THE GULF COAST’S PREMIER STERLING SILVER JEWELRY STORE

S

By : Thomas Waggoner

ince last month’s article, I had a reader mail me a question asking who created some of the events in Galveston such as, Dickens on the Strand and others. After a little investigating, here’s what I found.

DICKENS ON THE STRAND - Galveston’s Victorian past was on the verge of extinction. Officials wanted to demolish the historic buildings. Ms. Evangeline Wharton came up with the idea of a festival highlighting the city’s glory days during the age of Victorian author Charles Dickens. Now the Victorian homes are restored! And the story of Ebeneezer Scrooge is told over and over at the Christmas festival, with over 30,000 visitors each year. FUN FACT: The event brings to Galveston four million dollars into the local economy. MARDI GRAS - On March 26, 1856, the first known public Mardi Gras ball in Galveston was held at the house of the City Company founder, Michel Menard. According to the Galveston news, 300 guests attended. FUN FACT: The inspiration for the large event came earlier in 1840, when Michel Menard hosted a masquerade ball at his home on the island, probably as a housewarming. GHOST TOURS- For quite some time the ghost tours of Galveston have been given by tour guide Dash Beardsley a.k.a. The Ghost Man. Any

brave soul can go on the walking tours and ghost hunt around the island for just $20. Ghost tours are given year-round. I guess ghosts don’t care if it’s cold or hot outside. LONE STAR RALLY- The city of Galveston hosts the Lone Star Rally each year. It started in 2001 but in 2003 the city became the host. FUN FACT: It is estimated that the event brings in $115 million for the city. Each year there are games, car shows, a bike rodeo, and even a Lone Star Rally Tattoo Expo! A large part of what makes the Lone Star Rally so unique is it setting. Participants take in the most spectacular waterfront riding along the Gulf. Then, adding the wonderful architecture and bike accessibility of historic downtown Galveston, riders have a spectacular view of local history. CHILI AND BEER FEST - Covering the last 15 years, Yagas brings the best Chili and Beer lovers from all parts of the country to Galveston. Chili & beer, Chili & beer, need I say more? Yum! SAND CASTLE FESTIVAL- this one is one of my favorites! The American Institute of Architects from Houston host this festival each year. They are 34 years strong! Well, dear reader (who wishes to remain anonymous) I hope this answers some of your questions. Galveston Island is certainly the place to see and do lots of fun activities. Remember, if you want to have your fun fact researched, please send your question to PO Box 612, New Caney, TX 77357. See everyone next month!

Why does a company need a five-hour window? Why can’t a company be run more efficiently? Why do we have to waste half of our day waiting for them? They don’t seem to value our time, just their own. Maybe they should just name their company, “We’ll Get Around To You When We Feel Like It.” Don’t even get us started on Doctors’ appointments. You know, the one that has us on a six week wait time just to get in the door. By the time we get in to see the doctor, we are either a goner or the symptoms have gone away on their own. To top it off, the doctors’ office asks us to arrive 15 minutes early for our appointment. That’s so we can add that to the hour we are just going to be sitting there after we arrive. Retinoids (Vitamin A Derivatives) A Fountain of Youth?

MEET DR. TARA WEGRYN

BY: DR. TARA WEGRYN

What can Retinoids do for me? Vitamin A derivatives (commonly referred to as retinoids) can do wonders for your skin. Naturally abundant in carrots, eggs and sweet potatoes, synthetic retinoids are a gold standard ingredient in skin care because they alter the behavior of aging cells to act more youthful. They improve the appearance of the skin by reducing fine lines and wrinkles, increasing exfoliation, improving skin tone and texture, and reducing hyperpigmentation. They accomplish all this by first causing the outer layer of keratinocytes to shed off, leaving the skin smoother and more evenly pigmented. Next, Vitamin A derivatives effect the epidermal cells which start replicating faster, causing the skin to look and feel softer and healthier. This amazing vitamin also shrinks dilated pores and improves cell turnover within the pores so that they are less likely to clog and become blackheads or whiteheads.

How often can I use Vitamin-A products on my face and how soon will I see results? Most people will notice improvement in their skin after 2-3 weeks of using a product with Vitamin A, but sometimes it can be as long as 6 weeks, depending on the skin type and concentration. Retinoids can be strong and often cause peeling and redness as well as irritation. It is best to apply the product sparingly all over the face, skipping days or adhering to a schedule of application every three days. After your skin gets acclimated to the product, you can increase the frequency of use.

