memorable cover shoots in the 30-year history of INSITE Magazine, but this month’s holds the record for the most heartstopping moments in a 15-minute window of a three-hour photo shoot. It would never have gotten off the ground (pun intended) without the photographic artistry and experience of Igor Kraguljac; the master balloonist skills of Chief Pilot Dan McGuire of Sunrise Balloon Co.; and the extraordinary cooperation of the staff of the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum. With a 100-foot-tall, inflated hot air balloon powered by propane, whether you can safely inflate comes down to adequate space to layout the balloon and winds of no more than 4 miles per hour with gusts under 6 miles per hour – and no margin for error. The balloon was inflated in an empty section

of the parking lot in front of the museum and then “walked” into position by 16 holders dodging light poles, trashcans and the wind at the upper limit of the safety parameters. The “golden hour” to showcase the balloon’s glow at dusk is in reality about 15 minutes. Did I mention the FAA requires the balloon to be on the ground 30 minutes after sunset? It was a very, very exciting 15 minutes after nearly three hours prep time. In answer to the repeated question by the 30-odd bystanders who drove up simply because they were captivated by the beauty, size and majesty of the multi-story hot air balloon, yes, you can get a ride in the balloon. been considered a land of oil but what about beyond the coastline? Offshore oil drilling is an important element of the oil industry, but one that is hard to explain and understand. “The offshore oil drilling business is much like Texas A&M. From the inside out, you can’t explain it, and from the outside in, you don’t understand it,”

says John Hollowell, executive vice president of deep waters for Shell in the Americas. Offshore Drilling: The Promise of Discovery, the newest exhibit at the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum, seeks to unravel the complex world of offshore oil drilling. Encompassing everything from the industry’s humble beginnings to the newest and most innovative technology used today, the exhibit provides the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of the offshore oil industry in an engaging and interactive way.
The exhibit explores the facets in the search for oil offshore, made possible by the title sponsor Shell, and supporting sponsorships from Ensco, Schlumberger, and Move Resource Group. Dan Domeracki of Schlumberger says all the companies collaborated on and are represented in the exhibit, which is designed to give people the feel of what it is like on a rig. “The point of the exhibit is to be educational and fun,” says Miriam Winsten, technology engagement director at Schlumberger, who worked with Curator
Susie Cox in designing the exhibit. “Our goal was to tell the story in a way everyone could enjoy it and maybe even inspire people to go into the oil industry.” The exhibit highlights the work of President George H. W. Bush, who started in the oil industry in Midland-Odessa, later moving to Houston and then offshore into the Gulf of Mexico. He founded Zapata Oil in 1953 and went on to play an influential role in the development and use of Scorpion, an independent offshore leg jack-up rig launched in 1956 designed by R.G. LeTourneau and the first of its kind.
President Bush’s business savvy and fearless pursuit of innovation inspired and is reflected in the exhibit, which he had the opportunity to tour before the opening. The exhibit runs from March 31 until February 1, 2015, and is open during the Library and Museum’s regular visiting hours Monday through Sunday.
Summer Camp In conjunction to the exhibit, the Library will also host Fueling the Future, a five-week summer camp for children age 7 to 11. The camp will focus on energy, covering everything from where energy comes from and how to conserve
it, to the difference between renewable and nonrenewable resources. Campers will take an indepth look at petroleum and offshore drilling and have the opportunity to do science experiments, take field trips, and do art projects. The camp runs July 7 through August 8 and meets Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. For more information on the exhibit and summer camp, visit bushlibrary.tamu.edu or call (979) 691-4000. around porch greet patrons. A couple is seated, drinking cold beverages as a dog lay beside them. Music is playing in the background, but not necessarily the pop sensations found on the radio. The atmosphere feels familiar. Inside, Blackwater Draw Brewing Company is equally as welcoming. Friends gather around their favorite beers, the bartender offers suggestions on tap, and tanks line the back wall, each with their own name. Owner Chris Steele sits at one of the raised tables. His business partner Chris Weingart stands on the catwalk as he monitors a coffee porter currently brewing. Steele is the owner of another local pub, O’Bannon’s Taphouse, where he and Weingart worked together previously. Steele explains O’Bannon’s has helped influence the growing demand for craft beers locally.

