TALKING THE TALK
Ricki Lake Returns To Daytime TV With A New Look & A New Attitude BY ALEX S. MORRISON
I
T’S IMPOSSIBLE NOT TO ROOT FOR Ricki Lake. From the moment the 18-yearold New York native was plucked from obscurity by cult film director John Waters to star in his 1988 film Hairspray, her plucky charm, heart-on-her-sleeve persona and biggirl-with-a-big-smile appearance made her immensely endearing. So it was no surprise when her daytime talk show debuted in 1993 and made her a huge hit, second only to Oprah. Now, nearly 20 years later, Lake is back after an incredible year in which she appeared on Dancing With The Stars, released a book, lost 20 pounds and got married to second husband Christian Evans. She is also throwing her hat back into the talk show ring, returning to daytime TV with The Ricki Lake Show, which seems poised to fill the void Oprah left behind. We recently spoke to TV’s impressively svelte sweetheart… Tell me a little bit about working with John Waters and how those films launched your career? John was my education in this business. I was plucked out of complete obscurity. When he picked me to play Tracey Turnblad, I had no idea how that would change the course of my life forever. He’s been such a mentor to me. One of the things I talk about in the book I wrote that came out a few months ago is
that he instilled in me ways of looking at this business and keeping things in perspective. He sat me down for a talk before Hairspray opened. I wanted to be famous, but I didn’t know what that really entails. He sat me down when I was 18 years old and said, “Look, this is really going to change your life. I want you to keep three things in mind. Always stay true to yourself. If you’re going to read and believe the good press, then you’re going to have to believe the bad. I’m blanking on the last thing, but it was these three things that have always kept me sane. I really have not lost touch with who I am. In this crazy business, you get all these amazing perks, money, and a lot of power. But I am really still that overweight, awkward girl that I was when he found me. You’re of course talking about within. I saw the photo shoot for your new show and you don’t look overweight to me. I’m not. But I’m certainly not looking like Jessica Alba, and I never will be. I will always be a work in progress, always telling myself to appreciate what my body can do, how far I’ve come, and not beat myself up that I haven’t attained the unattainable. Do you think that relatable aspect is part of your success? I’m not very threatening. I’ve lived a very candid life where I’ve been open with my

hardships and my triumphs. I think people find that refreshing. When you see these movie stars like Jennifer Anniston, you think “I can’t relate to her in any way.” I live a very normal life while having some perks that certainly weren’t handed to me. The weight thing evens the playing field. We all can relate to that. It’s something part of me doesn’t want to keep talking about, because it is perpetuating this obsession that we all have. It’s the thorn in my side that won’t go away. But I’m not beating myself up because I have 10-15 lbs to lose. I want to work, through this show, towards all of us getting healthier with our self-esteem and appreciating what we have. Early on, I expected you to be this big movie star, so it was interesting that you did a daytime talk show. What was the initial appeal of that concept? To be honest, it was a job. I wish I could say I decided to take my career in this direction. But, as a character actor, you get what you get. For me, I had run this course of being the heavyset girl that wins over the audience. It worked to a point. I did a bunch of jobs from the age of 18 to 21, but I also gained 60 lbs in the process (reaching 260). It became not cute anymore. I wasn’t the “it” girl, but lucky for me this talk show idea came around. I was one of a hundred women who came in and interviewed, because they wanted to do a younger-skewing talk show. It wasn’t a calculated move: It was just the next thing to come along, and lucky for me it worked. The audience rooted for me and got behind this genre. Who was I at 24 years old to have this kind of platform? I didn’t even know who I was, let alone giving people advice. It was kind of absurd. Was there ever any consideration of going back to focusing on acting? Ultimately, the talk show is where I’m most comfortable. I love acting: I’ve done over 20 feature films and worked with all these incredible people. But at the end of the day, I think I’m better at being true to myself, candid, and connecting with people on a real level. I treat everyone with respect, and I’m very curious about humanity and what makes tick. If I have any gift, I think it’s being completely raw and honest about my life and try to learn from others. To bring it back, after doing 11 years of doing my talk show, I feel like it’s such an incredibly opportunity. I think I’m going to be better this time around. I feel like I know myself a lot better. I’m 43 years old and my life
experience- I’ve had struggles and come out the other side. Why did you walk away form your last show at the height of its success? It was really 9/11 that prompted me to clean up my personal life and my professional life. I had just given birth, I was living in New York, doing my show day in and day out. I really appreciate having had that platform for 11 years, but I felt like I needed to do something where my legacy would go beyond baby-daddy, cheating mama-drama. So I moved to California and ultimately divorced my ex-husband. I made a little documentary called The Business of Being Born, which I funded myself and worked on for 3 ½ years. We took it to film festivals 5 years ago, and it was this tiny little movie about birth options that helped raise awareness and educate consumers about the options they have that are slowly being taken away in the birth industry because of money and fear of litigation. I felt like this was my passion, because I had a personal experience with having my second son at my home. It was really seeing this little movie’s impact that prompted me to go back to daytime television, because I have something to say. It’s not about getting people to think what I think or change people’s opinions. I just want to have a smart environment where everyone can be heard. How will the new show be different? I’m now a mother trying to raise my teenage son and have a blended family. I just remarried and have an ex-husband to deal with, and I’m trying to love my body at 43 and give myself a break. All these things I struggle with, I think everyone who grew up watching my show struggles with. The idea is to do something a little bit more involved and more substance than my old show, but still a good old time. Do you see the new show getting into more sociopolitical issues? I’m not an intellectual, but I feel like I could do a show that would be informational and accessible to everyone. That is my goal for the show. Times are so hard these days, with all of these huge issues that we’re forced to think long and hard about. To have an hour each afternoon where people can learn from one another, support one another and have a great time… I have high hopes that people want this kind of show. I’m really excited to be back at work.

The summer stock shows I did were part of the Atlanta, St. Louis, Kansas City, Dallas circuit…almost every summer as long as I can remember. I did many of those shows for Theater of the Stars producer Chris Manos including Sound of Music , Brigadoon, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and more. It was always very special, especially being from Georgia. A lot of my friends would come up. And my daughter’s first professional job was the Music Man for Theater of the Stars and she was the same age I was when I did my first show. When Chris called and asked me to do “The King and I”, I was elated because its one role that I never got to do. I had been asked to do Anna, but it always seemed like I was contracted to do something else. So here I am, coming full circle.

While she went on to appear in numerous Broadway productions, she returned to Theater of the Stars many times over the years to appear in several of their summer shows. And throughout her career, Victoria has graced the stages of the nation’s major summer stock and regional theatres in virtually every leading lady role in musical theater. However, she never appeared as Anna from “The King and I” until now! Currently living and working in New York, Victoria continues to perform and teaches at The Voice Studio in New York City. She has maintained a practice coaching professionals, adults and young/gifted students in voice, audition technique, and “actor in song.” This is a big year for Theater of the Stars as it celebrates its 60th season. My father retired from the army in Georgia and we lived in Columbus and my mother drove me up to Atlanta one summer to audition for The King and I with “Theatre Under the Stars” at Chastain Park. That was before they moved to the beautiful Fox Theatre. I got the part, stayed up there and it was my first professional show. After, I went back to Columbus to finish school and I did 20 musicals in 4 years. Then I went to New York, went to school there and started working for eight years in New York on various Broadway shows. But every actor who

THE ORIGINAL PIN UP GIRL: BETTY PAGE
an eclectic southwestern eatery & tequila bar . est. 2000
INsite Interviews Film Director and GSU Alum Mark Mori
BY DAVE COHEN
B
ETTY PAGE, BORN BETTY MAE Page in 1923 in Nashville, Tennessee, is one of America’s earliest pinup models. With her jet black hair and trademark bangs, Page, who was a college graduate, became one of the earliest Playmates in Playboy Magazine as “Miss January 1955.” A pop-culture icon who had been out of the public eye since the mid to late 1950’s, Page, and the images she created, to this day, continues to show their influence in fashion and sexuality. Georgia State alum Mark Mori, BA, ’82, has taken on the project of uncovering the stories behind the myths regarding one of this country’s earliest sex symbols as the producer and director of the film, Betty Page Reveals All. What was it about Betty Page and this project that captured your interest? Well, a lot of my other films and documentaries have been political, investigative, you know, what you might call pretty serious subjects. This one is more about a cultural icon, a cultural phenomenon and I would have to say that it was the most fun documentary that I’ve worked on. Why to you think that there is still an interest in Betty Page and her pinup photos all these many years later considering what we’re exposed to these days? The interest today is greater than ever. Beyonce even made a video imitating Betty Page. The audience today is young women. It has changed completely from men in the 1950’s to young women today and I think it has to do with a
Interesting because, posing for the kinds of photos that she did in the 50’s, she herself portrayed an unattainable image for most women during that time period. You know, in the 50’s the ideal for women was more to be a housewife and a mother, which maybe is a little different today. Betty’s audience was overwhelmingly men and it was not even considered acceptable in mainstream culture. Betty Page did not achieve mainstream success or pop culture status even though she was the most widely published model and probably the most photographed model of the twentieth century. Although she did do a little mainstream acting during her career, she simply was a pin up girl. She simply was a pin up girl but what I think is clear now is she is the best person, the best actress in a still photograph. I mean, you have to act in a way that the images are captured at the moment but what she portrays in a still photograph, she is the most successful ever at that and that’s what people are relating to today. So does the film cover her whole life or just the period in time when she was the most popular pin up girl? It tells basically, her whole life. From birth, her whole modeling career and a lot of stories that people don’t know. All people know about Betty Page is the photographs so we get stories behind the scenes and we see photographs and film that have never been seen before. We found people with photos that had not been published before. We find out what she was doing during those forty-five years that she had disappeared and then what happened after she had reemerged and she became this major cultural icon.
THIS ONE IS MORE ABOUT A CULTURAL ICON, A CULTURAL PHENOMENON AND I WOULD HAVE TO SAY THAT IT WAS THE MOST FUN DOCUMENTARY THAT I’VE WORKED ON.

OTTER FROM ANIMAL HOUSE IS ALL GROWNS UP At 64, the Versatile Actor Has Compiled Quit a Career
BY DEMARCO WILLIAMS
L
ET’S GET THE OBVIOUS OUT the way: Tim Matheson will forever be remembered as the smooth-talkin’, hijinx-causin’ Otter from the ’78 comedy classic Animal House. Over the 30+ years since that fraternity favorite, Tim’s earned a rep for being that guy who pops up in pedestrian big-screen comedies (Van Wilder, Drop Dead Fred) or plays supporting roles on the small one (The West Wing, Burn Notice). What isn’t as well known about the Cali native is that Matheson is also an in demand voiceover actor (Jonny Quest, Scooby Doo! Mystery Incorporated) and accomplished director (Psych, Suits). Matheson, 64, even gets behind the camera for a few episodes of the CW dramedy Hart of Dixie, which begins its second season on October 2. He plays Dr. Brick Breeland on the hit show too. But that shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. After all, Otter was pre-med. Tim, describe your magical Hollywood ride. You know what? It’s a dream come true for me. I am flabbergasted sometimes that I’m back working in Burbank where I grew up and on a lot that I snuck into when I was a kid, because I always wanted to be in the movies. I always wanted to be an actor and a director and to be fortunate enough to still be actively doing that, and I feel like I’m starting to get the hang of it, so it’s encouraging. Most people in your field won’t make it past two or three movies. What are some of the secrets to just sustaining for decades. I think one thing one has to do, and I learned this at an early age, is that when I worked with Lucille Ball and Jackie Gleason and, the old pros, was that they were always terribly well prepared. They worked very, very hard to make everything look so easy. So, I learned at an early age that it wasn’t just casual, it wasn’t just an easy job. It was a tremendously difficult job that one strove to look very easy. So, I have always tried to work hard and prepare, to do my best. You mentioned your directing. Does that aspect help or hinder the acting? It’s interesting. It’s different sides of the brain. They’re like two different kinds of things, because acting is really technical and emotional and directing is technical and intellectual and social, because you’re sort of running a group of people to try to accomplish a task. So, it’s about managing people and managing time, whereas acting is you’re really left to your own resources to channel your emotions into a character. And as a director, I’m

