BUILDING HOPE
FOR OU R C OM MU N I T Y
McKemie Place, originally founded in 2007, is the only overnight single homeless women’s shelter in all of Mobile, Baldwin, and Washington Counties. Each year, McKemie Place helps hundreds of women get back on their feet by giving them a safe place to sleep; a warm meal; job, finance, and skill training; and the loving support needed to regain their independence. McKemie Place recently held its annual fundraiser, “Build Hope,” on September 26th at Mobile’s new event space, Crown Hall, to raise the funds needed to continue to offer its life-changing support. Guests enjoyed delicious hors d’oeuvres by Bay Gourmet Catering and rocked out to the Velcro Pygmies, all while bidding on silent auction items provided by local businesses and donors. McKemie Place is so grateful for everyone who helped make this fundraising event a success. By Caroline Edmondson // Photos Charissa Ferington Photography

New Option for Treating Major Depressive Disorder Sadness is a natural part of life. People may feel sad or depressed when someone they love passes away, or they experience one of life’s challenges, such as a serious illness or divorce. These feelings are normal and often short-lived. However, for some, the feeling of sadness can persist and intensify for extended periods. When that happens, they may have major depressive disorder. Major depressive disorder is one of the most common mental health disorders in the United States and, as such, is the most common diagnosis treated by BayView Professional Associates’ clinicians. BayView introduces a new therapy: Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation
Is TMS right for you? John Conrad, the assistant director of BayView Professional Associates and a licensed independent clinical social worker with more than 25 years of experience, encourages people to first learn all they can about the treatment. “If you have been diagnosed with major depressive disorder and medication is not working or the side effects are intolerable, you should ask your doctor about TMS,” Conrad says. “Treatment-resistant depression is historically debilitating, and this is a new option with fewer side effects than traditional medications, thus offering a chance to live life anew.”
BayView is offering a new treatment option to help adults struggling with major depressive disorder, specifically for those who have tried and failed other treatment options and medications. Treatment-resistant depression is a devastating condition associated with early death from suicide or poor physical health and an impaired ability to work. There is a population of patients who do not respond to antidepressant treatment, and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, or TMS, is another option available to help them live a better life.
Psychiatrists support the use of TMS
How does TMS work? TMS is a noninvasive procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain to improve symptoms of depression. When a nerve cell “fires,” an electrical impulse travels along its length. It communicates with other nerve cells by releasing neuro-transmitters, which create an electrical impulse in other cells. In depressed patients, electrical activity in certain areas of the brain is reduced. TMS uses a focused electromagnetic coil to rapidly pulse a magnetic field to the targeted area of the brain. The magnetic pulses induce an electrical current in the brain, stimulating the nerve cells and increasing the brain activity to normal levels.
BayView Professional Associates 1015 Montlimar Drive | Mobile, AL 36609 (251) 660-2360 BayView-Associates.org
Some people living with major depressive disorder cannot remember life without depression. The National Institute of Health estimates 10 to 30 percent of people with depression do not respond to first-line treatments. Treatment-resistant depression is a clinical concern and can pose significant burdens to patients and their families. “TMS is readily incorporated into the patient’s treatment plan and allows for minimal disruption during the day,” says Sean Sinclair, M.D. “Appointments run 35 minutes at most. Research supports the use of TMS to treat major depressive disorder, as well as anecdotal experience. This new option for patients adds immensely to our services here at BayView.” To learn more about how TMS may help you, call BayView Professional Associates at (251) 660-2360.
Live happier and healthier. When the juggling act becomes too much to handle, we can help you find balance in your home and work life. BayView offers solution-focused counseling for individuals, families and businesses.

B r e a s t C a n c e r Aw a r e n e s s : U n d e r s t a n d i n g Yo u r R i s k Every woman is at some risk of developing breast cancer, and although this disease is predominantly found in women, some men may also be at risk for developing this silent killer. “Understanding your risk for breast cancer is vital when it comes to prevention and early detection,” says Lisa Burch, M.D., an internal medicine physician with Alabama Medical Group. “By understanding your risk, you can work directly with your healthcare provider to develop a risk reduction treatment plan with strategies that are tailored specifically for you.” By Caroline Edmondson
A
s of January 2019, more than 3.1 million women in the U.S. are reported to have a history with breast cancer. A woman’s risk increases by 50 percent if she has a first-degree relative (mother, sister, daughter) who has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Even more shocking, if a woman has two firstdegree relatives who have been diagnosed, their risk is five times higher. While these statistics are eyeopening (and frankly, terrifying), understanding how likely you are to develop breast cancer – or any disease for that matter – through a health risk assessment with your physician can aide in prevention or early detection and help reduce the severity of treatment. “A breast cancer risk assessment is a powerful tool that helps physicians determine their patients’ risk for developing breast cancer and helps identify when and how often they should be screened,” explains Lisa Burch, M.D., of Alabama Medical Group. “Risk assessments take many factors into consideration, such as family history, age, race, health, and other components of your health history that may influence your risk of developing breast cancer at some point in your life.” Once your assessment is completed, there are three precautionary steps to help lower the risk of developing breast cancer or minimize the severity of the disease:
LIFESTYLE CHANGES Maintaining a healthy weight plays a large role in whether a person will develop any form of cancer in his or her lifetime. This also means ensuring you are getting the nutrition you need from healthy foods. As cliché as it sounds, “You are what you eat,” which means if you are constantly eating overly processed foods, your health will begin to deteriorate. Also, getting at least 30 minutes of exercise in every day can reap wonderful benefits.
Lisa B. Burch, M.D.
F R EQ U EN T S C R EEN I N G If you are considered a high risk due to family history, it will be in your best interest to be screened more frequently for lumps because catching cancer early can make all the difference. Talking with your primary care physician will allow you to devise a screening plan tailored to you. Some of these screenings may include a monthly self-exam, a yearly breast exam by your doctor, a mammogram starting at age 40, a MRI, and even an ultrasound.
PROACTIVE SURGERY If your family history shows a large risk of aggressive breast cancer, it may be in your best interest to remove one or both breasts in a procedure called prophylactic surgery. This surgery can reduce your risk by as much as 97 percent, as it removes almost all of your breast tissue.
20 ACCESS Magazine / October 2019
While nothing will 100 percent guarantee that you will not develop breast cancer in your lifetime, it’s important to understand that by following these guidelines and having an individualized plan, physicians are able to detect the disease earlier, which leads to better outcomes. If you have concerns about your breast health, call (251)414-5900 or visit alabamamedicalgroup.com to schedule an appointment today. The primary care physicians at Alabama Medical Group are ready to help you calculate and understand your risk factors. At Alabama Medical Group, you will never have to go into the future of the unknown alone — your health is their priority.

O
riginally from Tifton, Ga., Chicken Salad Chick (CSC) Owner Misty Hudson Whitehead was drawn to the Bay area prior to having children. After living in Mobile for two years, Misty fell in love with the area and the idea that she wanted to raise her future children in this “little slice of heaven.” As life would have it, though, she ultimately moved away and started a family. While working as a medical device rep in North Carolina, Misty would often make trips to bring her (then) two children to the area to experience Mardi Gras and the area beaches. Forever searching for her sign to stay, she finally stumbled upon Chicken Salad Chick. “A friend was one of the first franchise owners and she told me I was crazy if I didn't do it,” Misty shares. “I called Kevin Brown who started the company with his wife, Stacy Brown, and literally pestered them until they would meet with me. I insisted on Mobile and Baldwin Counties and was able to convince them they function as the same city,” Misty says. Looking for someone with a servant’s heart, Christian values, and someone who would invest in their community, Kevin and Stacy were extremely picky in choosing who would be able to live out their franchising dream. Naturally, they saw all of this in Misty, and shortly thereafter she opened her first location on Hillcrest in Mobile. Despite never owning a business, Misty’s first CSC was the No. 1 store in the franchise two years in a row. “It was overwhelming opening my first store,” Misty admits. “I had walked away from a lucrative career and put everything I had into this restaurant. It took me three or four years to truly get it figured out and find the right people. This is exactly what God put me on Earth to do,” she adds. Misty’s success has snowballed from there, as she’s now opened a total of three Chicken Salad Chick locations, with two more set to open soon. She has been recognized with various awards and honors such as Owner of the Year, has been a member of the 100K Club for six years, and is one of five owners to sit on the CSC Franchise Advisory Council that votes and makes decisions for the 130 U.S. locations. And just like her customers, Misty is just as obsessed with Chicken Salad Chick’s offerings, often eating it multiple times a week. Her favorite flavor is anything with a kick to it, such as their Jalapeño Holly, Kickin’ Kay Lynn, Buffalo Barclay, or Jazzy Julie. “The spicy flavors fit my personality,” Misty jokes.
In fact, Misty sells more Jalapeño Holly than most locations because it’s her personal favorite (although the Classic Carol is always a bestseller, too). Fun fact? “I am amazed every day by children and their love for chicken salad,” she says. “As of today, there are very few local schools we do not serve a special lunch (I have to give a shout out to my catering managers for this),” she shares. Although it may appear easy, Misty knows how difficult it can be for a woman to jumpstart her own business and has had her fair share of prior failures. Her top tip? “Try small, local banks for loans. They are willing to take a chance on you,” she says. But it’s being her own boss that really takes the cake. “I love being a girl boss; it’s very empowering

and nothing makes me happier than showing my kids I can do anything,” Misty shares. “As a strong woman, my main goal is to raise independent and kind children.” She also loves being able to make her own decisions. “While I have a corporation to lean on and bounce ideas off of, I have a PR degree and I’m allowed to be creative,” she explains. “If I want to sponsor a sick child or fishing tournament, or help a local church or organization, I can. I have been successful, so I have to give back…
there’s no other option to me!” A family gal, Misty tied the knot with Peter Whitehead (whom she met 18 years ago) in May of 2018. “We were both pharmaceutical reps,” Misty tells. “However, it wasn’t love at first sight; we were friends for years – strictly friends! It wasn’t until we both found ourselves single adults with two children each that we fell in love,” Misty shares. Peter popped the question in 2017 while heading out to dinner at Camellia Cafe in Fairhope. “He asked me to
dinner and before we left the house, he got down on one knee and asked me,” she says. The pair were wed in Fairhope’s St. James Episcopal Church, and all four children were involved in the intimate ceremony. Their reception followed at The Wash House Restaurant. When it came to blending their families (Peter’s girls, Lauren and Katie, and Misty’s boys, Hudson and Mason) the couple was thrilled to know the children were ready. “Our kids are our first priority...
that’s a big thing Peter and I agree on,” she says. The main challenge was finding enough space for this new family of six to live, so the executive decision to build a home in Point Clear was made. “Courtney Malouf of Malouf Furniture is an amazing designer with impeccable taste,” Misty says. “She was my everything! I was scheduled for back surgery so I literally handed her the whole house. Courtney and my builder, Craig Miller of Craig Homes Inc., worked closely together
to make it perfect and we got in four days prior to my surgery! They were truly a Godsend.” Listing the kitchen as dreamy yet functional, her favorite room features a 12 ft. island for the kids to gather to snack while completing homework. “Having them all home, cooking together, then swimming in the pool is great,” she says. And sharing a nightly family meal is never missed, as Peter is a grill master. “We all flip for Peter’s bacon-wrapped grilled shrimp with homemade BBQ sauce… you could put it on a flip flop and it would taste good,” she jokes. With such a busy life it’s hard to imagine how Misty handles it all, but she shares it all boils down to time management and prioritizing. “Our first priorities are family and God,” Misty explains. “Peter and I have such a strong bond; he’s not only my husband, but also my best friend, and neither of us have an issue with spending time with our own children,” Misty says. “That’s the thing about a blended family and being older: you’re just more secure about life in general. It’s different with a blended family, and the kids need to always be overwhelmed with love. Let’s be honest; they didn't ask to be from a divorced family. We make sure to give lots of one-on-one time, so they feel the love! I’m in the best and most comfortable point in my life. I never dreamed of being this happy and satisfied.” While Misty has had a successful year, her back surgery sticks out the most. Overwhelmed by the love from her family, friends, and staff, she shares, “My mom and sister came from Georgia, and when I say we didn't have to cook for two weeks, I mean it, all thanks to my family and my amazing friends for bringing us dishes! It really made me love my children even more because they all really helped more than I could have imagined. Though a painful time, I fondly recall them all sitting on my bed after school and entertaining me.” Looking ahead, Misty is gearing up to open her two new locations. “I’m in a sweet spot with my restaurants,” she shares. “Ali Hughes, my area manager, is my right hand; she is amazing and wise beyond her years. I also have a management team I absolutely adore. My team is not simply staff – they are family.”

