SUCCESS FOLLOWS STRATEGY The two keys to achieving success By: CONNIE LAUGHLIN
“Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible.” – Tony Robbins Talk about motivating! What’s going to happen when you hit the floor every morning with only one thing on your agenda, and you see that that’s how far you can move your company forward that day? If you’re ready to make it happen, the first thing on your to-do list should be to move mountains, if needed, to streamline your business. You are not productive when your mind is working on admin stuff throughout the year. For example, it’s more efficient to streamline your business by outsourcing things like payroll, benefits administration, claims management, human resources, bookkeeping, safety and other non-revenue-producing activities. By utilizing highly credentialed outsourcing service providers, you’re reorganizing your business affairs, with best practices in place. If you’re supervising employees doing payroll, benefits or risk management, no one is presently overseeing productivity – so quit it now!

I N S P I R E C O A S TA L B E N D M A G . C O M
YOU MUST BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND: IF YOU CAN ENVISION IT, IT’S THE KEY TO YOUR SUCCESS. “You were born to win, but to be a winner, you must plan to win, prepare to win and expect to win.” - Zig Ziglar Have a written strategic plan, and always refine your tactics. Staying committed to the process that leads to your success is paramount! Problems get in the way of revenue production. So be ready to deal with dysfunctional employees, lack of inventory turnover, industrial downturn, bad debt, faulty equipment or whatever your business hands you. The trials and tribulations that happen along the way will more than likely need your full attention. If you’ve streamlined administrative duties for you and your team, you’re now prepared to handle these issues. And you have all hands on deck! Much thought needs to be spent on strategies to deliver a positive workforce, superb customer service, marketing tactics and cash flow optimization, plus numerous decisions that
can impact your bottom line on a daily basis. Remember, you don’t know what you don’t know! So always seek professionals. “One reason so few of us achieve what we truly want is that we never direct our focus; we never concentrate our power.” – Tony Robbins Don’t drop the ball! Again, there’s no way to give 100 percent of your energy to achieving your goals if you’re still dealing with transactional human resources administrative activities inhouse. Outsource everything that takes your focus away from your key goals in growing your business. Keep your mind fixated on creating solutions that help drive production and increase profitability. The only way to not have regrets is to know you put forth your best efforts, promoted best practices and, all the while, laser focused on building a lucrative business.

BUILDING A LUCRATIVE and sustainable business requires a lot of planning and number crunching. The two keys to achieving success are commitment and motivation! Find your motivation by writing down the goals you wish to accomplish. Start with the end in mind. Know you can achieve it! In the book, “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People,” Stephen R. Covey emphasizes you must begin with the end in mind: If you can envision it, it’s the key to your success. How much profit do you want to make this year? This quarter? Write it all down. What areas need improvement to ensure goal attainment? Who can you lean on for mentorship?

OPULENT OPALS All about nature’s lucky little kaleidoscopes By: COLTON BARTEL Photos by: PAUL MARSHALL
N
eed a little luck in your life? How about a splash of color? But what if you’re not sure which color? Look no further: Opals are your answer. In the middle ages, opals were believed to be the luckiest stone you could ever dream of. Since opals can display every color of the spectrum, it was thought that they possessed the powers of every other stone known to man, making them very lucky. Unfortunately, they don’t have a really well-kept record of their luck, but they do show their colors well. Opals fall under a category known in the gemology world as phenomenal stones. No, they don’t actually possess any actual powers, float, predict the future or anything, but these stones aren’t just sitting down and doing nothing, either. Phenomenal stones are stones that do anything besides displaying a single color. Some examples would be color-change stones like Alexandrite or color-change Sapphire, which have the ability to change color in different light, or Star Sapphires and Rubies. These stones display a “star” on top and move with the light. Opal’s trick is what we call “play of color.” This means that though the main color of the stone is visible other colors, many other colors are often
also visible in or on the stone, and they change as lighting changes. Opals aren’t the only stones that have this ability to show multiple colors, but they are the most widely known. Without getting too technical, let’s talk a little about how opals work and what makes them valuable. OK, so most people don’t know this, but opals do contain a small amount of water, and this hydration not only helps with their ability to display multiple colors, but also contributes to how they form. The quick version is this: Opals are essentially made up of very fine spherical silica crystals that are stacked on top of each other. The water helps this process by carrying the materials to form the stone and then allowing the crys-
tals to “stack” on top of each other during solidification. This usually happens in layers, and it’s why really nice opals seem to have nearly infinite depth and colors. What causes the play of color is the light passing through these stacks, and each of the silica crystals acts like prisms breaking up light into spectral colors and reflecting the light back to the viewer similar to the way a rainbow does. Because natural opals are all formed slightly differently, the colors displayed are always different, making each and every stone as unique as a fingerprint. There are several different kinds of opals from several different places in the world, but to keep me from rambling on for days about them, let’s just look at the three most popular:
White opal is the most common type of precious opal you will see.
Obviously you are going to want to pick the one that you like the best, but just FYI: The bigger and the more centered the flashes of color are, the more expensive the stone. White opals are great for first opal purchases and for younger jewelry lovers, since cost is usually low. Crystal opals are not quite as widely found, and it is much more rare to see them for sale. Very rarely will crystal opals be found in chain stores or box stores due to the difficulty of finding consistent sizes and shapes. Because they are much more rare, these stones are usually cut in odd shapes and sizes based on the shape of the rough. Crystal opals will be translucent and usually show bigger and brighter flashes of color. Just like white opals, the bigger and brighter the flashes are, the more expensive the stone will be. The most expensive and desired type is black opal. Most of these stones come from Australia, as well as with a big price tag. Black opals will have a dark opaque background, and large and extremely bright flashes of
Most of the time, chain stores and box stores selling natural opal jewelry will be use white opal. These stones are obviously primarily white and show little spots or flashes of different colors known as “pin fire.” When shopping for white opal (or any other type of opal), look to make sure there are no visible cracks or “crazing” in the stone.
color, usually across the entire stone. If you are in the market for black opals, it is a good idea to sit down with your jeweler and get educated about them. If you would like to learn more about black opals, or any of the other types of opals, visit with your local gemologist or use the contact information below.

tarting a new business can be a daunting prospect, but the Better Business Bureau (BBB) is here to help with tips, resources and advice on navigating the complex process. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), small businesses employ about 56 million of the nation’s private workforce, and account for more than half of all U.S. sales. In the state of Texas, a total of 165,026 businesses were formed last year, an almost 5 percent increase from 2014, according to the Texas Secretary of State. In order to run a successful small business, you need to learn about your customers, your competitors and the economic conditions in your industry. The SBA offers data and information on businesses, including economic indicators, employment statistics and income and earnings of your customers and competitors.

