EDITORIAL bright as only a Shadow can be.

Enrico Barbieri Editor in chief

This might sound like a paradox but i’m quiet sure you will agree with me as soon as you watch the fashion shooting we did in Frankfurt feauturing a brazilian model riding a Japanese beauty: The honda Shadow. brazil is the country where pope Francis flew right after blessing bikers and bikes aligned in front of St. peter’s church last June. The Eternal city of Rome hosted and witnessed an incredible event marking the 110th anniversary of harley-davidson. The white pontiff met a horde of riders dressed in black leather and seemed to enjoy their company, that’s something we never saw before. now the question is: does this ultra cool pope also ride motorcycles? we’ll see. we might ask it to david uhl the first ever licensed oil painter for the milwaukee based motor company. his style is unique and his paintings are terrific, i think it’s the right time to hang one of them in my office. cambodia sounds like a mysterious land far away from the known world. italian photographer Alessandro Vannucci takes us there and shows us how magic this country can be. magic is the right word to describe a Formula 1 legend: James hunt. The movie Rush, directed by Ron howard, is coming out in September and tells the spectacular story of the british driver who was adored like a Rock Star and lived each day as if it was his last one. don’t miss our article, you won’t regret it. All the pages are loaded with speed, style, braveness and adrenaline here on inspire. Sit back and enjoy another ride!

hello riders and centaurs, boys and girls, lazy bums, punks and my fellow rockers! it’s great to be here and share some thoughts about motorcycles and Rock ‘n’ Roll. The summer is on fire almost all over the place, the perfect season for a ride, whether you drive a naked, a custom built or a street bike. my favourite one right now is a three pistons mV Agusta, the perfect companion when you need to bend hard. but when i’m in town, whether i’m heading to my Radio Station or simply cruising with my girl Rachele, the Guzzi V7 total black is far a better choice. believe it or not, i even got a motorcycle parked right into my office. That’s how my life is, speed and rhythm, two wheels and Rock ‘n’ Roll! it’s no surprise that i love both world championships, Sbk and motoGp. it’s great to be there as part of the press and race commentator on the italian circuits but sometimes it’s even better just to simply walk the paddock like everybody else and breath the strong smell of gasoline. haven’t you noticed? Seems like lately some of the guys have grown a fashion victim syndrome! This is all part of the game but i really hope the riders and two championships won’t follow the “posh and snobbish” Formula 1 way because it would take away all the beauty and pureness of this sport. wouldn’t it be nice to go back in time when you could see all the pilots and mechanics busy grilling some meat behind their vans, cheering and sharing glasses with the radio on blasting out some Johnny cash, Elvis and Ramones. That would be fun! i guess this is the way barry Sheene, Steve mcQueen or pasolini and Jarno were living, isn’t it? you might say i’m a dreamer, but i really think that it would be better to remember our roots and still live with passion and style. The younger generations should think about it as well instead of focusing too much on the “easy way” the Reality Shows promote everyday. music and Art admit no shortcuts, some people got talent other need to work harder but both have to be focused and be strong to pursue their dreams, just like riders do when they try to get the pole. if you want to share some thoughts about music and bikes catch me up on twitter @virginringo. now pull the gas folks and listen to some good Rock ‘n’ Roll.

Carl Jung said once “Everyone carries a shadow and the less it is embodied in the individual’s conscious life, the blacker and denser it is”. Everyone wants to ride on a Shadow, that’s what she said instead, like a walk on the wild side of life where the light meets the night, where the dark comes across the bright. The sun was creeping out as she was sneaking in under cover of darkness.

