While same-day shipment to almost any location in the world is an exciting possibility that requires a vast regulatory network to be established before it’s practically viable. n the current business scenario, pace is of crucial importance for most industry segments. People are running out of time and the only word that is buzzing around people’s mind is “Busy-ness”. From getting a browsing result to receiving a cargo delivery, people want everything to be immediate. Businesses need logistics services to tune to such requirements for reaching out to the customers within tight timelines, delivering products, spare parts, samples, contracts, letters, etc. The speed of such deliveries is critical for garnering sales across regions, meeting customer expectations and maintaining the business competitiveness. Blue Dart is India’s most innovative and awarded express delivery company. It has a formidable express and logistics network covering more than 35,000 locations and more than 220 countries and territories serviced internationally through DHL. The Inception of Blue Dart and its Initial Struggles With a vision “To be the best and set the pace in the express air and integrated transportation and distribution industry, with a business and human conscience.”, Blue Dart was formed in November 1983 by three young entrepreneurs, Clyde Cooper, Tushar Jani and Kushroo Dubash with a capital of Rs. 30,000 and 200 square feet of space. or the sake of growth and prosperity, every business sectors are required to send their products and packages more quickly to the target destination. Consequently, the role of courier service companies is quite essential for smooth functioning of business. Days are gone, where the consumer had to wait for several days to receive their products and packages. Today, the companies are being more reliable on courier service providers in order to outsource their consignment delivery as quick as possible. No matter how fast the product is manufactured, if it is not delivering at right time, the rest of the efforts would be wasteful. Even the courier companies give values to their customers by providing online tracking and safety actions facilities, so that the package does not reach the wrong hands. They also support the customers through identification codes so that they stay assured that the product would safely reach the target destination. The effectiveness of courier services is entirely dependent on the time factor and the level of organization and management of the whole process. The new achievements in technology and innovation, including the development of electronic technologies adapted to the process of providing courier services are the basis for achieving higher delivery speed, higher quality and more competitive prices of these services. Around the globe, business companies are taking advantages from price discount offer by courier companies. This enables the business to cut down their overall cost of product. There are several online booking centers available which are getting heavy discounts from many international courier companies. This is the reason why the businesses are showing interest in making corporate relations with these online service providers in order to get the maximum benefit. Even the customers who are digitally connected are gazing for lower cost with greater convenience and a seamless experience while buying, receiving and returning products. The business companies are forcing the post and parcel companies to rethink traditional parcel delivery. Courier Services Adapting to Technology Advancement The courier industry is developing immensely on the speed and reliability when making a delivery, because of the technology that has been implemented. The fast development of the postal and courier services sector, the high customer requirements and constantly increasing competition are sufficient reasons for active search for new technologies and innovations by courier service providers, aiming to adapt and use them within the service delivery process. Here’s a note on how the technology is impacting on courier services.

18

Advancement in courier through Online Services The online services are the most popular technology advancement that’s affecting the courier industry. Currently, courier services allow their clients to do pretty much everything online including booking pickup, scheduling delivery, selecting packaging, making payments, and much more. Operating Handheld Devices Now courier industry is using handheld devices, such as scanners and tablets, to reduce the amount of paper waste. Apart from reducing the amount of paperwork, handheld devices help to reduce the chances of packages being lost during transport. Suppose if the packages are misplaced it costs the courier service more in operating costs, as employees have to track it down. They also capture signatures of customers upon delivery through handheld devices and then store it for future reference. Tracking Packages with GPS The courier services also utilizing the GPS in their everyday operations. Through GPS, they have the opportunity not only to track their own employees but also give clients the ability to track where their packages are located. Presently, clients can track their package from the minute it is picked up by the courier service companies to the minute it is delivered to the recipient. Ensuring the Service through Route Optimization Route optimization helps the clients of courier service companies to get the most effective service possible from a cost-efficient standpoint. This also ensures the package pickup and any stops that occur within a window of time. Flexibility is a technology feature of route optimization that allows couriers to make changes on the fly on issue arises without warning. This also provides couriers with the best delivery routes to take in order to cut down time and gas usage, which gradually helps to cut down costs. Futuristic Innovation in Courier Services 3D printing is an innovative technology that is mostly developed for industrial purposes. The introduction of this technology as part of courier services has a mixed effect due to the possibility of changing the traditional production and trade, which are the main sources of courier shipments. Courier companies have started creating an international 3Dprinting factory on customers demand. The effect of this technology on courier services is expected to be smooth and the overall change in the production process should go from a mixed type of applying both traditional and innovative technologies to completely using the new technologies. However, there is still lots of improvement, need to be done that depends on the advancement of technology and its adaptation in the courier industry.