Are Retinoid, Retinol and Retin-A all names for the same thing, and which ZO® Skin Health Products contain them? Retinoid is the general category of synthetic Vitamin A derivatives. The over-the-counter version is called Retinol and is milder than the prescription version known as Retin-A or Tretinoin. Retinol is a powerful ingredient in Dr. Obagi’s ZO® Skin Health ‘Prevent and Correct’ line. A partial list of products that contain it are Wrinkle and Texture Repair, Retinol Skin Brightener, Renewal Crème and Daily Power Defense. If you decide to add Retinol to your skincare regime, we will look at your specific skin type and needs to select the best corrective ZO® Skin Health product for you.

Are there any down-sides to using Vitamin-A derivatives in my face care regime? While using a Vitamin-A product, it may be best to avoid certain irritating skin care products such as those containing lactic acid, salicylic acid, or glycolic acid. On the other hand, using fragrance-free moisturizers and hydrating creams is encouraged and can sooth the Vitamin-A treated skin. Allow the Retinol product to absorb into the skin for 10-15 minutes before applying a moisturizer. Additionally, it is imperative that you use sunscreen daily while using Retinol as your skin will become very sensitive to the sun. A Fountain of Youth? Probably not, but Retinoids are the gold standard skincare ingredient that help the aging skin cells act young again.

Have a great day, and I hope you continue to “Look Fresh and Feel Confident”. 26

Help Your Heart’s Health

Y

our heart beats faster anytime you see that special him or her; sometimes you think it might just burst with all the love you feel. Actually, that’s epinephrine and norepinephrine being released into the bloodstream. This triggers the heart to beat faster and that is why you can feel it pumping away when you are attracted to someone. Your heart works hard for you every day and not just when you are in love! In fact, your heart began beating 22 days after you were conceived and continues pumping on average 80 times a minute. At the rate of 80 BPM that gives a ballpark figure of 42,075,904 beats per year, give or take a couple million. A reasonable estimate for the number of heartbeats in a lifetime is about three billion. If your heart could talk to you, he/she might say, “Hey! I’ve got to beat 42 million times A YEAR, so take better care of me and we can live together a lot longer! You take care of me, I’ll take care of you.” So how can you help your heart’s health? You can improve your cardiorespiratory endurance through regular exercise. Activities that help improve the condition of your heart and lungs are those that cause an elevated heart rate for a sustained period of time. Cardiorespiratory fitness has been found to help reduce the risk of heart disease, lung cancer, type 2 diabetes, and stroke. Performing activities that elevate your heart rate increase your cardiorespiratory conditioning in several ways. The heart muscle is strengthened so it can pump

more blood per heartbeat. Simultaneously, additional small arteries are grown within muscle tissue, so blood can be delivered to working muscles more effectively when needed. The American College of Sports Medicine recommends aerobic exercise (ones in which you get your heart rate elevated) 3-5 times per week for 30-60 minutes, at an intensity that keeps the heart rate at 65-85 percent of the maximum heart rate. Though it depends on many factors, a desirable resting heart rate is between 60 and 80 beats per minute, and a healthy blood pressure is less than 120 over 80 mmHg. When you can move your cardiorespiratory workouts up a level, it is best to exercise beyond 30 minutes (up to 40 minutes or longer) at a moderate intensity since the body begins to metabolize fat after 30 minutes of aerobic activity. That’s excellent news for those of us interested in losing weight since the glucose is used up, and the body begins fat metabolism instead. While the prospect of donning your sneakers, opening your front door to be met with a blast of heat and humidity and going out to pound the pavement for a few miles may not appeal to you, there are so many other ways you can get into the game of cardiorespiratory fitness! For many people who get minimal exercise, adding more activity to their lives can begin with simply walking more. If possible, you may decide to walk to work rather than drive or go for a walk in your neighborhood or on our fabulous beaches in the evenings. Grab your significant other and your dog and go out there together. My husband and I have some of our most enjoyable conversations while we are walking our dogs together. You can really learn a lot about another person while walking together at the end