THINGS ARE LOOKING GRIMM NBC’s Hit Fantasy Show Co-Producers Dish on Season 2
just thrilled to be able to work with such wonderful actors, especially on Hart of Dixie. For TV viewers who haven’t caught an episode of Hart of Dixie, what are they missing? Well, Hart of Dixie is a comedy drama about two different kinds of people that are thrown together. It’s about a New Yorker doctor intellectual Yankee who is forced to go down to the Deep South, into a small town, and work for a certain period of time, but it’s this kind of magical little town where, despite all their differences, people seem to be able to get along at the end of the day. And it’s all about learning to get along. Tim, you’ve been around the business long enough to know, give me a few elements that make a hit television program. I think the key elements are a creative writing staff that can visualize what the show is and have a real solid take on it. And then having a great cast. I saw that in The West Wing. I saw that in Animal House. I saw that in so many good shows that I’ve been in that have been successful. The ones that haven’t been successful you learn just as much from, because either the cast isn’t there or the script isn’t there. And in this case, what we found was that the actors all rose to the occasion and the script inspired them and us to further define our roles and take them places where we didn’t know they were going to go. So, it’s a joy to sit down every episode and have the cast read through it at a lunch break and to hear what is coming up in the next episode, and we’re always surprised and delighted. Do the Animal House or Otter references ever get tiresome? No. I’m just fortunate enough to have been in a successful, wildly successful, comedy that maintains its connection with the younger audience because, typically, the first thing [people] do when they get to college is look at Animal House. The reason I got into Animal House was because I started doing improv and it reminds me that I had gotten frustrated as sort of a television actor, a dramatic actor, by the roles that I had been getting. They were sort of repetitive at that point in my life, so I started doing something that I was very scared to start doing, which was improv. And because I started at improv, when I got to audition for Animal House, it was a very nice fit and I got the job. It reminds me that it was all because I took a chance that I got an opportunity to turn a corner in my career. So, I just want to keep taking chances and keep looking for new opportunities and new experiences.

AST YEAR, TV TURNED THE PAGE back a few years, pulling our childhood stories (and nightmares) out of the fairy tale world and into a present-day illustration of death and destruction. Talk about an education. And where as some of these fantasy turned reality shows quickly ended their lives short of happily ever after, NBC’s GRIMM remains in the Channel Guide, with an ever-growing cult following and an unbelievable sense of suspense that attracts a larger viewership every single week. Season 2 launches after a drama-filled conclusion left viewers hungry for answers and curious for more face-morphing critters. Insite got to sit down with Co-Creators David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf (some of the brains behind similar fantasies Angel and Buffy the Vampire Slayer) to get some hints on what’s to come this season. Bottom line? You’re missing out on reliving your fairy tales all grown-up unless you’re watching. Tune in Tuesday nights at 9pm. How is this season going to be different for our hero, Nick? David Greenwalt: In the first episode Nick is going to face something unlike anything he has ever faced before. It will be bigger, and badder, and more dangerous, and more vicious. And Nick is growing into his own and part of that is learning more about his past from his mother and coming to grips with a lot of the emotional things that have happened to him. The second season, it is going to be him coming into his own, but he’s going to be challenged on so many levels. Not only with all these things he learns from his mother, but with complications from Juliet. And there’s a lot of bad critters now coming to Portland just for Nick. Because he is becoming known now. Jim Kouf: We’ll also reveal some more of the deeper history with the Grimms and tie it to some more real events in the past. How did you pick David Giuntoli to play Nick? Jim: He kind of had a powerful presence and yet a vulnerability and kind of an astonishment that he could deliver. Because this is a guy who is rediscovering what he is, you know? And facing a lot of mysteries that he never knew existed. And you know - these guys win it in the room. In front of the networks and all the people who are involved with making the decision. So you really don’t know until the last moment. David: He had this every man quality, which you can really project onto him as if it was happening to you. In a way, it’s one of the tougher parts in the show because everyone else is a little quirkier. We know it’s a show about monsters, but are we going to see any sparks fly for Monroe? Or are we at the beginning of his end? David: We certainly are. Of course there will be an attraction there with Rosalie. They each have a past and, the roads get a little rocky. Challenges will have to be faced and met. Well Monroe is going to be faced with some issues from his past that are going to come up. He’s also going to be faced with some life and death issues because of his relationship with Nick that he refuses to give up. There are
a lot of forces in our world that do not like the idea of cooperating with what we call Wesen, which are the critters. Jim: And he’s going to have another relationship with another officer… So, what’s the deal with Nick being so mad at his mother? Where’s that coming from? David: He has all kinds of feelings about the mother. He has loss and grief, and yes some anger. And a little bit of Ennui. How is Mom coming back going to affect Nick and Monroe’s relationship? Jim: Oh that’s a good question because we have to deal with that, and we do, and it’s a little ugly. David: You’ll see a clash between Monroe and the mom. And Monroe is like, “Who is this insane person?” And Nick is like, “Well it happens to be my mom.” And so you’ve got all kinds of conflict going on and the mom does not approve. Last year, Nick started bringing people in on the secret… What’s the plan for that this season? David: Jim and I really try and have the show grounded in reality. And this is what would be happening. Now what will happen with all of that remains to be seen. You know, his wife didn’t take it very well. She thought he was crazy when he was telling her. Which had been his fear all along. You know, Hank, as Nick’s partner, would be exposed to stuff that a normal person wouldn’t be exposed to. And eventually he’s going to start asking questions and thinking he’s a little crazy. And can we expect to meet any new characters this season? David: Well there’s something called a “mauvaises dents.” That means bad teeth, It’s a sabre-tooth tiger kind of creature. He’s just a killing machine and to be feared. He could take out a whole village. Animals or critters, or creatures that are extinct in our world are not necessarily extinct in the Wesen world. But this is a very rare creature that requires a lot of support and backing to get him thrust into Nick’s life and making Nick’s life a living hell. Jim: And there’s the (ceiling guterd). Like, goodnatured people. David: There’s something called the (nuclea veve) which is almost like a horse like creature except with translucent skin. Who’s definitely coming after Nick. We’ve got a sheep and wolf story. Oh and a spitting cobra. All kinds of stuff. You know, bigger and badder creatures this year. Do we get to find out about the key? The coins? Jim: Yes and no. David: Yeah, you’ll get the real explanation of what is involved and how deep this history goes. And a lot of people still want to get their hands on those coins. What about fans who (gasp) have never watched before? Too much to catch up on to join the cult now? David: The show is still designed to be a hybrid between a procedural and a genre show. You can watch the show without having all of the history of the show. But if you’re an avid fan, then you will see more things in the show.
COMEDY
WORD TO CHO MOTHER
Margaret Cho On Todd Akin, Her Emmy Nomination & Motherhood
Are you struggling with symptoms of a vaginal infection?
BY BRET LOVE
M
ARGARET CHO HAS BEEN one of our favorite comedians ever since 1999’s I’m The One That I Want established her as one of the most unique, edgy and downright funny females in the business. Cho covers controversial topics, but she also mines comedic gold from such seemingly mundane subjects as body issues, Asian-American stereotypes and her much-maligned mother. These days, the outspoken Cho has been busier than ever. In the last year alone she’s earned an Emmy nod for her guest spots on 30 Rock as Korean dictator Kim JongIl; wrapped filming on the latest season of Drop Dead Diva; and launched a new standup comedy tour, Mother. We recently caught up with the part-time Atlanta resident to talk about these and other developments. What can you tell us about your new show and about your view of Motherhood? I wanted to do a show for my fans that had all the jokes I had been putting out about my mom over the years. It’s my intention to give people who’ve been supportive of what I’ve been doing for a long time something that they’ve been asking for. I think motherhood is a really great thing. I don’t know if that is in my future, but I do think it is important to mother the world. We’re all responsible for that, so I want to make a strong statement about it. The show also goes into the question of “What is a mother of the world?” whether it’s somebody like Madonna or Angelina Jolie. I was wondering if you were going to get into Akin’s comments on rape and pregnancy, and how Conservatives are making women’s rights a focus of the election? I’m still trying to process it myself. It’s really gross the way conservatives have been so anti-gay. I guess they’re realizing that they can’t win that way, and now they’re trying to focus on being anti-woman instead, which is much more of a winner for them. I think they’re trying to do anything they can to win, which shows their desperation. You’re probably one of the most high profile, outspoken feminists in the world. Are you incredulous at some of this stuff that’s going on in America today? It’s to be expected. They’ve constantly tried to undermine women’s rights and human rights, and they do it in a way that trivializes suffering, rape, and the experience of having the choice of whether or not you have a baby or have reproductive rights. It’s something that they’ve done time and time again, so it’s not surprising. All we’re asking for is equality and sensitivity when it comes to that kind of speech. It’s a strange time, where people feel like they can be celebrate their bigotry and prejudices as part of free speech, which I guess it is. When you first started out in comedy, did you imagine yourself being celebrated for your willingness to speak up for these marginalized aspects of our culture, or did you just fall into it? I didn’t anticipate it, and I didn’t know how to prepare for it, but I was really
Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is currently the most common form of vaginal infection among women of child bearing age. BV is caused by an overgrowth of naturally occurring vaginal bacteria. The most common symptom of BV is an odor and thin discharge, which may or may not be increased in amount. The balance study is a clinical research trial evaluating the safety and efficacy of an investigational drug.
Study volunteers must: • Be female ages 18 and older • Have symptoms or diagnosis of BV • Be in good general health Study participants will receive study related exams, lab tests, and study medication at no charge. Compensation for time and travel may be provided.
grateful for it when it happened. It’s really wonderful. I started out so young, I didn’t have the adult mind to know what was going to happen. But I’m happy that it did. We had the glory days of topical comedians, with Richard Pryor, Bill Hicks and George Carlin. But then it felt like it was a vacuum for a while. Do you feel like this is a really good time to be a comedian because there’s so much topical material to work with? Yes, and it’s great because comedy has become very political now. Those with comedic minds, we’re looked to for guidance. It’s a great thing to be a political progressive in standup comedy, because you get to share great perspective up there. You often talk about the tempestuous relationship you and your mom have had. How has that relationship changed as you progressed in your career? I think we’re closer friends at this point. I’ve done my own thing, and now my parents have really come to understand what I do more than they did at the beginning. It’s really fulfilling. Does winning the Emmy nomination for your work on 30 Rock feel like some sort of validation for the work you’ve been doing all of these years? Yes, it’s a real honor and I’m grateful for that. I love doing that role, and that show. It was the perfect situation, so I’m really excited about it. Have the producers talked to you about coming back for any more stuff this season? No, but I’d love to. I think it’s a great idea. What’s going on with Drop Dead Diva? We have some big episodes leading up to the season finale. There are some big surprises and big cliffhangers, so I think people are going to be excited. I love that I get to do both TV and standup comedy, and I love that my year is split up between them. It’s a different thing for me, but it’s also something I really enjoy. I love having that balance.

