Boerne Mayor Tim Handren made a surprise visit to the Boerne Grill during late summer to present a special proclamation to owners David and Matt Rice. The mayor stood on a chair inside the business as he read the proclamation, which among other things declared a special Boerne Grill Day in the city. The mayor said occasionally he wants to do the same thing for other businesses in Boerne.

elcome to the heart of Texas! Boerne is both literally and figuratively an entryway into one of the state’s most beautiful regions, the Texas Hill Country. While just a couple of decades or so ago, Boerne (pronounced Bur-nee) could easily have been considered “forgotten,” today it is a town where technology and times past enjoy equal balance. Boerne is recognized across the United States as a desirable place to live. Listed by the U.S. Census Bureau as one of the country’s fastest growing regions, the area’s rapid expansion has meant numerous new housing subdivisions as well as an influx of industry, business and tourism. Despite the growth, Boerne strives to hold on to its warm, small-town origins. Oak trees still grow together in canopies above many city streets while a trip to the grocery store almost guarantees an encounter with friends and neighbors. The surrounding countryside is lush and arid, dramatic and pastoral. Streams and rivers soften the sharp-edged limestone topography. Roosters and goats, still raised within city limits by a few old-timers, may wander about under cell phone towers that have risen within the last few years. Established by a young group of Germans who considered themselves classical philosophers – or Free Thinkers – Boerne originally didn’t allow churches inside the city limits. Today, however, the town is home to numerous religious congregations. WELCOME CONTINUED ON • 6 Gateway to the TEXAS HILL COUNTRY 3

Boerne is rich with history

B

oerne, the county seat of Kendall County, is bound by Cibolo Creek, Interstate 10 and Highway 87 about 30 miles northwest of San Antonio in the southern part of the county. In 1849, a group of German colonists from Bettina camped on the north side of Cibolo Creek, about a mile west of present-day Boerne. They called their new community Tusculum, after Cicero’s home in ancient Rome. In 1852, Gustav Theissen and John James laid out the town’s site and changed the name to Boerne in honor of Ludwig Börne, a German poet and publicist. Ironically, Mr. Börne never visited the town that was named after him. A post office was established in 1856 with August Staffell as postmaster. The community had only 10 houses in 1859, but it was chosen to be the county seat by a margin of 67 votes after the county was established in 1862. A courthouse was built in 1870 and is still in use, making it the second-oldest courthouse in Texas. Boerne developed the reputation of having a very healthful environment and quickly became known as a health resort. By 1884 it had five hotels, assorted businesses, and 250 residents. Cotton, wool and grain were the principal shipments, but timber, cedar posts, and building stone were also profitable commodities. The arrival of the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway in 1887 brought increased economic opportunity, and by 1890 the population of Boerne had risen to 800. Boerne residents voted to incorporate in 1909 and established a mayor-alderman form of city government. Also in that year they established the Boerne Independent School District. The population was reported at 950 in 1914, and the community prospered through the 1920s. The Great Depression of the 1930s, however, all but put an end to the tourism and cotton farming that had been staples of the local economy. The population fell from an estimated 2,000 in 1928 to 1,117 in 1931. It had risen to only 1,271 by the 1940s. In the 1950s, however, many residents turned to nearby San Antonio for employment, and Boerne became a bedroom community. The population grew at a slow but steady rate, reaching 2,169 in 1960. In the 1960s construction in neighboring Bexar County of the San Antonio Medical Center and the University of Texas at San Antonio, as well as the completion of Interstate 10, made Boerne even more attractive as a town from which to commute. Its population rose to 2,400 by 1970, 3,254 by 1980, and to 4,274 by 1990.

Main Plaza often is bustling with activity and has been providing a place for events and gatherings for decades.

In the 1990s the population exceeded 5,000, making Boerne eligible for Home Rule. This was voted in by its citizens in 1995. Accelerated growth in the late 1990s and early 2000s has increased the population to an estimated 10,471 according to the 2010 census. The estimated 2018 census showed a big jump with a population of almost 17,000, or an increase of about 63 percent. Kendall County boasts a population of about 45,000, according to 2018 census numbers, an increase of more than 30 percent from 2010. In spite of the influx of different ethnic groups, the German cultural tradition has dominated the community in many ways. The Boerne Gesangverein, or singing society, which was established in 1860, was an important social and recreational organization until it disbanded in 1977. German community organizations still active include the Boerne Schuetzen Verein (shooting club), which was formed in 1864, and the Boerne Village Band, which was formed about the same time as the singing society. Boerne has also held an annual celebration, the Berges Fest, since 1967. Gateway to the TEXAS HILL COUNTRY 5

Autumn is a special time in Boerne and throughout the Hill Country.

WELCOME CONTINUED FROM • 3 Also enormously important within the ranks of the city’s population is its volunteerism. Citizens selflessly donate countless hours not only to religious matters, but to social, educational, environmental, political and historical causes as well. The crown jewel of Boerne’s history is its quaint Main Street. Also called the Hill Country Mile, it is lined by many of the buildings that formed the vibrant core of the county’s “city life.” These structures, although admired by tourists, are still thought of as home by the town’s octogenarians. “That’s the house where I grew up,” one might point out, or “There’s the hospital where I was born,” or “The dry goods store that sold us fabric for our dresses.”

