WELCOME TO THE 18TH ANNUAL TEXAS MUSHROOM FESTIVAL

WELCOME TO THE 18TH ANNUAL

TEXAS MUSHROOM FESTIVAL

W

e are so excited to welcome all of our guests to our 2019 festival! One of our most important components, our volunteers, have put in numerous hours of work to make this festival happen. Alongside our volunteers, are our generous sponsors. Without their support through donations and services, we would not be operational. I hope both of these groups of people know what a difference they have made this year and how much they are appreciated by myself and our community. If you happen to bump into one of our volunteers or a sponsor this fall, be sure to extend a great big thanks! I hope that our guests enjoy their time in our quaint town. If you happen to extend your visit, be sure to check out our local bed and breakfast, along with our friendly hotel/motels we have available.

Beginning Saturday morning with the Shiitake 5K Run/Walk, you’ll have the opportunity to cheer on kids to adults as they compete! With so many delicious food vendors, you might have a difficult time choosing just one. Along with all of the tasty concoctions, there will be plenty of vendors set-up ranging from crafts, art, jewelry, knives, clothing boutiques, face painting, 4-H, American Legion, and most things in between. We welcome many of the same vendors year after year that help us celebrate our small

town. However, come with time to spare so that you are able to fully explore the 200+ vendors! The ever so popular “Taste of Texas“ venue will have wine tasting featuring local Texas Wineries, a Biergarten offering Texas Craft Beers, and live music. Don’t fret though! There are several artists, dancers, and musicians that will be performing throughout the festival all day. Stop by the Auto Showcase car show which features unbelievable cars, trucks, and motorcycles. If you need to take a minute to gather your thoughts from all of the outdoor excitement stop by the photography, art, and quilt show located on the square. Our festival promotes artists from many different genres and aspects. You’re sure to find something that you could sing and dance along to whether at the Center Stage or the Gospel

Music Stage. Of course, you’ll want to check out our souvenir booth located in front of the courthouse so you’ll always remember the great day you spent with us! We have t-shirts, hats, bags, wine, beer & cordial glasses, and posters. Payment for all these items as well as payments for events can be paid for with cash or credit card. If you pre-paid for any souvenirs at our new On-line Store, texasmushroomfestival.com, you can pick them up at the souvenir booth. Any pre-paid event tickets will be available at that particular event. Invite your family, friends, and neighbors to join us for this fun-filled day! We look forward to seeing you in October!

Best Wishes;

FESTIVAL OFFERS MUSHROOM FOR FUN

T

he Texas Mushroom Festival has grown into an event that attracts approximately 15,000 visitors to Madisonville each year. From very humble beginnings, the first event had exactly one tent, one entertainer, 10 T-shirts, and only a sprinkling of vendor booths. Technically it was a rainout, but the seed for a wonderful future was planted that day. Madisonville had long hosted an annual Saturday on the Square event. In 2002, a lone tent stood in the parking lot of The Woodbine Hotel, where Chef Reinhard Warmuth spent the day cooking up a smorgasbord of mushroom concoctions. To some extent, the rain itself may have helped build the momentum of the Texas Mushroom Festival, as it

re-directed many of those who braved the weather to the cooking tent that would expand 10-fold over the next 15 years. “That first year, everyone got under our tent because it was a tent and the mushroom chowder was warm,” said Susan Warmuth, former owner of the Woodbine Hotel. “I still remember the first mushroom T-shirt; there were only 10. That first year it only ranged from Rancho Viejo to First Baptist Church. We got together with

Entergy Team Texas – they had done some things to aid development in the town, and we wanted to learn how we can grow.” The obvious question must still be answered. Why mushrooms? Madisonville is The Mushroom Capital of Texas because we are very lucky to have Monterrey Mushrooms as a business in town and a community partner. Approximately 680,000 tons of mushrooms leave Monterrey’s facility every day. The festival continues to expand over the years to include many of the diverse attractions that exist today. One of the key elements of the festival is that its events appeal to a range of personal interests, aside from just mushrooms and shopping. The day begins early

with the Shiitake 5K Run, and throughout the afternoon events such as the Auto Showcase, Mushroom Cooking Demonstrations, Wine Tasting, Photography Contest, Quilt Show, Kids Zone, and more than 200 vendors make it truly a daylong experience. The Gala Dinner on Friday night has also added a touch of glamour to the Festival. The Biergarten was added to the list of activities in 2015, featuring Texas craft breweries and live entertainment that highlights the area! Ideas are already bouncing around about ways to continue to grow. We hope that you enjoy your time at the 18th Annual Texas Mushroom Festival and consider visiting Madisonville again in the future.