TRUMP Movie Reviews CARD THE APPARITION
If you’ve ever read my reviews, you know it takes a lot for me to hate a movie. But let the pigs fly, because this one really sucked. Even with Ashley Greene and a post-Harry Potter Draco Malfoy, it just downright fails as a horror flick. It feels like a rough draft, with lots of potential that never got fleshed out. Greene’s got a great scared face, but when they throw in a shower scene just to show her in her underwear, it’s obvious they’re short on original ideas. The story aspired to be a second look at a ‘70s-era paranormal experiment gone wrong, but it By B. the Love offers blue balls equivalent of a cinematic s one AmericA’s experience: Lotsof of build-up, and most then nothing successful and high profile businessbut a letdown. men, Donald trump was –Jenni well known Williams

Instead of hitting a bad guy over the head with a fire extinguisher, this trained killer sets up a projectile gun with it à la MacGyver. In fact, for the first hour of Legacy, there’s no traditional fighting…well, not unless you’re counting Cross’ mountain run-in with a wolf. RICH EISEN
Makes the Transition From One ActionPacked Reality Show The Great Escape to another as NFL GameDay anchor. BY DEMARCO WILLIAMS
T
O KEEP LARGER-THAN-LIFE personalities like Deion Sanders, Michael Irvin and Warren Sapp in relative check on the NFL GameDay Morning set, it takes a host who’s quick, pushoverproof and armed with a wry sense of humor. Rich Eisen has all of that. And now that the former ESPN anchor’s summer job of hosting TNT’s action-packed reality show The Great Escape is over, Rich can get back to showing it all off every Sunday morning on NFL Network. The Great Escape was an awesome concept. Why hasn’t anyone thought of it before? Well, we hope that it’s something that people want to continue to see where are they putting folks each week and how in the heck are they going to get out of there. And the people [behind the scenes were great]. [The Amazing Race co-creator] Bertram [van Munster] directed the first few shoots. Just working with him and his crew, it [was] just awesome to watch them work. Rich, when you’re not helping folks get back to civilization, you’re working with the NFL Network. What is the most challenging aspect of running a smooth Sunday program like NFL GameDay Morning? The most challenging aspect is to make sure that it’s entertaining and watchable over the four hours. I want to make sure if you tune in at segment one, you’re hooked and you want to stay all the way through. Especially when, as is our show, it gets later in the morning and you have more options from which to choose. So, my job is to make something entertaining and informative and something that you want to have on your television set. And the answer to that is to make sure that every conversation is natural. Make sure that every single topic sounds like you and your friends, wherever you have your football conversations and arguments. And I’m just fortunate that the guys we have to have these conversations are either hall of famers, or future hall of famers. The challenge there is, though, that they’re all big personalities and it’s not like they don’t want to share time. We’re really a good team. I mean, we genuinely like each other, all of us. But there is only a certain amount of time in a show, and a certain amount of time within a segment. And making sure that everybody gets their point out, and does it in a conversational way isn’t easy. That is the biggest challenge but it’s something that I love to do every Sunday. What percent of what we hear is scripted? Or are you ad libbing a lot of it? Oh no. The only thing that is scripted at all is whenever I’m on camera, just me singled up, and I’m leading to introduce the game topic that we’re about to discuss, or I’m leading to a featured piece. Everything else is ad libbed. But we’re not just going out there and spitballing. There is a large amount of production that goes into a Sunday show, with a very talented group of producers and directors. For instance, we’re going to go into a meeting and our producers throughout the week have already spoken to Marshall Falk and Michael Irvin and Kurt Warner, and they’ve said to them, “Well, what do you want to talk about this week? them Mom and Dad. Timothy’s a little weird but the only sign of his – er, roots – is a pair of leafy anklets growing out of his body. They can’t be cut but they drop off one by one at significant moments. “Disney” the corporation gives it a try, injecting synthetic magic the way Walt did the real thing, and produces this dud. How, you may wonder, are they going to explain the strange goings-on? Simple: they don’t bother. Childless couples – at least the women - may cry on cue, but I was unmoved watching Garner’s expression change from pained sadness to pained happiness while Edgerton plays her supportive, emasculated puppy. The tears may be wrung out of you but they’re not earned. Georgia looks good as the recession-hit area where the local industry, a pencil factory, is in danger of closing. Despite the autumn foliage and Timothy’s ankle adornment, Odd Life... leaves me cold. –Steve Warren
PARANORMAN
I WANT TO MAKE SURE IF YOU TUNE IN AT SEGMENT ONE, YOU’RE HOOKED AND YOU WANT TO STAY ALL THE WAY THROUGH are playing Carolina. What do you think is the most important matchup?” And those producers will hear from these guys what they think, and then report up to the main producers. Then they introduce to us en mass in a meeting on Saturday and we have at it together. And I sit back and I listen to everybody talk about it, and sort of take mental notes [like] “I’ve got to bring this up on the air tomorrow.” And I won’t tell them that in Saturday’s meeting. I just bring it up to them on Sunday and spring it on them in that way, and the guys love that. And that’s how I keep it fresh, to the best of my ability. With all the reality shows and NFL football going on, how do you kick back? [Laughs] I wish I had that answer. I have two little kids at home that are three and a half and 14 months. So, when daddy sees the dawn after the [Great Escape] shoot at Alcatraz on the way back home with no sleep, there’s not much time for relaxing there. And certainly, with the podcast that I do on NFL Network, which is sort of my third baby, it’s hard to find the time to kick back. Booking celebrity guests for a sports show on NFL Network is not an easy task and it’s one that I take on mostly myself. But I’m not… I don’t want it to come across like I’m complaining. Rich, you gotta give me a food or a drink secret. What’s keeping you going? I don’t know. I don’t really have a food or a drink. I do enjoy my red wine at night. I have to have a glass of some Cabernet. But other than that, I’m trying to, on the road, not eat like shit. Try to maintain my offseason workout program, so I can get ready for the season and run my combine 40-yard dash in my suit. You did a great job with that this year, by the way. Thank you. You know, I only know one speed. It’s slow, unfortunately.
It must have seemed like a good idea in Hollywood: Combine The Walking Dead with The Sixth Sense, dumb it down for kids, animate it and get it out there before Frankenweenie captures the animated kiddie horror audience. Young Norman (voiced by Kodi SmitMcPhee) sees dead people. He talks to them too and helps them take care of their unfinished business. You’re gonna call Ghostbusters but the ghosts are gonna call Norman. So yeah, he’s a weird kid. Accustomed to being bullied at school, Norman can relate to the witches who were persecuted 300 years ago in Blithe Hollow. He’d better, because he’s about to inherit his uncle’s (John Goodman) job of keeping a witch’s curse at bay on the night when the Blithe spirits rise and the old witchhunters menace the town in the form of zombies. So ParaNorman is another animated film with a non-conforming hero and a timely anti-bullying message. The stop-motion animation, from the company that made Coraline, is well done; the non-gimmicky 3D not worth the surcharge. There’s been some debate about the right age group for this PG movie – too scary for the very young, too juvenile for adults; but most kids today can handle more than we give them credit for. –Steve Warren
PREMIUM RUSH
That’s “Rush” as in adrenaline, not Limbaugh, but actually refers to the top-drawer courier service offered by the company at the center of the story. They employ those urban daredevils known as bike messengers, and their top gun is Wilee (Joseph Gordon-Levitt). While facing competition at work and for the affection of Vanessa (Dania Ramirez) from Manny (Wolé Parks), Wilee has to deliver an envelope from the upper Manhattan law school he dropped out of to an address in Chinatown. He’s soon chased by a “douchebag” (Michael Shannon) who’s desperate to get the envelope away from him and later by a bike cop he wipes out on the way. The story doesn’t always add up (why doesn’t Wilee report his pursuer to the cop while he’s there instead of going to the precinct to file a complaint?) but the action is fast-paced and the stunts amazing. It’s the best directorial effort from David Koepp, best known for writing films like Jurassic Park. The staging and photographing of the stunts all over Manhattan deserve an Oscar for logistics. Anyone who rides to the theatre on a bicycle is likely to be seriously injured on the way home emulating the movie’s action, but they’ll have had great fun watching it. –Steve Warren
SPARKLE
Sparkle doesn’t. A few good musical numbers can’t compensate for the melodramatic clichés
of the plot that fills time between songs. Jordin Sparks acquits herself well enough in the title role of the youngest (19) of three talented sisters pursuing a singing career in Detroit in 1968 (too late for them to be confused with the Supremes). Sparkle and Dolores (Tika Sumpter) still live with their mother (Whitney Houston), and older sister Sister (Carmen Ejogo) – their group is called Sister and Her Sisters – has moved back in “temporarily” after a failed marriage. Sparkle, who writes the songs, gets romantically involved with Stix (Derek Luke), who can help her career. Sister makes another bad choice in abusive comedian Satin (Mike Epps). Their mother keeps them on a tight leash, yet they manage to sneak out every night to perform or whatever. The original (1976) film was eclipsed by Dreamgirls on stage and screen and this inferior remake is last and least. As for Houston, in hindsight you might see signs that she had good days and bad days during filming. I’m sure someone will start a Facebook campaign to get her a supporting actress Oscar nomination, and just as sure it won’t be successful. –Steve Warren
THUNDERSTRUCK
NBA superstar Kevin Durant will win a championship one day. Kevin Durant will make the all-decade team. Kevin Durant will be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. Kevin Durant will not ever take home an Academy Award—at least he won’t with flicks like this. A Like Mike-like premise of a clumsy boy (Taylor Gray) who swaps skill sets with KD from a simple wish at an Oklahoma City Thunder game? Really?! And it’s directed by John Whitesell, the same savant who did Malibu’s Most Wanted and Big Momma’s House 2? Maaan, the NBA scoring champ was put into the acting game already down 30 points. Brandon T. Jackson (Lottery Ticket), who plays Kevin’s agent, and James and Robert Belushi, as the newly gifted kid’s high school coaches, try to keep this made-for-DVDfeeling brick going, but it simply commits way too many violations. Gray is too corny in the face. The musical score feels too ’98. The script has too many stiff “Hey, kid, where are you going?!” lines. Seeing Durant miss open jumpers and trip over his own feet is pretty damn funny though. So is watching KD’s real mom, Wanda Pratt, in full wardrobe for her cameo. But if her gold medal-winning son has any serious aspirations of starring in Space Jam 2 or anything else, he better hope Whitesell isn’t called off the bench to direct. –DeMarco Williams
THE WORDS
This film received a lot of enthusiasm at Sundance, and rightfully so. As an artist, I found myself thinking about how many times my peers and I have been in the same predicament as Rory Janson (Bradley Cooper), a starving artist whose drive to succeed makes him choose to pass of another writer’s words as his own. Years later, at the height of his fame, an old man (Jeremy Irons) finds him and reveals himself as the original writer of the work that he plagiarized. Now, Jansen is faced with another choice, as the realization of his actions all but destroys his marriage to Dora (Zoe Saldana). The story is narrated beautifully by another author, Clay Hammond (Dennis Quaid). Audiences will be drawn into the film because it flows well and has some beautiful, intimate shots. I want to give special recognition to Ben Barnes (Dorian Gray) who plays the younger version of The Old Man. If you’re able to look away from his enchanting eyes and chiseled features, you’ll notice that he’s captivating and engaging. The Words is a great breakout film for writers/directors Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal. I expect to see many more thrilling and suspenseful titles to their names in the future. –Kalena Boller

