Reshaping Your Body with Shapewear! By Jacqi Leyva-Hill, M.ED.
7. Comfort is Key: If you feel any discomfort, numbness, or difficulty breathing, the shapewear may be too tight. Opt for a size that provides shaping without compromising comfort. So there you have it, tips for reshaping your body with shape-wear all year round, but especially for the holidays season when people tend to gain 10-15 pounds. While shapewear can create a short term temporary illusion of a more sculpted figure, if not combined with a healthy diet and regular exercise, it doesn’t lead to long term body reshaping. For long-term changes, focus on a healthy lifestyle like the Mediterranean diet and do regular exercise at least three times a week for 30 minutes a day in your target fat burning heart rate zone. There is no magic shape-wear garment, diet or one exercise, but if you use these three elements in combination regularly throughout your life, you will start to make changes a little each day. Always consult with your doctor or a healthcare professional before starting this or any other program, especially if you have underlying health conditions. Until next month, healthy ((hugs))
Hello beautiful readers, I hope this December has started off with great amounts of enjoyment during this most wonderful time of the year for you and yours! During this festive season, I am sure that you will be donning some cute new Jacqi of Jacqi’s NuFitness Lllc clothes, so I thought I’d give you some tips for reshaping your body using Jacqi Leyva-Hill, M.Ed. shapewear if you choose to wear them under your party clothes and why you Christian Lifecoach, Personal Trainer & Financial Educator SHOULD wear them under your workout clothes too. So here we go! 17503 La Cantera Pkwy., Ste 104-168 As most of ya’ll know, I patented my own body-molding garment using shapeSan Antonio, Tx 78257 wear as the mold. After years of using shapewear over neoprene as a child and 210-410-0325 call or text for a faster response finally doing my Master’s thesis on their effects in combination with regular Www.thehappymommyguide.com exercise and a balanced diet, I discovered a way to help Remember, kids don’t need a perfect mommy, but they do need a happy People pick and choose where they lose with these “tools.” I learned that as we gain weight our fat cells expand like a balloon, and when we lose weight, those fat mommy. cells shrink like deflated balloons. My hypothesis was that if we can heat up the target fat cells by doing a pre-workout massage and compress the target fat cells with shape-wear and neoprene worn tight enough but not too too tight, then we can push out the free fatty acids from within the target fat cells into the blood to be used as a first available energy source. The trick is that you have to workout, aka EXPEND ENERGY, to use up the insides of the target fat cells so that they shrink to provide temporary contouring and body shaping effects. I also found that eating a Mediterranean based diet filled with lean meats and vegetables, while cutting out white sugar and white flour products, helped the body store less fat. Ultimately I concluded that my combination of diet, exercise, pre-workout massage with the shape-wear lined with neoprene led to longer lasting effects than traditional diet and exercise alone. So, I believe in the power of shapewear. But not everybody wants to sweat while out at a party, so I like shapewear that isn’t lined with neoprene for non-workout occasions. The reason I think shape-wear works while you are at a party, running errands, or just out to eat is because these types of garments that compress your stomach from the outside-in, helps you to get fuller faster so you eat less, which leads to weight loss. So especially if you are attending holiday parties with big buffets and sugary drinks, you may want to wear your shapewear. Here are some tips on using them effectively: 1. Choose the Right Size: Select shapewear that fits snugly but isn’t overly tight. Too tight garments can be uncomfortable and may not provide the desired shaping effect. It can also be harmful to your organs if worn too tight. 2. Focus on Problem Areas: Try different types of shapewear that are designed for specific areas, such as the abdomen, waist, or thighs. 3. Layering: For NuFitness body shaping workouts, layer over neoprene belts or wraps. For casual or party events, layer it under your regular clothing for additional body shaping and posture support. 4. Wear Under Appropriate Clothing: If you feel like people can see your shapewear under your fitted garments, wear it under loose or flowing garments. 5. Consider Compression Levels: Shapewear comes in various compression levels. Light compression provides a subtle smoothing effect, while higher levels offer more significant shaping. Choose the level based on your preferences and comfort. 6. Blend Seamlessly: Ensure that the edges of the shapewear blend seamlessly with your skin to avoid visible lines or bulges.