of the day when the stress of work is over. Some people may take up a new activity such as dancing. Those who already have a pastime such as golf may add more active elements to it, such as forgoing the use of a golf cart. Other examples of cardiorespiratory activities are swimming, jogging, cycling, or group fitness classes such as Step, Zumba, Pound, and low impact floor aerobics. For some, the comradery of a group fitness class experience is just what they need to stick with a new exercise regime. The people in your class become your workout family - you help hold each other accountable for showing up to sweat together, you find common ground in comparing your sore muscles with each other, you celebrate that the pain you feel today will be the strength you all have tomorrow. For others, their heart-pumping activities are more comfortable as a solo endeavor. Whichever is your preferred method of achieving heart and lung fitness makes no difference. What is important is to find which cardiorespiratory activities you enjoy and do them regularly and for the long haul! Find something you can inject into your lifestyle and make it a part of your everyday routine. It is important to begin these activities slowly and gradually increase the intensity. And you should always seek the advice of a health professional to determine your current state of health and receive recommendations for a fitness program. Cardiorespiratory conditioning is an indication of a person’s overall physical health. Getting regular physical activity, especially aerobic exercise, can improve your heart and lungs’ ability to help you move comfortably through life and help ensure you’ll be around for your special someone for many years to come. So, take care of your ticker!

R

ESTAURANT EVIEW by: Tom Valliere & Charlie Bresenhan

Highlighting Galveston’s Best of the Best Dining Experiences. grandeur culminating in the renowned Olympia Grill waterfront restaurant on Pier 21 in downtown Galveston and their short lived outpost in League City on the mainland. Alas, over expansion and the rebuilding of Interstate 45 spelled doom for the League City location and ultimately pier 21 and the Seawall locations succumbed. With a determination and in the true spirit of how Galvestonians respond to disasters, the brothers pushed forward and were able reopen their former Seawall Olympia location re-badged as The Kriticos Grill. Tikie the older brother decided the time had come to retire and Larry remained as sole proprietor of the new enterprise.

T

he Kriticos family has been a formidable presence on Galveston island for generations. The family patriarch immigrated to Galveston from Patmos Greece and opened the Seawall Cafe on 17th and Seawall in 1946. His wife Nora and her family came from Sparta Greece. Having made Galveston their home, the couple worked hard and the small cafe prospered. Settling into their new home, they started a family and their two sons, Larry and Tikie, literally grew up in this family run restaurant business. It was natural they would carry the family tradition forward.

And carry forward they did! Always expanding to meet the growing demand for their authentic Greek food and family recipes, their Olympia restaurants grew in locations, size and

Armed with a large portfolio of proven family recipes, an extremely loyal customer base, and his dedicated staff, this should have been an easy launch. Unfortunately, enormous headwinds set in to disrupt Larry’s plans. First off is the seasonal nature of doing business in a summer resort. This creates an asymmetrical revenue stream that must be dealt with even in normal times. However, these are not even remotely normal times. Launching a new business into the face of a pandemic and the accompanying disruptions and uncertainties presents unprecedented challenges. From total shutdowns, to carry out only, to reduced seating, to increased seating, and then back to reduced seating. Couple that with the cancellation of all of the off-season events and you can see the difficulty of maintaining any sort of business or staffing plan. Undaunted, Larry pressed forward. His Seawall location proved to be an advantage as he was able to greatly expand his outdoor seating and enhance his reduced in-house dining capability. His central Seawall location and ample free parking helped, but mostly it was his dogged determination, hard work, commitment to quality, and his island famous recipes coupled with faultless execution by his dedicated staff that got him through. Still struggling, the restaurant has expanded their lunch and dinner specials and continue to offer their traditional favorites combined with happy hour specials. On a recent visit we had

Kritikos Grill a delicious lemon chicken lunch special preceded by a bowl of their homemade chicken soup. My dining partner had their gyro pita with a Greek salad. Their highly regarded homemade Greek dressing is now available for purchase. One of the few local restaurants that offers lamb chops, shanks, and other cuts, all perfectly prepared, is a treat for this lamb lover. Their kitchen does amazing things with seafood, and their seared tuna with a potent wasabi is a favorite as an appetizer or entree. They have recently started breakfast/brunch service on weekends. This is a welcome addition as island options for traditional breakfasts are limited. I have not tried it yet, but I have many fond memories of breakfast in their former restaurants so I am certain they do a remarkable eggs Benedict and crab cakes. I encourage our readers to support all of our restaurants during these difficult times, and I certainly hope you drop by the Kritikos Grill. Say hello to Larry and his staff and enjoy some very good Greek and American food. Galveston’s annual restaurant week begins February 1. This is a popular event where each participating restaurant offers a special fixed price multi-course lunch and dinner menu. Normally only a week long, this year it has expanded to include the entire month of February. Kritikos Grill is participating. I hope to see you there. C U R TA I N G O I N G U P ETC SLATES THE MUSICAL OF MUSICALS (THE MUSICAL!), IN REHEARSAL FOR ART; DR. FAUCI PREDICTS BROADWAY REOPENING By: Paul Hager a joke and withholds none of his thoughts. Serge then confronts Marc on other matters, including Marc’s lack of standards to judge art. As this battle begins their friend, the hapless Yvan gets pulled into the discussions, but his attempts at peacemaking only stoke the fire. ETC will open THE MUSICAL OF MUSICALS (The Musical!) Friday, March 5 with performances continuing through Saturday, April 3rd. With a book by Eric Rockwell and Joanne Bogart, music by Eric Rockwell, and lyrics by Joanne Bogart, THE MUSICAL OF MUSICALS is a hysterical parody of musicals and at the same time challenges the true musical aficionado. In a comic satire of musical theatre genres, one story becomes five musicals, each in the distinctive style of a different musical theatre composer. Performances are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings at 8:00pm. There are two Sunday matinees on March 14th and March 21st at 2:30pm. I am not familiar with this show [Please don’t make me turn in my Musical Theatre Fanatical Geek membership card!] but can’t wait to see it – it sounds like a hoot and a holler.

