Editor’s Desk W Yes, Quantum Computing is the Future!

Its time to unsolve and reveal the mystery behind quantum technology for the better good.

e are all encompassed by binary. Either it is one or zero; on or off! This binary imitation of things which are stated as binary code have pushed human race way beyond anyone’s imagination. Even though, Quantum Computing was first coined in 1980’ish, yet very few progress have been made in this field; nevertheless its real-time applications are likely to be a giant leap achievement. When it comes to the traditional classical representations of computational memory, it states only two states which, as described earlier, either could be ‘1’ or ‘0’. But, quantum computation could transform the memory into a quantum superposition of possible states, which could be ‘1’, ‘0’ or in between them. This superposition uses quantum bits called qubits, which provides two different representative states at the same time, isn’t it fascinating. If simply putted, Quantum Computing is the future. But beholding such entity for reaping out benefits in businesses is not an easy task. Integrating quantum computing in business methodologies for better result, is often considered as art. This art is portrayed by many techbusiness flag-bearers who keenly understands this vast concept and ways to implicate them in order to dominate the markets. Though the power of quantum computing is impressive, it simply doesn’t mean that the existing software runs a billion times faster. Even the quantum computers strives with certain problems that can be overcome by certain methods. Besides, as per the demand and QC functioning, we can say that it shows promising applications in various sectors such as Artificial Intelligence, Molecular Modeling, Cryptography, Financial Modeling and Particle Physics and much more. Insights Success understands this emerging industry and feels significant to feature the top companies that impeccably attained successful stature in this ever-evolving sector. Featured organizations, in this issue “The Most

Here is the cover, that features TundraSystems Global LTD—founded in 2014, that understands the drawbacks of CMOS based semiconductor technology. Classical computing implemented in a CMOS based semiconductor technology is approaching the upper bounds imposed by electrons on how small the device sizes can be shrunk and is unable to solve many intractable problems. The solution to these pain points lie in the Quantum Computing (QC) regime, but popular QC approaches of Dwave/Google/IBM/Intel/Rigetti using superconductors are not very portable and scalability is questionable on account of the deep super-cooling required. Thus, it is amalgamating the many developments from different academic sources such as University of Bristol, MIT, the UK Quantum Technology Hubs etc. to develop computational solutions in an all optical regime using Quantum Mechanics fundamental base or the Quantum Computational Paradigm. Since the foundation, the organization has been employing a novel volunteer model of remote distributed team working to arrive at where it is today whilst utilizing the personal financial resources of the principal founders. volunteer model of remote distributed team working to arrive at where it is today whilst utilizing the personal financial resources of the principal founders. Path Breaking Solutions TundraSystem’s product portfolio is a full QC stack of software and hardware elements, including an embedded Deep Learning based Quantum Error Correction solution. The organization doesn’t plan to build a gigantic quantum processor or compete in the Quantum race for the largest number of Qubits. At the heart of its Quantum Systems branded as TundraSystemTM is a 64-qubit Quantum processor. Each of these systems will function as a HighPerformance Computing Unit (HPC Unit) with which TundraSystems intend to meet the HPC/Quantum Computing requirements of a very broad spectrum. Low end users will be able to use just one to a few stacked HPC Units where as higher end users can utilize a large number of stacked HPC Units.

Thus, TundraSystems Global LTD. was founded in October 2014 to develop from ground up, amalgamating the many developments from different academic sources such as University of Bristol, MIT, the UK Quantum Technology Hubs etc. to develop computational solutions in an all optical regime using Quantum Mechanics fundamental base or the Quantum Computational Paradigm. Since the foundation, the organization has been employing a novel

Each of the TundraSystemTM HPC Units is a full stack Quantum Computer with a Silicon Photonics based Quantum Processor and hardware Peripherals. The software layers come with a Tundra Quantum Instruction Set architecture (QISA), a Tundra Quantum Operating System (TundraQOSTM) and the Tundra Cross compiler with which users will be able to port or quantumize their software algorithms from various other platforms on to the Tundra Platform. Built into each of TundraSystems’ HPC Units is also a Deep Learning based Quantum Error Correction. The TundraQECDLTM is also the organization’s stand-alone Quantum Error Correction (QEC) Solution using Deep Learning. This QEC solution is generalized and embeddable in any Quantum Technology solution, be it computing or communications that is in need of Error Correction. The Frontrunner The Principal Founder of TundraSystems is Dr. Brian

