You won’t be disappointed with the unique galleries and culturally rich museums that the South Coast has to offer, so here are some of the best for you to explore this spring.

GRACE PALEG STUDIO GALLERY

The Grace Peleg Studio Gallery showcases the works of this award-winning Australian artist and teacher who specialises in the medium of pastel.

With over 50 years experience, Grace’s works consist of over 300 commissioned portraits as well as life drawing, landscape and still life. She is also President of the South Coast Pastel Society. Grace holds regular drawing and painting classes and workshops in her Surf Beach studio gallery where you can learn all about contour drawing, form, tone and colour. Keep an eye out for Grace’s work which can also be seen at various exhibitions in the local area and throughout Australia.

BATEMANS BAY HERITAGE MUSEUM

The Batemans Bay Heritage Museum, previously known as the Old Courthouse Museum, opened in 1985 when a new courthouse was built in the Bay. The museum’s vast collection has grown considerably over the last 37 years and includes historic photographs, antique machinery and tools, rural technology, costume, dolls, as well as memorabilia spanning maritime, military, education, geology, crime, gold, timber, domestic life, and the local community history.

MARKET GALLERY ON EDWARD

Market Gallery on Edward is a cooperative venture of local artists showcasing their unique and creative works, all inspired by the Eurobodalla region. Located in Batehaven, this eclectic gallery is a part of Edward Road Market Place, which also includes a diverse range of locally grown fruit and vegetables, baked goods, flowers, handmade items and collectables, as well as live music twice weekly. The gallery is also the start of an artistic art trail that stretches from Batehaven all the way to Mogo and beyond.

SYDNEY ST GALLERY

The Sydney St Gallery opened in Mogo in 1988 and is one of the go-to galleries along the South Coast. Established by pastel artist Lee Miller, it is now home to the striking paintings of Australian artist Purusha, a freeform creative who has been painting in oils for over three decades. The gallery also showcases the works of glass artist, Tony Trivett as well as Lee Honey who is known for her paintings, collages and large-scale installations.

MORUYA HISTORICAL MUSEUM

The Moruya Historical Museum, situated in the heritage-listed Emmott House, is home to a fascinating collection of furniture, book, artefacts and memorabilia that pay homage to the people and history of the local Moruya region. Many of the eclectic items on display were donated by local families and date back to pre-European settlement through to the modern day. Adjoining the museum is the Genealogy Research Room, which houses a large archive for those who are interested in researching their family history.

MOGO COLLECTIVE

The Mogo Collective is situated in the heart of town boasting a charming collection of creative works from local artisans. The space showcases local and regional art including paintings, photography, sculpture, wood and metal work, textiles, fashion, jewellery, collectables, antiques, homewares, indigenous handcrafts, furniture and food.

IAN LAKEY GALLERY

The Ian Lakey Gallery in Lilli Pilli is the home to the wonderful works of this local South Coast resident and talented artisan. Ian is a self taught painter who started using oils, but acrylic is now his medium of choice. Ian’s art is inspired by the local landscape, and he also creates prints and bookmarks.

BATEMANS BAY VISITORS CENTRE ART GALLERY

The Batemans Bay Visitors Centre Art Gallery showcases a proud collection of creative works from the Eurobodalla region’s many talented artists. The gallery is home to a vibrant collection of paintings, photography, jewellery, craft from handmade textiles, glassware and carvings of local birdlife. All art is available for sale, and there are also souvenirs and quality homewares available to purchase.
