For reference, air pollution related costs are approximately the size of the gross domestic product of India, Canada, and

Mexico combined. All these factors should serve as a sobering wake-up call that more must be done to protect human health and the environment. To address these complex issues, clean up the air and reduce the disease burden caused by air pollution, all potentially contributing emission sources must be identified and accurately characterized. Development of the emission inventory is the critical first step toward identifying and understanding the highest priority control and mitigation actions that can be taken to protect public health in a cost effective manner. To address these limitations, Lakes Environmental developed the Air Quality Management Information System (AQMIS) which enables agencies to conduct high resolution air quality studies over large areas such as by county level or entire states. This allows regulatory agencies to evaluate both measured and modeled air concentrations at any location and determine where the highest concentrations are located. Once high concentration areas are identified,

automated human health risk assessment modeling is conducted by AQMIS to determine what diseases and other health effects are likely in those areas. Armed with this information and an inventory of emission sources, regulatory agencies can identify which emission sources or groups of sources are causing or contributing to adverse health effects. Once the highest contributing sources are identified, appropriate mitigation plans, and regulatory programs can be developed to protect human health and the environment. AQMIS makes it possible to perform risk-based prioritization and direct limited resources toward solutions that will produce the greatest health benefits to the population, saving lives and billions of dollars in health care costs.