HISTORY ADVANCEMENT of LOGISTICS and

T

he probable origin of the term logistic is the Greek logistikos, meaning ‘skilled in calculating’. It was initially developed in the context of military activities in the late 18th and early 19th centuries and it launched from the military logistics of World War II. It was initially a military activity concerned with getting soldiers and munitions to the battlefront in time for flight. Military typically incorporate the supply, movement and quartering of troops in a set. The main background of its development is that the recession of America in the 1950s caused the industrial to place importance on goods circulations. Now it is seen as an integral part of the modern production process. Business logistics was not an academic subject until the 1960s. A key element of logistics, the trade-off between transport and inventory costs, was formally recognized in economics at least as early as the mid-1880s. Before the 1950s, logistics was under the dormant condition. Production was the main part of the managers concerned, and industry logistics was once regarded as “necessary evil” in this period. During the 1950s to and 1960s, applying new ideas of administration on business was a tendency. Due to petroleum price rise in 1973, the effects of logistics activities on enterprises grew. Slow growth of market, pressure of high stagflation, release of transportation control, and competitions of the third world on products and materials all increased the significance of logistics system on planning and business at that time. The further tendency of logistics in the early 21st century is logistics alliance, Third Party Logistics (TPL) and globalized logistics. Logistics circulation is an essential of business activities and sustaining competitiveness, however, to conduct and manage a large company is cost consuming and not economic. Therefore, alliance of international industries could save working costs and cooperation with TPL could specialize in logistics area.

Since logistics advanced from 1950s, due to the trend of nationalization and globalization in recent decades, the importance of logistics management has been growing in various areas. For industries, logistics helps to optimize the existing production and distribution processes based on the same resources through management techniques for promoting the efficiency and competitiveness of enterprises. The key element in a logistics chain is transportation system, which joints the separated activities. Transportation occupies one-third of the amount in the logistics costs and transportation systems influence the performance of logistics system hugely. Transporting is required in the whole production procedures, from manufacturing to delivery to the final consumers and returns. Only a good coordination between each component would bring the benefits to a maximum.

Even Cargo, a startup that offers delivery services for e-commerce companies has half a dozen delivery personnel as women. By having a purpose to be in public spaces these women are present, and have fearlessly conquered navigating the unknown through their delivery routes, thus inspiring both customers and other individuals whom they meet along their delivery routes. In an interview with Insights Success, Yogesh Kumar, Founder of Even Cargo gave some insightful answers highlighting the influences made by his company to take courier services to a new level. Kindly brief us about your company. Even Cargo trains and employs women from underprivileged backgrounds to work in logistics and ferry packages on scooters across India’s capital. Since it started out in May 2016, the company has trained nearly 100 women aged between 19 and 24, from various localities of Delhi. Most of them have only completed high school-level education and are from families with an average annual income of less than Rs1 lakh ($1,470). 1. Briefly tell us about the CEO/Founder of the company. What kind of ethics, principles and manner of working does he/she observes while running the business. Yogesh is the Founder and CEO of Even Cargo. He has been leading a variety of gender initiatives across the Delhi-NCR Region over the last three years. He is an Engineering graduate and has worked for 3 years in corporate before completing his master’s degree in Social Entrepreneurship from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai. 2. How was the journey to be here and how Even Cargo has tackled the initial struggles? While at TISS, Yogesh spent few years trying out different ventures to raise awareness about gender equality and gender-based violence. However, after conducting several workshops, he realized that one of the biggest obstacles to gender equality in India was the lack of economic means among women, the result of a woefully low rate of female participation in the labor force. His first idea to tackle the problem was a cab service with female drivers. The venture fizzled out despite training around 20 women because many of the drivers were apprehensive about investing big money in buying cars. So he switched to the delivery business, focusing on scooters instead. Kumar used the money he won at the Singapore International Foundation’s 2015 Young Social Entrepreneurs competition as seed funding to establish Even Cargo. The company’s training process has four stages: a) twowheeler driving lessons, provided by Honda and the Delhi traffic police, b) self-defense training, c) soft-skills workshops, and finally d) logistics industry-specific training, where the women are taught how to read parcel numbers and dockets, for instance. However, of the women trained so far by Even Cargo, only 20 have completed all four stages and only 10 ultimately joined the organization. “The attrition rate in this industry is very high so we have to keep training as many women as possible,” said Kumar.

3. Kindly brief us about the future strategies of your company.

5. How do you see Even Cargo in a business prospective view?

For now, the company only does daytime delivery and works with companies that deal in women’s apparel and accessories to limit male contact. This is a way to build confidence among the women and reassure their conservative families. According to Kumar, the women who have begun working have shown a real interest in sticking to the job, enjoying the independence that comes with finally having a little of their own money.

Yogesh has plans to expand to other cities and employ 200 women in the next six months. He is in talks with many ecommerce companies for a tie-up to deliver their products both in Delhi and other metros. It is a venture with its heart in the right place but as a business is it making money?

However, he recognizes that there’s a long road ahead before India can become like, say, Singapore where women have much better access to public space, routinely driving buses and other public transport. “The gender biases are very deep-rooted in our society and it’s a lot of time and resource investment that goes in to change the mindset,” Kumar said.

“Not really at least not right now but we hope to become self-sustainable in the next few months,” says the social entrepreneur. Yogesh is also being mentored by Karen Tay who is a regional marketing director at Metro Cash & Carry. She discusses growth strategy every month with him and connects him to individuals who give expert advice in areas where he needs guidance.