Too Hard Too Hype” As Kenneth Saldana, Richard Valadez, and Ronnie all approached the studio microphone at JR Productions, with a very natural state, they all started their lyrics, which had came from a rolled up paper that came out of Kenneth’s back pocket. As a friend of the group, Jorge Infante Jr and his father, who owned the JI Productions studio looked on and had already hit the button record, even though this was only to be a jam session. Kenneth looked on as to be in a gaze as the studio became blurry and was replaced with a stage with many fans on looking and screaming as if the scenery had changed. A root not to be grown but a seed was to be planted in San Antonio. While the mid 1980’s had introduced to us Run Dmc, Fat Boys, Kurtis Blow, and many others. In San Antonio, there was an evolution of hip hop that broke its own boundaries from the mid 1980’s to present. One group that emerged from the shadows with an inspiring history is “Too Hard Too Hype” that rooted from three teenagers from Sol Ross Middle School. “Mr. Poetry” aka Kenneth, “El Borachio” aka Richard, and Ronnie all grew in the era of break-dancing and graffiti art in the 1980’s and breathed, ate, and obsessed the new genre line of hip hop at the time. As always doing poetry rhymes and revising hip hop lines, the group decided to not just listen but pick up a new passion by purchasing their first drum beat machine and picked up the art of djing and beat-boxing as the group pitched in for equipment. Their passion led to hours of jam sessions and later to the rap battles that took place at Quincearas, school cafeteria, and even restroom as the battles led to one throwing in the towel after running out of verses. Their new founded name became “The Box Boys” and their winning battles led to a respectful title not to be reckoned with, which caught the attention of Jorge Infante Jr, who decided to have them record at his father’s studio known as JI Productions, known as a Tejano – Regional studio. The uniqueness grew as the studio gave them Latin style samples to use in their music. After days and long hours of jam sessions, the crew finally finished their new album in early 1989 known as “New Born Leader” with the new album, they all voted in joke of a phrase on a new name of “Too Hard Too Hype.” This album became the first hip hop album put on record LP here locally in San Antonio, Texas. The group had now located to Holmes and Memorial High School, and the new album brought the group fame, but reality was reaching new audiences, as they sold record LP promos and hit party events and outside clubs. Their stage presence was yet to be presented as they had already performed inside the legendary “Club Image” and they met with “Mix Master Mixxin Mando” aka Mando Garza of KTFM and Power 93 at Zooport. The legendary story was that the group showed to Mando’s home studio, in which he has already been producing his own beats and instrumental recordings. As they convinced Mando to play the record on the air, Mando saw potential, but a room for DEC 2023 Street Talk Magazine Page 8. www.streettalkmagazineoftexas.com

improvement. Mando decided to do his magic on the album and went to work in his home studio and gave the group instructional sessions in timing of the verses in sync with the beats. This work from Mando brought a whole new high energy beat vibe and would later turn to Mando becoming their record producer and producing their next album in 1991 known as “Welita’s Kitchen.” This album was ahead of its time so much that many people were in disbelief that the album was from a group of Hispanics. The album brought in their trademark slower-down song known as “I Have a Solution.” The song became sought after it popularized at Club Image and on underground radio stations, also because its awareness on suicide being a reality among teens in relationships at the time. After the album was released, the group grew fame and was sought after for performances into the 1990’s. As freestyle and the new hip hop also made its mark so was the new dance crew phase. Their stage presences became highlighted with a new dance crew presence adding on to their performances. The group recruited Chris CMajor of the “Pleasure Boys” dance crew who incorporated dance choregraphic sets, which included Valentino and Marc as part of the new dance crew. Kenneth even got involved with the new dancing phase. More members got introduced into the group including “Krayon” aka Chris Matthews and “Marc Setta-Go” aka Marc Garcia after making his debut as a dance crew dancer. The group got recruited to go onto concert tours and opened for many artists that included Vanilla Ice, Cover Girls, Johnny O, George Lamond, Timmy T and even for Selena at a Sunken Garden concert. The group got booked to many venues across San Antonio including Camargo Park , where a major artist headlined the show with Too Hard Too Hype opening. At the end of the show a massive line waiting for autographs lined up for Too Hard Too Hype instead of the major artist. 1992 became the group’s peak year of opening doors for this group.
In 1999, the group decided to reunite and put out a new album called “Ritalinn.”, While the album reunited the group they regrouped with some being attached with a prior group known as “Twice The Power, founded in the mid 1990’s. In 2002, a local past Club Image Dj known as Dj Samsation aka Sam Riojas, who had Future Shock Records decided to help the group by not only recording new material but rereleasing and re-mastering some of the group’s LP record early hits and put the material on CD. He produced and released the album under the name “TH2 Project.” Sam had met the group in the early days working at Club Image and from also being in his own group known as “Immortal.” After the “TH2 Project, the group continued doing concerts throughout the years at many events. While the group has separated in branching out in many successful projects like “Twice the Power” and present “5incaro$”, they remained bonded with brotherhood through friendship in the music industry and as a second family. They want to thank all the loyal listeners through-out the years that have help aid in not only putting them on the map , but in being a part of their history in opening doors for the hip-hop industry here in San Antonio! Their mission statement of not only doing what you love but have fun doing it has proven to many that history of our dreams can only be rooted if the seed is planted by our dreams . Will there be a reunification of this group? Only time can tell. Stay tuned for the continuation into part 2 of the “Evolution of San Anto Hip Hop” which includes “Twice The Power & the present 5incaro$.
The group signed on with G’Unique Inc. Records out of Houston, Texas, which had the group now touring the valley and down south. In the mid 1990’s Kenneth recorded with Tejano legends “Mazz” on a song. While the group had reached their peak, some had now grown families and decided to retire from the art for a few years to spend quality time with their familes and careers. While some fans wondered if this was the end of Too Hard Too Hype, others that ran into members sought for them to reunite. Would this be the end? Celebrating Twenty Years Anthony Hernandez & Jina Ink! A true love story that has totally shocked me and how I feel that God has definitely had his hand on us; because I believe in Christ, and I know that he selected him just for me; even when our lives became rough at times. We sacrificed important things and events. We spent time apart, we made mistakes, but we stayed driven in this business I call Jina Ink. I created my company in 2005,that's when I met Anthony Hernandez; He was performing with Mr Grammy Award Winner Joe Posada down the street at La Valencia, and he was one of my guests to my New Year's Eve Celebration. According to the Consumer Sentinel Network, there were almost 2.6 million consumer complaints filed in 2014, more than half a million up from the previous year with a reported $1.7 billion dollars being reported by victims on consumer scams and fraud. According to Emma Fletcher, these scammers hide in plain sight on social media platforms and reports to the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) Consumer Sentinel Network point to huge profits. It all starts on social media. In 2021, one in four people have reported losing money to fraud with a staggering $2.7 billion which is higher than any other method of contact. The sad news is that due to people not reporting these frauds, it reflects just a small fraction of the public harm. There are so many ways how social media helps scammers, by easily manufacturing a fake persona, or hacking into one’s profile and conning your friends by pretending to be you, says Ms. Fletcher. Scammers who place ads can even use tools available to advertisers to carefully target you based on personal details, such as your age, interests, or past purchases, costing them next to nothing to reach billions of people from anywhere in the world (Fletcher, 2023). According to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), when cybersecure is inadequate, it can lead to stolen identity and financial loss. Most scams and scammers have two main goals, to steal your money and your identity. You should know what to look for, how they work, and what to do, so you can protect yourself and your finances. Here are some steps you can take: Do not open email from people you do not know. If you’re unsure whether an email you received is legitimate, try contacting the sender directly via other means. Do not click on any links in an email unless you are sure it is safe. Be careful with links and new website addresses. Malicious website addresses may appear almost the same as legitimate sites. Scammers often use a slight variation in spelling or logo to lure people in. These malicious links may also come from friends whose email has unknowingly been compromised. - Secure your personal information. Before providing any personal information, such as your date of birth, social security number, account numbers, and passwords, be sure the website is secure. - Stay informed on the latest cyber threats. Keep yourself up to date on current scams. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) can provide you with Alerts. - Use Strong Passwords. Strong passwords are critical to online security. Review CISA guidance on choosing and protecting passwords. - Keep your software up to date and maintain preventative software programs. Keep all software applications up to date on your computers and mobile devices. Install software that provides antivirus, firewall, and email filter services. - Update the operating systems on your electronic devices. Make sure your operating systems (OSs) and applications are up to date on all your electronic devices. Older and unpatched versions of OSs and software are the target of many hacks. Read the CISA security tip on understanding patches and software updates for more information.