REMOTE CONTROL The Stars! The Shill! The Skinny! INsite’s Annual Preview of the New Fall Network TV Shows
S THERE ANYTHING GOOD ON TV? WELL, believe it or not, yes! Here are Insite’s picks for the best of the new batch of the much-touted Fall Season from the major broadcast networks. From cute monkeys to green slime to sassy redheads to d-list celebrities to the prerequisite police dramas and postapocalyptic survival, the new season series offer something for almost everyone. For your convenience, we’ve renewed our own popular The Stars, The Shill and The Skinny features for an easy, at-a-glance way to surf the premise of each show, without having to watch an entire episode. We saw clips or entire episodes of every show mentioned here -- and yes, it’s a dirty job but someone had to do it. Find a comfy chair, grab a beverage and snacks and flip through our high(and low)lights, then find your own faves. Where’s that remote when you need it?!
SUNDAYS 666 PARK AVENUE ABC (Sun.10 pm)
The Stars: Rachel Taylor, Dave Annable, Terry O’Quinn, Vanessa Williams. The Shill: Gabrielle Pierce’s book series gets the TV treatment with this take on the ol’ deal-with-the-Devil device. Here, the setting is The Drake, a NYC apartment building managed by Taylor and Annable. The owners (O’Quinn and Williams) have a higher monthly fee in mind than most of the potential dwellers realize. The Skinny: The eerie goings on vibe has been done to death, but with Lost’s popular O’Quinn in residence, the creep-factor could be devilishly delectable.
666 PARK AVENUE
The Shill: Light-years away from the quality of Major Crimes comes yet another reality series from the calculated union of drama mogul Dick Wolf and reality TV kingpin Mark Burnett. This time, it’s a military survival contest with a bevy of Z-List pop-culture figures that could make Aaron Spelling’s Love Boat and Fantasy Island “star“-orgies seem like major blockbuster events. The high concept is, take the participants and send them through various challenges based on actual military exercises. Armed forces charities are the beneficiaries but the real winner is the audience. Unexpected humor ensures when Todd Palinlevel celebrities soldier-on for the prizes. So bad it’s almost good but definitely not recommended for long-term exposure. The Skinny: These “stars” are the real expendables.
THE MOB DOCTOR
FOX (MON. 9:00 PM)
The Stars: Jordana Spiro, William Forsythe. The Shill: Take a doctor, not just any doctor, an attractive female doctor -- add elements of organized crime, and the prognosis is good, if not a bit far-fetched. Is an episodic drama THE MOB DOCTOR about a thoracic surgeon (Spiro) with deep connections to the Chicago mob just what America needs to forget its collective troubles? No, but it’s strangely riveting entertainment from FOX. The Skinny: Drop Dead Diva’s Josh Berman presents this unholy mash-up of medicine, morals and mobsters, and co-star William Forsythe is always enjoyable as a tough guy. He’s got the chops: he played Al Capone on the Untouchables. As Dr. Grace Devlin, the beautiful Spiro is properly intense; dramatically torn between her commitments. In this case, “Doctor’s orders” can take on a whole new meaning.
PARTNERS
CBS (MON. 8:30 PM)
MONDAYS MAJOR CRIMES
TNT (MON. 10 PM)
The Stars: Mary McDonnell, G.W. Bailey, Tony Denison, Phillip P. Keene. The Shill: Fans of The Closer are a dedicated bunch. TNT knows this and thus, from the ashes of the wildly popular, madein-Atlanta show, comes the very satisfying Major Crimes. It’s not drastically different from its predecessor, and features many of the same actors. In the starring slot this time is Mary McDonnell in her familiar Captain Sharon Raydor role. The die-hards should welcome it and newcomers won’t be lost in transition. The Skinny: The Closer without Kyra Sedgwick remains one of the best shows on network TV. Well-written with fully-realized characters and plenty of unpredictable turns and off-kilter humor.
STARS EARN STRIPES NBC (MON. 8 PM)
The Stars: Nick Lachey, Laila Ali, Todd Palin, Terry Crews and Dean Cain.
The Stars: Michael Urie, David Krumholtz, Sophia Bush, Brandon Routh. The Shill: It’s an odd-couple bromance between opposite but attractive straight (Krumholtz) and gay (Urie) pals, with easyon-the eye stars in the same sort of Will & Grace-lite situations you’d expect. Mildly amusing and inoffensive buddy-humor with the usual friendship jealousies and competitions of yore. The Skinny: Will & Grace’s David Kohan and Max Mutchnick are behind this one, as you might have suspected. Strong support from Sophia Bush and Brandon Routh give the show some much-needed muscle and context.
REVOLUTION
NBC (MON.10 PM)
The Stars: Billy Burke, Elizabeth Mitchell, Tracy Spiridakos, Giancarlo Esposito. The Shill: A survival drama set in the not-too-distant, yet post-apocalyptic (where would Sci-Fi be without the threat of apocalypse?) future. Burke and company, featuring Elizabeth Mitchell (a vet of V and Lost) try to sort out what happened to the world’s technology while struggling to create some semblance of order -- without electricity. The Skinny: Sci-fi dramas are often easy contenders for cult success and with J.J. Abrams (Lost) and Eric Kripke (Supernatural) at the helm, this powerfully presented
cautionary tale will certainly make one think twice about the convenience of bundling.
TUESDAYS BEN AND KATE
FOX (TUES. 8:30 PM)
The Stars: Nate Faxon, Dakota Johnson. The Shill: A brother (Faxon) and sister (Johnson) who are polar opposites, team up to balance each other’s life. Ben is a larger-than-life goofball and his sibling Kate is an earnest, hardworking single mother. Ben moves in to help and the odd couple try to iron out their differences, and learn something about each other in the process. Heartwarming, ain’t it? The Skinny: Actually, it could work. As Ben, Faxon’s brash bravado is a solid bookend to the stoic wood-grain of Johnson’s Kate. It’s been done, but this Odd Couple does it with palpable panache.
EMILY OWENS, M.D. CW (TUES. 9 PM)
The Stars: Mamie Gummer, Justin Hartley, Michael Rady, Aja Naomi King. The Shill: Owens (Gummer), is a charming but slightly clumsy first-year intern at a hospital that mirrors her equally-awkward educational past due to the presence of her brash med-school infatuation (Hartley) and her bossy highschool adversary (King). The Skinny: Gummer, the delightful daughter of actress Meryl Streep, makes this show a cut above the usual CW drama with her engaging take on the novice physician, a sort of anti-Hart Of Dixie. Even though she starred in last season’s Off The Map for ABC, she manages to neatly side-step type as she stars in yet another medical role.
GO ON
NBC (TUES. 9 PM)
The Stars: Matthew Perry, Laura Benanti. The Shill: A comedy about grief counseling and getting on with life shouldn’t be funny. This one isn’t particularly hilarious, but it’s a well-acted ensemble piece. It revolves around the improbable plotline of the healing process of an acerbic sportscaster (Perry). No, there’s GO ON nothing funny about that but his grief relief comes in the form of his counselor (Benanti) and the assorted characters who populate his studio and her practice. The Skinny: Perry, of course, is pretty much the same in everything, so his flat character is no surprise. The whole thing is reminiscent of a modern, albeit greatly diluted, take on The Bob Newhart Show, mixed with the more modern character-driven support of The Office and Frazier -- but with far less laughs.
THE MINDY PROJECT FOX (TUES. 9:30 PM)
The Stars: Mindy Kaling, Chris Messina, Bill Hader. The Shill: A comedy about an OBGYN may sound like the continued on page 18

continued from page 15 absolute bottom of the barrel of ideas, but this fine-tuned character study actually delivers a few healthy laughs. The likeable Kaling stars and is surrounded by a staff of intuitive comedic actors, including SNL alum Bill Hader in a recurring role as “Tom.” Mindy’s romantic travails and career goals give the show a humane and very realistic edge. The Skinny: Kaling also created the show, basing it loosely on her mom’s experience as a physician. In the tradition of Bridget Jones Diary, this quirky little show could easily grow into a bouncing baby hit!
The Stars: Jesse Spencer, Taylor Kinney, David Eisenberg. The Shill: The hunky firefighters of Chicago’s Firehouse 51 put out fires on and off the job -- with the expected slick, procedural results. Gritty but stylized NBC-realism rules the look of the series, punctuated by the predictable dramatic tumult, and salvaged by the crackling performances of the typically beefy crew. THE NEW NORMAL The Skinny: Dick Wolf churns ’em out, doesn’t he? The Law and Order (ok, we’ll wait while you make that sound) maestro stokes the embers of the hook, hose and ladder brotherhood with his usual slick aplomb. But don’t laugh, this formula could be around for years, and spawn Miami Fire, L.A Fire, and hell, who knows, even Scranton Fire.
GUYS WITH KIDS
THE NEW NORMAL
NBC (TUES. 9:30 PM)
The Stars: Andrew Rannells, Justin Bartha, Georgia King, Ellen Barkin. The Shill: A gay couple, (Rannells and Bartha) enlist singlemother Goldie (King) as their surrogate. Little do they know that along with King’s character, comes her precious daughter and her opinionated mom (Barkin). The razor-sharp wit and wisdom of popular co-creator Ryan Murphy (Glee) keeps things floating along far above the standard sit-come level and displays a genuine respect for all of the characters, no matter their orientation. The Skinny: Carefully poised for maximum viewers after Go On, the sweet comedy could very well enjoy a dedicated following. Misguided protests from “concerned” viewers will only bring more attention and popularity.
VEGAS
CBS (TUES. 10 PM)
The Stars: Dennis Quaid, Michael Chiklis, Jason O’Mara, Carrie-Anne Moss, Sarah Jones. The Shill: Dennis Quaid comes to TV in the true story of Las Vegas Sheriff Ralph Lamb, a hardworking rancher who battles a shifty mob boss (Chiklis) as he tries to save Sin City from corruption and greed. Good luck! The Skinny: People love the ‘60s, but this isn’t Mad Men; this gritty period piece is more like Billy Jack Plays The Sands, but with much better production values.
WEDNESDAYS ANIMAL PRACTICE ABC (WED. 8 PM)
The Stars: Justin Kirk, Crystal The Monkey. The Shill: A wisecracking veterinarian (Kirk) who’d rather be with his four-legged pals than his annoying co-workers shares the spotlight in this grating, family-friendly comedy with a hyperactive monkey as his foil and fawn. Crystal the superstar simian from Community plays Dr. Rizzo. The Skinny: The show has already ruffled the feathers of a segment of the market when NBC delayed The Who’s much anticipated and hyped Olympics-closing performance for a teaser episode. Can this be the My Mother The Car of this generation -- or simply a misguided, best-forgotten BEAUTY AND attempt at animal humor? Hey, THE BEAST people love those pet-centric You Tubes, so there could be a market for this sort of thing.
ARROW
CW (WED. 8 PM)
The Stars: Stephen Amell, Katie Cassidy. The Shill: Comic fans know that Oliver Queen (Amell) is the Green Arrow, a suave socialite by day and a scrappy, but still suave, crime-fighting machine at night, or whenever necessary. Archery pierces through this stark version of the superhero fantasy sure to please the diehard Smallville crowd. The Skinny: Superheroes and revenge are all the rage in this presidential year. The show could very well be right on target, especially aided by the presence of attractive Katie Cassidy in the role of Queen’s siggy other, Dinah “Laurel” Lance, the DC/ Flash heroine known as the Black Canary.
CHICAGO FIRE
NBC (WED. 10:00 PM)
PG 18 • September 2012 • insiteatlanta.com
NBC (WED. 8:30 PM)
The Stars: Jesse Bradford, Anthony Anderson, Zach Cregger. The Shill: Jimmy Fallon presents a comedy about guys with kids. Sounds horrible? Wait, come back, it gets better. See, the dudes live in the same apartment building and juggle parenting, seven children, and wives and exes. Well, ok, it doesn’t sound that funny after all, but the saving grace are the three female co-stars, Erin Hayes, Jamie-Lynn Sigler and Cosby Show favorite Tempestt Bledsoe. The Skinny: No, it’s nothing at all like Three Men And A Baby, but the humor does hover in the soiled “lets learn to be parents and pals” hamper. Fallon‘s considerable pull CHICAGO at NBC and a big promo FIRE push should ensure at least a temporary success.
NASHVILLE
ABC (WED. 10 PM)
The Stars: Connie Britton, Hayden Panettiere, Powers Boothe. The Shill: An aging country singer (Britton) is persuaded to work with a young and focused, Taylor Swift-like superstar (Panettiere) and the claws are bared. Add soapy goings-on behind the scenes, corrupt politics, sneaky relationships and a few country-tinged songs thrown in as background noise and the results are an enjoyable trashwallow for fans of the music biz or Dallas-like power-plays. The Skinny: Behind the bright lights of Nashville burn the fires of Dallas. Hey, that sounds like one of the songs on the soundtrack. Nashville-based Gaylord Entertainment (HeeHaw, Grand Ole Opry) is one of the production companies behind this burgeoning rhinestone sparkler.
THE NEIGHBORS
ABC (WED. 8:30 PM)
The Stars: Lenny Venito, Jami Gertz, Isabella Cramp, Clara Mamet. The Shill: More Jersey antics are on the slate here. This time, a wacky and coarse family from New Jersey moves to an exclusive new neighborhood, exclusively populated by aliens! Sing Addams Family in reverse. More fish out of water humor as you’d expect, with the broadest stokes of the sci-fi Sharpie. The biggest shock is that as bad as it seems, it’s actually pretty good, in a clever 3rd Rock From the Sun way. The fact that the aliens have tried to adapt to the earthly standards is the humor pivot and the laughs are plentiful. The Skinny: The amusing Jami Gertz is the real star here. Her often-underrated comedic timing has never been as prominent and the show could stick -- just like the gloppy green goo the aliens cry instead of tears.
THURSDAYS BEAUTY AND THE BEAST CW (THURS. 9PM)
The Stars: Kristin Kreuk, Kiwi Jay Ryan, Max Brown. The Shill: A different take on the oft-told tale, with Ryan as
the less-hirsute but more-handsome Beast known as Vincent Keller with Smallville’s Kristin Kreuk as the Beauty. Said to be a “a modern-day romantic love story with a procedural twist,” the show should draw in the dewy-eyed romantics and play to the Goth-lite Hot Topic crowd. The Skinny: Following The Vampire Diaries could definitely add a number of dedicated viewers attracted by the familiar tinges of Twilight in the general look and feel of the production.
ELEMENTARY
CBS (THURS. 10 PM)
The Stars: Jonny Lee Miller, Lucy Liu. The Shill: Sherlock Holmes rides again and again. This time, Jonny Lee Miller assumes the position, so to speak, with the setting of modern New York as fodder and filler. How many times will Conan Doyle’s classic story be retold and twisted to suit the suits? This surely isn’t the last, and despite the nagging stigma of familiarity, Miller actually turns in an engaging portrayal of the iconic sleuth in the guise of a recovering addict and police consultant. The Skinny: The modern setting and our hero’s checkered past (a la House) provides a wealth of story possibilities. The welcome presence of Lucy Liu as this version’s smart and subtly sexy Watson is a definite plus to the storyline and the main reason to watch this droll drama.
LAST RESORT
ABC (THURS. 8 PM)
The Stars: Andre Braugher, Autumn Reeser, Daisy Betts, Robert Patrick. The Shill: A Shawn Ryan pressure-cooker with the always-credible Braugher in an improbably role as the idealistic cap’n of a wayward submarine crew. The subterranean gang, featuring a solid cast of dependable players, is on the run after defying orders. They find shelter on an island and declare themselves a (very small) sovereign nation -- with nuclear capability. The Skinny: Far-fetched, yes, but this isn’t your standard Castaways on a three-hour tour nonsense. An extremely skilled cast, complimented by dependable Robert Patrick, takes this from sea-foam froth to great depths of emotive drama.
FRIDAYS MADE IN JERSEY
CBS (FRIDAY, 9 PM)
The Stars: Janet Montgomery, Kyle MacLachlan. The Shill: A savvy Jersey-bred attorney (Montgomery) crosses the bridge over into New York City to join a genteel Manhattan firm, with occasional embarrassments and embellishments from her earthy but well-meaning Italian family. The Skinny: Jersey Shore was a hit, so why not mine the state for a colorful legal-drama, populated with a few offbeat ethnic characters? Well why not, indeed! British-born Janet Montgomery nails the accent and attitude while Kyle MacLachlan (Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet) is always reliable and seems to relish his button-down repression.
MALIBU COUNTRY
ABC (FRIDAY, 8:30 PM)
The Stars: Reba McEntire, Lily Tomlin, Sara Rue. The Shill: Spunky redhead singer/actress Reba McEntire plays Reba Gallagher, a spunky redhead singer. Hilarity and fishout-of-water hi-jinks ensure when she moves (with her kids in tow) from her country-fied Nashville home to posh Malibu to start over, in the aftermath of a nasty divorce. Oh, and Reba’s kids are named “Cash” and “June.” To spice it up, comic actress Lily Tomlin (Laugh-In) plays the kids’ medicinal-weed-smokin’ grandma Lillie Mae. It’s another one of those darn culture shock comedies in the tradition of The Beverly Hillbillies. The Skinny: Colorfully offbeat and otherwise creative singer-songwriter Dave Stewart formerly of the Eurythmics created this weird mash-up of his love of Nashville lore and his current residence in Southern California. A grating curiosity, Malibu Country could end up as one of the first casualties of the schedule by November. But for Lily Tomlin’s weird role and strictly as an odd artifact of kitsch, it’s worth seeing at least once.