The Noble South & The Wash House The Noble South and The Wash House go hand-in-hand, sharing the same executive chef (Chris Rainosek), general manager (Myles Meade), and the philosophy of incorporating fresh ingredients straight from area farm Local Appetite Growers. Both restaurants were the first to bring the idea of “farm to table upscale cuisine to the Bay area, paving the way for a high standard of fresh cuisine and locally sourced ingredients. allahassee native and general manager of both The Noble South and The Wash House, Myles Meade says he can’t remember not having an interest in the food industry. “I started waiting tables when I was 18 at The Grand Hotel,” he explains. “When I graduated from the University of South Alabama, I wanted to take a year off before applying for medical school, and The Grand Hotel offered me an assistant management job, so I took it. I fell in love, and never looked back.” After spending 13 years in the industry, The Noble South and The Wash House approached him, offering him the role of general manager of both locations. Five years in, he couldn’t be happier. Executive chef of both restaurants and owner of The Noble South Chris Rainosek’s path has been a tad different. Originally from Buffalo, NY, Chris didn’t always have an interest in the food industry, although his first job out of college did involve managing a restaurant in Boulder, Colo. (he says it was just something to do while he figured out his next step). Fast forward to today, and Chris has now been the chef at The Wash House for the past nine years. He even opened his own restaurant, The Noble South, five years ago with his business partner, who just so happens to be the owner of The Wash House. The Wash House features a menu of coastal dishes such as classic seafood gumbo, red fish, fresh catch and more. The atmosphere of The Wash House is extremely intimate with its white tablecloths and candlelit tables. Featuring a wood and stone interior, Chris describes the décor as “almost dark, but very cozy and warm.” Chris describes their food philosophy as serving classic dishes and combinations with a twist but always prepared with integrity. With this philosophy it is no wonder The Wash House has a large customer base, many of whom have become regulars. “We have the best staff and atmosphere for when you have a special occasion in Baldwin County,” Myles says. With bestsellers like their classic 8 oz. filet of beef tenderloin served with mashed potatoes, grilled asparagus, and a béarnaise sauce and their Chateaubriand (one of the most delicious cuts of beef), it can be difficult to choose a favorite dish, which is why Chef Chris jokes that it’s “like choosing between your kids.”
The Noble South is the true definition of “farm to table” cuisine, offering the freshest ingredients cooked with cutting edge techniques by a knowledgeable staff. The atmosphere here is a bit more modern and brighter than The Wash House, but the same exceptional service abounds. The menu changes often, as they only use seasonal ingredients from Local Appetite Growers, who specializes in hydroponic lettuce, leafy greens, and herbs. “We use zero synthetic pesticides or fertilizers on our soil beds, and we grow our field crops on a no-till system with biologically rich soil beds,” says Will Mastin, one of the farmers. “Fresh ingredients give you a head start on your dishes being delicious,” Myles says. “The less a product can be processed, the better it is. When a living and growing thing is harvested it starts to die, so the quicker it can get from the farm to the table, the better. That’s why we choose local. It literally is harvested and comes to the restaurant the same day almost 100 percent of the time,” he adds. “You trust the farmer to bring you their best, and in turn, they trust you to honor their hard work,” adds Chris. Will Mastin adds, “using local ingredients not only provides the consumers with fresher, more nutrient dense produce, it ensures you are buying from a farmer in your area that grows for quality. Local produce is typically much fresher than that found on the wholesale market because it is not sitting for days or weeks.” Because of this, fresh ingredients arrive twice a week ensuring everything is as fresh as possible. And although you can’t go wrong with any dish from the menu, Myles admits his favorite is the Fish of the Day. “Chef Chris and Josh cook fish like no one around,” he boasts. Myles hopes that diners understand what they are trying to with their ever-evolving menu and hope it excites them. “I hope the locals get the itch to come in at least once a month to see what we’re up to on the menu,” he says. “We are inspired by our local farms, so we want to show this in our food.” Ever purveyors of delicious, locally sourced cuisine, The Noble South and the Wash House continue show people what “fresh from the farm” really is, making for an incredible dining experience no matter the season.

The Holy Cooper Trinity Ruth’s Chris Steak House, Felix’s Fish Camp, & BLUEGILL Everyone in the Bay area knows of the Cooper restaurants, all leaders in dining experiences since the late 90s. Each establishment has set a standard for excellent food, even better customer service, and a pristine restaurant, setting them head and shoulders above the rest. By Caroline Edmondson
34 ACCESS Magazine / October 2019
B
rothers David J. Cooper Sr. and Angus R. Cooper originally took over the local Ruth’s Chris Steak House, which has always been a favorite of the Cooper family. Originally owned by another and even set to close, the Cooper brothers were devastated and fought to keep it afloat. David even traveled to New Orleans to speak with Ruth’s Chris founder Ruth Fertel to try and convince him to keep their favorite restaurant in Mobile open. David and Ruth were able to come to an agreement, and thus the first of the Cooper restaurants was born. Today, their businesses include two additional Cooper-founded restaurants on the Bay: Felix’s Fish Camp and BLUEGILL. Each restaurant is unique and offers a variety of different menu items, but all share the same goal of creating a memorable guest experience for anyone who walks through their doors. Ruth’s Chris Steak House is well known for its high-quality selection of steaks, white tablecloths, and luxurious dining experience. Specializing in custom-aged USDA Prime Midwestern beef (the finest 2 percent on the market), Ruth’s Chris broils their steaks exactly the way each diner wants it in order to lock in the flavor. Finished with butter and freshly chopped parsley, each steak is served on a sizzling 500-degree plate to keep your food warm between bites and friendly chatter with your dinner guests. Ruth’s Chris is the perfect place for anniversaries, birthdays, corporate dinners, or just when you’re craving a top-grade, expertly prepared steak.
Felix’s Fish Camp combines the Coopers’ love for steak as well as their love for Mobile’s plentiful seafood. Situated on the Causeway along Mobile Bay, Felix’s has the best views of the sunsets in town, so guests should be sure to arrive in plenty of time to catch the breathtaking scene. Here, diners enjoy fresh Gulf seafood, specialty drinks, and incredible service. Try their famous Turtle Soup, Shrimp & Grits (shrimp sautéed with chives and served in a creamy rosemary sauce with grits), or their Crabmeat Stuffed Fish Fillet (broiled boneless premium white fish fillet with Felix’s delicious Gulf crabmeat stuffing, topped with a ladle of herbed Alfredo sauce). The Cooper’s third restaurant is BLUEGILL, famous for having some of the best entertainment and oysters on the Bay. Try their famous Flaming Oysters (fresh shucked oysters from a flaming hot grill, ladled with a perfect concoction of butter plus a few secret ingredients and drizzled with cheese, all served sizzling to your table), or stick with a classic such as one of their delicious Po-Boys. BLUEGILL also hosts a wide variety of local singers and musicians, making sitting on their patio and enjoying some seafood to the music the best way to spend your day. You can always find a list of upcoming guests on their website.

Original Oyster House Known for its hand-shucked raw, fire-grilled, and baked oysters, the Original Oyster House is the legendary hotspot for fresh Gulf seafood, Southern hospitality, and a spectacular waterfront view. Behind the scenes, this restaurant’s sustainable practices have taken oysters beyond the kitchen to help ensure their future. Becoming the first restaurant in the state to recycle the oyster shell, the Original Oyster House has pledged its environmental allegiance even further by becoming one of the only local restaurants to “oyster garden,” or grow stocker oysters for reef restoration. By Keylee Fillingim & Cecilia Mace
R
ecycling shell and growing oysters to help restore the reef is a champion strategy in preserving this culinary masterpiece. Savory signature dishes like Original Oyster House’s award-winning Fire-Grilled Oysters have locals and tourists alike raving about them and coming back for more. Oyster cams capture the flaming Gulf oysters on the 7 ft. grill at the Causeway location, authenticating their “fresh from the water to the fire” claim. The grill master ladles hand-shucked, plump Gulf oysters in garlic butter, tops them with Parmesan and Romano cheeses, and finishes the dish with a grill-marked, crusty New Orleans-style French bread, which is great for sopping. You can hear the sizzle and smell the charbroiled flavors. The Fire-Grilled Oysters arrive at the table still bubbling hot, perfectly seared, and sizzling with juices. And as you savor this signature dish, you, too, will be supporting the oyster shell recycling program.
In 2016, the Original Oyster House piloted Alabama’s first Oyster Shell Recycling Program through the Alabama Coastal Foundation. The restaurant recycles the oyster shells to help restore the oyster reef, prevent coastal erosion, and help to enhance the oyster, fish, shrimp, and crab populations. As of September 2019, 9.4 million oyster shells have been recovered from participating Gulf Coast restaurants, which amounts to more than 24 acres of oyster shells. But the restaurant’s sustainability endeavors have to start somewhere. With a wide variety of selections, there are plenty of fan favorites and signature dishes to choose from, with all oyster shells rotating directly back into the recycling program. If you prefer variety, the Shell-Shocked Oyster Sampler is a great menu option. This dish features baked Parmesan garlic oysters, fried oysters, and Joe & Dave’s Favorites. The Joe & Dave’s Favorite Oysters are baked with garlic cocktail sauce, Bill-E’s small batch bacon, and grated Parmesan cheese. Not an oyster fan? No problem! Try Josh’s Shrimp and Grits, Mahi Down on Da Bayou, Fisherman’s Pride, succulent Alaskan Snow Crab, Whole Flounder, tacos, pastas, chicken, burgers, Po’ Boys, a fine salad bar, and much more. Southern staples like seasoned turnip greens, seafood gumbo, bread pudding, homemade key lime pie, and the restaurant’s world famous Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter Pie are top crowd picks. The restaurant also offers the Key Lime and Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip whole pies as grab-and-go items from the refrigerator, as well as quarts and half gallons of seafood gumbo. At its Gulf Shores and Spanish Fort Causeway locations, you may also spot the 4 ft. tall sponsored oyster sculptures of the Oyster Trail. Founded in 2013, the Oyster Trail, a project of the Mobile Oyster Gardening Program, is a public art trail that raises awareness for endangered wild oysters. More than 85 percent of oyster reefs have been lost globally. An oyster reef provides an essential habitat for all kinds of marine and plant life, and a healthy oyster population improves the quality of water, which enhances commercial and recreational fishing and ecotourism. Sponsorships of the Oyster Trail help fund oyster gardening, and children, too, can get involved by becoming Oyster Trailblazers and earning an Oyster Shell Recycling tattoo. All they have to do is answer five “true or false” questions on the kid’s menu about oysters. In the Mobile Bay Oyster Gardening Program, volunteers grow oysters in gardens that hang from their piers from June to November. The oysters are collected in November and planted on restoration reefs in Mobile Bay and the Mississippi Sound. This education and research program has planted more than 940,000 oysters since it began in 2001. Last season, more than 120,000 advanced stocker-sized oysters were grown for restoration by volunteer oyster gardeners, some of whom were the Original Oyster House’s very own. From recycling shells, to helping restore the reefs, to giving back to the community, the Original Oyster House is making more than great food – they’re making a difference. So, the next time you’re in Gulf Shores or cutting across the Causeway, be sure to stop by for fresh Gulf seafood complete with a waterfront view at the Original Oyster House, where you, too, may become an Oyster Trailblazer. Talk about sustainability on the half shell!

