29 You might wonder what you're looking at. Why is this page a Chromebook login screen? Why are all of the pages black? Well, that is how the 2021 school year was for Akins, wasn0t it? We logged into Zoom and saw this year mostly through a Chromebook screen, framed in black. The book is arranged chronologically (Summer/Fall/Winter/Spring). When 1school starts2 on page 14 a taskbar will appear at the bottom of the page. On the right side of the taskbar you will find a battery and clock. Those are two 1Easter Eggs2 we0ve hidden for you. The clock takes you through a regular school day (from 9:00 am 3 4:40 pm). The battery is an animation. If you flip through the book, the battery 1charges2 as the year progresses. You will also notice the colors of the page (Google Chrome0s blue, red, yellow and green) mimic the color of the battery. Our thanks to the Yearbook class (see page 135) and anyone who sent in photos, wrote stories and helped make this book a historic document worthy of the 2020-21 Akins Early College High School experience. YOU are ESSENTIALLYAKINS.

We are all essential. ESSENTIALLYAKINS.
This is our story.
It took each and every one of us to get through it as well as all of our friends, loved ones and animals.
Classes happened. Sports activated. Seasons changed. Projects occurred. A historic year became history.
Yes, it was that kind of year. And yet, we moved forward.
In 2020-2021 we learned of another triple term - the "Three Ws." Wear your mask. Watch your distance. Wash your hands.
In school we learned that the "Three Rs" are reading, writing and arithmetic.

STANDINGUP Social Studies teacher Sean McCarrey protested on May 31 in downtown Austin from the front of City Hall to the Austin Police Station. "I saw the video of George Floyd and I thought it was horrific. I didn't feel like I could sit by and watch this happen to so many people and not speak out," he said. "It was rough going but the nation definitely paid attention and people had some great and thoughtful conversations about race and society." Photo by Sean McCarrey (Faculty)
STANDFORSOMETHING By Aerie Staff Protect Us. Don't Shoot. A simple and bold statement. Something that many have never had to worry about and something that many others have to worry about each time they leave their home. During June, Rain Young (10) spent an entire week protesting in downtown Austin. "It was a great experience to be part of the movement," she said. "It felt great to have my voice heard and be able to speak up for what is right." Nationwide protests occurred after the death of George Floyd, who died in police custody in Minneapolis, Minnesota when an officer allegedly kneeled on his neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds. "We shouldn't have to be scared of people who are supposed to be protecting us," Young said." A lot of people think protesting is pointless and doesn't matter but it does." The protests continued for months. "No one should feel like their life and voice doesn't matter,"Young said.

I think that online classes are way different than in person learning mostly because online people don0t really pay much attention because of the freedom that we have due to online school.2
1I mainly focus on my most important classes first then worry about lesser classes and finally personal projects, However I've seen an increase in my procrastination2
1I was typically used to being close to people I know and like, but once online school started, I didn't get to be with them until much later, when I realized how to host a Zoom!!2
1It is a little harder to organize everything and stay on top of grades2

Story and photos by Mika Fisher Two freshmen made the Varsity baseball this year, David Cisneros (9) and Ryan Resendez (9). "Being a Freshman on Varsity is a huge honor,"Cisneros said. "There is a lot of pressure and hard work but it0s all worth it." They each have some special moments to remember this season. "My first tournament playing on Varsity I went 4-4 with 5 RBIs on the day," Cisneros said. Resendez' memory is on the mound. "My favorite moment from the season was when I started pitching against Austin High," he said. "When I started pitching it felt awesome that my coach had confidence in me." Long-term goals for the duo include continuing the push forward and hopefully to be on Varsity all four years of high school. Cisneros plans to always produce no matter what situation he is in and to play to the best of his ability. While Resendez strives to never let his coaches or teammates down. Looking forward to seeing what the future holds for these Varsity Freshmen.

