mphasis on healthcare in India finds its roots in the Ancient times. Scriptures like Ayurveda, Charak Samhita by sages like Charak and Sushruta are evidence of the mastery that our forefathers held over the matters of health. Yoga, which dealt with overall health and is a lifestyle rather than a medical system, was also practised for well-being. While Ayurveda was a medicinal practice rooted and available in ancient India, changing times and lordships saw the introduction of other medical systems in India. Unani being one of them. With the colonization era, modernization and industrial revolution setting in, the circle further expanded to accommodate the homoeopathy and the allopathy system of medicine. Whatever be the system of medicine in vogue, Hospitals have served as institutes where people would come to get the required treatment and walk away cured and satisfied. With colonization settingin, the Vaidya’s clinic system gave way to hospitals that were set-up in British style and pre-cursors to the current modern forms.
The first general hospital in India was set up in 1664 known as The Madras General Hospital in Chennai (then Madras). This was followed by The Presidency General Hospital in Kolkata (erstwhile Calcutta). To teach the nuances of European Medicine, Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER) was founded in Puducherry. After independence, the Government of India streamlined the healthcare sector to benefit one and all. The Indian Hospital system is categorized into public and private. The Public Hospitals are owned by the Government and comprise of limited secondary and tertiary care institutions in key cities. Their key focus is on providing basic healthcare facilities in the form of primary healthcare centres (PHCs) in rural areas and City Hospitals in urban areas. The private sector caters to the majority of secondary, tertiary and quaternary care institutions with a major concentration in metros, tier I and tier-II cities. Healthcare, in India, has grown to become one of the largest sectors in terms of revenue and employment. Healthcare comprises hospitals, clinical trials, medical devices, outsourcing, medical tourism, telemedicine, health insurance and medical equipment. Boosted by growing coverage,
demanding patients, increasing expenditure by patients and providers – both public and private, the Indian healthcare sector is experiencing growth at a brisk pace. The healthcare market has the potential to increase three-fold to Rs. 8.6 trillion (US$ 133.44 billion) by 2022. Growth in Medical Tourism is posed at 22-25 per cent. The government's expenditure on the health sector in FY18 was 1.4 percent as against 1.2 per cent in FY14. It is planning to increase public health spending to 2.5 per cent of the country’s GDP by 2025. The world’s largest Governmentfunded healthcare scheme, Ayushman Bharat, is just a start. In terms of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), the industry attracted US$ 6.09 billion between April 2000 and March 2019, according to data released by the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP). Making the most of the growing market are the various hospitals in India which are putting-in their all to provide the best-in-class services. While profits do matter, healthcare services and hospitals have always found their roots in deep desires of people to serve society. In this issue of Insights Success, we take our time to recognize and applaud “The Most Recommended Hospitals In India”. These hospitals are inclined towards providing effective and timely healthcare services to every human being that turns up on their doors. The issue further features AMRI Hospitals, which brings to the table

How India won the Battle
T
he word child isn’t just a word but an emotion in itself. It elicits joy, warmth, hope, reminds us of carefree attitude, own childhood and at times fear and confusion too. Children, moreover, don’t just belong to and are the responsibility of parents, but the family and society too. Today’s toddlers are tomorrow’s adults and how well we care for them today determines how the future of our society is going to be. As such, children must be given proper care for their all-round growth and development. Physical well-being forms the fundamental pillar of measuring a child’s growth. Determinants of good physical health include nutrition, infections and infestation, genetics, environmental surroundings and more. Efforts to ascertain proper physical health in children starts early in the womb. Proper nutrition in pregnant women is the key to secure health aspects in children that are linked to nutrition. After birth too, breastfeeding initially and then wholesome food ensures that the child isn’t malnourished and is safe from illness arising due to it. To prevent infections and infestations too, the efforts start in
the pre-natal stage itself. Pre-natal immunization, tests, sonography etc. are done to determine any diseases that might trouble the foetus. After birth, immunization is provided against various diseases. However, some diseases require more than just one single dose of medicine. A Persistent Enemy For India, it took almost 70 years after independence to free itself from Polio, a disease notoriously hampering the growth of muscles in children and often rendering them unable to move and in acute cases, death. Polio or Poliomyelitis is an infectious disease that finds its mention in ancient art and was first recognized in its current form by the English physician Michael Underwood in 1789. The virus causing the diseases was first identified by the Austrian immunologist Karl Landsteiner. The virus generally spreads through infected faecal matter through the oral route. Consuming food or water that bears the virus is how the virus spreads, often taking down a close area with it. In 1908. The 19th and the 20th Century saw a major
outbreak in Europe and the United States. Jonas Salk developed the ďŹ rst commercially available polio vaccine in the 1950s. In 1988, the World Health Assembly launched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative to eradicate Polio. It was a time when polio paralysed more than 1000 children worldwide every day. Since then, the Initiative has been witness to more than 2.5 billion children being immunized, binding together more than 200 countries and 20 million volunteers to reach the common goal.
