This is the perfect time of year to experiment with color. Combine blushcolored roses, deep red viburnum, dusty green ferns, pomegranates, multicolored dahlias, succulents and eucalyptus garland for a truly striking centerpiece. Deep purples and reds look amazing with faded green and white.

THANKS TO THE AMAZING WEATHER IN EARLY FALL, SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER ARE TWO OF THE MOST POPULAR MONTHS TO GET MARRIED. WHILE FALL CAN OFTEN CONJURE IMAGES OF RED LEAVES, ORANGE PUMPKINS AND BROWN TURKEYS REMINISCENT OF AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL’S CLASSROOM WALLS, THIS SEASON ACTUALLY OFFERS THE MOST VERSATILE COLOR PALLETS AND CENTERPIECE OPTIONS AROUND.

IF YOU’RE HAVING A COUNTRY WEDDING THIS SEASON OR PLAN TO HAVE THE RECEPTION IN A BREATHTAKING BARN, IT’S EASY TO GO RUSTIC.

Try wood elements and natural autumn flora like twigs, apples, vines, burnt orange flowers or leaves, tree stumps, tiny squash painted over in gold pears and wheat. If you’re feeling bold, use faux fur as table runners. Faux antlers also add a rugged touch.

A grand exit. For day weddings, give your guests something colorful to throw as you leave the reception. For night, providing them with something illuminated, such as sparklers, lights the way beautifully in photographs.

A “thank you” picture. Before you take off your elegant wedding duds, take one minute to pose for a picture together holding a thank you sign (prepared in advance) so you can include the photo with your thank you notes.

An aerial view. Of the ceremony, the first dance or the cutting of the cake. It’s all about the dress really. You definitely want to catch it in all its glory from this impressive angle.

A “first look” shot. The look on anyone’s face when the fully-bedecked bride is first presented is always priceless. Be sure to capture the expressions of the bridesmaids, the groom and especially the father of the bride.

A generational moment. Capture three (or more) generations on the bride or groom’s side. The women could opt for something different and include simply their hands and wedding rings. Or the couple could pose together each holding a wedding photo of his or her parents.

FLOWERS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS By Laura Fur Mericas

ALL OF THE ELEMENTS OF YOUR WEDDING DAY SHOULD SAY SOMETHING ABOUT YOU AND YOUR PARTNER’S LOVE STORY. SOME OF THOSE ELEMENTS — LIKE FLOWERS — WILL SPEAK LOUDER THAN OTHERS.

Flowers can provide a great deal of meaning and symbolism to your wedding design. Selecting the flowers you will carry down the aisle toward your soulmate and the others that will deck your reception hall, can go much deeper than just choosing color, size and texture. So in order to help you think before you speak, we’ve narrowed down some of our favorite fall floral choices so that your flowers can say everything you want them to, in addition to “I do.”

DAHLIAS — These bold buds typically signify standing out from the crowd and following one’s own unique path despite challenges — a perfect fit for the more offbeat bride. This multi-layered and robust flower can also represent kindness and grace in its pink hues, strength when red and new beginnings when green or blue.

12

ROSES — The rose has widely been accepted as a symbol of love, but roses of all sorts have different meanings. In general, this romantic flower signifies an achievement, such as committing to the love of your life.

Each rose color has an even deeper meaning of its own. The classic red rose represents beauty and purity. Fallinspired yellow roses signify friendship and new beginnings, while orange roses are meant to show feelings of passion and desire.

SUNFLOWERS — With their bright and radiant petals, sunflowers are meant to be a symbol of one’s adoration. And just as their namesake rises every day, these flowers are meant to represent longevity and loyalty — two qualities all hope to find in their marriage.

CHRYSANTHEMUM — This fall favorite looks like a cross between a pom pom and a daisy. With a wide variety of purples, oranges and greens, this flower stands out on its own, or you can use these to add a punch of pigment to your bi-color rose bouquet. The chrysanthemum aptly symbolizes optimism and joy, which is a must for your wedding day and the start of your new life together. The striking amaryllis stands out in a bouquet, and it knows it! These beauties, most often seen in a deep burgundy or orange color, signify confidence and radiant beauty. Doesn’t everyone want to feel that way on their wedding day?

CALLA LILLIES — Stylish, sleek and simple, calla lilies can make for some of the most sophisticated floral designs with an array of meanings. The traditional white calla lily signifies purity and faithfulness while blooms with warm, purple hues represent charm and yellow alludes to gratitude.

