What you need to know about your air conditioning filters By: JENNY REMLINGER

our A/C filter needs to be checked, maintained and changed frequently in order to function properly and safely. Maintaining your A/C filter preserves the life of your A/C unit, saves money on your electricity bill and provides a healthier living environment.

What filters do I need? There are so many different sizes and types of filters on the market that it may be overwhelming and a bit confusing. Not everyone can use the standard 1-inch filter you commonly see. Sometimes a 2-, 4-, 5or 6-inch filter is required, like Glasfloss, Honeywell, Aprilaire, Trane, Lennox or Carrier, to name a few. Some filters are used in a filter grill located on your wall or ceiling. Or it may be in a housing unit attached to your unit located in a closet, attic or garage. Most homes have one unit that requires a main filter, and in some cases, they may have a prefilter or two-plus filter grills that require filters. When purchasing a home, always find out where the filter is lo-

cated, how many are needed and which type are best for the unit. Some A/C companies put a label on the inside of the unit door or cabinet of the filter housing to let you know what kind of filter the unit requires. How often should I change my filter? In the large chain stores, a common 1-inch filter reads “90-day filter,” but there are various reasons that isn’t always the case. The frequency with which you change your filter depends on the climate, the location of you home and if you have pets. You need to change your filter more often if you live in warmer, humid climate, live in a dusty area like in the open country, near construction, etc., and/ or if you have pets inside your home. The quality and thickness of your filter will also help determine its longevity. Every home and lifestyle is different. If you live here in South Texas, where it is hot and dusty many months of the year, the recommended change time for a 1-inch filter is usually every 30 days, but ask your local filter specialist for more details, especially if you use a different type of filter.

MAINTAINING YOUR A/C FILTER SAVES MONEY ON YOUR ELECTRICITY BILL AND PROVIDES A HEALTHIER LIVING ENVIRONMENT.

Does filter quality matter? Yes! Not all filters are created equal. Fiberglass versus Polyfiber: Most hardware and grocery stores carry a 1-inch fiberglass filter for around a dollar. A fiberglass filter has an industry slang term of “rock catcher” because the filter media is so loosely woven that you can see through it and it practically only catches particles the size of rocks. A specialty filter store will carry a polyfiber and pleated filter. Polyfiber filters are a better choice than fiberglass because the fibers are more closely woven to catch smaller particles while still allowing the air to pull through easily. Pleated filters: What’s the scoop? Pleated filters collect more particles than polyfiber filters. Those concerned with air quality, like people with allergies or asthma, may want to use a quality pleated filter instead of a polyfiber because it will help filter out more dust, dander and other particles. However, not all pleated filters are the same. Pleated filters have different Merv ratings and structure. You may find a pack of two or three pleated filters at a big chain store are the same cost as one pleated filter at a specialty store. Most likely it is due to the Merv rating and the type of material used to make the filter. When your unit turns on and pulls air through the filter, you don’t want a flimsy, loosely woven filter to bend or fold and let the particles in the air pass through and around the edges of the filter and onto the coils. The higher the Merv rating, the more particles the filter will collect, but you have to be careful because it also means more air is restricted. The higher the Merv rating, the more strain there will be on your unit, and that can cause it to fail earlier than expected and run up your electric bill. Changing your filter more regularly may seem expensive at the time, but it will save you money in the long run.

chewing sugar-free gum or rinsing your mouth with water after you’re done. Both tactics increase saliva flow, which naturally helps return the acidity levels in the mouth to normal. Essentially, the energy and sports drinks available now do more harm than good when it comes to your dental condition. And remember: If you already have a cavity, it can speed up the process and make it worse sooner than you think. Finally, don’t think that brushing your teeth after a swig of an energy drink is going to help. You should wait at least an hour after consuming an energy or sports drink to brush –

A STUDY PUBLISHED in the May/June 2012 issue of General Dentistry (the peer-reviewed clinical journal of the Academy of General Dentistry) found that the consumption of sports and energy drinks is causing irreversible damage to teeth. Specifically, the high acidity levels in the drinks erode tooth enamel, the glossy outer layer of the tooth. Young adults consume these drinks assuming that they will improve their sports performance and energy levels and that they are “better” for them than soda. Most of these patients are shocked to learn that these drinks are essentially bathing their teeth with acid. The researchers examined the acidity levels in 13 sports drinks and nine energy drinks, and found that the acidity levels can vary between brands and flavors. After only five days, the research team found considerable damage to the test enamel, and that energy drinks caused twice as much damage to teeth as sports drinks. This type of damage to tooth enamel is irreversible, and without the protection of enamel, teeth become overly sensitive, prone to cavities and more likely to decay and wear down. After just one sip of an energy drink, your saliva remains acidic enough to dissolve your enamel for upward of 20 minutes. Realistically, most people take at least 20 minutes just to finish the drink, so the acidic saliva remains beyond an hour or two. And before you know it, you take in some other form of drink aside from water, and that maintains the acidic environment for a longer period of time. If you do consume energy or sports drinks, the Academy of General Dentistry recommends