Dallas Cowboys In December It’s the month of December and the last quarter of the NFL season. Coach McCarthy is 46-19 in December games in his career as a head coach. The Cowboys host the Philadelphia Eagles for Sunday Night Football with so much on the line for the first game in December 2023. On the first meeting the Eagles scraped by. “This is an excellent opportunity for us to play in playoff-type games without playoff consequences and I think it serves very well,” said McCarthy. “Because December football is something that I personally have always enjoyed. I think it’s a great indication of where you are as a team and what you need to also do to get into the playoffs and be ready for the playoffs,” continued McCarthy. The Cowboys next two opponents are on the road to upstate New York in Buffalo December 17th against the Bills, then south to Miami to face off against the red-hot Dolphins on Christmas Eve before coming back home to AT&T Stadium to host another hot team, the Detroit Lions on December 30th. Former Cowboys head coach Jimmy Johnson will be inducted into the Ring of Honor at halftime. The month of December is very important as is every winter, as the Cowboys could find themselves in various situations. Dallas is currently one game out of first place in the NFC East. They could have sole possession of the division lead or stay put at as the No. 5 seed, or if not careful, they could see themselves out of the playoff picture (Watkins, 2023). References Watkins, C. Grace Reacting to people needing Help, Aid, Assistance. By Grace Hernandez
Okay how old were you when the Beatles were became a sensation in 1963? I was 11 yrs of age and attending Catholic School and the nuns were upset because I wore buttons of The Beatles on my sweater. I have been watching interviews of Sir Paul McCartney, Knighted by Queen Elizabeth and Sir Ringo Star, Knighted by Prince William. Their Biographies are very touching . Most were abandoned by their fathers at a young age. They all met as teenagers at a young age of 13 and 14. Ringo at age 18 was getting ready to move to Houston, Texas. Immigration paperwork became so complicated that he stayed in England only to later become a Beatle. The Beatles are known as the best band in the world, breaking fan attendance records at most of their performances. John Lennon was killed in New York and George Harrison died of Throat Cancer. The surviving Beatles, Paul Mc Cartney and Ringo Star still perform at 81 and 83 years of age. Mc Cartney has had massive Concert performances in Mexico City. Thousands have attended. Mc Cartney has spoken Spanish during his concerts creating huge frenzy with his fans Both Mc Cartney and Ringo Star refer to the friendship of all four Beatles as if they were Brothers. The last and newly released song Then and Now has returned Beatle Mania once again. Young and Old are once again listening to Beatles Songs and record breaking concerts sold out performances everywhere Paul Mc Cartney and Ringo Star perform. I have appreciated their true stories of growing up in tough family situations and becoming billionaires with their music industry and performances. Long live the Beatles.