Tongue & Groove Have you ever dreamed of partying like Gatsby or sipping on forbidden cocktails in a speakeasy during the Prohibition? Well, now is your chance to journey back in time to the 1920s at Fairhope’s speakeasy-style bar, Tongue & Groove Drinkery and Wine Bar. Featuring hand crafted cocktails made with the freshest ingredients and an inviting atmosphere, you’ll feel as glamourous as Gatsby himself. By Caroline Edmondson
38 ACCESS Magazine / October 2019
O
pened in the fall of 2016, Tongue & Groove was owner Dr. James Corte’s first venture into the bar business. After realizing that Fairhope needed an upscale speakeasy-type bar for stylish adults to enjoy handcrafted cocktails and great beer and wine, Dr. Corte decided Tongue & Groove would be the perfect addition to the downtown area. “The space is small yet cozy, so it was better suited to develop a prohibitionstyle speakeasy or secret drinking room,” Dr. Corte shares. The atmosphere is warm, rich, and comfortable, making it the perfect place for after-work beer or wine rounds, and yet elegant enough to host nice events like birthdays or rehearsal parties. “The antique Baldwin oak boards that are on the walls are fashioned together using the tongue and groove method. It describes how our drinks are made: quality ingredients and craftsmanship that you won’t find at most bars,” Dr. Corte shares.
When it comes to the drinks on the menu, Tongue & Groove offers a large selection of specialty cocktails such as Obi-Juan, Lavender Ledia, and Dead Man Walking – just to name a few. Each cocktail is made with the freshest ingredients sourced locally. Their bestselling cocktail is the Old Fashioned (which also happens to be Dr. Corte’s favorite), made with Bullet Rye, Angoaturu Bitters, Orange Bitters, Donurara Syrup, Muddled Cherry, and Muddled Orange. “The Old Fashioned has become the new go-to cocktail in speakeasy bars,” he shares. And although their barman can make nearly anything, Tongue & Groove prefers to make classic cocktails by combining layers of the best spirits and freshly made ingredients and bitters. “Simple one and one (Gin/Tonic) drinks are great, but I want our guests to try something different and yummy and so delicious that as soon as they taste it, they want to know what’s in it, how it’s made, and more importantly, ask, ‘May I have another?’” he jokes. So next time you’re in Fairhope and craving a refreshing drink, keep an eye out for Tongue & Groove’s secret location… you might just miss it.

Authentic Asian cuisine can be hard to find in Southern Alabama, but thanks to Fairhope’s newest restaurant, Wok By d’Bay, natives and tourists alike can enjoy genuine Asian dishes inspired by Owner Joe Ou’s upbringing in China and time spent studying the art in Japan. By Caroline Edmondson Photos Stevye Photography
M
aster Joe Ou’s road to restaurant success has been a lengthy one, having crossed the world over to settle in his new home of Fairhope, Ala., in the early 2000s, where he recently opened Wok By d’Bay on Fairhope Avenue. But Joe says he hasn’t always been known as a Sushi Master, or “Joe,” for that matter. Born in China as Xian C. Ou, Joe (as we know him) began his career as a pediatrician in China. However, due to unforeseen financial strain, Joe ultimately left the medical field and made the decision to move to Japan in order to learn how to become a true Sushi Master. He rigorously studied under a formal sushi program for 10 years, spending four to five of those years simultaneously putting in long hours at a nearby sushi restaurant in order to make the money needed to survive. After some time, Joe realized working in this particular restaurant wasn’t where he wanted to be, so he packed his bags and decided to move to the U.S. in order to chase the American dream.
After touching down in New York, Joe adopted his new name in order to make it easier for people to pronounce in his new country. Despite not knowing any English, Joe worked for years in sushi restaurants in Chinatown while taking classes at Queens College in order to learn the language, but was disheartened by the cost difference of college between those that possessed green cards and those that didn’t. Where a green card holder would pay $1000 for a whole school year, Joe was being forced to pay $1000 every month, thereby making it financially impossible for him to make his way back to the medical field he had once loved in China. But a new love was on the horizon, as Joe met and fell in love with his wife, Karen, during his time in the Big Apple. The pair later decided they should move elsewhere to raise their future children and, as fate would have it, stumbled upon their opportunity in 1999 when a friend invited Joe to Alabama to work with him. It was then that Joe got his first taste of “Southern living,” and after later visiting Fairhope in 2005, Karen and Joe felt they had found their “forever home.” The two fell in love with the quiet charm of Fairhope and found it to be the perfect place to start a family. Joe, however, found it slightly shocking that Fairhope had no authentic sushi restaurants to offer, ultimately prompting him to open his first restaurant, Master Joe’s Sushi, in March of 2009. As soon as the doors to Master Joe’s opened, sushi-lovers from all over the Bay area flocked in, devouring his delicious cuisine in droves. Master Joe’s remains one of the Eastern Shore’s most precious jewels and is a staple of the Fairhope community. But Joe’s genius didn’t stop there. In November of 2018 he opened Wok By d’Bay with the specific intent to offer a pan fusion/hibachi/sushi restaurant modeled after New York Metro style restaurants – not too big; just good food and service. With menu items ranging from classics like Pad Thai, General Tso’s and Kung Pao chicken, and super-fresh Summer Rolls and Gyoza, the restaurant seemingly offers all of the staples, plus a few more exciting fusion dishes like seared scallops served with watermelon, avocado cream, crispy potatoes, and cilantro, as well as Kimchi and Poke bowls. A beautifully designed Zen-like space, this neutral toned, casual-yet-upscale eatery is lined with booths for both intimate and celebratory meals, as well as your simple Thursday night supper. If dining alone, cool counter seating offers front row sushi rolling views and a wonderful wine display. Joe wisely created an additional private room to accommodate approximately 25 guests, complete with a state-of-the-art sound system, screen, and projector. With both Fairhope establishments thriving with local crowds, Joe and his staff hope to show area tourists the fabulous food scene Fairhope has to offer. With Joe currently owning four different restaurants along the Bay (each one offering dishes that are not available elsewhere), we are grateful Joe found his own personal slice of paradise in Fairhope!

Bone & Barrel Checking all the boxes for a guaranteed good meal and even better time, The Bone and Barrel is a local favorite that never disappoints. Raising the food bar with mouth watering fare and cutting-edge cocktails, this gastropub is where it’s at. By Hayley Hill
E
veryone knows “The Bone” has one of the most happening outdoor patios scenes in the area. Complete with fun bands, high-end cocktails, and assorted brews, it’s that place where everyone knows your name (Yes, that’s a “Cheers” reference). With no Sam Malone similarities, owners Noell Broughton and Bobby Kilpatrick are local semi-celebrities. Don’t believe us? Google the movie “Limo Ride.” Characters in their own rights, catch them if you can as they dart through the crowds.
42 ACCESS Magazine / October 2019
Longtime friends, Noell and Bobby wanted to open a restaurant together ever since they can remember. In 2015 they launched The Bone in downtown Fairhope and haven’t looked back. With a knack for thrifting, Bobby affectionately refers to the Bone’s vibe as “nostalgically rusty.” Nostalgia in the form of cassette tapes used as a chair rail along the back wall, cool black and white pics of rock and roll legends, and random treasures that remind you of days gone by line the walls of the ever-crowded establishment.

Noell is also quite the restaurateur, claiming Fairhope’s newcomer The Little Whiskey Christmas Club with Bobby, the Lucky Irish Pub & Grill in both Saraland and Mobile, and Mobile’s Brickyard as well. Whether you’re seeking lunch, dinner, or a place to catch the game, good grub is always in order. Rest assured, Bobby and Noell take food seriously. And while it could possibly be categorized as “bar food” or “pub grub,” it’s so much more. With fresh ingredients from sprouts to spinach and everything in between, the main ingredient is love, which is clearly stated on the menu. The team works hard to elevate what some might consider un-elevatable. Think juicy ribs smothered in BBQ sauce and then fried. Yes, fried ribs. Go it alone – you won’t want to share. Or, how about hummus with roasted red peppers and goat cheese? If sharing, take big scoops, as it won’t last long.
The salads are always fresh and full of crisp super greens, not soggy iceberg. There are classics like their killer chicken sandwich big enough to feed a family of five, and then – oh man – there’s the burgers… and the Po’boys… and Bobby’s favorite, the Spider Sandwich, which consists of two soft shell crabs fried crisp and dressed with fresh lemon. There’s also the Seared Ahi Tuna Sandwich served with crisp cucumbers and a wasabi aioli. Talk about flavor town! And while you won’t have room, get a dessert to go because they are overwhelmingly decadent and delicious. Proud and passionate about creating great food, Bobby credits his success to his early days. “Washing dishes at Original Bens Jr. in 1990 was my first service industry job, and I’m beyond thankful it was my introduction to this world,” Bobby says. “Bubba and Rise’ were (and still are) like my work parents. I’m so lucky!”
The Bone and Barrel 311 Fairhope Avenue, Fairhope 251.990.0782
It’s clear Bobby and Noell have carried on the tradition of creating work families, and naturally extend it to all their guests. With each member of their staff going above and beyond, it’s like sharing a meal or cocktails with your friends or family. If you’re having a special occasion, their team will go to great lengths to ensure success from set up to shut down. In full transparency, this is an ACCESS fave. Why? After all is said and done, it comes down to Southern hospitality, and The Bone has it by the barrelful.