Antao, a Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from Vanderbilt University, USA, now settled in Cardiff, UK, with a very broad and diverse Computer Engineering background. It was Brian’s quest for advancing the computer technology beyond the Semiconductor era and into the realm of the next frontier that led to the formation of TundraSystems Global LTD. He first began exploring novel Microprocessor implementation methodologies based in Photonics that led to his adopting the Quantum Computing model based in a Silicon Photonics technology base as a foundation for the new company. Since then he has been the Chief Architect of the product suite that TundraSystems envisages bringing out to a wide range of Quantum Technology Customers. When Passion is the Driving Force Since inception, TundraSystems has been operating on a self-funded volunteer model that may be similar to an open source model. The Principal founder has been bearing the minimal costs involved on a day to day basis. Currently, the organization is actively seeking a seed-round investment and it is open to investor conversations to join in the journey of TundraSystems in order to build a fantastic product line in this burgeoning Quantum Computing space. Contributing a lot to the organization’s journey so far are the stellar teams of Ph.D. technologists, who have been chomping away at the qubits so as to speak to arrive at where it is today in its innovation journey. TundraSystems is a true Global company with its team being drawn from all over the Globe. The organization is very welcoming to enthusiasts wanting to join the company across different levels. TundraSystems is also very Gender-Balanced and has a good proportion of Male/Female ratio. Passion for what TundraSystem does is its main driving force. The team of volunteers it has on board right now are all actively working towards the goal of getting TundraSystems fully funded and transitioning over to full time staff of the company. Removing Painful Points According to TundraSystems, quantum computing is still in its early days and no company has fully developed a complete winning solution till date. However, TundraSystems is all in it to develop this fascinating technological advancement into something tangible and real that an extremely broad Costumer and User base is waiting on. TundraSystems’ unique differentiation is it wants the complete TundraSystemTM to be fully operational at ambient or room temperature and the company is striving really hard to achieve this. This goal might set TundraSystems a little behind others further ahead in the race such as IBM/Google/Intel etc. who have been forging ahead with deeply super-cooled systems.

As per the organization, it is indeed a lot easier to build a Quantum System in a super-cooled regime where many of the ambient effects don’t interfere or superconductors readily exhibit quantum effects. TundraSystems also has something to offer to this entire technology race in one of its product offerings, it has a very innovative embeddable Quantum Error Correction solution, TundraQECDLTM with which the company hopes to remove a very painful point in the Quantum Technology development cycle.

Next Frontier of Computing Products.

The area TundraSystems is leveraging the most for its product development suite is the Deep Learning field. The company is using a lot of results from the Autonomous Driving field to build a similar Autonomous Quantum Error Correction solution. This QEC Solution has its own custom-built Silicon Photonics Deep Learning Engine that is tailored now for the QEC, but in the future the organization has secondary market plans to develop this into a standalone General-Purpose Deep Learning Engine that can be used across the board for a wide range of AI/ML/DL tasks! TundraSystems is also leveraging a lot of the core Quantum Computing research reported in the open literature, but its technology stack right from the Quantum Gate Devices are being developed in house. Learning from New Experiences Everyday As a company the biggest lesson and experience that TundraSystems has gained in its journey so far is on bootstrapping on minimal resources. The company has been maximizing its efforts with no external funding at all. Additionally, TundraSystems is still in the phase of raising its seed-round venture capital. The organization is yet to launch a full marketing campaign. However, the company will start the campaign as it approaches near the half way mark of the product development and after some bit of Venture Capital infusion. Still the company has made its presence felt through various traditional channels including its own website, LinkedIn and Facebook pages. Preparing for Better Future TundraSystems is a Futuristic company and its aspiration is to gain a market leading share of the Quantum Computing sector. It has developed a great innovative product base and that will be the driving force behind its market leading aspirations. The organization is a tangible product development company and its value proposition is based on producing tangible solutions that customers can use on a day to day basis.

