T

he renewable energy sector has grown in fits & starts and now may have the thrust to become a self-sustaining industry. In the past decade, renewable energy sources were poised for accelerated growth and now the sector is beginning to grow again. Some industry observers are still questioning whether the market is buoyant enough to continue that growth. The market has evolved in several important ways and it is unlikely to experience the periods of decline or stagnation we have seen in the past. The renewables sector today will make all the difference with its structural diversity in terms of technologies, players, and geographic regions.

Renewable Energy at a Verge of Intersection

Renewables have been a hotbed of activity in the past and today, the evolving entrepreneurial environment continues to present opportunities for investment. However, given the uncertainty and complexity in the renewables marketplace, investment decisions are now much more difficult, requiring decision-making skills and tools that were not essential before the economic downturn. Going forward, investment decisions will need to explicitly address the uncertainty through effective risk management and contingency planning. For utilities, renewables are not viable base load technologies. Even as a complementary energy source, they carry costs that make them noncompetitive without subsidies. Power source decisions will therefore depend largely on local conditions, including the presence of renewable energy mandates, government incentives, and site availability. Here too, the array of incentives and technologies will make comprehensive business case planning and risk analysis imperative. Furthermore, it will be critical for companies to develop the capabilities needed to both evaluate and add value to the assets and technologies that are likely to reenter the market in the months and years ahead. The relatively favorable investment climate of the past decade attracted a number of companies that ultimately lacked the expertise to endure and win in today’s more difficult investment environment. The companies that can pick up the assets and position them to create a sustained competitive advantage will be the ones that establish the right to win in this market. Clear industry leaders are already starting to emerge, but plenty of opportunity remains for those with the vision and the capabilities to power the next move forward in global energy markets.

company has a resource base of diverse and versatile design software’s for their in-house engineering teams. Their In-house project management and monitoring teams reduces operating time-lines and increases quality. They also boast of customer oriented and dedicated service team to attend to their clients 24/7 with a dedicated toll free line. Innovation is their Thing Novus in Latin means New or Innovative. True to its name, innovation seems to be their thing in designs and the material being used. In 2011, they designed and built their first fully integrated 1.1 MWp Captive Solar PV Power Project in Chhattisgarh for the Secretariat in the new capital city of Naya Raipur. This project received accolades from all the solar experts across India and was termed as a model project. The project was inaugurated by Dr. Farooq Abdullah, the then Minister for MNRE. There were many first of its kind used material in this project – from 3 different types of Earth Screw Type structures to stainless steel cable ties. Eventually Novus Green became a known name across India due to their innovation and commitment. Another first to their account comes in the form of a solar bus shelter. Within a record time of one month they designed and erected a 100KWp plant as bus shelter which spans across 100meters in length and houses more than 30 school buses. This laid foundation to many such solar shelters coming across India.

A Vision of Solar India In 2014 Novus Green, has designed and installed the largest PV integrated rooftop in Delhi NCR for IIT Delhi. This 2MWp projects stands as the biggest solar roof-top project in the Delhi. In addition to their regular EPC division, Novus Green is venturing into RESCO model or third-party model in Rooftop Solar Project through its subsidiary company. Over the next three years Novus Green desires to achieve 500 MWp installations across India, under which 300 MWp would be in RESCO Model through this subsidiary company. By proactively participating in framing of government policies, the strategy of the company is always in sync with the vision of Solar India. They function with the belief & contribution of Entrepreneurship, Teamwork & Relationship, Delivering the Promises, Continuous Learning, Social Responsibility & Respect for Individual. In addition to the above, Novus Green is venturing into energy storage and electric vehicle developments through its strategic associations with technology partners from Europe and China. The Remarkable Leaders of Novus Green The management seems to be geared up for these ambitious targets and growth plans. The company is run under the dynamism of Anshuman Yenigalla, who is the Founder & Managing Director. After his post-

graduation from IIT Kharagpur he worked in Honeywell in their aerospace division. Subsequent to a year of employment, he quit his job to venture into renewable energy space. His vision to concentrate only on the captive power segment and not venture into utility scale EPC seems to have paid good dividends now. Anshuman is supported by Ravindra Yenigalla, another Director in the company, who is responsible for the entire Group’s corporate relations and structuring. He plays a vital role in strategic planning and financial analysis for the Group in addition to maintaining and nurturing business and investor relations. Known as the trouble shooter he comes to the rescue as and when there is a serious issue that the organization faces. Current Industry Scenario & Challenges According to Novus Green, solar today has become a term everyone knows and talks about. The industry has become more focused, bigger and streamlined. “I see a lot of companies coming up every other day and feel happy. The very ambitious program of our government to have 100 GW by 2022 has opened new avenues and doors to more and more entrepreneurs. The best part is that now they don’t have to go through the hurdles that we had to encounter during our growth phase. Things are now restructured now, policies are in place, markets have opened up, and there is a wide acceptance of solar, unlike earlier where it was more of a myth -solar is