Polio by vaccinating all the children under the age of 5 years. By this time, it had been established that one dosage of the vaccine wasn’t suďŹƒcient for most of the children. Malnutrition and continuous exposure to the contagious environment had made the children weak and sickly. Hence they required multiple dosages to boost their immunity against the disease. The program gave repeated dosages to the children to help the cause. The Steps Taken
The Pulse Polio Program In 1995, India launched Pulse Polio immunization program which aimed at 100% coverage. The Vaccination campaign by the Government of India looked forward to eliminating
The Pulse Polio Program aspired to reach every single child in the remotest of location. A program at such a huge level required single-minded commitment and lots of careful social mobilisation plan for success. The primary plan was to:
WHAT MADE INDIA SUSCEPTIBLE Up until 2009, India reported over 60% of all global polio cases. The country, with its huge population, of which the majority was living under the poverty line, was a hotbed for the disease. Several factors made the disease so widespread, including:
Tropical Climate
Untreated Water
The climate in India is conducive for the virus to propagate around the year. The temperature dierences in various seasons are gradual rather than sudden which lets the virus be active around the year.
Floods, nullahs, stagnant water, lack of proper water treatment ensured that the potable water consumed by the poor was possibly laden with poliovirus among other microbes. Consuming infected water has always been the easiest way to infection.
Social - Discrimination The remotest parts of India are also the ones where social discrimination is prevalent. Prejudices based on caste, religion etc hampered the plan of the administration of the vaccine to every child.
Rumours
Open Defecation
The early years saw many rumours emanating in the remote and uneducated areas on the side eects of the vaccine. Some claimed it causes infertility, some linked it to other diseases. There were also rumours that the vaccine contained blood or fat of animals and rodents to make people lose faith in it.
India had been and still is struggling to curb open defecation. As already said, the poliovirus spreads through faecal matter. Defecation in the open puts everyone, especially young kids at high risk of infection.
• Immunize every single child under the age of 5. • Cases, if any, need to be reported immediately by the local health care workers, stool specimen be sent for further tests and the Outbreak Response Immunisation program to be carried out immediately to prevent the disease from spreading. • Follow-up or mop-up operations to be performed in areas where Polio cases have not been reported for a significant time(suggesting the eradication of Polio in the area) Once the basic guidelines of the objective were determined, the next step was to put the plan in action. This required: • Setting up of Polio booths in all parts of the country with prior notice. • Ensure a steady supply of vaccine by preparing cold rooms, freezer rooms, cold boxes etc. • Arranging the manpower which included healthcare employees and volunteers. • Ensuring that the vaccine vials are safe and under constant monitoring. • Immunising every child that makes it to the booth. • Identifying children who missed the dates, following up with them and immunising them. Apart from the action, educating parents and all citizens was the key to the successful execution of the Program. To ensure
that the message reaches out to one and all, the Indian Government reached out to many celebrities in different walks of life to send the message across. Many celebrities themselves volunteered for the cause, spreading the message and administering the dosages at certain polio booths. Catchphrases like “Do boond Zindagi ke” and “Ek Bhi Baccha choot gya, Surakhsha Chakra toot gya” were coined and repeated to stress on the relevance of vaccination. The Big Win Owing to the singular commitment of the Indian Government, the employees and the volunteers, partners of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative – WHO, Rotary International and UNICEF, India raged a war against Polio for the next decade. The results came positive in 2014 when WHO declared India to be Polio-free. There have been no incidents of Polio reported since then. Currently, poliovirus (wild) is in circulation in only two countries. The global incidence of polio cases has decreased by 99%. With the war won in India, which was considered to be a herculean task, an example has been set for the world to follow. The program continues to fight back the disease which still might be lurking around in some form. With every country and citizen pitching in their efforts, the world and WHO wish to see a polio-free world soon.