FROMYOURPRINCIPAL Dear Eagle Family, The 2020-2021 school year - a year not like any we have all seen in our lifetime. A global quarantine due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Political and Societal unrest. A historic snowstorm. Though this school year was different from any other, we remained Akins Eagles. We came together to support our students and staff. We offered excellent education for our students and quality service to our families. To the seniors of 2021, my heart goes out to you. I recognize that your senior year was not what you envisioned, but you adapted, worked hard and succeeded. I honored to serve as the principal of Akins Early College High School. It is a privilege to be part of a community where parents, teachers, and and students strive to build positive relationships that support s academic and social growth every single day. WingsUP! ELECTIONREFLECTION
Amidst a pandemic and one of the most visceral election seasons in modern history, Akins students and staff got the vote out in 2020.
0I
think it's our duty as citizens to vote and have a voice in our democracy, as we are essentially electing who is representing us,1 Jasmin Arrieta (12) said. Courtesy Photo
By Luke Becerra (12) According to the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning & Engagement (CIRCLE) between 52-55% of registered young voters (18-29) took the time to cast a ballot in the 2020 presidential election between President Donald Trump and contender Joe Biden. This was a 10% increase from the 2016 election. For high school seniors who are 18, this was the first opportunity to vote. 0I want to be part of change by making my voice count by electing leaders who have common ideas and interests as I do," Jasmin Arrieta (12) said. Noemy Cervantes-Sainz (12) encourages young people to vote by sharing that you feel very proud afterwards and it doesn2t take a lot of time. 0I wanted to vote because it was important for me to be a part of who was going to be president for the next four years and if I could be a part of that, even if it is just one vote, I wanted to do it,1 she said. 0You might not think one vote is going to mean anything in a country with a billion people in it but the truth is it does." The results of the election were solidified on December 16 when the Electoral College declared Joe Biden the winner with 306 electoral votes to then President Trump2s 232. Joe Biden became President on January 20.

SERVEHERE SHANTIRAMDEEN Senior leader reflects on season
By Daniela Zarate (12) Wearing the Akins logo for her final season, Shanti Ramdeen (12) was prepared for some real challenges, team wise and precaution wise. Most of the starting line-up from last season graduated and pre-season was called off due to the pandemic. 0We didn2t have the pre-season tournament like we normally do to get to know each other,1 Ramdeen said. For somebody who has been playing volleyball since 9 years old, not being able to play the way she always has, has been a setback in the continuation of her sports career. Not only for her but also for her teammates. There were many changes and needed adjustments due to the pandemic and flexibility played a major role in following through with

this season. 0It was pretty hard getting used to the mask in the beginning but our coach had us practicing in them for a while so we got used to them,1 she said. Despite all of that, the team gelled quickly. 0Finding each other was easy because the chemistry we shared was amazing,1 she said The highlight of the season was the team being able to witness Ramdeen signing her letter of intent to play at a Division I school - making her the first athlete in Akins history to play Division I sports on an athletic scholarship. Having the team at the signing was a major plus for her. Although the season was not a winning season one, score-wise, it certainly was one for the record books. 0This was the best team I have been able to be a part of,1 Ramdeen said. SENIORREFLECTION By Sebastian Sanchez (11) Photos Courtesy Diego Hernandez After participating in Cross Country for four years, Diego Hernandez (12) ran his last race for the blue and gold in October 2020. 0I could have done better,1 Hernandez said 0After years of running I know I could have performed better.1 Being one of only two Seniors on the team, senioritis may have played a slight role in his lack of motivation to compete, but in 2020-21 there was more than graduation to worry about. He had additional responsibilities at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic and he also had a job. 0I really tried to balance school work and Cross Country," he said. June was when practices began for the team. 0Cross Country brought us back together. It felt good seeing my brothers again,1 Hernandez said. 0We followed the right protocols to keep us from getting the virus.1 His favorite team memory from the season was the September 25 Giddings Invitational. Hernandez came in 10th in the 5,000 meter running it in 18:22.7. 0I got to race with all my friends,1 he said. 0And a handful of us managed to get medals.1 Although Hernandez will likely not run on a Cross Country team again, he feels it was an essential part of his maturing, in and out of tennis shoes. 0Cross Country shaped me in a way that a sport never has,1 he said. 0It gave me a reason to work hard. It gave me so much confidence.1