On the other hand, Ravindra says, “In any business, you wake up daily to new challenges. The moment you overcome a challenge, a new vision and experience comes out. Similarly, with us also, we have faced tremendous challenges from our inception. Most of the challenges we faced were policy related. By the time our business strategy was formulated for the time, latest changes would come up. We had to constantly be alert and keep changing very frequently. Roof top market was highly subsidized earlier. What kinds of subsidies, who could avail subsidies, release of subsidies, were always a task at hand. Solar as a technology was also constantly evolving then. We always had to pick and choose the right technology partners and vendors who would be able to cater to the client's requirements and provide proper and dedicated service. Apart from these, there would be other regular challenges that any business and would face from time to time.” Future Paramount Today Novus Green caters to diverse clientele across the country. They primarily deal with the renewable energy departments of more than 12 states in India. An impressive range of big names in India like Indian Institute of Technology, Gail India Ltd, Reserve Bank of India, Jindal Power and others are under their kitty. With all the factors going right for them and with a very ambitious growth plan, Novus Green seems to be an organisation that needs to be watched out for as they plan to go public in the next few years.

It is our

very expensive and the technology is not reliable in the long run. The acceptance across various industry sectors also has increased to adopt solar. More and more industries and institutional clients are coming ahead to adopt solar as a secondary source of power. In fact, we have installed a few plants in hospitals where the ICU units and critical loads are powered by solar. In my opinion the industry today has very clear market segments, time tested technologies, trained man power and wider acceptability in the market,” asserts Anshuman.

Interview with Insights Success

TATA POWER: Sustaining the Pioneering spirit in the pursuit of Innovation

T

ata Power has been a pioneer in the Indian power sector value chain and has been at the forefront in assimilating advancements in technology and providing competitive, reliable and quality power to its consumers. The company has been constantly investing in technology and innovative practices, thus remaining effective and efficient in its deliverables.

In an exclusive chat with Mr. Anil Sardana, the CEO & MD of Tata Power, we discuss about the current initiatives and the future endeavors at Tata Power. This Interview is sure to give you a whole new perspective and insight into one of the most decorated Energy Providers in the world. 1)

10 16

Kindly brief us about Tata Power. Kindly sketch a brief history of Tata Power. What is the current Industry scenario from your point of view?

Buoyed by the vision of its founder, Late Shri Jamshetji N Tata, that clean, cheap and abundant power is one of the basic ingredients for the economic progress of a city, a state or a country, Tata Power began its operations in 1915 by commissioning India’s first large hydroelectric project in Khopoli, Maharashtra. Being a century old company, we are committed to providing our customers with reliable and uninterrupted power supply and other solutions, teamed with superior customer service. The company today touches the lives of every stakeholder by adding value to their lives through various initiatives. These initiatives seep down to the last beneficiary, be it employees, customers, communities surrounding our areas of operations, shareholders, investors, and the nation at large.

Tata Power currently has an installed gross generation operating capacity of 10,613 MW, of which, clean energy portfolio is 3141 MW, making us one of the largest non-fossil based energy players in India. Tata Power has reiterated its commitment to clean energy, and announced that its nonfossil fuel energy capacity will be 3540 per cent by 2025. Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Power, and is the Company’s primary investment vehicle for clean and renewable energy based power generation capacity. Tata Power is present in the entire life-cycle of the power business viz. Fuel and Logistics, Generation (thermal, hydro, solar and wind), Transmission, Distribution and Trading. It has successful publicprivate partnerships in Generation, Transmission and Distribution in India. Besides India, it has operations in Africa, MENA region, and South-East Asia.

March 2018

Mr. Anil Sardana CEO & MD

The industry scenario in India is bullish on renewable capacity buildup, whereas conventional thermal power may not see new builds in the recent times but may witness revamping of facilities for them to become environmentally benign. The sector may also see large scale distribution reforms. 2)

On which innovation is Tata Power currently working on?