OF MONSTERS & MEN
Breaking Bad’s Stellar Supporting Players On Manipulation, Morality & Mid-Life Crises BY ALEX S. MORRISON
W
ITH 13 EMMY NODS, there’s no arguing with the fact that Breaking Bad ranks among the finest shows on television. Created by Vince Gilligan (The X-Files), the show– centered on a mild-mannered high school chemistry teacher who starts making crystal meth as a means of supporting his family after he’s diagnosed with terminal cancer– has become increasingly dark and dynamic, as Walter White (the remarkable Bryan Cranston, who was previously best known as the bumbling dad on Malcolm In The Middle) increasingly spirals out of control. What at first seemed like a desperate reaction to tragedy now seems like a full-fledged midlife crisis driven by ego, greed and a mad quest for ultimate power. But Cranston is just one element of the show’s exceptional cast. Aaron Paul’s Jesse Pinkman, White’s partner in crime, has gradually evolved from a drug-abusing acolyte into the show’s thoughtful moral conscience; Bob Odenkirk’s Saul Goodman, the slick-shit lawyer who helps the duo cover their ass and launder their cash, has turned the ambulance chaser stereotype into high comedic art; and Jonathan Banks’ portrayal of aging security enforcer Mike Ehrmantraut’s world-weary decline has provided a tragic sense of pathos to season five’s rollercoaster ride following Walt’s post-Gun Fring ascension. At the beginning of the season, Paul, Odenkirk and Banks sat down with a room full of reporters at the San Diego ComicCon to discuss the past, present and future of Walter White’s descent into hell. As season five comes to a close, we thought it would be intriguing to get their take on how things will build to the show’s sixth and final season. Season Five really seems to expand the threat… BOB ODENKIRK: Yeah, the stakes escalate. Somebody asked me what happens this year and I [joked], “Walt quits and goes back to teaching high school.” The stakes have to go up and they do, by bringing in an international market. There have been moments in the show where you think Walt could quit and go back and do whatever, but he doesn’t. So it’s all a question of who Walt is inside and what choices he’s going to make. AARON PAUL: And then you realize there’s something else that’s driving him on this dark path. It’s not just money. It started out him just trying to provide for his family, but… ODENKIRK: My friend Jeff Garlin just watched all the episodes in the last two months and he, like anybody after they finally see the show, [said], ‘It’s so fucking great. People said it was good, but I had no idea.’ And then he goes, “No one says it, but it’s about middle age.” So what drives Walter White when he could get out? I think about the car– when he’s supposed to return the car and he just goes fucking crazy for no reason. I mean, there is a reason: He’s angry. He’s got this rage inside of him. JONATHAN BANKS: And why do you think he has that rage inside of him? ODENKIRK: Because he’s a normal guy. BANKS: He’s a normal guy who just happens to deal in crystal meth and kill people. But he’s a normal guy.
ODENKIRK: He’s got a little more rage than a “normal person.”
It feels like there’s this quicksand and Walter’s in the middle, and he’s pulling everyone with him. It seems like your characters could’ve left, but this season we find out that there’s no getting out of that sand. BANKS: I can’t jump ahead too much. But it’s really important for Mike, going back to the third season where Mike said, “No more half measures.” If you’re going to kill somebody, you kill them dead. I think Mike makes a real mistake if he doesn’t follow his own rules. So we’ll see if he makes a mistake. PAUL: I think he’s definitely taking us down. ODENKIRK: [Saul’s] got enough distance from all this crime. I mean, obviously he’s really afraid of Gus, but then that gets cleared up. But Walter is changing, and that’s at the core of this whole series. He’s a guy whose conscience and ability to give a shit about anyone has just disintegrated. It’s almost gone now, which is why Vince can’t do the show for more than 16 episodes. This guy is losing his humanity! But so far as taking people down, Walter White is becoming a guy totally willing to do that, whereas I think before he would hesitate. He really loves Jesse on some level, but even that has been brutalized. PAUL: And he just knows how to manipulate everybody. He has everybody on his little strings. BANKS: I don’t think he loves Jesse at all. You’re talking about Walt? PAUL: You don’t think Walt cares for Jesse? BANKS: I don’t think Walt cares for anybody. ODENKIRK: I think he looks to Jesse as a son. PAUL: He has Jesse in the palm of his hand and he knows how to control him. BANKS: To control him. That’s hardly love. ODENKIRK: There are scenes that are like a father-son thing. PAUL: Yeah. Jesse is striving for someone to guide him in a direction. He’s looking for a fatherly figure in some way. He just wants to be told what to do. He might not accept that but it’s true… Do you think Walt’s manipulation of people is the way he shows his love? BANKS: I love the way you’ve phrased that question. Is manipulation his way of showing love? Did I misquote you? His manipulation shows his love? What kind of broken-ass home did you come from? ODENKIRK: Look… There’s a lot of families like that, with parents who do that to everyone around them. I just saw a great play Off-Broadway called Tribes. The dad in that, you first meet him and you like him because he’s funny, he’s got a lot of opinions and he’s argumentative. But then you realize he’s just a shitty guy torturing his kids, his wife and everyone around him with his loud opinions and his neediness. BANKS: I will tell you this, because I’m old enough to be everybody’s father here. And I know specifically of parents who would go… You would be hit by a car, lying on the side of the road and they would come over and go, “Oh my god. Son, are you okay?!” And in the

JONATHAN BANKS
same breath, “Could somebody take care of this? I gotta go!” It ain’t love. They may tell themselves that it’s love. But it ain’t love. So does Walt love anybody then? PAUL: He definitely loves himself. BANKS: A sociopath feels no guilt in their actions and what they do. ODENKIRK: But do you think he’s becoming a sociopath? BANKS: No, I think he’s been a sociopath since the time in the gym when he justifies the airplane crash with, “Well, there have been worse crashes. More people have died.” That is the classic sociopath. PAUL: And this season he goes to such a different place. The entire tone of this season is just so unsettling and creepy and eerie. Well, he’s gotten everything he wants now. PAUL: Exactly. He just wants to be the king. That’s it. It’s just a power trip. How do you view your characters, morally speaking? Do you view yourselves as the
heroes or villains, or does that even enter into the equation? ODENKIRK: That’s part of the show. Nobody’s a hero and nobody’s a pure villain. BANKS: I disagree. I think Mike, and I can only speak for Mike lost his soul a long, long time ago and Mike is wildly aware that there are places in this country where sixty percent of the emergency room admissions are methamphetamine related. What he sees in Jesse: he may not be able to save Jesse but he’d like to protect him. I still think Mike sees that there is hope somewhere for this kid. So would you define Jesse as the moral center of the show? BANKS: I can only talk about what he is for my character, and I think Mike wants something good for Jesse. PAUL: I want something good for Jesse as well… Especially in this season, where it feels like Jesse’s always walking on eggshells. All of our characters are really. I’m a little worried about this guy. Shit is going to get crazy!