ETC also recently held open auditions for all roles in their upcoming production of ‘ART’ by Yasmina Reza (translated by Christopher Hampton) and is excited to announce that the guest director for the production will be Eric Dourmet. Performances will be May 7th – May 22nd. Artistic Director Kim Mytelka describes the production as follows: How much would you pay for a painting? This simple, yet not so simple, question creates a slowly growing bonfire in Yasmina Reza’s Tony- and Olivier-Award winning intellectual comedy about the lives of three longtime friends, the meaning of art and life, and the lengths we go to protect those we care about. Serge buys an expensive painting of modern art. His friend Marc thinks the painting is

During a virtual conference presented by the Association of Performing Arts Professionals January 9, Dr. Anthony S. Fauci said he believed that theatres could be safe to open for business sometime in the fall, according to The New York Times. That prediction, however, depends on the rollout of the vaccine and the country reaching herd immunity, vaccinating between 70 and 85 percent of the country. “If everything goes right, [herd immunity] will occur sometime in the fall of 2021,” Dr. Fauci said, “so that by the time we get to the early to mid-fall, you can have people feeling safe performing onstage as well as people in the audience.” Dr. Fauci also explained that theatres that possess proper air filters and good ventilation may be able to reopen without restrictions—other than theatregoers wearing masks, which may need to be worn for the foreseeable future. Producers have stated that reduced capacity, for instance, is one of the major roadblocks in the financial viability of reopening. “I think you can then start getting back to almost full capacity of seating,” Dr. Fauci said. He also urged more research on theatres’ ventilation quality, referring to a German study that suggested an August indoor concert, assembled by scientists, had “low to very low” impact on the spread of the coronavirus when there was adequate ventilation, limited capacity, and strict hygiene protocols. Another suggestion was to ask audience members show proof of a negative virus test, as is now required by some U.S. airlines. Dr. Fauci stresses that the battle is not just the development of the vaccine, but also ensuring it is administered on a wide enough scale, which would demand both effective allocation and

trust from the general public. Given Broadway and the New York’s economic reliance on tourism, this would need to happen on a national scale. “It’s really going to be up to us as a community to realize that getting vaccinated is the gateway to getting out of this dilemma that we’re in.” “We’ll be back in the theatres,” he said. “Performers will be performing, audiences will be enjoying it. It will happen.”Currently, all Broadway shows will remain dark through May 30.

Update from The Grand from The Galveston Daily News: Operators of the Grand 1894 Opera House, 2020 Postoffice St., had hoped to resume limited capacity shows by this month. But Maureen Patton, executive director of the popular live performance venue, thought better of it as COVID cases rise in the county. Patton hopes to reopen the venue this summer. Even then, it will sell tickets for only about 200 of its 1,000 seats and require masks, she said. And some large-scale shows won’t happen at all for the foreseeable future, she said. “When we do a major show, a Broadway show, there are usually as many as 30 or 40 people that are going to be on stage at some point,” Patton said.

I had an idea the other day while I was out riding around in my ol’ scarab. It’s not like me to have many thoughts in a day, but here is what had me thinking...

Like I was saying, I really enjoy television commercials. I have a secret crush on Flo, the spokesperson for Progressive insurance. I can’t get enough of her. Sad, I know. I started thinking, what do Flo and these other TV commercial actors make in income? What do the advertising companies they represent pay them? I was guessing the most popular of them do really well, so I did a little digging and found out just how well. Here is a list of some of the most popular TV commercial actors and what they make money wise... I’m telling you, my friends, we are in the wrong business.