T
he mystery deepens as the light darkens and the water chills in the Texas State Aquarium’s upcoming “Tentacles” exhibit! Visitors will have the opportunity to enter a fascinating underwater world full of color-changing cuttlefish, jaw-dropping jellies, cephalopods and one gripping giant Pacific octopus. In the darker depths of the ocean lurk many of these charismatic species that are characterized as being quick-change artists and expert hunters. “Tentacles” will take the place of our long-standing “Floating Phantoms” exhibit and expand upon the experiential wonder jellies provide visitors. Included in the exciting new space will be a nursery, which will allow visitors to watch the birth and growth cycles of egg casings and juvenile cephalopods and jellies. In addition to teaching visitors about the lifecycle of these creatures, the nursery is also a vehicle to convey the importance of sustainability, because this nursery allows the aquarium to maintain a sustainable jelly population. Another exciting aspect of “Tentacles” will be a jelly touch pool. All of the aquarium’s interactive touch exhibit areas are staffed with educators and interpreters, giving visitors of all ages a unique experience of safely touching and holding animals while learning more about them and their importance in our world’s oceans.
The specific species inhabiting “Tentacles” will include:
Blubber jellyfish Atlantic and Pacific sea nettles Cannonball jellyfish Moon jellyfish Upside-down jellyfish Chamber nautilus and flamboyant cuttlefish Giant Pacific octopus
Nautilus, cuttlefish and octopus all belong to the cephalopod family. Also known as marine mollusks, related to snails and slugs, these animals are found in the world’s ocean and
at all depths. They can be less than an inch to more than 50 feet in size, and they can range in appearance from being ghostly transparent to displaying a bright rainbow of vibrant colors. Bonding these animals together is a shared anatomy that includes a head and eyes, mantle and siphon, arms, tentacles, beak and radula. Besides the amazing animals “Tentacles” teaches about, the aquarium hopes visitors walk away with an important conservation message. Because the mission of the Texas State Aquarium is to engage people with animals, inspire appreciation for our seas and support wildlife conservation, the “Tentacles” exhibit aims to educate guests about an important environmental issue: marine debris and its harmful effects on coastal birds and marine animals such as dolphins and sea turtles. The aquarium’s sea turtles are incorporated into “Tentacles” for a very important reason: In order to make the takeaway conservation message more meaningful and impactful, “Tentacles” helps to show how sea turtles are very susceptible to ingestion and entanglement in plastic marine debris. A littered plastic bag can easily be mistaken by a sea turtle or other animals as a jellyfish, and can lead to harmful consequences for the animal. It is important that each person plays a part in making sure such an item never comes to be debris in the first place. The Texas State Aquarium’s gripping new exhibit, “Tentacles,” will descend upon Corpus Christi early this summer! The Texas State Aquarium is located at 2701 N. Shoreline Blvd. in Corpus Christi, Texas. For more information, call 361-881-1200, email mermaid@txstateaq.org or visit www.texasstateaquarium.org.

“IF I CAN’T CHANGE YOUR LIFE, I’M NOT DOING MUCH FOR YOU.” WORK ETHIC, LOVE OF COUNTRY AND THE AMERICAN DREAM
MATTRESS FIRM PRESIDENT AND FOUNDER JAMES PEREZ IS GROWING HIS COMPANY IN CORPUS CHRISTI, THE RIO GRANDE VALLEY AND LAREDO – AND IT’S SPREADING LIKE WILDFIRE! Perez’s team was recently given the national award of Franchise of the Year. Their Moore Plaza location in Corpus Christi was recognized as the No. 1 producer – a large achievement and compliment, given that there are 3,000 stores nationwide. Distributing three times the volume of an average Mattress Firm, this April will mark the opening of Perez’s 16th store. “I’m being a good steward of things that were passed down to me,” explains the Corpus Christi native, humbly. Referring to his employees as the true “rock stars,” he maintains that his success is a recipe of working in alignment with a greater force: God. Perez’s passion ignites as his company’s operating philosophy resides on giving back to his community and paying it forward through mentorship. “I’ve come to learn we all need each other,” he explains of his employee team-dynamic. “I won’t bring a person into the company that we can’t change their life. If I can’t change your life, I’m not doing much for you.” The Corpus Christi native thrives on fostering employee leadership and development.
“My father inspired me a long time ago for the love of sales,” Perez describes fondly. He credits his father, Art, as his guiding light. He recalls his father’s support in opening his first store, sharing Art’s words from years prior: “Son, there is not one single thing that happens on this earth until a sale is made.” Growing up near Corpus Christi refineries, Perez had big dreams and understood early on the fortitude to bring those dreams to a reality. In 1997, at age 29, Perez worked diligently, as the odds were against him opening his first store. With no line of credit, no capital and no previous experience with Mattress Firm or a large retailer, he pushed forward boldly with the support of his father.
“I must have been told, ‘No,’ 20 times,” explains Perez, initially approaching Mattress Firm to open up a location in Corpus Christi. Today, the Mattress Firm franchise is recognized on every corner, yet at the time, the company was just kicking off. Their brand awareness was regional, with only 25 locations in Houston. “They didn’t have a national presence,” Perez describes of the company in the late ‘90s. “They weren’t even on the New York Stock Exchange.” Yet, with some corporate convincing and negotiation, Art demonstrated his faith in his son’s ability by gifting him his own storefront, Arts Market Place, so his son could build his dream. “When he gave up his identity for me, he had best friends who

