The accessibility of fishing in and near Aransas Pass and Ingleside is abundant, with numerous locations from which to choose. Steadman’s Flats, from which this publication gets its name, is an area located between the Intracoastal Waterway and Morris and Cummings Cut near Aransas Pass, The Flats offer an extensive grass flat that features sandy potholes and deep water borders on all sides. Primarily known as a redfish haven, its quick access to deep water makes it a good spot for am-

bushing trout and flounder as well. The City of Aransas Pass, known as Harbor City, is located at the intersection of two major waterways – Laguna Madre and Redfish Bay. Aransas Pass has a rich history in the development of the Coastal Bend’s fishing industry. The Intercoastal Waterway (ICW) is intersected by the Aransas Shrimp Channel, giving Aransas Pass access to some fishing in the Coastal Bend in every direction. The primary fishing area is Redfish

Fishing the Area Bay, also called Bird Island. The bay is a triangular-shaped area between Aransas Pass, which borders it on the north, and Port Aransas. To the south is the Corpus Christi Ship Channel. Redfish Bay is actually a complex of islands, grass flats, and channels with the only deep water located on its southern edge next to the Corpus Christi Ship Channel. The grassy flats around Bird Island in the upper portion of Redfish Bay produce redfish and trout throughout the year.

The 14,000 acres of fragile grass flats is a rich generator of nutrients for all of the area bay systems and has been designated by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department as a State Scientific Area. Since 2006, the area has been designated as a no-prop zone which makes it illegal to run a boat through the seagrass in a way that would cause them to be uprooted. The restriction does not prohibit access by boats or going through the area as long as the grass is not disturbed. To be in com-

pliance with the Seagrass regulation, boaters can drift through the area using a push pole or electric trolling motor. The Aransas Channel is also known as the Shrimp Channel or the Shrimp Boat Channel due to the fact it was the main path for the massive gulf shrimp boat fleet housed at Conn Brown Harbor in Aransas Pass. In addition to being a prime navigation feature of the Redfish Bay complex, fishing along various grassy shores and cuts off of

Ingleside by the Bay is a small water front community south of the city. Ingleside Cove separates the two communities and is the location of Cove Park, a water front park with boat ramps, docks and picnic areas. Red drum, commonly called redfish, is a bay fish known for it is aggressive fight when hooked, and for also for its edibility. Many guided fishing trips focus on catching redfish which attracts anglers from around the world to the area. The redfish’s most distinguishing mark is one large black spot on the upper part of the tail base. It is not uncommon to see multiple spots, but one having no spots is extremely rare. Scientists believe the black spot

The most frequently caught game fish in local waters is the Speckled Trout, known by the scientific community as the Spotted Seatrout, and locally referred to simply as a “trout” or a “spec.” The seatrout is not actually a trout, but a member of

near the tail helps fool predators into attacking the red drum’s tail instead of its head, which allows the fish to escape. The daily bag limit for the red drum is three for keepers which must be a minimum length of 20 inches and maximum of 28 inches. During a license year, one red drum over the maximum length limit may be kept if a properly completed Red Drum Tag is attached to the fish. When a license is purchased, the buyer also receives one Bonus Red Drum Tag.

These yearly tags are in addition to the daily bag limit. For the first three years of its life, a redfish lives in the bays or near passes.

It then moves from the bays to the Gulf of Mexico. As the large adults move to the gulf, possibly for spawning, it is known as

the “bull red run.” The young redfish feeds on small crabs, shrimp and marine worms. As they mature, crabs and shrimp con-

Anglers who want to use artificial lures often choose small spoons which can be used in shallow water, and weedless ones in heavy or floating seagrass. Floating or shallow-running fish plugs are often used over the grass flats. Shrimp-like plastic worms and jigs are also popular. If bait is in a column of water, the redfish will take advantage of the opportunity, but in general they are bottom feeders. If they are feeding in shallow waters with heads down in

the seagrass, their tail may be above the surface of the water. This is known as “tailing.” They are often found in water so shallow their backs are exposed while they are swimming. During cold spells, redfish may be found in tidal creeks and rivers since they can also live in freshwater. The skill involved and the excitement of catching redfish has led to the establishment of several fishing tournament trails specifically to test angler’s skill in catching the prized redfish.

cause a rise in salinity in the bays. The temperatures drop during the winter months and bring cold, cloudy days, at which time bait fish move to deeper water so the trout follow them. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department sets the daily bag limits for

seatrout, and the limits vary in different parts of the Gulf Coast (see the chart on page 26). Because of its relative abundance, excellent flaky meat, and good flavor, speckled trout are popular not only as a sport fish, but also as table fare.