WELCOME TO THE 18TH ANNUAL TEXAS MUSHROOM FESTIVAL

2019 MUSHROOM FESTIVAL AMBASSADORS

T

he ambassadors for the 18th Annual Madisonville Mushroom Festival are Ashley Saucedo (Madisonville High School), Jordan Housley (North Zulch High School) and Samantha Moore (NZHS). The three students were chosen on Sept. 21 out of a large pool of candidates. “The ambassadors represent the festival’s ‘who’ and why’,” said Mushroom Festival President Jill Barnes. “We are honored to have the opportunity to have such involved, young and determined students demonstrate their enthusiasm and love for the community each and every year.” Most applicants are about as old as the festival itself and grew up attending the event every October. Like many citizens in Madison County, it has become a part of their DNA. “My father has worked at Monterey Mushroom for many years,” said Ashley Saucedo. “When I was little, he would volunteer at the Monterey booth at the festival and it was very exciting to see all of those people in line. Over the years, all of the memories and friends that I have created through the festival have been very significant in my life. Now it is a tradition and a must to go to the festival and help in any way that I can.” Saucedo is a member of the varsity band and tennis team at MHS and enjoys painting and spending time with her family. She applied for the opportunities the scholarship provides and because of her love for the festival. “To be a Mushroom Festival

Ambassador is to represent the young adult community in Madisonville,” said Saucedo. “I feel like I can bring a lot of creativity and responsibility to the position.” After her time at MHS, Saucedo has aspirations to attend college and travel. “Growing up, the festival was such a fun experience with so many places to see and different foods to eat,” said Jordan Housley. “I always love seeing the community come together to celebrate. The festival is a huge celebration of everything in Madison County and it highlights everything good about the people who live here.” Housley is a member of the basketball and baseball teams at NZHS as well as FCCLA and the Yearbook Club. He enjoys participating in community events and spending time with his family and friends in his free time. He applied because he thought it would be a good way to make his community proud and help further fund his education. “It means a lot that I can be a role model for Madison County,” said Housley. “I can be someone people can look up to in my community. Helping out with this festival seems like a really good way to help out with one of the wonderful parts of our place in Texas.” After NZHS, Housley plans to attend college to study psychology because of his desire to help others with their issues. He would like to work in a place where he can make a difference in people’s lives as a counselor or therapist.

Welcome to the 18th Annual Texas Mushroom Festival!

The 2019 Texas Mushroom Festival Ambassadors are (left to right): Ashley Saucedo of Madisonville High School, Jordan Housley of North Zulch High School and Samantha Moore of North Zulch High School. “I have lived in Madison County since second grade, so this festival has been a tradition in my family for many years now,” said Samantha Moore. “When I was younger, my absolute favorite thing was to get my face painted at the festival. Now, I love visiting the different booths and becoming aware of local businesses. This is the biggest event in Madison County, so it has gained great significance to our community over the years. It expands tourism, promotes agriculture, culinary and fine arts. It also provides opportunities for local organizations to raise revenue and give the members of the community a sense of pride.” Moore participates in FCCLA, for which she qualified for State twice, and has been an officer in student council for two years. She is also a member of the NZHS volleyball, basketball

and track teams. She enjoys spending time with her friends and family when she has free time. Moore decided to apply for the ambassadorship to surround herself with like-minded peers and expose herself to and event that will allow her to grow as a leader. “I have had two family members that were previous ambassadors and I am ecstatic to continue to tradition,” said Moore. “Being an ambassador means that I can help represent my community in a positive manner and welcome others from outside the community.” After graduating NZHS, Moore plans to attend Sam Houston State University in the fall of 2020 to earn a degree in education with a focus on kinesiology. She hopes to become a teacher and coach. The Mushroom Festival accepted candidates between the ages of 14 and 19 who will be attending and institution of post-secondary education within two years of the selection process. They also needed to be residents of Madison County currently enrolled in a public, private or home school. “These ambassadors very closely assimilate with the young people that go to school, work hard and have the great sense of community that is present throughout the surrounding area,” said Steve Carter, former chairman of the Mushroom Festival and current committee member. “Year after year, the festival has been blessed by these young people’s presence and we are extremely proud of all of them.”