said he was crazy,” recalls Perez of the risk involved. Although it was all their family had, the leap of faith paved the way for the first store. It was a success with the second location to follow shortly after. A large part of Perez’s success was, as he describes it, “staying on the positive side of habits. I’ve had the chance to use Mattress Firm as the testing ground – and what a testing ground!” Herding the flock, he demonstrates to his employees about financial responsibility. He uses hands-on approaches, teaching them how to be financially driven and successful. “Some employees didn’t know what their credit score was,” Perez explains. The rewards are fruitful. “Seeing a single mom buying a house – that’s the American Dream.”
PEREZ’S LAWS OF SUCCESS “We run our company spiritually; God gives us more to be in charge of,” explains Perez of financial success. Following this formula, Perez has seen his business success grow exponentially. “The power of these simple truths is actually a law. Throughout these 19 years, I realized how powerful these laws are,” Perez explains. These laws include the corporate social responsibility of giving back, and “paying it forward” to his employees and community.
GIVE-GIVE TRANSACTIONS “It’s a deal; in order for it to be good so both parties benefit, it’s two people becoming friends because of that transaction.” Authenticity seals the deal. Perez references old classic tactics that give salespeople a bad reputation. “The ol’ bait and switch – we don’t use it.”
LITTLE THINGS = THE BIG THINGS “It’s always going to be about the little things,” says Perez when describing the small “booties” his staff wears over their shoes when delivering a mattress into a customer’s home. Simple thoughtful approaches speak volumes for their customer care.
CARPE DIEM Being an opportunist and seizing the moment has worked in Perez’s favor. “When staring opportunity face to face – we call it the moment of truth – acting upon it. If you let your brain talk you out of it, it won’t help you. When you get in that moment, pull the trigger.”
COMMUNITY “Simple principles of being a part of a community mean something,” Perez says. “We run our business similar to a nonprofit. The giving has grown. As your business grows, the giving has to grow, too.” Their success has allowed the company to help support organizations such as Foster Angels of South Texas and the South Texas Women’s Shelter, among others. At Christmas time, the Corpus Christi Mattress Firm donates mattresses to those in need of a warm bed. “Some kids actually sleep on wood pallets,”
describes Perez of low-income homes. “We go around and donate mattresses to put beds in those homes. Every year, it gets bigger and bigger.”
MENTORSHIP Among Perez’s practicing values, he promotes his employees to success by principles of heart. “I’ve really enjoyed being a business owner. But more importantly, I’ve been able to mentor, helping my employees grow and be a part of that American dream.” Yet, Perez has learned that mentorship comes with listening and providing guidance leaving one’s comfort zone. “Let me be in the backseat; I’ll be the captain. But don’t worry, I’m going to push you out when I need,” he laughs. Today, Perez Family Mattress Firm employs 63 associates throughout South Texas, with three distribution centers: Corpus Christi, the Valley and Laredo. Truly a family affair, Perez is heavily supported by vice president and wife, Karen Perez, who oversees business infrastructure for all stores. “That’s the beauty of family-owned businesses,” Perez says. “It’s the backbone of America.” Perez’s mother, Mary Helen Perez, is CFO, accompanied by his daughter, Finance Director Aubrey Perez Garza. His son, Austin Perez, is their
“WE RUN OUR COMPANY SPIRITUALLY.” local spokesperson who is involved in the store’s participation in local health events, including the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk and Fit Fest. Perez’s “rock star” employees are guided by his leadership, with generational business sense and wisdom passed down. “Women are strong in our company – lead-her-ship!” says Perez enthusiastically. “We truly mentor; it comes from way back. I’m a product of Corpus Christi.” Reflecting endearingly on his father, who passed away in fall 2015, he concludes, “I promised him I would keep his name and legacy alive.” Perez continues to keep that spirit and knowledge alive through his dedicated mentorship and foundational principles. “I’ve been asked what I would miss if I retired,” Perez says. “What I would miss is the amazing things we have created and contributed to— kids and education.” Supporting Education is Our Freedom, the GED program, helps students to be successful in the next phase of their life. Perez has no plans of retirement any time soon, and he is going stick around for a while. “I’m going to do this as long as I can, until I can’t do it anymore.”

Located on premier beachfront property in Port Aransas, Port Royal Ocean Resort draws guests from across Texas and beyond to come, relax and discover the Coastal Bend Bay area.
The resort, built in 1985, has historical value, houses memories from years of returning families and offers fresh, new experiences for South Texas newcomers. Offering full-service resort amenities, as well as wedding and meeting planners onsite, Port Royal covers a variety of needs for their guests. “We have a total resort experience,” describes Concierge Jeanie Goff. “It’s very stylish.” As the hotel is located across the Corpus Christi Bay and on the Gulf of Mexico, only 30 minutes from downtown, attractions such as the USS Lexington Museum and the Texas State Aquarium are some of the popular goto spots for Port Royal guests. In 2013, the venue underwent a $4.1 million pool renovation while also updating décor, tile and carpet to keep up with the booming Port Aransas area. “The views are just beautiful,” Goff says. Port Royal Ocean Resort contains 210 condominium suites, which range from 700 to 1,700 square feet with full kitchens, laundries and one, two and three bedrooms. Some suites have residents fulltime, and many are homes to guests throughout the year, including “winter Texans,” Goff explains enthusiastically. Goff’s smile shines through her words as she describes life at Port Royal Ocean Resort. “Our busy season begins just before Easter,” she says about the spring break rush. A true “people person,” Goff enjoys getting to know guests and guiding them toward memorable experiences. The resort aims to provide a luxury home-away-from-home feel for guests. “It’s very rewarding, and guests appreciate it,” Goff says. “We enjoy seeing them as much as they enjoy coming to see us.” Having the opportunity to work in a state of paradise, Goff says she and her team members “love coming to work.” In her role as concierge, Goff maintains the flow of the resort by welcoming guests who enter the main lobby and offering suggestions about the nearby attractions with a personal touch. “It helps to have someone direct traffic,” she says. “I’m here to direct them to where they would like to go, and I learn what they’d like to do and guide them in the right direction.”
Dining
“We have a lovely dining area in our restaurant that has a wonderful view of the gulf and the largest resort pool in Texas,” Goff explains. Their local onsite restaurant, Restaurant 361, is a popular hangout for guests. “The food is out-