Famous TV-Commercial Actors Flo - Progressive Insurance spends a ton of money on TV advertising and a big chunk of that money goes to the insurance company’s star spokesperson: Flo. The insurance-obsessed character has been played by actor Stephanie Courtney since 2008. More than a decade later, Courtney is still going strong in Progressive’s ad campaigns. Her fine work has netted her an estimated salary of $800,000 per year, according to Forbes.

Billy Mays - Ask anyone who watched latenight TV during the 2000s and they will tell you that Billy Mays was the king of pitching products that you had no idea you needed. While he threw his impeccable salesmanship behind everything from ridiculously named products like the Ding King and the Big City Slider Station, May’s most famous ads were for OxiClean, which he started doing in 2000. The late pitchman passed away in 2009 with a net worth reported at $10M. Allstate - Dennis Haysbert is a well-known actor for his work outside of commercials. He’s had memorable roles in movies like “Major League” & TV shows like “24,” just to name a couple. Allstate has put his booming voice to use in its TV ads since 2003, having him say the slogan, “Are you in good hands?” Based on his history as a spokesperson with Allstate, Haysbert commands $4 million a year to work exclusively in their ads.

Toyota - When you have seen the Toyota ads in the past several years, you’ve seen Laurel Coppock, smiling in her signature red outfits. She landed her major commercial gig with help from a background in improv comedy. The former Groundlings performer has been playing Jan, a Toyota salesperson, since 2012 and has made some serious money in the role. Estimates put her in that elite category of making $1 million a year for her high-profile spokeswoman gig. 52

WAVES MAGAZINE | FEBRUARY 2021

Old Spice - Proctor & Gamble is one of the biggest advertisers in the world. One of their most visible brands is Old Spice. Isaiah Mustafa was a regular presence in those spots during the 2010s, showing off his chiseled form and deep voice as a mythical figure that came to be known simply as Old Spice Guy. Mustafa’s net worth has been reported at $5 million, meaning he was making an estimated $5000,000 during the decade.

Farmers Insurance - Actor J. K. Simmons is the ad spokesperson for Farmers Insurance. Simmons first became widely known for his role on television as Dr. Emil Skoda on NBC’s “Law & Order”. He is most notable for his Oscar-winning role in the movie Whiplash. For Farmers Insurance, Simmons portrays Professor Nathaniel Burke of the University of Farmers. The “We know a thing or two because we’ve seen a thing or two” actor has a net worth of $16 million. AT&T - Milan Vaybntrub is a well-known commercial actor and spokesperson for AT&T. While she originally played her character, Lily Admas, in 2013 up until 2016, she reprised her role in 2020. Vayntrub has had roles in Silicon Valley and This Is Us. Her biggest role is voicing Doreen Green/ Squirrel Girl in the Marvel Rising franchise. It’s estimated her AT&T role pays her $700,000 a year.

Dos Equis - Stately looking actor Jonathan Goldsmith became a TV ad icon in 2007 when he landed the role as “The Most Interesting Man in the World” in a series of ads for Dos Equis beer. His memorable spots led to a massive boom for Dos Equis, which saw sales increase by 116% in the first five years they aired. Goldsmith has amassed a reported net worth of $8 million, earning over $1 million a year while playing the part.

Trivago - It seems a lot of people have a crush on Tim Williams, the Trivago guy, since he debuted in ads for the travel search engine company in 2013. The actor tells TV viewers about the wonders of Trivago while giving off an everyman silver-fox vibe. Williams was a veteran of projects in Germany before Trivago made him a star in the U.S. He reportedly has a net worth of $5 million, which equates to about $700,000 a year. Wendy’s - If you were watching TV in the mid-80s, you will remember seeing Clara Peller pop up in breaks during your favorite shows. Peller became an unlikely commercial star at the age of 83, when she landed a role in a Wendy’s spot that would become a classic. In the ad, she demanded to know, “Where’s the beef?” when looking at a burger offered by a fastfood competitor. The catchphrase became an instant hit and Peller was quickly locked up by Wendy’s, making a salary of $500,000 a year. Mr. Whipple - A vintage commercial star, actor Dick Wilson became an icon for his performances in Charmin ads for about 20 years, starting in the mid1960s. The part he played was Mr. Whipple, a neurotic grocery store owner who would admonish customers for squeezing the Charmin toilet paper before doing the same thing when no one was looking. Wilson made as much as $300,000 a year for the part.