The Dean’s List SLEEPY TURTLES – Summer, Hither EP (Autumn+Colour) The beauty of simplicity
BL: As popular music has b e c o m e increasingly plagued by soulless, Autotuned studio trickery and style-oversubstance composition, more and more people are turning to rootsy, traditional songwriting styles of folk, bluegrass and Americana in search of music with deeper meaning. In recent years it’s become a full-fledged phenomenon, with bands like Avett Brothers, Mumford & Sons and Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros breaking out into the mainstream. It’s difficult to predict anything in today’s turbulent music industry, but don’t be surprised if Atlanta’s Sleepy Turtles soon find themselves mentioned in the same breath. On their second EP, the quintet– led by Dylan Higgins– trods similar sonic pathways, incorporating influences ranging from Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young to The Shins and Fleet Foxes, with lushly layered vocal harmonies over dynamic compositions that seem to come from a much more experienced band. The title track is the EP’s most straightforward rocker, with jangly, Byrds-ian guitars offset by spacious a capella sections that highlight their expertly arranged 4-part harmonies. But frequent shifts in groove reveal an almost Brian Wilson-like sense of restless creativity, and the arrival of a banjo around the 2-minute mark clues you into where things are heading. “Morning Song” knocks my socks off, with a sweet banjo riff, lovely lyrics, and achingly beautiful gospel harmonies that remind me of growing up in my grandma’s church. The syncopated “Nature’s Hymn” is your first clue that Sleepy Turtles is a Christian band, but Higgins’ lyrics never bludgeon you with his beliefs, instead simply celebrating the joy his faith brings him. Closing track “Being Small” is arguably the EP’s best: A straightforward folk song that focuses on emotion-rich storytelling, it gives you a hint of the impact this band could have. Mark my words: The only thing separating these guys from stardom is time.
SMASHING PUMPKINS – Pisces Iscariot: Deluxe Edition (Virgin/EMI) Rarities Re-releases from Chicago Alt Rock kings
JM: Pisces Iscariot, a collection of b-sides and rarities from the Smashing Pumpkins, initially came out at a pivotal time for the band, sandwiched between Gish and the wildlysuccessful Mellon Collie and the Infinite PG 20 • September 2012 • insiteatlanta.com
EVERCLEAR – Invisible Stars (eOne) ‘90s Nostalgia Act Back for an Encore
JM: You know you’re getting old when those bands that first surfaced in your college years are now touring as a packaged nostalgia act alongside fellow graying rock bands. In the case of Everclear, which is now celebrating 20 years together as a band, that means hitting the road with the Gin Blossoms, Lit, Marcy Playground and Sugar Ray. If audiences are permitting, Everclear can even sneak in some songs from their new record, Invisible Stars, between well-known hits like “Santa Monica” and “Father of Mine.” Their first new material in six years is pretty much what you’ve come to expect from the band, with intensely personal lyrics put to catchy music. If you were never a fan of the band, this album isn’t going to change your opinion of them. But if you were, there is something refreshing about a group not trying to be something they aren’t. They have a formula that works for them, so they keep repeating it. Let’s just hope they’re considerate enough to start the shows on time so the audience can get home in time to relieve the babysitter. GRADE: B-
Sadness, the band was about to become among the biggest rock starts of the ‘90s. I’m not exactly spilling any industry secrets when I say rarities collections are seen as little more than placeholders for record companies looking to keep the momentum going between proper albums. But Pisces Iscariot is actually so much more. It went platinum when it was initially released in 1994, in part because music fans could not get enough from this band, but more surprisingly it contains some of the bands best songs. While the double album Mellon Collie was a bit bloated, the songs off of this outtakes collection – recently re-released and given the deluxe treatment from Virgin and EMIcome across with more purpose. Tacking on the second disc on this deluxe version, the album is among the band’s best. Speaking of that second disc, there are some great covers, like “Cinnamon Girl” and “Jackie Blue.” The DVD is mainly footage taken from a 1988 cable access program and shows a band that hasn’t yet started to cop the life-is-sohard attitude that would come to define the petulant Billy Corgan and band mates in the GIRLYMAN – Supernova years that followed. The deluxe set also comes A new generation of Atlanta folk with a cassette of their demos. Do yourself a favor and go back and re-discover the group through these songs, before Corgan drew a target on the band and practically begged us to hate them.
AMY COOK – Summer Skin (Roothouse /Thirty Tigers)
A flashback to the ‘70s singer-songwriter LVS: In the ‘70s, the “Female Vocals” bin in your average record store could contain anything from Carole King’s Tapestry to Carly Simon’s No Secrets to Linda Ronstadt’s Hasten Down The Wind, even Barbra Streisand’s Stoney End LP; all very different approaches to the intelligent folk-rock mindset of the era. Elements of all of those albums are constantly echoed in today’s burgeoning Americana movement. In the past few years, the perfect artist to carry on that meld of rock/folk/country has been Texas-based singer-songwriter Amy Cook. Besting her critically-lauded 2010 release, Let The Light In, her newest album not only lets the light in, but takes the whole roof off the house. Yes, the press has fixated on her guest, Robert Plant, and his instantly recognizable appearances on “It’s Gonna Rain” and the soaring “Airplane Driver.” But the other guests (including Ben Kweller and Patty Griffin) and able backing from guitarist David Garza and bassist Me’Shell N’Degeocello take Cook’s tales of relocation and regeneration to a new plateau for the indie craftsman. Finely honed highlights include “Waiting 4 the World 2 End,” the provocative title track and even the throwaway pop of “Hello, Bunny,” all of which mark Summer Skin as one of the best releases of 2012.
(Self-Released)
HH: For those unfamiliar with Atlanta quartet Girlyman’s history, it won’t come as a surprise that they’ve been championed by the Indigo Girls (their first two albums were on Amy Ray’s Daemon label) after listening to a few songs on their fifth release. The lush harmonies provided by the male/female vocalists are similar to those the Indigo Girls took to the masses more than two decades ago, and remains the bedrock of their approach. Supernova was written primarily as a chronicle of frontwoman Doris Muramatsu’s unexpected 2010 leukemia diagnosis (she’s now in remission). As such, there’s a natural melancholia threading through the group’s alternately soaring and intimate folk. Drums add a propulsive element, and multi-instrumentalist Nate Borofsky’s mandolin, organ, bass, accordion and pedal steel layer lovely textures on subtle songs that shimmer with gratitude and hope that everything will turn out fine. GRADE: B
ALANIS MORISSETTE – Havoc And Bright Lights (Collective Sounds) Back, and less bitter
LVS: It’s a bit ironic, dontcha think, that Alanis Morissette continues to jettison the ire that brought her to public acclaim nearly two decades ago with the classic Jagged Little Pill. But if the talented and mercurial performer continued to constantly bellow at some ungrateful hurt or injustice for the rest of her career, it would likely be a sad thing to see and hear. So it is with a bit of relief that her newest album, Havoc And Bright Lights, finds her in
a refreshingly good mood for the most part. Upheaval is good for creativity, and evidently her mood and muse has changed for the better. Her first studio release in over four years finds the ’90s icon in fine vocal form, with her signature yelp tempered a bit by age, personal circumstances and big fluffy choruses. The fragile ballad “til you,” offers even more diversity from the distinctively charismatic singersongwriter-turned-actress. The old fire and ire of the “famous” Alanis does make a few appearances, of course. This time out, her wrathful and literate wordplay is tightly-wrapped around the lines of “Lens,” a finely-focused shot at political and religious issues, the seductively scathing character study of “Numb,” and the fishbowl effects of “Celebrity.” GRADE: B+
THE DOC MARSHALLS – Look Out, Compadre (self-released) Country for the hipster set
JM: Though The Doc Marshalls’ latest album is certain to appeal to ironic hipsters rocking pearlbutton western shirts, the band shouldn’t be blamed for that. Despite what could have easily been seen as a contrived band (they are from Brooklyn, by the way), they play under-the-radar country with serious enough writing (think Graham Parsons, not Toby Keith) to push them into the alt country/ Americana genre. Gone are the Cajun and Honky Tonk vibes of the first two efforts, sacrificed for a more streamlined, folk country sound. That’s not to say all past influences have been excised, as they still include accordion and plenty of lap steel throughout the record. It’s been four years since their last album and, while Look Out, Compadre is not for everyone, the band is bound to keep their core fans happy with this one… and maybe even win over some new ones in the process. GRADE: B-
SHOVELS & ROPE – O’ Be Joyful (Dualtone Records) Alt-country’s new dynamic duo
LVS: Duos are all the rage these days, with the impressive rise of The Civil Wars and the lingering influence of the minimal but sonic power of Jack White’s production style. But the hot new two-some called Shovels and Rope aren’t the Black Keys or some Taylor (Swift)-made plastic doll set. They’re a raw and energetic act that often takes the Steve Earl route out to the country with stops at the liquor store and the church on the way to their own rocky copperhead road. With vibrant aural personalities and roughhewn harmonies, Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent are making a lot of noise on the current scene. The Columbia, South Carolina band employs old guitars, harmonicas and a worn-out drum set to write and perform their frayed fables in the tradition of House Of Freaks or Boo Hewerdine and Darden Smith. A great debut from two charmingly offcenter collaborators that started just a few years ago by recording Ramones covers and quirky little murder ballads. Yep, the future looks bright for this talented new band. GRADE: A

RETURN OF THE SPIRIT CEELO GREEN LAUNCHES Dead Can Dance Reunites For Their GREENHOUSE FOUNDATION First New Album In 16 Years BY BRET LOVE
T
HE LATE ‘80S– MY FORMATIVE years– were a heady time for music. Hair metal was replaced by the rise of the alternative nation, and albums such as Paul Simon’s Graceland and Peter Gabriel’s Passion: Music For The Last Temptation of Christ opened western ears to the ancient sounds of Africa and the Middle East. One of my favorite acts, Dead Can Dance, evolved from a fairly typical 4AD Records goth band into something infinitely more intriguing, combining Gaelic folk, Gregorian chant, Eastern European polyphonic singing, African syncopation and Middle Eastern mantras to create a timeless art-rock sound that seemed to emanate from everywhere at once. It was if all of the planet’s traditional music had been painstakingly researched, blended, recorded in an ancient church and unleashed to prove that music was the universal language that united us all. The band, centered around Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry, dissolved at the height of their popularity in 1998. A former couple living on separate continents (Perry in Ireland, Gerrard in Australia), the songwriting duo simply could not find their usual yin-yang balance– Perry is rooted in traditional song structures, while Gerrard is prone to more epic, cinematic soundscapes– on their follow-up to 1996’s Spiritchaser. So they went their separate ways, with Gerrard earning acclaim as a composer for soundtracks to films such as Gladiator, Whale Rider and Black Hawk Down. Now, after a 14-year hiatus, the duo has reunited for a new album, Anastasis (the Greek word for rebirth), and the biggest world tour of their careers. I was delighted to get a chance to speak with Gerrard, whose stunning contralto voice and dynamic compositions were a huge influence on my world music interests. You grew up with Irish parents in Australia. Where did your interest in the music of different cultures and periods in history originate? For me, it was definitely something that I grew up with. I came from the Irish background and there was a lot of singing and music played in the house, which obviously influences the way I think and write music. Also, I grew up in a Greek and Turkish immigrant area, which began an interest in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern music. There is very much that Mediterranean kind of color in our latest work, in the choice of instruments and rhythms. Was there ever any resistance, whether at the label or from your early fans, when Dead Can Dance started incorporating more world music influences into its sound? There is something about the arts: If it becomes contrived, you lose the purpose of
what it is that seems to be innately wanting to burst out from within you. It can be a blessing or an affliction. All of these colors you’ve grown up with, there’s an innate, abstract desire to in some way represent all of those cultures to create something that can be understood by all. I’ve never really understood how western music within pop culture stays so very singular, in denial of all of those rich tapestries. You’re still based in Australia and Brendan is in Ireland. Did those geographical difficulties influence the band’s break-up in the mid ‘90s? It’s tricky. Because of the period of time we’d spent apart, we decided after [1996 album] Spiritchaser to get back together and do another album. But we don’t just dial this stuff up: Our music comes from being in each other’s company for long periods of time, sharing books and different music. Those things start to resonate within you, and you start to create pieces based on that. But when we got back together, we realized it wasn’t going to work. The music was beautiful, but there was something missing, so we decided not to release it. We thought we’d do a tour and spend some time together, but then that tour fell to pieces and we decided to call it quits. What were the circumstances that led you and Brendan to start working together again? When the Black Saturday bush fires broke out in Australia in 2009, Brendan contacted me and we started to rekindle that interaction we had. We really missed writing music together and visiting the pieces that we’d written together. So we thought it was worth the effort to try to get together again and see what we would make, even if for nothing else than curiosity, to see if we could. How would you say your approach to songwriting differs from Brendan’s? Brendan has always had a song-centered form to his work. He works in a very similar way to [popular late ‘60s singer-songwriter] Scott Walker: He builds from the drums and bass up, and has that as an anchor in the piece. I work a lot more loosely: I can start a piece with just two notes, and grow the piece from there. We can work quite differently, but I think that’s why our work complements each other so well. What has it been like on this tour, reconnecting with your diehard fans after all this time? It’s been so overwhelmingly wonderful, I can’t tell you! It’s just extraordinary. We didn’t really know what was going to happen. We didn’t know if our fans were still out there. The people who grew up with this work, who appreciated what we do, it’s been such an emotional connection. I can’t believe how blessed we are to be part of that energy. It’s truly special…
Charity Initiative Will Teach Atlanta’s Urban Youth The Benefits of Going Green
BY BRET LOVE
G
oing green may be the latest trendy cause celebre, but it’s pretty rare that you see a major celebrity putting their money where their mouth is. So it was refreshing to attend the groundbreaking ceremony for Atlanta’s GreenHouse Foundation, a new non-profit initiative being launched by Grammy-winning performerand The Voice star CeeLo Green and his sister, Shedonna Alexander. The event was held on the grounds of Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy (where the artist born Thomas DeCarlo Callaway once attended elementary school), with Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, CeeLo’s Goodie Mob bandmates, MC Art Terrell, and various family and friends from the community in attendance. SACA was selected as the first community project by the GreenHouse Foundation, whose core mission is to make “Green education” accessible to students in under-served urban school districts, inspiring them to become more responsible stewards of the environment and their communities. The event was a groundbreaking for their first “teaching GreenHouse,” which was dedicated to CeeLo and Shedonna’s late mother, Sheila J. Callaway Tyler. They also made time to honor their grandmother, Ruby Callaway Robinson, who spearheaded a renowned non-profit organization (CASCADE) in the ’80s that focused on drug prevention and education for inner-city youth. “Miss Ruby,” who is in her early 80s and confined to a wheelchair, looked on proudly as her grandchildren were honored by Mayor Reed: “I’m glad to be here to be here with CeeLo & Shedonna,” he said. “CeeLo is my man and I adore Shedonna, but also because this is 5 minutes away from where I grew up. I wanted to be here to support The GreenHouse Foundation, a non-profit group organized to provide educational and financial resources to educate and encourage young people and their families to adopt green living practices. Through the education of our youngest generation, we can change the world for more responsible living that positively impacts the sustainability of our natural resources and our environment for generations to come.” The new program at Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy will consist of numerous elements emphasizing math and science, including an outdoor garden, an enclosed greenhouse garden and a school farmer’s market that will help feed homeless and elderly community members in need. The program will soon expand into other local schools, including West Manor Elementary, Beecher Hills Elementary and Imhotep Academy. We were delighted, at the end of the dedication ceremony, to get some face-time for an exclusive Q&A session with CeeLo and Shedonna. Can you talk about the importance of community-focused eco initiatives like this? CeeLo: I think that it’s imperative. It’s urgent that we bring attention to what strikes closest to our hearts. Green education happens to be something that we’re passionate about. We encourage people to get involved overall, because our communities are under fire. We need to be responsible for our communities,
not only communally, but in the culture at large. Through music, networking and media– all these things that are so accessible– we have to cultivate and curate programs to create a better balance. If I can use any notoriety that I have to bring attention to, not only our cause, but to show commitment, to show focus, to show discipline, to show obedience, to show sacrifice… that’s just a blessing. Out of all the causes you could have use your fame to promote, why environmental sustainability? Shedonna: It wasn’t just a play on words. That’s what a lot of people think: “CeeLo Green is going green!” It was actually about a need in our community. Our kids just don’t have the resources, and we wanted to be trailblazers in our community to introduce this initiative head-on. When our mother passed away, I was 21 yrs old and CeeLo was 19. This community raised us as a village, so we just want to give back and sow good seeds and help raise the next generation of our community. Do you feel that this type of initiative is even more important now, when we’ve got genetically modified foods and meat being pumped full of hormones? CeeLo: Definitely! A better way of living and eating is expensive, in the same way that better education is expensive. This is a more convenient and cost effective way to get involved by literally growing your food and growing your community with your own hands. It should be a labor of love, as it is for us. Eating and energy… it’s a crisis as we speak. That’s why it is urgent for us to get involved, make a statement and take a stance. I know you’re just doing a few schools now, but how would you like to see the foundation evolve over time? Shedonna: The Greenhouse Foundation to be a nationwide organization, working with schools around the world. That’s the goal. We had a conversation with a guy last week from the UK who wanted us to bring our initiatives over there. That’s an absolute goal for the future. Can you talk about the role you hope these kids will play in changing the face of the eco movement? CeeLo: The role that they will play is to carry on our initiative. It’s about them taking initiative and that responsibility, because you’re never too young to pick up a cause. It all starts with these kids. It is very important that we bring about a balance. We must educate and give children balance by our living and committing an example. We’re just making it fun and fundamental… insiteatlanta.com • September 2012 • PG 23