THE LEGENDARY MILWAUKEE BASED MOTOR COMPANY CELEBRATES ITS 110TH ANNIVERSARY WITH A SERIES OF PAN-GLOBAL EVENTS AROUND THE WORLD. THE ICONIC V-TWIN ENGINE IS STILL ROARING AS LOUD AS EVER

Harley-Davidson dominated dirt track racing during the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s

H

arley-Davidson is one of the most iconic brands in the world. You know Harley even if you don’t ride bikes yourself. It was back in 1903 that William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson made available to the public the first production Harley-Davidson motorcycle. The bike was built to be a racer, with a 3-1/8 inch bore and 3-1/2 inch stroke. It all began in Milwaukee, the legend was born in a wooden shed with the words “Harley-Davidson Motor Company” crudely scrawled on the door. History repeats itself, from humble origins right to the top of the world. In 1909 Harley introduces its first V-twin powered motorcycle. With a displacement of 49.5 cubic inches, the bike produces seven horsepower. The image of two cylinders in a 45-degree configura-

tion would become fast one of the most enduring icons of motorcycle history. Harley-Davidson has always been known for building extremely tough motorcycles. This must have been the reason why the U.S. military force chose to use their machines in World War I. At War’s end in 1918, it is estimated that the Army used some 20,000 motorcycles in their efforts, most of which were Harley-Davidsons. One day after the signing of the Armistice, Corporal Roy Holtz of Chippewa Falls, Wis., is the first American to enter Germany. He is riding a HarleyDavidson. “It’s a long way to the top if you wanna Rock ‘N Roll” sang Australian hard rock band AC/DC in 1975 and for sure it has been a long way for the legendary brand right until up now. But nobody can deny HD still rock hard! Starting in a wooden

shed, playing a major role in both World Wars, winning for several years all Dirt Track Races ever competed in the U.S., becoming a legend and a symbol for freedom. One hundred and ten years later they are still building rock solid roaring motorcycles; this is Harley-Davidson ladies and gentlemen. Free and though as only Harleys can be, it’s no surprise that Hollywood always has been fascinated by the legendary brand. The whole Film Industry and plenty of Directors couldn’t help but fall in love with these machines and often used them in their movies. Probably the most iconic one still remains Easy Rider starring Dennis Hopper, Peter Fonda and Jack Nicholson. Written in 1969 by Fonda, Hopper and Terry Southern, produced by Peter Fonda and directed by Dennis Hopper, Easy Rider tells the story of two bikers who travel through the American South-West. The motorcycles for the film were designed and custom built by two African-American chopper builders (Cliff Vaughs and Ben Hardy) following ideas of Peter Fonda in pure HD style mounting the famous V-twin engine. The opening scene of the movie became an instant classic, mainly thanks to the groundbreaking tunes that accompany the images. John Kay, vocalist of the LA based band Steppenwolf, sings Born To Be Wild. Since then this song has become a hymn for all Harley-Davidson riders (You can watch the opening scene of Easy Rider after the article ends). Celebrities, Rockers and Movie Stars throughout the years have loved to be portrayed on their Harleys, but it was in 1956 that something magic happened, finally The Legend met The King: Elvis Presley! The front cover of The Enthusiast (Harley’s own magazine) shows an image of the godfather of Rock ‘N Roll sitting on his bike. The King proved to love The Legend and we love them both. Years later a series of paintings portraying Elvis and a Harley have been produced by the first ever licensed oil painter for The Motor Company: David Uhl. Among his works, David Uhl also created the beautiful painting that celebrates HarleyDavidson’s 110th anniversary. (Enjoy some more of his works at page 136 of this issue) June 2013 saw the American company started to celebrate its 110th anniversary with a series of pan-global events marking the occasion. ropean one was a bit extra-special, though. Pope Francis is well known already for being a bit different from his predecessors. In a few months he completely revolutionized the way people see the Catholic Church. He’s such a tremendous charismatic figure, he’s so spontaneous, it might sound a bit disrespectful but The Pontiff is so down-toearth, he is one of us. Before celebrating the Services on Sunday 16th, Pope Francis blessed bikes and bikers from his pope mobile as Harleys lined Via della Conciliazione, the street from St. Peter’s Basilica to the Tiber River. The blessing concluded a weekend of events on the Rome leg of the Milwaukee-based motorcycle manufacturer’s celebration. Now several hundred Harley-Davidson motorcycle owners can add a papal blessing to their list of bragging rights about their Hog. The previous week, the motorcycle company presented the pope with two white motorcycles that will serve the Vatican Police and a black leather jacket with an eagle on the back. Mark-Hans Richer, senior vice president and chief marketing officer, said Harley-Davidson showed the pope the “freedom jacket,” which contains pieces of adventures from customers at every destination during the celebratory year. “Exactly at the point where the Pope touched the jacket, we will be adding a patch from one of the local chapters,” Richer said at a news conference. The patch, from the Roma chapter, was cut off a member’s jacket to become part of the freedom jacket. The four-day event, of which the Pope’s appearance was a memorable part, might have been a once-in-a-lifetime journey for some of the riders, who joined a throng riding from the port of Ostia under police escort through some of the most recognizable parts of Rome. The 2,000-year-old Coliseum bore witness to hundreds of thumping, thundering V-twin engines on the route as the parade passed brand displays, cheering fans and bemused but fascinated locals.