Dumbwaiter Restaurant
Dumbwaiter has been a staple in “good eats” for both Mobile and Fairhope, having paved the way for an influx of fine dining in downtown Mobile. In sticking to its roots, this restaurant showcases the fine Southern cuisine owner Wes Lambert grew up with. By Caroline Edmondson
W
es Lambert, owner of Dumbwaiter Restaurant, was born and raised in Mobile where he says he was raised on Southern comfort food and fresh seafood straight from our local waters. That’s why he and wife, Dana, decided that opening a restaurant to showcase this amazing cuisine was the perfect venture. “I took a chance and made it a reality,” Wes says of first opening his flagship restaurant in March of 2015. Wes knew that his restaurant belonged in Downtown Mobile where, at the time, it was lacking an upscale, Southern-style dining experience, so he set out to secure a location. Wes found the perfect spot in an 1830s-era building right off Bienville Square and sought the expertise of local artisans and tradesmen to bring the building back to life, ultimately transforming the space into his dream venue. “They were able to craft the atmosphere inside Dumbwaiter to reflect the ambience of the city just outside of its doors,” Wes beams. When it comes to the menu, Dumbwaiter delivers classic Southern dishes with its own unique flavors, often having been described by diners as “Southern heritage cooking with a coastal flair.” Dumbwaiter takes pride in using only locally and regionally sourced high-quality, fresh ingredients. This can be seen in one of its bestselling dishes, the Hook to Table, which is made up of fresh fish, cheddar grits, bacon caramelized green beans, and Conecuh shrimp sauce. Another bestseller is the Tensaw Tournedos, a dish of twin 4 oz. filet medallions, grilled shrimp, goat cheese scallion mashed potatoes, and grilled asparagus covered in bourbon peppercorn sauce. “These dishes are staples and are always fresh and consistent,” Wes says. Adding to its original location in Downtown Mobile, Dumbwaiter now holds a spot in the heart of Fairhope as well. Wes says his favorite part about his job is being able to make great food day after day and meeting even greater people in the process. “I just want to thank everyone who has supported us since day one,” he says. “We are very blessed to have such great clientele.”

TEXARBAMA BBQ
Traditional, Texas, and barbecue – three words that perfectly sum up Fairhope’s newest hidden smokehouse gem, TexarBama BBQ. Tucked in an ally in Downtown Fairhope, this joint is serving up juicy, delicious meats the great state of Texas itself would envy. / By Caroline Edmondson
wner/Pitmaster of TexarBama BBQ Bradley Parmer is an expert when it comes to authentic Texas barbecue. Hailing from Central Texas, Bradley says the barbecue there is on a whole other level – a level he has worked tirelessly to achieve in his own business. Cooking out every weekend for years in his home state, Bradley gained quite the following over time as friends, family, and even strangers flocked to his house to taste his famous brisket. After moving to his current home of Fairhope, Ala., Bradley met fellow barbecue lover Casey Carrigan, and the two joined forces to continue the tradition of smoking meats and perfecting the craft. “We formed ‘First Saturday Backyard Barbecues’ and word of mouth quickly spread,” Bradley says. “At about our sixth monthly barbecue, we had around 100 people showing up. Casey and I looked at each other and said, ‘This is it; let’s do it.’”
The men met with Will Carlton who told them of an empty building in the warehouse district of Fairhope where he was looking to incorporate their BBQ trailer into it. Bradley and Casey loved it and got to work with their designs. “I spent most of my career in architecture and building and had a vision to build a Texas Icehouse-type venue – a bar with food trailers outside,” Bradley explains. “With Casey’s help, I designed and built for several months as our vision came to fruition. It is now called ‘District Hall.’ We originally parked our trailer here and reopened our doors on March 9th, 2018, and hit the ground running,” Bradley says. After three months slinging BBQ at District Hall, they quickly ran out of space and decided to expand, looking for a more permanent structure. Now they are located where the old Gumbo Shack used to be in downtown Fairhope.
With financial assistance from friends and family, Bradley and Casey built their barbecue trailer, ultimately opening for business on March 9, 2018. “At the time, we were staying up all night smoking 150 pounds of Brisket and Pork on our hand-built offset smoker,” Bradley shares. “My hours were roughly 4 p.m. to 9 a.m., and then Casey would take over from 9 a.m. until we opened. There was a lot of lost sleep during these times. I guess you can call it paying our dues,” Bradley jokes. After three long months, the men invested in a Texas Oyler (an all woodfired rotisserie smoker) made by J&R Manufacturing out of Mesquite, Texas. The Texas Oyler is not assisted by propane or electrics; instead, one must start a fire and manage it throughout the week. “We were thrilled with this purchase because it allowed us to continue doing barbecue the traditional way and allotted us a few extra hours of sleep every night,” Bradley says. With a Texas Oyler in tow, Bradley and Casey decided their next move was to open a brick and mortar location in Downtown Fairhope, and thus the search for the perfect spot commenced.
Walking through the doors of TexarBama, one steps into a slice of Texas, immediately inundated with intoxicating smells, Honky Tonk music, and a laid-back atmosphere, making one feel as if plopped right in the middle of the Lone Star state. “I miss Texas, so that’s why I created a little piece of it here,” Bradley shares. Naturally, their bestselling menu item is their brisket, hands down. Customers claim you can’t get brisket like TexarBama’s anywhere this side of the Mississippi River. “A lot of time was spent searching out the best of the best for our brisket,” Bradley says. “The meat comes from Creekstone Farms in Arkansas City, Kansas, where one out of 100 cattle is chosen for their program. Temple Grandin, an animal welfare activist, actually designed their slaughterhouse to assure that the cattle were slaughtered in the most humane way, which is very important in picking quality beef. She observed that cattle never make 90-degree turns in pastures and went on to design a spiraling pen to gradually bring the cattle to slaughter. Creekstone even goes as far as pumping the smell from the kill floor to the other end of the building to insure that the cattle are as relaxed as possible before slaughter. This results in a top-quality Black Angus beef comparable to no other. Animal stress is a big factor in meat.” Ultimately, both Casey and Bradley love their job, saying it’s the smiles and sounds they hear coming from customers as they experience the “umami” feeling that make their job worth it. “You can have a stressful day and all it takes is for someone to take the time to tell you how much they enjoyed what we work so hard to do and your day is brightened immediately,” Bradley says. So, to experience real Texas barbecue right here in the heart of South Alabama, just follow your nose. You’ll be glad you did!

The Hope Farm The phrase “farm to table” can be a loose one, often referring to restaurants who source their ingredients from independent local farms not connected to their own eateries. Bentley Evans, CEO and co-founder of The Hope Farm, is rethinking this term by creating an urban farm and wine bar in which he plans to combine his love for small-scale farming and fresh, on-the-spot ingredients for his fine cuisine and cocktails to create a unique dining experience in the heart of Fairhope. By Caroline Edmondson Photo Stevye Photography
P
rojected to open in April of 2020, The Hope Farm is the brainchild of Bentley Evans and his father, Robert Evans, having been conceived by a decision to couple Robert’s passion for wine and Bentley’s love for growing food to open a business together. The Hope Farm will allow guests to enjoy a tranquil environment with modern farming, dining, and social experiences featuring a uniquely crafted wine list, fresh “garden to glass” cocktails, and shared plates made with ingredients sourced directly from the farm and local purveyors. “Our goal is to provide a special
space for our community where families and friends can come together and experience hope,” Bentley shares. This goal played a large role in choosing The Hope Farm’s Fairhope location, as Bentley and Robert love living in Fairhope and wish to make a positive impact on their community. “Fairhope is a very progressive town and we believe that this concept will be well-received,” Bentley says. “This idea of knowing where your food comes from and feeling connected to the people that are producing it is something special and we want to provide that for them,” he adds.
What makes The Hope Farm so unique is the idea that almost all the ingredients for their menu come from the produce grown on the farm. The Hope Farm uses an environmentally conscious farming method called hydroponics, which allows the farm to grow produce 365 days a year by controlling the environment its plants are grown in. “We will still be using raised beds to grow heartier vegetables on the farm. However, for our lettuces, leafy greens and herbs, we will be utilizing repurposed shipping containers that have been outfitted with state-of-the-art hydroponic systems,” Bentley says. “I chose this hydroponic method of farming for three main reasons: 1) Water usage: More than 90 percent LESS water is used per crop than in traditional agriculture; 2) The ability to control the environment: There is no use of pesticides! There is an efficient use of nutrients by the plants and the plants grow faster and healthier; and 3) Space requirements: With hydroponic farming, in a 400 sq. ft. shipping container we are given a unique opportunity to grow vertically, thus maximizing our plants per square foot to grow more in less space, all while only taking up 400 sq. ft. of land,” Bentley explains. The Hope Farm will be growing various greens, herbs, seasonal vegetables, and fruits, but the farm’s main crop (and the one Bentley is most excited about) is its gourmet mushrooms that are almost never found locally on a consistent basis. “I would have to attribute my interest in growing mushrooms to my great friend, Allen, and my Uncle Kipp,” Bentley says. “They introduced me to the fascinating world of fungi. I love mushrooms because they are extremely versatile, which gives us the ability to use them in many different applications. We will use them in many of our food offerings, as well as in some fun cocktails – especially our Bloody Mary!” Although The Hope Farm is intentional about not labeling the style of its cuisine, one thing is for certain: each dish will utilize produce grown on the farm for the freshest ingredients and pull from multi-cultural techniques for a diverse selection of seasonal variety. And for those ingredients The Hope Farm cannot grow such as meats, seafood, cheeses, and some seasonal vegetables, they will be sourcing from local purveyors. And don’t forget about their amazing wine bar, with pairings perfect for any dish on the menu. “Our objective is to elevate the wine culture in our community through the offering of an eclectic and diverse wine list with new and old-world selections for any novice or advanced wine drinker to enjoy,” Bentley shares. “We want to place an emphasis on wine education in order to enhance the guests’ experience while at The Hope Farm.”

Best Beach Restaurant: Fisher’s at Orange Beach Marina
On January 10, 2018, the doors of The Cheese Cottage on St. Louis Street in Mobile officially opened, thus bringing life to the newly renovated space. Once no more than a jagged concrete slab and gas station, the eatery was “Cinderella’d” seemingly overnight to showcase an old world, loosely Mediterranean/French/Italian style. But it’s not the architecture that has the customers coming in in droves – no, it’s their specialty cheese. You can see it in their menu, their cheese case, and their passion. Having partnered with local farms and creameries, The Cheese Cottage sources not only cheeses, but quality ingredients for their sandwiches, salads, and cheeseboards as well. Helping to grow a sense of community, they are devoted to helping to expand the palates of their guests and prove that cheese doesn’t always come pre-sliced and orange.