ccess to timely and correct medical care is a fundamental human right. However, it is one of the most difficult to provide. The more sophisticated and advanced the treatment is, the more expensive it is. Technology has boosted the degree of medical care that can be provided, however, it has also created a gap known as affordability. In a developing nation like India which is still battering poverty, the situation becomes even grimmer. One of the primary challenges hospitals across the country are facing is the high cost of advanced technology. In order to ensure better treatment protocols and medical outcomes, it is mandatory to invest in the latest technology. However, the high cost of such technologies and equipment often make it hard to afford for general patients. Amidst the high demand and low supply, AMRI Hospitals has always been focused on providing the best treatment protocols to patients, backed by advanced technology, which ensures quality medical outcomes. The hospital group boasts of some of the best physicians and surgeons, trained at the best medical schools from across the world, who continue to upgrade their skills and technical knowledge in a bid to strive for the stated goal of quality and affordable treatment. significant problem that confronts healthcare is the ability to correctly diagnose and treat cancer of all kinds. Both the rising burden of cancer and the fact that cancer is not one disease, but a set of complex conditions ensures that the problem remains of high importance.
Besides this, a staggering 5.2 million number of cases of medical errors and adverse drug reactions were reported in India by the Harvard School of Public Health. Most of these errors were preventable and occurred only due to the lack of clinical expertise and medical facilities. Therefore, there is a dire need for clinical decisions to become even more efficient through evidence-based, accurate diagnostics.

EVIDENCE-BASED TREATMENT- WHY DOES IT MATTER FOR
CANCER PATIENTS? Not only will this lead to uniformity and reduction of errors, but it will also allow patients the ability to access the right treatment suitable for them. Role of diagnostic evidence in cancer management There are numerous forms of cancer, out of which a majority are treatable and can be managed for some years if diagnosed early. However, there is no standard treatment that will work for all types of cancers or all patients. With changes in disease patterns, medical professionals need to find the appropriate diagnosis by studying the patient’s genetics and medical history, size and nature of cancer cells, etc. and share a tailored line of treatment based on these factors. In the area of personalized medicine, genomic testing will most likely become a standard practice in cancer care to provide access to the most effective treatment option. In the future, diagnosis based on the patient’s tumor profile, their response to treatment, and benefit from a specific treatment or therapy (targeted drugs, radiation, hormone-based medicine, surgery, etc.) will guide the direction of treatment. The majority of the deaths related to the disease take place when cancer metastasizes and spreads into the bloodstream and other parts of the body. Today, there are innovative tests that help oncologists detect cancer cells in the blood and determine whether the treatment is working post the start of the therapy. Such tests are today beneficial in evaluating the prognosis of metastatic breast, colorectal, prostate, and lung cancers. These liquid biopsies are useful to identify tumor development, impact of treatment, or as a surveillance method for people who have a high risk of cancer reoccurrence after being treated. Need for accuracy and targeted treatment Cancer treatment is a highly intensive process requiring very specialized clinical and diagnostic skills. However, there are concerns related to the substantial overuse of aggressive care for cancer patients. Incorrect or delayed diagnosis by undertrained doctors or misunderstood protocols can cause a delay in treatment, which can further aggravate the disease and hence, push the patient to opt for more aggressive treatment. The focal point of cancer research today is to make genomic testing a critical component of cancer treatment, which will January 2020
help predict the mutation in the disease and its vulnerabilities to drugs. Gene testing diagnosis has become a core part of personalized medicine as medical practitioners are looking for different ways to enhance treatment according to individual needs. For example, if a test can suggest accurately that the risk of cancer relapse is low in a patient, the patient can avoid more rigorous treatment. However, precision and accuracy remain the key. In today’s age, diagnosis and treatment go hand in hand right from the detection to disease progression to monitor the treatment success. In India, as many as 50,000 small pathology labs cannot afford to offer high-end diagnostics. Therefore, there is a pressing need to develop and bring advanced diagnostic testing techniques and expertise in India. Digital library CORE was the first laboratory in India to use Digital Pathology, and we built a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) bespoke, to make digital pathology easy to use. In essence, we did to pathology what PACS and RIS systems did to Radiology. This helps our partner hospital systems across the country, by streamlining pathology workflow – and both improving efficiency and accuracy of diagnostics. As a by-product, this has also led to the largest repository globally for data pertaining to Cancer Patients of Indian origin. This has significant implications for Drug Development, Therapy Selection, and many other use cases. Having such a repository is a starting point for understanding the disease patterns and specific variations for Indian cancer patients. Of course, pharma can then use this to develop targeted drugs for our population. In a nutshell! The critical challenge is to bring an attitudinal change within the industry on how clinical performance is linked to the accuracy of diagnostic evidence. The focus should shift from reactive to proactive diagnosis and treatment with greater collaboration between the best scientific minds and various healthcare stakeholders.

