#ImWithNeka NEKA CLEAVER
Photo by Mariela Naplatanova Miss Neka born and raised in San Antonio has been working for the community with her father since she was 15. Since Neka was a seconddegree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and Nationally ranked on the Jr Tennis circuit; her dad made her the designated tennis and karate couch for everything! She helped him with a youth program called YWHP that was located at Fairchild Tennis Center on the East side of SA. Helping youth learn tennis, karate, nature, and day to day living skills. Neka attended college at Texas A& M University and founded a community service Sorority to help people in the area. When her parents passed, she put all her teachings together and created Tha1Radio. Over the years Miss Neka was the number one host and morning show personality at KTFM, helped launch KROV, appeared on several daytime talk shows and hosted everything from the main stages at Fiesta, the city New Year’s Eve Celebration, the MLK March, Taste of New Orleans, concerts and so much more! Miss Neka co-founded Black Business San Antonio to bring site and support to the thousands of black business owners in the city. She hosts events to spotlight special talents, small business, woman, youth and whoever else needs a platform. Tha1 was founded so people can be heard and seen by the city and beyond. She interviews city leaders every month to keep the community informed and she opens her doors to the community as a catalyst to help make dreams come true.
Miss Neka also hosts an annual Christmas giveback that provides gifts for 50 families and over 150 kids every year, a backpack drive that provides schools in the area with backpacks and Tha1Awards which recognizes 21 individuals who give back to the community. In the last year she has received recognition from: Antioch Church for Women of Christ in the Community, YMCA Cornerstone award for her work on the Eastside, WOAI/FOX NEWS as A Difference Maker in SA and by the SA Art Foundation. This group honored Miss Neka by using her image for a city mural as a community leader. The mural happens to be featured on the 2-story building that she offices out of today. If you ask Neka if she is proud of what she has done.... she will laugh and say: It feels like I have not done anything yet. Future plans are to grow the opportunities Tha1Media Hub can provide and the areas in which we can help. Continue to have a space for people to be creative and a media outlet to be heard.
"My continues goal is to help more people, create millionaires in our communities, bring back the neighborhoods where people care, communicate with each other and help one another succeed! Anything that brings glory to the Kingdom of God and the communities that we live in." 1. Who or what inspired you run for D2 Councilwoman? God led me to the decision, but the people of the community are who inspired and push me to run. It is time that our district is represented by someone who knows the history, the future opportunities and most importantly the people. 2. Do you have a Team or Staff helping you in your journey? I have a team of really awesome people who are passionate about serving the district. I thank God that we have so many volunteers and community members who want to help. 3. How are you going to help build collaborations throughout our city? By creating relationships with large corporations, small business, the faithbased community, city and community leaders. I believe it is all about being pro-active and finding ways to help the city as a whole, while moving the district forward.
4. How are you going to help create economic streams for our city? it starts with out district. Ensuring business owners are educated on the opportunities for growth and prepared to handle contracts. We will also help in hosting events that brings economic opportunities. 5. How can you help small businesses? We have already started a D2 resource guide and website where small business can list their services for free. We will also try and create more marketing outlets that are affordable. We also launched the Eastside Chamber of Commerce to help provide a platform for business growth.
6. Do you have a Resource plan in place to help connect businesses? We have a plan to build business resource centers across the district that will provide educational classes, business resources and office resources to help small business operations. 7. When it comes to crime, how can you help make your community feel safe? Increase safety while decreasing crime is part of my platform. We will need to focus on several different areas that include: programs for at risk youth, reentry program, working with our patrolling officers and working with community policing programs to help decrease crime. We want to increase safety by providing free safety classes for community members, social issue sessions, officer meet and greets to get to know the community, Safety tips, education for youth and seniors. 8. Closing thoughts or main message for running for D2 Councilwoman? I am excited to represent the district and the people who live, work, and play in D2. I am excited to work with all of our groups that make up this great city. I am excited to bring a pro-active leadership who is not afraid to stand tall for the people. It is time that District 2 is no longer ignored, used, or taken advantage off. It is time for a leadership that will be good stewards of the people. 9. Any upcoming Campaign Events, Fundraisers, etc. We have online GOTV rallies every month and various fundraiser events scheduled.