standing! People can come and dine with us, order food to go and enjoy by the pool or order room service.” Port Royal also offers other food options such as The Bistro in the lobby, known for their great pizzas and sandwiches, and the swimup Cabana Bar & Cabana Grill located in the pool area where guests can pick up a cold beverage and great eats and treats. “We have a full bar at the Cabana Bar – you can swim in the water and pick up a cocktail. People always love that”
Attractions
Accommodating family and adult activities, Port Royal offers a variety of activities for their guests. Available each week, Port Royal offers sandcastle lessons for the kids beachside, as well as yoga classes and dive-in movies – free for guests each week. With the proximity to Port Aransas and access to fishing vessels and open water charters, guests can enjoy their visit with deep sea fishing, as well as other fun activities including parasailing, airplane rides and even skydiving. Goff adds that guests can also opt for horseback riding on the beach, and that “there is also a very popular golf course about 10
month, and their onsite meeting planners can help orchestrate the event on the premier beachfront property. While offering large meeting and indoor banquet rooms, the resort organizes meal options for guests, as well as music accommodations. While also hosting events, Goff stays all day, taking care of the wedding party. “That’s one of the perks of the job,” she says. “We are such a large property; it is very easy to have several events going on at one time.” The resort also accommodates anniversaries, family reunions and conventions and business meetings. “Whatever the occasion is,” Goff says, “we can make it work!”
minutes away.” Another more recent attraction for guests is the new gambling cruise ship, the Aransas Queen Casino. Last fall, the cruise line started offer gambling when they cruise from the mainland. The Coastal Bend continues to expand entertainment opportunities for its vacationers, and Port Royal Ocean Resort stays on top of it all to ensure guests have the stay of a lifetime.
Weddings and events
“We have a wonderful wedding and meeting planning staff,” Goff says. Port Royal hosts many of these events each

LIVING IN THE COASTAL BEND comes with it the joys of sea air, sun and palm trees. Yet with the island lifestyle comes the necessary insurable investments such as boats, home insurance, motorcycle and vehicle insurance. “You have to protect your assets,” explains Gary Moore, V.P. of Moore Insurance Agency. “When we are shopping, we are shopping for the best value. We want to make sure we are not sacrificing [quality] for the lowest rate.” In a geographic location like Corpus Christi, there are types of insurance specific to the region such as policies covering severe weather damage like hurricanes and tsunamis. “When Hurricane Ike came through, we didn’t have any issues with any claims – that’s very good,” explains Moore of the many Houston claims that took place at the time. In 2007, the organization segmented away from its beginnings with Family Auto Insurance, offering personal lines, yacht policies and commercial properties. Now, with nine locations throughout Texas, the team is focusing on customers in the Coastal Bend. In an industry that has loopholes and fine print, and that can fall short of ethical care, Moore and his staff work to educate and protect their customers. “Many times, we will see a customer who will think they are covered, and they end up having a policy that is stripped down – and it could be disastrous for them. You want to protect your assets. There is a risk management aspect to this; it’s not trying to sell something. If they don’t understand what they are buying, they probably are not dealing with the right person.” Considering worst-case scenarios, the company thrives on educating customers toward policies that will secure their assets. Helping customers understand what they are actually purchasing has provided Moore Insurance Agency with a strong reputation in the Corpus Christi area, growing through referrals. One niche the agency has been able to serve includes customers who are dealing with the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA). “You don’t have go through TWIA – that has been a big deal down in South Texas.” As TWIA has been an alternative, policies through Moore Insurance can offer the same coverage at a significantly less amount of money (varying from 30 to 40 percent savings for some customers). The company can help assess customers if they qualify, which is an addition to their ad-value. Maintaining a retention rate between 92 to 96 percent, Moore Insurance Agency maintains an outstanding return ratio of clients. “Believe me, if it falls below 92 percent, I know about it,” say Moore, who supports that the firm’s
34
I N S P I R E C O A S TA L B E N D M A G . C O M
“track record” is why so many customers turn to the company to help increase protection of their assets. Focusing on 30 percent of the commercial industry, the company offers premier plans for midsize businesses. “We take the strategy to treat the smaller accounts as other larger competitors would treat their larger accounts,” Moore explains. “It’s been a good recipe for success.” Formerly a Naval Information Systems technician, Moore served our country abroad before joining the family business. Leading up to his role as V.P., he gained ex-
perience in commercial sales at Swantner & Gordon. Moore’s father purchased the agency in 2004, and worked as an Allstate agent for more than 30 years. The relationship with a company holding strong policies would become very beneficial for Moore’s portfolio as an independent insurance agency. This provided the company with a competitive advantage. “We offer a wider array of change to companies that captive competitors do not,” Moore describes. “We have the ability to move them to another company that we have a contract with and maintain that client as a customer.”
The agency works hard to help customers understand what they are actually purchasing. A fan of classic cars and motorcycles, Moore continues to have fun on the job. Insuring private vehicle collectors, he looks forward to helping preserve his customers’ prides and joys. “I love what I do, but when I am talking with someone about their classic car or motorcycle, it just takes it to a whole new level for me!” Moore says. Future developments are on the horizon for Moore Insurance Agency. “We would like to eventually acquire agencies in the Valley,” Moore explains. “I’m not sure when, but that is the direction I would like to go.”