ith the advent of Internet and Internet of Things, each passing days more and more things including cars, cameras, equipment, speakers, health devices are getting connected to the internet. And since then where ever I look, whomever I ask, I’m seeing people going gaga over this technology. Now! Don’t get me wrong! I’m not against the use of IoT devices, I love technology and IoT obviously will play a big role in every industry. However, for a person like me, who is always paranoid about his security and privacy IoT does ring few bells. Personally, I’d never like to see my fancy self-driving car being controlled or tracked by some shady

personalities or someone listening through the smart speakers or someone hacking my phone’s or laptop’s webcam. The last thing I would like to be hacked is the security system of my house, which can eventually put my beloved family at risk. You may ask; why such paranoia? It is because I love my privacy! So! What should I do? Basically, we need to stick to few basic points and know the challenges that are currently plaguing the world of IoT. In this article I’ll share some of those challenges, that are affecting IoT devices.

October 2019 | 19

Ÿ

The Age old Issue of Default Passwords: If you are well versed with IoT, you might know the name of Mirai botnet. This botnet caused few of the largest and most destructive/disruptive DDoS attacks across the globe, and it is one of the best examples of the issue that occur while shipping devices with default passwords and not notifying customers to change them into a more complex one.

The one and only reason this attack was so successful, is that Mirai successfully identified those vulnerable IoT devices and used default ids and password to infiltrate and infect them. Ÿ Small Scale Attacks: Back in 2017, another botnet named Reaper came into foray. Reaper was potentially much more dangerous than the famed Mirai mostly due to its small-scale attacks that often evade detection. Ÿ Home Security: Since the invention of IoT devices, they are being used in home and office automation. For some which is a need and some merely a cool gadget. However, very small number of people

20 | October 2019

know IoT devices can expose the IP addresses of its users and can pinpoint the residential address. Later on, this vital information can be sold in the darkweb, jeopardizing personal security. Ÿ Accessing Vehicles: With the growing usage of selfdrive cars, a skilled hijacker can get access a smart car through remote access. At the end which can be lethal as anyone can have control over your car and leave you vulnerable to various crimes. Ÿ Ransomware Attacks: Ransomware attacks have recently brought the world of internet to its knees, and IoT devices are not completely protected against those ransomware either. A ransomware attack could potentially disable or limit the functionality of IoT devices and stealing user data at the same time.

So, at the end all I can say, adopting a multi-layered security while developing IoT devices is essential for security. Also by keeping few basic pointers like using stronger passwords and multi-point security systems one can avert the attack.

PHYSEC GmbH is a high-tech start-up founded by two PhD graduates of Ruhr University Bochum in 2014. The start-up offers IoT security solutions based on groundbreaking technology innovation “Physical Layer Security” which allows for new ways of protecting IoT systems. The vision of the company is to achieve leadership in the IoT security market and to make the digitalization safe for citizens, companies and organizations that are considered part of a country’s critical infrastructure.

he Internet of Things (IoT) opens lots of opportunities for businesses and increases the growth of connected devices which has resulted in an exceptional growth in data. The data shared by devices contains a large amount of private information and preserving information security on the shared data is an important issue that cannot be neglected. To make data more secure PHYSEC GmbH offers innovative security products and solutions for the Internet of Things ecosystem and enabling secure connectivity for various scenarios.

Solution for All IoT Devices The innovative Physical Layer Technology is the backbone of the solutions offered by PHYSEC GmbH. It makes the protection of IoT security environments at the system-level possible and allows for quantum-resistant implementations of these solutions. The main product PHYSEC offers is “IoTree” which is a full-stack protection solution for IoT systems. www.insightssuccess.com

Physical Layer Security technology binds physics (of devices itself or its communication channel) with digital world. It satisfies the need for systemlevel protection as opposed to conventional approaches, which are limited to securing individual chips or PCBs. This allows the protection of embedded software and information through the physical verification (or assessment) of all components that are part of the system. The technology lays the foundation for new IoT security solutions in industries with high security requirements, such as logistics, energy or public infrastructure. A system can either be a complex machine (production machines or ATMs are in our portfolio) or simpler IoT devices.

solutions for physical integrity assessment on the market. PHYSEC’s solution is widely applicable and does not need complex customization. The company’s solution to secure wireless communication is unique in a way that it is applicable on top of established communication standard, such as, WiFi, BLE, or ZigBee. While other solutions require novel ultra wideband communication (UWB).

entails the need for organizational progress, which means that the structure of the company has to adapt to new challenges and expectations. There is one characteristic about the IoT security market: trust between companies is the most important factor. Knocking Every Marketing Channel Today, website and social media presence are important parts of marketing concept, both for maintaining contact with existing clients and being seen by new potential customers. For existing clients, PHYSEC offers the possibility to subscribe to its newsletter.