Coastal Bend waters are home to the southern flounder, a unique game fish highly-sought after for it’s edibility and the unique techniques used to catch it. The flounder swims near the bottom of the bay, parallel to the bottom, and uses its camouflage to ambush prey from drop offs, current swept points, and by burying itself in the sandy flats. Due to the fact they spend their life on the bottom of the bay and gulf, adult flounder’s eyes are on the same side of their head. They are not born

Mickey’s Bar & Grill

By Donna Woolston Contributing Writer

Mickey’s Bar and Grill in Aransas Pass, an eatery with marina views and outdoor seating, is the setting for a story of friendship. Mickey Hampton and Randy Matthews met in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, but their friendship was developed in Aransas Pass. Matthews, the current owner, recalled becoming friends with Hampton, “It was the ‘70s. He had a bait stand here, but he was a utilities contractor. He would call my company when he needed heavy equip-

ment, like a backhoe. I would make sure it got down here. And then we just hit it off. We fished together for 20 years.” Hampton was diagnosed with lung cancer and passed away in 1996. Hampton’s wife hated mosquitoes and fishing and he didn’t want her to “have to deal with a bait stand” after his passing. He asked his 20-year fishing buddy to buy the bait stand. So, Matthews bought the bait stand as a way to help his friend. Matthews said he continued to call the bait stand “Mickey’s” to honor his friend. Then, he decided to

start making breakfast burritos to sell to the fishermen who were his customers. Then more people, who weren’t bait stand customers, came to buy the burritos. “At first, I just wanted to keep the bait stand alive in Mickey’s honor,” Matthews said. “But, I decided to roll the dice and we started making burgers. Really good burgers. Then we just kept expanding.” Mickey’s now has a full kitchen and menu, lower and upper decks with seating, and an RV park. “It’s all still named after Mickey. And his grandkids and great

grandkids come to eat.” Like many Aransas Pass businesses and residents, Mickey’s Bar and Grill suffered damage in Hurricane Harvey. Matthews said when he first saw the devastation after the storm, he felt despair. “It took the fire out of my butt,” he said. “At first, I thought we couldn’t recover. But then we just got to work.” Mickey’s Bar and Grill didn’t lose any employees in the Harvey aftermath. Matthews paid them to help with the cleanup and repair of the building and property. “Even if they could just sweep

up, everyone stayed and helped,” he explained. Matthews continued, “I don’t mean there’s anything cool about a hurricane, but it was cool to see the community work together. I have great employees and it was cool to see them work hard to bring back Mickey’s.” Although there was still work to be done, the bar and grill reopened two weeks after landfall. “It aged me to see all that. It lowered my energy level. In a way it’s been two years of hell. Nothing cool about it. But, I am proud of Mickey’s and the employees,” Matthews said.

Mickey’s Bar and Grill never advertised, but the restaurant is popular with locals and tourists. Fishers and fishing guides are regular customers. Mickey’s kitchen uses original recipes and makes everything to order. “Nothing is premade or frozen. Sometimes that means service is slow. But the service is good,” Matthews explained. Matthews concluded by praising his employees. “I have been fortunate. They are all great and I couldn’t have done any of this without them,” he said.

The food at Mickey’s Bar and Grill is never pre-made or frozen, but some customers have to be reminded not to share it with seagulls. Tourists and locals alike love to come to Mickey’s. This family came from Huntsville for a track meet and chose Mickey’s for lunch. Richard and Carol Pifer are Rockport residents who don’t tire of the food or the view. Mickey’s Bar and Grill has views of a marina

from its upper deck. Ashley and Trish are waitstaff employees at Mickey’s Bar and Grill. The owner, Randy Matthews has high praise for his staff. “I couldn’t do it without them,” he said. The sign at the entrance to the bar and grill still says “Mickey’s.” It honors Mickey Hampton, the owner of the bait stand which stood in the same location. Photos by Donna Woolston

Coastal Pharmacy

Coastal Pharmacy is a fast, friendly, local independent pharmacy that has been serving Ingleside and surrounding areas since September of 2018.

They accept Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance. They sell and deliver prescriptions, over the counter medications and medical equipment.

Delivery is free. The pharmacy is open Monday-Saturday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and is located at 2334 TX 361 Ste. 178 in Ingleside.

A small children’s play area and restroom facilities are also in this part of the marina. The center of the marina includes RV sites, boat ramps, fish cleaning tables, and a bait stand. Mickey’s, a burger and seafood specialty restaurant with full bar, rises above the marine to offer a view of Redfish Bay. The facility also features an on-site casual restaurant and bar - Mickey’s, which serves the best seafood and

burgers around and features a great view. In the 1950s, the San Patricio County commissioners court and the voters approved the creation of Navigation District No. 1, leading to the construction of what is now the current marina. The West Marina, which now consists of covered boat slips, was constructed using bond monies. A second bond issue was passed by the voters in the late 1990s which

allowed a marina office and the East Marina to be developed. Recently, marina expenses are covered by marina, thus no more tax money has been needed to support the marinas. The San Patricio County Navigation District is led by a board of directors who are appointed by the San Patricio county judge and commissioners. For more information, call (361) 758-1890 or come see the beautiful facility.