DON’T WAIT! Why you need to train your employees in cybersecurity ASAP By: JOHN MARTINEZ

tise and experience to run a department, a branch of your company or the entire overseas division, he or she is still susceptible to cybercrime. Statistics show that top management officials are targeted more often because of their access to sensitive information. Far too often, the IT department will bend the rules for executives. Management is often required to travel, and they may use non-encrypted free Wi-Fi at hotels. The IT department can also be vulnerable if it is lax about keeping tight control of security.
THE WEAKEST LINK
Technology has advanced, but the weakest-link scenario still holds true in today’s world of cyber threats. A company’s infrastructure is only one careless employee away from being vulnerable to the hackers of the world. Engage IT in helping prepare a sophisticated policy covering all pos-

early every week, the news announces the latest damage caused by hackers. Nefarious cybercriminals are busy writing code for the sole purpose of stealing sensitive client information and critical financial data. Businesses need to be concerned; however, there are also dangerous factors working inside your organization that assist the cyber thief. The ignorance and negligence of one or more employees can leave the electronic door unlocked and allow a cybercriminal entrance into your most sensitive files. It’s important that employees understand the impact a cybercriminal can have on the organization, its clients and its employees. It hurts a business significantly when the news of a cyber theft reaches the general public. Clients and customers want to know their personal data is safe. The personal information of employees is equally vulnerable, and they must understand that. It is not sufficient to write out a cybersecurity policy and have employees read and sign it. Businesses need to have meetings where employees are trained in the policy and their obligations.

ater. The liquid that covers about 70 percent of the earth’s surface can be both life-sustaining and utterly destructive. Floods damage more homes than any other natural disaster, resulting in more than $2 billion in property damage each year. You may not be able to deter an oncoming flood, but it is important that you know about the dangers associated with these devastating natural occurrences and how your personal insurance policy can cover you in the case of an emergency. According to FloodSmart.gov, all 50 states have experienced floods or flash floods in the last five years, which means you could be at risk whether you live near a body of water or not. Those who have a federally backed mortgage and live in a Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA) are required to have some sort of flood insurance. Just a couple of inches of floodwater can cause tens of thousands of dollars in damages. So while flood insurance is affordable, significant flood damage is not, which is why it’s imperative that individuals in

high-risk areas purchase flood insurance, especially since damage caused by floods is not typically covered by homeowner’s insurance. Along with the bloom of fresh wildflowers and the birth of a new generation of wildlife, the onset of the spring means the start of rainy season. And in a year that will see an uncharacteristically significant increase in rainfall due to El Niño, it’s vital you understand some ways to help reduce flood damage and the importance of a flood insurance program. Here are some preventative measures one should consider to avoid substantial flood damage. The first precaution to take into consideration is protecting any critical electrical appliances. Things like washing machines and dryers, oil tanks, furnaces, exposed electrical wiring and especially water heaters should be raised on concrete blocks, or at the least anchored and protected by a floodwall. Storing irreplaceable family belongings such as pictures and important documents somewhere safe and out of reach from possible floodwater is another smart precautionary move. Another effective strategy for mitigating the possible damage
FLOODS DAMAGE MORE HOMES THAN ANY OTHER NATURAL DISASTER.
from a flood is to landscape your yard with plants that help resist soil erosion. Sometimes, even when one takes precautionary measures into account, floods can still threaten your property, which is why having a coverage plan in place is so imperative. A flood insurance policy is calculated based on the value of your home minus the value of your land or property. Carlisle Insurance’s residential flood insurance policies cover up to $250,000 in property damage with the option to add an additional $100,000 in coverage for the contents in your home. If necessary, extended insurance is available for coverage above these limits. When considering flood insurance, it is critical to take into account the 30-day waiting period in effect before the coverage policy takes place. Therefore, the optimal strategy to protect your home is to act now and invest in flood insurance as soon as possible. Do not wait until it is too late to make sure your finances, furnishings and family are protected before the flooding occurs.

WHAT’S UNDER YOUR FLOORING? Foundation and flooring tips for your Coastal Bend house or business
D
id you know that if the foundation underneath your building isn’t properly suited for the soil, sooner or later, you will experience some kind of foundation problem? A foundation distributes the weight of the house to the soil that is located under the foundation. The reason so many foundations fail in Corpus Christi is the soil that is located under the foundation is not stable. Continually changing conditions of the soils around your home can cause the following foundation problems: Seasonal changes – The expansion and contraction of the soil over time can weaken the support for your foundation and cause it to settle and crack. Expansive clay soils – The more expansive the soil around your home, the more your foundation may be prone to move. Poor drainage – Standing water around your home, large amounts of water dumped by gutter downspouts or a negative slope of the area around your home can cause saturated soil. Under-slab plumbing leaks – Excessive moisture in one area under your foundation can cause that area to heave upward or disturb the stability of your slab. Trees and tree roots – A large tree may drink more than 300 gallons of

water from the soil each day through its roots. Roots near or under the foundation may cause the soil to shrink, causing one part of the foundation to move more than others.
WARNING SIGNS OF FOUNDATION ISSUES
DETECTING A PROBLEM EARLY AND TAKING ACTION TO REPAIR IT IS THE BEST WAY TO SECURE YOUR PROPERTY.
Detecting a problem early and taking action to repair it is the best way to secure your property. Treating the cosmetic symptoms to save money covers up the problem and leads to more damage and expense, as the problem gets worse over time. To help you determine if your home or business may need foundation repair, here are top 10 signs of foundation problems: 1. Cracks in brick: Stair-step cracks in brick mortar are the most common sign in slab and pier and beam houses. The mortar is the weakest link in the chain, and it will usually break before brick; however, brick can also break due to the stress.