Pope Francis blessed in Rome this year thousands of Harley-Davidson motorcycles and riders

EASY RIDER The famous American road movie “Easy Rider” which was released in 1969, is the story of two bikers on a Harley Davidson, played by Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper, who travel through the American Southwest and South. The movie shows the rise and fall of the hippie movement, drug abuse and communal lifestyle which were the tensions in the United States during the 1960s. ound number five of season 2013 in MotoGP took place at the magnificent Mugello circuit. Sunny weather, a lot of fans, a spectacular track and the fastest riders in the world once again provided an amazing race in Italy! On Saturday Dani Pedrosa has claimed his first pole position of the campaign and took the lead at the beginning of the race on Sunday. But soon after, Repsol Honda’s rider made a mistake, run wide in the first corner and was overtaken by Jorge Lorenzo. The race started on a disastrous way for both Valentino Rossi and Alvaro Bautista. Home hero and Spaniard tangled in the mid-pack, which sent them to the gravel at the third corner. After the event, Race Direction declared this coming together as a ‘racing incident’. Good ride by Pedrosa kept Lorenzo under a huge pressure in the first part of the race. Dani had been trying few times to overtake his compatriot, but then he began to lose his pace. As Lorenzo raised his own game and quickly opened a three-second gap, the Repsol duo – Pedrosa and Marc Marquez - were fighting for position number two. With five laps remaining, the rookie overtook his teampartner, but only two laps later he threw away his chances for another podium, sliding off in Savelli curve. For the young Spaniard it was his fourth crash in three days and once again he luckily escaped 38

a serious injury! Jorge Lorenzo came home with a five seconds gap and has scored his third consecutive win in Italy. It was the first win for “Por Fuera since round one in Qatar. A crash from Marquez put title leader Pedrosa back in runner-up position, even if in the end of the race he faced pressure from Cal Crutchlow. The British rider was third and only one second behind Dani. Till the end, Andrea Dovizioso and Stefan Bradl were fighting for fourth place, with the German rider winning that battle! Aleix Espargaro scored his best result finishing in eight and once again the Spaniard was the fastest CRT rider.

fter three crashes in the first four races of the season 2013, Stefan Bradl hoped for a good weekend at Mugello circuit, as the Italian round is a home one for his LCR Honda MotoGP team. The track in Tuscany welcomed MotoGP’s riders with damp surface after heavy rain a couple of days ago before the Grand Prix. In FP1 session, the German rider set third fastest time, while tricky conditions in second practice made it more difficult to ride with fast rhythm and Stefan finished on Friday with eight place. Much better conditions on Saturday saw Bradl improving his lap times and being once again within the TOP3 riders. In combined classification of all three practices he was in fourth place, so he had to participate only in Q2. After #6 did third fastest time in final fourth practice, he was in a positive mood ahead of qualifying. LCR Honda MotoGP’s rider was again fighting with the fastest riders and achieved fifth place in Q2. Bradl did a strong start and had strong pace during the whole race. At the end he had to fight with Andrea Dovizioso for place number four – exactly the same duo was fighting last year at Mugello circuit for podium, also till the last meters of the race. But this time it was Stefan who won this battle! With a fourth place the German rider has repeated his best-ever finish in MotoGP. INSPIRE, JULY 2013 45