Big Impact Noted medical researcher and pulmonologist Dr. Salim Surani gives local kids the tools they need to stay away from tobacco, to get enough sleep, to eat healthy and more at the Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Your Life Foundation. By: Sarah Tindall Photos by: Dustin Ashcraft

r. Salim Surani is one of the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s leading medical researchers and pulmonologists, discovering the effects of sleep on health, among many, many other topics. He holds positions as associate professor at the University of North Texas and Texas A&M University Corpus Christi, while at the same time, working as the director of critical care services at CHRISTUS Spohn Memorial Hospital and director of the TORR Sleep Centers in Beeville, Alice and Corpus Christi. He also currently serves on several boards, including the CHEST Foundation and the Del Mar College Respiratory Care Program, and has served on the board for CHRISTUS Spohn Health System. He is an editorial board member for several medical publications, including the Journal of Sleep Medicine and Disorders, Clinical Studies

and Medical Case Report, Austin Journal of Clinical Case Report and Open Respiratory Medicine review and Current Respiratory Medicine Review, and he is also a grant reviewer for the Rannis Icelandic Research Fund (European Nation). This sounds like enough to keep the man too busy to sleep, even after all those studies he’s done that show how important it is. But Surani feels that all of this academia is important and impactful – it is most important to take the research and knowledge he has gained and use it to make a difference in people’s lives. This is something he learned many years ago after medical school, when he went into rural Pakistan on a mission to teach the local population about disease prevention and health to improve the quality of life of the people there. So, in 2005, enter the It’s Your Life Foundation. Sura-

ni began the organization to educate local children at a very young age about the damaging effects of smoking before they ever take that first puff. “Smoking is one of the biggest killers, and it’s preventable!” he says. “Nicotine is the most addictive substance in the world, so once people are hooked, it is so much harder to get them to quit than to just have prevented the behavior to begin with. Data showed that people take the first puff on average as early as the fifth grade, so we wanted to reach kids before that age.” The foundation consists of kids who have volunteered to get this message out to their peers. Middle and high school students, along with community volunteers, have spent years making videos and taking them to local schools to give presentations to 50,000 students about the dangers of smoking and give them the tools they need to stay away from tobacco. With that program rolling, Surani decided to expand his reach and start educating kids about other issues

that are negatively affecting their lives. Next on his list: sleep deprivation. “Forty to 50 percent of Americans are sleep deprived,” he says. “This starts and peaks in high school, and can negatively affect grades and mental health for these kids. We’ve started educating students in fourth, fifth and sixth grade before they are exposed to that. We released our first 3-D animation movie about the subject, and received three national academic awards, as well as two Remi awards and one Pixar Academy award for the film.” The current project is on childhood obesity and diabetes. “The foundation always looks at the cause of a problem and where it starts,” Surani says. “South Texas is the epicenter for diabetes. Corpus Christi is the fattest city in the country, and this problem starts as young as 5 years of age, according to data. So the kids who volunteer for the foundation decided to reach kids at 3, 4 and 5 years of age to educate those kids about healthy eating and the importance of exercise to live a healthy lifestyle and stay away from these debilitating diseases.” The middle and high school kids go to each participating school for 45 minutes once a week for four weeks. They show the video, take a chef to show them how to prepare healthy foods, do puppet shows, etc., and even hand out healthy snack as part of the program, all to get kids excited and motivated to choose healthy foods for life. The program has been endorsed by the Junior League of Corpus Christi and the Mayor’s Fitness Council, and it received the Corpus Christi Caller Times’ Community Award in 2013. Now it’s generated interest all over the country, and its impact will continue to spread. Next on the agenda: a program called iConquer specifically targeting diabetes. The foundation went to L to create a 3-D animation movie teaching kids 2 to 6 years of age about the disease. With the reach for these videos and programs averaging 15,000 children a year, this is a little foundation making a big impact. The funding comes mostly from Surani and his supporters, including the Ed Rachal Foundation, the Dr. and Mrs. Hugh A. Kennedy Foundation, the Coastal Community Foundation, the Texas Medical Foundation, the LeVerene and Thomas Howell Foundation and the CITGO Helping Hands for Hillcrest program. However, the organization has never done any organized fundraising campaigns except an annual walk and golf tournament. “We don’t even have an office or application forms, but we have reached more kids than anyone else in the state that I know of,” Surani says. “The community has been phenomenal in its support of us. Many people realize that if you spend the money on prevention, you spend less in the long run. All the credit goes to the community and the kids who have done the project. When you want to do something right, the forces of the whole universe get together to make it happen. It is beautiful, and just you don’t expect it.”