MORE ABOUT MUSHROOMS W e’re at the Texas Mushroom Festival to celebrate the mushroom, a sometimes maligned, always tasty part of a meal. They may not give you superpowers like in the video game Super Mario Brothers, but are a good source of fiber and unsaturated fatty acids with low calorie content. Mushroom nutrients can help hydrate the skin and prevent hair loss. Mushrooms actually burn cholesterol! Folks don’t always equate Texas with mushrooms, but an article shared by Dr. Joe Masabni and Patrick Lillard with the Texas AgriLife Extension Service’s Department of Horticultue provides insight to the connections of mushrooms to the Lone Star State:

MUSHROOMS

The popularity of different species and varieties of mushrooms has increased in the past few years. The most popular variety, Agaricus bisporus, has three different strains. All are similar in holding quality and shelf life, differing basically in color. White, off-white and dark brown are the common colors. White mushrooms dominate the fresh market. Other mushroom varieties whose popularity is increasing include enoki, pleurotus and shiitake. Enoki mushrooms are creamy white with long slender stems that are topped with small round caps. They are mild flavored mushrooms with a slightly sweet taste and can be used fresh or cooked. Pleurotus mushrooms, also known as oyster mushrooms, are grayish brown with a delicate flavor and texture. The shiitake mushroom is a large, umbrella-shaped mushroom that is dark brown. With a meaty flavor, shiitake mushroom can be used raw or cooked.

CULTURE

It was formerly believed that darkness was required for growing good mushrooms. This is not true; mushrooms need proper compost, good sanitation and, most of all, a constant and suitable temperature with protection against drafts. The climate in the U.S. is not suitable for the commercial production of mushrooms out-of-doors. Therefore, they are grown in natural caves or cultured in carefully designed windowless buildings in which temperature, humidity and ventilation are precisely controlled. Oyster and shiitake mushrooms are grown on oak or elm logs by placing inoculated wood plugs into holes drilled at 4- to 6-inch intervals. Incubation takes three to five months before the logs sprout edible mushrooms. The more common white mushroom is in grown sterilized compost which has been specially mixed and inoculated with spores.

SELECTION

Freshness, color and shape are the three points generally considered when selection mushrooms. Avoid withered mushrooms as this is a sign of age. Mushrooms which look bright and attractive in the store can be refrigerated for four to five days with little effect. All mushrooms, however, will eventually oxidize and turn dark. Truffles are related to the mushroom but are bulbous and unimpressive looking. They are used in small quantities to flavor a variety of dishes.

FEATURED

BREWERIES LOOKING FOR GREAT BEER? IT’S HERE. THIS LIST WILL HELP YOU GET TO KNOW OUR FEATURED BREWERS.

ALTSTADT BREWING

Let’s face it — Germans know and love their beer. After all, they have been perfecting the art & science of brewing it for over 500 years. No surprise, fine German imports continue to garner the world’s highest awards, accolades and price tags. But Altstadt, unlike other premium imports, crafts it’s truly exceptional, authentic German style beer

here locally — in the historic charm of Fredericksburg. Old Fredericksburg, established by German immigrants back in the mid 1800s, is where Altstadt got its name sake from — literally translates to “old town” — where the heritage of old world German brewing first began. Today, Altstadt’s German brewmaster continues the time-honored traditions, crafting smooth, supremely drinkable beers, using only the highest quality, imported, 100 percent natural German ingredients and pure spring

water. After meticulous preparation, in a stateof-the-art facility second to none. In Spring 2018, Altstadt lets you taste, tour and enjoy every premium German beer they make without needing a passport! While there are many great breweries in America, few are as choice, distinctive and discriminating as Altstadt. Come for the beer, stay for the adventure and create memories that last a lifetime.

AUSTIN EASTCIDERS

Just like many preprohibition ciders, we’ve selected apples from Europe and Washington State. To

preserve freshness, the fruits are harvested and pressed at the orchard, then delivered to our cidery in Austin, Texas. These apple varieties have the bittersharp and bittersweet components that bring character to our drink. Only the finest apples can create the best cider. With this base of uncompromised fruit, we also use a white wine yeast which has been selected for aromatic retention and slow, cold fermentation tolerance. This helps preserve the natural, fruity nose and complex flavor you experience when enjoying this drink. This ferment is fed nutrients at key stages to allow the perfect transition of fruit sugar to alcohol, like

Once fermentation is complete, we use state of the art filtration for gorgeous clarity, without stripping components that add to mouthfeel. This is extremely important because it ensures that we don’t remove any of the exciting attributes that our apples can present to you. Austin Eastciders is all about authenticity and commitment to quality. These ideals, along with our service to employees and community, set the stage for an environment of enjoying a tasty beverage with the company of good people.

BLACKWATER DRAW BREWING

On account of our fierce beer lovin’ spirit, we hunkered down for a great brewed oddity that would whet our whistles and tickle our tastes. The suds of Blackwater Draw Brewing Co. are akin to their namesake, the beautiful birthplace of the mighty Brazos River: The Blackwater Draw. Now unlike that sludgy, unsanitary, downstream water that courses through the Brazos Valley, the beautiful Blackwater Draw sources unadulterated H-twenty. We follow this simple precept with our brew-making, and we believe it to be true that our time is not ill spent. Our beer is brewed in-house and is as sweet and pure as the water that pours from the Blackwater Draw. The

Blackwater Draw Brewing Co. makes bona fide craft beers that are as cultured as the grain that makes them. Consider us the safehouse for your gang while you hunker down, arouse your appetite, and satiate your thirst.