“Repeating the 4th place of last year is a very special feeling for me and the team. Actually i am happy about the job we have done throughout the whole weekend but the race was a bit tough” – said moto2 world champion. – “honestly i did not take a brilliant start losing some positions and after that i had to overtake the ducati guys. it was not easy to relegate them behind me and i knew that dovi would have tried to pass me in the last lap. he is a strong rider and i really enjoyed the battle with him. i must thank the whole team and our partners and fans for their excellent job and support because i know this a special race for lucio and his collaborators.”

unny Spain welcomed MotoGP riders for the sixth round of season 2013, with racing once again taking place at famous Catalunya circuit near Barcelona. This track is also well known of Formula 1 races and testing venue. Jorge Lorenzo was the favorite before the start of MotoGP race at Catalunya circuit, even if he had crashed in free practice and had to start from third spot of the grid. Actually, the Spaniard made a perfect start and took the lead in the first corner. Then he rode a spotless race, never made a single mistake and won his home Grand Prix by less than two seconds. For local hero “Por Fuera” it was his third triumph of the season and second in a row! But what’s more important, was the battle for the second place. Like two weeks earlier at Mugello circuit, also at the circuit near Barcelona it was a big battle between both Repsol Honda riders. On the last laps Marc Marquez started to attack his teammate Dani Pedrosa, while in the end 27-year-old #26 held a fearsome manoeuvre when both touched and almost crashed. Charging final lap by #93 Marc Marquez, he saw him right behind the tail of Pedrosa’s Honda at the end. Both, Valentino Rossi and Stefan Bradl, had a lonely race for fourth and fifth place consecutively. The Italian once again, like in his home race, had a clash with Alvaro Bautista on the first lap, 66

but this time “The Doctor” was able to continue, while the Spaniard crashed. He ruined his chances for a good result after he had qualified in fourth. Few high-profile contenders also crashed out - Cal Crutchlow was holding fourth place when he went out on lap six and Nicky Hayden crashed four laps later. Taking advantage of rivals’ crashes, Bradley Smith celebrated his best-ever result in MotoGP with a sixth place finish in Catalunya, while the best CRT rider was, for the sixth time in as many Grands Prix this year, Aleix Espargaro. Scoring on his debut in MotoGP was also Javier del Amor, who was substituted for injured Hiroshi Aoyama after the Japanese rider has broken his finger on Saturday.

efore the start of the free practices at famous catalunya circuit, Stefan bradl and other motoGp riders enjoyed a friendly soccer match at majestic camp nou Stadium in barcelona. The 23-year-old rider from munich proved his skills in football, scoring a goal for motoGp team (which played against moto2 and moto3 riders). Then, the opening day of Gran premi de catalunya took place in almost tropical weather, so it was very demanding for riders to ride. with aim to improve from his fourth place in mugello, lcR honda motoGp rider Stefan bradl finished the first day with ninth fastest time. Even if the German rider lost the front of his honda Rc213V and fell in la caixa corner in second free practice, he was unhurt. on Saturday morning, in Fp3 session the moto2 world champion improved his Friday’s time by 0.8sec and was seventh in combined classification of all three free practices. once again he had to participate only in Q2, and even if he made some progress with his team, he could not confirm his good shape in qualifying. Stefan had to start the race from tenth spot on the grid, but on the first lap he was up to seventh place. Through the whole 25-lap long race, the German had a good pace and wisely managed the life of the tyres. At the end he crossed the finish line in fifth place, scoring second consecutive position in top5. INSPIRE, JULY 2013 73

“honestly we thought it would have been tough to get such a good result so we are very happy about this p5. it has been a very tough race in these hot conditions and i had to be very clever to save the tyres in every single lap. Some riders crashed in the first part of the race so i decided to be less aggressive in the beginning” – said 23-year-old rider from munich after the sixth race of the season. – “i am quite satisfied about my performance because i was capable to adapt to these difficult conditions. This strategy gave me a lot of confidence and a big gap to the guys behind me.”

he Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este (Concours d’Elegance competition) is perhaps the most significant of all events celebrating the mystique of Historic Cars. It is undoubtedly the most traditional event and was held for the first time in the heyday of aristocratic cars in 1929. Since its revival in the 1990s the Concorso has improved year by year in every one of the benchmarks for these wonderful vehicles. The contest is epitomised by the beauty of the setting, the impeccable hospitality, efficient organisation, the programme at the Grand Hotel Villa d’Este and Villa Erba, an enthusiastic audience, the public awareness in the international press and TV, and above all the elegance, originality and the state of preservation of the valuable automobiles participating in the event. Visitors to the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este imbibe an air of authentic aristocracy infinitely superior to the commercial flair of other events. The focus on design, originality, perfect preservation and the spirit of nobility bring together the most important and beautiful cars from all over the world year by year in Cernobbio (lake of Como, Italy) – reflecting the true historical value of the automobile. The Grand Hotel Villa d’Este is one of the world’s leading hotels and the grounds on the shores of Lake Como offer guests and visitors the opportunity to admire some 50 Historic Cars built between the 1920s and the 1980s. The cars are organised in different categories and an exclusive panel of experts led by president Lorenzo Ramaciotti judges the cars to select the Best of Show prize, the BMW Group Trophy. Situated in Southeast Asia, cambodia is bordered by Thailand and laos on the north and Vietnam on the east and south. its total landmass is 181,035 square kilometres and lies entirely within the tropics. The country consists chiefly of a large alluvial plain ringed by mountains with the mekong River to the east. The plain is centred around the largest lake of cambodia, tonle Sap, which is a natural storage basin of the mekong. cambodia is one of the most populous countries in the world, with a population of over 14.8 million. The official religion is Theravada buddhism, which is practiced by approximately 95% of the cambodian population. phnom penh is the capital and largest city and the political, economic, and cultural centre of cambodia. The kingdom is a constitutional monarchy. The head of government is hun Sen, who is currently the longest serving leader in South East Asia and has ruled cambodia for over 25 years. cambodia’s ancient name is “kambuja”. in 802 Ad, Jayavarman ii declared himself king marking the beginning of the khmer Empire which flourished for over 600 years allowing successive kings to dominate much of Southeast Asia and accumulate immense power and wealth. The indianized kingdom built monumental temples such as Angkor wat and facilitated the spread of first hinduism, then buddhism to much of Southeast Asia. After the fall of Angkor to Ayutthaya in the 15th century, cambodia was ruled as a vassal between its neighbours until the French colonized it in the middle of the 19th century. cambodia gained independence in 1953. cambodia is a safe country to travel. however, caution is advisable in larger cities, especially later in the evening. when you come out of the pub in the evening, you should instruct the moped riders to use any dark side streets. cambodia remains one of the most heavily mined countries in the world. According the un, there are still 6 million mines in cambodia. The risk of being injured by a mine, is always there. The khmer are a tolerant and harmonious needy people that are anxious not to embarrassing or losing face. A lifting of the voice or temper tantrums can respect their audience dwindle and are considered inappropriate. This should be in mind of the tourist when communicating. Scolding will usually cause exactly the opposite of what you actually want and expect as a tourist.

Usually roads are so poor in Cambodia that in many provinces elephants are still a primary means to transport both people and goods. Elephant is a popular tourist attraction, but Cambodia’s elephant population is at critical point

cambodia’s incredible story makes for a variety of different sights to land, on water and in the city. phnom penh, one of the most beautiful French colonial cities in indochina, vibrant capital and more than just a starting point for further activities. Visiting the killing Fields best experiences the reality of the not very distant past of pol pot’s reign of terror and the “khmer Rouge”, the dark side of cambodia. This term is synonymous with the mass murder of the “khmer Rouge”. The total number of victims of the “khmer Rouge” is estimated at one to two million people. The most famous killing Fields is located at choeung Ek, near phnom penh. The no. 1 attraction in cambodia is Angkor wat and its most famous temples near the city of Seam Reap. The lar-