James Brown James Joseph Brown, an American singer and musician was the central progenitor of funk music and a major figure of 20th-century music, he is referred to by various honorific nicknames, some of which include "the Hardest-Working Man in Show Business", "Godfather of Soul", "Mr. Dynamite", and "Soul Brother No. 1".In a career that lasted more than 50 years, he influenced the development of several music genres. Brown was one of the first 10 inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at its inaugural induction in New York on January 23, 1986. Brown began his career as a gospel singer in Toccoa, Georgia. He rose to prominence in the mid-1950s as the lead singer of the Famous Flames, a rhythm and blues vocal group founded by Bobby Byrd. With the hit ballads "Please, Please, Please" and "Try Me", Brown built a reputation as a dynamic live performer with the Famous Flames and his backing band, sometimes known as the James Brown Band or the James Brown Orchestra. His success peaked in the 1960s with the live album Live at the Apollo and hit singles such as "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag", "I Got You (I Feel Good)" and "It's a Man's Man's Man's World". During the late 1960s, Brown moved from a continuum of blues and gospel-based forms and styles to a profoundly "Africanized" approach to music-making, emphasizing stripped-down interlocking rhythms that influenced the development of funk music. By the early 1970s, Brown had fully established the funk sound after the formation of the J.B.s with records such as "Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine" and "The Payback". He also became noted for songs of social commentary, including the 1968 hit "Say It Loud – I'm Black and I'm Proud". Brown continued to perform and record until his death from pneumonia in 2006. Brown recorded and released 17 singles that reached No. 1 on the Billboard R&B charts. He also holds the record for the most singles listed on the Billboard Hot 100 chart that did not reach No. 1. Brown was posthumously inducted into the first class of the Rhythm & Blues Music Hall of Fame in 2013 as an artist and then in 2017 as a songwriter. He also received honors from several other institutions, including inductions into the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. In Joel Whitburn's analysis of the Billboard R&B charts from 1942 to 2010, Brown is ranked No. 1 in the Top 500 Artists. He is ranked seventh on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

THE SALLY DRESS! Three beautiful ladies came to me one day, the mother, a daughter Marcela and the grandmother. The grandmother was always coming in with the most beautiful warmest smile, a smile that would light up a room . The grandmother and mother Priscilla were so proud of Marcela, you could see it written all over their faces. Priscilla, the mother wanted the best for Marcela, they wanted a dream dress created. So, what did they do ? They came my way to make that happen. As for Marcela, she is such a great person, her spirit is very uplifting, her mother and grandmother did an amazing job in raising her, she's turning out to be a great strong smart young lady. They came into my dress boutique, (Royce Couture) with a great idea for a theme for Marcela R Garcia's birthday celebration. They wanted me to create a Sally Dress. You know, Sally, from the Christmas film Nightmare before Christmas. As soon as they came to me with the idea I sketched up three choices, they picked one of them (Sally Dress Choices). When It came down to the construction of this particular gown, it literally took me months to create. It took me months because I was already creating other Quinceanera & Wedding dresses. These beautiful women waited patiently for the construction of Their one of it's kind Sally Dress. Everything you see here was created by hand . In the film Night before Christmas , Sally is wearing a dress with patchwork on it, kind of like a quilt. Well, let me tell you, no one sells that particular patch work fabric. We actually had to hand create this piece of fabric one patch at a time. Each patch was created then sewn together. Once the fabric was done, I stood back and realized that I had just created a piece of fabric that no one in the world has. I Sandy Royce, had so much fun creating The Sally Dress. It seems as if each patch was coming out better and better . There was even a time where I was thinking about creating a whole line of clothing with that particular fabric , the patchy fabric that I had just created. The day finally came for the reveal of the dress, we all teared up after they saw the dress for the first time (happy tears). We all hugged, the Sally Dress was complete and beaming with sparkle. The main fabrics or satin and silk, with lots of black sequins and black glitter. It's definitely breathtaking. At times when I was working on it, it was hard to keep it covered between clients, but I did it . For it was being created at my dress boutique, price by piece. We wanted no one to see the design and we of course were afraid of anyone possibly taking the idea. In the end, everything came out perfect. This for sure, is one of my masterpieces. I'll for sure be talking about the Sally Dress for the rest of my life. Although couldn't post any pictures or a video of the reveal , I was so proud of the dress. The time has come to where I can now post the video of the reveal of the dress and the pictures of my latest masterpiece. They celebrated her event, her birthday event in the beginning of December 2023. Marcela, if you're reading this, I wish you the best in life and all the happiness and peace in the world, you truly deserve it. "Marcela chose a sally dress because she has loved the movie since she was young. Being that her sweet 16 is between Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas we felt that The nightmare before Christmas theme was perfect for her!!! We heard of Sandy Royce through Facebook and reached out with a vision. Sandy drew up some designs and we knew right away she could bring it to life! We couldn’t be any happier with our one of a kind dress!" Says Priscilla, Marcela's mother . Street Talk Magazine Page 32 www.streettalkmagazineoftexas.com DEC 2023
~ X-MAS BUNUELOS Show Up to the Christmas Party with the lightest, crispiest desert!
What Are Buñuelos?
Ingredients 1 cup (8floz/225ml) boiling water 2 cups (10oz/284g) allpurpose flour 1 tablespoon granulated sugar 1 teaspoon baking powder ground cinnamon 1 tablespoon anise seeds
Buñuelos is a Mexican dessert made of dough that is flattened into a tortilla shape and then fried. Sometimes they are topped with cinnamon and sugar, but they’re also topped with piloncillo syrup—a simple syrup made with unrefined whole cane sugar, which has a more caramel, earthy taste than other sugars.
HARD TO SOLVE MAZE
Boil the water and combine it with the anise seeds. Let it steep until the water cools but is still warm. Strain out the seeds and then discard them. In a medium bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. In another bowl, whisk the egg, butter, and vanilla. Then, knead this into the flour mixture. Add the warm anise tea, 1 tablespoon at a time, to the dough until a soft and smooth dough is formed. You won’t need all of the tea. Cover and allow the dough to rest for 30 minutes. As your dough rests, mix the sugar and cinnamon and set aside. Once the dough has finished resting, divide the dough into 12 equal parts. On a floured surface, roll the dough as thinly as possible. Stack the rolled portions between sheets of parchment paper, so they don’t stick together and you don’t have 12 discs all over your kitchen! Heat about 1-inch (3cm) of oil in a frying pan and set up a baking sheet, either lined with a wire rack or paper towels, on the counter next to the pan. Place the bowl of cinnamon sugar nearby. Once the oil is hot (if you have a thermometer, it should be around 350°F/180°C), fry the buñuelos for a minute or two, pressing them down into the oil until golden brown. Flip and fry the other side for an additional minute or two until golden brown. Transfer the buñuelos to the rack/paper towels, let drain for a minute, and then sprinkle with cinnamon sugar while still hot. Repeat with the remaining buñuelos. Finish