BRAZOS VALLEY BREWING

Our roots are similiar to most. Homebrewing, maybe a few too many, and a crazy “what if”. As the recipes were being developed, we discovered the old Brenham Brewery located just south of downtown Brenham, Texas. The community welcomed us with open arms and then began the launched December 2013, and since then we’ve been living the dream. We’re not a complicated brewery nor are we a complicated group of people. Our philisophy is a simple one. We brew what we like and we hope you like it, too.

INDEPENDENCE BREWING CO.

Independence Brewing is closing in on its seventh anniversary and is the longest-running Austin brewery that commercially bottles their beers. Currently only available in the Austin/San Antonio areas, Independence generally makes traditional styles of beer that are smooth and easy drinking. Don’t be fooled by the “easy drinking” tag: Their beers don’t lack in flavor. From their lightest offering (Freestyle Wheat) to their darkest (Convict Hill), Independence runs the gamut from crisp and refreshing to hoppy and bright to dark and thick. Founders Rob and Amy Cartwright have made a point of harnessing inspiration from Texas history in their beer naming and labeling, and for that, we

KARBACH BREWERY

We like beer. A lot. Our background is in the beer biz. Everything from distribution and importing to German training and brewery operations. A few years ago we had an opportunity that would allow us to open up our own brewery. We jumped on it. We’re extremely excited about this brewery, and we think it shows in everything we do. This is just plain fun for us. The day it starts to feel like a job is the day when lightning shall strike us dead. Cause, hey, at the end of the day we’re making beer. And beer is fun. One reason we named the brewery Karbach Brewing Co. is because we’re located on Karbach Street. Even more important to us, though, is the fact that the Karbach Street warehouse was the site Ken and Chuck started their beer distribution company decades ago. Lots of great beer has moved through the warehouse over the years, and now it is time to add our own to that list. Karbach is also a village in Bavaria. We hear they drink a lot of great beer there.

LAKEWOOD BREWING

Lakewood Brewing Company was founded in 2011, but the inspiration behind our family-owned craft brewery began long ago. I was born in Belgium and moved to North Texas when I was 7 years old. Growing up, we took regular trips to visit family in Belgium and over the years I developed a great appreciation for the uniqueness of Belgianstyle beer. I graduated from SMU in Dallas when craft beer and European imports were starting to become increasingly popular. My beer journey began with the search for a taste from Belgium here in Texas. That search led me to discover American craft breweries that were making new and exciting beers. During that time I moved to East Dallas and found a part of the city that is full of creative people putting their energy back into the Deco Lakewood Theater, to over the top block parties, I fell in love with this invigorated neighborhood, and the vibe that came with it. It wasn’t long before I, along with some friends, discovered home-brewing and after the first few brews, the train had left the station and there was no turning back. As with most brewers, I fell in love with brewing’s perfect blend of art and science. So I took the leap and applied to the American Brewer’s Guild, where I was accepted and soon graduated. I cut the cord from my old career and started getting everything in place to open a production brewery on the east side of town. After a year and a half of planning, building

and installing, on August 4, 2012, we sold our very first keg of beer and produced 11 different styles of beer our first year. With a quick and strong following of local beer supporters, we grew from just three employees to well over a dozen, expanded our capacity, and introduced our year-round and seasonal lineup in six and four-packs. Here at Lakewood, we strive to create the highest quality beers by developing new and exciting styles while staying true to the art and precision of craft brewing. We handcraft small batch beers that are full of unique, exciting flavors and reflect the timelessness, creativity, and energetic fun that makes Lakewood less of a place and more of a feeling. It’s where we brewed our first beer, where my family lives today, and where Lakewood Brewing Company was born.

love and attention. We like to focus on the relationship between beer and whiskey. As a combined operation, we can do things to highlight this relationship that no one else can, like age our own beer in our own bourbon barrels and distill our beers into whiskeys. We also use much of the same equipment to make both our beer and our whiskey, and we can do this because there are a lot of similarities between the two processes. It’s actually really cool to see, and we invite you to come take a tour and learn about it for yourself. We believe in using local ingredients to make quality products by hand. Sometimes we make them in traditional ways, and sometimes we experiment to create new and interesting things. We think our beer and whiskey are best enjoyed paired with great local food and in good company. Beer and whiskey are fantastic products with fascinating histories that only get more interesting as you learn about them. We love to talk about them, educate people about what we know, and learn from all the great homebrewers, chefs, and industry folks we have the pleasure to talk to.