The temple was conquered by the jungle – ta prom - is a much photographed subject and the latest world-famous since lara croft. huge trees artfully meld with the old ruins of the temple complex. JAMES HUnT, THE 1970S BRITISH RACInG ICOn, LIVED MORE In HIS 45 YEARS THAn MAnY MAnAGE In 90. WITH ROn HOWARD’S nEW FILM, RUSH, FOCUSInG On THE 1976 On-TRACK BATTLE WITH RIVAL nIKI LAUDA, WE TAKE A LOOK AT THE DECADEnT AnD TRAGIC LIFE OF FORMULA OnE’S MOST COLOURFUL CHARACTER.

h

e was the wildest man in the history of Formula one racing. he looked more like a movie star than a race car driver. he slept with several thousand women and drank and drugged his way through life with the kind of élan that only Errol Flynn could match. he also became world F1 champion by finishing third in the final race of the 1976 season in a massive downpour that made the tokyo course so frighteningly dangerous to drive that it forced his rival – niki lauda – to withdraw after two laps. James hunt had the kind of lust for life that only a very few men can ever know. he was a golden god of

the race track who faced down death with a hearty disdain and would occasionally entice women into bed by saying, “this could be my last race.” but hunt rarely needed a line when it came to satisfying his massive sexual appetite. women flocked to him with the kind of frenzy more commonly reserved for rock stars. tall, blonde and irreverent, hunt was a carnal carnivore who blazed his way through life at maximum speed. he was always on the limit, as the saying goes amongst race car drivers, and indulged in sex, drugs and alcohol with reckless abandon. dead at 45 of a massive heart attack in 1993, hunt fled from earth

with the kind of suddenness that often takes heroes to their final resting place. better to burn out than fade away, as neil young would say. definitely. hunt’s life and his epic 1976 battle with niki lauda are the subject of a highly anticipated new film – Rush – directed by Ron howard. it’s the first feature film about Formula one racing since John Frankenheimer’s epic 1965 movie, Grand prix. Starring chris hemsworth as hunt and daniel bruhl (inglorious basterds, Goodbye lenin) as lauda, Rush will go a long way to adding to the legend of the wild Englishman. today’s F1 drivers have little in common with the generation of drivers from the 60s and 70s. it was an era where drivers regularly hurtled to their death in a grisly mash of twisted metal, severed limbs and crushed bodies. they were true gladiators whose chariots were akin to lightly armoured coffins that offered little protection in the event of a crash. hunt himself had to drag fellow race car driver Ronnie peterson out of his burning car when track marshals were too afraid to do so. (peterson later died in hospital as a result of medical negligence.) Jochen Rindt even won the 1970 championship posthumously after being killed prior to the end of that season. whereas hunt and the F1 drivers of his era entered each race with a very legitimate risk of dying, today’s cars offer near-perfect protection against paying the ultimate price for practicing one’s craft. brazil’s Ayrton Senna – generally acknowledged as the greatest F1 driver of all time, and who won the monaco Grand prix an astonishing five times in a row, six times overall – was the last man to die in a race when a carbon fibre suspension fragment pierced his helmet in 1994. Since then, there have been bad crashes and some serious injuries, but death is hardly the spectre it once was for men like hunt. hunt was a man whose sexuality was reflected not only in the way he drove a car but in the way he lived every moment away from the track. with two weeks to prepare for the final and deciding race of the 1976 season, hunt installed himself in the tokyo hilton hotel and proceeded to “entertain” a never-ending parade (estimated at nearly three dozen in total) of british 114