ach one of us wishes to be healthy – physically and mentally. Being healthy is the key to a happy life. Physical well being involves pursuing a healthy lifestyle to decrease the risk of diseases. Mental health is equally important as physical health for an active lifestyle. Proper healthcare helps maintain the balance between physical and mental health. Personalized healthcare helps the patients get the right treatment and cure. Proper diagnosis of the patient needs to be done and this information could be used to deliver the most perfect and personalized care to them. This type of treatment is beneficial to the patients for fast and easy cure. Not only does personalized treatment provide tailor treatments but also gives the opportunity to be preemptive. Benefits of Personalized Healthcare When it comes to healthcare, customizations are very useful. The disease may be same but the intensity, subtype, etc. differs person to person. Some of the benefits are: • Quality Healthcare: Many a times, medicines prescribed are general according to the symptoms of the patient. However, not everyone responds to a drug the same way. Some might have limited effect or serious side effects from the same medicines. Personalized healthcare helps predict the right therapy reducing the side effects of the treatment as much as possible. This improves the quality and the effect of the treatment. • Involvement of Patients: Studies show that only a percentage of patients take the complete medications prescribed to them. There are various reasons behind
January 2020
this like concerns regarding medications, side effects, and the growing culture of mistrust on the medical system. It is seen that when the patients are educated about their medication and therapy they finish the complete course. • Save Money: Times come when the patient has been given certain medication but has not been cured. In such cases, the patient has to keep taking treatment. However, personalized healthcare gives better therapy leading to reduced cost. It helps the diseased save money and time during their treatments. The cure is effective and fast helping patients recover comfortably. Opportunity for Hospitals Personalized healthcare has opened new doors for hospitals. Patients crave for personalized services that helps find the right solutions. With the boom of new technology and digitalization, offering personalized healthcare is easier now. • Better Treatment: Personalized healthcare provides the best possible treatment to the patient. This improves goodwill and name of the hospital. The quality of treatment is what matters to patients these days. The people choose the hospitals where they can be treated fast and without any discomfort. Such care can be offered through personalized healthcare. • Telemedicine: Telemedicine care is a service that provides live video visits to doctors. In this system the doctors assess the symptoms, diagnose and write medications. It saves the time and money of the patients. Online therapy is the next generation of healthcare. The
service is good for the patient and the doctors. Staying at home, the doctors can diagnose and the patients can get therapy. Even on the days of hospital holidays, they can help patients through these types of services. • Increased Revenue: The high wave of competition makes the hospitals look for ways to increase their revenues. Personalized care is one of the ways to do that. When the treatment quality increases, the patient traffic increases in the particular hospital automatically. It is like a chain of events. The quality of care, number of patients, etc. are factors increasing the hospital revenue. • Infrastructure and Information Management: Personalization of healthcare means large amounts of data. The database needs to be managed correctly according to each patient, disease, cure, etc. The hospitals need to improve their infrastructure to maintain information properly. Some hospital face difficulty in infrastructure, but personalized healthcare makes it vital for them to improve their facilities. The science of medicine has made incredible advancements in diagnosing and treating diseases. This revolution has created lucrative opportunities for the hospitals. Personalized healthcare not only develops targeted medicines, but also helps optimised use of existing drugs. Adapting to this approach of diagnosis and treatment will lead to increased participation of the patient during and after the treatment. The hospitals can develop them as their USP which, in turn, will help them beat the heatwave of competition. - Shree Varshita Gupta