Tata Power is continuing its pioneering spirit by pursuing various innovative solutions in Decentralized Distributed Generation (DDG). DDG enables small-scale technologies to produce electricity close to the end users of power. The technologies used often consist of modular (often renewableenergy based) generators, offering potential benefits like providing electricity with higher power reliability and security, along with fewer environmental consequences than

March 2018

reducing our carbon footprint and investing in cleaner technologies and global resources. traditional power generators. The pioneering spirit is at the root of every Tata Power team member & the pursuit for innovative products, solutions, and business models will continue. Tata Power has always set a standard in adopting sustainable practices in its business by using innovative technology, providing customers access to energy-efficient processes, increasing green generation capacity and partnering with institutions of scientific learning. 3)

Kindly tell us about the green initiatives undertaken by Tata Power.

In the quest to deliver clean energy, we as a Company are focusing on building a robust renewable energy portfolio, scouting for clean sources of power,

Powered by Greenolution, Tata Power in 2015 launched ‘Be Green’ campaign following the mantra that green is the only way to evolve and has set new benchmarks by caring for the planet and its future. The campaign follows a holistic approach towards energy and resource conservation and encourages consumers to take the pledge by signing up to any five of their enlisted pledges. In last few years, Tata Power has launched diverse DSM programs which include appliance exchange, load shift and energy audits. Some innovative programs like “Demand Response”, a smart grid solution and “Thermal storage”, a load shift solution were acknowledged at a national level. Tata Power is one of the earliest

10 17

utilities in India to have embraced DSM programs in a wide spread manner. How is Tata Power helping its customers to amass the benefits of its superior features? For decades, Tata Power has been successfully supplying power to the country. We have built robust Private Public Partnerships with various entities and are proud to be the largest integrated power company in India. Notwithstanding competition and regulation, we believe that dealing ethically with stakeholders is the best policy and affirm to the adage, ‘honesty is the best policy’, and our stakeholders — be they consumers or government regulators — have applauded us for it.

6) Finally, can you brief us about your most successfully incorporated strategy, in terms of energy production and distribution, currently in the market?

4)

Business ethics, corporate governance, sustainability, community relations, and being an employer of choice, along with providing clean, competitive, abundant, and uninterrupted power supply are Tata Power’s key tenets in building corporate character and trust in the marketplace. This commitment is steadfast and deep down in every employee and associate, and that’s what helps the team stay focused in pursuing its objectives. 5)

What are the upcoming future prospects of Tata Power.

In terms of energy production, a quick ramp up of nonfossil fuel capacity to 30% of portfolio has been a successful strategy. In distribution, turnaround of ailing state-owned enterprise in Delhi has been a well-executed strategy. Tata Power has recently signed a joint venture between Tata Power and the Government of NCT of Delhi with the majority stake being held by Tata Power Company (51%). The company started operations on July 1, 2002 post the unbundling of the erstwhile Delhi Vidyut Board (DVB) and has been the frontrunner in implementing power distribution reforms in the capital city and is acknowledged for its consumer-friendly practices. Since privatization, the Aggregate Technical & Commercial (AT&C) losses in Tata Power-DDL areas have shown a record decline. Today, AT&C losses stand at 8.59%, which is an unprecedented reduction of around 84% from an opening loss level of 53% in July 2002. Tata Power has recently signed a Distribution Franchisee Agreement (DFA) with Ajmer Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited (AVVNL) to cater to the power requirements of customers in Ajmer by replicating this success story of Delhi.

In line with the government’s objective towards promoting renewable energy, Tata Power has a well-defined growth plan and is pursuing actions towards achieving the same. The Company aims to build a total capacity of 20,000 MW by 2025. We are working towards achieving this target and, in FY17, we have added about 1400 MW of capacity with various projects in pipeline. For the next 3 years, the company has sketched out a well-defined plan to shape up its balance sheet, and is pursuing actions towards achieving the same. We wish to increase our solar & wind businesses significantly over a period of time; as the government is expected to bid out large scale projects to meet its target. We are exploring multiple options, both Greenfield and acquisitions, to be able to capture the market for Solar, Wind, and hydro based generation. The Company is also in the process of acquiring suitable land parcels in various states to support development of solar and wind projects.

