belief saw him cut the solid glass pillar and transform it into a piece of art. He went to shops of other glass dealers, informed them, and promoted this customization and artistry. Word spread, the popularity of the art increased, and Isra was flooded with orders. Moiz now needed hands, to cope up to fulfil of same day and 24hour delivery commitment. He then started training a team and showed them the quality of the end result which must be achieved. Slowly and steadily, Moiz and Isra Glass had found their ground. The Exclusive Products Isra Glass has five products under its brand. • Vetropole Glass Pillars: Beautiful, decorative glass pillars used mainly as dividers or room partitions in homes. There is actually a wait list for the work I carry out since each art piece is created differently.” The Industry – Challenges and Promises Moiz believes that one must enter an industry with full conviction and not as a half-hearted attempt. His business is defined by his passion and it pains him to see people being in the Glass Industry just for the sake of it. They have no knowledge of glass and are dependent on others for surviving. This hurts the overall market most, since such businesses don’t value the art, and just sell glass art as a product. As long as their other mainstream sales are ticking, they sell glass art at an averaged out price, which most of the times is under cost for mainstream glass businesses. Moiz says, “Business should maintain, continue and expand in their mainstream businesses, or have an ethical way of valuing the art, by doing a thorough research of what the art demands, and how it would be valued in the eyes of the customer.” And this is exactly what he advises the young in the business. He tells them that business is very satisfying, and even more satisfying if performed with utmost sincerity, being passionate about the product you are trading with, and ethics. He reminds them, “Do not get attracted to short term gains. They are short term for a reason. The slower you grow; the stronger will be the foundation.” He also shares his experience as an entrepreneur. He feels that challenges are part of the journey for any Entrepreneur. challenges. But as an Entrepreneur there is a roleplay in every department. The lesser one depends on others, the more involved one will be, and the more involved one is, the more one can overcome challenges. Crafting the Future Roads Moiz’s aim is to provide good quality glass solutions in Hotels and resorts, with regards to either Vetropole, or the Luminorra LED Mirrors. His eventual goal is to go global by 2020. Isra Glass is already exporting occasionally to countries like Australia, UAE, Africa, etc. and he would like to streamline the sales and communication channel and venture out more. Moiz prefers doing business being connected to his end clientele. Looking forward to the future, he adds, “I don’t want to drastically expand in a way where I would be dependent on others to attend to my clients. Hence, I keep looking out for great tools, and automation machines to enhance the quality of workmanship and shorten delivery time, so that I would get time to attend my clients, and more time creating and innovating too.”

INDOOR AIR QUALITY

A RISING CONCERN

A

ir is essential for life, and the quality of that air is critical for the well-being of living organisms on the planet. At any given moment, the air surrounding us and filling our lungs contain billions of particles too small to be seen through the naked eye, but powerful enough to impact our health, the operation of equipment and instruments, and manufacturing processes. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that the air indoors can be up to 100 times more polluted than the air outside. The leading cause of poor indoor air quality is a lack of proper air filtration, according to the American Medical Association. American Air Filter, the world leader in air filtration solutions, is bringing clean air to life through unmatched expertise and innovation. Indoor Air Quality refers to the air quality within the buildings and structures and is related to health and comfort of building occupants. Understanding and controlling the common pollutants indoors can help reduce the risk of indoor health concerns. Proper air filtration and air cleaning are integral to improve IAQ. Outdoor air used for ventilation in buildings and structures contains various contaminants. These are particulate matter (some are biological in origin), gases and vapours. The main source of these contaminants is either outdoors, indoors (building components, occupants and occupant activities), or both outdoors and indoors. A proper filtration selection is helpful in removing these contaminants from the air, outdoor or in recirculation.

commercial facilities commonly use particulate filters in the air handling units, it is observed that most of the installations have single-stage washable filters in use. The lab test results prove that these filters are not efficient enough to address the challenge of particulate and gaseous contaminants. Gaseous contaminants originate from a variety of sources, such as automotive exhaust and chemical off-gassing of new furnishings, paints, etc. Commercial facilities face a unique challenge in combating gases from various occupant activities, building operating equipment, and maintenance areas, as well as airborne particulate from renovations and construction. Depending on the concentration of gaseous contaminants a proper solution using carbon filters must be applied in the AHU to combat such challenges. Few of the other applications needing carbon filters are specific to requirements of odour control like gymnasiums, science classes, and cafeterias. The world’s leading health-related organizations consider PM10, PM2.5, and PM1 fine dust fractions as the most important and dangerous for humans. Particles with an aerodynamic diameter of: • 10-micron (ePM10) deposit in the nose and pharynx of the human respiratory system • 2.5-micron (ePM2.5) are small enough to reach the human lung and deposit in the bronchia • 1micron (ePM1) or smaller are small enough to find their way through the cell membranes of the alveoli into the human bloodstream and cause life-threatening diseases

In commercial facilities, controlling airborne pollutants is necessary to maintain a comfortable, healthy, and odourfree environment. These air pollutants are inversely related to occupant health so maintaining proper IAQ levels becomes a primary concern. Poor IAQ ranks as one of the top five environmental risks to occupant health. While most