averaged at 75% occupancy over the last six months. It performs 275 deliveries and around 500 surgeries every month. Carrying out operations at such magnitude isn’t an easy task. Apart from the sheer volume, there are many challenges that the hospital faces on its way to serve the needy. Some challenges are: Financial challenges and hospital productivity: With inflation and rising costs it is difficult to ensure financial viability. Maintaining patient safety: Reducing the risk of infection, as well as other potential risks, is crucial in ensuring a high quality of care and maintaining the organization’s reputation. Regulatory standards: Noncompliance with regulatory standards can lead to a disruption in operations, poor quality of care, safety issues, and substantial fines. Hospital security: Violence, infant abductions, patient wanderings, and theft of drugs and hospital assets are major concerns. Payment of bills is also a concern among the patients as the hospital doesn’t insist on advances before treatment.

FINDING THE PERFECT
IVF CLINIC
R
eproductive medicine is growing rapidly, providing options for people who face infertility challenges
IVF is usually effective, though not always immediately for all women, research suggests that if you’re considering assisted reproductive technologies to help you conceive, it is suggested that you chose your fertility clinic well and that can improve your odds of a good outcome. But with so many clinics out there to choose from deciding which one best meets your needs can feel a bit overwhelming. You can use the following pointers to help you chose a clinic that meets your needs. • Do some research: All fertility clinic may apparently look the same, but they are not, and it does not hurt to do your homework. You may want to consider inquiring about the success rate of the clinic. While inquiring about the success rates it is advisable to compare oranges to oranges so compare the success rates for your age group and also the kind of treatment that you plan to do. Once you are convinced about the success rates it’s a good idea to have a look at their accreditation you can either look for ISO, ISAR or a NABH accreditation in the Indian subcontinent. Also make sure that the clinic is registered with the ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research) • Ask Questions: Before you commit to an IVF clinic its always best to ask all the questions that come to mind even if you think they are silly. It’s your treatment and you need to be at peace at what you are proceeding with and it’s your right to know every pro and con about the treatment or any other question that may come to mind. Some of the questions you may consider asking
30
• The process of IVF per se • How many embryos do they transfer? • What is their embryo freezing program like? What is their contract time period? What will be renewal clause be? • Do they prefer a day 3 or a day 5 transfer? • The technique of fertilization --- ICSI for all or IVF for selected cases? • Do they have an identification system in place for the Gametes? • How are donors screened and allotted? • Will you need genetic screening? • Will you need sperm selection techniques? • What will happen when you get pregnant? who will you follow up with? • What will happen if you don’t get pregnant? • If attempting genetic screening – you may want to ask which lab they are associated with for the analysis? • Do they have a in house full time andrologist and embryologist? • Is it an all under one roof facility? • Find out if they have a psychological counselor or a patient support group: It is important for a fertility clinic to offer indicated medical treatment to help you conceive but it’s also important that there is enough emotional support available while you are embarking on one of the most emotional journeys of your life. Also, if the sessions with the psychologist are chargeable or are free of cost. • Consider the Monitory factors: Always take your financial counseling in written from the clinic. Consider have they given you all the inclusion and exclusion criteria’s in written. The inclusion criteria you may want to look for are gonadotropins, blastocyst transfer and luteal support medicine till Bhcg. Always gauge how transparent January 2020 |
Expert’s Opinion they are attempting to be in their pricing. • Trust your instincts: When you’re considering a fertility clinic, always trust your gut feeling. I think patients’ gut feelings are usually pretty good. “Your gametes are one of life’s most precious commodities take time to get a sense of the people who are going to be handling them for you. Consider how the clinic’s staff talk to you, what they say – how professional does the care feel? Use all of your senses. Is the care personalized and professional enough, so you feel comfortable?” • If applicable to you may want to find out more about the special program the center has: - Who is the andrologist attached with the center if you are going to need testicular sperm extraction?
