Advanced Placement Program: An Edge In College Learning

AP provides students with the opportunity to engage with college-level coursework during their high school years. By taking AP Exams, students can earn college credit and secure Advanced Placement.

Participating in AP courses and exams during high school offers students various advantages in college, including the ability to:

Earn College Credit and Placement

AP scores can potentially earn students college credits before beginning their college journey, facilitating a smoother transition into higher education.

Stand Out to Colleges

Displaying "AP" on a high school transcript highlights a student's dedication to academic excellence, while successfully completing AP exams showcases their commitment to mastering college-level material.

Save Money and Time

Attaining credit or placement through AP courses allows for greater scheduling flexibility and may

Keep Options Open

Acquiring college credit through AP studies provides students with the flexibility to switch majors, pursue additional degrees, participate in international study programs, or explore internships.

Distinguishing AP from IB (International Baccalaureate):

Distinguishing AP from IB (International Baccalaureate), both programs cater to academically proficient students, yet with distinct differences. The IB program offers a comprehensive curriculum incorporating both academic and extracurricular components leading to a diploma. In contrast, the AP program focuses on specific subjects, allowing students to concentrate on areas of advanced study. While the IB program emphasizes creativity, critical thinking, and writing skills, the AP program emphasizes expertise in specific subjects.

Colleges generally do not express a preference for either AP or IB courses, as both options offer rigorous academic opportunities and the chance to earn college credit based on exam performance.

COUNSELING PROGRAM

At Balboa Academy, our counseling programs are carefully designed to nurture students' holistic development and prepare them for a successful future. Our comprehensive approach covers social-emotional learning, personalized guidance, and essential partnerships with students, parents, and the community.

In the Elementary Counseling Program, we adopt a three-tiered approach to social-emotional learning that focuses on five key competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. Through bi-monthly storybook-based mini lessons, students from 1st to 4th grade cultivate developmentally appropriate social-emotional skills, promoting empathy, friendship, and self-regulation. Focused groups and peer mediation provide additional avenues for targeted support, while individual meetings empower students to establish personal goals and learn problem-solving skills.

Transitioning to Middle School, our counselors play a pivotal role in guiding students through the complexities of adolescence. Recognizing students' perceptions of the world, we provide invaluable support in decision-making and self-discovery. Our program is grounded in empathy, patience, and understanding. Classroom guidance, small group/individual counseling, student observations, and mediation contribute to a proactive approach that fosters positive interactions and personal growth.

In High School, our counseling services extend to comprehensive college coaching, supporting students as they navigate the transition from high school to higher education. Balboa Academy's counselors are active members of esteemed associations, ensuring that students receive top-tier guidance in academic achievement, personal and social development, and college and career coaching. By promoting readiness, accessibility to rigorous educational opportunities, and a positive adjustment to the future, our high school counseling program empowers students to excel and thrive in their chosen paths.

With a steadfast commitment to the well-being and growth of our students, Balboa Academy's counseling programs exemplify our dedication to their academic, personal, and social success. Through collaboration, advocacy, and a profound understanding of their needs, we provide an environment that nurtures their potential and fosters a lifelong love of learning.

SCHOOL LIFE

Balboa Academy has implemented a comprehensive structure across all grade levels aimed at fostering a strong sense of belonging, community, and leadership development among our students.

Elementary School (ES) students are organized into "Color Teams." Middle School students are part of "Dragon Tribes." High School (HS) students belong to "Dragon Houses."

These structures transcend grade levels, bringing together students who may not typically interact. Monthly team-building activities are a cornerstone of this approach, promoting character development, communication, compromise, and acceptance. Consequently, our school culture is recognized for its nurturing environment, where

In addition to creating a sense of community, we actively encourage student leadership and involvement through our Student Council. At the HS level, each HS Dragon House sends a representative to form the HS Dragon Student Council (DRACO), which plans and approves all HS events throughout the year. In the Middle School, Student Council members are elected by their peers and attend the annual Student Leadership Conference. They play pivotal roles as Masters of Ceremonies at school events, act as ushers, organize fundraisers, and plan and coordinate various school activities. In the Elementary School, elected Student Council members focus on organizing charitable initiatives throughout the year, including programs like Toys for Tots and food drives.

GUIDANCE

Balboa Academy's High School Counselor is a proud member of International Association for College Admissions Counselors and the American School Counselor Associations. As an integral member of our school community, the counselor provides comprehensive support to all students, encompassing academic achievement, personal and social development, and college and career counseling. Our aim is to enhance students' productivity and facilitate a positive adjustment for their future, ultimately contributing to their overall success.

Counseling

Throughout the year, we take pride in hosting more than 250 universities from around the world. We work individually with each student to ensure exposure to the diverse range of universities that visit our campus. Recognizing the unique interests, academic requirements, talents, and personalities of each student, we refrain from prescribing a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, we deeply value and acknowledge the individual needs of each student, crafting personalized plans to assist them in selecting and gaining acceptance to the school that best suits them.

Our College Counselor at Balboa Academy possesses extensive experience and remains up-to-date with the ever-evolving landscape of college admissions. Our counselor serves as a valuable resource to address any questions or concerns that may arise throughout the college application process.

Testing

The majority of colleges worldwide require students to submit standardized test scores during the application process. To help our students prepare for these assessments, we mandate that all 9th, 10th and 11th-grade students take the PSAT in October. This serves as valuable preparation for the SAT, a widely recognized test for college admission in the US and various other countries.

Furthermore, Balboa Academy serves as an official test center for both the SAT and ACT, providing students with the opportunity to register and take these tests in a comfortable and familiar environment.

We achieve this by placing the individual student at the forefront of our approach, providing a comprehensive curriculum built upon Inspired's three core pillars: Academics, Performing & Creative Arts, and Sports.

While Academics hold a central position in our educational framework, they are complemented in equal measure by the vibrant worlds of Performing & Creative Arts and Sports. This diverse curriculum ensures that each student has the opportunity to uncover their passions and hone their skills, ultimately leading to the development of confident, thoughtful, and knowledgeable young individuals.

Academics

At the heart of all our schools is a commitment to academic excellence, which empowers our students with critical and lateral thinking skills that inform their understanding and application of a wide range of disciplines.

Performing & Creative Arts

The arts play a vital role in fostering confidence and self-assurance among our students, cultivating their lifelong interests. This boost in confidence stems from active participation in the arts, an appreciation of their significance in the human experience, and a creative approach that permeates all aspects of our students' endeavors.

Sports

At Inspired, our commitment to sports encompasses a holistic approach that emphasizes health and well-being, fun, motivation, self-discipline, and self-esteem. Whether engaging students in team sports or introducing them to individual pursuits, our aim is to offer an athletics program tailored to the unique interests of every student.

While some students in our schools go on to achieve national and international recognition in their chosen sports, all students derive the benefits of improved fitness, enjoyment, and a lifelong passion for physical activity. The physical exercise inherent in sports also enhances mental alertness, a critical component for successful academic pursuits.