“One day, Chris [Weingart] just threw it out there that he wanted to open a pub with me. A few days later I asked him if he was serious. Two years later, here we are,” says Steele. Together they have created a small brewery with the feel of a restaurant, Blackwater Draw. As Steele describes his friendship with Weingart he says, “We built this place drinking beer and listening to Hank Williams III. We see ourselves as rebels, we like to push buttons; if you really get to know us, if you see us in action, it fits us. We like that we are different at Blackwater Draw. We are the ‘outlaws.’” What makes Blackwater Draw different from other restaurants and bars? Steele says it’s the atmosphere. “The tanks were added to the front for that feel, right in front where you can see them. A lot of places keep them in the back. Chains that call themselves brewpubs often don’t really brew.
Here, you walk in and you see it, you smell it, you hear it. Everything.” Located just behind Northgate in an old remodeled house, Blackwater Draw is a fairly new addition to College Station. As a brewpub, customers can enjoy the tastes of craft beers and a locally sourced menu, all prepared in-house. But, why craft beers specifically? Steele says, “Because beer tastes good!” “Craft beers allow such a wide variety. America is driving
ingenuity in the beer industry. We are developing new beers the world has never seen – barrel beers, wild beers, new fermenting processes – American craft beer is bringing a new style and twist to the old brews. That’s what makes this so exciting,” says Steele. While there are house favorites consistently on the menu, Blackwater Draw uses a SABCO pilot system to test new recipes and give customers the opportunity to try some of these ‘new beers’. Steele says when these

2014, the Texas A&M Rec Center will implement some dramatic new changes to the facilities and services—a $54 million expansion funded without an increase in student fees. “We first opened in 1995, and since that time the student body has grown 25%,” says TAMU Rec Sports Executive Director, Dennis Corrington. Since the Rec Center has operated at capacity since its initial opening, the goal of the expansion is to offer more space and services to the
rapidly growing student body. “Three to five years ago, we were serving 85% of the student body and now we are serving 75%,” explains Corrington. “We just don’t have enough room to accommodate the growing student body.” The extensive expansion will entail 56,000 square feet of renovation and more than 113,000 square feet of construction—an overall increase in size of about 25%. “We are at a max for students who want to participate, so we are adding activity space,” says Corrington.
Major changes include increased strength and conditioning space, which will consist of personal training and indoor turf areas. Another gymnasium will also be added, featuring a multi-use court space. An outdoor plaza will be constructed with outdoor kitchen facilities. New activity rooms, a second entrance, and an additional eight-lane, 25-meter lap pool will also be added. “We will also be remodeling a lot of our current space,” says Corrington. “We will be
putting a new roof on the building and replacing all lighting with higher efficiency fixtures, which should reduce energy consumption.” Additionally, all mechanical components of the natatorium will be retrofitted and certain cosmetics, such as tile, paint, and bleachers, will be upgraded. “As far as a timeline goes, we should be operating in the new facilities by January 2016, and the construction will start in April,” says Corrington. Despite all the
changes, the Rec Center should remain fully open throughout the renovation and expansion process. “There may be some interruption and less activity space for a time period. We may have to limit the number of intramural teams, but for the most part, everything should remain operational during the construction period.” The general public may use the Rec Center by purchasing a daily pass. beers are tapped, they are often gone within the day. Previous “One Offs” include double milk stout, brown ale brewed with habanero, jalapenos, and tabasco peppers, a Ginger Witbier with grapefruit and blood oranges, and the BWD Hefeweizen. With each new brew comes the different (and sometimes very bold) flavors that make the Blackwater Draw experience so unique. However, Blackwater Draw is not

only for the craft beer enthusiasts. The menu also includes brunch, dinner, kids, and late night selections. “We stay as local as we can and we try to keep it seasonal, based on the local market. The menu items are cooked on an open wood pit for a smoky flavor. We serve burgers, brats, grilled chicken, soups and salads,” says Steele. For those who are interested in expanding their palette, Blackwater
Draw serves its own College Station Kolsch. “Everyone likes this. It’s a lighter bodied brewed ale, and easy to drink. We call this a session beer – you can sit around with friends and drink more than one,” says Steele. Blackwater Draw is open every day, 11a.m. to 2a.m. and is located at 303 Boyett in College Station. For more information, visit www. blackwaterbrew.com or call (979) 703- 6170. i