Airways stewardesses. hunt would relax on a sofa in the hotel lobby waiting for them to check in as part of their regular 24-hour stopovers at the hilton, and then invite them to join him for what he affectionately called “celebrations”. his playboy image preceded him, of course, and it was often said by women who knew him that his 6’1” frame, long blonde hair, chiselled good looks and natural charm were so completely disarming that it was almost impossible to refuse to go to bed with him even if they knew it was merely a one-night stand and that he had a steady stream of willing female sex partners lined up in the hotel room hallway outside. together with his friend barry Sheene, world motorcycle champion that year, hunt engaged in a “round-the-clock alcohol, cannabis and cocaine” binge (according to hunt biographer tom Rubython) while indulging in every manner of sexual pleasure with his adoring stewardess fans. Racing legend Stirling moss, who regularly partied with hunt in monte carlo whenever they met up, said: “if you looked like James hunt, what would you have done?” if ever a man marched to his own drumbeat, it was hunt. he would retire from racing at the relatively young age of 31 when he stepped out of his car at the monaco Grand prix after two disappointing seasons at mclaren and told reporters: “it isn’t worth racing when the best your car can do is 10th place.” he would go on to work as a race analyst alongside bbc broadcast legend murray walker for 11 years and was notorious for making highly critical comments about drivers and anything else that aroused his ire. hunt spoke his mind and would doubtless have been fired after one race were he to be commenting in today’s politically correct context. in June 1993, while staying at a house in St tropez, hunt died of a massive heart attack. but if any man deserved a quick death, it was certainly James hunt.

The epic actiondrama stars Chris Hemsworth as the charismatic Englishman James Hunt and Br端hl as the disciplined Austrian perfectionist Niki Lauda, whose clashes on the Grand Prix racetrack epitomized the contrast between these two extraordinary characters, a distinction reflected in their private lives. Set against the sexy and glamorous golden age of Formula 1 racing, Rush portrays the exhilarating true story of two of the greatest rivals the world has ever witnessed-handsome English playboy Hunt and his methodical, brilliant opponent, Lauda. otorcycle rounds in the Netherlands are always special, as Assen circuit is in the calendar from the beginning of Championships in 1949. The 65th edition of Dutch TT has proven to be action-packed, both on and off track and it was the Yamaha riders who stole the show that weekend. Firstly it was Jorge Lorenzo, when he crashed in the second free practice and broke his collarbone. With his team he made quick decisions – flight to Barcelona, surgery and coming back to Assen on Friday afternoon. Just 36 hours after doctors inserted a titanium plate and eight screws to his bone, he was declared fit to race! But the day earlier, the other Yamaha rider – Cal Crutchlow scored his first ever pole position in MotoGP, being faster in qualifying than Marc Marquez and Stefan Bradl. Right after the start Dani Pedrosa took the lead, ahead of his teampartner Marquez, Bradl and Valentino Rossi. Poleman Crutchlow was back to fifth, ahead of Bradley Smith and injured Lorenzo! But “The Doctor” had not been waiting too long to attack and after three manoeuvres he took the lead from Pedrosa in the final chicane of lap six. For a very long time, right behind him, were riding two Repsol Honda riders ahead of Lorenzo. Some laps later Valentino Rossi was able to open a gap and final120

ly he crossed the line as a winner! For the Italian it was his first victory since Malaysian GP in 2010 – it means he was waiting 46 rounds and exactly 993 days to stand once again on the top step of the podium. “I’m happy and I cannot believe it! I didn’t know if I could win again” – said Yamaha’s rider after scoring his 80th win in premier class. Till the end Marquez and Crutchlow were fighting for the second place, the duo almost touched at the beginning of the last lap. Marc came home second, ahead of the Englishman. Finally the fourth position went to Pedrosa and ‘Man of Steel’ Lorenzo crossed the finish line in fifth! The fastest CRT rider was Aleix Espargaro who scored position number eight.

n the final weekend of June, the motoGp contingent moved to the netherlands, where riders were fighting to win the seventh race of the season. like always, the first free practice at legendary Assen tt circuit took place on thursday morning. Stefan bradl set in the dry Fp1 seventh fastest time, while in the second session - affected by rain – he was fourth. the German rider spent that day testing new front suspension parts with hope to improve in the next sessions. on Saturday, 23-year-old #6 bradl earned a Q2 placing, being seventh in combined classification of times in free practices. Qualifying session at Assen circuit was frenetic, with many fast riders taking provisional pole position. the German rider registered 1’34.878 as his best time and for few seconds was the winner of Q2. At the end, he secured third place and first front row start for lcR honda motoGp team since Randy de puniet in 2009. with aim to continue his progression, bradl started his 25th race in motoGp from the first row. Good pace and no mistakes saw Stefan finishing in sixth position and gaining 10 points, even if he could not repeat his strong rhythm from Saturday. INSPIRE, JULY 2013 127