SPORTS
2012 NFL PREVIEW BY DEMARCO WILLIAMS
N
OT TO BRAG OR ANYTHING, BUT WE DO A pretty good job of this sports prognosticating stuff here at INsite. Doubt our prowess? Well, we correctly predicted the current kings of NCAA football, NCAA basketball and NBA. Not too shabby. But one thing those good at something know is that they can always get better. So, when it came time to forecast the new NFL season, we sought out the help of Mr. Deion Sanders, a paid professional with decent pigskin credentials. The hall of fame player and NFL Network analyst is going to help us out with a few of the team descriptions this year. But we have to apologize in advance to “Prime Time” for taking the credit of saying the Green Bay Packers will beat the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLVII. (Deion Sanders’ commentary is in bold italics)
1. GREEN BAY
in ’12. The secret will be getting vets like Steve Smith and DeAngelo Williams to pick up the statistical load.
12. SEATTLE
Marshawn Lynch, 26, waited until last season to have a breakout year. The rest of the current team (that includes you, Terrell Owens!) will need similarly big seasons to knock off the Niners in the NFC West.
Dion Sanders
2. ATLANTA
If a maturing defense is even half as scary as the Matt RyanRoddy White-Julio Jones offensive monster looked in the preseason, these Falcons should frighten the hell outta the NFC South.
3. SAN FRANCISCO
“Is Frisco for real? Will Randy Moss come back to his old form, because if he is half of what he needs to be, they’re going to do it. And they have a horrible division [in the NFC West].”
4. PHILADELPHIA
“They gotta get hungry again and [Michael] Vick has something to prove this year. It’s several of them [on Philly that] have something to prove this year and they got to do it. I mean, they got to do it this year.”
5. CHICAGO
Maybe Josh Freeman isn’t that good. Maybe LeGarrette Blount is just a big body who can locate holes. But maybe, just maybe, a new head coach (Greg Schiano) and a new offensive weapon (WR Vincent Jackson) can get the Bucs back in business.
14. WASHINGTON
NFC
The 15-1 Packers had some holes exposed in their disappointing playoff performance of year ago. The run game was one. A revived Cedric Benson looks to fill that void and get Aaron Rodgers his second title in three years.
13. TAMPA BAY
the right direction.
Warren Moon recently called Robert Griffin III a younger version of himself. If the first-year QB can ignore expectations and concentrate on getting the ball down field, that’s one small step for the Skins in
15. MINNESOTA
It’s going to take a Percy Harvin who’s 100% migraine free, an Adrian Peterson who’s 90% healthy and a Christian Ponder who’s completing 60% of his passes for the Vikings to even win 50% of their games.
16. ST. LOUIS
Steven Jackson just keeps on going and going (seven straight seasons of 1,000+ yards rushing), but unless Sam Bradford gets lots of offensive help, the Rams won’t be going anywhere near the playoffs.
NFC TITLE GAME: GREEN BAY OVER ATLANTA
1. NEW ENGLAND
AFC
“[Tom] Brady is Brady, but he needs to play with an attitude this year, because the last two times he danced [in the Super Bowl], the record turned off on him.”
2. PITTSBURGH
We think highly enough of the new additions (Brandon Marshall, Michael Bush) to know that these won’t be the same ol’ Bears.
“They ain’t the best Steelers. They’re biggest move was to re-up and to give an extension to [head coach] Mike Tomlin. He is Pittsburgh. They could move all the pieces of the puzzle they want, but don’t mess with that dude. He’s a bad boy.”
6. NEW ORLEANS
3. HOUSTON
If the Saints came come out of their chaotic offseason with a winning record, everyone in the organization needs to be commended. If contract-seeking Drew Brees can guide them to a playoff win or two, he deserves a blank check.
7. NEW YORK
Though Eli Manning, Hakeem Nicks and Ahmad Bradshaw are Pro Bowl-worthy players, we just don’t know if there’s enough magic in Victor Cruz’s palms and the defensive line’s pursuits for a Super Bowl repeat.
8. ARIZONA
“Arizona came on strong at the end. Can they hold that? I can’t wait to see what Patrick Peterson does and see if he gets a standing ovation for his encore season.”
9. DETROIT
Calvin “Megatron” Johnson is their biggest offensive weapon. But if QB Matthew Stafford can consistently find Titus Young in the flat, these Lions transform into serious postseason contenders.
10. DALLAS
Few teams are more talented than these Cowboys. Still fewer are more snake-bitten than this collection of guys who seemingly sprain an ankle or shoot themselves in the foot every game.
11. CAROLINA
Cam Newton’s freshman campaign (4,051 passing yards, 14 rushing TDs) was so good that he won’t help but fall off some
The Texans already had a star in Andre Johnson (five-time Pro Bowler). They got a new one last year in Arian Foster (1,224 rushing yards). If Matt Schaub is merely decent under center, they all may be starring in the AFC Championship.
4. DENVER
“Can Peyton [Manning] be Peyton. Peyton ain’t played in a year. You can’t discount that. And it ain’t like he looks out there and sees [ex-Indianapolis Colts teammates] Reggie Wayne or Dallas Clark. It ain’t out there. So, we are really going to get to see. People say, ‘Well, the defense…’ The defense was garbage last year!”
over, because [Mark] Sanchez is going to mess it up.” Even if that’s the case, there’s just too much dysfunction for this present group to be truly functional.
9. SAN DIEGO
If preseason incidents (Ryan Matthews’ hurt shoulder) are any indication, these Chargers are in for another up-n-down season…and head coach Norv Turner is in for a longer offseason in the unemployment line.
10. CINCINNATI
Should these talented young Bengals (Andy Dalton, A.J. Green) ever smooth out their edges (a 3-5 finish to ’11), we see them becoming a perennial playoff pursuer.
11. BUFFALO
The Bills are kinda like the Spider-Man movie that came out a few months back: Everybody was talking about them for a minute, but after realizing they were just a glossed-up version of their old selves, they became an afterthought.
12. INDIANAPOLIS
Okay, so we’ve only seen franchise QB Andrew Luck for a few preseason quarters. But oh, what a dazzling few quarters they were. We see four or five wins this year. Six or seven in ’13. Peyton Who? by ’14.
13. OAKLAND
“Oakland gotta quit playing with people’s emotions. They will play with your emotions, man. They’re like a sexy woman that really don’t want you, but she wants somebody there [near you]. That’s what Oakland is.”
14. MIAMI
Boy, that Chad Johnson experiment sure didn’t last long. New coach Joe Philbin won’t be around South Florida too long himself if he doesn’t figure out what to do with Reggie Bush and who to call his starting QB.
15. CLEVELAND
“I felt bad for the little running back from Alabama [Trent Richardson] that went to Cleveland. You got to play against three of the best defenses (Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Cincinnati) in the league. And you want success? You don’t have a quarterback. I don’t even know no receivers in Cleveland. And you trying to run?”
16. JACKSONVILLE
We don’t know Maurice Jones-Drew, but he appears to be a decent guy who’s getting a raw deal from the owner. We do know new head coach (and former Falcons coordinator) Mike Mularkey and can bet the guy’s gonna need a bottle of Rolaids every Sunday from dealing with this ratchet roster.
AFC TITLE GAME: NEW ENGLAND OVER HOUSTON SUPER BOWL XLVII: GREEN BAY OVER NEW ENGLAND, 34-28 Green Bay’s Cedric Benson
5. BALTIMORE
We know the preseason is worth as much as a Matt Leinart rookie card, but we weren’t terribly impressed with how Joe Flacco, Ray Rice and an wrinkly defense has looked early on.
6. KANSAS CITY
The Chiefs were absolutely rocked by injuries in 2011. The now-healthy group can be noisemakers in the AFC West if they can keep the sidelines relatively free of Ouch! outbursts.
7. TENNESSEE
Chris Johnson (1,047 yards) will rebound from a so-so season on the ground. We can’t say exactly how Matt Hasselbeck will do in the air because we aren’t even sure if he’ll have the starting quarterback job over Jake Locker.
8. NEW YORK
“I feel like [Tim Tebow] will be starting before the season is