6 FALL/WINTER 2019-2020

And it’s not only long-timers and newcomers who are drawn to Boerne’s old structures apparently. Ghosts, it seems, are drawn to the buildings as well. For example, the lovely, ornate Joseph Dienger building on Main Plaza has an officially certified other-worldly occupant believed to be the building’s original owner, Joseph Dienger himself. Whether it’s shopping, visiting the area’s beautiful caves, exploring the local nature center, enjoying historically authentic exhibits, birding, cycling, hunting or hiking, Boerne provides the ideal blend of the urban and the rural. Close on one hand is an international airport, the Alamo, the San Antonio Riverwalk, Sea World of Texas, Six Flags Fiesta Texas, the San Antonio Zoo and numerous concert and museum venues. Nearby, on the other hand, is the unique and soughtafter beauty of the Texas Hill Country.

There’s always something fun at the Cibolo

T

he Cibolo Nature Center & Farm in Boerne is located on 162 acres of natural lands at Boerne City Park off Highway 46 just west of the Kendall County Fairgrounds. The Cibolo Nature Center’s mission is conservation of natural resources through education and stewardship. In 1988, Carolyn Chipman Evans, her husband, Brent Evans, and a handful of friends dreamed of protecting a segment of the precious Cibolo Creek in Boerne and the land around it as a wildlife preserve where families could enjoy and appreciate nature. Carolyn approached the City of Boerne to urge the restoration of disappearing marshland and the creation of nature trails on 100 acres of the existing Boerne City Park adjacent to the creek. The city’s cooperation, and Carolyn’s enthusiasm, brought a rebirth to the land and a renaissance of public concern for conservation of Boerne’s natural resources. Open to the public since Earth Day 1990, the Cibolo Nature Center & Farm today is a prime example of community caring. Thanks to thousands of volunteers’ dedicated work, the community is preserving its natural heritage for future generations. Across Cibolo Creek from the nature center is the Herff Farm. The 62-acre green space includes a farmhouse, barn and other structures built by one of the area’s original German immigrant families. In December 2009, it was listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The house also figured prominently in the early settlement of Boerne, was confiscated during the Civil War for a Confederate Prisoner of War camp and served as the site of one of the last Native American-settler conflicts. It was the summer home of Dr. Ferdinand Ludwig Herff, a medical pioneer in San Antonio and the greatgreat-grandfather of Carolyn Chipman Evans, the Cibolo Nature Center’s founding director. Its location at the confluence of Cibolo and Menger creeks makes it a key habitat area within the larger Cibolo Conservation Corridor. In 2007, the Friends of the Cibolo Wilderness, with help from supporters and foundations across Texas, purchased the farm in order to preserve its resources for current and future generations.

Among the many activities at the Cibolo Nature Center & Farm is story time.

As significant as the act of preservation has been, the people behind the Cibolo Nature Center and Herff Farm want to kick it up a notch. The farm will be an outdoor classroom for teaching the living skills we have nearly lost in little more than a generation, such as gardening, composting, beekeeping and rainwater harvesting. These and other simple skills for sustainable living will provide our community with practical ways to live in harmony with nature. Eventually, the Herff Farm will be part of Boerne’s public trail system, where families can take a walk through the farm and hike the nature trails over the creek and through the Cibolo Nature Center. For over 25 years, the Cibolo Nature Center has led the way in conservation education in our greater Central Texas neighborhood. With the addition of Herff Farm, these notable efforts will expand significantly as the Cibolo Nature Center and Farm becomes a thriving, new model of sustainable living for farming, gardening, beekeeping and water catchment, all while providing wideopen spaces to simply enjoy being outdoors. Learn more at www.cibolo.org. THE FARMERS MARKET AT THE CIBOLO The mission of The Farmers Market at the Cibolo is to provide area residents the opportunity to buy Hill Country grown and produced products and support local farmers and specialty vendors. BOERNE ISD Boerne Independent School District, nestled in the scenic Texas Hill Country, is a “destination district” for families who enjoy Boerne’s unique combination of rural roots, small town atmosphere and easy access to one of America’s largest cities (vibrant San Antonio is 30 miles southeast of Boerne). This supportive Boerne community places a high priority on education, reflected in the reputation for excellence that Boerne ISD has built and sustained through the years. Boerne ISD has an enrollment of more than 9,000 students who attend class at seven elementary schools, three middle schools, two high schools and an alternative campus. Boerne ISD is one of the fastest growing school districts in Texas. Enrollment realities and projections moved the community to pass a bond in 2016 that provides funding for two new elementary schools and a new middle school. With more than 1,000 faculty and staff, Boerne ISD is the largest employer in the community. Our teachers are dedicated professionals whose commitment to excellence is recognized consistently on regional, state and national levels.