On a Prestigious Path The American Nurses Credentialing Center honors CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Alice with the Pathway to Excellence designation in recognition of the hospital’s efforts to foster the professional development of its nurses. By: Steven Alford

AT CHRISTUS SPOHN HOSPITAL ALICE, Coastal Bend nurses can feel confident they have a place to work that will support them and help them grow professionally. The hospital has just achieved the Pathway to Excellence designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), recognizing hospitals that support and nurture their nurses’ development. It took more than 18 months for CHRISTUS Spohn to achieve this designation – something officials said recognizes the professional satisfaction of nurses in Alice and identifies the hospital as a place where they can flourish. “I’m very proud of our team here in Alice,” said CHRISTUS Spohn Alice Chief Nursing Officer Margot Rios. “The nursing staff have all worked together to achieve this goal.” For an organization to earn the Pathway to Excellence distinction, it must successfully undergo a thorough review process documenting quality initiatives that foster a positive work environment, as defined by American nurses and supported by research. These rigorous 12 initiatives must be present in the facility’s practices, policies and culture. Out of more than 5,000 hospitals in the United States, only 122 are currently certified as Pathway to Excellence facilities. “It’s about a work-life balance that includes professional development; work environment improvements; and making sure our nurses have the tools and knowledge they need,” said Nurse Mari Cuellar, CHRISTUS Spohn’s director of professional practice. “It’s an achievement for the entire team.” Nurses in the organization verify the presence of the ANCC’s criteria in the organization through participation in a completely confidential online survey, giving their input into their workplace. “We want to make sure our nurses have a place to come work that they can feel proud of,” according to Rios. For nursing leaders, the Pathway to Excellence designation serves as confirmation that nurses working at CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Alice know their efforts are supported, officials said. To celebrate, CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Alice has planned an event to recognize the efforts of its staff members, who works hard to make sure their fellow nurses have the tools they need to provide high-quality care. “Thank you to this awesome team,” Rios added. “It’s because of your hard work and commitment that we achieved this recognition.” 22

s Beeville and its surrounding areas thrive with the economic boom of the Eagle Ford Shale, CHRISTUS Spohn, too, has grown to meet the rising needs of the community. The hospital’s longtime women’s clinic has moved to a new location next to CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Beeville, and it has expanded into a full-service family health clinic. More than half-a-dozen CHRISTUS Spohn clinicians are now on hand to treat everyone from children to adults and seniors, according to Physician’s Assistant Theresa Trevino-Arthur, who has been practicing in the community for nearly two decades. “We’re becoming part of the family – treating baby, and mom and dad, grandma and grandpa,” Trevino-Arthur said. “That can include anything from a newborn visit, to monitoring high blood pressure or diabetes. We’re