Born on November 11, 1946 and raised in a west side barrio of San Antonio, Texas, Raúl spent twelve years of Catholic school education. In 1965, college was financially beyond his family’s means. Two years into a four-year voluntary commitment to the Navy, he received orders to PCF Crew Training in Coronado, California. PCF stood for Patrol Craft Fast – a Swift Boat. He was designated the crew’s radar / radioman. Combat boat duty was his next duty assignment in the Republic of Vietnam. Four months after arriving, PCF-79 and her crew of one junior grade officer and five enlisted men, led a daring four-vessel seaborne intercept mission off the Quang Ngai Province coast. On July 15, 1967, a 120-foot steel-hulled resupply North Vietnamese trawler was attacked by PCF-79’s crew and forced aground at the mouth of the Sa Ky river, on the tip of the Batangan Peninsula. More than 90-tons of ammunition and supplies were kept from awaiting Viet Cong hands. The crew and other players involved in the mission were decorated at an awards ceremony held in Da Nang, Republic of Vietnam. Raúl began his freelance writer journey publishing in the former Houston Post and as a contributing writer for Nuestras Vidas Magazine, an English-written monthly featuring stories of successful Hispanics in Houston. Driven by the haunting memory of PCF-79’s lead petty officer, Boatswain’s Mate First Class, Bobby Don Carver, Raúl began piecing together his recollections of Swift Boat duty. Carver fired the 81mm mortar round into the trawler’s pilot house. CAPTURING SKUNK ALPHA, is the saga of Swift Boat PCF-79 and her crew during Operation Market Time, the U.S. Navy’s coastal surveillance force. The work in progress was selected as one of the top ten national finalists in the Books for Life Foundation, New Voices in Literature Awards competition (2003). He also contributed historical research for Medal of Honor—A Vietnam Warrior’s Story (M. Sgt. Roy P. Benavidez, SF, Ret.). Mr. Herrera retired from Dannenbaum Engineering Corporation, Houston, Texas in 2010. He served as a board director and president of the Swift Boat Sailors Association. He is a member of VFW Post 8790, Houston, Texas. He is married and currently calls Richmond, Texas, home. https://skunkalpha.com DEC 2023

One Word Journal! My name is Rebecca Garcés-Williams and I am the creator of One Word Journal: Weekly Devotions: Strengthening Your Faith with One Word. This project came to me as I was looking for a specific journal to help me with my one-word practice. I couldn’t find what I was looking for so I decided to make one. I shared the idea with a friend who then encouraged me to share it with the world. So I did. In years past, my pastor has invited the Rebel Church congregation to find a word or scripture to hold on to for the year. This is meant to be practiced as opposed to New Year’s resolutions. Research has shown that only 9% of Americans who make resolutions keep them. These studies show that 23% quit resolutions by the end of the first week and 43% quit by the end of January. Using the one-word practice has been extremely helpful in my growth in my faith and I hope this will be true for anyone with this book in their hands. The One Word Journal allows readers to read the Bible intentionally throughout the year. It is designed for anyone, anywhere in their walk with Christ. It has been created to accommodate 52 weeks of entries. It is undated so that it can be picked up (or even gifted) any time of the year. The reader is prompted to start with gratitude. Many people begin their week with dread of Monday for various reasons. It is a fact of neurology that the brain cannot be in a state of appreciation and fear at the same time; other studies have highlighted that gratitude can buffer you from “the blues”, promote optimism, and, in general, lift your attitude. So, the writer should begin the week by writing out things and people they are grateful for in this section. Each week showcases a scripture from different versions of the Bible. The reader should read the verse, write it out, and meditate on it. Ideally, the reader should write down what they draw from the verse; particularly any specific words or thoughts that jump out to them. And then the journal entry should close out with writing out what is on the writer’s heart. Are there people or things that are being prayed for? Are there concerns or ideas that just need to be written out and made tangible? In my experience, when I’ve seen prayers come to fruition, it’s been such a blessing to look back at the time when I first wrote that down. It brings me so much joy and I hope to help others achieve that in their walk with Christ. This journal is available on Amazon, https://shorturl.at/hnqsX and Through Grace Coffee located at 2508 North Main Avenue, San Antonio, TX 78212. Street Talk Magazine Page 35. DEC 2023