WEDDING INVITATIONS:

CHOOSING THE PRINTING STYLE THAT’S RIGHT FOR YOU LETTERPRESS  Description: A raised metal plate of the invitation is created then inked and pressed onto the paper leaving a deep impression on the typically thick cardstock.  Advantage: Sophisticated, timeless look and texturized feel. Process requires heavy, quality stock (typically cotton) adding a tactile benefit.  Disadvantage: Only one color can be applied per run through the antique printing press thus this method can be pricier and more time-consuming for invitations using multiple ink colors. Pricing: $$$

EVEN IF YOU’RE NEW TO WEDDING PLANNING, YOU PROBABLY ALREADY KNOW THAT THERE’S MORE THAN ONE WAY TO PRINT YOUR INVITATIONS. BUT DID YOU KNOW THAT THE COSTS OF PRINTING CAN VARY RATHER DRAMATICALLY? IT’S IMPORTANT TO CONSIDER YOUR BUDGET CAREFULLY AND DECIDE WHAT YOU WANT IN AN INVITATION WHEN MAKING THE DECISION BETWEEN THE PROCESSES OF LETTERPRESS, THERMOGRAPHIC AND FLAT PRINTING.

THERMOGRAPHY  Description: The artwork is printed on the paper then dusted with a powder and heated resulting in a raised effect.  Advantage: Offers a raised effect for a fraction of the cost of other techniques.  Disadvantage: Pricier and more time-consuming for invitations using multiple ink colors. Raised effect has shiny look and rubbery feel. Best with light paper and dark ink so somewhat restrictive. Pricing: $$

Olivia Craven + John Gardner

WRITTEN BY: EMILY WARNER PHOTOS BY: TRINITY PHOTOGRAPHY

Romance planted in school grows along Enoree River In 2015, shortly after graduating from Presbyterian College with a bachelor’s degree in Biology, Olivia Craven started teaching science at Clinton Middle School. Her future fiancé John, who is three years older than Olivia and a native of Saluda, South Carolina, was working in the same school district as a strength and conditioning coordinator at the local high school. As Olivia explained, veteran teachers have a penchant for setting up new, single teachers in the district, so every week at the Clinton High School football game the older teachers would tell her about John and suggest she spend time with him. “Have you met John? He’s so cute and sweet. You should go out with him!” John was hearing a similar story about Olivia.

23

John asked another teacher for Olivia’s phone number and asked her on a date. This would be the first time they met each other. Although neither John nor Olivia were expecting too much to come of their casual meeting, as Olivia says, something clicked during dinner at J Peters that night in October. Two years later, the day before Thanksgiving in 2017, the couple took their German shorthaired pointer Bohannon on a walk to Horseshoe Falls on the Enoree River. Although these walks and exploring were something the couple often did, John had secretly gone to the river earlier in the day

and planted a glass bottle with a note inside beside the river. An unsuspecting Olivia read the note in the bottle and then John got down on one knee and proposed to her beside the Enoree River. Her family, who had been hiding from view, recorded the special moment from the opposite side of the river.

From the beginning of the engagement, the couple knew they wanted a strong photography team to capture the preparation of the wedding and the ceremony itself. Olivia chose Trinity Photography of Abbeville, South Carolina, who not only photographed the wedding ceremony, but also

Olivia’s bridal portraits, an afternoon with the wedding party and the reception following the wedding. The bride selected a Hayley Paige gown from Voila in Greenwood, South Carolina. Seamstress Paula Makkas of The Perfect Fit by Paula in Greenville, South Carolina altered Olivia’s gown and overskirt, and even made a veil. The couple selected Ingles in Laurens, South Carolina for wedding flowers. Rick Childer of Ingles assisted the couple greatly in choosing their ceremony florals.

27

The evening before the wedding, a rehearsal dinner was held in celebration of Olivia and John at The Cabana and Storm Cellar in Newberry, South Carolina. Star Chappell owns the Cabana, and she recently opened a new wedding venue in Clinton called the Cotton Loft. The couple had originally planned their reception to take place at a plantation near Columbia, South Carolina but were excited when the Cotton Loft opened in their hometown. The venue is a fully renovated cotton depot; Star also took care of catering for the event. The day of the wedding, April 13, 2019, artists and stylists of Cotton Rouge and Co. in Greenville provided makeup and hairstyling for the bride, bridesmaids and mother of the bride in the Cotton Loft’s bridal suite. Both the bridal party and groomsmen got ready at the Cotton Loft. John and his groomsmen wore traditional black tuxedos ordered through the Black Tux, an online tuxedo rental service. Star catered a full brunch for the bridal party