able to provide a whole spectrum of care.” The clinic has a far reach beyond just the city limits of Beeville. CHRISTUS Spohn staff members treat patients from surrounding cities including George West, Three Rivers, Goliad, Victoria and Refugio. And it’s the clinic’s proximity to CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Beeville that makes it an excellent choice for patients to receive follow-up care after undergoing a procedure within the hospital. “We have a great team assembled here to serve the needs of our community, including everyone from infants to the elderly,” said Nurse Teresa LeBlanc, who said she signed on with the clinic because she is excited to help it grow. The family health clinic strives to become a medical home for local residents, keeping in line with CHRISTUS Spohn Health System’s new strategic plan for the community to provide better health care at affordable costs. “It’s an all-encompassing place for families to visit,” said CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Beeville Chief Nursing Officer Daniel St. Armand. “We’re trying to provide more and easier access to primary care for our Beeville residents.” Part of this strategy involves practicing preventative health care, which includes helping patients manage their health, maintain a healthy lifestyle and lessen the need for hospital visits. “We don’t want to just see our patients when they have a cough,” Trevino-Arthur added. “We’re here to help you get healthy, stay healthy, and should you need to visit our hospital, we’ll be here to provide excellent follow-up care.” The CHRISTUS Spohn Family Health Clinic welcomes new patients and is located at 1602 E. t was a day of celebration for the Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Foundation. On Friday, Jan. 16, a crowd of 410 attendees gathered at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi to commemorate the legacy of the good doctor and founder of the American GI Forum of the United States of America. Mrs. Cecilia Garcia-Akers, daughter and president of the foundation, welcomed the crowd, introducing the master of ceremonies, Steve Arnold of the Corpus Christi Caller Times and treasurer of the foundation. The ROTC Color Guard from Texas A&M University Corpus Christi presented the colors, followed by Ms. Hilda Lamas singing her powerful rendition of the National Anthem. Mr. Jim Akers, son-in-law of the late doctor, led the guests in the pledge, and Garcia’s daughter, Dr. Susanna Garcia, led the invocation. Mayor Nelda Martinez delivered a proclamation over the ceremony, prior to Dr. Rebecca Saaveda, vice president for strategic management at the University of Texas Medical Branch, addressing the crowd with the keynote message. The families of Garcia-Akers and Tony Canales (the doctor’s nephew) were presented with street signs displaying the name, Dr. Hector P. Garcia, by Braselton Homes. This was to signify the actual street in Corpus Christi that they are naming in his honor. The event’s proceeds will provide a scholarship to be presented to an educational institution, college or university that meets the requirements of the foundation in September 2015. Additionally, they will help the foundation acquire funds for the Hector P. Garcia Learning Center at Texas A&M University Corpus Christi. The foundation will be seeking donations from individuals and organizations this spring to assist with this funding. The foundation also provides assistance to Christus Spohn Health, and will continue to do so, as they are planning and developing the Dr. Hector P. Garcia Family Health Center in Corpus Christi.

The iConquer: Diabetes program helps prepare youth to become leaders in combating diabetes. By: DR. SALIM SURANI

unning, walking, jumping, hiking, cycling, climbing and dancing: These are all integral aspects of our life. Imagine living life as an amputee. Corpus Christi is ranked No. 1 in the nation for below-knee amputation, and it ranks No. 3 in the state of Texas for death from diabetes-related complications. Although eating sweets in moderation is sometimes OK, the overconsumption of sweet and saccharine foods has quickly become an integral part of our dietary culture. Approximately every 10 seconds, a person dies from diabetes-related complications; approximately 3.8 million people per year die from diabetes-related complications; and 250 million people, or approximately 6 percent of the world’s adult population, suffer from diabetes. Diabetes has become a global challenge that has reached epidemics throughout the world. In order to combat this epidemic, the United Nations recently passed a resolution to urge countries to emphasize their resources in the education, prevention and treatment of diabetes.

The prevalence of Type 2 diabetes is radically increasing among the U.S. population. Currently, 29.1 million people, or 9.3 percent of the U.S. population, suffer from diabetes, and 1.7 million new cases of diabetes are seen in this country every year. Diabetes is quickly becoming a household name as more and more parents and children become affected by it. Twelve point eight percent of Hispanics have diabetes, compared to 7.6 percent of Caucasians. In the United States alone, diabetes-related costs total to more than $245 billion a year. In Nueces County, the prevalence of diabetes is more than 14 percent. Type 2 diabetes has always been associated with adult population. Contrary to popular belief, incidences of Type 2 diabetes have been more common among kids and teenagers who are overweight and obese. Furthermore, approximately 8 to 45 percent of children who have been newly diagnosed with diabetes have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Diabetes is a preventable and treatable disease. Imagine the lives of children who have recently been diagnosed with diabetes. They are

scared, frightened, worried and afraid. Early education combating diabetes not only helps educate them about prevention, but also helps alleviate and vex their fears. Efforts have been made toward early education in diabetes, especially among the high-risk adult population. Prevention efforts among children are minimal. Leslie Saloman, a young teenager is taking care of several family members who are suffering from diabetes. Her day involves checking their blood sugars, educating them about an adequate diet and ensuring compliance. She already has a few family members who are suffering from diabetes-related complications, and she has the risk factors and genetic tendency to suffer from diabetes. She is prepared, despite her several responsibilities as a child. It is all because of her self will to understand the disease, diet, prevention and importance of a regular checkup. The youth-driven iConquer: Diabetes program, including Leslie, aims to educate children from age 4 to 6 about diabetes. The middle and high school students leading the program use skits, animated movies and sublimal messages in an entertaining and palatable way. This program will help prepare the today’s children to be future leaders, and to help prevent diabetes and decrease the incidence of this deadly disease. This early education program will help young children conquer future challenges with more confidence.