While Executive Chef Bill Briand’s creative riffs on Southern coastal cuisine consistently rake in praise from national media and earn prestigious award nods, you’ll find so much more than great food at Fisher’s. It starts with two distinct dining experiences in one spot: the backwater breezes and relaxed vibe in the open-air Dockside, and the sophisticated décor of the fine-dining space, Upstairs. Each has its own menu and personality, but they share a common thread: the “y’all come” warmth that owner Johnny Fisher has pushed since Day 1. It continues with their attention to detail in every dish, where Chef Bill’s thoughtful yet innovative approach to classic flavors and emphasis on local produce and just-caught Alabama Gulf seafood shine in every bite. Round it out with stellar, sincere service, and you’re in for the perfect beachside dining experience.
With their intimate restaurants, small staff, and creative chefs, Randy and Sherri Williams of Red or White have created an atmosphere unlike any other. Finding that perfect home in a great neighborhood that ticks all your boxes can be difficult. We’re talking safe and fun for kids, mature trees, a home with those oh-so-desirable custom touches, and more. Knowing what families want, the team behind The Verandas in Fairhope is committed to building a unique oasis for local families to call home. With VIP access, we took a tour of their breathtaking Showcase Home. By Caroline Edmondson // Photos Stevye Photography
ABOUT THE VERANDAS
The Verandas is a breathtaking new neighborhood in Fairhope built on an expansive parcel of Baldwin County farmland. This neighborhood offers build-to-suit homes by custom home builders to ensure every home meets its future owners’ needs and desires. Families, first-time buyers, retirees, and those simply seeking new, upscale homes are welcome here. The Verandas features luxurious amenities such as a neighborhood pool for those hot summer days, fully stocked ponds for the fisherman (or woman) at heart, fruit trees for residents to pick delicious in-season fruits, and multiple beautifully landscaped common areas to kick back and relax with friends, family, and new neighbors. Bonus: Home dwellers are close to nearly all of Fairhope’s amenities and attractions.
THE TEAM
Well-known prestigious developers and partners for The Verandas, Trae Corte and Bruce Bigler are truly visionaries. They have teamed with Wise Living Real Estate, Michelle Bigler and Wendy Gavras to market the neighborhood adding experience and creativity. “I was looking for a site to develop a custom home neighborhood, so I started looking for land that was not surrounded by existing neighborhoods,” Trae shares. “This property stood out to me, as the terrain has rolling hills, large live oaks, and is set in a quiet country setting, yet close to Mobile. Its sense of community truly makes The Verandas a wonderful place to live and enjoy life in our beautiful part of the country,” Trae adds. For Bruce, “When Trae first approached me with the project more than two years ago, we walked the property full of beautiful old oak trees and discussed the vision of having a unique custom-built neighborhood that encompasses the Fairhope lifestyle. It's exciting to see it come to life,” Bruce says. To date, the team has completed the first two phases which encompasses 77 lots across 44 acres with two stocked lakes, fruit orchards, and an abundance of greenspace. “Our lifestyle neighborhood will continue to expand throughout the next three phases starting in 2020,” Bruce says. “We have more unique ideas for the remaining 178 acres that includes everything from greenspace footpaths and biking trails to a village area and even some five acre lots,” he adds. Additionally, Bruce and Trae recognize and know the importance of a woman’s voice in the home buying process. Enter Michelle Bigler. “Not only am I involved in the design process of future phases and homes, but I’m also the Realtor for the showcase home, and helped with the planning and staging of the model and Showcase Home,” Michelle says. “I know how important the right appliances and smart features are to our clients! Additionally, we truly want everyone to know how special The Verandas is, so marketing, social media, and event planning are all a huge part of my job,” she adds.

BREAKING GROUND
Eric Craig of Eric Craig Homes was entrusted in constructing The Verandas’ Showcase Home, as he’s been in the building and construction business for the past 17 years. Eric is a true professional, having built everything from complete construction and additions to full remodels. After meeting with developers Bruce Bigler and Trae Corte and hearing their vision of a high-end custom home subdivision, Eric was convinced The Verandas was the perfect place to build the Showcase Home for the Baldwin County Home Builders Association’s Parade of Homes. “Not only was the subdivision in a beautiful country setting, but it also had all the amenities to make it the perfect community,” he shares. Eric’s style can be described as modern rustic, with a touch of industrial achieved with textured layers – something Eric believes made him the perfect candidate for the job, as The Verandas is one of the few true custom neighborhoods in the area. Last November, Eric started planning the perfect home. “My criteria was to build a one story open floor plan with a large outdoor area for entertaining. I compiled a list of ideas and worked with Coastal Design Group to come up with a perfect plan,” he says. Next, Eric worked closely with Stephanie Minter of Stephanie Minter Design to fine tune his ideas. “She and I put together a special home filled with smart features, an old growth Cyprus beam porch, hammered truss beams in the kitchen/living area, iron front doors, shiplap walls, painted wood ceilings, three fireplaces, and a dog wash,” Eric shares. The master bedroom features suspended beams, a built-in mantel with wall sconces, and a private screened-in sitting area. Inspired Closets of Mobile designed the master closet and pantry. The kitchen has pecky Cyprus accent cabinets with
Eric Craig
white GE Café appliances, a dual faucet multipurpose food prep sink, and a wet bar. Eric’s favorite part of the home is the outdoor kitchen, perfect for grilling out, and the living area with its wood burning fireplace for those chilly coastal nights. “This home embodies the craftsmanship and style of what the neighborhood is trying to achieve,” Eric says. “I’m proud of all the unique features and textures Stephanie and I used to give the home an authentic, modern industrial feel.”
DECORATED TO PERFECTION
Once built, it was time to enlist the help of the master decorators from Malouf Furniture. Gardner Malouf, the store’s owner, has lived a life centered around furniture, as his grandfather originally opened the store in 1946 in Greenwood, Miss. “It was a booming time in Mississippi,” Gardner explains. “The area did not have a quality furniture store so, being from a family of merchants, my grandfather opened one. The store is still there and has a reputation for quality furniture and great customer service,” Gardner shares. After his grandfather, Gardner’s father took over and opened a store in Foley. He then created a line of high-design lighting, accessories, mirrors, botanicals, and even furniture, and today their products can be found all over the U.S. These days, Gardner holds the reins of the store, something he takes great pride in. “It means everything to me to know what he stood for and to make sure I live up to that standard every day,” Gardner shares. Confirming the importance of family, Gardner’s wife Courtney is also a key member of the business. With a strong clientele across the Bay, she shares, “As a design team we always listen to the client and what their needs are. No exceptions; that’s where it starts. From there it’s designing their lifestyle and reaching the goals of the clients.” This philosophy is exactly why Malouf Furniture was perfect to complete The Verandas’ Showcase Home.
A perfect match, Malouf Furniture Sales Manager Jeremy Brock shares, “The beautiful new neighborhood brings casual upscale living with a focus on community and nature. We care about the community and want our clients to truly enjoy the space they call home,” he says. Jeremy and his team at Malouf toured the home before it was completed to create an initial plan. “We could immediately see the theme and began making our selections,” he says. “We love the grand ceiling heights and amazing architectural elements throughout.” The style that emerged was “Transitional Casual Comfort,” which incorporated clean lines, rustic touches, and a pop of contemporary throughout, all mixing effortlessly to create an environment that is both comfortable and stylish. Jeremy says his favorite piece in the home has to be the beautiful Credenza in the dining room from the John Richard collection. “It’s an amazing piece that highlights art by Carol Benson Cobb,” he shares. Jeremy says the process of designing this home has been a lot of fun, as they enjoy large projects, putting together an interior design idea, and making it come to life. Ashley Huffmaster, their merchandising manager, was integral in making this a success. She shares, “This was done fairly quickly, but we have the ability to complete just about any look with a quick turnaround.” Thanks to Malouf Furniture, the Showcase Home displays the idyllic lifestyle the team has worked so hard to create.

I n t e l l ige nc e Long-gone are the kitchen nightmares of Formica countertops and avocado appliances. The nation’s obsession with custom kitchens leaves us with endless options, each one better than the next. But how to choose? Here, Stone Interiors owner Angela Weil gives us a 101 on all things stone. The good news? With the holidays fast approaching, there is still plenty of time to update the heart of your home for the festivities. If you fear wine stains or having to deal with a high maintenance surface, read on! By Angela Weil
WHICH MATERIAL IS BEST FOR YOU?
With more options than ever before when it comes to kitchen and bathroom surfaces, quartzite, marble, granite, and engineered quartz are the four most desirable materials for any homeowner looking to improve functionality, beauty, and home value.
MARBLE
This is a classic option for counters, backsplashes, shower walls, and tub surrounds. A soft stone, marble is susceptible to staining and etching, a dullness that appears in reaction to citrus and acidic liquids. Extra precautions like coasters and daily cleaning are recommended. Honed Marble is perfect for those that love the look of marble but are concerned about the maintenance. A honed marble is essentially pre-etched, so it doesn’t reveal stains as easily as polished marble. It has a soft, satin finish that’s well-suited for a kitchen island or bathroom vanity.
64 ACCESS Magazine / October 2019
QUARTZITE
It used to be difficult to quarry due to its hardness, but in recent years has become more accessible for homeowners. With a translucent look similar to marble, it is much more durable. Once it’s sealed, quartzite is both stainand scratch-resistant, and is nearly impervious to day-to-day spills and the hazards of a busy kitchen.
GRANITE
A 100 percent natural stone, granite requires sealing in order to be stain resistant, but it’s easy to care for once installed. Perhaps the most family-friendly material, granite tolerates extremely high heat, is very durable, and requires nothing more than mild dish detergent and a soft cloth to be cleaned. Available in a wide array of colors, granite ranges in price and adds to the overall home value.
ENGINEERED QUARTZ
This manmade material is available in vibrant hues and high-contrast patterns. Quartz slabs are visually consistent, since the colors and patterns are manufactured. Easy to clean and stain-resistant, it is susceptible to heat. Trivets are recommended to protect quartz surfaces from hot pots and pans.
DELUXE BACKSPLASH TRENDS Specialty finishes are growing in popularity, such as crackle finish for a handmade look, or glamorous mirrored and metallic colors. Decorative tiles with elaborate patterns add interest to any space. Make any space look larger and more luxurious with ceiling-height tile.
Angela Weil
INSTALLATION DETAILS: After selecting your stone, a trained Measure Technician will measure your space for an accurate quote. Our fabricators use laser-measuring tools for ultimate precision. From there, trained stone fabricators will shape the stone with your chosen finish and edge profile. We use a combination of hand-fabrication work and cutting-edge CNC technology to create perfectly straight lines, consistent edge profiles, and minimal seams. On the installation date, keep in mind the installers need a clear path. Installing countertops is a true construction project, as one granite slab can weigh more than 1,000 lbs.! Also, very importantly, we are accredited by the Natural Stone Institute – one of the most respected organizations in the industry.
WHAT WILL IT COST? We will give you a custom quote based on the type of material, size of the job, and other variables. Some materials may be priced by the square foot, while others, such as special-order materials, may need to be purchased by the slab. Any granite, marble, quartzite, or engineered quartz countertop will most certainly improve your home value. All are long-lasting, and potential homebuyers consider them an upgrade. Among these options, granite tends to be the most affordable, starting at around $40 PSF. Marble and quartz both tend to be higher-priced, averaging around $50 PSF. Quartzite tops sit at the high end, starting at $60 PSF. But because quartzite is incredibly durable and visually beautiful, it’s a worthy investment for your home.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE? Installation can typically be completed in one day. But while it’s hypothetically possible to get a new countertop installed in less than a week, homeowners should plan for the process to take about four weeks due to the fact that any busy stone shop typically has jobs scheduled weeks in advance.