As a songwriter, after five years of ups and downs, plus learning from the mistakes of their growing pains as they hit bumps along a rocky road, Cardenas penned “Piedras En El Camino,” a song about facing, overcoming obstacles, and learning to stay focused on where we’re going. This tune, which anyone can relate to, is featured on their 2015 compact disc album titled “Sueños” (“Dreams”). This year, they released “Festival De Acordeones,” a 16-song CD in which each band member gets to shine. This is the album that includes the heartfelt “Corrido De Los Sáenz de Edcouch-Elsa,” which South Bend, Indiana Tejano music promoter René Salazar Sáenz wrote about the tragic death of all his brothers Ovidio, Guadalupe Jr. aka Lupito, and Rogelio aka Roy - who never reached the age of 45. This is a corrido that was previously recorded by Julián Álvarez with Frankie Caballero Sr. Then it was arranged by Rocky Beltrán and sung by Salomon Ramos of Retoño with the musical accompaniment of Rosendo Beltrán. This version features an opening grito and intro by Little Joe. The grito Little Joe was kind enough to do as a favor for Sánez was heard throughout the Tobin’s Center green room when he recorded it for his longtime friend on New Year’s Eve in 2021. However, the song with the grito was never released for sale. So, imagine the astronomical numbers of CDs it would have sold. But don’t despair because it can be heard at www.youtube.com/watch?v=Md13WUk6jdY. Now the good news is that thanks to Conjunto Puro Corazón, the corrido – sans Little Joe - is available at Janie’s Record Shop, Del Bravo Record Shop, Amazon, iTunes and Spotify. Bruno Mars WHAT’S A SAGITTARIUS? Sagittarius is a mutable sign, meaning it is associated with adaptability and flexibility. This perfectly reflects the archers' deep-rooted desire for change. Sagittarians are born to explore and it is critical that these archers have the freedom to roam. (Sagittarius rules the thighs, so these archers are always on the move.) Fueled by wanderlust, these archers can be found traversing all corners of the world on thrill-seeking expeditions, chasing after geographical, intellectual, and spiritual adventures. Sagittarians are on a perpetual quest for knowledge, which makes them incredible storytellers, entertainers, and creatives. It's not all fun and games, however: Sagittarius is notorious for its signature bluntness, and their "brutal honesty" can often lead to misunderstandings, communication breakdowns, and lots of hurt feelings. But the good news? Sagittarius doesn't take anything too seriously, so it's hard to stay mad at these wild optimists. Sagittarius individuals are also known for their curiosity and energy, making them natural travelers of the zodiac. Their open mind and philosophical views drive them to explore the world in search of the meaning of life. As extroverts, they are optimistic, enthusiastic, and always ready for change. While they are often preoccupied with mental work, they have the ability to turn their visions and thoughts into concrete actions and circumstances.
COMING IN DEC!
Sagittarians are very open-minded when it comes to dating and they like to be with people who challenge them to look at the world differently. They might be drawn to partners who are from different backgrounds or who grew up in another country, as they always want to be learning from their relationships.

MELODIES OF TEXAS: PART III
A Musicology of the Lone Star State! By Don Mathis The late 60s wave of Texas Rock was just as ground-breaking as the previous decade. From Stephen Stills to Stevie Ray Vaughn, Boz Scaggs to Don Henly, Edgar and Johnny Winter; Texas musicians were masters of Psychedelia, Rock, and Blues. How about we listen to Janis Joplin sing a song written by another Texas musician, Kris Kristofferson, "Me and Bobby McGee." The first time I saw ZZ Top, I didn’t know who they were. They were just a Little Ol' Band from Texas who opened for Janis Joplin the last time I saw her. About a year before she died, Joplin adopted the nickname ‘Pearl.’ I’d like to introduce you to an obscure instrumental tribute on ZZ Top's ‘Rio Grande Mud,’ "Apologies to Pearly." When I’m away from Texas for any length of time, I begin to miss Mariachi music. Troubadours serenade with a variety of stringed instruments, matching outfits with tight trousers, short jackets, shiny boots, wide bow ties, maybe sombreros, and glittering chingaderas sewn onto their pants legs. Currently, the hottest hit in el mundo de Mariachi is "Wemby, Go Spurs Go!" Mariachi is muy Mexicano. And then there’s Tejano, Conjunto, Canciones, Corridos, Cumbias, Orquesta, Rancheras, and Tex-Mex. Trini Lopez rocked the folk scene with “La Bamba.” Johnny Rodriguez had a string of hits “Ridin' My Thumb to Mexico.” Sunny Ozuna & the Sunglows used to “Talk to Me” with their Chicano Soul and Joe King Carrasco can make any day a “Party Weekend.” But, to me, the true kings of Tex-Mex are from Dallas and San Antonio. Few may have heard of Domingo Samudio, but mention "Ring Dang Doo" or "Li'l Red Riding Hood," and the light goes on. Come on and count it with Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs, Uno, dos One, two, tres, cuatro; Yes, "Wooly Bully.” Child prodigy Doug Sahm shared the stage with Hank Williams on the Louisiana Hayride in Shreveport in the 1940s. Back home in San Antonio, little Doug dug Mexican Conjunto and blues from his East Side predominately Black neighborhood. Then he moved to San Francisco, and, popularizing on the British invasion craze, named his band the Sir Douglas Quintet. Can you remember remembering 1965? That woman, walking down the street? "She’s About a Mover!" Fellow band member with the Quintet, Augie Meyers has a string of hits as a solo artist. "Hey, Baby, Que Paso" is almost considered the National Anthem in San Antonio. Years after the Quintet disbanded, Doug and Augie joined with two other superstars to form the Texas Tornados.

