Together. We Rise. Health care is this region’s number one industry, and as the leader in that regional industry, Pikeville Medical Center knows that our role comes with great responsibility. We accept that responsibility and have plans in place to carry our vision forward - turning ideas into actions to better meet the needs of those we are privileged to serve. We are a regional healthcare system that transforms lives. We are continually adding technology of the highest level to detect and treat diseases earlier. We are making investments in new communities so

that quality health care is accessible to more people than ever before. We are recruiting physicians who are second to none and who work together to attack and control diseases - all the while delivering care with an emphasis on listening, compassion and faith. We do this because we know that patients come first. While delivering each of them world-class health care is an integral part of who we are and what we do, it’s more than that. We want our patients, their families and visitors to feel welcome here, and we are working toward making Pikeville Medical Center the friendliest hospital in the Commonwealth. As the economic driver of the region, our commitment extends to providing career opportunities and an exceptional working environment for as many as possible. Job creation is an ever-present priority, and we take pride in having been named one of the best places to work in Kentucky for seven straight years. People. Quality. Service. Growth. It’s why we’re here. We are proud to be Pikeville Medical Center, and we are proud to share this report outlining our organization’s direct impact within our community and across the region.

Most sincerely,

Donovan Blackburn Chief Executive Officer and Vice President

Economic Impac t This is an unbelievable investment in health care in Eastern Kentucky. More than sixty million dollar’s worth of investments, hundreds of jobs created, but more critically the ability to reach people right there in the Eastern Kentucky community. There’s so much good news happening. I’m excited to see what impact this will have on our communities in Eastern Kentucky. Honorable Matt Bevin, Governor Commonwealth of Kentucky

The City of Coal Run is blessed to be located in such close proximity to Pikeville Medical Center (PMC). Access to award-winning, high-quality healthcare is imperative for any city to prosper and grow and having PMC in our backyard is certainly an advantage for us when recruiting businesses into our community. Coal Run residents appreciate the ability to seek specialty care normally only found in large cities so close to home. Additionally, in any medical emergency, timing is of the essence, and our emergency services personnel, including our police department, operate with an extra level of security knowing life-saving medical care, second-to-none in our region, is just a few miles away. Andrew H. The addition of the medical services that PMC will be providing is an obvious asset to the community in the way of healthcare. But, the impact of having a facility in that area of town has numerous economic benefits for the City of Prestonsburg as well. The customers that PMC serves are people that might not otherwise be coming to our town. The increase in traffic by their clients will generate opportunities for our city’s established businesses to increase their customer base. The rise in traffic also opens up the immediate area surrounding the facility to be populated with “satellite businesses. Les Stapleton, Mayor City of Prestonsburg

As a business owner in Eastern Kentucky, it has been exciting to watch the phenomenal growth of Pikeville Medical Center during the past couple of decades. Its dedication and investment to “high quality medical care, state-of-the art technologies and equipment, and the recruitment and provision of numerous job opportunities have been a tremendous boost to us here in Eastern Kentucky. And while PMC has been prudent in the management of its capital and operational dollars, the leadership has also been diligent in finding and using quality and competitive local businesses to fill the needs necessary to help grow its mission. Our region is fortunate that the progressive leaders at PMC have been and are committed to making a difference for those of us not only here but throughout our state and region. Our people and businesses are greatly benefiting from PMC’s superior healthcare and services, and its excellent jobs, wages and benefits. Investments & Grow th Health care is the region’s number-one industry. It is up to us to recruit the best physicians, invest in cutting-edge technology and provide advanced specialty care for our community and surrounding areas. Eastern Kentucky has faced many challenges. In the past, people in our community were geographically two hours away from specialty health care. The people in our community were forced to travel to receive the care they needed. PMC has taken the lead to ensure that people no longer have to travel to find exceptional care. We have grown to become a regional medical network offering accessibility to 502 medical providers across 18 | Economic Impact Report 2019

more than 50 areas of medical specialization. In the past three years, PMC has had 16,915 patients present through our transfer center, and we stand as the Commonwealth’s only Level II Trauma Center. There is, however, so much more. Our focus is forward. This section of our Economic Impact Guide will report on growth initiatives and investments that are taking Pikeville Medical Center to an even higher level of care.

Rendering of Heart & Vascular Institute

Investments & Growth Heart & Vascular Institute Pikeville Medical Center is recognized as having one of the top heart programs in Kentucky. Our goal, however, is to become the leading Heart & Vascular Institute in the state within the next two years. PMC’s strategic investment in advancing its heart and vascular program started several years ago. A giant leap was taken in 2018 with the installation of three new state-of-the-art, interventional cardiac catheterization (cath) labs.