SHE'SA TEAMPLAYER By Rocio Ugando (10) It's been a tough a tough year for everybody. Akins Junior Varsity football team had a rough season as well. With the pandemic, it was difficult to be able to get through, game after game. Deonne Gonzalez Topete (10), was one of two female football players this year for Akins. She played defensive line. "It was uncomfortable to be around a bunch of boys, but through the season, I started to get along with them." Gonzalez Topete said. Playing a defensive line position required a good amount of strength. "I struggled the most in physical strength because the boys were stronger than me," she said. Throughout this season, she had to push herself and work hard everyday, but unfortunately, this year saw COVID-19 playing a major role. The Akins coaching staff and players chose student safety over strength and conditioning. "The pandemic impacted me and the team by us not being able to go and use the weight room," she said, "our players weren't able to condition like some of the other schools." In her first year of football, she recalls one game that was the most difficult. "The toughest game for me this season was for sure against Bowie," she said. "They were playing dirty the whole time," she said.

When reflecting on the season Gonzalez Topete said, "I think my favorite memory from this season was when I pancaked one of the offensive line players from Westlake." she said. In spite of the struggles, lack of ability to condition as a team and not being able to use the weight room, #51 was all smiles under the helmet.

ACTESSENTIAL SHEKILLS VIRTUALLY A virtual performance, adapted for Zoom, was presented November 12-14. Students showcased an adaptation of a Dungeons and Dragons based dramedy. LIVESTREAM On December 11 the Akins Journey Theatre Thespian Society hosted a livestream telethon via their YouTubepage. $695 was raised for the program.
HOLIDAYSPECIAL From December 17-19 members of the theatre took part in, via Broadway on Demand, a 1940s style radio broadcast of 0It's A Wonderful Life1.
PAPERCOSTUMES The costumes for She Kills Monsters Virtual Realms were created out of paper. "It was an interesting aesthetic and was doable from home," Technical Theatre Teacher Jordan Andrews said. "The cast, the tech crew and the tech class all contributed to the masks, wings, and weapons that were all created from paper. We also splatter painted the dragon masks and claws to make them not look so flat."
COMETOGETHER Recorded over a seven hour session, in one day, She Kills Monsters"took some innovated design to pull off.

By Staff and Connor Austin (12) While the opening of the school year was a roller coaster of adventure for all students, it was particularly challenging for theater and fine arts students. 0As a theatre student, I started off the school year with a lot of questions and anxiety about how we could do theatre at all, considering all of the health and safety precautions that we have to follow now,1 Connor Austin (12) said. As a new Akins staff member Gina Hinojosa persuaded the department to put on She Kills Monsters - Virtual Realms as the first show of the year 2 and the first virtual show in Akins3 history.

The play is about Agnes Evans, a high school Senior who is dealing with losing her little sister, Tilly, in a car accident. She goes on a Dungeons and Dragons quest written by her sister and discovers, through the fantasy, the sister she never really knew in real life. Recorded in one day over the course of seven hours, the show mixed reality with fantasy and adventure, making it a perfect choice to be recorded in a Zoom setting. "We were exhausted and burned out by the end of it, but we did it,1 Austin said. 0We were one of the five schools in AustinISD to put on a virtual show.1 She Kills Monsters streamed via Broadway on Demand November 12-14.