Close-up on: PATRICK LEMIRE NON-SLIP LOOP KNOT

T

he loop knot is another of those simple rigging methods that have been around for many years. It is not only simple, but it works well in a variety of tying methods and the cost is zero — sounds pretty good to me. When a mono knot is tied tightly against a hook, jig or plug’s attachment eye, the stiffness of the mono will definitely restrict the movement somewhat of whichever of them is behind it. This stiffness will vary by manufacturer, type and size of the mono. Some loop knots are designed to snug up tightly against the eye when the line comes tight. . . something about that bothers me. I want my loop knot to stay a loop, slip bothers me, again. A couple of those which are designed to slip and tighten against the eye are the Uni and the Two-Wrap Hangman’s Knot. Some of those that don’t slip are Homer’s knot, the Perfection Loop, the Rapala Knot and the Non-Slip Loop Knot. A loop knot at the hook’s eye gives the same benefits as a much more expensive hook with a welded or solid metal ring in its eye. The added motion the loop knot allows lets you impart the motion desired to your presentation with less effort on your part. The current adds to it also, that’s a more natural look, again for free. Whatever you’re tied to, its movement will naturally increase. This greater range of motion gives your presentation a more lifelike, natural look. Tying up this particular non-slip loop knot in your 40-100 lb. mono main line or leader goes like this: Tie an overhand knot 8-10” from the end of your mono line/leader. Now, pass the end of the leader through the hook, jig or plug’s leader attachment eye, then back through the overhand knot as shown at “A” on the illustration. Pull the leader’s end through the overhand loop far enough to get the approximate size of the mono eye 56

WAVES MAGAZINE | FEBRUARY 2021

at the attachment eye you desire. Next, wrap the mono’s tag end 3-4 times around the leader then headed back through the overhand knot, as at the illustration’s “B”; use 2-3 turns with 100 to 80 lb. mono. The third part of the illustration, “C”, shows the tag end of the leader passed through the overhand knot. After moistening with saliva, pull on the tag end to snug the turns around the main line/leader. Now pull on the main line and hook to complete the tightening of this non-slip mono loop knot. During this tying and tightening procedure, keep a couple of things in mind. First, use a tight, secure grip at all times for safety, since there is a sharp hook involved that doesn’t have a brain — you have to supply that. Second, make adjustments as necessary throughout this process to keep the mono loop the size you are looking for. At the bottom of the illustration is the completed look of this non-slip loop knot after the tag end is cut off to about 1/8” length. When using this non-slip loop knot on a baited hook, that added natural “swim” effect applies to strip baits as well as whole, dead or live baitfish. Don’t forget to occasionally give your bait an “alive but in trouble” movement with a sharp but small twitch of your rod tip. This “free motion” loop connection will definitely give your bait presentation a better chance of being eaten by your targeted predator. See the added motion that this non-slip loop knot allows your bait to have by looking at it about 3-4 feet below the surface of the water at boat side. Let the boat’s rocking, or a rod tip twitch set it in motion and you’ll see the plus that this loop knot brings. A true “see test” would be to tie up separate rigs, one with the mono knot tight at the “eye”, one with the “loop” connection, but that would be going to the extreme. If the benefits already mentioned aren’t obvious, just believe me, they are definitely there.

Using the Non-Slip Loop Knot is a case of something old being pointed out that will heighten your chances of a hookup. New, or recycled, add this loop knot to your fishing arsenal or just use it again and out of semi-retirement. I know that I’m guilty of forgetting old tricks that have worked for me in the past — recycling this one is a prime example. There is an old saying, “Better is the enemy of good enough”. While that’s true many times, using the Non-Slip Loop Knot for your mono connection to a hook, plug or jig eye goes against that line of thought.