“honestly we are not completely happy because we were expecting a better result after our first front row. The sixth position is still okay but we missed something to catch the guys in the front. Actually we could not repeat yesterday’s lap times and i felt the bike was more heavy to turn and this cost us a lot of time in corner entries. Some riders passed me in the beginning on brake because i was not able to fix my braking point and i struggled to find my references. i was not able to put the things together and reduce the gap to the front. now we move to Argentina for a 2-day test session and then my home race at Sachsenring: i am really looking forward to race in front of my local fans” – said Stefan after the race in Assen.

Eyes wide open When you’re behind the wheel safety and your eyes efficiency are almost the same thing: there is no prevention or precaution that can save you from a poor sight. Be sure to take care of it and have it checked often! photo: Shutterstock

l

ights, colours, shapes and movements. The view that every driver has to “scan” meter by meter when driving is complicated and full of unexpected, overlapping and ambiguous events. Sometimes even hidden ones. yet safety starts from here: from your eyes. if they do their job well, you have many chances to avoid and prevent most accidents. but what does it mean a good sight? First things first. There are many premises to be considered: a good sight is not enough to guarantee safety if you

“A professional driver is more concentrated behind the wheel than the average of other people” lack the basic attention to driving conditions. For example, alcohol can tarnish the best sight of the world and certainly slows your reflexes and the speed of reaction at the wheel, exposing you to hazards and risks. The same can happen if your car is not in the best conditions: windshield, ventilation system, anti-fog lights, wipers and lights all in perfect order are preconditions for safe driving. not to mention common sense, which must never be lacking and that must prevent us from driving in bad weather conditions or from improperly using distracting accessories (mobile phones and navigators). So far for the premises. now let us talk about eyes: the first thing to do before getting behind the wheel is a complete and thorough eye examination. not everyone knows, or wants to admit, that the so-called “human error”, one of the main causes of road accidents, is often related to a sight problem: 50% of accidents depends on sight problems. yet even today the driving license examinations are often superficial and hasty and only our sense of responsibility can amend this situation. The good news is that in almost all European countries it is very easy to have your eyes checked through a public health service examination. Then, experts are thinking about introducing a European driving license which requires an eye examination with an

analysis of monocular and binocular visual field and with a test on colour blindness and other defects. The European Federation of optical industry would like the tests to be made by professionals and not by car agencies, making them mandatory every 5 and 10 years. All this is important but it means nothing without responsibility. For example: everyone should know that the amplitude of the field of view decreases as the speed increases. or: safety also depends on the respect of the safety distance, which is the sum of the space necessary for manoeuvring the vehicle and the distance travelled during the reaction time of the driver. The visual stimulus takes 0.7-1.3 seconds to reach the brain and be decoded, and this is the reaction time of a normal person and in full health in front of an obstacle. Then there are particular conditions: the weather or the light of the stretch of road you are traveling on, a sudden glare or a rapid change of light in our eyes require more time for our eyes to adapt and react. These precautions must be increased for people wearing glasses or contact lenses while driving: myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and other defects are no obstacle to driving provided they have been detected and corrected in the right way. All this, however, means nothing without the care, caution and concentration behind the wheel. it has been calculated

“The visual stimulus takes 0.7-1.3 seconds to reach the brain and be decoded” that a professional driver, even when driving on a public road, is more concentrated than the average of other people driving every day. A professional driver gets less distracted, is more focused on the road and does not look at the landscape or the road signs: does that mean we must all become professional drivers? obviously not, but a safe and sport driving course can help us to identify our shortcomings of sight, to do something to correct them, to avoid any distraction, to give more importance to attention and caution. Eyes wide open, folks!