Aura Energy: An Integrated Platform Leveraging Expertise to Serve Clients Globally

T

he demand for energy is growing day by day in the whole world. The Conventional energy sources like coal and petroleum are limited and Renewable energy resources will be seen playing an important role in the future. Aura Energy is one such manufacturer of Solar Products with a simple mission to champion the transition from fossil fuel to inexpensive, clean, sustainable solar energy, and empower homes and communities.

Abhinav Sharan Founder & CEO

We have a product for every consumer at every price point 20 10

Incorporated in December 2013 in New Delhi, Aura expands its offerings to include Solar EPC services specializing in the rooftop segment. By 2016, Aura became an MNRE Channel Partner offering both EPC services and added PMC for megawatt scale solar power plants. Today, Aura is a premier manufacturer of solar products with operations in 7 states across India. Aura is now exporting its motion sensor based Solar Street lights to the United States and plans to expand its market moving forward. Catering Products to a Wide Array of Applications Aura is constantly innovating and customizing its products to stay at the vanguard of technology. Aura’s product range features the latest Lithium battery technology to ensure lightweight, compact designs. Furthermore, each product has a modular design so as to ensure higher compatibility with existing infrastructure and greater ease of installation. The products are designed to ensure longevity and durability. For example, their Solar Street Lights feature motion sensors that enable them to turn on and off depending on whether there is a need, thereby increasing the product life. Aura is currently working on designing SMART Solar Street Lighting systems that incorporates all components of

March 2018

a normal Solar Street Light such as Solar Panels, Batteries, LEDs, etc. in one compact product along with additional features like remote connectivity, energy conservation, app control, etc. On the Industrial side, the company is working on custom designed packages for applications in telecommunication and railways. An Accomplished Leader Abhinav Sharan is the Founder & CEO of Aura Renewable Energy. He has completed his Undergraduate Major in EECS (Electrical Engineering & Computer Science) from University of California, Berkeley and Masters in MS&E from Columbia University, New York. Being a skillful and accomplished leader, Abhinav works on ensuring that there is constant in house innovation and evolution to own the Intellectual Property that drives Aura’s products. This allows Aura to offer custom built products and solutions to its customers. His focus remains on creating robust processes that lowers chances of human error. “To be competitive in the global marketplaces, there is an added emphasis on maximizing in house content enabling better cost control and greater throughput,” asserts Abhinav. Aura’s Say on Current Industry Scenario According to Aura, the Industry is currently undergoing a period of transformation from a controlled, subsidy driven market to a free one. Due to this, there is a good amount of consolidation that is taking place. The main focus for the past few years has been on large scale solar power plants, however, they believe that this will have to change if people are serious about using alternative sources of energy for their everyday needs. “The Government of India has targeted total installation of around 100,000 MW by March 2022 out of which 40,000 MW must come from Rooftops out of which we have only achieved around 900 MW so far. Furthermore, most of the discourse is around these large scale solar power plants that are still subject to our crumbling Transmission & Distribution infrastructure. Although rates have fallen drastically over the last few years, the end consumer doesn’t benefit due to the added costs of Transmission & Distribution. To achieve our targets, we must focus on decentralized solar/alternative energy applications such as Solar Rooftops and Solar Street Lights, where projects can go from concept to completion quickly without dependencies on supporting infrastructure. The push

March 2018

towards Smart Cities across India will also offer new and exciting opportunities for the Renewable Energy space.” Defeating the Obstacles Back when Aura was first established, they faced an uphill task in talent acquisition. Being a relatively new industry, there wasn’t enough qualified talent available that had the necessary skill sets. Additionally, access to Banking and Capital always remained a challenge, where high interest rates and low market liquidity lead to stretched working capital needs. Overall, there has been a general lack of appreciation for quality products and performance. Most of the conversation is used to be driven by subsidy and pricing but Aura is now able to see this changing as the market matures and understands the importance of product performance. The Successful Strategy For Aura, there are two matrices that were challenging. One was balancing the product vs project offerings and added to this was segmenting the solar market across India. The strategy in overcoming these challenges that paid off best was Aura’s focus on building a world-class product. This enabled the company to tap the domestic and the export markets. Aura has done this by innovating decentralized smart products such as Integrated Solar Street Lighting Systems, Solar Hybrid Inverters and Solar Home Lighting Systems that use the latest Lithium Ion/Lithium Ferro Phosphate batteries for ease of use and low maintenance. The emphasis on decentralized power has ensured that their projects and products can be installed without any dependence on supporting infrastructure leading to quick turnaround times and maximizing cost benefits to the end user. The Future Focus of Aura Aura is now looking forward outside the global markets and is focusing on exports. On the domestic front, Aura is working on multiple projects with MES (Military Engineering Services) that incorporate the Integrated Solar Street Light and All in One Solar Street Light products. The company is also innovating and adapting its solar offerings for industrial applications in the Telecom, Railways and Process Industries.