By Julian Anaya (10) Valeria Pena (10), a line sergeant for the Diamond Dazzlers, first discovered her love for dance when she was 5. She would dance nonstop around her friends and family. 0I never danced on a team like ever- I was actually originally in cheer,1 she said. When she was in 6th grade she realized that she should 0actually take dance seriously because I2m actually kind of good at it.1 Pena dedicates a lot of time towards dance and participates in a vigorous schedule to make sure she2s on top of her game. Her day consists of waking up at 5 am to get ready, out the door by 6:30 am, finish morning practice at 8 am, head home to do school work, head to school for last
period, leave school and head to Buda for her ballet class from 7-8 pm, then to her pointe class from 8-9:45 pm. 0That2s just like typical Wednesday for me," she said. Even after all of the long and tiring days, Pena still manages to lighten up the room with her vibrant and upbeat personality. But when it gets down to business, she takes her role as a Diamond Dazzler seriously. 0I do think I play an important role on the team,1 she said. 0As a line sergeant, I lead my teammates well.1 Looking forward, she hopes to make a career out of dance and attend Julliard to pursue her dreams of dance.

GOODDEFENSE By Alex Aguilar (10) During 2020 Erik Douglas (10) had some extra time on his hands, as we all did. He decided to fill that time with a new skill - Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. His class had a lot of older people, who were much stronger than him, but that didn0t stop him from competing with them. In fact, when he competed for his green belt, his partner made him bleed. 1Right in the nose,2 Douglas said. His sparring partner got behind him and when he rolled across the
floor to escape, his partner0s knee met his nose and blood started pouring out. After the roll, he pinned his partner and choked him out leading him to win the spar - and advance in his belt. He continues to train every day, aspiring to be a part of a tournament, but hasn0t gotten the chance due to the pandemic. 1Everything about it is thrilling, not one day goes by where I don't want to do it,2 he said.

JANUARY
RIOTATOURCAPITOL
By Jonathan Salazar On January 6, the day when Joe Biden would have his presidential election win officially certified by Congress, the nation watched in horror as a mob of supporters of former President Donald Trump ransacked the U.S. Capitol building. Five people were killed, the 0temple of democracy1 defaced and the democratic process was temporarily halted when members of Congress were forced to take shelter moments before their chambers were overrun by the mob. Although it took all day to recover from the mob2s actions, eventually security personnel gained control of the situation and members of Congress finished the process of certifying Biden2s election as president. Akins Eagle2s Eye Newspaper distributed a survey that asked students to share their reactions to the events of January 6.
What was your initial reaction when you saw images of what was happening at the Capitol on January 6? 0Laughing at it, and I was very upset that they were able to get in without really any consequences and that BLM was being tear gassed and maced because we are protesting peacefully about a wrongful death that happened by police brutality, that we have been fighting for decades, while they were mad that their president Trump lost. So that's why I was upset and laughing,1 Drew Johnson (9) said.
0I
would like to say I was surprised, but I wasn't. I knew something like this was going to happen sooner or later with rising tensions in this country, and I was/am more disappointed than anything,1 Morgan Messer (9) said. How did it make you feel to see the Capitol being ransacked? 0I was annoyed to see white supremacists running around the halls of the Capitol over a man losing the election when BLM was getting shot and gassed for peaceful protests,1 Shay Darroux-Edwards (11) said.

What needs to happen to protect the democratic process of electing presidents in the future? 0There needs to be extra security, and the people need to know they WILL have consequences if they do anything close to what happened on January 6,1 Cameron Alejo (10) said. 0We need to start educating people and stop protecting their feelings. We can handle it, we're big kids. We need to stop showing just one side of the story. Tell us why it was bad that they raided the building but also tell us why they felt the need to do it. Tell us why it was a good protest at first, but soon turn into tearing down and burning down a city. We need to start educating better and we need to do it now because if we don't this will start to be a normal thing,1 Cayla Flores (9) said. 0I think while we still need to protect our freedoms to protest and petition the government, we should keep it to PEACEFUL protesting and what we saw that day was far from it,1 Messer said. (This article is an edited version of one that ran in the February 26 issue of the Akins Eagle's Eye.)