YOUTH QU E ST B E AU T Y
In my flawless-faced younger days, I swore to age gracefully. Having promised not to give in to the pressures of perfection, I’d like to slap that naive young me in the head. In a world obsessed with youth and beauty, trying to age with the flow is brutal at best. As my primary caregiver, Dr. Clare Carney stepped in to chat about her aesthetic services, finally prompting me to hit the front lines in my battle de’ maturity. By Hayley Hill
I
n practice for many years and with Alabama Medical Group since 2016, Clare K. Carney M.D., PhD is a youth seeker’s dream. “My goal with aesthetics is to enhance beauty and soften the effects of aging while still leaving some movement, so it is more natural,” she shares. I was surprised to learn you can’t use Botox below the nose due to the many small muscles in that area. For the lower face where laugh lines appear, fillers are best. So, basically, I needed Botox and fillers. Having covered the beauty business for years, I know who you choose is key. With a face full of stickers marking my injection sites, I was beyond impressed with Dr. Carney’s process, as the wrong placement can sabotage results and cause the eyelids to droop, possible paralysis, or worse. “I start by listening to what is bothering the client and then we discuss ways to achieve their goals,” Dr. Carney says. “I make sure their expectations are reasonable and work hard to make the process as comfortable as possible by using a local anesthetic and ice, all while talking them through the process. I’m a little OCD about placement and take time to ensure I place the products exactly where I want them. I use stickers for Botox injections, so I have a good idea of outcome prior to starting the injections, and I truly enjoy the process,” she adds. As someone who puts makeup on in the car while on speaker phone, I don’t spend much time in the

mirror. But in taking a good look at my face with Dr. Carney, I couldn’t get injected fast enough. Apparently, I’ve had a lot of laughs. My secret sauce? “For Hayley, I did Botox to alleviate forehead and frown line wrinkles, as well as a touch of a brow lift,” she explains. “We also placed volume on her cheeks, with two syringes (one on each side) for volume loss. I also placed Vollure to soften her parenthesis [laugh lines], utilized Ultra XC to reduce the marionette lines around her mouth, and used Volbella to plump her lips gently,” Dr. Carney shares. While I wasn’t nervous, a mild panic set in once faced with the needles. No stranger to Botox, the cheek fillers and lip injections terrified me. Dr. Carney proceeded with care and the pain was minimal at best. “Don’t be afraid of aesthetics,” Dr. Carney says. “I think a lot of women are afraid of the pain, and there are parts that do hurt, but usually not as badly as expected. I also think people think it makes them less of a person if they are enhancing themselves. They don’t want to be thought of as ‘plastic’ or ‘narcissistic,’ but feeling good about your appearance is a great self-esteem boost,” she adds. In agreement, the self-esteem boost for me has been miraculous! I love my cheek bones and have been regularly complimented on how refreshed I look. After asking how long I can expect to look 10 years younger, Dr. Carney explains, “Botox lasts
anywhere from four to six months, and fillers can last six months to one year. Lip fillers tend to wear off faster (as we use our lip muscles frequently), whereas the cheek-enhancing fillers last longer.” Well over a month out from my treatment, I’m thrilled. In addition to her top-notch aesthetic skills, I was comforted by the fact that Dr. Carney is a highly qualified physician. “The biggest advantage of seeing me for aesthetics (other than telling your spouse you simply have a doctor’s appointment), is that oftentimes other issues arise that can be addressed,” she says. True, as she also reminded me that I was due for a B-12 shot that she promptly administered. As for her prices, Dr. Carney is right on target with most aesthetic businesses and often offers specials. However, experience and an artistic approach far outweigh saving a few bucks, and I have the face to prove it.

Every woman desires a clear complexion - often spending thousands of dollars on luxury skincare products that promise to help her achieve blemish-free skin – all to no avail. A revolutionary skin treatment called Photorejuvenation is now helping women achieve the skin they want by treating signs of aging, all while being minimally invasive and boasting few side effects. Dr. Jill Ringold, M.D., of Greater Mobile Laser & Aesthetic Center explains the process and its many benefits. By Caroline Edmondson
S
un damage (which includes freckling, crepiness and wrinkling) affects thousands of women all over the world, often leading to a loss of self-confidence. Thankfully, Photorejuvenation (a skin treatment which utilizes a laser) can help this sun damage and transform an uneven complexion into a beautiful bright glow. Once an appointment is made with Dr. Jill Ringold, the patient should avoid sun exposure/tanning beds and self-tanners for at least two to four weeks before the treatment. Patients must also discontinue use of any retinoids at least five days prior. On the day of the treatment, the patient’s skin is prepped and proper protective eyewear is given. A cooling device is used to make the treatment comfortable, as the laser will heat the skin adequately to gain the desired effect. The patient will experience a warm sensation as the laser passes over the skin. Once completed, aloe is applied to calm the skin. Immediate redness is to be anticipated with a “sunburn” sensation for possibly up to an hour post treatment. For facial Photorejuvenation, one can expect 7-10 days of a “peppery” look, where pigmented areas were most noticeable prior to laser treatment. With chest Photorejuvenation, one can expect this “peppery” look for up to two weeks. During this period of post care, makeup can be worn but no retinoids/exfoliants or topical Vitamin C can be applied. After healing, patients will see an overall healthier and brighter complexion with improved texture. Dr. Ringold suggests that most patients undergo this treatment twice a year to maintain optimal results, and with proper sun protection, patients should be able to uphold an overall healthier appearance for years to come.

We Say More? Microneedling is all the rage recently thanks to social media platforms such as Instagram and YouTube, though many would be surprised to learn that the technique has actually been around since the early 90s. This minimally invasive procedure can improve the look of scars, boost collagen, and encourage hair growth, and with so many benefits, Dr. Kimberly Donnellan of Providence Medical Group is here to give us the lowdown on this revolutionary skin treatment.
A
By Caroline Edmondson
Dr. Donnellan recommends three treatments spaced four to six weeks apart, while the most dramatic benefits are seen at six months post-procedure. “We have received such tremendous feedback from our patients after the procedure,” she says. “They report getting numerous compliments on their skin, and almost everyone schedules a subsequent procedure. The downtime and pain related to the procedure is much less than many more aggressive procedures that offer similar outcomes. This treatment seems to be a real breakthrough in skin care and is likely to continue to be one of our most popular treatments.”

re you plagued by fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, large pores, pigmentation, or general facial aging? Microneedling may be your answer. Chances are you’ve already heard of it or seen the mesmerizing (albeit bloody) videos of the treatment in action posted by celebrities such as Kim Kardashian and Angelina Jolie. And although this treatment can look painful and scary at first, it actually boasts very minimal pain and discomfort, making it one of the most popular treatments available today. Microneedling involves inserting fine, short needles into the skin, only going surface-level deep, which patients describe as feeling more like a pinprick than a shot. These needles create micro-channels that allow the skincare treatment to absorb deeper into the skin and helps kickstart the healing process by acting as “mini injuries” in order to stimulate collagen rejuvenation and produce elastin. “The most significant change is an increase in the collagen of the skin,” says Dr. Kimberly Donnellan of Providence Medical Group. “One reason our skin ages is that there is a loss of collagen over time. This change leads to wrinkles in the skin. This procedure is one of the few that make a noticeable difference in pore size. Also, scarring (whether from acne or trauma) is improved,” Dr. Donnellan adds. Before undergoing the treatment, some minor prep is involved. Patients must hold all retinol treatments for several days prior and avoid skin treatments such as lasers and chemical peels for several weeks before their appointment. Once in the chair, Dr. Donnellan cleans the skin thoroughly and applies a topical anesthetic, letting it sit for roughly 30 minutes in order to make the treatment as painless as possible. A hyaluronic acid is then applied to allow the microneedle cartridge to glide smoothly over the skin. “We select the appropriate needle depth and number of passes required to properly treat concerns based upon a patient’s individual skin health and skin regimen,” Dr. Donnellan explains. “The Collagen P.I.N. can be used on the face, neck, décolletage, hands, scars, and stretch marks.” Immediately after the treatment, Dr. Donnellan says a typical patient will feel tightness for 24 to 48 hours and be instructed to apply a hyaluronic acid ointment periodically for 24 hours, avoiding all other skin care for 24 hours. “The skin takes approximately seven days to undergo the epidermal changes. There is initial redness, followed by some flaking and peeling of skin,” she says.

From Surviving
t o t h r i v i ng As most can imagine, a woman going through breast cancer treatment comes out the other side tired of endless doctor appointments, exhausted from all the poking and prodding, and never wanting to see another needle. And while many of us know breasts can be surgically reconstructed if a patient has gone through a mastectomy, most of us are not aware this surgery often does not include areolas. Enter Mary Emily Davidson.

master painter, Mary Emily Davidson turned her passion for art into a lucrative and fulfilling career, not only offering permanent makeup services, but also offering the new Ultra Realistic 3D Areola for reconstructed breasts. That’s right: Mary Emily is an expert in creating extremely realistic areolas and nipples for reconstructed and surgically removed breasts through the art of tattooing. This a true game changer, as the physical changes posttreatment are often the hardest for mastectomy patients. Mary Emily’s services run the gamut of cosmetic art, including permanent eyebrows, lips, and eyeliner; scar camouflage; tattoo removal; and corrective procedures for unsatisfactory permanent makeup. However, for Mary Emily, the most rewarding treatment is the 3D areola tattoo. “A highly specialized procedure, this is what I’m most passionate about,” Mary Emily shares. “As a treatment many are not aware of, I want women to know there are options – amazingly beautiful and natural options – to make them feel whole again,” she adds. Mary Emily credits her success to her background in fine arts and painting, sharing that it is crucial to choose an actual artist when selecting a permanent makeup artist, especially for the areola procedure, as this is where artists encounter the most struggle due to the relatively large amounts of scar tissue. Treatments typically consist of two sessions six weeks apart, each lasting two to three hours a piece. Results should last a minimum of eight years before needing the color refreshed. “Six months after surgery, most are clear to come in for a consultation where we discuss the overall treatment, as well as the desired areola size, placement, texture, and color, in addition to questions and concerns,” Mary Emily explains. Working with esteemed plastic surgeon Dr. Christopher Park of Mobile Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery and Dermatology also helps. “I’ve been over-the-moon happy having Mary Emily associated with my office,” Dr. Park shares. “She’s a fantastic person, but more important is her amazing artistic ability with tattooing the nipple area after
my reconstruction. The three-dimensional appearance can include Montgomery glands [a combination of milk glands and sebaceous glands that make up the small bumps on the areola], and the papule [the elevated bumps]. She also does amazing permanent lipstick and eyebrow tattooing. Similar to the way a cosmetic surgeon makes patients feel, these procedures make women feel happier and more beautiful,” he adds. With mutual admiration, Mary Emily says, “Partnering with Dr. Park is natural. I am able to provide his patients with more options in areola reconstruction. His breast reconstructive surgery is beautiful, and he is a true perfectionist! I want to work with a doctor who cares, and I’ve seen firsthand how he cares for his patients. I love providing options to his patients because they deserve to (and should) have their breasts whole again,” she says. And feeling beautiful is what it’s all about. “There is no way to erase what a patient has gone through after a hard-fought battle with breast cancer,” Mary Emily says. “Their stories are amazing, and I love that I am able to be part of their journey that many say gives them a sense of normalcy and closure. It is my mission to make them feel restored.” Reassuring ACCESS that the process is painless, Mary Emily adds, “I’ve had clients that had work done that didn’t last. Having studied new European techniques that use pointillism [a technique of painting in which small, distinct dots of color are applied in patterns to form an image], various colors, and a unique aftercare treatment, my technique is completely unique. I have invested a tremendous
BE FOR E
amount of time and money seeking out the absolute best techniques in the world.” Mary Emily actually met her teacher, a woman from England by the name of Vicky Martin, at a conference. “She has areola tattoos all over her body, as she opted to perfect her technique on herself,” Emily says. “She is the absolute best instructor. When people see the photos on my website or Instagram, they think the areolas are real, but it is 100 percent permanent makeup! Most are equally shocked by my videos, as the skin tissue is often completely flat.” Having lost her father to cancer, Mary Emily shares, “Restoring women empowers me to feel this is a victory over cancer, wiping it away like it never existed.” Corie Riley, a former patient of Mary Emily’s, sums it up best: “My road was long, stressful, and strenuous,” Corie tells. “I had great doctors, but at the end of the road was a gift: Mary Emily Davidson. An amazing person and artist, she truly gave me the gift of wholeness, completion, and closure. She gives women in this situation something no one else can: self-confidence and the ability to feel complete again. I’m so grateful and glad my journey ended with her. A diagnosis is not a death sentence; never stop fighting.”