It enables electrical companies and grid system operators to utilize smart grid technology in: Trimming Capital Expenses With the advent of IoT in smart grid, a precise match between demand and supply across the grid becomes possible. The companies associated with electricity generation become able to meet peak demand without redundant generation of electricity and at the same time can also trace efficient distribution paths, minimizing transmission costs and ensuring optimum asset operation. electrical assets and forming a smart world of complex equipment which can be described as an ‘Internet of Watts’ – but which is, in fact, an example of the Internet of Things (IoT) in action. The IoT has helped in establishing internet connectivity with energy producing plants, equipment and devices. IoT is also connecting these devices to intelligent networks and using data analytics to extract meaningful and actionable insights from devices. In the context of the smart grid technology, this means allocating computing intelligence throughout the infrastructure. or energy saving, a Weatherization program is quite common to implemented by the Utility companies in the western part of the world. The program is mainly run for the low-earning families. This article emphasize on IWORKETCH’s experience on building a platform for the US-based company. What is weatherization? As per Wiki, Weatherization (American English) or weatherproofing (British English) is the practice of protecting a building and its interior from the elements, particularly from sunlight, precipitation, and wind, and of modifying a building to reduce energy consumption and optimize energy efficiency. Why the weatherization needed? One thinks that if my house is well insulated than I am good as far as the heat protection of the home is a concern. It is true that various types of insulation can block drafts of the cold winds and protect the home. It gives protection from the “Conductive” heat flow. We still need weatherization to protect. It primarily reduces “Convective” heat flow.

Insights into Weatherization procedure Typically following steps are taken: Step1: In the Weatherization process home’s audit is done. The auditor keeps focus on to check:

The normal flow mentioned above might need to adjust to handle cases where low-earning families are not meeting income, age, earnings, etc criteria.

• Areas like windows, pipes, wiring that penetrate ceiling and floor, doors, sealing cracks, etc., for highpotential heat loss. • Light fixtures near attic space • heat loss due to air-duct • dampers of the exhaust fans • pipe condition • wall, floor, and ceilings condition • door and window sealings • and more

Implementation of the Weatherization Program While implementing the solution, we considered a list of actors. These are: • Administrator • Customer • Auditor • Inspector • Contractor

An auditor then proposes the changes which can make home more energy efficient. Step2: Utility companies call for a bid to implement changes from its qualified contractor network. Step3: A selected contractor implements changes in the home. Step4: Utility company asks its inspector to validate the changes incorporated in the home. Step5: Once the inspector approves the

March 2018

changes then the Utility company pays to the contractor.

These actors are using the web-based portal and mobile application. The web-based application is developed on the Windows platform. The mobile application is developed using Xamarin. The web-based portal works under the contemporary browsers. The mobile application works on iOS and Android. Summary The solution is designed and developed mainly for the US residential market. However, the author believes the similar need does exist in all markets including India.

hether moving in a driverless car or deliver an e-commerce product at customers doorstep. “Location” plays an important role. There is a significant dimension of “Location” in every business transactions. Location can be an address, a service boundary, a sales territory, or a delivery route. Therefore location-specific data and its analytics are high in demand among various enterprises. Analytics of location-based data helps an organization to earn more profit and also contribute in making operational activities much more efficient and faster. Enterprises from different domains, therefore, now started using location-based data analytics application. “Spatial Intelligence” is one of them. Spatial Intelligence Spatial Intelligence (SI) is an application of GIS and is also known as Location Intelligence. Spatial Intelligence is the process of deriving meaningful insights from geospatial data captured by GIS. With many different observations, patterns get

10 28

discovered which help a business to take better decisions, optimize their business operations and increase their profits. Eminence of GIS GIS stands for Geographic Information System. GIS is a system, which is designed to capture, store, manipulate, manage and present “Location” specific data to its end users in graphical format. It is a system which comprises of software, hardware, people, data, and methods. GIS software lets an organization to produce maps and other graphic displays of geographic information for analysis and presentation. GIS is much more than a container of maps in digital form. GIS hardware helps to capture an image and other digital data for a particular location. People are the end users of GIS; it can be GIS technicians, managers, administrators, etc. Spatial Intelligence for Businesses Transformation

