Explore the South Coast’s best picnic spots this spring
Spring has finally sprung across the South Coast so what better time than now to embrace the outdoors. The Eurobodalla region is brimming with picturesque picnic spots for the whole family to enjoy, so head outside, lay down the picnic blanket, relax and soak up the sunshine.
Here’s our pick of the best spots.
GARDEN BAY
The picnic area Garden Bay in Lilli Pilli is one of the most picturesque locations for a picnic along the South Coast. Only 10 minutes south of Batemans Bay, this serene setting overlooks Garden Bay and offers stunning ocean views, lots of shade, a picnic shelter and play equipment.
COOKIES BEACH
Soak up the sun and have a picnic amongst the local wildlife at Cookies Beach picnic area in South Durras. This scenic spot is just 10 minutes off the highway and offers spectacular beach views, lush bushland surrounds and interesting rock formations. Be sure to make the short stroll to the southern headland and explore the impressive Wasp Head geological site.

HOLMES LOOKOUT
Holmes Lookout, situated a few kilometres west of Batemans Bay, offers a beautiful bird’s eye view of the Clyde River, Budawang Ranges and surrounding mountains. This remote lookout is set among lush bushland and tall gum trees and has picnic tables and barbeques. The area is great for birdwatching so keep an eye out for parrots, kookaburras, honeyeaters, tree creepers, yellow robins, and eastern spine bills.
SHELLY BEACH
Shelly Beach is situated at the entrance to the Moruya River and boasts wide-spanning views over Bengello Beach, the Moruya rock wall, and the Pacific Ocean, offering the ideal setting for a relaxing picnic. The area’s popular picnic spot is located at the eastern end of the beach and has grassy lawns, picnic tables, barbeques and lots of shade. The site is surrounded by beautiful bushland and is a great spot for fishing, surfing, swimming and beach walks.

MONGARLOWE RIVER
The serene picnic area at Mongarlowe River in the Monga National Park offers the ultimate bush escape within an hour of Batemans Bay. This secluded outdoor sanctuary is surrounded by a eucalypt forest and offers sheltered picnic tables, river swimming, birdwatching and walking tracks. Be sure to walk the short Link track that takes you through the eucalypts, into a tree fern valley, and then under the rainforest canopy at Penance Grove. Keep a look out for local wildlife including platypus swimming in the river.