Furthermore, PHYSEC GmbH can provide their clients with a full-stack IoT security solution; it offers a symbiosis of all three essential components of protection: Device, Communication and Platform.

The technology applications are patented and exclusively owned by PHYSEC. Therefore, PHYSEC GmbH offers a product portfolio unlike any of their competitors’. Furthermore, the product portfolios of most other companies only cover some components of the necessary security infrastructure an IoT company needs but PHYSEC GmbH, on the contrary, can provide their clients with full-stack protection. Another important point is the fact that most competitors’ products are not quantum-resistant, while the solutions offered by PHYSEC are.

An Innovator

Series of Achievements

Dr. Christian Zenger, Founder and CEO of PHYSEC, founded the company together with Dr. Heiko Koepke based on the knowledge and experience provided by the work on his doctoral thesis. He invented several novel Physical Layer Security technologies and has been awarded as “Innovator under 35” by MIT Technology Review. Zenger teaches at academic level at Ruhr-University Bochum.

Fibers of

Future

Rendering Solutions to Ever-changing Modern Connectivity

R

emember the old days when listening to the sound of a dialup internet for 15 minutes to connect was a sweet torture, or feeling of finally getting something to load was rejoicing. Those good bygone days of dawdling internet are a part of memory books now. Imagining such situation in recent times would fetch nothing but volumes of frustration. In this era of lightning speed where world has contracted on tips of human fingers, fast is not enough nor acceptable when you are dealing with hundreds of applications and tons of data. Internet has come a long way since its introduction in the form of ’network of networks’ back in 90’s for research purpose to business and commerce, driving the world economy. Many attempts from voice only network, Universal Mobile Telecommunications System to the recent one Long Term Evolution (LTE), were performed mainly working on the parameters such as speed and amount of data it can handle. Electric cables, co-axial cables have done a good job for broadband and Digital Subscriber Line (DSL). However they possess limitations in the form data leakages, lower speed and lower bandwidth. Driven by rising demand of modern industrial and residential purposes, technocrats have come up with a solution which is not only meeting modern day’s requirements but also

24 | October 2019

proving to be future inspiring. Fiber internet or optical fiber communication as they mention it has a very high speed of up to the order of 1000 Mbps or 1 Gbps. Comparatively, its conventional counterpart Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) broadband which typically has speeds in the range of 30 Mbps hardly ever. Thus, fiber internet can truly deliver expectations of contemporary digital world. Therefore, here presenting insights of fiber internet you need to know before experiencing this digital revolution. What is fiber optic internet actually? In the optical fiber communication system, data is transferred in the form of light through fibers made of glass unlike conventional data communication systems where electric signals are the medium of data transfer. A scientific concept named Total Internal Reflection (TIR) is employed in which data in the form of light emitted by a source falls on core of the wire and total internal reflection paired with its covering or cladding help to propagate information through the glass fibers. Naturally, very fewer losses are involved in light transmission as energy is delivered in packet configuration. Also transfer speed is astonishingly higher due to the fastest carrier in the form of light. Is it really worth the hype? A project where Google has poured $28 billion may or may not underline

its importance to you. But facts and comparison with existing data transmission systems will surely support the claim of why fiber internet is the fastest and the most reliable. Speed is one of the distinguished aspects of fiber optic internet as it decisively surpasses existing communication channels with its unmatched superiority. From a layman’s point of view, a video with a size of 30 MB merely takes 0.2 seconds which would have taken a long 13 seconds on a conventional broadband connection. Imagine your important work data being transferred in the blink of an eye enhancing your proficiency. Data leakage during transmission is one of the major concerns as it proportionately affects reliability of the network. Nowadays, data security has become the prime shift since breaching transmitted information can adversely disturb the dynamics of any institution, be it finance or defence. Inherently benefited with its light form transmission, fiber optic internet provides extremely higher bandwidth which no other cable-based data transmission medium can offer. Negligible loss of power over long distance and resistance to Electromagnetic interference also makes it an ideal tool for vastly spread geographical territories and lightning climatic conditions too.