Flaco Jiminez is descended from a family of Conjunto pioneers. His vocal ability and talents on the accordion have brought recognition and awards in the realms of Conjunto, Norteño, Tejano, Country, and Rock. Because the accordion was introduced to the conjunto community by the Germans, let's remember "In Heaven There Is No Beer," sung by Flaco in Spanish, English, and German. Freddy Fender had hits in Rockabilly, Country, Swamp Pop, and bilingual versions of Rock, before he joined the Texas Tornados. Open yourself a longneck beer bottle, drink it down, and open another, and let’s listen "Before the Next Teardrop Falls." What about Folk Music? Texas has got ‘em – but you may want to call it Alt-Country or Americana. Townes Van Zandt, Robert Earl Keen, David Allen Coe, Billy Joe Shaver, Michael Martin Murphy, Gary P. Nunn, and Jerry Jeff Walker. Hey, what is it about Texas songwriters having three names? Don’t forget Kinky Friedman and Guy Clark. Want more? Max Stalling, Jack Ingram, Kevin Fowler, Cory Morrow, Randy Rogers, Pat Green, Wade Bowen. Let’s listen to Willis Alan Ramsey sing about those "Northeast Texas Women." Don’t discredit Texas women; musical examples abound in every genre: Old Country, Tanya Tucker; New Country, Kacey Musgraves; Blues, Marcia Ball; Americana, Tish Hinojosa; Easy Listening, Vikki Carr; Tejano, Lydia Mendoza; Folk Rock, Edie Brickell; Western, Dale Evans; Pop, Ashlee Simpson; Punk, Texas Terri; Indie Rock, Girl in a Coma; and Bluegrass, Mare Winningham. Who have I left out? Michael Nesmith of the Monkees, "Papa Gene’s Blues;" B.J. Thomas, "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head;" Selena, "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom;" Buttercup, "Let It Drop;" Ornette Coleman, "Free Jazz;" Erykah Badu, "Tyrone;" Beyoncé, "Love on Top;" Lee Ann Womack, "I Hope You Dance;" Waylon Jennings, “Amanda;” Christopher Cross, “Sailing...” And Miranda Lambert, “White Liar;” B.W. Stephenson, “My Maria;” Johnny Bush, "Whiskey River;" Carol Burnett, “The Trolley;” Adolph Hofner, “South Texas Swing;” Joe Tex, “Skinny Legs and All;” Barbara Mandrell, “I Was Country When Country Wasn't Cool;” and the Jim Cullum Jazz Band, “Wild Man Blues.” Any other musicians from Texas? Oh, yeah. Don’t forget Willie Nelson singing "On the Road Again."

The duo's material is known for containing influences of honky-tonk, mainstream country, and rock, as well as the contrast between their singing voices and on-stage personalities, although some of their music has also been criticized as formulaic. Their 1992 single "Boot Scootin' Boogie" helped repopularize line dancing in the United States, and 2001's "Only in America" was used by both George W. Bush and Barack Obama in their respective presidential campaigns. Brooks and Dunn have collaborated with several artists, including Reba McEntire, Vince Gill, Sheryl Crow, Mac Powell, Billy Gibbons, Jerry Jeff Walker, and Luke Combs.

BROOKS & DUNN Brooks & Dunn are an American country music duo consisting of Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn, both of whom are vocalists and songwriters. The duo was founded in 1990 through the suggestion of songwriter and record producer Tim DuBois. Before their formation, both members were solo recording artists, having charted two solo singles apiece in the 1980s. Brooks also released an album for Capitol Records in 1989 and wrote hit singles for other artists. The duo signed to Arista Nashville after their foundation. They have recorded eleven studio albums, one Christmas album, and five compilation albums for the label. They also have released 50 singles, of which 20 went to number one on the Hot Country Songs charts and 19 more reached top 10. Two of these number-one songs, "My Maria" (a cover of the B.W. Stevenson song) and "Ain't Nothing 'bout You", were the top country songs of 1996 and 2001, respectively, according to the Billboard Year-End charts. The latter is also the duo's longest-lasting number-one single on that chart at six weeks. Several of their songs have also reached the Billboard Hot 100, with the number-25 peaks of "Ain't Nothing 'bout You" and "Red Dirt Road" being their highest there. Brooks and Dunn also won the Country Music Association Vocal Duo of the Year award every year between 1992 and 2006, except for 2000. Two of their songs won the Grammy Award for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal: "Hard Workin' Man" in 1994 and "My Maria" in 1996. All but two of the duo's studio albums are certified platinum or higher by the Recording Industry Association of America; their highest-certified is their 1991 debut album, Brand New Man, which is certified sextuple-platinum for shipments of six million copies. After announcing their retirement in August 2009, they performed their final concert on September 2, 2010, at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee. Both Brooks and Dunn have continued to record for Arista Nashville as solo artists. Dunn released a selftitled album in 2011, which included the top-10 country hit "Bleed Red", while Brooks released New to This Town in September 2012. The duo reunited in 2015 for a series of concerts with Reba McEntire in Las Vegas. In 2019, the duo was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Photo Courtsey