By: SYLVIA SLEZAK
2. Separation of fascia boards: The wood trim around the top of the brick will pull apart since the brick often rotates out from the top. A sure sign of movement is if large gaps develop in these trim boards at the corners of a house.
THE INSURANCE EXPERTS IN THE TEXAS GULF COAST
3. Sticking doors: Both interior and exterior doors can stick if the foundation has settled. Since settlement causes the frames of doors to be out of square, the door itself will stick in the frame or swing open by itself. 4. Sheetrock cracks: Sheetrock is soft and will crack sooner than most other parts of your house. Diagonal cracks above doors and window frames are one of the most common signs of settlement. 5. Sticking windows: Windows will often be hard to open and close due to distortion of the frame caused by settlement. 6. Sloping or uneven floors: If a piece of furniture appears to be leaning, it is probably because of foundation settlement. 7. Squeaky floors: Floors that squeak or shake on pier and beam and frame structures often mean that you have a foundation problem. 8. Soft spots in flooring: This may be an indication of rotted lumber under the structure caused by water or insect damage. 9. Wrinkles or tears in walls: Wrinkled wallpaper or tears on wall texture and ceilings are also signs of foundation settlement. 10. Cracks in floor tile: Ceramic floor tile, being a rigid material, will often crack if the foundation moves. Don’t wait until you start to feel your flooring move under your feet. BENEFITS FOR BUYERS Homeownership: more than just the American dream By: CORAL DWORACZYK
cision when initially purchasing the property, decide to sell the property shortly after buying or do not maintain the property, they can also lose equity in their investment.
CAN OWNING A HOME SAVE ME MONEY ON MY TAXES?
WHAT DO YOU GET FOR THE MONEY?
Many advocates of ownership argue that owning is actually less expensive than leasing – and in many cases, this is true! Some sources tell us that it’s “30 percent cheaper on a monthly basis to buy versus rent.” It’s hard to see this percentage as an honorable statistic, but when you compare actual dollar figures, the financial impact becomes more apparent. I see so many people in our community paying $1,000 to 1,500 per month (not including bills) for a small one- or two-bedroom apart-
ment. This same payment could afford a qualified buyer a home in the $100,000 to 160,000 price range, and we have a decent selection of those in our active market. Instead of paying off your landlord’s property, pay off your own!
WHAT IS EQUITY?
When individuals buy their home, they are making a long-term investment in their financial future. Equity is casually defined as the amount of money you could sell your home (or property) for, minus what is owed on the mortgage. Instead of paying a landlord hard-earned money that is basically a loss for the tenant, homeowners are able to gain equity in their properties and potentially recoup their expense and make a profit upon the sale of the home in the future. To earn equity more quickly, buyers may utilize a large down payment, improve their property with updates and upgrades and take advantage of the inflation that occurs over the years of ownership. However, if buyers make a poor de-
ACCORDING TO SOME SOURCES, IT’S 30 PERCENT CHEAPER ON A MONTHLY BASIS TO BUY THAN IT IS TO RENT.
However, there are exceptions, and there are some instances where it may be best to wait before buying a home. If you are in a situation where you may need to move often (more than every two to three years) or with short-notice, it may be best to wait before buying. Other factors like job instability, credit challenges or the need for greater flexibility and less responsibility may all be strong considerations to wait before purchasing. Always consult your trusted advisors and real estate professionals to help you determine if you are ready to buy a home.

n my profession, I see people struggle almost daily with making the ultimate leap to buy a home, especially in the case of first-time homebuyers. Other than fulfilling what so many consider the ultimate American dream, homeownership has many other advantages and may actually save a buyer quite a bit of money in the long run.
There are several tax advantages to owning a home. These advantages come in the form of tax deductions reserved for homeowners. The annual property taxes for an owner’s actual residence is fully deductible, potentially saving the taxpayer a considerable amount of taxes paid each year! And buyers can deduct their mortgage interest from their annual tax obligations, too. This is also a huge advantage, considering that the monthly mortgage payment is primarily interest for the first several years of a buyer’s repayment term. Additionally, any prepaid interest or “points” paid at closing is deductible. Please make sure to always consult your own tax specialist for the most up-to-date information and rules regarding tax deductions for homeowners.

Sweet summer fun Take advantage of the blueberry season by whipping up some blueberry mini-donut muffins. By: MANDY ASHCRAFT Phots by: DUSTIN ASHCRAFT
WHEN BLUEBERRIES are in season, it’s hard to resist buying several cartons of them at a time! They’re so sweet and delicious in the summertime. Here’s a fun way to utilize some of your extra berries in donut-shaped mini-muffins. You can find mini-donut pans at most stores. (This recipe makes 3 dozen.) Ingredients: 1 cup fresh blueberries 1/2 cup sugar, plus 1 tablespoon 1 1/4 cup flour 1 1/4 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 egg 2 tablespoons melted butter 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1/2 cup buttermilk 3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract Topping: Zest of 1 lemon 1/4 cup sugar Instructions: 1. In a small bowl, combine sugar for topping with lemon zest. Mix well and set aside. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Grease mini donut pan. Set aside. 2. To a small pan over medium heat, add blueberries and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Allow berries to heat until they pop and start to bubble, stirring and smashing them. You’re trying to make a thick sauce (a compote). When you can stir it up smoothly, remove from heat and set aside. 3. Add 1/2 cup sugar and egg to a large bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer. Whisk to combine. Whisk in melted butter and vegetable oil, followed by buttermilk and vanilla extract. 4. In a separate bowl, sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Slowly add to liquid mixture until just combined. 5. Add batter to the donut pan, filling each one half-full. You can easily do this by pouring your batter into a Ziploc bag and snipping off the very corner. (You will end up with about 3 dozen mini-donuts, so if you just have one pan, you’ll do this 3 separate times.) 6. Using a small spoon, add small amounts of blueberry compote to the top of each mini-donut, using a toothpick to swirl it through. Don’t add the blueberry mixture to the pan before the batter; they won’t keep their donut shape after cooking.

MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE
Some fun facts and interesting stats about our very own Corpus Christi International Airport By: KIM BRIDGER-HUNT
I
have an office with a view. I can say that because through my office window, I get to watch airplanes. I consider it a perk. Commercial airplanes come and go all day. There is an active general aviation community at Corpus Christi International Airport (CCIA) with everything from corporate aircrafts to small, single-engine planes maneuvering around the runways and taxiways at all hours of the day and night. And then there’s the military. Glancing out my window, I see T-6s as they taxi in for fuel. Did you know that CCIA supports the U.S. Navy’s mission in South Texas by serving as an alternate runway for Navy flight training? This partnership is a great source of pride for all of us who work at the airport. And since the airport is owned and operated by the City of Corpus Christi, it can be a source of pride for everyone who lives in our community if they know about it. So what else is there about CCIA that you may not know?
CCIA AIR TRAVEL FACTS AND FIGURES:
CCIA is served by three major airlines: American, Southwest and United. Twenty-five percent of our commercial passengers are flying to Houston or Dallas as their final destination. After Houston and Dallas, the most popular destinations out of CCIA are Las Vegas, New Orleans, Denver, Los Angeles and Orlando (in that order). Since we’re talking about where we fly, how about some stats on airfare? According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, these are the average one-way fares paid for travel out of CCIA, San Antonio and the United States as a whole for the past five years:

More facts and figures: CCIA has a Federal Inspection Services (FIS) area for clearing international flights through Customs and Border Protection (CBP). CCIA is designated a Port of Entry for aliens (foreign-born visitors) arriving by aircraft. CCIA sits on 2,700 acres of land, some of which is available for development. The airport is home to: • FedEx Ground • National Weather Service • Carr’s Delivery • Del Mar College Aviation Maintenance Program
CCIA is the future home of the U.S. Coast Guard, sector headquarters. The longest of the two runways at CCIA is 8,500 feet long, which is 1.6 miles. There are approximately 80,000 operations (landings and take-offs) at CCIA each year; 60 percent of them are conducted by the military. The Department of Aviation within the City of Corpus Christi is an Enterprise Fund, which means that the airport generates the revenue needed to operate.
There is more going on at CCIA than meets the eye. But nothing trumps our commitment to safe, secure air travel for visitors and customers in the Coastal Bend. As you begin to plan your summer vacations, please remember that CCIA is convenient, close to home and a comfortable alternative to long drives, long treks and long lines at other airports. Fly CCIA! Go to a happy place. Kim Bridger-Hunt is the marketing manager at the Corpus Christi International Airport. For more information, you may contact her at kimb@cctexas.com.

Approximately 700,000 people fly in and out of CCIA on commercial airplanes each year.

POSITIVE MESSAGE; CONTAGIOUS ENERGY The Got Faith Music Festival brings a variety of artists to the American Bank Center Arena on April 29. By: KRISTEN BILY
T
he Got Faith Music Festival comes to the American Bank Center Arena on April 29, and what many people do not know is that while hip hop and rock music are continuing to fill up arenas, so is the contemporary Christian music scene. The positive message and contagious energy in a show like this are like no other, and the lineup for this April 29 show is pretty spectacular. Newsboys has been a favorite for more than two decades. Newsboys’ live performances continue to sell out venues across the country, and the band has sold more than eight million units, amassing eight Gold certifications, 33 No. 1 radio hits, four GRAMMY nominations, two American Music Award nominations and multiple Dove Awards. One song in particular called “God’s Not Dead” is a chart topping, Platinum-certified single, and it inspired Pure Flix’s 2014 hit film of the same name. Newsboys returned to the big screen on April 1, 2016 for the highly anticipated Pure Flix release, “God’s Not Dead 2.” Also, the iconic group will showcase hits from their unparalleled career and forthcoming new studio recording. Tenth Avenue North made their national debut in 2008 on Reunion Records with “Over and Underneath,” which spawned the hits “Love is Here,” “By Your Side” and “Hold My Heart.” Tenth Avenue North took home the Gospel Music Association Dove Award in 2009 for New Artist of the Year, and in 2010, “By Your Side” was named Song of the Year. The band gained further momentum with 2010’s “The Light Meets the Dark” and “The Struggle” in 2012, which continued to populate the radio and the church with such memorable songs as “Healing Begins,” “You Are More,” Losing” and “Worn.” The Dove Award-winning band’s fourth studio album, titled “Cathedrals,” is a collection of well-crafted songs that inspire communi-

ty, encourage accountability and celebrate the fact we are not alone. Hawk Nelson is a powerhouse pop rock band that has won the hearts of thousands since their debut release in 2004. Hawk Nelson has released seven studio projects (“Letters to the President,” “Smile It’s the End of the World,” “Hawk Nelson is My Friend,” “Live Life Loud,” “Crazy Love,” “Made” and “Diamonds”). Hawk Nelson continues to celebrate their newest release, “Diamonds,” which has produced their No. 1 radio single with “Drops in the Ocean.” The debut

I am they has roots as a worship team based out of a community of various area churches. The band’s six-piece sound is propelled by versatile musicianship and anchored by three-part vocal harmonies. Through a unique series of events, including opening for a few CCM acts, as well as winning a band competition at Spirit West Coast, I Am They gained attention within the industry, culminating in a major label/publishing deal with Provident Label Group.
Audio Adrenaline has been one of Christian music’s best-loved bands. They have garnered two GRAMMY Awards for Best Rock Gospel Album (“Worldwide” and “Until My Heart Caves In”); five GMA Dove Awards; a Gold-certified recording (“Bloom”); and 14 No. 1 Christian radio singles, including signature songs “Big House,” “Get Down,” “Kings and Queens” and “Hands And Feet.” Ryan Stevenson’s full-length debut, “Fresh Start,” was released to critical acclaim in September and includes the multi-week No. 1 “Not Forgotten” (feat. TobyMac), as well as the recent hit “All Yours.” He was also nominated for a 2014 GRAMMY Award as co-writer of TobyMac’s hit single, “Speak Life.” OBB consists of brothers Zach, Jacob and Nich, who came into the spotlight in 2013 with a GMA Dove Award nomination. Signed by Curb Records in 2012 after gaining national notoriety on CBS Early Show’s “Singing Family Face-Off,” OBB’s full-length debut, “Bright Side,” which was released last year, features the No. 1 hit title-cut and the current Top 10 single, “Up Close And Personal.” Kairy Marquez is a bilingual worship leader, songwriter and speaker. She wrote her hit single, “Rey de Poder,” back in 2014, and she has been recognized as one of the voices with a future in inspirational Christian music by the Rome Reports. Tickets are available at the American Bank Center Box Office, all Ticketmaster outlets including select H-E-B and Walmart locations, Ticketmaster.com or by phone at 1-800-745-3000. Why I love doing what I do: Nurse practitioners have a variety of areas of specialization. This is part of what makes my profession so rewarding. My health care practice treats a variety of patients ranging from preventative care and health maintenance to treating the sick in their time of need and physical pain. It also encompasses a different aspect of medical care, though, which involves aesthetic procedures and ranges from patients interested in a more youthful appearance to patients with facial and/ or other abnormalities who have been self-conscious for years. Being able to help people feel healthy and beautiful inside and out is why I love what I do. My philosophy: “To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived – this is to have succeeded.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