- If you are looking for social fertility preservation: then you may want to know about their oocyte freezing facilities. Find out how many times you may need to do egg retrievals to freeze the optimal number of oocytes. What is the payment structure? How long will the oocytes be cryopreserved according to the initial contract; how will the renewal clauses be. - Fertility preservation program for cancer patients Even after all the above pointers only you can know which clinic suits you best and always remember A great fertility clinic isn’t just one that can give you effective treatment, it’s one with compassionate staff, clear pricing, seamless administrative processes and exceptional emotional support.

Tricks to maintain a healthy working environment
A
busy life can take a toll on your health. As we spend 7-10 hours of our day in our office, here are some ways one can make the work environment healthier. Stay away from passive smoking: Smoking leads to high blood pressure, Asthma, Diabetes, premature hair fall, premature ageing of the skin, multiple types of cancers & weak eyesight. If you don’t smoke but your friends smoke around you, you are at the equal risk of getting above mentioned diseases. Avoid being at such places where there is excessive availability of cigarette smoke. However, if you are bound to be at such places then you can do body cleansing and stay healthy: • Weekly detox: Take vegetable juice in breakfast and before 2 hours of dinner once to twice a week. Use seasonal vegetables like spinach, beetroot, carrots, bottle gourd, bitter gourd, ash gourd, etc. for making juice. Add mint leaves, tulsi leaves, coriander leaves, 1 inch of ginger, juice of lemon etc. for giving a good flavour to the juice. Add 2-3 slices of pineapple to make your juice irresistible. • Inhale good air daily. Wake up before 6 am and practise pranayama at a green place like a park. It will remove all the free radicals from your body and keep you healthier. On your birthday, distribute fruits instead of sweets or cakes in the office: Cakes are very rich in sugar, butter and refined flour which leads to lifestyle complications, especially obesity. Build a culture of distributing fruits instead on your birthday and other special days. Don’t take tea in those tea breaks: Tea/ coffee has now become a primary beverage for people. When you add milk and sugar to your tea or if you take more than 2 cups of black beverage it messes up with

your digestive tract making it more acidic, releases gases and you feel bloated. When you don’t take tea or coffee for the entire day the micronutrients are absorbed betters in the GI tract, your body remains alkaline saving you from headaches and acidity. When one quits tea, some fat loss around the belly is also observed. One can also experience more clarity and a feeling of freshness all day. If you like to drink something during your work then prefer coconut water, a glass of fresh buttermilk, lemon water, kokum sharbat or simply a good glass of water. Move more, don’t sit continuously for long hours: The long office hours are spent sitting at the same place. This leaves an adverse effect on health. The long term effects of excessive sitting are central obesity, Digestive disorders, heart disease, back pains, deformity in backbone and diabetes. Easy way to prevent yourself from these problems is to keep moving frequently. Stand up at your place every 30 minutes. Do simple stretches of hands, legs and back after every one hour. Every 1 to 2 hour get up from your place, step up and step downstairs of 1-2 floors. If you have any knee-related issue then you can simply take a brisk walk of 1-5 minutes. Drink water: It’s not a secret to people anymore how important water is for health. 70% of our body is made up of water so we should take enormous care of water. Drink 2-4 litres of water every day depending upon your height. Always carry a water bottle with you when you go outside. Keep water in glass, steel or copper metal. Do not use plastic bottles at all. Carry your tiffin, eat better if you have to eat outside: Ayurveda focuses on a sit-down meal with family and friends which is prepared by the ingredients suited for that season of the year, time of the day and your nutritional needs. you don’t have time to cook the food then get a cook for this work. When you eat food in a rush the enzymes and acids in the GI tract are not released enough and on time, this leads to indigestion. Indigestion is one of the biggest reason behind gastrointestinal disorders like IBS, constipation, hyperacidity, oesophagal cancer, other intestinal cancers & lifestyle disorders like obesity, diabetes, fatty liver, PCOD and heart diseases. It can be walking, swimming, dancing, cycling, yoga, running, playing sports like badminton, football, tennis etc. Join someplace which is near to your place. Do not join classes at a place which takes you more than 20 minutes to reach. If it’s more distant than that, there are high chances you will be skipping your classes for most of the days. Make exercise a routine and do it daily. Do special or more workouts on your holidays to keep your motivation up. Participate in competitions, marathons etc. to push yourself. If you have the authority then introduce yoga classes in the morning for all the employees. Nowadays many corporate setups are doing this. Always remember that healthy routine at the workplace will help you stay healthier and younger. You will