and bride’s grandmother, aunts, mother-in-law and cousins. After brunch, the bridal party took the Laurens County Trolley around town for a photoshoot; they returned in the afternoon to finish getting ready for the 5 p.m. wedding. Olivia Craven and John Gardner were married on April 13, 2019 at First Presbyterian Church in Clinton, South Carolina. A reception was held afterward at the Cotton Loft. Music was provided by Island Sound and the wedding cake was from Strossners in Greenville. The couple live in Clinton and plan to continue working in the Clinton school district. Olivia will start her master’s degree in January in applied learning and teaching.

Olivia Warner + James Daly

WRITTEN BY: EMILY WARNER PHOTOS BY: TRINITY PHOTOGRAPHY

32

Some might call it the luck of the Irish, but some might call it destiny As nine bridesmaids and nine groomsmen waited to enter the sanctuary, adjusting their dresses and jackets and checking their shoes, Olivia Warner and her father waited patiently in the back and watched the two flower girls play. In the early evening of May 18, Olivia Warner and James Daly were married at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Greenwood, South Carolina. A native of Greenwood, Olivia was escorted by her father, Dr. Bret Warner. Approximately two hundred and fifty guests attended the ceremony in Westminster’s light and airy sanctuary. The Reverend Spears Alexander and Dr. Chris Leonard of Greenwood officiated. Ceremony musicians Leigh and Al Gambrell filled the space with organ and piano music, and bagpiper David Lee McLeod performed the recessional.Â

33

The bride wore an elegant ivory-colored Pronovias gown designed by Herve Moreau, featuring a drop waist and extended train in Josephine brocade. Paired with an Edward Berger cathedral veil edged in Shiffli lace, Olivia’s gown struck a flattering balance of classic fabric and modern silhouette. She carried a hand-tied bouquet of white garden roses, ranunculus, and spray roses accented with spirea, jasmine vine, camellia foliage, sweet peas, eucalyptus and delicate fern provided by Urban Petals in Greer, South Carolina. The mother of the bride, Ellen Warner, provided pearl accents from her own bridal veil.

34

Olivia’s bridal party wore sleeveless whisper-blue Jenny Yoo dresses from Bella Bridesmaids in Greenville, South Carolina and carried bouquets also provided by Urban Petals. Barbie Dunlap did the bride’s, mother of the bride’s, and maid of honor’s makeup; Sheree Hill and assistants did makeup for the bridal party. Zonya Helms, Bryce Alverson and Gina Grogan curled, straightened and pinned up hair for the bridal party.

35

Following the ceremony, a wedding reception was held outdoors at the Greenwood Country Club. Olivia’s wedding planner, Laura Katherine McCallum, organized the event, which was also catered by the Country Club. Professional Party Rentals from Greenville supplied the rental equipment and tents for the reception. The Jake Bartley Band performed well into the night playing the newlywed’s favorite songs, hits such as “Purple Rain” and the band’s newest release, “Cannonball” as guests enjoyed cutting loose on the tiled dance floor. During the reception, Olivia and James cut their four-tiered lemon, pina colada and raspberry wedding cake, provided by Holly’s Cake in Belton, South Carolina. The team at Trinity Photography of Abbeville, South Carolina captured every moment.

36

The previous evening, the parents of the groom, Dr. and Mrs. James Anthony Daly III of Savannah, Georgia held a rehearsal dinner honoring Olivia and James at Sundance Gallery in uptown Greenwood. The Dalys chose to outfit the venue in Irish decoration, including dark green patterned tartan and an “Irish Wishing Stone” guest book as a nod to both families’ strong Irish heritage and the country where James proposed.

37

On December 22, 2017 James proposed to an unsuspecting Olivia on the Ha’penny bridge in Dublin, Ireland, the night before returning to the United States. Built in 1816, the Ha’Penny was the first pedestrian bridge across the River Liffey; it was built as a cut-through to the city center for those willing to pay the half-pence fare. Over the years, the elegant ivory ironwork and central location of the bridge has solidified

its Dublin reputation as a romantic, inspiring locale. Since then, Olivia has earned her Juris Doctor from Mercer University School of Law; she graduated in Macon, Georgia a week before the wedding. James and his brother, Madison, have developed and expanded their own organic topsoil and composting business, Daly Organics, which is based in Hardeeville, South Carolina. The couple will live in downtown Greenville.