COMFORT ISD The Comfort Independent School District is one of the finest school districts in the state of Texas. The district takes pride in cultivating hearts and minds. MISSION Comfort ISD ensures all students receive a premier education and ex-

It is a classical and Christian K-12 private school that pursues doing all things with excellence to the glory of God. Educators are dedicated to a Christcentered worldview and to the Geneva mission, locking arms with parents to provide a rigorous and time-tested education. The award-winning and accredited academics, athletics and arts programs uphold the classical ideal by teaching students to recognize what is

good, true and beautiful in every endeavor. Educators teach from a Christcentered worldview — everything students learn and do is evaluated according to the standard of God’s word. Geneva graduates enter the world wellspoken and uniquely equipped to lead as servants, scholars, athletes and artists in their individual contests. Located on 51 beautiful acres in Boerne, just north of San Antonio in the Texas Hill Country, the school provides a place for all students to be known, foster a small-town roll-up-your-sleeves style of family volunteerism to get things done and cultivate an outwardfocused community that actively loves its neighbors both inside and outside the school. Geneva is a welcoming, tight-knit community of people who trust and invest in each other with grace and grit. The school was formed in 1998 and began offering classes in 1999 to 13 students in kindergarten, first and third grade. The first senior class of 19 students graduated in May 2011. Good to the last bite

Boerne has a wide variety of places that will satisfy each and every appetite as dozens of restaurants, cafes, coffee shops and wineries dot the local landscape. Following is a brief sample of some of the dining establishments around the city as they appeared on The Boerne Star’s weekly food page.

The restaurant is known for its Texas barbecue offerings – brisket, ribs, sausage, turkey, pork and chicken – but also serves other items like meatloaf and enchiladas, which are on the daily special rotation. Prime rib and a tenderloin also are served as are sandwiches and massive baked potatoes.

MAGUE’S CAFÉ 934 N. MAIN ST. Mague’s Café is arguably one of Boerne’s busiest eateries, serving about 1,000 tortillas on an average Saturday. Almost every Tex-Mex classic is offered, from enchiladas to chalupas to a near-endless variety of breakfast tacos. Diners can also order more traditional Mexican fare, such as menudo and tripas.

FRITZE’S 926 N. MAIN ST. A good, old Texas country atmosphere greets guests when they come through the front doors. Country music plays in the background and guests can sit on wooden benches with Texas flag-panted backs. The walls are decorated with western flair.

BUMDOODLER’S 929 N. MAIN ST. When one thinks of Bumdoodlers, he or she may first remember that delicious piece of pie that was made from scratch. Or, the individual might recall the scrumptious sandwich that was made with homemade bread. Either way, the restaurant has been satisfying palates and sweet tooths for generations. The most popular of the 10 or so sandwiches on the menu is the Brainstorm. It features salami, ham, turkey and cheddar and swiss cheeses on a large bun. It’s served with lettuce, tomato, onion, mustard and mayonnaise. Other sandwiches come with roast beef, ham, pastrami, corned beef, salami, turkey or chicken salad. There is also a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Homemade soup also is on the menu with two or three different offerings each day. The most popular is broccoli and cheese, so it is served

daily. A chef and garden salad also are available and come with homemade dressing. Baked potatoes also are served. Then, of course, there are the desserts. Pies and cheesecakes are hot sellers.

DOG & PONY 1481 S. MAIN ST. Dog & Pony originally opened in 2011 as a nod to the two mascots in town, The Boerne High School Greyhounds and the Boerne Champion High School Chargers. And, the menu includes tributes to those schools, as well as to the Geneva School of Boerne. There is the Greyhound burger, advertised as American with bacon; the Charger burger with swiss cheese, mushrooms and caramelized onions; and the Eagle burger, which is American with a fried egg. There are also appetizers, salads and wraps, main dishes, sides, desserts and a children’s menu. The mascot burgers are very popular, but the best seller is the La Babia burger, which features a half-pound of Texas beef. Main dish selections include chicken fried ribeye, sirloin, grilled salmon, grilled chicken, chicken strips and fried chicken. There is also a salad bar.

259 BRANTLEY BISTRO 259 S. MAIN ST. The atmosphere at 259 Brantley’s Bistro centers on family and is located in the Olde Towne section of Boerne. It is known for its farmfresh items and features local, clean organic food featuring fresh Texas products. The bistro is a Go Texan restaurant. The Go Texan campaign began in 1999 to focus on the state’s agricultural products. Its purpose is to encourage consumers to seek and purchase Texas-made products. The lunch menu features various salads, burgers and sandwiches, including a daily special. The best seller is an axis burger, made with fresh venison. Whether the appetite is large or small, the Hungry Horse restaurant can accommodate and has been doing so in Boerne since 1993. The restaurant serves wholesome, authentic homestyle meals with a touch of southern flavor. The menu offers a variety of appetizers, salads, “Texas traditions,”

Besides the regular menu, Hungry Horse also offers various casseroles, which can feed as many as 20 people per order.

INFERNOS 1540 RIVER ROAD Zesty is the word used to describe what sets Infernos Pizza aside from the rest. The restaurant uses a wood-fired method to add flavor to its pizzas and uses its trademarked and signature Scorpion Pepper to add the zest, if preferred. Everything is made from scratch – whether it’s a sauces, breads and crusts, sandwich, salad, dressings or other menu items. And the crust is made from “high-end” flour with live yeast.
