Create the ideal outdoor space for Autumn entertaining

As we say goodbye to summer’s hot days and balmy nights, it doesn’t mean we have to head indoors. Autumn is the ideal time to be outdoors and entertain, especially since the weather is neither too hot nor too cold. Whether it’s a dinner party, a relaxing barbecue with your family or casual drinks with friends, here’s how you can elevate your outdoor space this autumn so it’s functional, fabulous and has the feel-good factor for you and your guests.

FRESHEN UP FURNITURE AND SOFT FURNISHINGS

Whether you’re sitting down for lunch on the deck, dinner in the alfresco area or a few drinks on your balcony, there’s nothing more important than having the right furniture for the occasion. You might have a large dining table for meals but it’s equally important to have a casual area for more relaxed gatherings. Think chaise lounges, stools, canopies and ottomans to add seating while creating a more informal, laid-back atmosphere. Make sure that anything you buy is functional as well as comfortable. If you already have enough outdoor furniture, then maybe it’s time your decor needs a bit of a facelift. If so, start by giving everything a good clean, then consider repainting old settings or adding a fresh coat of stain to faded timber surfaces to bring them back to life. Add a splash of colour with soft furnishings and seasonal accessories such as bright cushions, an outdoor rug, a large mirror, or an autumnal floral arrangement in the centre of your table.

MOOD LIGHTING

Prepare for evening entertaining with the right lighting and keep your outdoor space cosy, welcoming and relaxing for your guests. Set the mood with solar-powered lights scattered throughout the garden and along walkways and hanging festoon lights – they are not only an attractive way to illuminate your yard but easy to install as well as energy efficient. If you have a sculpture, fountain or any striking architectural elements, then a well-placed spotlight can accentuate its features and create an attractive centrepiece. For softer and more subtle lighting options, consider lanterns or candles that will cast beautiful shadows and patterns across your outdoor space.

MAKE YOUR GARDEN GLOW

If you’re planning on entertaining this season, then you really want your green space looking its best. Begin with a good clean up – mow lawns, rake leaves, weed paths, remove old or dying plants, and prune flowers where necessary. To refresh your garden beds, add a new layer of mulch and remove leaves and debris. Be sure to keep up the watering and consider installing a sprinkler system to keep your plants thriving and luscious. If your garden is looking a bit tired and you want to make a good impression, then head to your local nursery for inspiration. Look at new plants and flowers, consider pots and hanging baskets to scatter around the garden, or maybe a water fountain to really make a statement. If your shed or fences are looking a bit drab, give palings and doors a fresh coat of paint or stain to make everything look new again.

STAY WARM

As late autumn settles in, the evenings will get cooler so consider ways you can seamlessly transition from daytime entertaining to night while keeping your guests warm. Create the perfect autumnal evening outdoors with a gas patio heater, an electric heater mounted to your exterior wall or alfresco ceiling, or a brazier or fire pit, which come in all shapes, sizes and styles to suit your taste. A heat source, especially a fire pit, can become the main feature for everyone to gather together and snuggle up, so think about how your furniture is positioned around it. Likewise, keep everyone cosy with some soft quality throws and blankets alongside comfortable cushions, which can look particularly stylish if matched with your existing furniture and decor.

SHADE AND PROTECTION

A bit of sunshine and Vitamin D is good for all of us, but the autumn sun can still pack a punch and get in the way of a comfortable day of outdoor entertaining. That’s where shade comes in – it’s not only important to cool things down and protect your skin, but the right choices can make your home look stylish and sophisticated. Depending on your budget, you could consider a gazebo, install a permanent pergola or hang a lightweight shade sail in a secluded corner where you can relax and unwind. For more flexible options, consider a retractable awning or pop-up canopy. If you’re after something more cost effective, then opt for a large umbrella with UV-resistant material – it’s not only sun smart but will also create a relaxed, holiday atmosphere at home. These options can also help contain the warmth on cooler autumnal nights.

POOLSIDE PREPARATIONS

A swimming pool is often the centrepiece of a backyard so it’s important to keep it sparkling clean and well-maintained if you’re planning to entertain around it, but especially so if you and your guests are going to swim – with the average high temperature in March reaching around 25 degrees, going for a dip is definitely not off the cards. When it comes to entertaining around your pool, take some time to think about how the space will be used and what type of furniture, lighting and amenities you will need close by. Remember, you want your pool and surrounding area to be inviting and relaxing so consider some statement greenery, comfortable sun lounges with colourful cushions, an umbrella, and even some bright flotation toys for a bit of fun.