HUMANE EDUCATION
Exciting new programs at the Gulf Coast Humane Society help the youth of Corpus Christi become more involved in the community.
S
tudies have shown that instilling compassion and empathy toward animals overflows into how students treat one another, increasing their respect and understanding of fellow students, reducing instances of bullying in school and encouraging them to take an active role now or in the future within our community. It is because of this that the Gulf Coast Humane Society (GCHS) has launched the exciting new Humane Education Program. They welcome community youth into the shelter’s new Learning Lab on designated Saturdays, as well as reach out to local classrooms to increase students’ knowledge, compassion and empathy toward each other and all living animals. These educational tours and presentations are led by Hollie Mitchell, who is a certified teacher and a member of the Association of Professional Humane Educators. Several fascinating Learning Labs have already taken place at GCHS such as the Military Working Dogs Lab in which the Naval Air Station of Corpus Christi talked to the kids and held an action-filled demonstration with Alpha the dog. In the Learning Lab, which is free and open to the public, students also get to participate in a tour of the facility and hands-on learning and arts and crafts, as well as interact with friendly shelter dogs and much more. Private tours of the shelter are also available for Girl or Boy Scout Troops and any other youth program interested in learning about interacting with animals, animal shelters and careers in the animal field.
INSTILLING COMPASSION AND EMPATHY TOWARD ANIMALS OVERFLOWS INTO HOW STUDENTS TREAT ONE ANOTHER.
The Humane Education Program’s reach Humane Educator does not end at the Hollie Mitchell teaches kids about pet safety shelter. Mitchell, along in the Learning Lab. with a friendly dog from GCHS, also heads out to local classrooms to teach students about pet safety, proper care and treatment of animals, overpopulation and information on how our shelter operates, volunteer opportunities and service projects. She also recently led a book fair at Barnes & Noble complete with story times and an appearance from the Cat in the Hat. This program also gives kids the opportunity to volunteer at GCHS in special ways outside of the shelter. Our Paw Partners Junior Volunteer program welcomes kids between the ages of 6 and 15 to participate by doing fundraisers for GCHS such as bake sales, food drives and
neighborhood dog washes. They recently held a fundraiser in which the kids sold Jamba Juice gift cards; the kids had a ton of fun and got to learn more about responsibility and participating in the community. The funds raised by the Paw Partners Junior Volunteer program all goes toward the care of the animals at GCHS. The GCHS Humane Education Program and Paw Partners Junior Volunteer Program have brought in and reached out to hundreds of kids from all over Corpus Christi. From the excitement on their faces during these classes, it is obvious that the youth in our community are eager to help and become involved in the welfare of the animals. Providing a program that introduces them to opportunities to become involved in our community at a young age will help ensure that they blossom into proactive community members as adults.
For more information about the Humane Education Program or how you can get your child or students involved, contact Hollie Mitchell at education@gchscc.org.

WOMEN IN RED
After nearly 75 years, the Junior League of Corpus Christi continues to work toward improving the Coastal Bend community through early childhood education and literacy awareness. Special to INSPIRE COASTAL BEND Photos by: D’YAN LOPEZ GARZA
THE WOMEN IN RED. Who are they? They are the women with a vision to make a change in our Coastal Bend community. They are teachers, mothers, small business owners and counselors – everyday women working in the trenches. When Lorine Jones Spoots started having meetings in her home parlor in 1937, she started a movement in Corpus Christi. Almost 75 years and thousands of volunteers later, the Junior League of Corpus Christi (JLCC) continues on as group of dedicated women who are working diligently to better our community through early childhood education and literacy awareness. “When you see the red shirt, you know that something important is hap-

pening,” says Natalie Villarreal, public relations chair. “We want the kids in our community to remember an organization that cared and created positive change in their lives.” Many members of the community can recall major projects such as the Texas State Aquarium and Cole Park that the ladies in red have helped with. However, over the years, the strategy for JLCC has changed. In order to provide a more concentrated effort, JLCC, with the same mission statement, has changed their focus to “child welfare.” The plan includes a three-year community action plan targeting early childhood development. Programs will targets children ages 0 to 6 from a financially deficit area of Cor-

pus Christi. JLCC volunteers will focus on literacy, nutrition, cognitive skills and physically activity. Here are some examples of JLCC’s latest projects: Christmas Tree Forest Exhibit: In collaboration with the Art Museum of South Texas and H-E-B, during the month of December, more than 7,000 children and families visit a reading wonderland of decorated Christmas trees. Trees are decorated by local schools, and after the exhibit closes, the Antonio E. Garcia Arts & Education Center donates the trees to families in need.
Cinderella’s Closet: More than 700 high-school students have gone through the doors of Cinderella’s Closet in order to provide them a positive experience for a milestone event in their lives: prom! Young women receive mentoring, education and professional training as part of their experience. The idea of empowering young women is an important component that drives JLCC. Beginning in 2017, community partner Dress for Success will be taking over the project, allowing JLCC to focus on the ages 0-6 initiative.
Kids in the Kitchen: This initiative is grounded in the belief that children who are empowered with the knowledge of how to feed and exercise their bodies will be less likely to become obese and have fewer health risks. The fun includes menu planning, budgeting, meal prep and of course, eating yummy foods! Story Time: Family literacy is promoted through literacy programs at targeted early childhood development centers which include reading aloud to children, providing valuable reading material and tools for activities.
How Can You Get Involved? 1/ Volunteer: In the spring of every year, JLCC invites dedicated women to join the women red. If you are interested in making a change in our community, go to www.jlcc.org to learn more. 2/ Donate: Community projects cost money, and the only way to get things done is through the generous support of JLCC sponsors. 3/ Attend fundraisers: The JCLL Rummage Sale and Run Amuck Mud Run are the two signature fundraisers for the league.