TOIL & TROUBLE
Chicago’s Flatfoot 56 Thrive on the Struggle To Survive
T
BY JOHN B. MOORE
WELVE YEARS AND A COUPLE OF NEW MEMBERS after their initial bagpiped, punk-rocked introduction to the world, Chicago’s Flatfoot 56 are still around. And the years have been mighty kind to these Scully-capped punks. They’ve ridden the carousel of record labels (landing most recently on the solid indie Paper + Plastick) and turned out four records that have ranged from pretty good to “Holy shit, this is great,” all while putting in the amount of work that only a blue collar band can get used to. Their latest effort, the stellar Toil, brings out plenty of their raucous Celtic punk that fans have come to expect, but also shade in the sound with darker elements and some hints of folk. And Street Dogs bassist Johnny Rioux returned once again to the producer’s chair with this one. Singer/guitarist Tobin Bawininkel spoke recently about the new record. The first thing I noticed about this record is that the songs seem a bit different than Black Thorn and Jungle of the Midwest Sea. Was that a conscious decision? Yes! After years of always hearing the same records come out from the same bands with very little change, it was our desire to both grow and challenge ourselves to step out of our box. None of us ever like it when we buy a record and it sounds no different than that band’s previous few records. If we are not growing or pushing the envelope then we become stale. It gets boring and we don’t want to be that! Were there any specific personal events that inspired some of these songs? Many of these songs cover experiences where we watched friends of ours take total nose dives back into addictions that they had worked so hard to get out of. There is nothing more frustrating than to be wholeheartedly rooting for someone that you love and then watch as they crumble under temptation and fall. A bunch of the tunes cover what we wanted to say to them during those times.
Can you talk a little bit about the song “The Rich, The Strong and The Poor”? This song tells the story of three different characters who all find themselves chasing different things. One man lives his life searching for riches and prosperity. The second is chasing physical strength and revenge. He kind of has this idea that if he just proves to the world how tough he is then he will achieve what he is looking for. The third character is the poor man who is obviously seeking basic life needs and happiness. All of these positions serve to remind that even though we have three very different characters exemplified here; all three are very much in the same position in that happiness hasn’t been found in chasing these various desires. There is something more which is hopeful for some and frustrating for others. What made you turn to Johnny (Rioux) to produce this one? We have always loved how Johnny hears parts and challenges us to think outside of our box. He does a good job of allowing us to be ourselves while pushing us to take chances. We were also heading into the studio for the first time with Brandon (Good, Mandolin) and Eric (McMahon, Bagpiper) and we wanted to make sure we could fit things together the right way. Johnny’s experience with us was an asset to this recording experience. Was it easier to communicate this time around as you had already worked together? Oh yeah. We all got much closer and were able to work more freely than we had during Black Thorn. We trusted that the end result was going to be good. How did you connect with the folks at Paper + Plastick? A few summers ago we had played with Less Than Jake at SummerFest in Milwaukee. Vinnie (Fiorello, Less Than Jake’s drummer) saw us at the festival and was impressed. When he found out that we were looking for a label to put our next record out, he offered us a chance. I last interviewed you guys about four years ago. How has the band changed since then?
Well we have two new members who joined right before the release of Black Thorn. Since then we have been growing together and musically in huge ways. We now use two guitars in almost every song and we developed our singing to utilize the voices that we have now. We started to get creative with the newest talents we realized we had. I think it’s paid off. You guys have been at this for more than 10 years now. Do you ever have those days when you think it might be nice not to be in a band anymore? (Laughs) All the time! And then we ask ourselves what would we do if we weren’t able to play shows and see all of our friends we have made on the road? That thought has helped on those days when we are tired. What’s next for you guys? Touring and more touring. We have been really excited to see how well things have been going for us overseas and we are anxious to get back and continue growing in places like Russia and Europe where the crowds keep growing. Cool. Anything else? Make sure to keep an eye for some really awesome creative releases through Paper + Plastick! This label is amazing at getting out of the box. We are excited about what’s to come!
CURRENT AFFAIR
The Early November Reunites, 5 Years After Straying From The Path BY JOHN B. MOORE
W
HEN THE EARLY NOVEMBER (TEN) finally tacked up the noncommittal “indefinite hiatus” status on their website in 2007, many assumed the band was gone for good. The rumors of a break up had been around for months, and a black cloud seemed to hang over the band as they went about tackling the highly ambitious, threedisc The Mother, The Mechanic & The Path. The album, though it had some solid tracks, seemed to bring the band beyond the breaking point, and the so-so response it received was a sign that it might be time to pack it in. So they did. Years went by and the guys went about forming new groups, looking for new day jobs and simply living their lives in a post-TEN world.
Then last summer the band surprised many by getting together for a one-off reunion show in Philly, which turned into a few more shows… which eventually led to In Currents, the band’s latest full length and first for Rise Records. Guitarist Joseph Marro spoke with us recently about why the band went on hiatus, what brought them back and why things might be different from now on.
For clarification, did the band break up after the triple album or was it a hiatus, knowing you guys would get back together? It was a hiatus for sure, but we really didn’t have much intention of getting back together. We all parted ways, needing a break. It wasn’t messy, but we had spent so many years with one another that some time apart was really good.
What made now the right time to get back together and work on another record? We talked about it here and there, but timingwise, it never worked out. Someone was away or too busy with something but this time it all seemed to click and feel right. Originally, we had only planned that one reunion show in Philly but through all of the preparation for that, we remembered how fun it was to be a band. The record came pretty naturally after that.
The Mother, The Mechanic & The Path was ambitious to say the least. Did work on that cause strains within the band? Absolutely. Recording that record was a stressful and draining experience. We didn’t always know exactly what we we’re doing with that record and, I can’t say for sure, but I’m pretty sure it didn’t come out the way Ace (Enders) had intended. That crushed him a little. Would you change anything about working on that record if you could do it again? It probably depends on who you ask, but no, I probably wouldn’t have done it that way. I feel a concise album with the 12 best tracks would have been the right move. I don’t regret it though and hindsight is always 20/20. Ok, what can you tell me about In Currents? I’m really proud of it. It feels like the right record to make at this age and at this time in our lives. I feel it represents the past history of the band but still moving forward & progressing. Nothing was forced or over-calculated with it either.

So is this a one-off reunion and album or are you guys back for good? We never like to plan too far into the future, but we will likely be making more music together. It’s just too fun not too. It is more difficult now, with everyone’s individual lives, families and obligations but we work around it. Touring has been really fun as well and I’m excited to get back out on the road but especially to go overseas. I don’t feel we got to do enough of that before. Was it odd at all that first practice after deciding to reform? Not really. For a little bit we we’re all a little reserved but a few minutes into it, we were making the same jokes we did four years ago...for better or worse. In some ways, a lot has changed. In others, nothing has changed. It’s just good to see everyone so happy again. What else is everyone else working on? Ace is always producing and recording bands at his studio (thelivingroomrecording.com). He also is the proud papa of two great kids. Bill (Lugg) has been spending a lot of time hiking and being one with nature. Sergio (Anello) has plans to move to Southern California which will surely make rehearsing even more difficult. Jeff (Kummer) is busy planning for his wedding and working at NBC. I spend most of time managing other bands and hanging out with my wife and cat.

Hoops Superstar Kevin Durant dishes on the NBA Finals, the London Olympics and his big-screen debut Thunderstruck BY DEMARCO WILLIAMS

AS VEGAS, JULY 2012— We all know that Kevin Durant and the U.S. Men’s National Basketball Team dominated at the Summer Games in London. But contrary to glossy NBC highlight reels, 83-point wins over Nigeria don’t just happen. They take lots of practice and team building. Same goes for winning NBA titles. Durant’s Oklahoma City Thunder came close to taking the ultimate prize this past season. KD knows it’s going to take a lot to pry the title from the Miami Heat’s hands. After an intense preOlympics practice, the 2012 NBA All-Star Game MVP and scoring champ told us all about it. Does it still sting to have come so close to winning the NBA championship? We made it to the Finals. We were a few possessions away from, you know, being up 2-1, being up 3-1 [in the Heat series]. I come out and do what I do. James [Harden] does what he does. Russell [Westbrook] does what he does. Serge [Ibaka] does what he does. So, it’s a good mix between all of us and we just got to continue to keep working hard.
it looks like, so I just got to make it look natural on camera, I guess, make it look real. But I’ve been there.

Is there a piece missing that you guys can add? Or is it just more work? We just gotta keep working. I leave that up to the GM and the owner of the team to see what we need. Other than that, I’m just going out there and doing my job as a player. How much fun is it to get up and down the court with these guys on Team USA? Man, it’s very fun. You’ve got some of the best players in the world coming off the Finals. This is my first time really playing basketball [since the postseason], so it was fun to get back out there.

OUR FAVORITE THINGS BY B. LOVE
A
S MY CAREER HAS EVOLVED over the years, I find myself more focused on adventure travel, exploring incredible ecotourism destinations around the world. When you’re living a good portion of your life out of a suitcase, there are certain must-haves that simply make life on the road a lot easier: I’ve never been what you’d call a brand loyalist, but EXOFFICIO (www. exofficio.com) has changed that. Their clothes are comfortable, lightweight, available in men’s and women’s sizes, roll up easily for packing, and use patented “Insect Shield” technology to protect you from biting insects. Because they are made to be handwashed and dried quickly, we usually take just a few pairs of underwear and convertible pants, then wash them every day. It’s pretty rare that my lady and I wear anything else on our travels. Our next trip will take us to the Middle Eastern nation of Jordan. We’ll be spending lots of time in the desert, where blistering daytime heat gives way to surprisingly cool nights. So I’m grateful to try out the new SeV Transformer Jacket from SCOTTEVEST (www. scottevest.com), which is made from 100% quilted nylon, has detachable sleeves, and boasts 20 pockets (for cell phone, passport, tablet, camera, handwarming, etc) designed with travelers in mind. But it’s not only functional: It’s fashionable, too! One of the biggest challenges we’ve faced as frequent travelers is storing all of the thousands of photos and videos from our trips in a way that allows us to easily access the files for editing, yet doesn’t slow down our laptops by hogging up all the memory. The solution? Our new BACKUP PLUS PORTABLE DRIVE FROM SEAGATE (www.seagate. com). Weighing less than ½-pound and measuring just 4.86x3.19 inches, this 1TB hard drive offers crossplatform compatibility and multiple installs, ensuring it’s the only backup we require for all our backup data storage needs. The hottest thing in travel photography is HDR, or high dynamic range imaging, which allows a greater dynamic range between a photo’s lightest and darkest areas. We’ve always taken the run-and-gun approach, but our interest in HDR (which uses bracketed exposures) led us to check out the 294 CARBON FIBER TRIPOD
FROM MANFROTTO (www.manfrotto.com). With a closed length of 24 inches, the tripod is small enough to fit inside our carry-on. But it’s also remarkably strong thanks to “nextgeneration” carbon tubing that maximizes stability and minimizes vibration. Can’t wait to try it out at Jordan landmarks such as the Treasury and Wadi Rum. This will be our first time ever visiting the desert, and my lady was bummed after breaking her sunglasses during a recent visit to the lake. Thankfully we got some stylish samples from the folks at MAUI JIM (www.mauijim. com) and COSTA DEL MAR ( www.costadelmar. com). The former line, including the swanky “Ginger” and “Lilikoi” styles, is perfectly made for getting noticed while riding camels or sipping tea at a Middle Eastern cafe; while the latter brand boasts patented light-limiting lenses perfect for a day out on the water. Conveniently enough, we’ll be visiting both the Red Sea and the Dead Sea… Another big problem we frequently face when we’re on the road is electricity, as we’re often trying to combine our love of the outdoors with our need to work. Rather than stay cooped up inside the hotel, we decided to try out the BRUNTON SOLARIS 26 RENEWABLE POWER SOURCE ( www. bruntongroup.com), and it has completely changed our lives. The unit has 8 flexible CIGS solar cells that can pump out 12 volts of power even in low-light conditions. It’s weatherproof, lightweight (28 ounces) and portable, folding up to 11x 8.75 x 1 inches while allowing us to charge cameras, phones and even laptops when we’re out in the field. Because we do travel so often and never check our bags, we tend to be pretty rough on luggage, often needing to replace our carryons once a year. But so far, ANTLER LUGGAGE’S LIQUIS HARDSIDE LINE (www.antler.co.uk) seems like it might be up to the task, with a tough polycarbonate exterior that seems impressively durable. The 4-wheel carryon is very light, weighing in at just 4.9 pounds and measuring 9 x 14 x 22 inches. The shell (available in numerous colors) boasts a sleek, waterfall-inspired design, but the tough, water-resistant zippers and rugged aluminum handle seem built to last. Which is good, because we have trips to the Canadian Arctic and Georgia’s coast lined up right after we get back from Jordan. PG 31 • insiteatlanta.com • January 2011
