TO OFFICIATE YOUR WEDDING Getting married by a Justice of the Peace (JP) is an excellent alternative to a religious ceremony.

Phillip M. Lynch, JR. J.D. Minister & Counselor

G

etting married by a Justice of the Peace (JP) is an excellent alternative to a religious ceremony. JPs offer civil marriage ceremonies which are ideal for secular, interfaith, and same sex couples. Many JPs officiate outside the courts so whether you are eloping or getting married with all the fanfare, if you are looking for a nonreligious ceremony with all the authority of the law, this may be for you. How to Hire a Justice of the Peace Hiring a Justice of the Peace is a combination between getting a legal document at the Clerk's Office and hiring a wedding vendor of any kind. You will follow steps similar to this if you want to get married by a Justice of Peace: 1. Decide whether you want to get married at the courthouse or if you would like the JP to marry you at the location of your choice.

request information. 4. While obtaining information regarding JPs in your area, consider asking about the cost. Some courthouses will have a set fee for officiating a simple ceremony on the premises. Other's will relay you directly to the JPs. 5. Contact, or make an appointment at the courthouse, to interview the Justices of Peace you are interested in.

-

6. Interview the Justices of the Peace. Make sure to ask about costs of officiating within the courthouse and at a venue, and also if he or she is willing to personalize the ceremony to your taste, and the cost for that as well. 7. Choose a JP that suits your preferences and needs and make sure to inform the other interviewees you have chosen another person. 8. Get the marriage license and pay the JP's fee.

2. Decide how much personalization you want for the ceremony and if you have special requests.

9. Personalize the ceremony with the JP and confirm additional services, or alternatively, confirm appointment at the courthouse.

3. Contact the corresponding office (as per your state's regulations) and request information or a list of available Justices of the Peace that officiate marriage ceremonies. Note that some offices may ask you to visit in person to

10. Get married!

MAID OF HONOR 101 A COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE TO THE MAID OF HONOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Before the Big Day

Give your help and advice when it’s requested. Yes, only when it’s requested. Sure, you can feel free to offer it at any time, but unless the bride-to-be takes you up on it, don’t try to force your way into helping out or offering unwanted opinions. If the bride does ask for your help or advice, go ahead and give it your all! Be an emotional confidant. Wedding planning is stressful, so act as a person she can go to when she needs to vent, cry, and let it all out. Keep the bride laughing and smiling. See above! Like we said, this is an often stressful time for the bride, so do your darndest to keep her in good spirits from “yes” to “I do.” Organize and lead the bridesmaids. In many ways, the maid of honor is the leader of the bridesmaids, so don’t be shy about taking the reins when it comes to importation tasks like buying and altering dresses, planning the bachelorette party, etc. Plan the pre-wedding activities. By “pre-wedding,” we mean the bridal shower (or couples shower) and the bachelorette party, if she wants these events (and not every bride does!). Spread the word about the registry. When planning said events, don’t be afraid to spread the word among guests where the bride and groom are registered. Keep record of the gifts at all events. As the bride and/or couple open gifts, jot down who gave what gift and what exactly it was. This will help the bride tremendously when she sits down to write thank-you notes. Attend all pre-wedding parties. Your presence will definitely help the bride feel more relaxed. After all, you are her right-hand gal. Write your wedding day toast. If the bride has requested speeches at the reception, don’t wait until the day before or day of the wedding to prep for yours. Unless you’re a seasoned speaker, the bride and everyone else will be able

to tell that you didn’t take this responsibility very seriously. (Talk about a surefire way to hurt feelings!).

On the Big Day

You’ll have plenty of tasks to keep you busy on the day of, especially if your bride-to-be didn’t hire a wedding planner. Here’s everything a maid of honor is typically responsible for on the day of the wedding: Know the wedding day timeline like the back of your hand so you can make sure everything stay on schedule and that you and the ‘maids are where you need to be at all times. Keep a list of vendor and family numbers on you. This way you won’t have to go scrambling for numbers or bother the bride when something goes awry. Be the “go-to” - person should any problems arise. -

LOVE COMES WHEN YOU LEAST EXPECT IT...

Melissa & Ricky

Melissa pulled into a tire shop in Mandeville with 2 low tires.

The tire tech listened and helped her out. Ricky was the manager, and at the time had a 17+ year background in the automotive sales industry. He poked his head out to see what was going on. Melissa caught his eye and before she left he walked to her truck and explained how he never did this but would love her phone number. She was hesitant since she was newly divorced and was focused on growing her small business which included cabinet and furniture refinishing. She paused and said, “If you can find me on Facebook, I’ll give it to you then. I’m Melissa.” A few days went by and she received a message from a very handsome Ricky that said, “Found you!” They exchanged numbers and texted for a few days before he asked her to meet for day drinks at Bistro Byronz in Mandeville. He had been single for 11 years so he was extremely nervous. He even asked his roommate to chaperon When Melissa arrived she saw Ricky sitting at the bar and they locked eyes. She knew then something was happening. They drank, and laughed, and talked until the restaurant closed. Then Melissa asked, “Did you notice the weirdo sitting next to you the whole time?” Ricky busted out in laughter! He had forgotten he was being chaperoned!

During their first few months of dating, Ricky would go to Melissa’s shop when he would get off of work to tinker around with some little projects or just help her out. She quickly realized he was way more talented than he ever let on. One night when she knew she loved him and knew they were building a life together she asked him, “Why don’t you quit your job and come work with me?” He hesitated, but he always wanted an opportunity like that. They both made the leap of faith and now both of their businesses are booming! Pretty in Paint by Melissa and Buildin’ on da Bayou. They will be getting married on November 13, 2021 at the beautiful Barn of Pearl River. Love comes along when you least expect it and definitely comes to those who wait!