Expert Talk Some of the trends leading to accelerated concern over IAQ are: • People are moving into cities in unparalleled numbers • World Health Organization (WHO) reports indicate that air pollution levels are rising in all urban areas, worldwide • WHO, 2015: “air pollution around the world is increasing at an alarming rate. Virtually all cities in developing nations, and more than half in richer nations, are blighted by unhealthy air.” • Approx. 7bn people will live in cities around the world by 2050 • WHO: “More than 2bn children now live in places where air pollution exceeds WHO limits.” • A recent study in the UK showed more than 2000 schools (50,000 pupils) and more than 1000 nurseries (47,000 infants) are exposed to dangerously high levels of air pollution. • A study of data from 74 cities in China concluded 31% of deaths over a 3year period were related to air pollution, Nanjing University, South China Post. Some facts about India: • While air pollution is a global issue, WHO states that only one in ten people on Earth breathes safe air – in India, the situation is worse for both human and climate health • According to WHO, India has the world's highest death rate from chronic respiratory diseases and asthmas • As per a WHO survey of 1,650 world cities, the air quality in Delhi is the worst of any major city in the world • As per the 2019 World Air Quality Report by IQAir AirVisual, 14 of the 20 world’s most polluted cities are in India. (Source: QuickTake by Bloomberg) • Joint research by Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India stated that: - “4 lakh deaths in India in 2017 were due to air pollution, which included 6.7 lakh deaths due to outdoor particulate matter air pollution and 4.8 lakh deaths due to household air pollution.” - “With 18% of the global population, India suffered 26% of premature mortality and health loss attributable to air pollution globally.” How do we reduce urban pollution? • Industry: Cleaner processes, Improved Technologies, Reduced Emissions • Transportation: Cleaner technology, Electric Vehicles, Fewer Vehicles

lass is a peculiar product. It provides almost infinite ability to convert space both functionally and aesthetically. And with the recent technical development, it has further expanded possibilities. Although glazing can often be thought of as a solely functional feature of architecture and building, it often plays an important role in interior design. Understanding the advantages provided to designers by glass requires at least a clear understanding of the essence of the glazing in the structural architecture. The best artists work on architectural glass projects and know how to find a balance between their ideas and the glazing at their fingertips. Inside Out Although interior design is based on the internal atmosphere of a room or building, this does not mean that designers should feel confined to aesthetics that are merely manmade, modern, or architectural. One of the great advantages of glass in interior design is that it provides an opportunity to welcome the outside world. Inviting the outside does not inherently provide any comprehensive perspective, but to look at it in a different way, the glass features allow the interior designs to draw on the outside world as a visual stimulus. The designers, in effect, have a sense of movement, providing a seamless connection between the interior and the exterior. 42 | INSIGHTS SUCCESS

By providing a view of anything like a pool, a hillside, or another natural item in an outdoor environment, glass elements may enhance designs that draw from nature by providing a realistic view of their inspirations. The same idea also applies to urban environments; views of anything from skyscrapers to townhouses can be used to galvanize new interior aesthetics. Plenty of Natural Light For lighting in general being an important part of interior design, the use of natural light is one of the main advantages that glass elements bring to the table. Through filling an interior room with sunshine, glazing will turn a room from one that only looks amazing to one that makes us feel amazing. Especially when it comes to central and functional rooms and spaces such as kitchens, dining areas or bathrooms, spaces that are used often and regularly during the day. In fact, one of the most important of these is the impact that daylight has on color perception. For a style that aims to capture ‘real color,’ natural light is also used as the primary source of lighting. Eliminate Practical Restrictions Modern glass features such as sliding doors and even roof and floor panels can be used as access points when designing a room that requires either internal or external access, as well as providing the abovementioned benefits of natural light. It ensures that VOLUME - 07, ISSUE - 02, 2020

designers do not have to choose between an uninhibited light source and an entry point designed solely to aesthetics. Ventilation and insulation are another field in which the design of glass will greatly benefit. After all, the best designers not only understand aesthetics, but also the functional and immersive elements of interior space. Anything as simple as fresh air flowing into space through a window or opening a glass roof may add transformative quality, making spaces feel as airy and inviting as they appear. Another form in which glass can help interior design concerns privacy. Although this might sound a little backward, glass and privacy are not necessarily synonymous. However, cutting edge glazing choices can now turn glass panels between transparent and opaque by pressing a button. Switchable glass is becoming an increasingly common aspect of interior design, with anything from shower walls to glass cabinets capable of integrating technology. Quality of Lifetime Minimum glazing can deliver an aesthetic of a special, timeless nature. Facilities such as glass links and other items involving frameless glazing are often combined with historic or listed buildings since, they have a fully discreet effect.

2020, VOLUME - 07, ISSUE - 02

In this way, glass is perhaps one of the most functional materials for dealing with buildings that are either architecturally historic or unnecessarily conventional. Modern glazing installations will breathe new life into an interior space, and the most subtle and delicate solutions do not deteriorate with time. More than Just Structural Features Although glass can only be associated with structural features such as windows and doors, this is not the whole picture. As a product, glass can be used effectively in any design configuration, whether it is a small glass sink or a large glass table. Frequently used in modern and minimal designs, glass features such as these can greatly improve the modern feel of space. In Transparent View There is a lot to be said about glazing in interior design, but the advantages are clear. Although it provides an array of visual and functional advantages, its greatest advantage is the manner in which it puts all the power of the world back in the hands of the user. Whether by filling a room with natural light or simply providing an outdoor entry point, glass features can be used to wipe the slate clean and reclaim the space as a welcoming blank canvas.