StageCenter Community Theatre Presents The Complete History of America (abridged) and You Can’t Take It with You. The Complete History of America (abridged) is a thrill ride through American history. “Experts” will take the audience back to the discovery of the new world and, in just 90 minutes, cover all the major events of American history from the kooky duo Lewis and Clark, to the First and Second World War. Three performers offer their teachings and opinions as they guide the viewers through the great and proud tradition that is the Complete History of America.... abridged. The performances run May 8 through 10, May 15 through 17, and May 22 through 24 at 7:30 p.m. The Sycamores may seem mad at first, but it doesn’t take long to realize that if they are mad, the rest of the world is madder. But in contrast to the delightful Sycamores, there are the unhappy Kirbys. You Can’t Take it with You is a romantic comedy in which the young and attractive Tony Kirbys falls in love with Alice Sycamore, but throws their marriage into question when he brings his parents to dine at the Sycamore house on the wrong evening. Though the parents don’t see eye-to-eye, Tony knows the Sycamores live the right way with love and care for each other and that his own family is the one that’s crazy. In the end, Mr. Kirby is converted to the happy madness of the Sycamores, but only after a visit by the ex-Grand Duchess of Russia, Olga Katrina, who is currently earning her living as a waitress, of course. The performances run July 17 through 19, July 24 through 26, and July 31 through August 2 at 7:30 p.m. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.stagecenter.info.

of Texas. Halfway between Navasota and Brenham, the state park is a quick 35-minute drive from College Station and well worth the trip. The state park houses Independence Hall, the Star of the Republic Museum, and Barrington Living History Farm, as well as an extensive Visitor’s Center and gift shop. The park is home to nearly three miles of walking and biking trails, which are free and open to the public, and include a picnic

Fanthorp Inn is located just 17 miles northwest of the park, on the opposite side of Navasota, and the Monument can be visited in the August Horst Municipal Park in Navasota.

barrington living history Farm Ever wonder what life was like out on the farm? At the Barrington Living History Farm, visitors have the opportunity to see and experience daily life working and
living off of the land in the 19th century. The main farmhouse at Barrington is the original home of Anson Jones, the last president of the Republic of Texas. Built in 1844, the house was relocated to the park grounds in 1936 and the surrounding outbuildings were constructed using the diaries of Jones to represent the farm he, his family, and his slaves inhabited. But these buildings are not just for show. Guests are encouraged to join in with the daily chores, whether it be working the garden, planting crops, making lunch, or hanging laundry out to dry. The farm is also home to a local heritage breed of cattle and several chickens and
hogs, which are bred and used for sustenance as they would have been 150 years ago. Active 364 days of the year, the farm can be visited daily from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and, just like days on the farm, every visit is a unique experience.
Star of the republic museum Administered by Blinn College, the Star of the Republic Museum is the perfect place for visitors to learn about the history and culture that shaped the Republic of Texas and its people. The first floor of the two-story museum walks guests through a timeline of Texas starting with the Native Americans that first inhabited the land and leads to the
formation of Texas as a nation. A handson room provides the opportunity for children (and adults) to continue learning through fun activities encouraging creativity and putting knowledge to the test. The museum doesn’t stop at the first floor. Because a timeline of events cannot fully capture the vast history of Texas’ origins, the people are the focus of the second floor, which displays unique artifacts from domestic life that work to unravel the 19th-century culture of Texas. The exhibit covers every facet of daily life and offers visitors a chance to understand the lifestyles of their ancestors, from hobbies such as quilting and