The Greek Fest Charity Gala
The 4th Annual Greek Fest Charity Gala is set to take place at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church at 50 S. Ann Street in Mobile on November 2nd. This elegant event attracts Mobile’s finest, making for a night of gorgeous people, delicious food, and fundraising all in the name of supporting multiple area charities. Dr. Stephanie D. Grosz, one of the Gala’s chairmen, tells ACCESS about this wonderful event and its mission.
T
he Gala is the brainchild of local developer Greg Saad and Father Elias Stevens, the priest at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church. Started four years ago, their mission was to continue the spirit of giving within the Orthodox community and meant to complement their local Greek Fest’s charitable arm. Over the years, the Gala has become its own 501(c) (3) charitable organization. Lawrence Ford Jr., the Gala’s president, was instrumental in launching the first event and helping it grow in success over the next four years. Other key contributors are Presbytera Kasandra Stevens and Ryan Fulgham, who round out the core executive team. “It has been a beautiful labor of love to bring this event to life over the last four years,” says Gala chairman Dr. Stephanie D. Grosz. The Gala has had tremendous success in raising funds for local charities, having raised a total of $290,000 for various causes. Their goal has been to rotate three different charities each year that are in need of additional funding to continue their lifechanging work. Some of the wonderful charities the Gala has partnered with in the past include Penelope House, Prichard Preparatory School, and their own Orthodox Diakonia Retreat for youth. This year, the committee has chosen to partner with Victory Health Partners (who provide affordable quality care to the many thousands of uninsured adults in our community); Nest of Mobile (which serves the needs of at-risk youth and families); and Woody’s Song School (which helps children ages 5-21 on the autism spectrum to increase their language, socialization, and cognitive skills). “We are strictly a volunteer organization, so all of our funds are given away to those in need,” Dr. Grosz says. “That is why it is so important to partner with these wonderful charities and organizations to help those in need. We raise all of the money given away during this one event within a few hours! It is truly astonishing what we can do with the help of our wonderful sponsors and generous donors. We are so grateful for everyone involved and thankful for the opportunity to work with these fine organizations,” Dr. Grosz shares. Guests of the event will enjoy upscale Greek food by Naman’s catering, great music by Black Jacket Symphony, and a silent auction featuring antiques, furniture, rugs, gift cards, and even vacations. “We have seen great success with our auctions each year,” Dr. Grosz says. “We even have an online auction for those not in attendance which people absolutely love; the competitive spirit really comes 76 ACCESS Magazine / October 2019

out,” she jokes. “We really try to make this event fun, interesting, and beautiful. We know people have a choice of which events they attend, and we know these are truly worthy charities, which is why it is important for us to have a memorable event.” Dr. Grosz urges everyone to come out and support their cause and asks that those who are unable to attend consider donating, as every bit of support, in turn, sustains others.

A Diamond i n t h e r o u g h Like pop queen Rihanna sings, we all want to “shine bright like a diamond.” Diamonds have been mined for centuries, forever seducing us with their brilliance and lasting shine. It can often lead one to wonder: what exactly is the process involved? Celebrating its 140th anniversary, Goldstein’s Jewelers is poised to explain the intricacies of diamond mining and shaping via the Diamonds exhibit at History Museum of Mobile, where the museum will highlight an additional complimentary exhibit, Married in Mobile: Four Centuries of Wedding Fashions. From September 6 to December 1, guests are invited to learn the ins and outs of diamonds (and the dresses that often go with), all for the low admission price of $10.
I
t’s true what they say: diamonds ARE a girl’s best friend. We all know that a trip to any area mall inevitably leads to a drift toward the jewelry counters. At first you go shopping to look for a simple outfit, but as soon as you round the corner, multiple jewelry shops abound, all with diamonds glistening behind the glass, enticing you to stop and swoon. Since you clearly don’t have any self-control (like us), you obey their demands and begin fogging the windows encasing the diamonds. One thing leads to another, and next thing you know, you feel you just have to own them all. It’s true; these diamonds are gorgeous, but have you ever wondered how these diamonds get their shine? Vistors to the History Museum’s Diamonds exhibition will learn the process behind achieving the diamonds perfect form. Miners have been mining diamonds for centuries, yet (with proper care) the same diamonds mined then continue to retain their illustrious shine. How does this happen? “The Diamonds exhibit is specifically about the formation, exploration, mining, and processing of diamonds. Visitors can mine the mysteries of diamond formation and explore the unique environments that create these precious stones,” Stephanie says. You can bring along your own diamonds to the exhibit to determine the cut, color, carat, and clarity, using the same tools found in jewelry stores. To complement the Diamonds exhibit, History Museum of Mobile installed an exhibit of its own: Married in Mobile: Four Centuries of Wedding Fashions. If you’ve ever wondered what centuries-old wedding gowns looked like, now’s your chance to see them up close and personal. Gowns from 1852 to the present along with wedding accessories dating back to 1766 are on display for everyone to stop by and view. Most of the gowns have been donated by members of the community over many decades, and the museum works hard to preserve and sometimes conserve these fragile dresses. “Many of these dresses came to us with tears or other damage,” Stephanie shares, “and it takes a tremendous amount of work to restore these textiles and similar objects.” Stephanie’s personal favorite is a two-piece gown made in the Civil War era. With its long sleeves, pearl-draped front, and matching floral, silk ball skirt (complete with a panel of striped gold and ecru fabric down the front), Stephanie says she can’t help but be drawn to its extraordinary details. “Electric

sewing machines didn’t exist in the mid-nineteenth century,” she shares, “so knowing this was made by hand is astonishing!” Diamonds and Married in Mobile no doubt go hand-in-hand with each other (pun intended). After all, what is a beautiful wedding dress without the brightest of diamonds to set it off? So, the next time you’re at the mall, you’ll be able to impress the jewelry stores with all of the knowledge you have gained by visiting this exhibit.

With a widespread epidemic of gun violence in our community, Dr. Jon Simmons of USA Health University Hospital aims to reduce the number of injuries and deaths occurring from gunshot wounds by enlisting youthful offenders from Judge Edmond Naman’s Gun Court at Strickland Youth Center to participate in Project Inspire, a three-week program in which participants shadow different mentors in order to gain useful life skills and the education needed to break the cycle of gun violence. Dr. Simmons tells ACCESS how Project Inspire has changed lives and altered the course for many young offenders in positive ways. By Caroline Edmondson / Photo Stevye Photography
D
eaths associated with gun-related injuries have increased substantially in the United States over the past decade – to the point where it is now a public health crisis. Even more shocking, a patient that is treated for a gunshot wound has a 25 percent chance of being shot again. As Chief of the Division of Trauma & Acute Care Surgery at USA Health University Hospital, Dr. Jon Simmons has treated 300 patients – 200 of which came from Mobile – in the past year, and has come to understand that the best way to treat traumatic gunshot injuries is to prevent them from happening in the first place. In order to do this, he would need to reach out to offenders that have previously been convicted of gun-related crimes and change their course for the better, as the recidivism rate from gun court is 40 percent. With the help of Dr. Ashley Williams, Project Inspire was launched in 2018. Project Inspire is a type of violence prevention program where at-risk youths are shown what will occur if their current lifestyles do not change, up to and including injury, jail time, and even death. “My goal as the Trauma Medical Director at USA Health is to serve the community in three very important trauma-related areas: 1) Provide excellent clinical care to trauma patients; 2) Perform translational research that will improve trauma care across the U.S.; and 3) Provide community outreach in ways that make our community safer,” Dr. Simmons explains. “Project Inspire is just one of multiple initiatives that we are involved with to decrease violence in our community. However, previous ‘scared straight’ programs I observed seemed to lack the elements that are necessary to create the type of adaptive change required to turn one’s life around,” Dr. Simmons adds. In order to create an effective and meaningful program, Dr. Simmons and Dr. Williams created Project Inspire’s Four Pillars: promoting education, confidence, opportunity, and mentorship. The participants of the program are chosen by Judge Edmond Naman and the probation officers at the Strickland Youth Center, specifically teens from Judge Naman’s gun court. The program averages around six participants per summer, each one completing a career assessment test to best determine the areas in which they are most likely to excel. “Each morning, the participants shadow a mentor that we specifically choose based on their career assessment and aptitude tests,” Dr. Simmons explains. “The participant will switch mentors weekly, allowing three rotations with different mentors in a field they are most likely to pursue a job in, which may include mentors from the medical field, real estate, computer technology, and many more areas. During lunch, the participants interact with featured speakers that we specifically select
80 ACCESS Magazine / October 2019
based on the needs of the participants (trauma survivors, parents who lost a child to violence, experience with alcohol and drug abuse, etc.).” Each afternoon the participants receive one-on-one help with career development, including resume writing, job interview etiquette, and ACT and GED preparation. Despite its relatively short run so far, Project Inspire has seen great success already and Dr. Simmons could not be more thrilled. “At a one-year follow-up, none of the graduates from our program had violated probation or were negatively involved with law enforcement, which is significant,” he says. “We helped two of the participants obtain their GEDs, and another graduated high school and took the ACT. We helped one of the participants fill out a job application, prepped him for the interview, drove him to the interview, and he received the job. We follow each of them closely after graduation and maintain a close relationship. We all get emotional when we hear their successes,” Dr. Simmons proudly shares. “Although it is easy to label them because of their background with law enforcement, I have found every single participant to be humble, caring, compassionate, and hardworking. Working with each of them inspires our entire staff.” But Dr. Simmons and Project Inspire aren’t just making a difference in our own communities. Recently individuals from Birmingham and Jackson, Miss. have reached out inquiring on how to implement the program in their cities. “Gun violence is a public health crisis across the country,
so it is very exciting that other cities are wanting to replicate what we are doing in Mobile,” Dr. Simmons says. The future of Project Inspire and its participants is a bright one. Dr. Simmons hopes to expand the program to run year-round in order to help as many young teens as possible. Dr. Simmons’ dedication to his community and the people within it is commendable. We look forward to watching Project Inspire continue to grow and touch as many young lives as possible.