It is generally known fact that more than 80% of all data has a location element to it and that location directly affects the kind of insights that you might draw from many sets of information. By carrying out a spatial analysis of this data using varied business intelligence (BI) tools, decision makers will able to better understand the past, current and forthcoming aspects of business operations to derive valuable insights and make most effective decisions for their businesses. Most of the time enterprises require customer’s data related to specific locations to know income levels, educational background, buying habits of persons residing in a specific area which helps a business to find a probable location where that particular business get flourished. Spatial Intelligence derives meaningful observations for an existing business as well. In which areas an organization is performing well? Which are the underperforming areas? Which are the

March 2018

areas where a company needs to focus immediate attention? There is a series of many important questions related to a business growth. Spatial intelligence has the potential to derive meaningful answers to these questions. Spatial relationships, patterns and trends reveal priceless business intelligence and bring easy-tounderstand visualization to business applications. The power of location intelligence enables companies to identify and increase where business performs stronger and cut down on failing assets. TM ™

March 2018

Spatial Intelligence is Getting Recognition among Different Enterprises Companies from different verticals are taking Spatial Intelligence very seriously and investing huge money on it. Traditional players of the geospatial industry like Esri, Hexagon and Pitney Bowes are working with spatial data on a large scale. Apart from these companies many hard-core IT corporations like Oracle, Microsoft and IBM are also venturing into spatial analytics at full throttle. For instance, by integrating Esri’s technologies into Azure IoT Suite’s preconfigured

solutions, Microsoft is empowering customers to gain valuable insights about where their assets are and what they are doing at all times, anywhere in the world. Which sectors are gaining from Spatial Intelligence? There are two categories of businesses which are using Spatial Intelligence. The first set is of those businesses which are naturally embedded in geographies like transport, telecommunication, or real estate, which absolutely depend on locationbased information. The second set

29 10

comprises of the group of users who not essentially use geospatial data on an everyday basis but they still depend on it for better performance. These would be retailers, insurance companies and banks. Let’s enlighten how these sectors are gaining with Spatial Intelligence: Logistics: To check the consumption rate of a particular product on a particular location help warehouse management to determine, which stock is needed on a priority basis? Thus it helps a logistic company to maintain demand-supply ratio without any caveat. Companies like United Parcel Service and FedEx are augmenting delivery routes using spatial analytics. Transport: To determine the shortest and fastest transportation routes for delivery, SI is very helpful. Apart from this, it also provides direction to travellers while driving. Real State: Many people buy a house based on the location. People prefer a location which is near to a hospital, a railway station, schools etc. Spatial analytics provides research, analysis, and presentation of each prospective site. It helps in determining ideal sites for development. Telecommunication: In analyzing rivals network coverage, actual bandwidth, potential area to tap new business opportunity, SI is really helpful for telecommunication. Energy: Spatial Intelligence is helping energy industry to identify the potential location for energy exploration. Retail: Spatial analysis is helping the retail industry to maintain stock

10 30

delivery, store management, inventory management, marketing and sales. Advertisement Industry: SI helps Advertisement and PR agency in order to find potential location, to install billboard so that it gets maximum views. Healthcare: To identifying those locations, which are more prone to a certain disease, SI provides valuable inputs to the health officials to make policy and administrative decisions to control epidemic diseases. Airports and airlines: Air traffic control use SI to track flight operations with greater accuracy and efficiency. SI helps airlines to reroute flight path in case of an emergency. It also helps in optimizing fuel and staff cost.

Drought and hailstorm have become a common phenomenon since last few decades. Drought and hailstorm contribute to large-scale crop damages. Crop insurance has gained popularity due to drought and hailstorm. SI helps insurance company to predict in advance about future climate behaviors for a particular location and helps them in making crop insurance policy and promotion as well. Humans think visually, therefore spatially. Due to visual decoding, comparison of data and invaluable business insights, SI has already made inroads across various enterprises. With many emerging technologies like crowdsourcing, human geography and visual analytics, dominance of Spatial Intelligence will only grow further.