Capital renovations are underway within the 26,000-square-foot space in the PMC Miners Building that houses the current Heart & Vascular Institute. When renovations are complete, the Heart & Vascular Institute will also encompass 14,000 square feet on the second floor of the Miner’s Building as well as a two-story addition of space that exceeds 9,000 square feet. To round out this amazing new area will be construction of a canopy

At the heart of the new cath labs is the Philips Azurion imaging system. This advanced technology helps to optimize patient comfort and enables physicians to provide an advanced level of care. The PMC Heart and Vascular Institute recently delivered the region’s first TAVR and Kentucky’s first TatciCath Contact Force Ablation Catheter for atrial fibrillation. PMC is one of the first hospitals in the nation to implant the Micra Leadless Pacemaker and the Watchman Device. PMC is also advancing heart care through its new Valve Clinic. To achieve PMC’s vision of becoming the leading heart program in the state, there is more to come. In November 2018, PMC announced a monumental $35.2 million capital investment to further expand the Heart & Vascular Institute to make it unlike any other in the Commonwealth.

and vestibule at the Heart & Vascular Institute entry and a re-skin of the Miners Building to give the exterior and roof a new modern look. Anticipated completion of the Heart & Vascular Institute project is August 21, 2020.

Investments & Growth Children’s Hospital

In November 2018, Pikeville Medical Center proudly announced plans to invest $6.3 million in the development of a new Children’s Hospital. Today, hundreds of Eastern Kentucky families must travel to Lexington or Cincinnati to receive pediatric inpatient care for their children. With this project, PMC will give those families the ability to stay close to home with their children in the event they need hospitalization. The project will be broken into phases. Phase I will be the relocation and expansion of the PMC Pediatric Clinic. Though PMC currently offers access to a first-class Pediatric Clinic, leadership recognized the great need to separate the clinic from the Obstetrics Unit and expand its size due to the growing demand for pediatric services. Upon completion, the new Pediatric Clinic will have a separate entrance just past Starbucks within the

hospital’s main atrium. The clinic will include 17 new state-of-the-art exam rooms, and parents will be able to park on the second floor in the hospital parking garage and go directly to the Pediatric Clinic without exposing their children to other patients as they travel through the hospital. The environment in the Pediatric Clinic will be kidfriendly and playfully inviting. Plans are in place to utilize vivid colors, and the décor will deliver a look that children will enjoy. The project is currently under design, and construction for this phase is scheduled to launch in December 2019. The remaining phase of the Children’s Hospital project will involve further development of pediatric service lines as well as construction of an inpatient unit. Full completion of this additional phase is estimated to be in 2021.

Investments & Growth Lab Expansion

Pikeville Medical Center recently completed a $6.3 million laboratory renovation and expansion project across multiple phases. The result is quicker and more accurate diagnosis and treatment for patients. The expansion encompassed 10,000 square feet of space. Phase I of the project, represented by the hospital’s core laboratory, was completed in 2018. This phase was highlighted with a brand new, state-ofthe-art laboratory automation line and ten new analyzers. Since becoming operational, PMC has been able to decrease the turnaround time of laboratory results by up to 50 percent. In addition, over 200 tests that were previously sent to a reference laboratory can now be done in-house. This allows PMC to perform approximately 98 percent of needed lab tests directly in the hospital. Hospital laboratories, based on national averages, are only able to perform between 86 – 90 percent of needed tests.

The remaining phases of the laboratory expansion project were completed in January 2019. Phase II provided the Pathology Department the ability to complete testing that is generally only performed at specialty reference labs and research centers by adding new grossing stations, a new special slide stainer and a new immune stainer. These advances have significantly decreased the time patients and physicians wait on pathology reports and have aided our oncology team in quickly diagnosing types of cancer and determining the courses of treatment. Phase III delivered a new laboratory consulting and conference room, along with new state-of-the-art technology for the Microbiology Department through an investment in analyzers that identify bacteria and viruses in a remarkably reduced time frame.

Community Outreach Through New Clinics Pikeville Medical Center understands it can be challenging to go out and find health care. The process of traveling for care means extra time and money, and when patients are sick, the last thing they want to do is travel. As an organization, PMC has addressed this need through the development of a network of medical clinics that are directly accessible in key communities within the hospital’s service area. In 2018, investments toward the development of the following clinics were announced. Many projects have been completed.