www.insightssuccess.com

Modern Future

Challenges Equipped with various amazing features, fiber internet must be the most favourite choice of customers. Indeed, it is. But that doesn’t make it invincible. There are certain hurdles in its path restricting it from widely accepted, covering greater parts of the world. Cost is always the main obstacle when it comes to universal acceptance of any nascent idea. Undoubtedly, fiber optic internet is a revolutionary step in Internet Service Provider market. But its higher cost is forcing people to stay hooked to their conventional data transmission system. A normal broadband plan costs up to $20/month for a 20 Mbps connection which rises to $50/month for a lowest fiber connection with speed of the order 100 Mbps. Evidently, amount of data and www.insightssuccess.com

speed it offers is 5 times more but from a non-techy person’s perspective, price overpowers the perks. Involvement of many telecom companies may help to bring down its cost benefiting consumers in the end. One of the main reasons of fiber internet not penetrating remote parts of geography lies with its complex infrastructure. Laying fiber cables is a time consuming and a task to be done under technical expertise since bending radius can initiate data leakages. Business providers seeking opportunities can give solution to this problem which in turn will drop down the costs involved. Future Lightning fast connectivity is modern transient world’s necessity. People will try to fulfil this need using current

broadband options or in the form of wireless communication. But both the options have limitations over their upper scalability. Therefore fiber optic internet becoming mass connectivity mode is not a distant dream. Already people are seeking trade opportunities by facilitating trenching services which is the primary requirement of optic network infrastructure. The communities which are good at adjusting their sails according to direction of the wind are the ones who thrive in this dynamic world. Google has already boarded the ship. Sooner or later, more will join to explore this new dimension of modern connectivity. So next time if you’re wondering what to do about your sluggish internet connection, don’t forget about the wonders fiber internet can do.

industrial, consumer and infrastructure areas: from connected wearable heart monitor wristbands to connected pullovers, from connected security cameras to connected alarms, from connected parking lot sensors to connected displays of available places. The internet of things in turn enables smart tiers of technologies as smart homes, smart parking, smart traffic control and smart cities. The smart home hubs control communication among connected thermostats and stores, heating systems and other connected objects to enable home automation, energy savings and higher quality of life. The smart cities enable to reduce traffic jams and adjust public transportation in real-time, tighten security control and predict unforeseen events, reduce noise pollution and improve air quality. Constantly connected digital gadgets continue to pull further more people from reality to social networks and virtual worlds. The choice of remote communication still outfights real life communication. The picture of the family together with each member navigating within its own virtual world on smartphone starts to be everyday occurrence. The same picture can be observed in the trains, airports and other places. However, some people started to apply reasonable moderation. Even when people put away connected gadgets and back to physical world, the following interaction might be with nearby humanoid robot. Powered with same artificial intelligence as their virtual compatriots, they can follow conversations, understand individual social signals and respond appropriately. Their social interaction ability keeps improving, making future humanoid robots irreplaceable companions and assistants in nursing homes and hospitals, hotels and commercial stores. The industrial robots are separate topic. The global robot density in the manufacturing industries is

28 | October 2019

accelerating around the world and there is already at least one industrial robot per 100 working people in more than 20 countries worldwide. The ongoing trend to automate production helps industries to be more competitive on the global market and has positive impact on job market in many countries due to manufacturing stays at home instead of being moved overseas. The tangible shift in professions happens with all industrial revolutions. The current one is not an exception. Some professions get automated, freeing up people to do new tasks: data management, data interpretation, digital marketing management, robot supervision, process control, process moderation, intervention in unforeseen situations, quality control and so on. The automated places can enable work week reduction and equilibrate shift in social insurances caused by increasing life expectancy. The advances in technologies enable to process more data with less energy and smarter use available resources. The paradox in our society is that the focus still stays on profitability and growth over durability and climate sustainability. As consequence, the digital footprint on global energy consumption keeps increasing from year to year and can reach one fifth by 2030, regardless it is feasible to pursue industrial revolution at moderate pace within fixed energetic envelope until there is an excess of renewable energy. The years will pass. The artificial intelligence, big data and internet of things will become ordinary tools in many areas of our life just like electricity and telephones, internet and personal computers did during previous industrial revolutions. No one will be questioning them anymore. They stay under human control. The human society is free to decide up to which extent new technologies and innovations have to be validated, regulated and certified for future everyday use.