Government agencies: Not only private companies but many government agencies are also using SI. Defense agencies, town planning department or public distribution system all are using SI for better administration and efficient operations. Insurance Company: Climate is not under anyone’s control but policies are. | March 2018 |

hen there was no internet people worked for stipulated hours, till the office doors were closed. But the technology has changed the office working scenario. We are now living in the information age where our work life intervenes with the innovations and technologies of the future. Therefore, it wouldn’t be a surprise if in the future, the term office itself is rendered obsolete. Various technological aspects are slowly transforming the workplace and its workers. In this era of industrial revolution usage of the cloud and data have become the norm, so the employees have moved from “business to bleisure”. With so many changes taking place at the same time, so the office culture is on the move to cope up with the revolution. As of now the offices are more collaborative, less hierarchical, more flexible and less location specific- The work from home culture is also on the rise. Bleisure! What is it? The amalgamation of business with leisure is Bleisure-as an end product. When there are deadlines, overflowing work load and stress then bleisure concept comes into rescue. The workplace culture needs a change, and the concept of bleisure is the ongoing trend. Offices are less likely to remain the same in the near future. Workplaces would be more like a holiday spot rather than a traditional office space with numerous cubicles. With the bleisure transformation the stress levels will decrease and the productivity will increase. Moving Over IoT

connecting the devices are also redefining the future work culture transformation possibilities. As IoT is a big deal now, the global work culture is heading towards the transformation of the traditional work force into the mobile one. Adam Greenfield, the author of “Everyware: The Dawning Age of Ubiquitous Computing,” has gone a step further to come up with the term of The Age of Everyware, which means “anything electronic will be linked to the internet. Which means with more devices connected to each other; our work will be increasingly seamless.” The Cloud Magic Everyone in this world believe in collaboration, and so is the cloud. Fueled by the evolution of cloud and mobility services, the future organisations will be more efficiently capable of collaborating and achieving more. As the traditional PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) infrastructure is getting obsolete, all the voice based services will move out of the PSTN in the near future. So, now cloud based services are ready to setup a new trend and transform utility services of voice and video based content. The future work culture is ready to collaborate in a better manner with cloud based collaboration services. According to Chris Sanderson, Co-Founder of The Future Laboratory: “believe in smart work, more than hard work which requires connecting, creating, collaborating wherever it makes sense.”

The work culture is entering an era where- The way how we connect with each other and the way we are

rganizations believe that once they have a vision on track, meeting the company goals ought to be a cakewalk. But what if somewhere along the way, your driving force decides to take a back seat? Scott Carbonara, a dynamic leader once said “What you believe about employees comes out in how you treat them. And how you treat them ultimately determines how effectively you engage them.” And truly there have been many trends over a period of time.

The more we think about employee engagement, the more we realize that it is no longer a matter of self or choice. If you believe that people run an organization, keeping them engaged is important. Requisitions have come and gone, referrals have been passed to and fro, and recommendations have been sought far and wide. But one aspect we often tend to overlook, Rewards & Recognition. A crucial and defining factor that many organizations till date neglect. It matters a great deal, and organizations must put in more efforts to meet these silent requirements. Help Make the Routine Fun Why do you go to work? Why does anybody push themselves out of bed, make efforts to groom, to clean up, and hurry off to work; if they aren’t driven enough? If it’s not the money, then why agree to spend half of your day behind a closed cubicle? Why stick through the monotony where creativity has been asked to take a back seat right from the days of probation? Regular Rotation Leads to an All Rounder Impact The human brain prospers when challenged. If and when life becomes a routine, the workplace productivity shouldn’t suffer. Once in a while, a puzzle should be welcomed. Something as simple as re-doing a presentation pitch with a fresh perspective, or even scrounging for a new economical vendor option – Variety should always be the spice of work life! It helps an individual evolve at a personal level and cope with working smart.

38 10

What Drives The Driving Force? Change is an ongoing process. With infinite possibilities and definite results. The ultimate goal is to build a formidable workforce. One that can successfully function without your overshadowing presence. There are certain aspects that can be contemplated while inculcating an amicable work culture – Breaking across stereotypical norms, overcoming geographical barriers, volatile age demographics and even gender biases. A culture that nurtures a sense of accountability amidst its people, will always cut across all organizations. Instilling A Sense Of Pride The key to efficient workplace productivity lies in retention with every individual performing his/ her best. It’s not something fancy, but the good old sense of stability. A secure job, the thriving presence of trust, and the flexibility to work. If people are not engaged at work, it brings down your organization’s productivity levels. It’s really that simple. Happier employees are more productive, more engaged and thus, stay longer. I once came across this powerful quote “Leaders who don’t listen will eventually be surrounded by people who have nothing to say.” Consider chalking out an employee engagement strategy, even if you operate as a team of five. Not every organization is the same, and not every team will stay stagnant at five. (If you do, you need a reality check!) It is your internal communication module with the existing people that helps set the pace for the future. And the role that people play links back to how you deal with them on a daily basis. Imagine the feeling of having to come to work every day, not knowing why you do it! You may have an abusive boss, a salary that barely helps you stay afloat, or worse, the canteen food may be something you detest! Have you ever wondered what is that one thing that makes people want to stick around?