save more money, accomplish your dreams and enjoy your life. ndia has and will always be a powerhouse when it comes to healthcare. Not many people are aware that, in India, the healthcare industry is even bigger than Information Technology (IT). Healthcare is an area where unlimited new opportunities exist especially relating to new modalities like artificial intelligence, smart health devices, healthcare delivery systems, financial aid for health and telemedicine. The time has gone when the healthcare industry was just based on doctor-patient interaction. It has now reached to real-time engagement without any geographical limitation. The entire Indian healthcare ecosystem, in general, is experiencing a new wave of opportunity. Tapping into this abundant opportunity, as healthcare providers for over half a century, Ruby Hall Clinic is doing everything in its stride to deliver value-based healthcare. Known to be Pune’s first nationally accredited multispeciality centre, it is amongst the handful of centres in India to be accredited with 9 NABH and NABL certifications and a Green OT certification for its operation theatres. January 2020
Ruby Hall Clinic(RHC) has been committed to those who seek its care. From a four-bedded nursing home under the stewardship of Dr. K.B. Grant in the heart of Pune, this medical institute has grown into a cluster of 800-bedded multi-speciality medical centres. The primary building is the 600-bedded unit at Sassoon Road, with a 130-bedded unit at Wanowarie and an 80-bedded unit at Hinjawadi. All of these are manned by a team of 300 consultants, over 650panel doctors and 2000 paramedical staff. This is besides the 24 peripheral centres across the state of Maharashtra. The Change Maker Spearheading the wheels of change is Mr. Bomi Bhote, CEO, Ruby Hall Clinic. After having worked for over 20 years in the corporate world, in 1997, Mr. Bhote left a plush corporate job to lead the hospital. In the last twenty-two years, his countless initiatives have made Ruby Hall a name to reckon with on the global healthcare map. A firm believer in continued education, Mr. Bhote initiated first-of-its-kind hands-on learning to retain staff and upgrade their skill sets with several initiatives. Even the

lowest-rung employee is encouraged to benefit from the advancement of technology and contribute to an employeefriendly transparent HR system. Under Mr. Bhote’s leadership, one of the biggest risks Grant Medical Foundation took was the foundation of a branch at Pune’s southern-most area in 2013 in the form of Ruby Hall Clinic Wanowarie and a satellite unit called Ruby Hall Clinic Hinjawadi catering to the IT part of the city. Both units have proven to do wonders for their part of the town. Organic Growth, Powered by Technology The late founder of Ruby Hall Clinic, Dr. K.B. Grant entrusted the hospital management with a unique legacy which continues to pave the path and inspires them to strengthen and grow. Enhancing its position as a recognised leader in the country, the hospital has strived to make quality patient care their priority. Commitment to quality is

an integral part of care at RHC. With the promise of best-inclass technology and quality, the hospital has seen several unique initiatives over the past few years. These range from a state-of-the-art cancer centre with three linear accelerators, Pune’s first da Vinci Robot for surgical precision, India’s first complete Einstein Vision 3.0. — an advanced 3D laparoscopy machine, Pune’s first cardiac cath lab, a multi-organ transplant centre with the city’s first heart transplant unit and Asia’ s first IGRT to name a few. The clinical specialist systems at Ruby Hall Clinic have a track record of excellence. When it comes to investing in the latest technology or even promoting organ donation in the country, RHC has the first-mover advantage further strengthening its position in the healthcare market. The hospital has always believed in thinking about tomorrow’s healthcare today. It has also left no stone unturned when it comes to procuring the latest in medical and surgical technology. corners of Maharashtra to experts at the hospital. Very recently, Ruby Hall Clinic tied with the prolific Rela Institute of Chennai for this very purpose. The institute now provides comprehensive, multidisciplinary and specialised services for liver diseases, cadaver and live liver transplantation under the guidance of Prof. Mohamed Rela, a world-renowned liver surgeon. The same goes for its association with esteemed cardiac surgeon Dr. K. R. Balakrishnan for heart transplants. Additionally, virtual clinics are another way in which the hospital has managed to reach out to the remotest parts of the country creating a safe ecosystem for the patients. Patient First As a socially responsible hospital, Ruby Hall Clinic feels a deep sense of pride and commitment to all those who place their trust in its care. Its ‘patient comes first’ policy has been a part of this very philosophy. As per the policy, the hospital has tied-up with financial institutions wherein any patient with medical insurance walking through the doors of the hospital can avail a loan for their hospitalisation costs within a matter of minutes. Another hurdle patients usually face is the lack of insurance coverage for OPD facilities. Addressing this hurdle, the hospital has partnered with a well-known insurance brand wherein cost-effective finance options are provided for OPD patients.