Dolly Parton’s Holiday Banana Pudding Dolly Parton has said time and time again that her mother’s banana pudding is one of her favorites. According to Dolly, one of her neighbors near her family’s Tennessee home owned a store. They would tell Dolly’s mother when bananas were going bad so that she could buy them for a cheaper price. The family knew that on these days, her mom would make Courtsey her famous banana pudding. Ingredients 3/4 cup sugar 1/4 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon salt 3 cups 2% milk 3 large eggs 1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract 8 ounces vanilla wafers (about 60 cookies), divided 4 large ripe bananas, cut into 1/4-inch slices In a large saucepan, mix sugar, flour and salt. Whisk in milk. Cook and stir over medium heat until thickened and bubbly. Reduce heat to low; cook and stir 2 minutes longer. Remove from heat. Advertisement In a small bowl, whisk eggs. Whisk a small amount of hot mixture into eggs; return all to pan, whisking constantly. Bring to a gentle boil; cook and stir 2 minutes. Remove from heat. Stir in vanilla. Cool 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. In an ungreased 8-in. square baking dish, layer 25 vanilla wafers, half of the banana slices and half of the pudding. Repeat layers. Press plastic wrap onto surface of pudding. Refrigerate 4 hours or overnight. Just before serving, remove wrap; crush remaining wafers and sprinkle over top. DEC 2022

Jokester! SIN OF LYING A minister told his congregation, "Next week I an to preach about the sin of lying. To help you understand my sermon, I want you all to read Mark 17." The following Sunday, as he prepared to deliver his sermon, the minister asked for a show of hands. He wanted to know how many had read Mark 17. Every hand went up. The minister smiled and said, "Mark has only sixteen chapters. I will now proceed with my sermon on the sin of lying." BINGO!

BEDTIME STORIES! A seven-year-old girl walked into her mother's bedroom in the middle of the night and asked her to tell her a bedtime story. The mother wasn't thrilled with the request and said, "It's almost two in the morning." "I know, Mommy, but I had a bad dream, and I won't fall back asleep without a story," replied her daughter. The mother scooted in bed, raised the sheets, and said, "Ok, get in here with me. We'll wait for your father to come back, and I bet he will have a heck of a story for us both." LET’S FLY!
A man was struck by a bus on a busy street in New York City. He lied, dying on the sidewalk as a crowd of spectators gathered around. “A priest! Somebody get me a priest!” the man gasped. A policeman checked the crowd but found no priest, no minister, and no man of God of any kind. “A PRIEST, PLEASE!” the dying man said again. Then, out of the crowd, stepped a little old man of at least eighty years of age. “Officer,” said the man, “I’m not a priest, but for fifty years now I’ve been living behind St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Third Avenue, and every night I’m listening to the Catholic litany. Maybe I can be of some comfort to this man.” The policeman agreed and brought the old guy over to the dying man. He kneeled down, leaning over the injured, and said in a solemn voice, “B – 4. I – 19. N – 38. G – 54. O – 72.”
A blonde went to a flight school insisting she wanted to learn to fly that day. As all the planes were currently in use, the owner agreed to instruct her on how to pilot the helicopter solo by radio. He took her out, showed her how to start it, gave her the basics, and sent her on her way. After she climbed 1000 feet, she radioed in. “I’m doing great! I love it! The view is so beautiful, and I’m starting to get the hang of this.” After 2000 feet, she radioed again, saying how easy it was becoming to fly. The instructor watched her climb over 3000 feet, and was beginning to worry that she hadn’t radioed in. A few minutes later, he watched in horror as she crashed about half a mile away. He ran over and pulled her from the wreckage. When he asked what happened, she said: “I don’t know! Everything was going fine, but as I got higher, I was starting to get cold. I turned off the big fan, but I can’t remember what happened after.”
WHO’S THE BOSS? A guy was doing some handyman work at a house. Across the room, there was a large gray parrot on a perch. At one point, the family dog came into the room and jumped up on the couch. The parrot said, “Get off the couch!” and the dog jumped down immediately. After a while, a small child came into the room with toys, and the parrot said, “Go back to your room!” The child picked up his toys and left without hesitation. The guy turned to the parrot and said, “I’ve never seen anything like that before.” The parrot looked at the guy and said, “Get back to work!” Answer: C FRANCE