March 2018

Driving Business While everybody says it’s a top driven series of micro culture led interventions that should do the trick, in my humble opinion, it is also essential that top-line managers who report to CEO’s, have the ability to let go while interacting with their subordinates. That said, to simply sum it up, there needs to exist transparency within the functioning of an organization. Identifying the goals of your employees and helping them achieve it, is a best practice that will help align their dedication towards achieving the company’s goals. The best way to tackle a mind block that hinders productivity at the workplace is to indulge in an off-beat, detoxifying activity. Engaging the employee doesn't always have to be in the form of an offsite. Raise individuals who ask questions, encourage people who do not conform to the box, support those who refuse to bow down to a regressive environment that doesn’t allow room for innovation. Be a mentor, create a new generation of leaders. Listen to their needs, respect their opinions, give them ample opportunities to learn and explore. It’s always advisable to put your ‘People First’. You take care of them, and they, take care of the work. Simple right?

istorically, energy has been the cause of numerous conflicts. Access to petrol has generated deadly wars and a split between producer and consumer countries, incarnated since the past 3 decades by the rival organizations. There is no such global organization as far as nuclear energy is concerned. Founded on 26th January 2009 in Germany, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is a real breakthrough. IRENA is the agency of reconciliation of all countries to form a sacred union for a global fight; the transition to clean energy. As of now 136 countries have agreed to develop renewable energy together. This is the first time that this kind of energy has reached such a consensus. And this has occurred at a time when the IPCC, presided by an eminent Indian renowned scientist has launched works that will conclude with the publication of a report on renewable energy within a year. Today, renewable energy represents 18 percent of global energy consumption. This is mainly constituted of traditional biomass; women in developing countries who use wood for cooking and hydraulic energy. But other forms of renewable energy, such as wind and solar energy, have witnessed very strong growth rates, which is more than 20 per cent per year over the last decade for the former, and an even higher growth rate for the latter. As renewable energy is the only source of unlimited energy, it has the potential to meet the needs of 10 billion human beings that we shall number in 2050. Therefore, renewable energy is a paramount solution for fighting the climate change. The potential of renewable energy is not only immense but also well distributed, unlike fossil fuels; let us not forget that 65 percent of oil is concentrated in the

Middle East. Be it the sun, the wind, rivers, the sea, the heat of the earth, the forest and agricultural and industrial residues, each country on Earth has resources. India is the founder-member of IRENA and it is the only country in the world to have a ministry dedicated to renewable energy and the potential is immense. Electricity from renewable energy already accounts for 9 percent of installed capacity. Globally, India is the 5th largest producer of wind energy; national champions, such as Suzlon, have been created and the resources are far from having been completely exploited. Today, exploiting the potential of solar energy - “Solar India” constitutes the next challenge. India’s ambitious solar energy plan, which targets a 20 GW capacity by 2020, is indeed pleasing to all. New norms and regulations will be incorporated in it. Well gauged and effective, they could serve as an example for other countries.

States, IRENA will work hand in hand to develop renewable energy. Together, it is necessary to pool expertise for laying down the most effective regulations, which will help increase the share of renewable energy. On the other hand, it is equally important to interconnect research centres in the world and create a global database so that each country may be aware of the resources at its disposal. There is also a need to invent new products so as to render solar technology accessible to the poorest and finance exemplary cooperation projects and meet the vast existing training needs. However, it is imperative for people to accomplish a Copernican revolution together. For years we have been living with a centralised energy system and we will now move towards a decentralized system wherein there will be numerous production sources. We are used to a rigid, non communicating electricity network, which should instead be made flexible and intelligent. We had thought that electricity could not be stocked; tomorrow the batteries of millions of electric vehicles will drastically reduce the need for large stocking capacity. Hence, the energy transformation will also be that of a change in mindset.