Gearing Up for the Next Wave nothing but the best care is provided to patients. Over the years, the organisation has won numerous national and international accolades, placing it on the global healthcare map. These range from the ‘Best Organ Transplant Centre’ by NOTTO, ‘Best Hospital to Work For’ and the ‘Best Medical Tourism Facility’ by the Government of India amongst others. Ruby Hall Clinic Wanowarie is Pune’s first hospital to receive a LEED Gold Certification for its green elements. Collaborating for a Healthy Ecosystem Healthcare, in general, is influenced by an array of factors the most formidable being the existence of top-notch medical institutions. The management at RHC believes that collaborative approach within the medical community is one of the key ways to improve the way healthcare is delivered to patients. As part of a broad outreach network, RHC’s peripheral set-ups connect people in the nooks and January 2020
The new year calls for a new way of work. Mr. Bhote feels that the only way a complete change in the industry can be brought is by moving to proactive care instead of reactive care. Historically, both healthcare systems and patients have viewed reactive care as the only option, mostly because of perceived financial barriers. Through the years, Ruby Hall Clinic has established itself as pioneers in reactive healthcare delivery. But somewhere, this needs to change. The hospital is now set to bring about holistic wellness and a shift in patient perception. Mr Bhote adds, “In general, healthcare is moving towards smart wearable technologies with which disease detection, prevention, and precautions become easier. From remote health monitoring to the prevention of chronic diseases, every healthcare paradigm has consortiums for IoT and wearable technologies. This is where proactive healthcare comes into play.” While patients must be compliant and commit to self-care, Ruby Hall Clinic’s role as partners in their wellness will extend to proactively managing their health — prevent diseases, detect them early, and improve healthcare results.

With the installation and commissioning of a new linear accelerator, it has become the only cancer centre in the state to have two such machines in operation. The hospital also uses the new 3 Tesla MRI machine – a milestone for advanced diagnosis. It is the first-of-its-kind to be launched in the region between Ahmedabad and Vadodara. The new MRI machine elevates quality of treatment in two ways: first, there is increased patient comfort due to 97% less sound during scans besides shorter run-time of scans by almost a third. Then, the fourth generation MRI, with advanced features like TIM and Brain DOT provides the advantage of precise diagnosis of neurological, orthopedic, oncological, and cardiac conditions. The Hospital is using indigenously developed online clinical management software SOLACE ,to create paperless procedures across all levels of care, including at the OPD level. The application is being used to record the patient’s clinical details; right from registration and examination in the Outpatients Department (OPD) to the purchase of medicines to subsequent visits or stay. This significantly reduces turnaround time, a sure indicator of efficient care. This in turn has helped expedite treatment procedures. Also, at OPD level, there has been a massive reduction of 80% in collection of hard copies of investigation reports by patients – hard copies are now given only on demand thus helping to save paper, time, and energy. This system also streamline the movement of OPD patients requiring CT scans and MRIs during rush hours, while scheduling noncritical and stable indoor patients beyond routine hours.
