The National Dinosaur Museum is a delight for the young and young at heart. With one of the biggest permanent collections of interactive dinosaurs in Australia, you can get up close and personal with the skeletons and fossils of some of the most impressive prehistoric creatures that once roamed the earth. What’s more, the museum is not just about dinosaurs, but also includes exhibitions and displays that cover the history of life on this planet, with fossils from 700-million-year-old marine fauna through to fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.

The Australian War Memorial is arguably one of the most iconic attractions in Canberra and proudly commemorates the lives and stories of the people who have served, and continue to serve our nation in war, conflict, peacekeeping and humanitarian operations. Not only a memorial, it is also a world-class museum, shrine, archive and research centre and is home to exhibitions, artworks, large technology objects and countless personal records. Everyday at 4:45pm, the memorial hosts the Last Post Ceremony in the Commemorative Courtyard, sharing the story behind one of the names on the Roll of Honour, so be sure to schedule your visit around it.
The Canberra Railway Museum’s collection takes you back in time to the formative years of Australian rail history, with locomotives, rolling stock and other interesting railway artefacts, most of which had connections to the railway history of the ACT. Located in Kingston, the trains on display are nothing short of impressive and all are open and explorable. Be sure to look out for the Locomotive 3016 tank engine built in 1903, board the footplate of the steam locomotive 1210, which brought the first train to Canberra in 1914, check out the TAM 1888 express sleeping car built in 1929 – one of the last of its kind, and finally, the Locomotive 1210, an express passenger steam train built in 1878 – the oldest in the museum’s collection.

Narrabundah property was completed in 2021 and won the new house category in the Canberra Low Carbon Housing Challenge in the same year. The design and construction of the home is true to the strict Passive House certification criteria, with a range of sustainable features, including rooftop solar panels, rainwater collection and the reuse of the materials from the site’s original 1940s cottage, making it a net-zero construction (or more than 100% improved) when compared to the carbon footprint of an average Canberra house. The home also has an airtight envelope and a heat exchange system that recovers up to 96% of heat and a conservatory that retains heat in the winter months and provides a space for homegrown produce all year round.

For anyone who is only just starting out on their new home journey, Tolhurst says to firstly educate yourself on the benefits of Passive House and what it involves.

Photography by Passivhaus Tolhurst says that while sustainable design can mean different things to different people, within the building and construction industry it is the heating and cooling of our buildings that is the largest source of carbon “Passiveemissions.House design focuses on thermal comfort, indoor air quality and energy efficiency, so for me as an architect, I feel it ticks a lot of boxes in terms of sustainable design,” he says.
Tolhurst also recommends attending an open house day to experience what a Passive House feels like firsthand.
It is important to understand that the Passive House standard is a holistic approach, says Tolhurst, based on building physics and the movement of heat and moisture within a “Thebuilding.Passive House approach incorporates five construction principles that all work together to create a comfortable and healthy home. They are: high performance windows, continuous thermal insulation, no air leakage, mechanical ventilation with heat recovery and no thermal bridges,” he says.

“The Australian Passive House Association website is a great place to start for resources and events. There’s a growing community of advocates who are usually only too happy to share their knowledge and experience. For those who are closer to actually starting a project, it is very important to have a qualified Passive House designer on your team from the early design stages who will be responsible for the PHPP modelling.”

Indoor gardening: The best plants for every room in your home Springtime is here, the flowers are in bloom and outdoor gardens are coming to life, so bring the vibrant hues of the season indoors and surround yourself with the calming effects of household plants. Whether you get plenty of sun in your home or have a lot of windowless space, here are the best choices for every room in the house.
BATHROOM When it comes to your bathroom, it’s important to choose a plant from a tropical climate that thrives in a humid environment. If there is a window that spills bright and indirect sunlight into your bathroom, then the pilea peperomioides (also known as the pancake, Chinese money plant or UFO plant) is your best pick. The majesty palm is another plant that loves humidity, and while they can handle low light from time to time, they grow best in sunny locations. Other popular choices for the bathroom include snake plants, fiddle leaf figs, spider plants or white
The kitchen is one of the most used areas in the home, so why not fill it with colour and introduce some plant life this season. If you have a bright window sill and you want something easy to look after, then look no further than the aloe vera plant. Like walls, there’s only so much you can change in your new rental property, but it’s not impossible, and the best and easiest place to start is with a rug. If you’re looking to cover floorboards or carpet that’s not your style, then choose a colourful or textured rug to elevate your look, which can easily be done without much effort or cost. The best way to maximise the impact of a rug is by putting it under your dining table or in the centre of your lounge room.

There’s not a lot you can do to the walls in your new rental property, but manufacturers are now offering removable wallpaper so you can easily give your interior a temporary refresh as the seasons change. Consider an abstract painting, a gallery of photographs, or make a statement with an oversized mirror as a centrepiece on a blank wall. KITCHEN If you want to change the look of the kitchen in your rental property, then a highimpact but cost-effective place to start is with appliances. Many brands are creating matching sets of kettles, toasters and blenders, even fridges, so think about the aesthetic you are trying to create, then match them with like-coloured utensils to create a colour-coordinated space. If you want your kitchen to make more of an impact, then add a large bowl or two of brightly coloured fruits and vegetables on the kitchen bench, as well as a vase of flowers to add a splash of colour. If storage or bench space is lacking, then opt for a rolling kitchen bench to move around as you need, then get some new bench stools to complete the look.

WINDOWS If the window furnishings in your new rental are a bit dated or just aren’t to your taste, then consider installing new blinds or curtains to introduce your own style into your home. White or neutral-coloured curtains can really help to brighten up rooms, as do blinds that are partially see-through, allowing the spring sunlight to stream into bedrooms and living areas. New window furnishings will not only freshen the look, but also hide any dated window sills or walls that you feel might need the attention taken off them.