A Holistic Solution to Age Old Ailments Downtown Currents | by: Christy Monroe

After a successful run at their previous location and establishing themselves as a customer-oriented business that is there to serve and heal people, A Holistic Solution has been expanded and up and running at their newer location, 2319A Strand Street, right next door to La King’s Confectionery. EMFs (Electromagnet Frequencies) have become a priority for research, according to the National Institutes of Health. Ailments such as wound healing, pain, swelling, depression, anxiety, and cellular dysfunctions have all shown promising results when wearers of “Charged Frequency” items are introduced to balancing themselves with the EMF infused jewelry. A Holistic Solution is known for their jewelry that is infused with the same electromagnetic frequencies found in Earth. This is not a new concept, but rather dates to the original research of Nikola Tesla and his studies of high frequencies, transfers of energy, and high potential currents in the 1800s. Customers can also find tuned knives to carry in a pocket if they don’t feel they will wear a piece of jewelry at all times, which is the recommended protocol for the full benefits. Along with their gorgeous healing and functional pieces of jewelry, the new location offers more foot traffic so they can serve more people with more space for displays. This allows for healing items such as an abundance of minerals, rocks, and crystals, along with incense and essential oils. Intricate and unique dream catchers hang alongside a vast array of selenite and Himalayan salt lamps, which have also been found to absorb allergens in the air and offer a sense of balance in a home or office. Balance is the key to the whole approach. Being grounded to the Earth, such as walking barefoot on the ground, is the first experience most people have with feeling as if

60

WAVES MAGAZINE | FEBRUARY 2021

they are more in control of their balance. When customers enter the store, they are offered a free balance test along with a sample of pain patches that are also infused with EMFs. The balance test consists of extending arms out, standing on one foot, and then experiencing another person pushing down on their arms. Falling to one side can show a need for having that grounding or balancing, which is then found once the customer dawns a piece of the frequency jewelry and the test is repeated. Most customers are in awe of how much more balanced they are once the jewelry is on their body. With the soft music, the essential oils wafting in the air, and the surrounding visuals of healing crystals, customers find themselves with a sense of Zen and ready to learn more about this holistic solution to many of their problems. Open Monday- Sunday 11am-6pm, A Holistic Solution is ready to educate everyone on the healing powers of EMFs and find just the right piece of frequency jewelry in stainless steel, tungsten, or sterling silver. with J an & Dea n Hi Jan & Dean. Last year Valentine’s Day was one of the happiest days of my life. My boyfriend took me out to a very romantic dinner at a 5-star restaurant. During our dinner, my boyfriend and I made a lovely champagne toast. At the bottom of the champagne glass was an absolutely beautiful engagement ring. My boyfriend went down on one knee and proposed marriage to me right then and there. I was breathless. I couldn’t wait to say YES. The entire restaurant gave us a standing ovation. I was ecstatic with happiness and joy. Getting married was all we talked about for the next several months. We were both so excited. Then, all of a sudden, my boyfriend/fiancé stopped talking about it. He has not spoken one sentence about getting married for the past several months. I am still wearing my ring and consider us engaged, even though he never talks about it anymore. Recently I think I have discovered what his problem is. Through mutual friends, I have found out that my fiancés’ mother threw a total fit when she found out her son was engaged to me. She has never really liked me, and I have heard that she demanded to her son that he not marry me. I am heartbroken over this. I love my fiancé very much and I believe that he still loves me. What should I do Jan and Dean? Should I confront my fiancé and tell him what I have heard? Should I ask him if this is why we never discuss our engagement anymore? I really need your help. Hannah Is Heartbroken

H

ello Hannah. Well, all I can say is run, don’t walk, to the nearest exit. I can’t tell you how many people send in questions that have to do with a snarky soon-to-be or current mother-in-law. Let’s face it, your guy is a mamma’s boy.

Listen to your brain and not your heart when it comes to his explanation to you. Make him talk and spill the beans. Get to the truth and nothing but the truth. He owes you that! Honesty and communication are important throughout any relationship or marriage. If he won’t fess up, then please run away from this relationship. There are plenty of nice men out there that aren’t mamma’s boys or that would have the courage to break up a relationship they no longer want. You deserve better, Hannah. Good luck.

H

i there Hannah. It sure seems like we get our share of mamma’s boy situations. In this case, I’m not sure your guy is a mamma’s boy. It seems to me like he could be an “I’m getting cold feet” guy.

Of course, it could be both. My approach to life is to always take the direct route. Don’t take the side roads and detours. Just come straight out and ask him what his problem is. No beating around the bush allowed. Ask him very bluntly why he is no longer discussing your proposed wedding. Ask why he never talks about your marriage plans anymore. Demand an honest answer. Tell him that if he no longer wants to marry you, to just have the backbone to tell you so. I know it would hurt to hear that, but at least you would know exactly where things stand between the two of you. As always, honesty is the best policy. I hope things work out for you.