4. Kindly brief us about the most satisfactory experience. “The response we get from the people is quite encouraging. One of my staff members went to deliver at a housing complex and the security guard was an old man. He was so surprised to see a delivery girl. He said, “The world has indeed changed a lot.” He was very appreciative of her courage and went out of his way to help her,” shares Yogesh with a smile. “In some localities when the girls stop to ask directions shopkeepers, street vendors and by-standers are pleasantly surprised and some openly applaud them for the work they are doing. They are also very inquisitive about their work and ask questions. It also gives the girls a sense of pride and purpose,” he says happily. “Perceptions take a long while to change but we have taken a step in the right direction and with proper guidance and support we will make it work,” he further adds.

operate. Other hand, many enterprises are planning to implement their own drone systems which are been prepared according to the requirement of an enterprise. Whereas, some courier service providers are using referential standard sizes to create their own drone technology for delivery purposes. Why Drones in Courier Services Since the beginning of this decade, the concept of applying drones into various sectors has been tremendously increased. As drones are remote controlled object, it gets very easier for a person to control the drone without moving from one place to other. Drones can be used for transport service that's where it plays an essential role in cargo and courier sectors. There are two process of courier service will be more beneficial, and will provide a better commodity for an enterprise. It all matters with proper deliverance For any courier firm, it’s really important to deliver packages safely from departure to its arrival. Many courier services are facing the problems like package theft, mismanagement of package, transporting damaging, and timeloss while delivery; such obstacles can be weary out if drones are prompt into action. There are certain benefits of implementing drones for courier processes which nevertheless provides an advantage over the traditional way of package delivery system. Some of those advantages in courier services are stated below: Delivery at a faster rate— Drones fly at specific altitude depending on their design thus, they are unrestricted to the roads, traffics. Unlike delivery trucks, drones don't have to face the unnecessary traffic; they can directly fly in straight line to the destination. Medical Aid—during causalities, it gets really hard for services to deliver packages at some remote areas. Therefore, by implementing drones it gets much easier to deliver packages in time. Cost as well as environment-friendly—utilizing drones will reduce the costs and also, will provide green credentials to the enterprise as drones are less likely to have an impact on the environment. Apart from such benefits, economically drones are the best way for the short-distance package delivery. Most of the time, the company has to wait to deliver short distance packages as, all the package lot depart together. Hence, it will ease up the process. In future, there might be a possibility of utilizing drones for the long distance delivery. Having a track on every possible asset Recently, package theft has become very common scenario and, it must be stopped. Cargo enterprises are taking various measures to prevent such situations. There’s an ideology in the market to implement IOTs to track various departed packages at the same time. These IOTs are pretty much easy to handle and so, could be used with drones in collaboration. An aerial tracking is always considered more effective by courier firms as, it gives out a better view while the delivery of objects. There are some drones tracking providers which help courier firms to implement drones to speed up the manual processes such as performing inventories, tracking trucks and trailers, and recording the accurate location. Moreover, the drone technology has proven itself as a perfect amenity for utilizing in short distance package delivery. Yet, it is being developing for attaining more accuracy so that, it may work flawlessly. Meanwhile, demand for drone deliveries by consumers is increasing substantially; demand and is acting like a driving force to the providers to create more efficient drones in order to meet up the consumer’s expectations. Hopefully, the implementation of such technology is predicted to be more promising in courier services resulting in positive impact on revenue of an enterprise.

he role that transportation plays in logistics system is more complex than carrying goods for the proprietors. Its complexity can take effect only through highly quality management. By means of well-handled transport system, goods could be sent to the right place at right time in order to satisfy customers’ demands. It brings efficacy, and also it builds a bridge between producers and consumers. Therefore, transportation is the base of efficiency and economy in business logistics and expands other functions of logistics system. In addition, a good transport system performing in logistics activities brings benefits not only to service quality but also to company competitiveness. Without well-developed transportation systems, logistics could not bring its advantages into full play. A good transport system in logistics activities could provide better logistics efficiency, reduce operation cost, and promote service quality. The improvement of transportation systems needs the effort from both public and private sectors. A well-operated logistics system could increase both the competitiveness of the government and enterprises. Transportation plays a connective role among the several steps that result in the conversion of resources into useful goods in the name of the ultimate consumer. It is the planning of all these functions and subfunctions into a system of goods movement in order to minimize cost maximize service to the customers that constitutes the concept of business logistics. The system, once put in place, must be effectively managed. Traditionally these steps involved separate companies for production, storage, transportation, wholesaling, and retail sale, however basically, production/manufacturing plants, warehousing services, merchandising establishments are all about doing transportation. Production or manufacturing plants required the assembly of materials, components, and supplies, with or without storage, processing and material handling within the plant and plant inventory. Warehousing services between plants and marketing outlets involved separate transport. Merchandising establishments completed the chain with delivery to the consumers. The manufacturers limited themselves to the production of goods, leaving marketing and distribution to other firms. Warehousing and storage can be considered in terms of services for the production process and for product distribution. There have been major changes in the number and location of facilities with the closure of many single user warehouses and an expansion of consolidation facilities and distribution centres. These developments reflect factors such as better transport services and pressures to improve logistics performance.