By Rae Kimble (11) I just knew that the 2020-21 basketball season would be the season of all seasons for me. I say this because I wanted to make the Varsity team and I wanted to play alongside my best friend, Brianna Wilson (12). I remember Wilson telling me in the car after one of our games last season that next season was going to be great. Fast forward to basketball season 2020-21. I made Varsity and was really hoping things would be back to normal as everyone else hoped. Then things just got worse, like our season. The worse COVID-19 got, the worse we got. Players were exposed and could not play, and some actually got it. We barely had eight players. Couldn0t COVID-19 skip us? We were barely making it as it was. Akins Varsity was mainly an entire new team, including me and it is a different team dynamic. There were only four girls familiar with each other0s playing style. We all made the best of what we had to work with. This season was challenging because of the pandemic obviously but also because we wanted to win. We would start out in the first half keeping up and maintaining our stamina. But...something would happen after halftime or right before halftime. We would lose our mojo and as encouraging as Coach Routt is we became lost in our game. We ended the season 0-12 in District. I feel we won just by showing up. We had temporary standstills, we had sickness and we had very few players, but we had a season. A historic season. One for the record books.

Students participate in recording the history and contributions of minority leaders in the Austin area. By Linda O'Neal (Faculty) Your History, Your People is a podcast project that gives students the opportunity to research minority leaders in their community who have changed systems at the local and state level. Linda O0Neal, a U.S. History teacher, wanted to balance out the traumatic American history of marginalized people with stories that celebrated minority leaders who have made historic contributions in their communities. As a history teacher, O0Neal was often frustrated with painting people of color as victims of history, rather than the makers of history. She applied for a $10,000 grant from AustinISD's Ed Fund, and won. With her grant, she was able to buy equipment and teach her students how to do a professional podcast. This year, her students interviewed DaShawn Barr, the leader of Peace in Austin, Chaka Mahone, front man of the band Riders Against the Storm, Ishia Lynette from Austin Justice Coalition, Clifford Gillard of Capitol View Arts and David Rice, author of Heart-Shaped Cookies.
In early 2020, Robert Tafoya (12) came to Yearbook Adviser Sean Claes with an idea to start a radio station at Akins. Then the school year abruptly ended. When school began to open up to in-person students in November, Tafoya connected with Claes right away and got the short-range indie radio station going. Tafoya programmed a holiday only music set for December and updates the playlist monthly to include a mix of Billboard radio hits. The signal only extends to radios on or near campus, so if you're in the immediate area of Akins Early College High School, tune in to WAEA, which stands for Dr. W. Charles Akins Eagles Austin Radio. It's at 91.1 FM on your radio dials. Wings Up! Jennifer Ponce (12)

Photos and story by Sean Claes (Faculty) The Akins Journey Theatre chose the 2007 Pulitzer Prize winning drama Rabbit Hole as their One Act Play for University Interscholatic League competition in 2021. The story centers around Becca and Howie Corbett who lost their 4 year old son, Danny. A tragic accident takes the life of the little boy when 17-year-old Jason Willette hits him with his car after Danny ran out into the street. The production takes place eight months later, as the family attempts to deal with their grief and guilt and try to move forward with life. The play advanced past the first round of competition on March 1 and was designated as the alternate play for Bi-District on March 7. In between performances, they had performances in the Akins Parking lot March 4, 5 and 6. "I am so proud of our company. Their hard work and dedication are inspiring and a constant reminder of why we do what we do," Theatre Director Audrey Sansom said.