Expert’s Thoughts

Gisle M. Eckhoff CEO, DigiPlex

The Physical Security About the Author Gisle M. Eckhoff joined DigiPlex in August 2014 as Chief Execu ve Officer. He brings nearly thirty years’ experience in senior posi ons in the IT industry in the US, Sweden, UK and Denmark as well as at home in Norway. Gisle is the former Senior Vice President and Managing Director of CGI’s opera on in Norway, and has also held a number of senior management roles at both country and regional levels in CSC Computer Sciences Corpora on. The experience and knowledge gained from heading up the Financial Services ver cal in the Nordic region, before becoming Vice President and Managing Director of CSC in both Norway and Sweden, is of great value when implemen ng DigiPlex’ growth strategy in the Nordic markets.

T

he EU’s GDPR legislature will have consequences for every company doing business in Europe, including American companies. The new directive promises sizeable fines to anyone that does not take personal data seriously. Meanwhile, the data centre company DigiPlex urges companies to focus on another important aspect: physical security. The General Data Protection Regulation’s (GDPR) purpose is to harmonize legislation related to personal information across the EU’s member states. It does however also create radical challenges for American businesses holding information on EU customers. Come May 2018, when the legislation enters into force, companies will have publicly disclosed how the data is used, in addition to offering transparency for individuals seeking access to their data. The GDPR includes a sanction mechanism, and the fines for non-compliance can reach 4 percent of a company’s annual revenue. • Business will obviously change for everyone not taking personal information seriously. This will clearly raise awareness regarding how the data is secured, but it’s also vital not to forget where the information is located, says DigiPlex CEO, Gisle M. Eckhoff.

Moving data to safety American computer security company, McAfee, published a study of over 800 company leaders from different sectors. The report reveals that 50 percent of the respondents state that they would like to move their data to a more secure location. A motivating factor is the new EU legislation. The report also reveals that 74 percent of the business leaders specified that they thought protecting the data correctly would attract new customers. Ÿ

Data security is not just about protecting yourself against hacking and other digital threats. The overall security critically depends on where your data is stored. Companies who actively select a secure data centre to host their data will gain a competitive advantage in the market as the management of personal information is in the spotlight, says Eckhoff.

Physical security is forgotten While EU-based companies are in the process of adapting to the GDPR, Gartner predicted only 50 percent of American firms will be ready for the strict regulation by the end of 2018. It’s primarily the largest companies and public enterprises that are furthest along in the process of adaptation. According to Eckhoff, they are usually the ones that are the most concerned with data security and where it is stored. Fire and operational safety are two obvious challenges, but physical security also includes securing yourself against theft. Ÿ

Several smaller businesses and organizations keep their data servers at their offices, and the physical security in many of the smaller data centers is almost absent. If your data is stored in such a data center, where someone easily could break in and physically remove the hardware containing your information, then you are very vulnerable – both operationally and in relation to GDPR, says Eckhoff.

At DigiPlex’s data centers, several layers of security ensure the safety of the data and the personal information that is stored there. Physical security is one of the most complicated and expensive features when building or updating a data center. That is why newly established data centers have to reach critical mass, allowing them to store enough data to compensate for the large security investment. Adapting to GDPR One consideration to take, as we are getting closer to the implementation date of GDPR, is where your data center should be located. Several US based companies are already relocating their centers to the EU in order to comply. Multiple database providers are helping non-EU companies organize and segregate EU data from other personal information. The data center industry is well established in Europe, and some of the most cost and climate efficient centers are located in the Nordic countries. In the Nordics, the cool climate helps chill down vast amounts of hardware that otherwise would have been cooled down solely by electricity. Additionally, the electricity that is required by data centers to run their operations is supplied through easy access to affordable renewable energy. Ÿ

In recent years, we have seen political turbulence in larger parts of the world, Europe included. The stabile political environment in the Nordic countries is also a climate to consider, as the establishment of data centers is a long-term investment, says Eckhoff.