W
ith the Junior League of Mobile’s Christmas Jubilee celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, it’s no wonder why it’s one of Mobile’s most highly anticipated events! Each year shoppers flock to the affair, eager to snag one-of-a-kind presents for everyone on their holiday lists. Originally started to fund JLM’s mission to promote voluntarism, develop the potential of women, and improve communities, the Christmas Jubilee has grown in popularity throughout the years, attracting more vendors, restaurants, performers, and shoppers than they ever could have imagined. This year’s event will take place November 15-17, encompassing a full weekend of shopping – slightly different from past years. With the purchase of a General Admission ticket ($10 in advance, $12 at the door), visitors will have access to the event’s wide range of vendors; an opportunity to visit with Santa himself; admission to the Saturday night event, “Girls’ Night Out;” and the chance to win some amazing door prizes. Tickets can also be purchased digitally this year (as opposed to previous years where tickets had to be picked up at Will Call). And with the Christmas Jubilee widely known for its shopping, the vastness of this year’s list of vendors should come as no surprise. “At this year’s market there is something for everyone, including children’s apparel and gifts; gifts and accessories for men; bath and beauty products; women’s jewelry and apparel; products for the home and garden; and gifts of all kinds,” shares JLM President Lucy Pryor Slaton. And if you get hungry from all of the shopping you are bound to do, there will be a fantastic food court featuring local restaurants and eateries serving everything from sandwiches and sides to full, hot meals, so be sure to come on an empty stomach! This event is also perfect for your little elves, as Santa’s Workshop will be on site featuring crafts and activities for children to keep them entertained and filled with holiday cheer. Santa Claus himself will also be visiting from

the North Pole during market hours to hear every child’s Christmas wish list, and for your shopping bag carriers – oops – we mean “husbands,” a lounge area will be set up with televisions for those who don’t want to miss any of the football games that weekend. In addition, this year Christmas Jubilee will host two events: a VIP Shopping event on Friday, and the Girls’ Night Out event on Saturday. “The VIP event will open our market, so shoppers who attend VIP Shopping will have the first chance to shop all of the merchandise our vendors have to offer,” Lucy explains. “We’ll be serving breakfast bites, cocktails, and sweets and offering exclusive silent auction items and other special surprises as well.” The Saturday night event will be included with the purchase of any General Admission ticket. “In the past it has been a closed event,” Lucy says. “Now anyone who purchases a General Admission ticket will get to join in on the fun. There will be complimentary cocktails while they last and plenty of pampering for the ladies,” Lucy adds. And don’t forget about the online silent auction, which will have some amazing items available to bid on anywhere and anytime, whether you’re in attendance at Christmas Jubilee or not. While Christmas Jubilee is a wonderful event filled with a large amount of great merchants and plenty of Christmas cheer, what makes the event even more special is the fact that the money raised goes right back into our wonderful community through the life changing work of JLM. “All funds that are raised go directly to fund our mission,” Lucy says. “This year we have launched a new adopt a school program. We are also planning to continue funding our diaper bank, as well as working with many other partner agencies. One General Admission ticket buys diapers for a baby for one week or helps feed two children meals and snacks over the weekend.” That said, this event is the perfect way to kick off the holidays, all while spreading Christmas cheer to those in the community who need help the most.

As guests take in the cheerful atmosphere, they will have a chance to taste over 30 types of champagne offered at various tables sprinkled around the Wharf (you may even find the perfect sparkling wine to serve at your upcoming holiday soirée). As the libations flow, guests will have the opportunity to sample mouthwatering appetizers from featured village restaurants such as Slick Lips Seafood & Oyster House, Poppy’s Crazy Lobster, Hartell’s Village Diner, Moo La La Ice Cream & Desserts, Cannery Lane Cantina, Village Door, Hammerhead’s Bar & Grill, and Roberto’s. “We are so thankful that this is usually a sold-out event,” Leighann Elliott says. “We love giving our guests a great experience throughout the evening. It is a wonderful opportunity to try some new sparkling wines and sip on your favorites. The food that our merchants serve is delicious, and this year we have made an addition to the festival. Sparkling waves, soft breezes, and live music set the mood for SunQuest Cruises’ Champagne Cruise on Friday, November 15th. SunQuest Cruises presents the ultimate way to kick off the Sparkling Wine and Holiday Lights Festival! The SOLARIS and its chefs are featuring an elaborate four-course menu, with each course paired with premium champagnes,” Leighann adds. And don’t worry about having to find a babysitter for the kiddos if you plan to attend, as this event is perfect for every member of the family. “The Village is always open to the public, so even if guests are not participating in the tasting, they are welcome to walk its streets and enjoy all the holiday décor and all the great things The Village has to offer,” she adds. To round out the event, the evening will conclude with a preview of Baytowne Wharf’s tree lighting and their choreographed light show, “12 Nights of Lights,” which takes place in the Events Plaza. “You will not want to miss this spectacular way to end the evening,” Leighann says. Tickets can be purchased for $45, with proceeds going to the Baytowne Wharf’s partner, Emerald Coast Children’s Advocacy Center. So, secure your ticket, enjoy delicious drinks and food, and kickstart your holiday season with The Village of Baytowne Wharf!

BECOMING MOBILE! “Death Becomes Her: A History and Celebration of Magnolia Cemetery” Mobile’s favorite Architectural Historian, Cart Blackwell, is back highlighting Mobile’s historic burial ground, Magnolia Cemetery. By Cart Blackwell
C
emeteries, churchyards, and graveyards all too often connotate the foreboding in terms of thought and visualization. The reverse is generally the case though. Keep in mind, I am not talking about treeless fields of what appear to be granite countertops, but instead draw reference to those otherworldly landscape ensembles combining art, nature, and repose. Most every city has one or more old cemetery. Mobile, Alabama, is truly blessed with half a dozen such communities of the departed that possess fine trappings and an evocative atmosphere. The largest (and arguably the most impressive) of Mobile’s historic burial grounds is Magnolia Cemetery. Tucked away onto itself with exquisite vistas of the downtown skyline, Magnolia Cemetery is at once a historical dreamland, an outdoor sculpture garden, and community success story. Death truly becomes her… As with all burial grounds, Magnolia Cemetery was born of a tragedy. Death, well, it does happen. Mobile’s low-lying topography and more than semi-tropical climate coupled with a lack of understanding of the causes of diseases were the impetuses for a whole of host of fevers that ravaged the populace throughout the Colonial, Antebellum, and Postbellum epochs. Large numbers of peoples died during these epidemics. Mobile had several earlier burial grounds, including the Spanish Campo Santa and Church Street Graveyard, where the mortal remains of the earthly departed were interred. The remains occupying the Campo Santa were relocated for the construction of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, and Church Street Graveyard was rapidly filling up by the time of the founding of Magnolia Cemetery in 1836. Thirty-six acres of land on the outskirts of the city were procured for convenient access to – yet a healthy distance from – the deceased. Magnolia Cemetery soon became the most fashionable and elaborate address of any Mobilian who ever thought about dying. It must be remembered that 19th Century mourning practices entailed considerable ritual and grandeur. The marble populating Magnolia Cemetery are testaments to collective and individual responses to the loss of loved ones during those times. A walk through this elegiac setting provides an opportunity to stand next some of Mobile’s most illustrious historical figures and better realize the cultural realities informing their existences. Magnolia Cemetery remained one of Mobile’s principle burying grounds well into the 20th Century. The creation of Pine Crest Cemetery, filling up of lots, abandonment of the inner city, and shoddy maintenance by a local servicing outfit caused for considerable neglect to this magical land of the departed. As is often the case with historic preservation, Magnolia Cemetery was saved for future generations by the actions of a grand lady: in this case, Emily Townsend Miller. “Miss Emily” was en route to a meeting of the Historic Mobile Preservation Society at nearby Oakleigh when she not only observed, but also realized the need to intervene on behalf of a historic treasure and those interred within it. Shortly after that fateful encounter in 1984, Miller founded Friends of Magnolia Cemetery, a non-profit whose mission is the maintenance of the cemetery’s grounds and preservation of its monuments. Miss Emily was not operating in a vacuum, though. Another Mobilian, Mrs. Aletta Turner, established a trust bearing her name that has made huge strides in reversing neglect, conserving fabric, and enhancing the property. The Friends of Magnolia Cemetery has funded and erected a fence surrounding the whole of the now 100 acre burial ground; restored markers from one of the compounds to the other; reinstated or replaced historic ironwork; instigated landscaping improvements (including the planting of new trees – many of them magnolias, of course); and launched educational programs that highlight the history of the site and the lives of those within (for the large part beneath it, but the dead cannot argue). Thirty-five years after Miss Emily’s pioneering effort, Magnolia Cemetery is again resplendent. Magnolia Cemetery is now the largest national register site in the City of Mobile. A contributing property in the Oakleigh Garden National Register Historic District, it constitutes a place which Mobilians can take pride in their past and their present. In no way frightening, Magnolia Cemetery ranks among the Port City’s most distinctive and beautiful ensembles. 86 ACCESS Magazine / October 2019

A
s an interior designer, I often come across all kinds of collections that people want to display in their homes. Some collections are easier to display than others, and some, of course, are more valuable. By definition, a collectible is something of present-day value and worth collecting in hopes that it will increase in value. Sometimes, collections are more valuable for sentimental reasons, and you cannot put a price or value on them. I never really thought of myself as a collector, but after a recent move, I realized I had several. I love old books… like, really old books – leather bound that are several hundred years old. They aren’t in great shape, but I still love to stack them and use them in my bookcases, or just lay them on coffee tables. One of my most valuable collections is my collection of Sid Dickens Memory Tiles. These Memory Tiles are sold at select retailers in limited quantities, with a set-in-stone price. They can never be offered at a sale price, which helps increase the value of each tile. Some memory blocks will be retired every season, and you will no longer be able to purchase those certain ones. The only way to get retired tiles is through a “resell” online format, and some tiles go up to ten times the original purchase value, especially in pristine condition in their original box (many times the packaging is as important as the item itself). Typically, these tiles are hung on a wall, but I love to take them down to put them on my dining room table when entertaining guests. There is always a perfect tile for every occasion! Moving forward, instead of keeping your collection stowed away in a cabinet or back bedroom, consider bringing part of it out for a special occasion. It can be a great conversation starter. And you never know… you may just find out what your friends collect, too. So, what do you collect? Much love,
Tim Burt