Criminal Justice department's Law Pathway leads the way
By Staff The Criminal Justice department's Law Pathway includes a robust courtroom advocacy training program for high school students. Through the Eagle Aid Program, students assist on wills, immigration documents and family law matters. That makes Akins the only high school in the country where students work on real cases. The Legal Eagles also compete in mock trial contests and on January 30 their White Team, consisting of Devin Ritter (12), Teah Eveleth (12), Coral Rolon (12), Kelsey Wood (11) and Carlos Rebollar (10) placed 3rd in the YMCA's State Mock Trial competition and qualified to compete in Nationals which which will be held Summer 2021 in Chicago (after this book prints). "They have represented Akins with humility, respect and dignity," Law Adviser Carlos Garcia said.
Pistel Knox (12)
LEGALEAGLES During the virtual mock trial on December 5, Amarye Tovar (12) competed and placed first in district. 0Teams weren1t really the same this year. And it was just the struggle that everyone had to go through, because of like, Zoom issues, trials had like, connection issues, people were getting kicked out of trials. So, it was a bit of a struggle, but we all got through it, and a lot of our work showed,2 Tovar said. WHITETEAM Members of the National Qualifying White Team are: Devin Ritter (12), Carlos Rebollar (10), Kelsey Wood (11), Teah Eveleth (12) and Coral Rolon (12).

CREATIVITY GOESON
Artwork created by Edith Tinney (11)
Creativeness pours from the chaos of the pandemic as many art students trade their brushes for pixels. By Rhiannon Ferguson Despite most students learning remotely, art classes continued to thrive throughout the year. Although art students are used to the school providing them with all their necessary supplies such as paint, colored pencils and canvases, many students were able to make do with what they had and conjure up beautiful pieces. Alongside traditionally created works, digital art became a very popular medium among art students, as they had more freedom to indulge in it than ever while classes were virtual. Through the gallery building website ArtSteps, art teachers were able to compile student's artworks in a 3D space to make the art viewing experience more immersive for students and parents alike.

For Teah Eveleth (12) it0s what she has participated in during this school year. Teah usually does her classes online and sometimes finds it hard to stay consistently focused. 1I feel like all day long you0re on your laptop, so when school ends, it0s really hard to then get out your laptop again and do even more homework.2 She did attend in person some of the time during the school year for her Law Practicum. In fact, for the

last few years she had been participating in the Legal Eagles and was part of a team which competed in Mock Trials. Her team qualified for Nationals this year and hopes to travel to Chicago for the competition. 1It0s something that I actually enjoy doing,2 Eveleth said. 1I would say it motivates me to do better in my other classes.2 She is also in cross country, track and field, and currently the only pole vaulter. During a track meet in March, she broke the school record. 1I hadn0t pole vaulted in a while, so I was like, 3this probably isn0t going to go well0, and then, I just somehow cleared 8062.2 No matter what the future brings, rest assured, Eveleth will come prepared because of her time at Akins and her top-notch determination.

TAYLORMADE By Kalani Peters-White (11) Football to many people can mean many things. Family legacy, a passion, an activity to pass the time, a way to stay active. For Jordan Taylor (12) a multitude of causes has kept him playing. Jordan Taylor was number Three, a wide receiver and cornerback on the Varsity football team. His reason0s for playing aren't your traditional 1I love the sport so I play2 reasons. They0re more of "mind and heart" than "skill and strength." In addition to going to football practice and games, Taylor was also working and attending online classes. What makes a student continue playing football during a pandemic when he has so many other responsibilities? He had already spent the last three years playing in the game and working hard to stay, to him it

would only seem right to push forward and see it through. "It was my last year so I thought 'why not commit,'" he said. Playing football made a difference in him, in playing the sport he realized he0d gain more than the physical aspect. He had learned the meaning of commitment - especially through hard times cooperation and social skills. In addition, it helped motivate him academically, gave him more responsibility, helped discipline him and give him more accountability. 1It helped me grow as a person,2 he said. When posed the question of if he regretted spending so much time and effort on the sport, he responded no. He believes that all that effort not only went into the sport but into him. That all those practices and training helped him in the long run by shaping him

into a good person. When summing up the last four years Taylor said, 1playing football is gonna make you a better person, you develop a lot of character playing." And that character... that growth... was worth the work.