Whether your sources are reliable or not, sit down with your boyfriend/fiancé and cut to the chase. You might just find out that he has gotten cold feet and it doesn’t have anything to do with his mother. That the mother thing is just a rumor. HAVE A QUESTION FOR JAN & DEAN? Go to wavesgalveston.com & ask away. You just might have your question answered next month. 64

Resilience

I

f nothing else, the Islanders of Galveston are “resilient”! We have endured one of the most trying times in recent memories. 2020 was a full year of heart ache and fear. We dodged 2 massive hurricanes that devastated our neighbors to the east.... stay strong Louisiana. Our prayers are with you! But more importantly, we all dealt with the COVID-19 pandemic which forced us to hunker down and isolate from family and friends. The cost of a year-long disruption will not be known for a long time. Many of us suffered with the illness and survived, while many lost friends and loved ones. Our ability to make a living was, and is, still being tested. Galveston Island is mainly a tourist attraction and many of our workers are in the service and music industry. Many of the restaurants and music venues were ordered to reduce their patrons to 25% - 50%. Many

of our businesses rely on locals to help sustain them in the winter or “offseason” and to hold on till tourism picks up. It was difficult to get people out, but because of our creativity and resilience many people found ways to support our businesses. Not to say it has been easy or even if some of our businesses will survive, but knowing how resilient Islanders are I have faith we will make it and 2021 will begin a new chapter for the island. We’ve survived so many trials and tribulations throughout our history, and just like the past, we came back stronger and even more determined to make our island a great place to live. “I believe this to be true for Islanders in 2021.Join me in praying for our tiny island......hope to see all my island friends in 2021!”

Reflections

A Letter From D

ear Galveston. While I am a relatively new resident of Galveston, I have come to love the people who inhabit this historically rich island and I feel proud to share my perspective. I have dedicated my social work career life to serving the aging population and I continue to be honored in doing so. Meanwhile, as I age and enter the senior citizen population myself, I reflect upon my experiences in helping so many before me, to cope with their many life changes and multiple losses that accompany aging. We all expect to age gracefully. And so, we should. But unfortunately, this is not always the case. Many times, our geriatric population suffer from age-related diseases, pain and discomfort associated with their medical diagnoses, and the challenges associated with loss of functions such as hearing, vision and other maladies. To compound these issues, many of our aging population face isolation, grief and sadness.

Retirement & Assisted Living Facility 2228 Seawall | Galveston

The Covid-19 global pandemic has pushed these challenges to an even greater extent for all, but especially so, for our seniors. Seniors who remain living in the community and those in care facilities, are frightened. They face limited resources, increased isolation and a mortality rate not known in previous years. And so, I call upon our community members to join me in protecting, celebrating and cherishing our seniors! Check in on your aging neighbor. Take some soup, make sure he/she has electricity, food and basic comforts. Tell them you care. Because I know that each of us has the capacity to do this and to really mean it from our hearts. If you need any information on resources available to seniors, feel free to contact me anytime! Thank you for taking the time to love a Senior!

Mulch

A Gardener’s Friend!

fall, add an additional 3 inches of mulch to your gardens and beds. The Big Question Is What Type Of Mulch? Shredded hardwood mulch is the best choice for a groomed look in your gardens. The microorganisms that are needed to break down the types of wood in this mulch are native to our soils. This means that the mulch will be turned into compost posthaste.

W

hen it comes to growing happy plants, mulch is the one thing you can do and, in every situation, it is the right choice. The benefits of mulch are many. Mulch keeps roots cool in hot weather. Mulch retains moisture and helps conserve water. Mulch protects the soil and its microorganisms. And last but certainly not least- mulch breaks down into compost which is the BEST fertilizer for your plants. When mulch begins to break down into compost, you will see little white threads of fungus running through the layers closest to the soil. This is NOT a problem; this is a GOOD thing. Leave it alone and let it be.

If you aren’t so concerned with aesthetics, use shredded leaves and pine needles. These will break down quickly and make GREAT compost. Shredded Cedar is a great choice for deterring insects and doing all the things that mulch does, but it will take longer to break down into compost. Cypress does not make a very good mulch because the cypress will petrify versus break down into compost. You then have a layer of material that is a lot like concrete.

Mulch, Mulch, Mulch!

Because mulch breaks down into compost, there is no need to rake out old mulch when it is time to put down new mulch. About once every six months, in spring and

Karaoke is a favorite if you own a machine! Duties that need to be done on a daily basis include acting as a receptionist and answering phone calls, preparation of rooms for incoming families, helping in the business office, cooking and baking, playing Bingo and hosting family activities as well as providing “arts and crafts” sessions.
